I nominated the Reeve s Tale fifth as it is a great example of a fabliau. It remains
humorous, even to a modern audience. It also has instructional value, to an extent,
as it features the cheating Miller getting his comeuppance. I nominated the Friar s
Tale fourth due to it s more dramatic nature. Many of the tales focus on mortals,
while the Friar s tale features a demon as a main character. Similar to the Reeve s
tale as well, the story features a villain, the summoner, being punished for his

The Question of Origin The beginnings of Hinduism is hard to factor out, because
they have changed with the religious ideas of India. Many believed that it all started

53. Literary Devices In Young Goodman Brown
Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a complex tale with many
hidden meanings and themes. Hawthorne uses literary devices to propel his story
further into speculation of the unknown world. In his essay, Fogle uses examples of
irony and symbols of opposites to convey the mystery behind Hawthorne s Young
Goodman Brown. Without both ambiguity and clarity, the story would not portray an
atmosphere of doubt which is at the core of Hawthorne s tale.
Fogle claims that Hawthorne uses the image of Faith s ribbon to propel Goodman
into fully accepting sin. Fogle claims that casting aside all further scruples, he
rages through the wild forest to the meeting of witches, for the time at least fully
accepting the domination of Evil (451). After seeing his wife s ribbon Goodman is
distraught, thus pushing him to chase after the ribbon in hopes of finding Faith.
The ribbon is a symbol of ambiguity because it is a real object that after propelling
Goodman to accept a life of sin vanishes, further questioning the reality of the
situation. Fogle further argues that ribbons portray a heavenly aspect and put an
emphasis on Faith s pureness, these ribbons, as we have seen, are an important
factor in the plot; and as an emblem of heavenly Faith their color gradually deepens
into the liquid flame or blood of the baptism in to sin (456). The ribbons represent
Goodman s fall into evil that eventually causes his family to live a life of misery.

The objective of experiment H was to identify an unknown compound using only
infrared resonance (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. IR
helped determine the functional groups present in the molecule. NMR helped
solve the structure of the molecule. The first step to solving my molecule was
analyzing my IR spectra. The broad bands at 2958cm 1 indicated C H alkane
stretches. These stretches were sp3 hybridized bonds since they did not go past
3000cm 1. I found a strong carbonyl (C=O) stretch at 1736cm 1, an ester. In the
fingerprint region, there was a C O stretch at approximately 1182cm 1, consistent

The absorptions in NMR were calculated from left to right. The reasoning behind this
is because of protons that shield (up field) or de shield (downfield). Factors that
influence shielding/de shielding depend upon electron withdrawing/electron donating
protons. If the protons on a molecule were more electron withdrawing, the molecule
will be more deshielded. If the protons on a molecule were more electron donating,
the molecule will be more shielded. Looking downfield, Ha showed absorptions at
approximately 4.1ppm. The range for hydrogen s attached to a single bonded oxygen
is at approximately 3.5 4.8 ppm. Hydrogen s attached to carbon in this region were
deshielded because of the electronegativity of the oxygen (electron withdrawing).
Looking up field, Hb was at approximately 2.3ppm, which is the chemical shift
range for alpha hydrogen s (2.1 2.5ppm). Alpha carbons were carbons that were
directly attached to a carbonyl. Because the carbon in this region is an alpha
carbon, its attached hydrogen s were alpha hydrogen s. The absorptions for Hc
were at approximately 1.6ppm. Hd s absorptions were at approximately 1.4 ppm.
Both Hc and Hd were in the chemical shift range for CH2 bonds. He and Hf were
the most shielded of the peaks. The chemical shift range for CH3 groups is at 0.7
1.3ppm. Both He and Hf were at the ends of the molecular structure since they were
most shielded and had two neighboring
