My Earliest Memory
My earliest memory is from the one day when my ordinary life had collapsed. Out of
all of our memory, majority of people would remember their most peaceful memory
from their childhood. I may have probably be one of them, if I did not experienced
such a horrifying moment as a age of four. I remember each part of the scene vividly
and it is probably the memory that had a strongest impact on me for the rest of my life.
My earliest memory was when I was four years old in my small apartment in Maryland.
It was an ordinary day until I saw my parents taken somewhere far away that I had no
clue of.
The day started off normally, I woke up at my bed feeling the bright warm sunlight on
my face. As I get off of my bed and looked out of the window,... Show more content on

I spent my day peacefully in school learning new information and just talking with my
friends. After school, I was walking back to my home alone. I remember the neighbour
family in the morning, I picked up some dandelions from the roadside to show my
family. I took it back carefully as possible as I can back home so the white fluff on the
dandelion wouldn t blow away. When I finally arrived in front of my house, I saw my
mother sitting in front of the entrance door with her face down on to her knee. When
she looked up and found me in front of her, her face looked nothing like what I used to
recognize her or what I would except a mother to look like in front of her child. She
looked terribly tired and frightened as if she was chased by a murderer. Then, she
demanded me to open the door grabbing my shoulders hardly. For a moment, I couldn t
move nor say anything. I was frightened of how she looked at me, I abandoned the
option of saying no to her and so I did what she asked. I knocked on the door as usually
I would and shouted at the door Dad, I m back home! . Then the door opened slowly,
at a glance I saw some pieces of glass and knife on the floor and my father with his face
completely red. I was confused of what was happening at the room. Then my mother
broke into the house and slammed the door hard. The door was closed again in front of
Baseball Protypes
It s fantasy baseball playoff time, and if you made all the right moves during the
regular season, you re battling for your league title. Now is not the time to be timid.
Holding on tightly to veteran pitchers may seem like a good strategy, but it can
backfire. When you follow rosters, keeping up with the MLB lineups using information
from sites such as FantasyAlarm.com, you know there are young pitchers making their
way to the big show. Some of these pitchers clearly realize this may be their one and
only chance to shine. First, you need to appreciate a couple reasons why these young
pitchers have a chance to do really well. Then you calculate which ones have the highest

В·Carson Fulmer The White Sox have three strong prospects for their future. They are
going to play out the string in 2017 looking at which of these pitchers steps forward.
Fulmer is one of the more intriguing of this trio of pitching prospects. Much of his
minor league difficulties have centered on control issues. Too many free passes have
lead to a balloon in his ERA. At times, he has used his mid 90s fastball to mow down
hitters, while at other times he can t seem to locate with consistency. Fulmer had
tossed 6 innings with only three Ks out of the bullpen since his call up, but nailed 9
San Francisco hitters in his first start. He has his future in front of him, and his 3 hit,
1 run performance in his first start turned the heads of the White Sox brass. Look for
Fulmer to pitch his final opportunities with a sense of purpose. В·Lucas Giolito Giolito
s fantasy numbers in his first four starts have accounted for two masterful
performances, sandwiched in the middle of two defensive collapses by his fielders.
He allowed 1 earned run, scattering only a half dozen hits over 14 innings in two
victories. He maintained his 1K/inning rate in those two wins. In his other two starts,
the White Sox defense fell apart. It led to a momentary loss of concentration against San
Francisco, leading to 4 walks. Giolito still gave up only three hits in 5 plus innings of
work, so the potential is obviously there. Giolito may have the
Importance Of Medical Ethics And Its Development...
Importance of Medical Ethics and its Development throughout History For thousands
of years medicine has been executed by competent and well trained licensed
individuals dating back to the 5th century BCE where the Hippocratic Oath was taken
by physicians. The Hippocratic Oath (Modern) reads, I swear to fulfill, to the best of
my ability and judgment, this covenant: I will respect the hard won scientific gains of
those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine
with those who are to follow. I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which
are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will
remember that there is art to medicineas well as science, and... Show more content on

These ethics have not only kept good order and discipline but they have also allowed
world renowned physicians such as Dr. Achibald McIndoe, Dr.Vivien T. Thomas,
Dr.James Blundell, Dr.Joseph Lister, Dr. Edward Jenner, and others to push the envelope
allowing groundbreaking development and overall better medicine that we practice today
in modern civilization. Personal prejudice has no place in a doctor s life. For example, he
should treat his patient suffering from alcoholic cirrhosis, or from chronic bronchitis,
even though it is the patient s habit for consuming alcohol or smoking. The doctor cannot
be ethical by refusing treatment to his patient; on the contrary the doctor should treat him
with sympathy. If the physician withholds his service it is considered as shedding blood.
In clinical practice, patient s best interests are safe guarded by his physician s duty to
choose tests and treatments that seem best for the individual s need. To safeguard
patients, investigators, institutions, and the public, various research related practices and
regulations have been developed. These codes help us understand and work more
effectively in the ethically interesting domain of clinical investigations conducted in
human subjects. Seven essential requirements of ethical
The Mutual Impact Between Amsterdam And The Voc
The Mutual Impact Between Amsterdam and the VOC The Verenigde Oostindische
Compagnie, or The Dutch East India Company, was the first multinational corporation
in history (Shorto 103). In the interest of conserving space, the Verenigde Oostindische
Compagnie will be shortened to the VOC in this paper. Founded in 1602, the VOC
was primarily a trading company, but also had the power to declare wars, create
colonies, and negotiate treaties (Briney). The VOC s massive reach across the globe and
its ability to transport large quantities of goods caused entire populations to rely on
foreign tradeto survive (Shorto 104). Even Japan, who had a general policy of refusing
foreign trade, allowed the VOC to trade with them for two centuries... Show more content

Early Amsterdammers were at war with water because the settlers needed to drain the
marshy terrain to obtain land suitable for building and farming. The owner of any
given parcel of land was responsible for seeing that the dykes that held back the water
were maintained and keeping their land dry. If one neglected their duties, water would
sweep in and cause destruction to not only the negligent party s land, but everyone s
(Mak 11). Flooding caused destruction of property and crops and essentially lowered
chances of survival. Because it was vital to cooperate with others, despite potential
differences and disagreements, the Dutch developed a pragmatic and collaborative
outlook. Draining water to create land also affected the area s geography. To remove
the water, it had to be directed into canals that ran directly into the ocean or natural
rivers (Mak 11). These canals proved to be an advantage, as traders could easily anchor
and load boats directly where their homes or stores were. Although this made loading
goods easier, traders first had to take convoluted routes through twisting rivers to sell
their wares because their boats were unfit for the open sea. Then, with the invention of a
ship called a cog, trading routes could now stretch across seas. The cogs themselves
could also carry five to ten times more cargo than earlier boats. Because Dutch traders
could go to farther ports to trade, their cities, namely Amsterdam, became
Art Teacher Disadvantages
Recommendation
After carefully evaluating three possible solutions that were presented in the previous
section on implementing arts integration into the classroom, this paper will recommend
the solution be, hiring an art teacher. As stated before, hiring additional teachers, for most
tend to be very helpful. It can relieve stress and any additional preparation that comes
with arts integration. The teacher would be able to divide the work load with the hired
art teacher.
Limitations of Analysis
There are two significant limitations within the research that are important to address.
While doing research on arts integration the amount of empirical evidence was lacking in
regard to hiring an art teacher. There have not been enough studies done yet on the time
and the cost it takes to hire an arts teacher for each school. The information that was
provided in the previous section was also lacking important data about how much a
school spends on hiring a new teacher. Another limitation would the lack of testimonies
from the students, making sure if hiring an art teacher is beneficial for them.
Concessions
In making this recommendation there are two concessions that need to be considered:
one being increasing art supplies and the other being professional development. Both
these options offer different alternatives for integrating arts into the classroom. Increase
supplies takes little to no time to order, therefore it would be the fastest option it order to
make sure students
Can India Sustain Its Present Economic Growth Rate
Can India sustain its present economic growth rate?
India is an emerging economy that is witnessing unprecedented levels of economic
expansion. It is widely expected that India may overtake China as the world s fastest
growing major economy by 2015. However it is not easy to sustain high levels of
economic growth rates. There were a number of countries that experienced a high
economic growth rate but were unable to sustain it for a long period of time. In order to
determine whether India can sustain its economic growth rate we need to study the
various factors that create an impact on India s economy.
There are several factors that have positive impact on India s economic growth rate. The
first is India s demography. India is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The literacy rate of India is only 66%. Shortage of skill aggravates the problem of
developing the infrastructure (Chrystal amp; Lipsey, 2003). Builders, electricians and
plumbers are often scarce.
Nevertheless, Indian government is trying its level best to tackle these problems.
Efforts are under way to get the private sector involved in building world class
infrastructure. The skill shortage, too, is being addressed. The literacy rate is rising
quickly. Among 15 24 years old, it is over 80%. In an attempt to curb corruption and
make India more business friendly, several reforms are being introduced. All these
corrective efforts coupled with the favorable factors will ensure that India will be able to
sustain its current economic growth rate.

Social Darwinism In Frank Norris Mcteague
Social Darwinism is the Survival of the Fittest so in other words, the strongest and
fittest survive and flourish in society, while the weak should be allowed to die. This
theory is the basis for Frank Norris s novel McTeague. Norris believed that whatever
social class you were born in, that should be the social class that you stay in. In Frank
Norris McTeague, couples Zerkow and Maria, and Trina and McTeague exemplify the
concept of Social Darwinism as seen through the rise and the downfall of their lives.
Regardless of their European descent, McTeague and Trina s economic status changed
too quickly which led them to their downfall. When Trina wins five thousand dollars
playing the lottery, McTeague immediately moves up the social ladder.
Essay Comparing Grey s Anatomy And Empire
While hit TV series Grey s Anatomy and Empire are both extremely popular, they differ
greatly in the language used. In order to complete this project, I took linguistic concepts
I had learned about in the text such as grammar, context, and communicative
competence and applied them to the language usage in these TV series. A lot can be
assumed about different characters based solely on their speech. Take for instance two
of the main characters in Grey s Anatomy, Meredith and Derek. Simply by listening to
their proper grammar, it is noticeable that they have received a formal education and are
quite intelligent. We would most likely assume that they grew up in a middle class home
with working parents who could afford their education.

There is not a wide variety in speech in each show. Grey s Anatomy is typically more
formal and professional while Empire is slightly less formal. The characters mentioned
so far have been couples or former couples. Because of this, they speak differently with
each other than they do with other characters in the show. A strong use of
communicative practices is apparent for all characters. For example, Meredith and
Derek from Grey s Anatomy are married. They have more casual conversation with one
another compared to Meredith and her boss, Richard. Lucious and Cookie are a former
couple. They may have a more personal relationship but there is obvious tension between
them. Each character has a different discourse genre. While I have not watched every
episode of these two television programs, from what I have observed, code switching
has not occurred. While there is a wide variety in regards to the ethnicity of different
characters, none of them are multilingual. However, it is possible that code switching
could occur in future episodes. For example, in Grey s Anatomy they get many
different types of patients. It is very likely that one of those patients may speak two
languages and switch in times of stress. The same is true of Empire. The clientele dealt
with in Empire ranges and there is a strong possibility one of those characters could

Seedfolks Character Analysis
In the book Seedfolks, a character named Kim enters a vacant lot in her town,
Cleveland, Ohio, to plant Lima Beans to honor her father, who passed away before
Kim was even born. While Kim is in the process of planting her beans and watering
them daily, people around the vacant lot being to notice her actions . Many people
followed what Kim was doing and made their own little garden, which causes the
community of Cleveland to be together and to communicate with one another.
Throughout the book many characters come and go in the garden, and each character
shares something in common with someone else. The garden brings people together,
and helps them communicate with one another, without the garden, some people might
never have communicated with someone that has a different appearance as them. The
novel Seedfolks shows us, that the garden changed everyone s perspectives on people
in their community and how they judge them by appearance. It shows how you can
give someone chances, before you can judge them. Some people that show this theme,
are Kim, Ana, Sae Young, Maricela, Sam, and Curtis. Kim is the one who started the
garden, and her father died before she was even born. Kim says I started at my father s
photograph his thin face stern, lips latched tight, his eyes permanently peering to the
right. I was nine and still hoped perhaps his eyes might move (pg.1).She explains how
her father had died and she didn t ever get to meet him, and she wishes she had some kind

The process of SWOT analysis is a universal method widely approached in corporations to
scan the internal and external environment so that companies can deploy relevant

weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (Helms Nixon, 2010).
The four elements of SWOT analysis are classified as two different analysed objectives,

Socratic Method Of Teaching And Study Philosophy
1. Explain some of the benefits a student may gain by studying philosophy.
Some of the benefits a student gains by studying philosophy is having the ability to gain
knowledge and think more clearly. You learn skills, seek wisdom and get an
understanding of our world through various branches. Helps us appreciate where the
world came from, where we came from. Using our critical thinking we evaluate
information and reach a conclusion due to the analyzation. We learn ethics, what is real,
how others see things. We gain cognitive, moral and spiritual development by studying
philosophy.
2. Explain the Socratic Method of Teaching. Is this a useful way for students to learn?
Socratic Method is a way of thinking that involves three steps, first step is you give an
initial definition, second step you find exceptions to that definition and you present them
in a form of question. Then the third step you give a better definition of the concept.
Repeat all these steps until you discover the essence of the concept. Socratic method has
its pros and cons not every student learns the same way it might be a good method for
one student or might be easier for one but not for the other. Everyone is unique and
different.
3. Explain how critical thinking can be used to analyze a philosophical issue.
Critical thinking is about making sure that you have good reasons for your beliefs.
Critical thinking is used by reasoning and examining the information given to her person
to analyze a
Beatrice And Benedick Alternate Ending
The clatter of china surrounded the small group of adults, small talk traded between too
bright smiles. It was the day of the wedding, Claudio and Hero to be married off in
mere minutes. A playful jab was shared between Beatrice and Benedick, words flying out
faster than arrows. Leonato stood, using a dainty teaspoon to draw attention to himself,
the light chatter fading to a dead silence. Nobody dared talk when the master of the
household did.
It is time, He proclaimed simply, hauling up both his daughter and her soon to be.
Claudio s face was plastered with a dashing smile, but if one looked close enough; long
enough; hard enough; they would see the flames behind his eyes, the anger sheathed until

The flow soon stopped however, Leonato noticing two things. One, the room was silent
once more, and two, the flickering light from the candles had been covered with a thick
cloak, leaving the room and all its guests in a deathly black.
Beatrice was one of the first to recover from the haunting spell placed upon them,
ignoring the moans that had again risen. She moved quickly, silently, grasping Hero
under her arms, finding her cousin out cold. Looking about, she found what she was
looking for, and dragged her to a long forgotten hatch, hiding her in the elderly wine
cellar, now swathed in cobwebs. Leonato began bellowing once more, Claudio joining
him, speaking of broken honours and betrayed trusts. The only maid present, Ursula,

Blood Spurts From The Female Vampire s Chest
Blood spurts from the female vampire s chest, as her human lover drives the stake
further and further into her heart. The scene where Lucy is killed can be interpreted in
different ways due to the varying interpretations of blood. One way to interpret blood
and vampirism in Bram Stoker s Dracula is through the psychoanalytical critical lens.
In this interpretation, blood symbolizes sexual fluid and vampires are a metaphor for
eroticism. The novel was written in Victorian England, which had strict morals
regarding female sexuality. In an article, Jesse Battan describes ideals from this time
period as insist[ing] that women s erotic impulses were shaped by maternal instincts and
a social conscience . Victorian society trained women not to act upon their desires and
instead to repress their sexuality. Lucy Westerna, a main female character in the novel,
has a sleepwalking habit that reveals her subconscious desires. However, as the novel
progresses, her desires are no longer merely subconscious because her sexuality is
expressed through her vampirism. This prompts the hunters to try and remedy this issue
by murdering her. Bram Stoker conveys that Lucy defies Victorian England standards due
to the progression of her character from the typical nineteenth century maiden into a
sensual creature. At the beginning of the novel, Lucy follows society s standards by
suppressing her sexuality and only revealing her repressed desires through her
sleepwalking. After discovering Lucy

The first being the dot mapping method, I had used this method in my map because it
is a highly effective way to show density differences in geographic distributions across
a landscape, and the dots show exactly where the event occurs. The second mapping
method I had used was the proportional point symbol to indicate the scale and size with
simple symbols proportionally to the data value found at that location. Large circles
represent a higher density of population (urban areas) and smaller scale is a smaller
density of population (rural areas). I had use the Miller cylindrical map projection for

the accuracy and clearly defined of local shapes. We are displaying geographic data
and it is important to have a projection that does not distort the area to effectively map
the data. Secondly the map avoids scale exaggeration, which is also important when
mapping geographic data within regions. One manipulation I had made to my map to
improve the communicative effectiveness of my map, was to only emphasize the
borders of France to clearly define the geographic area where the data is applicable.
Advantages to using ArcGIS to map this data was that it provides a great simplistic map
to communicate the data to spatial regions, and the program
Who Is The Antagonist In Room By Emma Donoghue
The novel Room by Emma Donoghue is loosely based on the Josef Fritzl case; in
which a man held his daughter captive, repeatedly raped her, beat her and fathered 8
children with her over a period of 24 years. Room focuses on the love that Ma and Jack
share in their tragic situation, rather than Old Nick the psychopath who committed the
heinous crime. Jack is not represented as a victim due to the fact he is oblivious to his
situation as it is the only reality he s ever known. The first half of the novel focuses on
Ma and Jack being trapped in the room, while the second half focuses on what happens
when they escaped. Ma and Jack are the two main characters who live in the room. Old
Nick is the person who is holding Ma and Jack captive. There are also family and
nurses who help Ma and Jack after they have escaped. Jack is further not represented
as a victim because Ma protects him from the actions of Old Nick and normalises the
situation for him. Donoghue uses homodiegetic narration with Jack. However, Jack is
an inadequate narrator as he doesn t understand a great deal of the things that are
happening around him; due to his age and his mother shielding him from the realities
of his surroundings. For example, Ma takes her pill from the sliver pack that has 28
little spaceships, as a reader we are aware this refers to the contraceptive pill, however,
Jack isn t. Ma and Jack are not portrayed as victims in this novel as even though they are
trapped in this horrible
Practicing Professionalism
Professionalism is the competence expected of an individual to properly execute given
tasks. In dance, it is important to introduce respect, organization, and focus as the
essentials of a performer. Establishing professional methods in class will assist others in
distinguishing your dedication and commitment to the artform. Practicing
professionalism in daily performance leads to improved performance in the future
because of repetitive conduct during classes. If a dancer consistently puts forth the
effort to work hard and focus in class, they are more likely to adopt these concepts into
their everyday lifestyle and develop their talent more. Famous ballerinas such as Misty
Copeland and Tamara Rojo have led successful careers in the world of
Specialties Nursing Shortage
Specialty areas in need While there is a nursing shortage through many sectors of
healthcare there seems to be an especially hard hit shortage in specialty areas. There
are a wide range of specialities available in Illinois but there are going to be some
shortages of specific specialites in the near future. These specialties are ICU, neonatal,
dialysis, OR, pysch, and ER nursing (idfpr sanderstorm?). There are a few contributing
factors to shortages in these areas; these factors are aging workforce with many nurses in
theses specialties getting ready to retire, less school clinical experience in these
specialties, and expansion of these services (gysto). It is common that younger nurses are
attracted to these locations because of increased

Positive Effects Of Confucianism In China
When considering the vast multitude of religions or schools of thought with dedicated
followings, it would be hard to ignore Confucianism. It has single handedly made the
greatest impact on Chinese society overall, an impact that persists to this day. It is as a
whole, a political ideology, a moral and ethical guide but most importantly a religion. The
sentiment argued by many is that it does not share enough characteristics of other
Western religions to be considered one as well. Although Confucianismas a whole is
rooted in ethical and moral teachings, it also speaks of rituals and ancestor worship, thus
allowing it to be considered, by Western standards, a religion. Confucianism, like many
popular religions in modern day China, was established during the Warring States period.
It was created as a way of making sense of the chaos of the world and the unruliness of
the leaders and citizens. China, as a nation, did not become unified until 221 B.C.E when
the Qin dynasty came into fruition as a powerful imperial government. Confucianism,
itself, did not become the state religion until the dynasty following Qin, the... Show more

Confucianism speaks frequently about the cultivation of family values and respect. It
indicates, especially in the five family relationships, that in order for one to become a
virtuous person, he/she would need to demonstrate deep respect for their elders, and as
a result their ancestors. Confucians worship their ancestors almost daily, as many have
ancestor shrines in their homes. Also, in the Ch ing Ming or Ancestor Day, which is a
popular Confucian holiday, many visit family graves and provide offerings for their
ancestors. The worship of a higher, or perhaps spiritual being is evident in almost all
major religions, especially Western religions. Christianity, for example, is based almost
solely on the worshiping of an individual
Human Rights Act of 1998
The aim of this essay is to critically evaluate the statement The European Convention on
Human Rights exists to guarantee legal protection to fundamental rights . It will examine
how rights are protected in law and the way the UK approaches the protection of these
rights. Explanation will be made of the way that the UK addresses the implementation of
the rights in the English legal system. Issues such as conflicting rights and legal
limitations will also be considered. An evaluation will be made of whether or not The
Human RightsAct 1998 protects the fundamental rights of UK citizens as contained in
the European Convention on Human Rights.
Before the Human Rights Act 1998 was passed by parliament it had been considered
unnecessary to incorporate the Convention directly into UK law as it was thought that
the UK already provided adequate protection for its citizens. However, a number of
infringements were identified and this eventually led to the start of the legislative
process which resulted in the Human Rights Act 1998.
Arguments that were put forward for the incorporation of The European Convention on
Human Rights into UK law were partly based on the costs and time considerations
involved in taking cases before the European Court in Strasbourg. The Human Rights Act
1998 gave the citizens of the United Kingdom the right to bring proceedings for the
infringement of these rights before the UK courts. Other lines of reasoning concluded
that the incorporation would
The Pearl Harbor Bombing Of The United States
The Pearl Harbor bombing killed 2335 people and another 1000 were wounded.(Davis,
Paul K.) The Hawaiian fortress and naval base were built with but one potential enemy
in view, Japan. Studies concerning the Japanese bore on their military characteristics. It
was well known that they were given to treachery and surprise. The President himself,
less than a fortnight before Pearl Harbor, remarked that the Japanese are notorious for
making an attack without warning. ( Pearl Harbor in Retrospect. ) The peaceful islands
of Hawaii were ruthlessly attacked by fighter planes, and bombers that killed many
people, but also changed the lives of thousands. On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed the
United Statesin Pearl Harbor, causing the United States to justifiably respond by dropping
the atomic bomb on Japan.
The US was not involved with World War II until after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on
December 7, 1941. The United States was trying to avoid entering World War II at all
costs.(The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica.) There were many problems the United
States was dealing with on its own. The president was Franklin Roosevelt and the
country was attempting to recover from the Great Depression. Unemployment was
nearly twenty percent and many citizens were suffering. The United States goal was to
stay neutral in the war. The belief in the United States was that they had just won the
previous war, World War I on behalf of the allies. The allies of World War I were France,
Absurdity And Society
Philosophy Research paper Extra credit Absurdity and Society According to Camus s
philosophy of absurdity, a person is truly happy when he or she accepts that life is
meaningless. For example, there is no fate, or anything past immediate experience.
The hope of something better in the future is what keeps people happy, which raises a
question; are people truly happy? If a person cannot be happy without finding
meaning, then people must accept existence has no meaning beyond what each
individual makes of it, and by accepting a meaningless fate; people can be truly aware
and therefore happy. Religion is another form of hope. It is something to look forward
to, beyond unpleasant worldly experiences. The majority of society in the world have
a religion of some sort in order to create contentment and to disguise what Camus
believes the world to be, an abyss of meaninglessness. Therefore, it is significant to
consider: without religion, if life was truly meaningless, would it still be important to
perform good deeds. It is also noteworthy for people to consider, if life has no meaning,
is it still important to love, marry, look for adventure or opportunity? Camus s perception
of absurdity can raise many questions that could transform the structure of modern
society entirely. Firstly, it is practical to question if an absurdist would fit into modern
society at all. To this inquiry, Camus answers that it is not so likely in his book The
Stranger. In this book, the main character
Compare And Contrast Socrates And Augustine
The most interesting historical figures that have ever existed are Socrates and St.
Augustine that were in the center of the spiritual life in ancient time. They wanted people
to examine their lives, to find the right path, and to believe that the grace of Christ was
indispensable to human freedom. The philosophers dedicated their lives to seeking
individual wisdom and goodness for the betterment of themselves and their society, and
that they encouraged others by teaching and by example to do the same. Certainly, other
people including Christians had expressed these things before, but Augustine and
Socrates brought an intellectual account and body of reasoned arguments to ground these
ideas. At that time, it was kind of a philosophical revolution.... Show more content on

He believes that the transfer of the knowledge from one person to another is impossible
and unnecessary. True knowledge is contained in a hidden form in the human souland
everyone should bring them to the light of consciousness. Likewise, the man, in
Augustine s view, created by God, who has given him body, soul, mind and free will.
The main duty of human is to follow God s commandments and to be like Christ. He
says Therefore we must return to thee in humble piety and let thee purge us from our
evil ways and be merciful to those who confess their sins to thee, and hear the groanings
of the prisoners and loosen us from those fetters which we have forged for ourselves.
According to Augustine, the main virtues are how to overcome selfishness and learn how

The Provision Of Cost Effective Care
The provision of cost effective care is an integral component in the decision making
process for the nurse practitioner. This process includes the ability to take into
consideration the patient s beliefs and desired outcomes, analyze evidence based
treatment options, and costs of various options, in the development of a treatment plan
that meets the desired health outcome. It is a valuable quality of the nurse practitionerto
establish a working relationship with the patient, provide current information, and allow
the patient to make an informed healthcare decision which is best for them (Dunphy,
Winland Brown, Porter, Thomas, 2015).
Importance of Providing Cost Effective Care In a time when healthcare costs in the
United States exceeds 2.7 trillion dollars, it is never been such an imperative as it is
now, to provide cost effective healthcare. The cost of diagnostic testing alone accounts
for 10 percent of total healthcare costs. The advancement in diagnostic imaging and
laboratory testing has escalated these costs due to misuse or overuse in diagnosing
patient s aliments for fear of diagnostic errors. It is estimated that 25 billion dollars per
year, in the United States is spent on inappropriate diagnostic testing (Newman Toker,
McDonald, Meltzer, 2013). Technology advances and the demand for advanced
diagnostic testing have progressively escalated, creating a quandary on what is an
appropriate diagnostic test and what is not a diagnostically worthwhile
Ezra Pound And Modernist Poetry
The following poems share a similar theme: Ezra Pound s A Few Don ts, Wallace
Stevens Of Modern Poetry, Archibald Macleish s Ars Poetica, and Marianne Moore s
Poetry. Each of these authors felt they had discovered superlative methods to write the
most powerful poetry. However, the details and methods which each author used varied
from one another. Born in 1885, Ezra poundis known as one of Modernist poetrys biggest
contributors. His poetry of the early 20th century was unconventional and controversial
for its time. He studied endlessly to understand every facet of poetry and pave his own
way in the field. He pioneered the imagist movement and developed rubrics which
imagist poems were to follow. In A Few Don ts, Ezra Pound... Show more content on

His poetry is experimental and was influenced by the works of numerous modernist
poets. As he aged, his poems developed to be more traditional. Many of his works in
the 1930 s analyzed social and political issues that plagued the world during this
period. Ars Poetica challenges how one interprets their own reality, and his own
guidelines to powerful poetry. He uses strong, apt images to convey his points.
MacLeish believes a poem should be worldess As the flight of birds (MacLeish 789).
This poem is much more abstract than the other two, but shares the same theme of
trying to connect to the reader and illicit strong feelings. MacLeish believes that A
poem should not mean But be (MacLeish 790). A poem should speak for itself and use
strong images for the reader to ponder. This leaves the poem more open to interpretation
and discussion. Marianne Moore was born in Missouri in 1887. She was a modernist
poet; however, the subjects which she chose to write about differed from the average
modernist. Most modernist poetry during this time was centered around the state of
modern civilization. Moore chose to center her poetry around animals, nature, and poetry
itself. Her poem Poetry starts off somewhat perplexing when she states I, too, dislike it:
there are things that are important beyond all this fiddle (Moore 791). This is
demonstrating irony, because

Protecting the environment is an issue which immensely important to me, and knowing
that this university emphasizes a healthy environment furthers my interest in being a
part of its community. I know that at this university I will not feel lonely or isolated, as
I did in the past three years. During my sophomore year, my life has completely
changed: I moved from Poland to the United States. It was definitely one of the greatest
challenges during high school. New surroundings, lack of friends to confide in and
language barrier were some of the biggest problems. It was not easy to adjust at first,
but I pushed myself to get better grades and acclimate to this new way of living. I am
proud of the fact that I did not qualify to take ESL since my level of English was
already high. Unfortunately, my freshman year grades are transferred from Poland,
where the school system is different and it is exceptionally difficult to get As. Also,
my sophomore year was my first year in the US, and I did not do as good in school
and I would want to, because of the factors I have mentioned above. I know that solitude

Short Speech On Littering
Littering is one of the biggest environmental issues we face today. Littering affects us
all, from humans to animals and our surroundings. The careless act of littering from a
simple piece of plastic thrown on the ground can clog storm drains or that piece of
plastic may go straight to the ocean and harm wildlife. Littering is a health hazard which
causes harmful bacteria and germs. Removing litterfrom the environment costs everyone
money. Littering is the most important environmental issue our nation is facing
because it is done so easily and carelessly. People do not realize how much we spend
on cleaning litter every year or how it affects us all. The practice has become second
nature, we have avoided to educate ourselves on how this affects us in the long run.
Littering needs to be minimized or if possible, completely stopped if we could help it
because we are doing more harm to the earth.
Carelessness and laziness are two common factors that contribute to littering. We have a
piece of trash in our hands and a trash can is in site, yet we decide to just throw it on the
ground. Littering has become second nature even if it is unintentional. We assume that
the trash we throw will eventually disappear into thin air and it won t affect our
surroundings. Little do we know that every little piece of trash thrown out the window all
adds up. That small piece becomes a pile of trash that ends up clogging storm drains,
contaminating water and endangering wildlife. According to McWhorter, Sustainability
involves conserving resources to prevent their depletion, protecting ecological processes,
and eliminating waste and pollution, so as to ensure that our society s pratices can
continue and our civilization can endure (p. 394).
Everyday items such as bottles and plastic that are carelessly thrown on the streets
eventually end up around wildlife. Litter creates an unhealthy environment towards
wildlife that could put them in danger. A lot of the time animals end up eating the litter,
have a hard time digesting it which puts them in a fragile state where they may end up
dead. The living environment for wildlife is also affected by litter because their
surroundings become trashed. Marine wildlife such as whales,
The Gempei War Analysis
Liam Brownlie Egan F Block 3/29/2018 The Gempei War; a battle of military might,
or a political feud? Word Count: 1544 Part I: Introduction The 1180 through 1185
Gempei War between the Japanese Taira and Minamoto clans is often pointed to as an
example of the Japanese warrior ethic. The Heike Monogatari traditionally would argue
that this is true, however, the reality of the 12th century conflict paints a much different
story. Analysis of the war shows that the deciding factors of the war were not
necessarily the military strength of the Minamoto, but instead it was a brilliant and
lucky political chess game played by Minamoto Yoritomo. Yoritomo was able to develop
strategic alliances with local lords across eastern Japan and benefited from... Show more

The Imperial Court neglected the many communities and prefectures that make up Japan.
This led to many local lords taking matters into their own hands, and establishing virtually
autonomous kingdoms each fighting each other for power. When the Gempei War broke
out in 1180 Yoritomo pounced on the opportunity to gain overwhelming support. With
the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate, Yoritomo designed a system that would
allocate authority to local military leaders that would, in turn, remain loyal to the
Shogun. During the Gempei War, Yoritomo offered these positions to military lords
across eastern Japan. With this strategy, Yoritomo was able to amass a force that
outnumbered that of the Taira. This quote addresses the importance of this fact, the war
s larger significance lay in Yoritomo s rechanneling of hostility among provincial
warriors. By promising them land and jobs when he won, Yoritomo assured the loyalty
of warriors who wanted to topple their regional rivals, (Selinger,4). Had Yoritomo not
appealed to these lords, the Taira would have been able to crush his
An Essay On Houston Texas
HousВ·toВ·niВ·an, a native resident of Houston, Texas. This term is popular in more
states than Texas. There s a saying that Everything is bigger and better in Texas.
Houston is the fourth largest city in America behind Nevada and ahead of New Mexico.
Now that is big. People that are born in Texas are natives, and therefore Houstonian.
There are several races that call Houstonhome like Hispanics, Asians, Blacks and
Europeans. There is also a refugee population in Houston from places like Afghanistan,
Iraq, and Somalia. However, any person that lives in the culture and experiences the
culture to the extent that they consider themselves native can also be called a
Houstonian. Houstonian is not a term. Houstonian is a way of life, a culture, and an
identity. Technically a Houstonian is anyone native to the city of Houston, Texas
. As
vague as that may be, this surprisingly includes all kinds of nationalities and races.
Houston is melting pot city and many families are started here. As long as you have
lived in the city for a minimum time, or have been born in Houston that makes you a
Houstonian. Usually natives are born into a family of natives as well but other times it
is a generation that starts the path going forward. There is no particular face of a
Houstonian, or style of dress for that matter. A Houstonian is recognized by their comfort
in the city. Houstonians a proud of their city and often rally often at festivals and events
to celebrate that culture of a fun and
How Does Wang Lung Change In The Good Earth
Throughout The Good Earth, Wang Lung s life changes drastically, but his
hardworking nature and severe self consciousness does not change. Wang Lung s
diligence and perseverance towards his land and dream of success definitely paid off
because in the end he was able to live in comfort. While his greed for a higher social
standing did result in many bad decisions, it made Wang Lung who he is. Whether good
or bad individually, his two constant traits helped Wang Lung achieve his dream. Wang
Lung s positive trait that stayed with him was his determination and hard working nature.
These traits must have come from his time tending the land due to its tedious but
rewarding work. It s obvious that Wang Lung s positive personalities come from the land
because he learns lessons and good qualities through hard work. These qualities are
proven many times throughout the book, but some major situations include when he
didn t want his familyto steal even when they were forced to beg and live in unknown
conditions. This shows that he doesn t want them to become habitual stealers and live an

Starting as a poor farmer to a well respected and wealthy man, he remains extremely
self conscious and greedy for more recognition. While these traits fed his
determination which led to his great position in the village. His self awareness is a
recurring topic in the novel as There are many occurrences where Wang Lung is
looked down upon. An example would be when he is made fun of for being illiterate at
the grain market. In return, Wang Lung decides to take his sons out of the farm and
become educated at a school. This shows Wang Lung s determination to become
respected since being educated is a sign of higher status and wealth. Wang Lung s greed
for respect and wealth is one of the main themes of The Good Earth as his hunger for a

Racial Harmony In Remember The Titans
Remember the Titans is about racial harmony. In this movie it is unsure if they are
cheering for racism victories or victories over the opposing team. It alternates very
quickly. This movie is to show that real life is never simple to racism and this is to
teach us that we are all the same even though we have different skin color. Denzel
Washington and Will Patton are the two football coaches. One black and one white.
Even though they don t want to be teamed up together for a season. The movie takes
place in 1971 at a high school in Alexandria, Va. The school brings on Coach Boone
(Washington) as the new head coach, replacing Coach Yoast (Patton). Yoast is expected
to become his assistant. The black residents gather on Boones lawn to cheer
The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a controversial tale which follows a young white
boy and a runaway slave on their journey along the Mississippi, has spurred large debate
surrounding fundamental elements of society and has continued to entertain a wide
audience for over a century. Whether it s the humanized runaway slave, the realistic and
intelligent adolescent, the outrageous characters, or perhaps the charming vernacular,
this adventurous story is arguably the source of all modern American literature
(Hemingway 22). Mark Twain, the author of such an illustrious text, is an exalted
raconteur who utilized frank humor, satire, and regional culture and dialect to convey his
typically negative beliefs about society and morality. His... Show more content on

His sole reason for reconnecting with Huck is to obtain the $6000 of treasure that he
believed Huck owned. In order for Pap to reinforce his dominance over Huck, the two
relocate to the old log hut...where the timber was so thick you couldn t find it if you
didn t know where it is (Twain 25). The isolated and seemingly inescapable abode
symbolizes the difficulty of emerging from the exploitation and abuse of Pap s toxic
tendencies. Pap s perpetual struggle to remain superior to Huck caused him to abuse
Huck both physically and mentally. When Pap is formally introduced, Huck says that I
used to be so scared of him all the time, he [beat] me so much (Twain 20) clearly a sign
of physical abuse. Pap also demeans Huck by making everything Huck does about him:
You re educated, too, they say...You think you re better n your father, now, don t you,
because he can t? (Twain 21). One tactic used by many abusers is centering the actions of
the person being abused in order to make them feel guilty for trying to better themselves
and assert dominance in the relationship which Pap clearly does against Huck although
Huck s formal education likely had little to do with aggravating his father. Through Pap s
abusive and rapacious mannerisms, Twain illuminates the corruption of seeking social
dominance for no reason other than superiority and connote it with abuse. Unfortunately
for Huck, the materialism and self centered personalities of those around him continue to

Breastfeeding In Public
First off let me start off by saying breastfeeding is something I am deeply
compassionate about. I have 3 kids who all were breast fed. The ability you have to
feed your baby with your body is an amazing thing it s something I support whole
heartily. Whenever I see a mom breastfeeding in public I always make sure to give her
the Mom nod and smile, to sorta tell her she s doing awesome, and to keep it up. It
takes encouragement to breastfeed and especially in public. Now I am not particular on
how a woman nurses her baby in public. Covered or not, it really doesn t matter to me
as long as they are breastfeedingtheir baby.
The issue, is obviously about normal behavior in a public setting. Part of the main issue
is who defines normal and

An Effective Quality Improvement Tool
Robust parameter design (RPD), an effective quality improvement tool, minimizes the
performance variability and bias of a product or a process in which the experimental
design space is subject to physical restrictions and constraints. For a number of practical
situations, optimal design criteria may allow best experimental design schemes to be
generated based on the decision maker s choices and the use of optimal designcriteria to
RPD problems may overcome the limitations of standard experimental designs in finding
optimal operating conditions for both quantitative and qualitative input variables.
The field of optimal designs has been in the literature for many years. Smith (1918) firstly
studied optimal designs for prediction purposes. Wald (1943) then introduced a measure
of the efficiency of the design by investigating the quality of parameter estimates. In
addition, Wald (1943) first offered the criterion of D optimality, which is the notion of
maximizing the determinant of the information matrix. Later, Kiefer and Wolfowitz
(1959) developed computational procedures for finding optimal designs, such as D
optimality and E optimality, in regression problems of estimation, testing hypotheses, and
so on. Similarly, Kiefer (1959) studied certain fundamental assumptions, such as the non
optimality of the balanced designs for hypothesis testing, and certain specific optimality
criteria in the spirit of Wald s decision theory. Next, Kiefer (1961) extended the results of

Romanticism In Romantic Poetry
Romantic Poetry Paper
As many of us know, the Romanticism period happen during the 1800 s hundreds and
finished in the mid 1850 s. This movement is an artistic enlightenment that happen
throughout Europe. The people who took an active big role during this movement is
John Keats, Percy Shelley, William Wordsworth and many more. Numerous of their
poteries talks about nature, beauty, love, death etc. However, the major poems that really
stood out to me from these three substantial poets is; She Dwelt Among the Untrodden
Ways by William Wordsworth that signifies the beauties of imagination and death. Then,
ON THE GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKET by John Keats who elaborates the happiness
of nature. Finally, Mutability by Percy Shelley that symbolises the bodies and spirits.
Therefore, these poems are very meaningful and may apply to your everyday life.
To begin with, She Dwelt Among the Untrodden Ways is about a young lady being
admired comparing her beauty to nature. William Wordsworth says She dwelt among
the untrodden ways Beside the springs of Dove, . Wordsworth is trying to describe
how gentle and innocent she is like nature is. Also Wordsworth adds A violet by a
mossy stone Half hidden from the eye! this quote I believe show people tend to not
notice her that much but in his eyes she is still very beautiful. Later on in his poetry the
young lady is identified as Lucy who may possibly be apart of his imagination that soon
dies in the end. Wordsworth states She

  • 2. My Earliest Memory My earliest memory is from the one day when my ordinary life had collapsed. Out of all of our memory, majority of people would remember their most peaceful memory from their childhood. I may have probably be one of them, if I did not experienced such a horrifying moment as a age of four. I remember each part of the scene vividly and it is probably the memory that had a strongest impact on me for the rest of my life. My earliest memory was when I was four years old in my small apartment in Maryland. It was an ordinary day until I saw my parents taken somewhere far away that I had no clue of. The day started off normally, I woke up at my bed feeling the bright warm sunlight on my face. As I get off of my bed and looked out of the window,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I spent my day peacefully in school learning new information and just talking with my friends. After school, I was walking back to my home alone. I remember the neighbour family in the morning, I picked up some dandelions from the roadside to show my family. I took it back carefully as possible as I can back home so the white fluff on the dandelion wouldn t blow away. When I finally arrived in front of my house, I saw my mother sitting in front of the entrance door with her face down on to her knee. When she looked up and found me in front of her, her face looked nothing like what I used to recognize her or what I would except a mother to look like in front of her child. She looked terribly tired and frightened as if she was chased by a murderer. Then, she demanded me to open the door grabbing my shoulders hardly. For a moment, I couldn t move nor say anything. I was frightened of how she looked at me, I abandoned the option of saying no to her and so I did what she asked. I knocked on the door as usually I would and shouted at the door Dad, I m back home! . Then the door opened slowly, at a glance I saw some pieces of glass and knife on the floor and my father with his face completely red. I was confused of what was happening at the room. Then my mother broke into the house and slammed the door hard. The door was closed again in front of
  • 3. Baseball Protypes It s fantasy baseball playoff time, and if you made all the right moves during the regular season, you re battling for your league title. Now is not the time to be timid. Holding on tightly to veteran pitchers may seem like a good strategy, but it can backfire. When you follow rosters, keeping up with the MLB lineups using information from sites such as FantasyAlarm.com, you know there are young pitchers making their way to the big show. Some of these pitchers clearly realize this may be their one and only chance to shine. First, you need to appreciate a couple reasons why these young pitchers have a chance to do really well. Then you calculate which ones have the highest chance of catapulting you to your league championship. When... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... В·Carson Fulmer The White Sox have three strong prospects for their future. They are going to play out the string in 2017 looking at which of these pitchers steps forward. Fulmer is one of the more intriguing of this trio of pitching prospects. Much of his minor league difficulties have centered on control issues. Too many free passes have lead to a balloon in his ERA. At times, he has used his mid 90s fastball to mow down hitters, while at other times he can t seem to locate with consistency. Fulmer had tossed 6 innings with only three Ks out of the bullpen since his call up, but nailed 9 San Francisco hitters in his first start. He has his future in front of him, and his 3 hit, 1 run performance in his first start turned the heads of the White Sox brass. Look for Fulmer to pitch his final opportunities with a sense of purpose. В·Lucas Giolito Giolito s fantasy numbers in his first four starts have accounted for two masterful performances, sandwiched in the middle of two defensive collapses by his fielders. He allowed 1 earned run, scattering only a half dozen hits over 14 innings in two victories. He maintained his 1K/inning rate in those two wins. In his other two starts, the White Sox defense fell apart. It led to a momentary loss of concentration against San Francisco, leading to 4 walks. Giolito still gave up only three hits in 5 plus innings of work, so the potential is obviously there. Giolito may have the
  • 4. Importance Of Medical Ethics And Its Development... Importance of Medical Ethics and its Development throughout History For thousands of years medicine has been executed by competent and well trained licensed individuals dating back to the 5th century BCE where the Hippocratic Oath was taken by physicians. The Hippocratic Oath (Modern) reads, I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant: I will respect the hard won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow. I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism. I will remember that there is art to medicineas well as science, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These ethics have not only kept good order and discipline but they have also allowed world renowned physicians such as Dr. Achibald McIndoe, Dr.Vivien T. Thomas, Dr.James Blundell, Dr.Joseph Lister, Dr. Edward Jenner, and others to push the envelope allowing groundbreaking development and overall better medicine that we practice today in modern civilization. Personal prejudice has no place in a doctor s life. For example, he should treat his patient suffering from alcoholic cirrhosis, or from chronic bronchitis, even though it is the patient s habit for consuming alcohol or smoking. The doctor cannot be ethical by refusing treatment to his patient; on the contrary the doctor should treat him with sympathy. If the physician withholds his service it is considered as shedding blood. In clinical practice, patient s best interests are safe guarded by his physician s duty to choose tests and treatments that seem best for the individual s need. To safeguard patients, investigators, institutions, and the public, various research related practices and regulations have been developed. These codes help us understand and work more effectively in the ethically interesting domain of clinical investigations conducted in human subjects. Seven essential requirements of ethical
  • 5. The Mutual Impact Between Amsterdam And The Voc The Mutual Impact Between Amsterdam and the VOC The Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or The Dutch East India Company, was the first multinational corporation in history (Shorto 103). In the interest of conserving space, the Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie will be shortened to the VOC in this paper. Founded in 1602, the VOC was primarily a trading company, but also had the power to declare wars, create colonies, and negotiate treaties (Briney). The VOC s massive reach across the globe and its ability to transport large quantities of goods caused entire populations to rely on foreign tradeto survive (Shorto 104). Even Japan, who had a general policy of refusing foreign trade, allowed the VOC to trade with them for two centuries... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Early Amsterdammers were at war with water because the settlers needed to drain the marshy terrain to obtain land suitable for building and farming. The owner of any given parcel of land was responsible for seeing that the dykes that held back the water were maintained and keeping their land dry. If one neglected their duties, water would sweep in and cause destruction to not only the negligent party s land, but everyone s (Mak 11). Flooding caused destruction of property and crops and essentially lowered chances of survival. Because it was vital to cooperate with others, despite potential differences and disagreements, the Dutch developed a pragmatic and collaborative outlook. Draining water to create land also affected the area s geography. To remove the water, it had to be directed into canals that ran directly into the ocean or natural rivers (Mak 11). These canals proved to be an advantage, as traders could easily anchor and load boats directly where their homes or stores were. Although this made loading goods easier, traders first had to take convoluted routes through twisting rivers to sell their wares because their boats were unfit for the open sea. Then, with the invention of a ship called a cog, trading routes could now stretch across seas. The cogs themselves could also carry five to ten times more cargo than earlier boats. Because Dutch traders could go to farther ports to trade, their cities, namely Amsterdam, became
  • 6. Art Teacher Disadvantages Recommendation After carefully evaluating three possible solutions that were presented in the previous section on implementing arts integration into the classroom, this paper will recommend the solution be, hiring an art teacher. As stated before, hiring additional teachers, for most tend to be very helpful. It can relieve stress and any additional preparation that comes with arts integration. The teacher would be able to divide the work load with the hired art teacher. Limitations of Analysis There are two significant limitations within the research that are important to address. While doing research on arts integration the amount of empirical evidence was lacking in regard to hiring an art teacher. There have not been enough studies done yet on the time and the cost it takes to hire an arts teacher for each school. The information that was provided in the previous section was also lacking important data about how much a school spends on hiring a new teacher. Another limitation would the lack of testimonies from the students, making sure if hiring an art teacher is beneficial for them. Concessions In making this recommendation there are two concessions that need to be considered: one being increasing art supplies and the other being professional development. Both these options offer different alternatives for integrating arts into the classroom. Increase supplies takes little to no time to order, therefore it would be the fastest option it order to make sure students
  • 7. Can India Sustain Its Present Economic Growth Rate Can India sustain its present economic growth rate? India is an emerging economy that is witnessing unprecedented levels of economic expansion. It is widely expected that India may overtake China as the world s fastest growing major economy by 2015. However it is not easy to sustain high levels of economic growth rates. There were a number of countries that experienced a high economic growth rate but were unable to sustain it for a long period of time. In order to determine whether India can sustain its economic growth rate we need to study the various factors that create an impact on India s economy. • 8. Social Darwinism In Frank Norris Mcteague Social Darwinism is the Survival of the Fittest so in other words, the strongest and fittest survive and flourish in society, while the weak should be allowed to die. This theory is the basis for Frank Norris s novel McTeague. Norris believed that whatever social class you were born in, that should be the social class that you stay in. In Frank Norris McTeague, couples Zerkow and Maria, and Trina and McTeague exemplify the concept of Social Darwinism as seen through the rise and the downfall of their lives. Regardless of their European descent, McTeague and Trina s economic status changed too quickly which led them to their downfall. When Trina wins five thousand dollars playing the lottery, McTeague immediately moves up the social ladder.
  • 9. Essay Comparing Grey s Anatomy And Empire While hit TV series Grey s Anatomy and Empire are both extremely popular, they differ greatly in the language used. In order to complete this project, I took linguistic concepts I had learned about in the text such as grammar, context, and communicative competence and applied them to the language usage in these TV series. A lot can be assumed about different characters based solely on their speech. Take for instance two of the main characters in Grey s Anatomy, Meredith and Derek. Simply by listening to their proper grammar, it is noticeable that they have received a formal education and are quite intelligent. We would most likely assume that they grew up in a middle class home with working parents who could afford their education. Compare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is not a wide variety in speech in each show. Grey s Anatomy is typically more formal and professional while Empire is slightly less formal. The characters mentioned so far have been couples or former couples. Because of this, they speak differently with each other than they do with other characters in the show. A strong use of communicative practices is apparent for all characters. For example, Meredith and Derek from Grey s Anatomy are married. They have more casual conversation with one another compared to Meredith and her boss, Richard. Lucious and Cookie are a former couple. They may have a more personal relationship but there is obvious tension between them. Each character has a different discourse genre. While I have not watched every episode of these two television programs, from what I have observed, code switching has not occurred. While there is a wide variety in regards to the ethnicity of different characters, none of them are multilingual. However, it is possible that code switching could occur in future episodes. For example, in Grey s Anatomy they get many different types of patients. It is very likely that one of those patients may speak two languages and switch in times of stress. The same is true of Empire. The clientele dealt with in Empire ranges and there is a strong possibility one of those characters could practice code

Throughout the book many characters come and go in the garden, and each character shares something in common with someone else. The garden brings people together, and helps them communicate with one another, without the garden, some people might never have communicated with someone that has a different appearance as them. The novel Seedfolks shows us, that the garden changed everyone s perspectives on people in their community and how they judge them by appearance. It shows how you can give someone chances, before you can judge them. Some people that show this theme, are Kim, Ana, Sae Young, Maricela, Sam, and Curtis. Kim is the one who started the garden, and her father died before she was even born. • 12. Socratic Method Of Teaching And Study Philosophy 1. Explain some of the benefits a student may gain by studying philosophy. Some of the benefits a student gains by studying philosophy is having the ability to gain knowledge and think more clearly. You learn skills, seek wisdom and get an understanding of our world through various branches. Helps us appreciate where the world came from, where we came from. Using our critical thinking we evaluate information and reach a conclusion due to the analyzation. We learn ethics, what is real, how others see things. We gain cognitive, moral and spiritual development by studying philosophy. 2. Explain the Socratic Method of Teaching. Is this a useful way for students to learn? Socratic Method is a way of thinking that involves three steps, first step is you give an initial definition, second step you find exceptions to that definition and you present them in a form of question. Then the third step you give a better definition of the concept. Repeat all these steps until you discover the essence of the concept. Socratic method has its pros and cons not every student learns the same way it might be a good method for one student or might be easier for one but not for the other. Everyone is unique and different. 3. Explain how critical thinking can be used to analyze a philosophical issue. Critical thinking is about making sure that you have good reasons for your beliefs. Critical thinking is used by reasoning and examining the information given to her person to analyze a

It was the day of the wedding, Claudio and Hero to be married off in mere minutes. A playful jab was shared between Beatrice and Benedick, words flying out faster than arrows. Leonato stood, using a dainty teaspoon to draw attention to himself, the light chatter fading to a dead silence. Nobody dared talk when the master of the household did. It is time, He proclaimed simply, hauling up both his daughter and her soon to be. Claudio s face was plastered with a dashing smile, but if one looked close enough; long enough; hard enough; they would see the flames behind his eyes, the anger sheathed until the moment was right. She moved quickly, silently, grasping Hero under her arms, finding her cousin out cold. Looking about, she found what she was looking for, and dragged her to a long forgotten hatch, hiding her in the elderly wine cellar, now swathed in cobwebs. Leonato began bellowing once more, Claudio joining him, speaking of broken honours and betrayed trusts. • 14. Blood Spurts From The Female Vampire s Chest Blood spurts from the female vampire s chest, as her human lover drives the stake further and further into her heart. The scene where Lucy is killed can be interpreted in different ways due to the varying interpretations of blood. One way to interpret blood and vampirism in Bram Stoker s Dracula is through the psychoanalytical critical lens. In this interpretation, blood symbolizes sexual fluid and vampires are a metaphor for eroticism. The novel was written in Victorian England, which had strict morals regarding female sexuality. In an article, Jesse Battan describes ideals from this time period as insist[ing] that women s erotic impulses were shaped by maternal instincts and a social conscience . Victorian society trained women not to act upon their desires and instead to repress their sexuality. Lucy Westerna, a main female character in the novel, has a sleepwalking habit that reveals her subconscious desires. However, as the novel progresses, her desires are no longer merely subconscious because her sexuality is expressed through her vampirism. This prompts the hunters to try and remedy this issue by murdering her. Bram Stoker conveys that Lucy defies Victorian England standards due to the progression of her character from the typical nineteenth century maiden into a sensual creature. At the beginning of the novel, Lucy follows society s standards by suppressing her sexuality and only revealing her repressed desires through her sleepwalking. After discovering Lucy

The second mapping method I had used was the proportional point symbol to indicate the scale and size with simple symbols proportionally to the data value found at that location. Large circles represent a higher density of population (urban areas) and smaller scale is a smaller density of population (rural areas). I had use the Miller cylindrical map projection for my two variable thematic map for the following reason; first being the map is due to the accuracy and clearly defined of local shapes. We are displaying geographic data and it is important to have a projection that does not distort the area to effectively map the data. Secondly the map avoids scale exaggeration, which is also important when mapping geographic data within regions. One manipulation I had made to my map to improve the communicative effectiveness of my map, was to only emphasize the borders of France to clearly define the geographic area where the data is applicable. Advantages to using ArcGIS to map this data was that it provides a great simplistic map to communicate the data to spatial regions, and the program

Who Is The Antagonist In Room By Emma Donoghue The novel Room by Emma Donoghue is loosely based on the Josef Fritzl case; in which a man held his daughter captive, repeatedly raped her, beat her and fathered 8 children with her over a period of 24 years. Room focuses on the love that Ma and Jack share in their tragic situation, rather than Old Nick the psychopath who committed the heinous crime. Jack is not represented as a victim due to the fact he is oblivious to his situation as it is the only reality he s ever known. The first half of the novel focuses on Ma and Jack being trapped in the room, while the second half focuses on what happens when they escaped. Ma and Jack are the two main characters who live in the room. Old Nick is the person who is holding Ma and Jack captive. There are also family and nurses who help Ma and Jack after they have escaped. Jack is further not represented as a victim because Ma protects him from the actions of Old Nick and normalises the situation for him. Donoghue uses homodiegetic narration with Jack. However, Jack is an inadequate narrator as he doesn t understand a great deal of the things that are happening around him; due to his age and his mother shielding him from the realities of his surroundings. For example, Ma takes her pill from the sliver pack that has 28 little spaceships, as a reader we are aware this refers to the contraceptive pill, however, Jack isn t. Ma and Jack are not portrayed as victims in this novel as even though they are trapped in this horrible

My eyes searched carefully from the door of one bedroom to that of another for my name which ought to have been pasted on the door of one of these bedrooms. At last I found it. On stepping into the bedroom I found there was already a student who was making her bed, She was thin, short and black skinned. Her hair looked like a bundle of straw. Her dirty clothes and lusterless eyes clearly indicated that she had a long journey. Her clothes were made of cheap cloth. Her coat was too short, and the legs of her trousers were too loose. She wore a pair of unfashionable rubber shoes. And all her looks made me feel that she did not look like a smart girl. A yokel, I concluded. The second she spoke, her accent told me that she was from the south. May I help you get your luggage from the office?
I did not decline her help because I really needed it. She was quick in movement. She walked out of the room and was soon far ahead of me in the corridor. A nice girl, I said to myself. I will make friends with her. I hurried and caught up with her. • 21. Positive Effects Of Confucianism In China When considering the vast multitude of religions or schools of thought with dedicated followings, it would be hard to ignore Confucianism. It has single handedly made the greatest impact on Chinese society overall, an impact that persists to this day. It is as a whole, a political ideology, a moral and ethical guide but most importantly a religion. The sentiment argued by many is that it does not share enough characteristics of other Western religions to be considered one as well. Although Confucianismas a whole is rooted in ethical and moral teachings, it also speaks of rituals and ancestor worship, thus allowing it to be considered, by Western standards, a religion. Confucianism, like many popular religions in modern day China, was established during the Warring States period. It was created as a way of making sense of the chaos of the world and the unruliness of the leaders and citizens. China, as a nation, did not become unified until 221 B.C.E when the Qin dynasty came into fruition as a powerful imperial government. Also, in the Ch ing Ming or Ancestor Day, which is a popular Confucian holiday, many visit family graves and provide offerings for their ancestors. The worship of a higher, or perhaps spiritual being is evident in almost all major religions, especially Western religions. Christianity, for example, is based almost solely on the worshiping of an individual
  • 22. Human Rights Act of 1998 The aim of this essay is to critically evaluate the statement The European Convention on Human Rights exists to guarantee legal protection to fundamental rights . It will examine how rights are protected in law and the way the UK approaches the protection of these rights. Explanation will be made of the way that the UK addresses the implementation of the rights in the English legal system. Issues such as conflicting rights and legal limitations will also be considered. An evaluation will be made of whether or not The Human RightsAct 1998 protects the fundamental rights of UK citizens as contained in the European Convention on Human Rights. Before the Human Rights Act 1998 was passed by parliament it had been considered unnecessary to incorporate the Convention directly into UK law as it was thought that the UK already provided adequate protection for its citizens. However, a number of infringements were identified and this eventually led to the start of the legislative process which resulted in the Human Rights Act 1998. Arguments that were put forward for the incorporation of The European Convention on Human Rights into UK law were partly based on the costs and time considerations involved in taking cases before the European Court in Strasbourg. The Human Rights Act 1998 gave the citizens of the United Kingdom the right to bring proceedings for the infringement of these rights before the UK courts. Other lines of reasoning concluded that the incorporation would

  • 24. Absurdity And Society Philosophy Research paper Extra credit Absurdity and Society According to Camus s philosophy of absurdity, a person is truly happy when he or she accepts that life is meaningless. For example, there is no fate, or anything past immediate experience. The hope of something better in the future is what keeps people happy, which raises a question; are people truly happy? If a person cannot be happy without finding meaning, then people must accept existence has no meaning beyond what each individual makes of it, and by accepting a meaningless fate; people can be truly aware and therefore happy. Religion is another form of hope. It is something to look forward to, beyond unpleasant worldly experiences. The majority of society in the world have a religion of some sort in order to create contentment and to disguise what Camus believes the world to be, an abyss of meaninglessness. Therefore, it is significant to consider: without religion, if life was truly meaningless, would it still be important to perform good deeds. It is also noteworthy for people to consider, if life has no meaning, is it still important to love, marry, look for adventure or opportunity? Camus s perception of absurdity can raise many questions that could transform the structure of modern society entirely. Firstly, it is practical to question if an absurdist would fit into modern society at all. To this inquiry, Camus answers that it is not so likely in his book The Stranger. In this book, the main character

  • 29. Short Speech On Littering Littering is one of the biggest environmental issues we face today. Littering affects us all, from humans to animals and our surroundings. The careless act of littering from a simple piece of plastic thrown on the ground can clog storm drains or that piece of plastic may go straight to the ocean and harm wildlife. Littering is a health hazard which causes harmful bacteria and germs. Removing litterfrom the environment costs everyone money. Littering is the most important environmental issue our nation is facing because it is done so easily and carelessly. People do not realize how much we spend on cleaning litter every year or how it affects us all. The practice has become second nature, we have avoided to educate ourselves on how this affects us in the long run. Littering needs to be minimized or if possible, completely stopped if we could help it because we are doing more harm to the earth. Carelessness and laziness are two common factors that contribute to littering. We have a piece of trash in our hands and a trash can is in site, yet we decide to just throw it on the ground. Littering has become second nature even if it is unintentional. We assume that the trash we throw will eventually disappear into thin air and it won t affect our surroundings. Little do we know that every little piece of trash thrown out the window all adds up. That small piece becomes a pile of trash that ends up clogging storm drains, contaminating water and endangering wildlife. According to McWhorter, Sustainability involves conserving resources to prevent their depletion, protecting ecological processes, and eliminating waste and pollution, so as to ensure that our society s pratices can continue and our civilization can endure (p. 394). Everyday items such as bottles and plastic that are carelessly thrown on the streets eventually end up around wildlife. Litter creates an unhealthy environment towards wildlife that could put them in danger. A lot of the time animals end up eating the litter, have a hard time digesting it which puts them in a fragile state where they may end up dead. The living environment for wildlife is also affected by litter because their surroundings become trashed. Marine wildlife such as whales,

Word Count: 1544 Part I: Introduction The 1180 through 1185 Gempei War between the Japanese Taira and Minamoto clans is often pointed to as an example of the Japanese warrior ethic. The Heike Monogatari traditionally would argue that this is true, however, the reality of the 12th century conflict paints a much different story. The Imperial Court neglected the many communities and prefectures that make up Japan. This led to many local lords taking matters into their own hands, and establishing virtually autonomous kingdoms each fighting each other for power. When the Gempei War broke out in 1180 Yoritomo pounced on the opportunity to gain overwhelming support. With the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate, Yoritomo designed a system that would allocate authority to local military leaders that would, in turn, remain loyal to the Shogun. During the Gempei War, Yoritomo offered these positions to military lords across eastern Japan. With this strategy, Yoritomo was able to amass a force that outnumbered that of the Taira. This quote addresses the importance of this fact, the war s larger significance lay in Yoritomo s rechanneling of hostility among provincial warriors. By promising them land and jobs when he won, Yoritomo assured the loyalty of warriors who wanted to topple their regional rivals, (Selinger,4). Had Yoritomo not appealed to these lords, the Taira would have been able to crush his

The isolated and seemingly inescapable abode symbolizes the difficulty of emerging from the exploitation and abuse of Pap s toxic tendencies. Pap s perpetual struggle to remain superior to Huck caused him to abuse Huck both physically and mentally. When Pap is formally introduced, Huck says that I used to be so scared of him all the time, he [beat] me so much (Twain 20) clearly a sign of physical abuse. Pap also demeans Huck by making everything Huck does about him: You re educated, too, they say...You think you re better n your father, now, don t you, because he can t? (Twain 21). One tactic used by many abusers is centering the actions of the person being abused in order to make them feel guilty for trying to better themselves and assert dominance in the relationship which Pap clearly does against Huck although Huck s formal education likely had little to do with aggravating his father. Through Pap s abusive and rapacious mannerisms, Twain illuminates the corruption of seeking social dominance for no reason other than superiority and connote it with abuse. An Effective Quality Improvement Tool Robust parameter design (RPD), an effective quality improvement tool, minimizes the performance variability and bias of a product or a process in which the experimental design space is subject to physical restrictions and constraints. For a number of practical situations, optimal design criteria may allow best experimental design schemes to be generated based on the decision maker s choices and the use of optimal designcriteria to RPD problems may overcome the limitations of standard experimental designs in finding optimal operating conditions for both quantitative and qualitative input variables. The field of optimal designs has been in the literature for many years. Smith (1918) firstly studied optimal designs for prediction purposes. Wald (1943) then introduced a measure of the efficiency of the design by investigating the quality of parameter estimates. In addition, Wald (1943) first offered the criterion of D optimality, which is the notion of maximizing the determinant of the information matrix. Later, Kiefer and Wolfowitz (1959) developed computational procedures for finding optimal designs, such as D optimality and E optimality, in regression problems of estimation, testing hypotheses, and so on. Similarly, Kiefer (1959) studied certain fundamental assumptions, such as the non optimality of the balanced designs for hypothesis testing, and certain specific optimality criteria in the spirit of Wald s decision theory. Next, Kiefer (1961) extended the results of the

This movement is an artistic enlightenment that happen throughout Europe. The people who took an active big role during this movement is John Keats, Percy Shelley, William Wordsworth and many more. Numerous of their poteries talks about nature, beauty, love, death etc. However, the major poems that really stood out to me from these three substantial poets is; She Dwelt Among the Untrodden Ways by William Wordsworth that signifies the beauties of imagination and death. Then, ON THE GRASSHOPPER AND CRICKET by John Keats who elaborates the happiness of nature. Finally, Mutability by Percy Shelley that symbolises the bodies and spirits. Therefore, these poems are very meaningful and may apply to your everyday life. To begin with, She Dwelt Among the Untrodden Ways is about a young lady being admired comparing her beauty to nature. William Wordsworth says She dwelt among the untrodden ways Beside the springs of Dove, . Wordsworth is trying to describe how gentle and innocent she is like nature is.
