John Stuart Mill Harm Principle
The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized
community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others [14]. In John Stuart Mill s On Liberty, his
harm principle addresses interference in other people s actions. He contends that the exercise of power
over others is only justified when preventing harm. It is important to keep in mind that some harm is
acceptable, but an action that infringes on another s interests should be prevented and punished.
In accordance with Mill s description of his harm principle, the statement that protecting liberty
through this principle prioritizes the development of individuality over social progress is somewhat
valid. It is only somewhat valid because Mill prioritizes the self development of the individual in order
to help society progress rather than instead of the progression of society. He believes that freedom is
designed to protect individualism and that in a state of nature there would be no social contract
because of the concept of social good. This concept conveys that because people receive protection
from society then they owe a specific behavior in return.
Mill justifies the conservation of originality with the object of personal wellbeing and societal good.
His justification reveals the way that, in preventing harm, he prioritizes the preservation of the
individual to better the progression of society.
Mill stresses the importance of originality when he proposes

The Effects Of Stress On Captive Zoo Animals
Introduction.
The effects of stress on captive zoo animals has been a major concern among zoologists as well as
zookeepers in recent years (Fernandez et al.2009). In previous studies, one of the major factors
inducing stress in captive animals that appears to have been overlooked, are the noise levels created by
the presence of zoo visitors and the effectiveness of the design of indoor zoo exhibits in reducing the
noise levels in particular. While research exists showing that the presence of zoo visitors can be a
source of enrichment for captive animals, particularly those who are social by nature, further
investigations have indicated that visitor presence can in fact be a source of stress in non social species
including felids (Hosey 2000). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This study will look at the effectiveness of the exhibit design in preventing noise pollution caused by
the increased number of visitors to the Milwaukee County Zoo jaguar exhibit. The exhibit which
contains both an indoor portion which is designed to resemble the jaguar s native jungle habitat as
well as an outdoor portion, currently houses three adult jaguars, Pat, Stella, and Francisco. Both Pat,
who is 16 years old and formally a Problem jaguar from Belize, and Stella who came to the
Milwaukee County Zoo in 2005, live together as a breeding pair (K. Kuhn in conversation). Francisco
is the 2 year old son of Pat and Stella and lives alone (K. Kuhn in conversation). Over the course of
six weeks, I will be collecting data using Wensen WS1361C decibel meters which are equipped with
data loggers. The decibel meters will be used both inside and outside the jaguar exhibit to determine
the effectiveness of the exhibit design. To analyze the zoo visitor effect, as well as the frequency of
stress related behavioral responses observed, data will be collected during on three different days of
the week both through observation of the jaguars as well as later analysis of the data recorded by the
decibel meters. Data will be collected both on days where zoo visitation is predicted to increase,
which are designated as Family Free Days, where visitors receive free admission as well as Non
Family Free days and Thursday afternoons where a decrease in zoo visitation is predicted for
observation time totaling a minimum of 15 hours. The recorded data will then be analyzed to
determine if the increased noise pollution created by an increase in zoo visitors will correlate with an
increase in stress related behavioral responses by the jaguars.

Mass Over Mass Media By Steven Pinker
The article Mass Over Mass Media is written by Steven Pinker. Pinker is a professor in Psychology at
Harvard University who focusses on visual cognation and psychology in language. He is well known
for The Language Instinct How the Mind Works. He was also listed as one of the most influential
people out of 100 in the world. Also, he is known for his ongoing debate over how the internet has
affected our world. Furthermore, author Steven Pinker, states his thesis in a peculiar way by stating
that people often react in a rash way and make negative assumptions when it comes to inventions and
their impacts. All forms of media have the power to draw a person in but that person must control
themselves by using the information without abusing it. Consequently, social media and the internet
have had a major impact on our daily lives from the way we work to the way we learn and socialize.

media and how they affect our brains. He makes a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout history and evolution of mankind, there have been many discoveries and they have
advanced our lives in a way we could never have phantom. Pinker backs up his thesis by providing
logical evidence from a variety of sources. He points out that crime rates dropped when people
thought comic books would cause the opposite; IQ s went up when television, transistor radios and
rock videos were supposed to cause the opposite; electronic media was supposed to poison our minds,
however, discoveries are on the rise at a rate no one can keep up to. Social media is a power horse that

Symbolism within in A Worn Path
Symbolism is a literary device that uses objects or events that hides the even greater idea beyond what
the text it gives you. For example, the bald eagle may seem like a fascinating bird, but to the eyes of
an American the bald eagle represents freedom. Symbolism can be found throughout our everyday
lives. Shoes have logos that are used to show what brand of shoes ones self is wearing, also money
may seem like just paper, but it can also represent power.
In the short story, A Worn Path, the main character Phoenix Jackson ventures through the forest to get
to her main destination Natchez. Phoenix Jackson is an old, little woman that is blind and needs to be
carrying a cane due to her almost complete blindness. Phoenix Jackson travels through the dangerous
forest alone. On her venture she meets many obstacles such as a crossing a river by walking over a log
that lay across it. During her advances she often drifts into a daydream and dreams about events
happening, but it turns out to be her mind playing games on her. While on her way to Natchez she
encounters a white hunter, the hunter shows no respect for her by calling her granny and even pointing
a gun at old Phoenix herself. During Phoenix s time of living segregation was still prevalent because
in the short story Phoenix makes her way in Natchez and the Anglo Americans call her names such as:
Granny, Grandma, and Old Timer. After making it through the city, Phoenix enters a building that
supplies aid to colored people and

Signs and Symbols Art Essay
Signs and symbols are the foundation of visual language, just as the alphabet is the foundation of
written language. Examine this statement with reference to a range of artists and artworks. Even
before a young child can read or write they learn the alphabet as the beginning of interpreting the
process of reading and writing. Equally a small child can generally recognise popular signs and
symbols, such as the M for McDonalds or the Coke symbol before they can read. Just as society
associates signs and symbols with various meanings, artists convey their thinking, beliefs and feelings
to the audience through their works. This can be described as visual language or how images are used
to communicate messages. This communication is vital to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whiteley s works parallels Van Gogh s in its deliberate use of symbols in his paintings and while
Whiteley observed many of the principles of Symbolism, his had its own unique facility of Surrealist
attached. This can be appreciated in Night Café (1972) [refer Appendix 3] where Whiteley depicted
Van Gogh s The Night Café (1888) [refer Appendix 1] and distorted the image and took the lines of
the room to a vanishing point, idealising Whiteley s Surrealist style. Whiteley s use of symbolism in
his works is outstandingly illustrated in Whiteley s Archibald Prize winning self portrait Art, Life and
the Other Thing (1978) [refer Appendix 4] where Whiteley demonstrates the controversy of the
Archibald in his representation of the William Dobell s controversial winning portrait of Joshua Smith
(1943) [refer Appendix 5] and John Bloomfield s disqualification from the Archibald 1975 because of
his portrait that was deemed to be painted from a picture of Tim Burstall. Whiteley represents these
two controversies in his triptych self portrait containing a photograph of how he looks in real life, a
mixed media self portrait, and a depiction of a baboon symbolising the metaphorical monkey on his
back . Whitely once said the fundamental reason one paints is in order to see , describing how he
thinks that his art is a method granting means of communication to his audience. Van Gogh was
always in the search of art and how it was to be created, he once said the positive

Active Learner
Upon taken the study skills quiz my first score first was active. I was a reflective learner, which prefer
to think about it quietly at first versus being an active learner. I am not an active learner. An active
learner tends to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it. If a student
was an active learner in my classroom I would use the phrase, Let s try it out, move around, and
visually do it to see how it works. It tells the student that I am willing to be active instead of sitting
down all the time. By being active it keeps the student moving and focused on the activity. (Scruggs,
2017) With an active learner, I would also try to do group work more often so that each member can
talk and be personable with each other. (Soloman, n.d.) By doing activities in group work will also

Sensing learners like learning facts which I sometimes enjoy, because information is easier to
remember when connected to the real world. Versus intuitive learners often prefer discovering
possibilities and relationships, which I do not enjoy as much. If I had a student that was an intuitive
learner I would try to link information to hard facts and help a student pay attention to the details and
have patience while learning. An intuitive learner also can be kind of scatter brained, so when
presenting the intuitive student with a question, I would give them an empty piece of paper to
brainstorm on. (Felder, n.d.) By letting them brain storm it gives them a moment to organize their
thoughts and helps me as a teacher understand where their learning style is going towards. Intuitive
learners also like to use the trial and error approach, which I would allow my student to do. If they had
a thought or an idea and wanted to pursue it I would allow them to and either have myself or another
student follow along with them to ensure that they are correctly doing their

Skin Whitening Stereotypes
1. In contrast to stereotypes that skin whitening is purely cosmetic, dermatologists actually prescribe
exfoliants to their patients for skin diseases.
In general, most people feel more confident with clear skin, even. For many, the battle with skin
disease can be a real obstacle that needs to be overcome to achieve this goal. That is why
dermatologists prescribe skin lightening medications to treat common ailments that lead to unevenness
or discoloration. Dr. Kassim explains, One of the most common reasons for patients to be prescribed
exfoliates is that treatment of postmenopausal phenomena can occur to anyone.
Spots that appear due to skin or inflammatory attacks such as acne may be blurred by using drugs for
affected areas. Melasma, the appearance of stains discolored on the face, usually Triggered by
hormonal changes during pregnancy and by sun exposure, also reacts well to skin exfoliation. In many
other cases, lightening the skin can even help reduce the sight of age spots, moles, litters and scars.
2. There is no bleach associated with skin lightening.
Exfoliants work by reducing a pigment called melanin. By using drugs for darker pigmented areas
parts of the body or face darker than others melanin production is interrupted allowing the skin to
glow and become more even. Occasionally, skin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of the development of exogenous lubricant infections, darkening of the skin for a long time and very
resistant to any treatment. Possible skin reactions may develop with lower doses, the risk will increase

Mineral Soft Inventory
In the months that we have had Mineral Soft, I have logged over way 100 hours linking, tying and
correcting the data that is in Mineral Soft. That s not including the time it took me to create the
spreadsheets required for the upload.
In the time, it took me to build out the spreadsheets plus the time it took for the folks at Mineral Soft
to upload our data, I could have created all the data that is in Mineral Soft with the correct ties. It has
taken more than 2.5 weeks to create all of the tract allocations for the wells in OEP and OMR, so that
we can see the revenue associated with each acquisition. It was my understanding that things like this
were being done when I sent over the spreadsheets.
For every single entry in Mineral Soft ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not to mention, the random wells that OEP or OMR doesn t even own. Wells like the one below
(Mandaree 4 15H) were peppered throughout both entities. And I couldn t find them on the Asset
Tracker. Nor in the county records could I find where we bought the interest in that Section, Township
and Range combination. Did you know there is no function to mark a well as Sold? My current work
around is adding z to the first part of well name. As the wells usually sort by name, adding the z to the
beginning pushes the sold wells to end of the list.
As for the Acquisitions, the tracts had to be tied and add the location information needed to be entered.
If the Notes field was on the upload, the adding of the location information would have been done at
the time of upload, saving me many hours. Instead of having to input the information in Notes field;
actually, having some of the legal description as fields in the Acquisition tab would be wonderful. At
least, having the County and State as a field in the Acquisition area would be helpful.
Deeds called for adding the files and the lands covered, in the Notes field, for each and every deed
associated with OMR and OEP. Again, having at least the County State for where the deed is recorded
would be a great help. As it stands, the full legal description for every deed is being entered in the
Notes field. Which is quite time consuming.

It was suggested that the President had tried to repair the damages that were caused the Watergate

things that still needed to be done regarding the scandal. The article stated that the officials under the
Watergate scandal were cheating, lying and engaging in illegal activities while in high positions of the
government.
The people believed that the president did not stand up to the crisis and that he had only done the bare

The Chicago Tribune s editorial called for the impeachment of the President, and the author still
believed that the President had tried his best in handling of the matter (Genovese, et. all, 2012).
The scandal forced changes to the politicians that hold office by making renovations in the statehouse
in the way that elections are ran and politicians run their office. The crisis ended with President Nixon
being impeached and a scandal that will forever be remember in American history. Reforms were done
due to the pressure of the scandal. Because of the scandal, the people demand more honesty from their
constintuants. The people also require limits on the amount of money politicians can spend.
The events change the general view on how the press covered politicians. From that point, the press
was able to include the internal personal life of politician reviling what they had otherwise hidden

showed the failures and neglects from the President in his handling of the Watergate crisis that
ultimately led to his resignation.

Samsung Competitive Advantage
Further development of the enterprise depends on way it performs under outer factors of the market.
Regarding Porter s model of business competition forces, the company s position is analyzed
throughout five aspects (Mind Tools Editor Team, 2016). There is a significant threat of the new
competitions as this company is not the only retailer company in the world of electronics and gadgets.
Buyer s behavior defines the future effectiveness of the company as it mostly depends on the way
representatives of the target market are ready to buy top notch products by Apple and Samsung. On
this level of business performance, individual success of the company is closely connected with the
way these companies present themselves and their products on the market. At the same time, the
position of the enterprise s suppliers is vital as they define the competitiveness and variety of goods to
present to the customers. Finally, the competitiveness between the existing members of the market my
significantly influences the GWEL s performance throughout the first several years. Apparently, the
GWEL expects to invest a significant amount of income into further development of the company for
the following five years concerning strong positions of the competitors on the market. To get a

In 1985 Continental purchased the tire division of Semperit, the largest Austrian rubber firm, for DM

Persuasive Essay On Dog Breeding
For being man s supposed best friend, humans too often make choices to benefit themselves instead of
dogs. People decide what traits make a dog cute and disregard what traits make them healthy. Dog
breeding is a harmful practice for dogs both biologically and culturally due to superficial standards.
These dogs are bred to be cute, but that cuteness can inadvertently carry a gene that can lead to
disease, or even the cuteness itself could be debilitating, such as with the poster pug s flat face makes
breathing significantly more difficult. Dogs are living, breathing creatures and the standards set for
their reproduction should factor their well being into the standard of the dog.
Dog breeding is dangerous because to make a perfect dog they too often inbreed and cause birth
defects and other health issues in dogs. Terry Allen, an In These Times senior editor who has written
the magazine s monthly investigative health and science column since 2006, argues in We re Breeding
Dogs to Death that neither price, pedigree nor being loved like a member of the family can shield a
dog from the pain, breathing difficulties, cancer, panoply of debilitating genetic disorders, mental
illness, crippling physiognomy and shortened life span that disproportionately plague purebreds. The
article Selective Breeding or Artificial Selection explains that in dogs, the frequency of being
homozygous for rare recessive disorders increases when inbreeding occurs, potentially causing severe

civility is essential to our ability as a nation to confront together difficult issues, even when we may

Albert Bandura, a renowned psychologist, studied how some behaviors are learned through imitation.
He calls this the social learning theory. It is exemplified in his classic experiment called the Bobo Doll
Experiment. The children participating in the experiment were individually shown into a room with
toys and then played with them for 10 minutes while either, 1) 24 children (12 girls and 12 boys)
watched a male or female model behaving aggressively toward a toy called a Bobo Doll . The adults
attacked the Bobo doll in a distinctive manner, either punching or kicking and in some cases using a
hammer. 2) Another 24 children were exposed to a non aggressive model who played in a quiet and
subdued manner for 10 minutes. 3) The final 24 children were used as a control group and were not
exposed to any model at all (McLeod, 2011). In order to study whether these three situations had a
different effect on the children, the experimenter subjected all the children to mild aggression arousal
(McLeod, 2011) by taking each child separately to a room with toys. Once the child began to play
with the toys, the experimenter told the child that these were the experimenter s best toys and she had
decided to reserve them for the other children (McLeod, 2011). The experimenter then brought the
child into the next room, which had some aggressive toys, such as a toy hammer, and some non
aggressive toys. For twenty minutes the child s

Science of Tea
There doesn t seem to be a downside to tea, American Dietetic Association
Black, white and green tea are all made from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, and although they
undergo different processing each tea contains significant amounts of catechins. Catechins are a type
of disease fighting flavonoid and antioxidant that help to fight off cellular damage in the body.
The magic health ingredient in teas is polyphenols and how much you ingest is relative to the
fermentation level used in their fermentation processing. In order of levels of polyphenols black teas
are lowest, Oolong teas are next, with green and white teas having the highest levels polyphenols.

Thin Layer Chromatography ( Tlc )
Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is a technique used to identify components within a compound and
determine the compounds purity. The purpose of this experiment is to determine what solvent works
the best at separating the different pigments of the paprika extract. The solvents used to develop the
plate are hexane and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), as well as three mixtures of the two solutions
(5% MTBE in hexane, 10% MTBE in hexane, and 30% MTBE in hexane). Hexane is a non polar
alkane that is used as a solvent for many different things and MTBE is a polar ether that is used as a
fuel additive. In this experiment, five TLC plates were set up and ran in each of the five prepared
solvents. There are four steps when performing TLC which include: spot (touch the capillary to the
plate briefly so the compound runs out and forms a small spot on the plate), develop (choose a solvent
to develop the plate, then place the slide in the developing chamber), visualize (when the solvent
reaches the stop line, remove and visualize the data), and calculate (measure the distance between the

characters show many similarities, but also difference. Dally is a hoodlum, that breaks every law and
Johnny is afraid of his own shadow, how could they even have one common thing?
DIFFERENCES:
Although Dally and Johnny share some alike traits, they also have many differences. For example,
Dally is a tenacious, villainous, and a greaser while Johnny is a polite, perceptive, and craven greaser.
Johnny is scared of his own shadow and Dally does not fear anything. His own gang thinks that
Johnny is the gang s pet and dally is mean. Johnny has never left the greaser neighborhood, when
Dally spent three years on the wild side in New York and gets tougher and harder there.
The description befitting Johnny gives out sympathy and empathy, If you can picture a little dark
puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you ll have Johnny...he
had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes... (11). On the other hand, Dally om the book just makes
him seem scarier. His eyes were blue, blazing ice, cold with the hatred in the whole world...he was
tougher than the rest of us (them) tougher, colder, meaner. (10). It shows the indignant, confident look
on Dally s face. Dally could be compared to a tiger, when Johnny is like a puppy.
Another difference between Dally and Johnny are Dally love to fight and has a huge record with the
police, while Johnny hates

Jack Phillips Drawing A Line In The Gay Wedding Cake Case
In Drawing a Line in the Gay Wedding Cake case , the author John Corvino says that Jack Phillips, the
baker who refused to sell a wedding cake for a gay couple, was being discriminatory against the
customers. He didn t refuse to sell the cake because he just doesn t support homosexuality but because
he didn t like the fact that a gay couple went to his bakery. Although Phillips claims his actions are
protected by the first amendment of the Constitution, the truth is that he was violating the Constitution
by discriminating customers based on their sexual orientation. In 2012, a same sex couple attempted to
buy their wedding cake, but the owner refused to sell it. They didn t ask for anything unusual, like an

Negative Effects Of The 18th Amendment Essay
In the 1920 s the 18th amendment came in to play. The intentions of the amendment were good but the
outcomes were mostly negative. It destroyed the economy and helped with the increase of illegal
activity. Although there were a lot of negatives that came from the 18th amendment there were a
couple of positives that still affect us today. In the 1920 s the 18th amendment was put in place to try
and better the economy. Many business owners supported this amendment hoping it would increase
the efficiency of workers with less accidents. They were also hoping the amendment would increase
production of other goods since they would work faster sobor. After WW1 president Woodrow Wilson
instituted a temporary wartime prohibition in order to save grain for producing food for the war.
(History.com Staff) That same year congress submitted the 18th amendment for state ratification.
Despite early signs of success, those who wanted to get their hands on alcohol found new and creative
ways to do it. Since the having or consuming alcohol was not illegal bootleggers made a lot of money

When the amendment went into effect they expected the sales of household goods and clothing to
increase. Everyone expected the sales on grape juice and soft drinks to increase because of the closing
of all the saloons. Even theatres expected more customers because the people who drank alcohol
would need theatres to entertain themselves since they didn t have alcohol to entertain themselves
anymore. None of this happened in fact even resteraunts lost customers because they couldn t legally
sell alcohol. The effects of prohibition on the economy overall were negative, the closing of breweries
and saloons led to the loss of thousands of jobs. Since so many jobs were lost it led to an increase of
illegal activity. Jobless people would produce and transport the illegal alcohol for a means of money.

Jane Hall was an American physicist born in 1915 at a small town outside Denver Colorado. Shortly
after receiving her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago in 1942, Hall became a research
assistant at the Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory. Her reputation like so many other determined
female scientist of the time proved an excellent scientist and administrator earning her a position as a
Senior Supervisor at Hanford less than a year later. At Hanford, in addition to her normal duties, she

In The Gross Clinic, the patient is completely covered up and you can only see the patient s thigh and
some parts of the mid section of the body. Both white cloth covers the entire top half of the patient and
much of the surgeon is in close proximity with the patient s body. In the Agnew Clinic, you are
allowed to see that the patient is in fact a woman patient and are allowed to see her facial expressions
and bare midsection of the body exposing the breasts of the female. This sharp transition in painting
style undoubtedly caused large amounts of unrest with the public. In today s surgery, the surgeons
only encounter the part of the body that is hurt, as in The Gross Clinic; the rest of the body is covered
up taking the human aspect out of the patient. This may be a good thing, as surgeons may perform
better without seeing the face of the individual on which they are working. Although the Agnew clinic

Body Ritual Among The Nacirema By Miner
Effective communication has many aspects that can be described as either transparent or a hidden
unknown, which in many readings it describes how ambiguity is a necessary evil in communications.
The Triangle of Linguistic Structure can give phonology meaning form, semantics the value of
meaning, and pragmatics that feature the intention to uncertain communications. The direct statements
of saying someone is dead, can be harmful so they use etiquette to give reason to use a buffer and
instead say they have moved away. For a literary example I will use Who am I this time? by Vonnegut
and Body Ritual among the Nacirema by Miner, for both readings use ambiguity to hide an allegory of
communication concepts. The Body Ritual among the Nacirema

As a consequence of the last Conservative Government s privatisation programme, the passenger rail
network now consists of the following principal elements: Railtrack PLC Train Operating Companies
(TOCs) Rolling Stock Leasing Companies (ROSCOs) Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR) Market
Position: Rail is only one of a variety of modes of passenger transport in most developed countries.
The other modes of passenger transport are buses and coaches, cars and vans, motor cycles, pedal
cycles and air. It should be noted, however, that since cycling is only suitable for very short distances,
and air travel generally only becomes economic for journeys in excess of 300 km, rails principal
competitor is the motor vehicle. Although rail usage has remained constant in passenger kilometre
terms over the last decade, it has failed to keep pace with the growing demand for passenger travel and
its market share has fallen accordingly. With bus and coach traffic showing identical behaviour, the
beneficiary has inevitably been the car. Over the last 40 years the percentage of total traffic travelling
by rail has fallen from 17% to 5.6%, while the percentage travelling by car has increased from 31% to

Third-Class Status Of Indigenous Community
The factors discussed up until now have involved obvious discrepancies towards indigenous
communities, but the one to follow is more subtle and has gone un noticed for too long and needs to
be brought to attention. The perpetuation of a second or even third class status of indigenous people,
the old origins of this status is still largely present in societies around the world, and this
misconception has been widely adopted. Their negative depiction in cinematography and the failure to
properly educate up and coming generations on indigenous people, contributes to the minuscule
progress that has occurred in recognizing and respecting indigenous rights. As liberals believe in the

Maine needs a better proactive prevention program for suicide. Maine s suicide rate among all ages is
unreasonably high. It is especially disconcerting to have a high rate among young adults. According to
the Maine Suicide Prevention Program, one suicide happens every two days or 180 suicides year in
Maine. It is the tenth leading cause of death among all age bracket in Maine. It is the second leading
cause of death for ages 15 to 24; and the fourth leading cause in ages 10 to 14. ( Maine Suicide

many programs in place to help. There is a specific hotline to call for each county in Maine. If the

intervention, support, face to face with professionals, and treatment recommendations in the most
comfortable and safe environment possible to be given to the client. ( Maine Suicide Prevention

was poor and is now the founder of a very popular chain restaurant shows that he succeeded even
though he had a lot of troubles. Although Sanders had a recipe, he couldn t really do much with it, but
it will soon make him wealthy. In Britannica s biographies she states, After selling his restaurant,

Batman (originally referred to as the Bat Man and still sometimes as the Batman) is a DC Comics
fictional superhero who first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. He has since become,
along with Superman and Spider Man, one of the world s most recognized superheroes.[1] Batman
was co created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, although only Kane receives official credit
for the character. Batman s secret identity is Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist, playboy, and

creator of the character. Kane himself, however, in later years willingly acknowledged Finger s

Can the past be forgiven? Can people who have been traumatized live with memory and each other

It works to create a positive peace through a transformation of conflict. In 1992, United Nations
secretary General Boutros Ghali released his report titled An Agenda for Peace. This document
proposed peace building as Action to identify and solidify peace in order to avoid relapse into conflict,
(Boutros Ghali 11). While two sides are still in conflict, there is not a chance for communication
between sides. Until violent conflict ceases, the two parties will continue to dehumanize one another
and decrease the ability to understand one another. However, conflicts cannot always resolve
themselves and outside intervention is sometimes needed to avoid a cycle of revenge, which can be a
result. The problem is a well known bias in human perception, whereby we inflate the value of the
wrongs we suffer, and minimize the value of those we ourselves inflict. (Santa Barbara 179). Luckily,
there are nations such as Canada, with politicians like Lloyd Axworthy, who created the Canadian
peace building initiative in 1996. The initiative suggested a concern for the multidimensional and
integrated causes of civil war and thus acknowledged the need to address the economic, social, and
political aspects of reconstruction and reconciliation (Keating 171). Michael R. Marrus argues that
there are four contexts that need to be addressed when trying to develop a strategy for reconciliation.
These are political, legal, material, and cultural. These different areas of concern

Life In Milan Kundera s The Unbearable Lightness Of Being
In The Unbearable Lightness of Being , Milan Kundera informs readers that without the ability to
compare our lives to others, we cannot find meaning in our lives, but remain between life s lightness
and heaviness. He does this by illustrating the relationships between four characters: Tomas, Tereza,
Sabina, and Franz. The novel begins in the year 1968 with Tomas, who is a brilliant surgeon from
Prague and a perpetual bachelor. In a small town cafe, he fortuitously met Tereza, who was his
waitress; to Tereza, the moment was magical because one of her favorite compositions by Beethoven
was playing on the radio and that he enjoyed literature. Tereza evidently followed Tomas to Prague
with her life packed within a suitcase and she intended to offer her life to him. The two started living
with each other, but Tomas was incapable of terminating his bachelor lifestyle full of mistresses. He
tried to hide his infidelity, but Tereza found a letter from one of his mistresses, Sabina. She wrote to
Tomas saying, I want to make love to you in my studio. It will be like a stage surrounded by people.
The audience won t be allowed up close, but they won t be able to take their eyes off us. (Pg. 16).
Tomas confessed and told her that these sexual acts were separate from his love for her. This
information marred Tereza s mind; she starting having horrendous nightmares and began
contemplating suicide. He then married her, to relieve her of her distress. Yet he still kept his
mistresses. Eventually Sabina and Tereza become close friends, but Tereza s jealousy still remained
the same. Sabina, Tereza, and Tomas fled to Switzerland due to the Soviet Union inhabiting
Czechoslovakia. Tereza left behind her career as a photographer, became unemployed, and had to sit
home alone as Tomas continued his affairs. She then began to believe, when the strong were too weak
to hurt the weak, the weak have to be strong enough to leave. (Pg. 75). Then, she returned back to
Prague. Tomas was enjoying his liberation for a few days, but he gave up and left for Prague. This
evidently meant that the couple gave up their freedom because there was no chance that the couple
would be allowed to leave again due to the Communist regime. In

opportunities and even the right to vote. As I am caught up in reading, I hear a knock at the door. I
look through the window and see that it is my mother standing in the cold. Right when I open the
door, I realize that something is wrong. Mama? What s wrong? I say, dreading what her answer will
be. It s papa. He s gone. I got a letter at work today, she says, her voice shaky and soft. All I can do is

Captain Aimee Le Medec Research Paper
No words can describe the cloud of sorrow that hangs over Halifax and surrounding areas. December
6th, 1917 will forever mark a tragedy in our history. I am very blessed that my business and I survived
the explosion, but I too am still grieving the loved ones I lost. As I walk down to what once was
known as the Richmond District of Halifax, it hard to imagine that a street was once here, a home
there, because all that is visible now is debris. Debris that is covered with a light blanket of snow on
this cold January day. Nestled in the heart of Halifax lies the legendary harbour. The day is December
6th, 1817. It seems as if it is a normal day in Halifax. The two ships that caused the explosion were the
Imo and the Mont Blanc . The Mont Blanc was a French general cargo and a munitions ship owned by
Cie Generale Transatlantique. The ship was considered very old yet had a ... Show more content on

First, I think that Captain Aimee Le Medec is ultimately to blame because he abandoned ship. He
could of prevented the explosion through many different ways such as opening the hatches or turning
the boat back to sea. Instead he did none of these. In addition Captain Aimee Le Medec blatantly
ignored putting the red flag up on the Mont Blanc. For 20 minutes crowds collected around Halifax
Harbour to watch the billowing smoke filled with sparks and fire as the Mont Blanc drifted towards
the wharf. If the red flag was up then these people would have been warned that there were munitions
on board and the people would of had a chance to run from the wharf. Finally I that Captain Aimee Le
Medec is ultimately to blame because he could have moved the ship towards port when the Mont
Blanc encountered the Imo in the narrow harbour. Instead he entered a state of shock, ordering the
crew to abandon ship. I feel that Captain Aimee Le Medec never took initiative to stop this tragedy
which he should feel ashamed

Sealed Air Company Hbs Case Essay

Sealed Air Corporation
The president and chief executive officer of Sealed Air Corporation, T. J. Dermot Dunphy, explained
the firm s 25% average annual growth in net sales and net earnings from 1971 to 1980: The company s
history has been characterized by technical accomplishment and market leadership. During the last 10
years we built on our development of the first closed cell, lightweight cushioning material, introduced
the first foam in place packaging system, and engineered the first complete solar heating system for
swimming pools. We intend to follow the same management guidelines in the 1980s. We intend to
seek market leadership ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two GAFCEL salespeople one full time, the other about half time had reached a $1 million annual
sales rate. Several of AirCap s distributors had taken on the GAFCEL line. Hauser was preparing to
recommend Sealed Air s reaction to these somewhat unanticipated competitors. The firm could
produce an uncoated bubble as cheaply as GAFCEL within a month with no major capital investment;
it could run on machines used for another Sealed Air product. If Hauser were to recommend that the
historic champion of barrier coating offer an uncoated bubble, he would have to specify timing, the
marketing program for the new product, and any adjustments in policies for AirCap cushioning and
Sealed Air s other products. As Hauser thought about his options, he again flipped through the training
manual recently distributed to Sealed Air s sales force: How to Sell against Uncoated Bubbles.
The Protective Packaging Market
The three major use segments of the protective packaging market were: 1. Positioning, blocking, and
bracing: These protective materials had to secure large, heavy, usually semirugged items in a
container. Typical applications included shipment of motors and computer peripherals. 2. Flexible
wraps: These materials came under less pressure per square foot. Applications included glassware,
small spare parts, and light medical instruments. 3. Void fill: These

The Emergency Of Climate Change And Why People Are Failing
Take Home Essay #2 (Response #1)
The article written by Franz and Mayer (2009) explains how an everyday situation or global issue is
perceived as an emergency. In the article the authors focus on the emergency of climate change and
why people are failing to take action. To help explain this, Franz and Mayer convey to us a system that
includes five steps: step one, noticing the event; step two, interpreting the event as an emergency; step
three, feeling personally responsible to act; step four, knowing what to do; and step five, implementing
the required acts.
While the main point of this article is the aforementioned system, they extend this five stage model to
explore why people do and do not take action against climate change. In the first step, Franz and
Mayer provide examples of a couple of things that attest to climate change. Things like rising CO2
emissions and temperature changes are only amongst a few of the things that contribute but two of the
main factors. The authors mention that, People in modern industrial societies like the United States
spend up to 90% of their time indoors in artificial, temperature controlled environment s (Evans
McCoy, 1998). It is things like these that contribute to the inability of some to see climate change as
an issue because they are so disconnected from the world around them, but as the authors conveyed
the opposite, people who are intimately tied to the environment do tend to notice the environmental
changes that are taking

  • 2. John Stuart Mill Harm Principle The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others [14]. In John Stuart Mill s On Liberty, his harm principle addresses interference in other people s actions. He contends that the exercise of power over others is only justified when preventing harm. It is important to keep in mind that some harm is acceptable, but an action that infringes on another s interests should be prevented and punished. In accordance with Mill s description of his harm principle, the statement that protecting liberty through this principle prioritizes the development of individuality over social progress is somewhat valid. It is only somewhat valid because Mill prioritizes the self development of the individual in order to help society progress rather than instead of the progression of society. He believes that freedom is designed to protect individualism and that in a state of nature there would be no social contract because of the concept of social good. This concept conveys that because people receive protection from society then they owe a specific behavior in return. Mill justifies the conservation of originality with the object of personal wellbeing and societal good. His justification reveals the way that, in preventing harm, he prioritizes the preservation of the individual to better the progression of society. Mill stresses the importance of originality when he proposes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Effects Of Stress On Captive Zoo Animals Introduction. The effects of stress on captive zoo animals has been a major concern among zoologists as well as zookeepers in recent years (Fernandez et al.2009). In previous studies, one of the major factors inducing stress in captive animals that appears to have been overlooked, are the noise levels created by the presence of zoo visitors and the effectiveness of the design of indoor zoo exhibits in reducing the noise levels in particular. While research exists showing that the presence of zoo visitors can be a source of enrichment for captive animals, particularly those who are social by nature, further investigations have indicated that visitor presence can in fact be a source of stress in non social species including felids (Hosey 2000). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This study will look at the effectiveness of the exhibit design in preventing noise pollution caused by the increased number of visitors to the Milwaukee County Zoo jaguar exhibit. The exhibit which contains both an indoor portion which is designed to resemble the jaguar s native jungle habitat as well as an outdoor portion, currently houses three adult jaguars, Pat, Stella, and Francisco. Both Pat, who is 16 years old and formally a Problem jaguar from Belize, and Stella who came to the Milwaukee County Zoo in 2005, live together as a breeding pair (K. Kuhn in conversation). Francisco is the 2 year old son of Pat and Stella and lives alone (K. Kuhn in conversation). Over the course of six weeks, I will be collecting data using Wensen WS1361C decibel meters which are equipped with data loggers. The decibel meters will be used both inside and outside the jaguar exhibit to determine the effectiveness of the exhibit design. To analyze the zoo visitor effect, as well as the frequency of stress related behavioral responses observed, data will be collected during on three different days of the week both through observation of the jaguars as well as later analysis of the data recorded by the decibel meters. Data will be collected both on days where zoo visitation is predicted to increase, which are designated as Family Free Days, where visitors receive free admission as well as Non Family Free days and Thursday afternoons where a decrease in zoo visitation is predicted for observation time totaling a minimum of 15 hours. The recorded data will then be analyzed to determine if the increased noise pollution created by an increase in zoo visitors will correlate with an increase in stress related behavioral responses by the jaguars. ... • 4. Mass Over Mass Media By Steven Pinker The article Mass Over Mass Media is written by Steven Pinker. Pinker is a professor in Psychology at Harvard University who focusses on visual cognation and psychology in language. He is well known for The Language Instinct How the Mind Works. He was also listed as one of the most influential people out of 100 in the world. Also, he is known for his ongoing debate over how the internet has affected our world. Furthermore, author Steven Pinker, states his thesis in a peculiar way by stating that people often react in a rash way and make negative assumptions when it comes to inventions and their impacts. All forms of media have the power to draw a person in but that person must control themselves by using the information without abusing it. Consequently, social media and the internet have had a major impact on our daily lives from the way we work to the way we learn and socialize. • 5. Symbolism within in A Worn Path Symbolism is a literary device that uses objects or events that hides the even greater idea beyond what the text it gives you. For example, the bald eagle may seem like a fascinating bird, but to the eyes of an American the bald eagle represents freedom. Symbolism can be found throughout our everyday lives. Shoes have logos that are used to show what brand of shoes ones self is wearing, also money may seem like just paper, but it can also represent power. In the short story, A Worn Path, the main character Phoenix Jackson ventures through the forest to get to her main destination Natchez. Phoenix Jackson is an old, little woman that is blind and needs to be carrying a cane due to her almost complete blindness. Phoenix Jackson travels through the dangerous forest alone. On her venture she meets many obstacles such as a crossing a river by walking over a log that lay across it. During her advances she often drifts into a daydream and dreams about events happening, but it turns out to be her mind playing games on her. While on her way to Natchez she encounters a white hunter, the hunter shows no respect for her by calling her granny and even pointing a gun at old Phoenix herself. During Phoenix s time of living segregation was still prevalent because in the short story Phoenix makes her way in Natchez and the Anglo Americans call her names such as: Granny, Grandma, and Old Timer. Examine this statement with reference to a range of artists and artworks. Even before a young child can read or write they learn the alphabet as the beginning of interpreting the process of reading and writing. Equally a small child can generally recognise popular signs and symbols, such as the M for McDonalds or the Coke symbol before they can read. Just as society associates signs and symbols with various meanings, artists convey their thinking, beliefs and feelings to the audience through their works. Whiteley s works parallels Van Gogh s in its deliberate use of symbols in his paintings and while Whiteley observed many of the principles of Symbolism, his had its own unique facility of Surrealist attached. This can be appreciated in Night Café (1972) [refer Appendix 3] where Whiteley depicted Van Gogh s The Night Café (1888) [refer Appendix 1] and distorted the image and took the lines of the room to a vanishing point, idealising Whiteley s Surrealist style. Whiteley s use of symbolism in his works is outstandingly illustrated in Whiteley s Archibald Prize winning self portrait Art, Life and the Other Thing (1978) [refer Appendix 4] where Whiteley demonstrates the controversy of the Archibald in his representation of the William Dobell s controversial winning portrait of Joshua Smith (1943) [refer Appendix 5] and John Bloomfield s disqualification from the Archibald 1975 because of his portrait that was deemed to be painted from a picture of Tim Burstall. I am not an active learner. An active learner tends to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it. If a student was an active learner in my classroom I would use the phrase, Let s try it out, move around, and visually do it to see how it works. It tells the student that I am willing to be active instead of sitting down all the time. By being active it keeps the student moving and focused on the activity. In general, most people feel more confident with clear skin, even. For many, the battle with skin disease can be a real obstacle that needs to be overcome to achieve this goal. That is why dermatologists prescribe skin lightening medications to treat common ailments that lead to unevenness or discoloration. Dr. Kassim explains, One of the most common reasons for patients to be prescribed exfoliates is that treatment of postmenopausal phenomena can occur to anyone. • 16. Persuasive Essay On Dog Breeding For being man s supposed best friend, humans too often make choices to benefit themselves instead of dogs. People decide what traits make a dog cute and disregard what traits make them healthy. Dog breeding is a harmful practice for dogs both biologically and culturally due to superficial standards. These dogs are bred to be cute, but that cuteness can inadvertently carry a gene that can lead to disease, or even the cuteness itself could be debilitating, such as with the poster pug s flat face makes breathing significantly more difficult. Dogs are living, breathing creatures and the standards set for their reproduction should factor their well being into the standard of the dog. Dog breeding is dangerous because to make a perfect dog they too often inbreed and cause birth defects and other health issues in dogs. Terry Allen, an In These Times senior editor who has written the magazine s monthly investigative health and science column since 2006, argues in We re Breeding Dogs to Death that neither price, pedigree nor being loved like a member of the family can shield a dog from the pain, breathing difficulties, cancer, panoply of debilitating genetic disorders, mental illness, crippling physiognomy and shortened life span that disproportionately plague purebreds. The purpose of this experiment is to determine what solvent works the best at separating the different pigments of the paprika extract. The solvents used to develop the plate are hexane and methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE), as well as three mixtures of the two solutions (5% MTBE in hexane, 10% MTBE in hexane, and 30% MTBE in hexane). Hexane is a non polar alkane that is used as a solvent for many different things and MTBE is a polar ether that is used as a fuel additive. In this experiment, five TLC plates were set up and ran in each of the five prepared solvents. There are four steps when performing TLC which include: spot (touch the capillary to the plate briefly so the compound runs out and forms a small spot on the plate), develop (choose a solvent to develop the plate, then place the slide in the developing chamber), visualize (when the solvent reaches the stop line, remove and visualize the data), and calculate (measure the distance between the spot and start line to calculate the Rf values). The fact that he was poor and is now the founder of a very popular chain restaurant shows that he succeeded even though he had a lot of troubles. Although Sanders had a recipe, he couldn t really do much with it, but it will soon make him wealthy. In Britannica s biographies she states, After selling his restaurant, Sanders took to the road armed with his recipe but signed up only five restaurants in two years. By 1964, however, there were more than 600 franchises in the U.S and Canada and Sanders was making $300,000 a year(Har 1). Seeing how Sanders only signed up five restaurants in two years shows that he was not really that successful with his recipe. He did infact overcome this because later down the road he was signed up to 600 different franchises and started making money. Although Sanders is as popular and successful as he is know, he never got handed anything, he succeeded all on his own. It works to create a positive peace through a transformation of conflict. In 1992, United Nations secretary General Boutros Ghali released his report titled An Agenda for Peace. This document proposed peace building as Action to identify and solidify peace in order to avoid relapse into conflict, (Boutros Ghali 11). While two sides are still in conflict, there is not a chance for communication between sides. Until violent conflict ceases, the two parties will continue to dehumanize one another and decrease the ability to understand one another. However, conflicts cannot always resolve themselves and outside intervention is sometimes needed to avoid a cycle of revenge, which can be a result. The problem is a well known bias in human perception, whereby we inflate the value of the wrongs we suffer, and minimize the value of those we ourselves inflict. (Santa Barbara 179). Luckily, there are nations such as Canada, with politicians like Lloyd Axworthy, who created the Canadian peace building initiative in 1996. The initiative suggested a concern for the multidimensional and integrated causes of civil war and thus acknowledged the need to address the economic, social, and political aspects of reconstruction and reconciliation (Keating 171). Michael R. Marrus argues that there are four contexts that need to be addressed when trying to develop a strategy for reconciliation. These are political, legal, material, and cultural. Life In Milan Kundera s The Unbearable Lightness Of Being In The Unbearable Lightness of Being , Milan Kundera informs readers that without the ability to compare our lives to others, we cannot find meaning in our lives, but remain between life s lightness and heaviness. He does this by illustrating the relationships between four characters: Tomas, Tereza, Sabina, and Franz. The novel begins in the year 1968 with Tomas, who is a brilliant surgeon from Prague and a perpetual bachelor. In a small town cafe, he fortuitously met Tereza, who was his waitress; to Tereza, the moment was magical because one of her favorite compositions by Beethoven was playing on the radio and that he enjoyed literature. Tereza evidently followed Tomas to Prague with her life packed within a suitcase and she intended to offer her life to him. The two started living with each other, but Tomas was incapable of terminating his bachelor lifestyle full of mistresses. He tried to hide his infidelity, but Tereza found a letter from one of his mistresses, Sabina. She wrote to Tomas saying, I want to make love to you in my studio. It will be like a stage surrounded by people. The audience won t be allowed up close, but they won t be able to take their eyes off us. (Pg. 16). Tomas confessed and told her that these sexual acts were separate from his love for her. This information marred Tereza s mind; she starting having horrendous nightmares and began contemplating suicide. He then married her, to relieve her of her distress. Yet he still kept his mistresses. Eventually Sabina and Tereza become close friends, but Tereza s jealousy still remained the same. Sabina, Tereza, and Tomas fled to Switzerland due to the Soviet Union inhabiting Czechoslovakia. Tereza left behind her career as a photographer, became unemployed, and had to sit home alone as Tomas continued his affairs. She then began to believe, when the strong were too weak to hurt the weak, the weak have to be strong enough to leave. (Pg. 75). Then, she returned back to Prague. Tomas was enjoying his liberation for a few days, but he gave up and left for Prague. This evidently meant that the couple gave up their freedom because there was no chance that the couple would be allowed to leave again due to the Communist regime. In ... The Emergency Of Climate Change And Why People Are Failing Take Home Essay #2 (Response #1) The article written by Franz and Mayer (2009) explains how an everyday situation or global issue is perceived as an emergency. In the article the authors focus on the emergency of climate change and why people are failing to take action. To help explain this, Franz and Mayer convey to us a system that includes five steps: step one, noticing the event; step two, interpreting the event as an emergency; step three, feeling personally responsible to act; step four, knowing what to do; and step five, implementing the required acts. While the main point of this article is the aforementioned system, they extend this five stage model to explore why people do and do not take action against climate change. In the first step, Franz and Mayer provide examples of a couple of things that attest to climate change. Things like rising CO2 emissions and temperature changes are only amongst a few of the things that contribute but two of the main factors. The authors mention that, People in modern industrial societies like the United States spend up to 90% of their time indoors in artificial, temperature controlled environment s (Evans McCoy, 1998). It is things like these that contribute to the inability of some to see climate change as an issue because they are so disconnected from the world around them, but as the authors conveyed the opposite, people who are intimately tied to the environment do tend to notice the environmental changes that are taking ...
