Organ Systems And The Nervous System Essay
The six main organ systems in the human body are the nervous system, cardiovascular system,
endocrine system, digestive system, skeletal system and the reproductive system.
Nervous System
There are two parts to the nervous system which are: the central nervous system and the peripheral
nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and some nerves,
whereas the peripheral nervous system includes all the other nerves and it carries information to the
central nervous system and also from it. The central nervous acts as the central control region of the
human nervous system. The CNS processes information and issues commands around the body.
The autonomic nervous system is the command network the CNS uses to maintain the body s
homeostasis. It regulates heartbeat and controls muscle contractions in the walls of blood vessels,
digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It also carries messages that help stimulate glands to
secrete tears, mucus, and digestive enzymes.
Central nervous system
A response to a stimulus is coordinated by its central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of
the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the
environment. Receptors detect a stimulus and send impulses along sensory neurons to the CNS.
The CNS coordinates the information and sends impulses along motor neurons to the effectors,
which bring about a response.
The sequence of a response is:

UFOs Essay
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Unidentified Flying Objects have dazzled us for many years. The
controversy over the existence of alien life forms began March 23, 1909, in Peterborough, UK.
This was unusual because neither nor New Zealand had any aircraft at the time (Wilson 14). This
left no explanation for the strange sighting. The debate continues in present day because there are
still no answers to the many sightings that have occurred since. UFO s are real because the
government is hiding their existence, the USA and Europe is a major sight for UFO sightings,
wreckage, and also abductions, many movies, books, and radio hearings have been seen and heard
world wide. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; Many UFO s have been seen through the... Show more

A farmer by the name of Mack Brazel was walking in a field near the town of Roswell, New
Mexico in July of 1947 there he came across some strange silvery wreckage that was unlike
anything he had ever seen. The material was very strong, but, oddly it was also very pliable.
Other object were found near this same field by Grady Barnett. He discovered a large disc
shaped object that was very similar to the saucer shape of a UFO. All around this saucer, both
inside and out, were lifeless, hairless creatures with large heads. Grady Barnett said They were
like humans but they were not humans (Wilson 29). The entire area was soon taken over by
government officials who investigated the object that were found by the two men. After a few
weeks of investigation and the after the object were cleared the are was once again opened up to
the public. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The government has been known to withhold objects that

government released a statement that explained the crash as a fallen weather balloon. Despite the
fact that the alien bodies were seen by local citizen Grady Barnett. Also, when Neil Armstrong and
Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon for the first time they thought they may have seen a foreign space
ship on the surface of the moon, according to radio operators. This was all denied by NASA and

Embryonic Stem Cells Essay
Stem cells
Stem cells are a type of cells that are responsible for the renewal and the regeneration of damaged
and ageing tissues. Stem cells can be divided into two categories: Embryonic Stem cells and
Adult stem cells also known as Somatic stem cells. Embryonic stem cells can be retrieve from
the foetus, amniotic fluid, the placenta, and the umbilical cord blood and in the early embryo.
Adult stem cells can be retrieved from many other parts of the body once a child has been born
and through to adulthood. Those parts of the body are skin, hair follicles, bone marrow and blood,
brain and spinal cord, the lining of the nose, gut, lung, joint fluid, muscle, fat, menstrual blood and
etc. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, which mean they can develop into any of the 220
different body cells while adult stem cells only be able to develop into muscle, bone marrow and
brain cells.

Prufrock Paralysis
Explore the theme of paralysis in Prufrock. What are Prufrock s goals and dreams in the poem
and why is he unable to achieve them? I spent my entire life trying to capture the decisive
moment, but every moment in life was a decisive moment, says Henry Cartier Bresson (1).
Prufrock is a man with great inhibitions who only dares to dream of professing his affection to a
woman. Throughout the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrockby Thomas Elliot, the narrator
has expressed certainty about his beloved s interest in him, and he is more than inclined on
accepting it. However, due to Prufrock s low self esteem and apathy, he regretfully allows the
opportunity to pass him by. Prufrock ponders about what could have been: Would it have... Show

He is the type of person who appears nonchalant to others, but he is in fact too frightened to make
any radical decisions. Profrock s inferiority complex is apparently shown throughout the narration
of the poem, as he repeatedly addressing his frail arms and legs and balding hair. As a matter of
fact, he contemplates on following through the most trivial things such as parting his hair back or
eating a peach in front of people. Winston Churchill once says: To improve is to change; to perfect
is to change often (1). Perfection is a dynamic concept that demands its beholder to change
accordingly. On the contrary, Prufrock makes no attempt to overcome his insecurities, while he,
instead, blames himself for his cowardice. Furthermore, he finds consolation in women s ridicules
and hostility due to the fact that they pay him some degree of attention. At this point, the narrator s
social anxiety and sexual frustration is readily apparent to everyone. Therefore, it is completely
reasonable how he cannot summon the proper ambition to ask his overwhelming question. Adding
insult to injuries, he further deludes himself into thinking that he should carry on with his life
leisurely, while his thinning hair suggests that he

Art And Its Impact On Arts
Art Enriches Art does not solve problems, but makes us aware of their existence, sculptor
Magdalena Abakanowicz has said. The ability to express oneself with arts has been not only
therapeutic but educational. Arts learning can improve motivation, confidence, and teamwork.
Art can encompass many different activities .Being a New Orleanian we are surrounded by all
types of art. We don t always take advantage of this rich cultural and sightsee all the city has to
offer. That is why after years of living here I have decided to explore. I stop by the Saenger
Theatre located on Canal Street. According to the Saenger official website, the Saenger Theatre
opened on February 4, 1927. This source claims the theatre took three years to build and cost
$2.5 million. The building is such a staple on Canal. Before its renovation in 2013, the outside of
it looked like something I could pass up easily especially during the daytime. Now as I walked
on the sidewalk. I see on the outside of the building a timeline of historical events. I could not
help admiring the facts posted around the building. They were vibrant colored pictures detailing
some facts about the Saenger and some fascinating historical events. A notable picture talks about
the first talkie to debut at the Saenger which was Lights of New York. Walking inside I feel a high
class aura that also feels welcoming. High extravagant ceilings was one of things I noticed in the
lobby.

The Implementation Of Salad Bars
The Implementation of Salad Bars in Schools In recent years, the issue of childhood obesity has
gained major attention in the United States. The percentage of obesity has risen tremendously
within the last decade. In a recent news article, American Obesity Rates Are on the Rise, Maggie
Fox states about 28 percent of the people in America admits that they are obese (Fox). The
United States has become the country with the highest rate of obesity in the world. Besides
adults who are obese, obesity is also a common issue to children and teenagers. Childhood is an
important period when parents help their child avoid being obese. Eating habits during
childhood can have an impact on a person as they age. Children in the U.S who are obese will
most likely develop a higher risk of having medical issues. According to the website,
letsmove.gov, obesity in children could cause a wide range of health issues such as
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, high glucose levels, and more
( Health Problems and Childhood Obesity ). Also, children who are obese at a young age, are
likely to remain obese in adulthood. The establishment of the bill, H.R. 2627 Salad Bars in
Schools Expansion Act could reduce the percentage of obese children by providing salad bars
during lunch times. This exposure to healthy eating habits can help children to maintain a healthy
lifestyle and to avoid future health issues. In the bill H.R. 2627 Salad Bars in Schools Expansion

Kaze No Denwa Short Story
Kaze No Denwa
It is April 11, 2011, and one month has passed since the great Japanese tsunami splintered the
island. In a small coastal village, a man parks his car at a distance and walks towards the only
object in a large field: Kaze No Denwa, the Phone of the Wind. Tears begin to well in his eyes as
he feels the gentle breeze wash over him. His shoes crunch the loose gravel underfoot. On this day,
there is no one else around.
In the middle of the field stands a white phone booth. It glows boldly in the bright afternoon
sunlight. The man walks along a winding path through low cut, manicured underbrush. He
reaches the phone booth, slides open the door, and enters. He takes his time, looks around, and
finally picks up the receiver from atop an old fashioned black rotary phone. He places a finger
into a small circle at his desired number, gently spins clockwise, releases, and repeats nine times.
The phone in Kaze No Denwa is connected to nothing; there is no electricity here, no dial tone
even, but the man is not surprised.
If you can hear me, he says, please listen carefully.
He stops, looks around the tiny phone box, and sobs, wiping the tears from his eyes with a sleeve.
Please, let me hear your voice say Daddy again. He covers his eyes with the sleeve and gently
whispers, I m so sorry I couldn t save you. I will forever be sorry and shamed. His head falls, his
eyes close.
His name is Satsuko. He has travelled far to visit Kaze No Denwa. The great tsunami has brought
havoc and, with it, many lives have gone to that place where spirits reside. Sadness has punctuated
the land, and Satsuko is in its midst. His face and demeanour are altered. Kaze No Denwa, the
Phone of the Wind is becoming well known. Its back story and sentiment have resonated with the
people.
He read about it in a magazine published the year prior; the story of an old man s burning wish,
long before the tsunami, to communicate with his deceased relative. A phone booth was set in
the middle of a field tilled by hand and hoe for generations, a place for the old man to air his
grief, where his breath could catch the wind and set out across the field, down the cliff face, and
across the vast blue Pacific.
Satsuko moves slowly.

Longfellow Psalm Of Life
Life Advice from Longfellow (An Analysis of Longfellow s Psalm of Life) Buddha once said,
Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.
People sometimes look back on their lives and aren t always satisfied by what they see there.
There are many factors that must be taken into consideration to lead a happy, healthy life such as
taking chances and living for the moment. In Longfellow s Psalm of Life, he explains these
factors. There are three important messages in Longfellow s Psalm of Life. The first theme in
Psalm of Life is to continuously learn and try new things everyday. People complain that they are
tired of doing the same thing everyday, when it is their own fault. In lines 11and

Response On The Sisters Brothers
The Sisters Brothers Novel Response
Throughout the novel, The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt, the two brothers, Eli and Charlie, are
shown as complete opposites in their personalities. This results in one being likable and the other
detestable.
Eli is a more likable character than Charlie since the reader has more access to Eli s emotions as
the story is written through Eli s eyes. The writer uses the first person point of view writing style
to allow the reader to gain an insight into Eli s thoughts. It also allows the reader to follow him
through other experiences he goes on without his brother. This writing style allows you to feel as
if you are in Eli s head. During their journey to California, Eli meets a woman who he fancies.
They enter her room and she beg[ins] looking at the door as if wishing to leave.
Come sit beside me, I said. I would like to talk to you.
I should be getting back to my work.

These traits would not have been found if the book were to have been written in Charlie s point of
view since Charlie was not present. Throughout the novel, Eli has to put up with his brother s
selfishness and impoliteness several times. Charlie s treatment results in the reader being
sympathetic towards Eli. Charlie speaks of his brother as if he is childish and weak, however, this
is not true, as there have been many instances where Eli has taken care of Charlie when he has

Owen, S Poetry In Wilfred Owen s Anti-Vietnam War Poetry
World War One (1914 1918) was a war involving many countries, Wilfred Owen was one of the
soldiers fighting for the UK however he was completely unaware of the outcome the war would
lead too. Owen strongly disagreed with the harsh reality of the war leading to him writing anti war
poetry. Likewise the anti Vietnamwar poetrywas strongly anti war, resulting in the poetry being
highly critical of the war. Both wars were extremely criticized and lead to outrage by many as
the majority saw little to no point of either wars. From this poetry it has allowed the public to see
the real harshness behind the glamourized version advertised by the government. The poetry not
only acts as a clear insight into the war but it also gave the public something to really agree with
causing them to be read or listened to again and again. It is due to the great writing style of
Wilfred Owen and his use of poetic devices such as metaphors and personification that gives it an
even deeper meaning.
Owens main concern behind his poetry was to reveal the horrors of war and reveal the harsh
reality that is always covered up by the Government. He successfully did this through every piece
of poetry he wrote revealing yet another piece of the hidden truth. Once things like Owens poetry
arose gradually more people thought the war was futile which is exactly what he expressed in his
poem futility. The poem begins in panic with the soldiers quickly trying to save a soldiers live, if
anything might rouse him

The Emergence Of Nationalism In The Nineteenth Century

George Washington Carver Essay
George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver was born in Diamond Grove, Missouri during the spring of 1864 or
1865. Like many slaves, he was uncertain of his birth date. His mother, Mary, was a slave who
belonged to Moses and Susan Carver. As an infant, slave raiders kidnapped his mother. The
childless carvers reared George and his older brother, James.
Growing up, George was captivated by plants. Many neighbors referred to him as the Plant Doctor
. Since Carver was an African American, he was not accepted at any local schools, therefore he
had to attend school eight miles away from home. He did very well in school. In 1885 he was

As well as creating the Farmers Institute, Carver also helped the farmers of Alabama and the
southern states a great deal. An insect called the boll weevil became an enormous threat to the
cotton fields of southern United States. Carver recommended to these farmers that they should
substitute their cotton crops with sweet potatoes and, the more successful recommendation,
peanuts. This switch would provide farmers another source of income and would also help to
prevent the spread of the insect. The one problem with this solution was that no one knew what to
do with all the peanut crops. Carver was quoted as saying: we can learn to synthesize materials for
every human need from the things that grow. So that is what he did. In total, Carver was able to
create close to three hundred different products from the peanut plant. These wide variety of
products include dyes, ink, insulation, cosmetics, stock feed, medicines, glue, soap, and peanut
milk. Although most of his products never became commercially sold, Carver became widely
known as the Peanut Man . He also created nearly one hundred uses for the sweet potato crops.
Even though George WashingtonCarver was well known throughout parts of the south, his real
rise to fame started in 1916. Carver was invited to join the Royal Society for the Arts. Shortly
afterward, the Carver Products Company was founded to market his many products. Carver was
also honored with the medal of the National

Mexican American Relations Of The Past And The Present Essay
After thinking well about our class and the sociological symbols of power what first comes to
my mind is the border. Seemingly enough I first had an idea to do my paper on the narcotics
trafficking but I stumbled across a few good articles that support my thesis to my paper. In my
paper my goal of is to address Mexican American relations of the past and the present, and to
project what type of relations must exist between these two countries in order to address key
issues that are symbolic power indicators such as racism and poverty, who benefits, who wins, who
rules when dealing with a major local sociological issue of treating illegal immigrants.
A little background on the history, in the early 1990 s immigrants suffered poor economic situations
in the United States. The blame had to be put somewhere so Governor Pete Wilson of California
decided to vocally address this issue with his proposed Proposition 187 in 1994. At this time
California was facing economic recession and felt that the massive immigration of illegal
immigrants from Mexico was the primary reason for residents economic struggles. Furthermore
Proposition 187, promoted as the Save Our State initiative, called for a dismissal of the
availability of public service such as education and health care to illegal immigrants. It also aided
in their deportation, as people such as nurses and teachers would be required to report suspected
illegal immigrants to authorities. This initiative was able to pass even

Evaluate My Reading Process
It never occurred to me before to take some time and evaluate my reading process and my reading
habits. I ve done tons of readings throughout my whole life, including articles and abstracts for
school and just some novels and fiction books for entertainment. However, I barely paid attention at
any of my readingroutine. All I was concentrated on were either getting the information I need
from the text or, in case of a novel, enjoying the plot. Up until recently I had no idea if the way I
was readingis productive or not, but after accomplishing my assignment for English class to read
the texts from On Creative Reading , I tried to look at my reading process from a different angle.
I noticed that some writing styles make it harder for me to read, concentrate and follow the idea
of the text, if the writing consists of very long phrases and is overloaded with some difficult
expressions and lots of unknown terms. On the other hand, if the author tries to keep the
phrases more or less simple and clear, tries to hold my interests and makes the whole thing easy
to follow, all those things make my reading process more pleasurable. Surely, the topic I m
researching plays a prominent role in the level of pleasure I m receiving during the reading. I m
more interested in reading some articles on photography or psychology rather than finance or
physics. I would enjoy more reading some fiction than some assignments for school. Richard E.
Miller and Ann Jurecic, the authors of Habits of the Creative Mind, point out that reading
process is not the same for everyone. They ask questions like Once the process of reading has
been routinized and internalized, why is that different people reading different material reach
different conclusions? Or to put this another way, why is there ambiguity? (Miller and Jurecic
80). Indeed, after reading the same text, each of us will make different conclusions and have
different feelings about what we ve read. A lot depends on our previous knowledge and beliefs,
ability to analyze information and many other factors. I often catch myself reading about online TV
shows if they have really interesting theories and plot lines that derive from myths or other similar
sources. On

Comparing The Odyssey And Prince Of Wales
On the 11th of July, 1799, crowds assembled to watch the launching of the new ship. Final
preparations were made, and the Prince of Wales climbed aboard, bearing a silver standing cup
filled with wine. Two workers climbed onto the slipway carrying hammers, and split asunder the
blocks preventing the shipfrom sliding prematurely. They then jumped into safety ditches as the
ship went stern first down the slipway. As the ship settled into the water, the prince of wales
poured the wine across the decks, and then tossed the cup into the crowds. He exclaimed I name
this ship Foudroyant, to a fanfare of music from the shore. The ship was then towed to a dock near
the yard, and the masts were brought over on another ship. For the next week work

One of the goals is to increase the prevention behaviors in persons at high risk for diabetes with
pre diabetes. Three of the goals the healthy people initiative will be measuring are: increasing the
patient s physical activity levels, decreasing the fat and calories in the patient s diet, and trying to
increase the proportion of patient s trying to lose weight. ( Healthy people 2020, n.d. , Diabetes D
16) As the nurse considers interventions and goals, there are many factors to consider. The patient
s education level, access to care, family support, spiritual support, and willingness to accept the
diagnosis will greatly affect the outcome. Increasing the prevention behaviors for those at risk for
diabetes affects society as a whole and individually when looking at the client system. Nurses can
help the patient to identify stressors that may impact their ability to meet the goals. The primary
prevention as intervention increases the highest point of health for the patient at this time. The
patient can collaborate with nursing and dieticians to help reduce the fat and calories in their diet.
This diet plan would also allow the patient to lose weight. The patient would also need to have a
list of physical activities that they are willing to participate in. At first the patient may need to be
monitored more frequently to monitor adherence to the plan and measure the plan s effectiveness.

Delirium Theme
In the beginning of the story Delirium by Lauren Oliver the main Character Lena is portrayed as
a regular person in her city, Portland. She follows the rules and obeys all laws, becoming
anxious about pretty much everything during the process. These regulations are set for the
citizens safety, particularly so they don t fall in love. In this dystopian like future, love is a
disease that is easy to catch, hard to get rid of, but simple to cure. Lena, an uptight teenager,
could be seen as a bit of a coward compared to her best friend Hana and her eventual love interest
Alex. Hana gets into the world of illegal websites and hidden parties, trying to get Lena to join in
with her. Alex, on the other hand, is the most stereotypical love interest... Show more content on

Most people probably think the overused theme love conquers all is the focus of the story, or
even quite possibly the common theme everything has a consequence, but that s not the case.
The theme is stated in the story word for word Love: It will kill you and save you, both. In the
story, the whole country believes that love will kill you, using common day mental illnesses
such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder as side effects to the euphoria. However,
love being a sickness may not be true, it can become a complication many face today. People rip
each other apart over the feeling; cheating, lying, and betrayal being major issues. However, love
also makes people happy, complete, and full at the same time. It s no different in the novel; people
ran in fear of the feeling of heartbreak and sadness from love, not realizing how good it makes
people feel. The author used the theme as a bit of a warning; to always be careful, but to never
be scared. Love comes with many ups and downs, but the way you feel is timeless and
unmistakable, and just like it happened to Lena, it can change your world for better or for

The George Hotel s Prospects for the future
The George Hotel is a controversial project that will bring much needed rejuvenation to a lacking
lower Gibsons. The George though being battled by many will bring much needed employment
opportunities to the sunshine coast. This expansion to our waterfront will also bring with it a
boost in tourism and keep the bustling culture of lower Gibsons alive. With this project comes
heavy opposition from people all over the Sunshine Coast. Many people feel that the design of
this project is not aesthetically pleasing and will not fit in with the quaint style of our town. I
would like to pose the question what is the style of this town? Is there a style of architecture that
is recognizable feature of Gibsons or does the the differentiation of all buildings make Gibsons
unique. One other problem that has been posed is the breaking of the OCP height restrictions.
The proposed height for The George is 25 metres which is approximately 8 stories, double the
current OCP restrictions. People worry that if we were to change the rules for one building would
other developers run in and try slip under the rules too. For this town to further flourish we need to
think about changing some of the rules of the OCP to allow projects that will help further our
community culturally, and economically. Economically speaking The George will provide many
full and part time jobs for residents of the Sunshine Coast. A proposed 130 full time and part time in

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Shingles
When I was 11 years old I was brought to the United States leaving family and who I loved
behind, this change in my life triggered my body to go under high levels of stress and getting
what is now called shingles. I did not know what it was at first, it all started with a small red dot
which I thought was just a mosquito bite, however, little did I know this mosquito bite was going
to turn into something very painful. I felt awful and my back, in particular ached and felt very
sore. I felt a burning sensation and penetrating pain like piercing needles in my skin, blisters also
appeared and the rash lasted for about three weeks. It wasn t until years later when I started taking

This virus has a double stranded DNA genome and is also enclosed within an icosahedral capsid,
surrounded by a phospholipid envelope . They are typical symptoms to Chickenpox before the rash
starts to appear, these include; fever, loss of appetite, headache and tiredness, but once the
disease actually appears, it turns into very itchy fluid filled blisters that ultimately turn into dry
scabs. The first spots that the rash may appear is the face and the back, then it quickly spreads to
the rest of the body affecting even genital areas, and inside of the mouth. They are key
symptoms that doctors look for to diagnose chickenpox, many professionals perform a blood test
that checks if a person is producing antibodies to the virus, this to determine whether or not an
individual is already immune to it (chickenpox). Usually, there is no medical test needed, but
instead doctor look for common symptoms to make a clear diagnosis (fever followed by an itchy
rash). Still, Chickenpox can be confused with conditions that affect the skin like scabies or even
insect bites, this is why it is crucial to seek professional help when a person suspects he or she has
contracted the varicella zoster virus.
Treatment for chickenpox varies, there are several things a person can do at home to help relieve
the symptoms, for example, colloidal oatmeal baths help with the itching and keeping nails in good

Judge Posner s Challenge to the Philosophy of Law Essay
Judge Posner s Challenge to the Philosophy of Law
ABSTRACT: This paper presents a conceptual analysis of Richard Posner s empirical theory of
judicial behavior. His theory opposes the conventional view which holds that judges are insulated
from external pressures so their judicial decisions will be based upon a disinterested understanding
of the law. Since economics holds that all people including judges attempt to maximize their
utilities, Posner thinks that the conventional view is an embarrassment which presumes judges are
not rational. His theory holds that the judicial insulation has actually left judges maximizing their
utilities by trading judicial utility against leisure utility. Posner s theory presents a challenge to the

Economics holds that people make decisions based on efforts to maximize their utilities. That is
sometimes expressed as an attempt to maximize happiness or self interest. Two of Adam Smith s
insights are especially relevant here. A micro thesis holds that in the commercial world people
attempt to maximize their own utility while a macro thesis holds that in a competitive economy, the
pursuit of utilities on the part of producers and consumers automatically leads to maximum welfare.
Economists refer to utility maximization as rational, and say any exceptions are so rare that they do
not pose significant exception to the general economic assumption.
Posner is concerned because the conventional view of judicial behavior presumes that judges and
justices are, on these terms, irrational. For the purposes of his analysis, Posner concentrates on
judges and justices referenced in Article III of the US Constitution. I will follow his lead here,
though both of us recognize extrapolation to other judicial settings would be reasonably simple.
From an international perspective, Article III judges have been more exempted from the
temptations and constraints of employment than other judges. Posner points out that Article III
judicial tenure is even more secure than academic tenure:
A federal judge can be lazy, lack judicial temperament, mistreat his staff, berate without reason the
lawyers who appear

Achilles The Real Hero In The Iliad
The Iliad, a series of epic poems originated from Homer and rewritten by Robert Lattimore,
chronicles three main characters: Achilles, Hector, and Agamemnon. All three of these courageous
men share common traits which variate with their roles in the war effort. Of the three, two are
clearly heroes whilst one can almost be considered a villain. Therefore, as seen through quotes from
the Iliadthe real hero becomes quickly identified. Achilleshas been considered the greatest hero of
the Greeks in the Iliad for numerous valid reasons. Similarly, Achilles not only stays humble, but
extremely courageous. Waiting patiently for Hector, Achilles says, No man so long as I am alive
above Earth... and see daylight shall lay the weight even if you mean Agamemnon. (1.88 90) In
this statement, Achilles says that no one should ever have power over him. So, must one be
called of no account and a coward if I must carry out every order you may happen to give me....

Anthem. Anthem by Ayn Rand tells the story of a street sweeper named Equality 7 2521 that

Throughout the novel, Anthem conveys themes of governmental monopoly and the loss of

Black Holes, By John Archibald Wheeler
Black holes are one of the most mysterious aspects of the Universe. Scientists know that black
holes contain an insane amount of matter packed into a small space with a gravitational field so
intense that not even light can escape it. This review will focus primarily on what is known about
black holes, how scientists know black holes exist, current studies and experiments, and why they
are studied. Based off the knowledge humans have already uncovered about black holes, they could
change the future. Black holes could realistically be used to power starships, enabling humans to
travel at near light speed to explore the Cosmos. Humans would be able to conquer the most
unknown frontier yet.

Gamma ray bursts from collisions or collapses signify the birth of a new black hole. Immense
amounts of energy are released during formations, and it is at the center of a black hole, its
singularity, that the laws of physics break down. As claimed by NASA, during each formation
of a black hole, the black hole will reach an event horizon , where time appears to slow to an
outside observer. See Figure 1 to view the parts of a black hole. Eventually during formation,
time will stop, the star will not collapse anymore, and it will be frozen. To an outside observer, an
object that reaches the event horizon and falls into a black hole would appear to never fully go
in. This is because of the process called Spaghettification , which explains that if a human were
to fall in, the force of gravity of their feet would be millions of times greater than the force on
their head, so in a literal sense, they would stretch out and become flat before going in. It would
literally appear to be an illusion because to the human falling in, time passes normally, yet slows
for an outside observer. Time was discovered to slow near black holes when it was observed that
light curves and bends when nearing a black hole. The only way to explain this bend is with
Einstein s theory of general relativity and his concept of space time. Space time is the idea that
space is actually a fabric that is warped by gravity. Einstein concluded that space and time cannot be

Conversion of Alcohol to Alkyl Halides
Introduction In this experiment, Conversion of Alcohol to Alkyl Halides and alcohol is
converted to an alkyl halide through SN1 or an SN2 mechanism. This is done by using 1
propanol and 2 pentantol with HBr, Hydrobromic acid. Only half of the groups will use 1
propanol, and 2 pentantol. All results are analyzed using NMR and IR. An SN1 reaction, requires
two steps. The first step, using an alcohol as an reactant, is the pronation of the OH group from
the R group. This produces a cation intermediate. The cation intermediate is attacked by the Br
group, from HBr. This is the second step. An SN2 mechanism, is only one step, unimolecular , and
spontaneous. In an alcohol, the Br group will attack at the water, H2O, is leaving the reaction. The
R group attacks to the Bromine leaving an excess water. Figure 1 Mechanism for 2 Pentantol SN1

Historical Leader Synthesis Essay On Sir Winston Churchill
Historical Leader Synthesis Essay on Sir Winston Churchill
Soaked in sweat, I ran to the library to get a book on a historical leader before they were all gone.
I would like to think I found a great leader, but I think one found me. As I was reading a book on
great leaders of World War II, I initially focused on American leaders, but Sir Winston S.
Churchill seemed fit my exact requirements. Sir Winston S. Churchill was a Visionary and
Ethical Leader. In the following pages, I will explain how Winston was a visionary leader and
how he used Inspirational Motivation and global diversity to gain advantage during World War II. I
will also explain how he critically thought through a gut wrenching decision by using Dr. Toner s

In Harmon s (1991) article, he details a scene where Sir Winston Churchill is sitting around the
strategy table, debating the benefits of area bombing. Area bombing is a tactic where an area is
indiscriminately bombed, regardless of military objective. During the meeting Winston stood up
and proclaimed, Are we beasts, are we taking this too far (Harmon, 1991, p. 3). LM03, Ethical
Leadership, discusses Dr. Toner s three P s, which are principle, purpose, and people (DAF, 2014c,
p. 7). To me, Winston Churchill put the three P s in the correct order when he decided to
commence area bombings. He put the principle of freedom and justice before the purpose of
winning the war and finally, he put the people in their proper place of third. Had he not made
this decision, who knows how many more would have died. The air raids killed innocent women
and children, but many others today enjoy freedom and liberty because of this decision. The war
continued and as the German people became war weary, ended in 1945 due, in part, to Churchill
s proper use of the three P s. Making a decision like this takes guts, resolve, and most importantly
an ability to see the second and third order effects. Winston Churchill would not have made the
decision to area bomb had he not known that its effect on the German people would cause them
to lose their will to fight, therefore limiting the endless supply of troops Hitler seemed to be able
to acquire. This, to me, is why Course 14 intertwined the critical thinking and ethical leadership
modules. On Facione s scoring rubric from CF03, Critical Thinking, I would definitely have given
Winston s decision to use area bombing a 4 out of 4 (DAF, 2014b, p. 24). In the strategy brief, he
interpreted the evidence

Technological advancement in travel and communication changed the American people s views of
the world, therefore changing the direction of American foreign policy. This shift in foreign policy
would eventually lead the United States into the grips of two horrific wars on the European
continent. However, these wars would provide the necessary environment for the country to
establish itself as the leader of the international system a title it would desperately need tin order to
attempt to create a new, less conflict ridden global order. Though World War Iset the stage for the
United States to assume a global leadership role, which then set the stage for a second world war,
it is not to say that the United States ever wanted anything to do with a European war in the first
place. I argue that the U. S. failures to prevent World War I and World War II was due to a series
of actions and events beginning at the turn of the century (a domino effect) that made it impossible
to avoid joining either war once they began.
Samuel Morse s telegraph revolutionized long distance communication, making it possible for near
instant communication, even across such a vast space like the Atlantic Ocean. Equally important as
the telegraph, advancements in the capabilities of the steam

Color Psychology
Color is defined as the quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the
object, usually determined visually by measurement of hue, saturation, and brightness of the
reflected light; saturation or chroma; hue (Webster s Dictionary). Color is an extremely powerful
psychological tool used across the globe. Our world would be bland and boring without the use of
colorin our everyday lives. Using color psychology can encourage sales, calm a crowd, and even
help a person send a positive (or negative) message. Many companies use color psychology in their
marketing schemes. June Campbell, writer for Nightcates Multimedia Productions, states, Colors
not only enhance the appearance of the item they also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, even schools are getting in on a bit of color psychology. Some schools are known to
paint the locker room of the opposing team in pink. Yes, pink. Pink drains energy out of a person
and causes fatigue a very strategic move. Prisons are also known to use pink in their jail cells
because it drains all the negative energy from the inmates. Culture has a large influence on the
meanings of color as well. First, China looks at colors differently than we do here in America.
Let us take a look at the color red once again. In China red is the color worn by brides. If a
Chinese woman were to wear white for her wedding, her parents would not allow her to marry.
Secondly, in India red is also a symbol of purity and good luck, which is why it is the traditional
wedding gown color. Also, yellow is said to be a sacred and imperial color for their culture.
Now, in America, we have different meanings for certain colors than other countries, and our flag
colors and symbols best represent us as a whole. The white represents purity and innocence, red
signifies valor and hardiness, and blue stands for justice, perseverance, and vigilance. The stars
show the heavens and all the good that people strive for, while the strips emulate the sun s rays.
Breaking down each country s flag by symbol and color only shows, in more detail, the background

Test Battery Autism
Autism is a developmental disability that presents at an early age (typically under the age of three
years) that can affect a child s educational performance. Child and adults can have deficiencies in
communication, social skills, and using language. People with autism tend to engage in motor/vocal
stereotypy. The spectrum for autism has a wide range from mild to severe. To determine where a
child falls on the spectrum many assessments can be administered.
If a child is believed to be on the spectrum, a CARS2 assessment may be issued. The Childhood
Autism Rating Scale (Second Edition) helps distinguish children that have autism from those who
are developmentally handicapped. It also allows you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first two subtest address fifteen items. The Standard and High functioning forms have
overlapping sections. Items addressed in both assessments are relating to people, body use, visual
response, taste smell, and touch response and use, verbal communication, nonverbal
communication, level and consistency of intellectual response and general impressions. Imitation,
emotional response, object use, adaptation to change fear or nervousness, and activity level is
focused on solely in the Standard form subtest. For the High functioning form Social emotional
understanding, emotional expression and regulation of emotions, adaption to change/restricted
interest, fear of anxiety, and thinking cognitive integration skills are the main emphasis.
The administrator will rate each item using a four point response scale. The rating is based on not
only a child s response but also their behavior during their session. An administrated also takes into
consideration student s intensity, peculiarity, and duration of a answer. The CARS2 assessment is
a good place to start when a child is believed to have autism spectrum disorder.
The Verbal Behavior Milestone Assessment and Placement Program (VB MAPP) is a criterion
referenced assessment for child with autism that demonstrates language delays. It analyzes verbal
behavior and developmental milestones. There are five components of the VB MAPP. These
components provide baseline performance, a direction for intervention, a

Minotaur In Ancient Greek Mythology
What is a Minotaur? Definiton Myth
The Minotaur was one of the most famous creatures of ancient mythology. In this lesson, we ll
explore the legend of the Minotaur, and see how this story may have been created.
The Minotaur
Imagine winding your way through the most complex maze in history, only to come face to face
with a monstrous creature with the body of a human and the head of a bull. That ll keep you up at
night. This beast, known as the Minotaur, is one of the most fearsome creatures of ancient Greek
mythology. Today, we often refer to any creature that is part bull and part human as a minotaur, but
in mythology there was really only the Minotaur, and he was one scary monster.

Before the rise of Athenian civilization, the island of Crete was home to the first true civilization
of Europe. We know very little about them, and in fact, we don t even know what they called
themselves. We call them the Minoans, after king Minos. One symbol of the Minoan kings was the
bull.
The Minoans had an incredible civilization with the oldest large scale architecture in Europe, and
their greatest achievement was the palace complex at Knossos. A unique feature of this sprawling
palace was its movable walls, which could be rearranged to create an elaborate network of hallways
and rooms.
With its maze like layout, Knossos may have felt like a labyrinth to outsiders null By the time that
ancient Athens was developing, the Minoan civilization had already been basically abandoned.
Elements of Minoan history, however, seem to have worked their way into Athenian mythologies.
Many historians now believe that the Labyrinth legend was inspired by the complex and maze like
palace of Knossos. The Minotaur was a product of the bull imagery associated with Minoan kings.
In this context, Theseus defeat of the Minotaur and marrying of Minos daughter could symbolize a
transition of power in the Mediterranean. Minoan civilization was going into decline, while
Athenian civilization was on the

Compare And Contrast Meryl Streep And Alvin Ailey
Everyone has a role model. The two people I admire are Meryl Streep and Alvin Ailey. They both
show to me how to work hard, take the time to perfect your craft, and to follow your dreams. The
performing arts business can be tricky because there is a great deal of competition. However,
Meryl Streep and Alvin Ailey never stopped trying and made great accomplishments in their
fields. Meryl Streep has gone far beyond perfecting her craft. She is an American actress who
has been said to be the greatest actress of her generation. One sign of great actress is the ability
to play different roles. She has played both dramatic roles, such as in Sophie s Choice and
comedic roles such as in Mamma Mia!. I personally enjoy her dramatic roles the best. She

  • 2. Organ Systems And The Nervous System Essay The six main organ systems in the human body are the nervous system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, digestive system, skeletal system and the reproductive system. Nervous System There are two parts to the nervous system which are: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and some nerves, whereas the peripheral nervous system includes all the other nerves and it carries information to the central nervous system and also from it. The central nervous acts as the central control region of the human nervous system. The CNS processes information and issues commands around the body. The autonomic nervous system is the command network the CNS uses to maintain the body s homeostasis. It regulates heartbeat and controls muscle contractions in the walls of blood vessels, digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It also carries messages that help stimulate glands to secrete tears, mucus, and digestive enzymes. Central nervous system A response to a stimulus is coordinated by its central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the environment. Receptors detect a stimulus and send impulses along sensory neurons to the CNS. The CNS coordinates the information and sends impulses along motor neurons to the effectors, which bring about a response. The sequence of a response is: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Prufrock Paralysis Explore the theme of paralysis in Prufrock. What are Prufrock s goals and dreams in the poem and why is he unable to achieve them? I spent my entire life trying to capture the decisive moment, but every moment in life was a decisive moment, says Henry Cartier Bresson (1). Prufrock is a man with great inhibitions who only dares to dream of professing his affection to a woman. Throughout the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrockby Thomas Elliot, the narrator has expressed certainty about his beloved s interest in him, and he is more than inclined on accepting it. However, due to Prufrock s low self esteem and apathy, he regretfully allows the opportunity to pass him by. Prufrock ponders about what could have been: Would it have... Profrock s inferiority complex is apparently shown throughout the narration of the poem, as he repeatedly addressing his frail arms and legs and balding hair. As a matter of fact, he contemplates on following through the most trivial things such as parting his hair back or eating a peach in front of people. Winston Churchill once says: To improve is to change; to perfect is to change often (1). Perfection is a dynamic concept that demands its beholder to change accordingly. On the contrary, Prufrock makes no attempt to overcome his insecurities, while he, instead, blames himself for his cowardice. Furthermore, he finds consolation in women s ridicules and hostility due to the fact that they pay him some degree of attention. At this point, the narrator s social anxiety and sexual frustration is readily apparent to everyone. Therefore, it is completely reasonable how he cannot summon the proper ambition to ask his overwhelming question. • 8. Kaze No Denwa Short Story Kaze No Denwa It is April 11, 2011, and one month has passed since the great Japanese tsunami splintered the island. In a small coastal village, a man parks his car at a distance and walks towards the only object in a large field: Kaze No Denwa, the Phone of the Wind. Tears begin to well in his eyes as he feels the gentle breeze wash over him. His shoes crunch the loose gravel underfoot. On this day, there is no one else around. In the middle of the field stands a white phone booth. It glows boldly in the bright afternoon sunlight. The man walks along a winding path through low cut, manicured underbrush. He reaches the phone booth, slides open the door, and enters. He takes his time, looks around, and finally picks up the receiver from atop an old fashioned black rotary phone. He places a finger into a small circle at his desired number, gently spins clockwise, releases, and repeats nine times. The phone in Kaze No Denwa is connected to nothing; there is no electricity here, no dial tone even, but the man is not surprised. If you can hear me, he says, please listen carefully. He stops, looks around the tiny phone box, and sobs, wiping the tears from his eyes with a sleeve. Please, let me hear your voice say Daddy again. He covers his eyes with the sleeve and gently whispers, I m so sorry I couldn t save you. I will forever be sorry and shamed. His head falls, his eyes close. His name is Satsuko. He has travelled far to visit Kaze No Denwa. The great tsunami has brought havoc and, with it, many lives have gone to that place where spirits reside. Sadness has punctuated the land, and Satsuko is in its midst. His face and demeanour are altered. Kaze No Denwa, the Phone of the Wind is becoming well known. Its back story and sentiment have resonated with the people. He read about it in a magazine published the year prior; the story of an old man s burning wish, long before the tsunami, to communicate with his deceased relative. A phone booth was set in the middle of a field tilled by hand and hoe for generations, a place for the old man to air his grief, where his breath could catch the wind and set out across the field, down the cliff face, and across the vast blue Pacific. From this poetry it has allowed the public to see the real harshness behind the glamourized version advertised by the government. The poetry not only acts as a clear insight into the war but it also gave the public something to really agree with causing them to be read or listened to again and again. It is due to the great writing style of Wilfred Owen and his use of poetic devices such as metaphors and personification that gives it an even deeper meaning. Owens main concern behind his poetry was to reveal the horrors of war and reveal the harsh reality that is always covered up by the Government. He successfully did this through every piece of poetry he wrote revealing yet another piece of the hidden truth. Once things like Owens poetry arose gradually more people thought the war was futile which is exactly what he expressed in his poem futility. This switch would provide farmers another source of income and would also help to prevent the spread of the insect. The one problem with this solution was that no one knew what to do with all the peanut crops. Carver was quoted as saying: we can learn to synthesize materials for every human need from the things that grow. So that is what he did. In total, Carver was able to create close to three hundred different products from the peanut plant. • 18. Evaluate My Reading Process It never occurred to me before to take some time and evaluate my reading process and my reading habits. I ve done tons of readings throughout my whole life, including articles and abstracts for school and just some novels and fiction books for entertainment. However, I barely paid attention at any of my readingroutine. All I was concentrated on were either getting the information I need from the text or, in case of a novel, enjoying the plot. Up until recently I had no idea if the way I was readingis productive or not, but after accomplishing my assignment for English class to read the texts from On Creative Reading , I tried to look at my reading process from a different angle. I noticed that some writing styles make it harder for me to read, concentrate and follow the idea of the text, if the writing consists of very long phrases and is overloaded with some difficult expressions and lots of unknown terms. On the other hand, if the author tries to keep the phrases more or less simple and clear, tries to hold my interests and makes the whole thing easy to follow, all those things make my reading process more pleasurable. Surely, the topic I m researching plays a prominent role in the level of pleasure I m receiving during the reading. I m more interested in reading some articles on photography or psychology rather than finance or physics. I would enjoy more reading some fiction than some assignments for school. Richard E. Miller and Ann Jurecic, the authors of Habits of the Creative Mind, point out that reading process is not the same for everyone. They ask questions like Once the process of reading has been routinized and internalized, why is that different people reading different material reach different conclusions? Or to put this another way, why is there ambiguity? (Miller and Jurecic 80). Indeed, after reading the same text, each of us will make different conclusions and have different feelings about what we ve read. A lot depends on our previous knowledge and beliefs, ability to analyze information and many other factors. I often catch myself reading about online TV shows if they have really interesting theories and plot lines that derive from myths or other similar sources. On ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The theme is stated in the story word for word Love: It will kill you and save you, both. In the story, the whole country believes that love will kill you, using common day mental illnesses such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder as side effects to the euphoria. However, love being a sickness may not be true, it can become a complication many face today. People rip each other apart over the feeling; cheating, lying, and betrayal being major issues. However, love also makes people happy, complete, and full at the same time. It s no different in the novel; people ran in fear of the feeling of heartbreak and sadness from love, not realizing how good it makes people feel. The author used the theme as a bit of a warning; to always be careful, but to never be scared. The proposed height for The George is 25 metres which is approximately 8 stories, double the current OCP restrictions. Judge Posner s Challenge to the Philosophy of Law Essay Judge Posner s Challenge to the Philosophy of Law ABSTRACT: This paper presents a conceptual analysis of Richard Posner s empirical theory of judicial behavior. His theory opposes the conventional view which holds that judges are insulated from external pressures so their judicial decisions will be based upon a disinterested understanding of the law. Since economics holds that all people including judges attempt to maximize their utilities, Posner thinks that the conventional view is an embarrassment which presumes judges are not rational. His theory holds that the judicial insulation has actually left judges maximizing their utilities by trading judicial utility against leisure utility. Posner s theory presents a challenge to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Economics holds that people make decisions based on efforts to maximize their utilities. That is sometimes expressed as an attempt to maximize happiness or self interest. Two of Adam Smith s insights are especially relevant here. A micro thesis holds that in the commercial world people attempt to maximize their own utility while a macro thesis holds that in a competitive economy, the pursuit of utilities on the part of producers and consumers automatically leads to maximum welfare. Economists refer to utility maximization as rational, and say any exceptions are so rare that they do not pose significant exception to the general economic assumption. Posner is concerned because the conventional view of judicial behavior presumes that judges and justices are, on these terms, irrational. For the purposes of his analysis, Posner concentrates on judges and justices referenced in Article III of the US Constitution. I will follow his lead here, though both of us recognize extrapolation to other judicial settings would be reasonably simple. From an international perspective, Article III judges have been more exempted from the temptations and constraints of employment than other judges. Posner points out that Article III judicial tenure is even more secure than academic tenure: A federal judge can be lazy, lack judicial temperament, mistreat his staff, berate without reason the lawyers who appear ... Immense amounts of energy are released during formations, and it is at the center of a black hole, its singularity, that the laws of physics break down. As claimed by NASA, during each formation of a black hole, the black hole will reach an event horizon , where time appears to slow to an outside observer. See Figure 1 to view the parts of a black hole. Eventually during formation, time will stop, the star will not collapse anymore, and it will be frozen. To an outside observer, an object that reaches the event horizon and falls into a black hole would appear to never fully go in. This is because of the process called Spaghettification , which explains that if a human were to fall in, the force of gravity of their feet would be millions of times greater than the force on their head, so in a literal sense, they would stretch out and become flat before going in. It would literally appear to be an illusion because to the human falling in, time passes normally, yet slows for an outside observer. Time was discovered to slow near black holes when it was observed that light curves and bends when nearing a black hole. The only way to explain this bend is with Einstein s theory of general relativity and his concept of space time. Space time is the idea that space is actually a fabric that is warped by gravity. In Harmon s (1991) article, he details a scene where Sir Winston Churchill is sitting around the strategy table, debating the benefits of area bombing. Area bombing is a tactic where an area is indiscriminately bombed, regardless of military objective. During the meeting Winston stood up and proclaimed, Are we beasts, are we taking this too far (Harmon, 1991, p. 3). LM03, Ethical Leadership, discusses Dr. Toner s three P s, which are principle, purpose, and people (DAF, 2014c, p. 7). To me, Winston Churchill put the three P s in the correct order when he decided to commence area bombings. He put the principle of freedom and justice before the purpose of winning the war and finally, he put the people in their proper place of third. Had he not made this decision, who knows how many more would have died. The air raids killed innocent women and children, but many others today enjoy freedom and liberty because of this decision. The war continued and as the German people became war weary, ended in 1945 due, in part, to Churchill s proper use of the three P s. Making a decision like this takes guts, resolve, and most importantly an ability to see the second and third order effects. Winston Churchill would not have made the decision to area bomb had he not known that its effect on the German people would cause them to lose their will to fight, therefore limiting the endless supply of troops Hitler seemed to be able to acquire. This, to me, is why Course 14 intertwined the critical thinking and ethical leadership modules. A New World Order For The United States A New World Order The 20th century brought with it a plethora of technological advancements that acted as a catalyst for an important and lasting shift in the United State s perception of its role in the world. Technological advancement in travel and communication changed the American people s views of the world, therefore changing the direction of American foreign policy. This shift in foreign policy would eventually lead the United States into the grips of two horrific wars on the European continent. However, these wars would provide the necessary environment for the country to establish itself as the leader of the international system a title it would desperately need tin order to attempt to create a new, less conflict ridden global order. Though World War Iset the stage for the United States to assume a global leadership role, which then set the stage for a second world war, it is not to say that the United States ever wanted anything to do with a European war in the first place.
