This document discusses paralytic ileus, defined as a failure of intestinal peristalsis due to failure of the neuromuscular mechanism. It can be localized or generalized. Causes include postoperative issues, infections, toxins, spinal injuries, and more. Clinical features include no passage of gas or bowel sounds, abdominal distension, vomiting, tachycardia, respiratory distress, abdominal pain, and fluid/electrolyte imbalance. Treatment focuses on treating the underlying cause, IV fluids, electrolyte management, antibiotics, analgesics, and decompression techniques if needed.
