Useful safety motto for those involved in
piling work is the ‘5W’:
• Wear hard helmets as protection against falling
objects from heights
• Wear ear plugs as noise levels may exceed 90dB
• Wear goggles or safety glasses to protect eyes
• Wear safety shoes or boots as protection for your
foot
• Wear hand gloves
Other than for piling works, all above
safety gears and safety belts are required
for personal safety at construction sites for
handling different kinds of construction
activities.
Safety belts – essential for working at
heights
After wearing safety belt it should be tied
with something which is considered to be
secured
Hand gloves must be worn while doing
material handling jobs
Ex:- Welding, Gas cutting etc.
Wearing of protective goggles or face
shields is necessary for performing
welding, gas cutting, grinding, brick
dressing etc.
Ear plugs must be worn in noisy areas
where noise levels exceeds 90dB
 IS:1179 – Equipment for eye and face
protection during welding
 IS: 2925 – Specification for safety helmets
 IS: 6994 – Specification for safety gloves
 IS: 7293 – Safety code for working with
construction machinery
 IS:8520 – Guide for selection industrial safety
equipment for protection of eye, ear and face.
 Other than the mentioned codes above, there
are few more safety related codes in practice
which are issued by BIS.
Even with safety gears provided one
should continue to remain alert and vigilant
about personal safety
Concentration hazardous dust and fumes
at the construction site must be within
permissible limits
Access to and exit from the work place
should be hazard free at all levels
Work permit is needed for entry or working
in danger-prone zones like blasting site,
stacks, silos, wells etc.
Safety guards and safety devices of
equipment and machinery should be
maintained properly
Dark areas should be illuminated –
irrespective of this one should carry a torch
while moving in dark areas
Personnel engaged in radiography should
undergo frequent medical examinations
Safety nets should be provided maximum
6m below the place where workers are
executing work at heights
Over exertion of individuals should be
avoided.
