Plain weave:
• The plain weave is variously
known as “calico” or “tabby”
weave. It is the simplest of all
weaves having a repeat size of 2.
It consists of interlacing warp and
weft yarns in a pattern of over
one and under one.
• Plain weave is obtained by raising all
even-numbered warp ends at one pick
and raising all the odd numbered ones at
the other pick. It means threads
interlacing in alternate order. The range of
application of this weave is wide.
Plain weave is used for structures, which
range from very heavy and coarse canvas
and blankets made of thick yarns to the
lightest and finest cambries and muslins
made in extremely fine yarns.
Characteristics of plain
weave:
The plain weave has the following characteristics
:
It has the maximum number of binding points
• The threads interlace on alternate order of 1
up and 1 down.
• The thread density is limited
• Cloth thickness and mass per unit area are
limited.
• It produces a relatively stronger fabric that is
obtained by any other simple combination of
threads, excepting that of “gauze”or “cross
weaving”
Derivatives
of plain
weave:
Warp rib:
• A warp rib results from extending the plain
weave in the warp direction.
Characteristics:
• It produces a rib or cords effect in the weft
direction
• Generally warp yarn is finer than weft
• Two or more weft yarns are passé over or
under a warp
• Weft yarn are low twisted yarn
• Two heald shaft are used for producing
design
• It is mostly used for warp faced construction,
such as poplin fabric.
TYPES OF WARP RIB WEAVE :
• REGULAR WARP RIB WEAVE:
• if number of ends are equal like numbers of picks than
the weavve is termed as regular warp rib weave.
• IRREGULAR WARP RIB WEAVE:
• if number of ends are un equal like numbers of picks
than the weavve is termed as regular warp rib weave.
Weft rib:
• a weft rib structure results from ex
tending the plain weave in the weft
direction
Characteristics of warp rib weave:
• It produces a rib or cords effect in
the warp direction
• Generally weft yarn is finer than
warp
• Two or more warp yarns are pass
over or under a weft
• Two heald shaft are used for
producing design
• It is mostly used for producing
blankets, hair cords etc.
TYPES OF WARP RIB WEAVE :
• REGULAR WEFT RIB WEAVE:
• if number of ends are equal like numbers of picks than
the weavve is termed as regularwarp rib weave
regular weft rib weave:
• IRREGULAR WEFT RIB WEAVE:
• if number of ends are un equal like numbers of picks
than the weavve is termed as regularweft rib weave
Matt or Basket
weave:
• Basket weave is a variation of the basic Plain
Weave construction. It used a Warp and a
Weft yarn like in all types of weaving.
• Like plain weave, Basket weave follows the
same pattern of the Weft yarn going under
one warp yarn and over the next, creating a
checkerboard effect.
• The difference between basket weave and plain weave is that
adjacent yarns are grouped together. They are usually grouped in
pairs, but sometimes more yarns can be grouped together. These
are woven as if they are one yarn.
Properties of Basket Woven
Fabrics:
• Interesting pattern created
• Different coloured yarns can be
used to create a contrast
• More pliable and stronger than
plain weave
• Loose
• Not as stable as plain weave
• Frays easily
• No Crosswise of lengthwise stretch
• Flatter than plain weave
• Less of a crimp
• Drapes Well
• Fibres and yarns used dictate the
properties of the finished fabric
• End Uses of Basket Woven Fabrics
• Outerwear
• Monks Clothing
• Draperies
• Garments
