doing taxes. In the novel, Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons, Ellen does not have the luxury
of toys and candy. In lieu of being an ordinary eleven year old girl, Ellen is compelled to
grow up and mature as a result of her familysituation. While living with her birth parents,
she witnesses her motherbeing abused by her drunk father. Ellen s viewpoints are
