Phonology - LESSON PLAN
I) Content
Intonation in English cartoons : Observe the intonations of the sentences and understand the
possible misunderstanding that occurs during the conversational turns.
II) Aims
Make students identify and understand the importance of correct intonation in sentences for clear
and effective communication.
III) Rationale
Phonology refers to the way the sounds are organized into the individual language, in a specific
language. Therefore, it is necessary to observe the practice of these individual events that make it
accessible to all. (Individual – Collective)
IV) Methodology
First moment: writing on the blackboard examples of breaking news and the possible intonations
that can be made to read them, other than to say that this may be an unintended effect according
to the context and conversation.
Second Moment: Offer a repertoire cartoons in English that works intonation, breaking news, irony
etc., so that students understand the mood through the imposition of sentences.
Third time / activity: to provide students cartoons in white so they can create their own
conversational acts, your turns, exploring the idea of breaking news and applying the intonation in
their different perspectives.

3. V) Evaluation
Evaluation will be done through performance observations on the decision to use the breaking
news according to the effect sought by the speaker / writer of the cartoons, as well as the use of
intonations of these sentences.
Resources used: Board, hand outs, television connected to the Internet (examples show
the cartoons)
Duration: two lessons (about 90'min).
