Summary Of Nacirema
Looking back at the article Nacirema, I feel my daily routines are weird and tradition as a Chinese.
After reading the article Nacirema, it shows that the belief of American think their culture is
superior to others, they tendency to view other cultures from their own views. Some of the
traditional culture, maybe looks weird in another people s eye. For example, as a Chinese, we eat
chicken feet, duck feet, and chicken viscera which American people don t like it. We like to have
a morning tea with family to eat dimsum, deep dried dough sticks, steamed buns, tofu pudding,
noodles, and rice for breakfast, but the American people like to have some coffee, milk, eggs, fired
potatoes, cereal, toast, and pancake. I like salty stuff, but American

Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism Essay
Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism
Jude the Obscure is indeed a lesson in cruelty and despair; the inevitable by products of Social
Darwinism. The main characters of the book are controlled by fate s compelling arm of
extraordinary muscular power (1), weakly resisting the influence of their own sexuality, and of
society and nature around them.
Jude s world is one in which only the fittest survive, and he is clearly not equipped to number
amongst the fittest. In keeping with the strong Darwinian undercurrents that run through the book,
a kind of natural selection ensures that Jude s offspring do not survive to procreate either. Their
death by murder and suicide is but one of many grisly instances of cruelty ... Show more content on

Not like our poor boy here. (3)
Although the Widow Edlin s words refer to Jude s physical status, Hardy is also using them to
comment on Jude as a societal and intellectual being. On that level too, he was clearly not fit
enough to emerge triumphantly from the struggles of Darwinian society.
If Hardy s message is that only the fittest can escape nature and society s cruelties, then one must
ask, which of the characters in the novel is most successful in the competitive atmosphere?
Phillotson certainly achieves some measure of professional success as a schoolmaster, but like
Jude, he too was unable to break into the echelons of university academia. Furthermore, despite
marrying Sue, his union with her was less than successful. One gets the sense that in his one
sided love for Sue, Phillotson was swept along powerlessly by the tides of his own sexuality just
as Jude was. Rather than pro actively seeking to cultivate Sue s love for him or to gain some form
of self determination, he chose to remain meek and impassive, very much allowing Sue to
determine the course that his life with her would take, if it was to be with her at all.
Is Sue then the prime candidate for social fitness in the work? Sue herself fought against the

The Issue Of Legalizing Gambling
INTRODUCTION
Casinos are all throughout the country, but are they a positive influence for our society? Our
economy? There are people on all sides of this issue; some people have difficulty determining the
reasons behind legalizing gambling in the first place. In a panel data analysis done by Doug Walker
and John Jackson, gambling is legalized to offer other opportunities for states to increase revenue
(Walker and Jackson 1). This explains why legalizing gambling is important to state governments,
saying states need different revenue options and that gambling would help with an increase in
revenue for the states.
Other people on this issue wonder if casinos can be consistently relied upon for state revenue.
According to Forbes, the casino industry in Las Vegas has been decreasing because of the
recession from 2007 2009. Outside of the United States, the industry has increased over the past
few years (Forbes). This indicates that the casino business isn t as big as it was before the
recession. This has big implications on state revenues and budgeting. Global Gaming Business
Magazine is along those lines, saying two casinos in Atlantic City are empty; not enough supply of
casinos for the demand (Global Gaming Business Magazine). The recession has made significant
impacts on the industry and the industry can t keep up. And states need to be aware of these issues
so they don t make the same mistakes as Atlantic City. While they increased economic development,
Atlantic City did

My First Concert
When an individual asks What was a moment that has changed you forever , it can be extremely
difficult to answer. Such a broad question brings up many notable moments from an already
large selection. If I could pick one that makes me smile every time I look back onto it. It would
be the first concert I ever went to. It was not only my first time hearing my favorite band live, but
it was also my first time listening to live music. On top of the already intense experience, I had
learned something very important that day. Through the generosity of a very kind woman, I was
able to experience my very first concert. I learned that Generosity pushes beyond simple gestures
and acts of kindness. It can leave a lasting impression on any person, changing them for the
better. Since then, reflecting on all the moments that still bring many laughs and memories I
made that day only assured me that I would remember it forever. Fatefully, on a Friday night, the
day before the concert, I was currently on the computer at my house. I received a text around
seven o clock at night. One of my friends had texted me, saying that they were outside my house.
As I went to the door, I saw that my friend, along with five other people I knew were standing
there. Want to go to a concert tomorrow? Alt J is playing one of them said as they came inside my
house. At first I was confused and caught off guard a little. Perplexed at the situation, I still said
yes. However, this concert

Research Paper On Alice Walker
Alice Walker Essay In life, people care about their appearances and how they are seen in the eyes
of others. Alice Walker cares about how the world portrays her looks and her personality. She is
confident in her looks, but at the age of eight, she is involved in an accident. This accident alteres
not only her eyesight but alters the way she sees herself. Because she believes no one finds her
pretty anymore, she loses confidence within herself. Alice and I have a lot in common when it
comes to this type of situation. I was once in a situation very similar, but it is involving my teeth. An
injury to my jaw made my teeth shift, leading me to believe my smile is not as pretty as it once
was. Eventually, Alice and I both discover the true beauty within our flaws and feel happy once
again. Alice feels beautiful from a very young age.. She is full of herself and wants people to
admire her. When she is eight, her life changes. One of her older brothers shoot her in the eyewith
his BB gun. This causes her go blind in her eye and causes the look of her eye to change. She no
longer feels good about herself. She feels ugly and her ugly feelings causes her to fill with angry
emotions.
At the age of 14, her older brother and his wife take Alice to the hospital to have the scar tissue
and the cataract in her eye removed. She does feel better about herself but she did not feel the
same as when she was younger. Alice doesn t feel as happy as she once did, but her emotions

Attachment Style In Quinceanera
One of the passage is for Latinos the females is to have a Quinceanera to celebrate her big day into
becoming in early adulthood. The Jews have for the males a Bar Mitzvah shows that the boy is now
coming into early adulthood and is ready to become a man. Pluralism is where different religions or
cultures come together in a society and accept different beliefs and cultures. Assimilation is where
different cultures influence one another and become mixed. This has an effect on the rite of
passage on some individuals because they may start to wonder about their culture by learning facts
about other cultures and may not want to be a part of. There are several different attachment styles.
Secure is an attachment style when an individual feels confident and has trust in their relationship.
Avoidant is an attachment style when an individual is unsure about getting into in a relationship.
Anxious attachment style is where individuals demand closeness and have trust issues. I think that
secure is the most effective attachment style in a relationship because this is when you have trust

The first attraction style is physical, people are attracted to how someone looks. Sometimes this
attraction to someone does not last long in a relationship because you find out how the other person
really is. The second type of attraction is personality, when someone finds someone hilarious, nice,
considerate, honest, and caring, they become attracted to them. The third type of attraction is

Results
Between December 2014 and March 2016, 86 consecutive patients with endometriomas were
assessed for eligibility. Forty one patients did not meet inclusion criteria and five patients declined
to participate in the study. Figure 1 illustrates the flow of the patients through the study.
Both groups were comparable as regard to age, body mass index, parity, indications for surgery,

operated. During this time, travel agent fees were going through the roof and reserving an airline
ticket was a complicated, drawn out process. To counter this, Southwest implemented its own
reservation system tailored to their own needs, which also included the industry s first paperless
ticketing system; but this wasn t the end of IT innovation from Southwest Airlines. In 1995,
Southwest.com was launched, and the online ticketing and reservation system was launched in
1996. Soon thereafter, Southwest Airlines ticket sales were primarily coming from their online
reservation system (70%). By the late 90 s, Southwest.com was the most visited airlinewebsite [4].
By the start of the millennium, Southwest airlines had already mastered another IT milestone
which is still in use to this very day: allowing the passenger to print their own boarding vouchers
and allowing passengers to self check in on their own computer even before arriving at the airport
[4]! By implementing these two features on the Southwest website, the airline was able to reduce
the number of customer service agents at check in counters and allowed customers to spend
minimal time waiting at an airport [2]. This increases both passenger and staff efficiency, making
the mundane task of waiting around at an airport virtually a thing of the past.

Blindness James Saramago Analysis
The Opportunity for Change That Hunger Provides
Hunger is a part of the human experience that appears in literature across the globe. People require
daily nourishment, and bond over sharing meals together. The most basic of human needs are those
that are required for physical safety. Without nourishment, a body will die. Entire communities have
been devastated by famines in history. Authors of the 20th century from various countries
understood the significance of finding food to sustain the body. When there is scarcity of food, it
dominates a person s interests over other needs like social and emotional needs. This provides a
window of opportunity in literature. When a character experiences hunger, it strips them down to
their most basic form, as a body needing to survive. Hunger in literature causes people to break
social customs and behave in ways they otherwise would not. As civilized behaviors and customs
are replaced with the desire to survive, characters respond with both great selfishness and
selflessness depending on their inner condition.
A novel that provides many examples of this is Blindness, the 1995 novel by Portuguese author
JosГ© Saramago. The story is set in a city that experiences a bizarre epidemic of blindness the
degrading of civilization that follows quickly after. Those who have been struck with blindness
early on were rounded up into a quarantine and small food portions were provided on schedule.

The 1996 film, Romeo and Juliet, is Baz Luhrmann s interpretation of William Shakespeare s play
by the same name. This film is part of Baz Luhrmann s Red Curtain Trilogy where Luhrmann uses
a theatre motif in each, with poetry and language being the motif used in Romeo and Juliet. This
play was originally written by William Shakespearewho was an English poet, playwright, actor
and a man who is considered one of the greatest contributors to English literature as he invented
over 1700 now common words and wrote some of the world s most famous plays. Romeo and

The costumes used in Luhrmann s film are very modern as using the original Elizabethan style
costumes would make the film more historical and therefore would not appeal to a younger

difference between the two families. For the Montague family, Luhrmann has put the characters in
unbuttoned, bright coloured Hawaiian shirts and given the males short blonde hair to link to these

The Arnolfini Wedding Essay
Jan van Eyck has been one of the more prominent early Netherlandish painters during his time. He
has had many famous works, however one of his more interesting and questionable pieces is The
Arnolfini Portrait. There is much to be desired in this painting by the great van Eyck. Van Eyck has
been a master painter most of his career, but in this paintinghe is able to show how his excellent
painting skills can bring this painting to life. The Arnolfini Portrait, which measures 82 Г— 59.5 cm

It is even speculated that he may have went so far as to use a magnifying glass when working on
these small details to ensure that they were as accurate as possible. This attention to detail has
not only brought the painting to life, but from a researchers point it illustrated just how
important this painting was for van Eyck to paint, and important the Arnolfini wedding may have
been to him. It is said that van Eyck may have included himself in this painting. If you take a
look into the far background reflected in the mirror there is a mysterious man on a turban. This
easter egg inside the painting may have been deliberately placed there for several reasons. Van
Eyck may have wanted the viewer to feel like they were standing with him while he was painting
this image if it was indeed painted on the spot. Or it could simply have been inserted into the scene
of the painting that could be completely fictional.
Van Eyck has precisely placed everything in this painting in certain spots for a reason. He was
very good at leading the viewer s eye in a way that made sense. In this painting the first thing that
van Eyck wanted us to see was the famous mirror in the background so he deliberately placed it
right in the center of the painting. This not only lets you see the whole room but also splits up the
two subjects, Giovanni and his wife. Looking on form the painting to

Analysis Of David Ogilvy s The Consumer Isn t A Moron
Professional Advertiser David Ogilvy
The consumer isn t a moron. She is your wife. A strongly worded quote from David

advertiser and his or her consumer. Ogilvy, like many others, started from the bottom and worked
tirelessly to the top. Born in Oxford,
England on June 23, 1911, David would live the next twenty seven years in and around his

Not long into his career there did he realize the job description did not match his big ideas for
what his life was supposed to be like. David spoke the following words about his kitchen work: If

Community Revitalization As A Research Problem Essay
Research Problem
Community revitalization as a research problem can be an inspiring endeavor. Community
revitalization itself and the change management approaches used can bring about significant
change that can yield extraordinary results to areas for many years to come. The current
community change effort, Impact Lufkin, in Lufkin, TX is an example of this type of work in
action. Beames (2016) states that the Impact Lufkin group was started by the T.L.L. Temple
Foundation and is made up of several other community leaders. Beames (2016) continues that the
goal is to help develop the area that has been neglected by many and help bring services in that
many residents have trouble accessing.
Appreciative inquiry (Ai) has emerged as a method for change management and is a technique that
has garnered much buzz over time. It appears that appreciative inquiry in action, focusing and
analyzing on what is working well in a situation and then multiplying that, as a concept can work
well in community revitalization efforts. Impact Lufkin is an excellent example of this concept in
progress at the moment. Beames (2016) states that the group is being assisted by interns with the
Stephen F. Austin State University School of Social Work. Beames (2016) continues in that the
interns are listening to citizens and are trying to make their vision a reality.
But how exactly does Appreciative inquiry work as a research approach for social work? Bellinger

Asian Financial Crisis Neighboring Countries
Neighbor South Korea dealt with economic uncertainty leading up to the 1997 currency crisis
which plagued Thailand. South Korean chaebols or conglomerates were recording record debt
levels between 1996 and 1997. Banking policies enacted by President, or Dictator, Park during the
late 80 s constructed an economic environment whereby loans to chaebols were issued on the basis
of company need, as opposed to individual judgment on part of the loan issuing authority. In more
succinct terms, nationalized banks issues loans to chaebols without verifying whether the company
could pay the loan bank, or whether the interest rates were reasonable, or even whether the
company s venture had enough collateral to back it up. In essence, chaebols were tasked with
repaying loans that they might not have the appropriate level of capital for. Therefore, on the eve
of the Asian Financial Crisis, chaebols such as Hanbo Steel, and others, were closing their doors
due to debt burdens incurred without a proper foundation for capital generation.

Guernica by Pablo Picasso Essay
Guernica by Pablo Picasso
In 1937, Pablo Picasso painted Guernica, oil on canvas. The Republican Spanish government
commissioned the mural for the 1937 World Fair in Paris. Guernica is a large mural, twenty six
feet wide and eleven feet tall, and was placed at the entrance to Spain s pavilion. Picasso did not do
any work after receiving the commission until reading of the bombing of the Basque village of
Guernica, in Spain. It was that attack, perpetrated by the German Luftwaffe, that inspired him.
Guernica, however, is not a complete depiction of that event. In Guernica, Picasso masterfully
conveys the suffering of the Basque people and the tragedy of war. He seeks not to report on every

At the extreme right, a woman is falling and has not yet hit the ground. Further left, a woman is
picking herself up after falling. The horse in the center is fatally wounded and will soon die. To
the far left, the child in his mother s arms has already died, and so has the warrior whose head rests
at the bottom of the mural. But again, the strong right to left movement arises from the direction in
which the subjects are looking.
Guernica is monochromatic to make its imagery more powerful. Lack of color keeps the viewer
focused on the subject matter at hand, as well as keeping the mural cold, which agrees with its
general theme of injustice in war. Also, Picasso s flat imagery does not distract the viewer from
concentrating on imagery. The viewer is given no other choice than to concentrate on the subject
matter of Guernica and ponder it s meaning. The flat, grayscale images generalize the imagery and
contribute to the general theme of unnecessary suffering and tragedy.
At the extreme right of Picasso s mural, a woman is falling from a burning building. Flames
appear to be spewing from the top of that building. The flames consist triangles with different
values of gray. The same lighttriangles are coming from the woman s dress. Her arms flail
upwards as she falls, and it is her fall that draws the eye downward and moves the viewer through
the work. Below lies the woman picking herself up off the

reasons. First, to help others in need. Secondly, I have not been involved in many community
serviceprojects through Sebs so I wanted to open new doors. This was my first year in the
program and it has definitely has changed my perspective in my life. I made the journey up to the
Paulist center by leaving at 6:45. I thought that on a Saturday morning the commotion outside
Boston would almost be minimum, but I was wrong. There were many people outside walking
around with cars parked everywhere. When I arrived to the Paulist Center I was greeted by Mr.
Eaton at the huge, dark red walls. My classmates and me made our way down to the basement
where the breakfastwould be served. The whole room reminded me of my cafeteria back in
elementary school. The room was desolate. There wasn t a single thing on the ground, like the
tables. In order for the day to be completed, my classmates and I must set up everything needed
for the day through cleaning the breakfest up. Right when I show up my classmates and I start by
rolling the tables out of the chair and placing them on the white and gray floor. After arranging the
tables 4 by 4 across the room, we set up the black chairs, seven at each table. Next, we

Film Summary Of The Movie Wicked
Rehearsals Behind the Scenes: Before the production of Wicked, the dancers and singers practiced
for two years. They had scripture readings and worked together on the choreography of the pieces.
The dancers bonded through their love for the show and joked and laughed during rehearsals. The
documentary stated that the dancers rehearsed up until the night before the first production. I find it
so interesting that throughout the course of two years, there was still work to do the night before
the production. I cannot image how they could work for so long and still make last minute changes
to the performance. Choreography: The choreography for the musical, Wicked, is truly
phenomenal. The dancers use their entire body and isolate their

Human Services And The Legal Justice System Essay
At the beginning of the year looking for classes to take Human Services stood out to me. Although
not really knowing the meaning of human services, I believed it was about helping people and
that s something I have always been very passionate about. I am always the friend who is giving
advice and hearing out my friends dilemmas and situations. The definition of Human services in our
book is: a phrase that is often used to group activities that focus on helping people live better lives.
In a vague way, the human services include formal systems such as government welfare programs,
education, mental retardation services, mental healthorganizations, child care programs, physical
health care establishments, and the correctional services of the legal justice system. The
definition of a human service worker is: Anyone who is trained or educated in helping activities.
A person who does not have traditional professional academic credentials but who, through
experience, training, or education, provides helping services. When this project of interviewing a
human service worker and learning in depth how they do their job, and how they help others it
was something that I was pretty excited about. The process on how I found the human service
corporation I would interview was pretty difficult since all of the ones I was interested at first
were taken. Going through the process to schedule my first interview was not as hard as I sought it
to be. For my first interview I contacted

Power And Power In Arthur Miller s The Crucible
Sometimes people can get lost in their ability to control others, your mom yelling at you to take
out the trash or maybe you pinning your younger sibling down in a wrestling match. It happens
to us all, even if you do not realize. It all comes with our ingrained desire for this thing we call
power. This desire plagues every society, those of the past and present. For example, in the 1960s
an author named Arthur Miller saw his society falling victim to this plague, so he wrote a play.
Miller shows us throughout The Crucible that power and the desire for it is a disease that
spreads in communities and cripples them, we see this through the actions of Abigail, Danforth,
and Parris. Parris is a great example of a ground zero patient, from the start of the play we see
him claw for more and more political and material power. Miller wastes no time showing Parris
concern with his power and how people perceive it. But if you trafficked with the spirits in the
forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it (Miller 10).
Here we see Parris worrying about his ego while his daughter is lying ill on the bed next to him.
This theme continues throughout the play and becomes worse as we get to know him more. His
concern with ego goes hand in hand with our idea of power; with a tainted ego he will lose his
power. His constant concern with these illusory concepts he loses his path and begins to lead others
down it, Like Danforth. Danforth

Often times, we are blinded with the illusion on how Canada is a perfect country with no
wrongdoings, when the truth is, we are just as bad as any other country on the topic of racism.
The wrongdoings and crimes against the Japanese Canadians in Canada are one of those
examples. Although we do learn about them briefly in school, Obasan gives a new perspective
on how a Japanese Canadian received this treatment for non Japanese Canadians in their time
and her perspective on it. We learn of her and her family s hardships that they had to face after
the bombing of Pearl Harbour, in one part, one of her aunts even says The American Japanese

Comparing Apple Vs Apple
The smartphone industry is a very up and coming place. In the US, more than 77% of adults own a
smartphone (Smith). There are many different kinds of smartphones. They can vary in shape, size,
color, and brand. Two of the largest brands of smartphone are Samsung and Apple. They make two
of the hottest phones on the market right now. Just recently Samsung made the Galaxy S8, and
Apple came out with the iPhone8. Both phones are reported to be top of the line. Both being high
end devices have many similarities, but they also have differences that set them far apart from
each other. Let s start off with one big difference between these two phones, the camera. We re
again treated to a solitary 12 megapixel f/1.8 rear snapper... The Galaxy S8 comes with a 12
megapixel Dual Pixelrear camera (Spendelow). The difference between the cameras here is that
the Galaxy has a dual camera, whereas the iPhone does not. The iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X
do have the dual camera if you re willing to spend the extra money. These two phones also have
different camera resolution. The Galaxy s camera resolution is 2960 x 1440 pixels, and the
iPhones is 1334 x 750 pixels (Bushnell). Between the two phones camera resolution, the Galaxy
has the iPhone beat. The Samsung s front facing camera is also a little bit better than the iPhone
s. The iPhone s camera is 7 megapixels whereas the Samsungs is 8 megapixels (Kidman).
However, the iPhone has reportedly been seen with warmer colors, helping with the contrast of
pictures. Overall, the Samsung s dual rear camera and 8 megapixels front facing camera has the
iPhone beat. Another big difference between the two phones is the hardware and internal specs.
One main difference between these two phones is the two kinds of operating systems they use.
Samsung uses Android 7.1.1, and the iPhone uses iOS 11. Two separate systems tailored to the
devices needs. They both are top of the line operating systems and are the most up to date
systems you can use (Kidman). Both operating systems are fine tuned to the use of the consumer
and are both extremely customizable. The iPhone Has a 2GB RAM and uses the A11 Bionic
processor, and the Galaxy has a 4GB RAM and uses the octa core Exynos 8895 processor

Social Impacts Of The American Revolution
The American Revolution was caused from multiple issues in the way Great Britain forced the
colonies to live under the Kings rule and not their own colonial government. The colonist came
over to the new world in search of freedom and new beginnings. It created the beginning of the
United States of America. It changed a lot of people s lives and the way they live. The
Revolution influenced the lives of women in America. During this period of time women were
inferior of men. Women were not recognized by the law to have independence in economic,
political, or civic matters. Women who strived for a role in politics faced harsh legal and
ideological obstacles. The ideology of republicanism argued that the traits of independence, aptitude,
physical strength, and bravery were masculine. Many women participated in the protests and
boycotts leading up to the Revolutionary War. During the war, the women took over the male s
role in the family and around the house for example manage the farms and businesses. After the
war, women were able to participate in numerous things such as walk in parades, attend congress
sessions, participate in political rallies, and petition legislation. By the end of the eighteenth
century, politics had little room for women to express their views. Women took advantage of better
educational opportunities and found ways to influence the public on their political rights. Many
women came out of the revolution with a political importance and a sense of

Per Anthony Mullen (2016) in group dynamics, norming is part of the group counseling stage
where problems are solved, and group members began to understand the group and respect the
group leader. Using identification and hope in a domestic violence group can have a positive
change on peer relationships within the group(Gladding, 2016). Identification occurs when group
members can relate to another member and hope is thoughts that the future and possibilities will
be better (Gladding, 2016). In a group setting, identification is essential to have cohesion among
the members (Gladding, 2016). Moreover, I believe that if I know others in the group share my

Its only the past hundred and fifty years or so that attempts have been made to put racism on a
scientific footing, before that discriminatory practices were usually justified or condemned on
religious beliefs, whites were seen as the offspring of Adam and Eve which in tern were classed as

The roots of racial division lie within the expansion of the European empire during the eighteenth

which is when the occupation of India, Pakistan and large parts of Africa along with several
islands in the West Indies took place. The exploitation of Africans (mainly West Africans) was a
key factor in laying the foundations for the future racial conflict. Slave traders were mainly from
Britain, Spain, France and Portugal; they kidnapped Africans and transported them to the southern

Killer Immunoglobulin-Like Receptor Essay
1 Introduction The target of this research is to look at the frequency of a receptor a killer
immunoglobulin like receptor (KIR) present on the surface of natural killer (NK) cells a key
component of the innate immune system. This will begin by briefly discussing the innate
immunity, NK cells, KIRs and their implications.
1.1 Innate Immunity The human immune system can be divided into two categories the adaptive
immune system and innate immune system, however these two systems work in conjunction to
form the immune response. The innate immune system also can be referred to as the non specific
immune system and the first line of defence. As the name suggests the innate immune system is
non specific and recognition and response to pathogens are generic. This system does not confer
memory or long lasting protection from pathogens. The task of this system is to provide instant
defence against pathogens which are present throughout individual s life s and can be found across
other animals and plants. The defence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
while the second line of defences or secondary defences as they are known, consists of cellular
and soluble factors to stop pathogens causing infections. The secondary defences can be divided
up further into cellular factors consisting of macrophages and neutrophils which are phagocytic
by nature (Galli, Borregaard, Wynn, 2011). The final cellular component are cytotoxic cells, NK
cells and will be the focus of this research and discussed in greater detail in section 1.2.0. NK cells
are a class of cytotoxic lymphocyte which protects the body from virally infected and cancerous
cells. These cells can induce cell death by delivering cytotoxic granules and receptor mediated
mechanisms, while also producing cytokines that aid in stimulating the immune cell functions seen
in the soluble factors of the secondary defences (Caligiuri,

Queer Representation Of All Age Media Essay
Queer Representation in All Age Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the
90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in
the media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it
was usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle s close friend each holiday)
or as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school).
This reflected exactly how homosexualitywas portrayed in media at the time. Queercharacters and
homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, blink and you ll miss it labels and
affectations, or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still
regularly reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and play video games, it is so
exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all age
media. In this paper I hope to detail the highs and lows of LGBTQ representation in all age media
and highlight the positive and negative impact of media representation. Before we can look
forward, we must look back at queer representation of the past. The late film scholar Vito Russo
painstakingly researched the evolution of queer representation in cinema in his landmark book The
Celluloid Closet. In both the book and its documentary of the same name, Russo details the earliest
portrayal of homosexuality in

Analysis Of Holden Caulfield Bildungsroman
Is this novel really a bildungsroman? The Catcher in the Rye by JD the Salinger is a novel that
many consider a bildungsroman, A story with the character grows amateurs. However, for 17
year old Holden Caulfield this is not the case. Holden shows no urge to want to enter adulthood
as he constantly lies about the smallest things, escapes the real world through fantasy and makes
no effort to turn his life around. Holden seems to always feel like he has to create a reality for
himself which makes him a phony, rather than tell the truth and live his own. When Holden meets

Those who disagree might state that Holden matured when he claims I m standing on the edge

position. However, while Holden is at the carousel with Phoebe he notices children trying to grab

Consumerism And Consumerism
Consumerism is deeply embedded in our culture and heavily influences our day to day behavior
and interactions with others. Examples of consumerism include the fashion industry, our
obsession with getting the newest technology, and why we purchase a certain type of car. The
downside with our obsession of constant buying is that there are so many negative side effects
that impact the environment, worker s lives (working conditions, low wages, poor living
conditions) and our own relationships with our families, coworkers and friends. There is a lot
of evidence of these side effects, and yet we keep buying into this cycle. We should know better,
and yet it seems like it will be very hard to get us to change our habits. The works of Richard
Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, Phillip Bauman, Julia Pugh in, and Pierre Bourdieu in attempt to
explain why we continue to practice consumerist focused lifestyles. In The Spirit Level by
Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, their focus is on the relationship between consumerism
and climate change. Pickett and Wilkinson state that the inequality between classes in society
increases the cultural pressure to consume more and more, or to consume competitively. This is
because we are afraid of looking like we are second class or less than we are, and are afraid of
losing our place in society. In this way our obsessive buying habits have become a defense
mechanism against falling out of our hard earned place. As the inequality grows and the
distinctions between classes becomes ever clearer, we have to work harder in order to keep
buying and consuming to stay on top. Because we are spending more, we are saving less and
borrowing more, one statistic in the book states that, in 1998 even though the American
economy was booming...one family in sixty eight had filed for bankruptcy. (p. 227). In this way
consumerism becomes a vicious cycle that is incredibly hard to get out of because there are very
few other options. This is all because of how social we are, and how important it is to fit in with
those around us. In Liquid Life by Zygmunt Bauman, he explains our need for consumption
because of the way society progresses in what he calls a liquid modern society. He describes liquid

The Effects of Issues and Personality on Leader Evaluations
Looking at data form the 2011 Canadian Election Study, this essay discusses the impact that
leader traits and issues opinions have on evaluations of the three major party leaders. Bases on
previous research, we expected to find that traits would have the largest impacts on leader
evaluations, while issues would also have an impact, but a smaller one. Also based on previous
research we expected that while there would be issues impacting the leader evaluations, the issues
that mattered would vary between leaders. Using three multivariate regression models, we

The Michigan School model, instead, examines three key factors: party identification, candidate
evaluations and policy issue positions. More recent theories have sought to combine these two
models using a metaphorical funnel of causality (Lewis Beck et al. 2008). In this model, long
term factors, such as socio demographics and partisanship are placed closer to the opening of the
funnel, and as we move deeper into the funnel, we come to factors that are less stable and more
likely to vary as the election approaches, such as issues and candidates.
While the funnel of causality provides a better picture of the factors that affect voting, the
Multistage Model provides the best picture of vote choice. While both the multistage models and
the funnel of causality organize factors based on their proximity to the vote choice, taking into
consideration more stable and variable effects, the multistage model goes one step further by
explicitly representing the linkages between factors (Gidengil et al. 2012). Based on this
understanding, it is clear that while factors like issues and candidate evaluations effect your vote
choice, they also have an effect on each other.
In this paper, we will be examining the effects that one of these variables, issues, has on a second,
candidate evaluations. Previous research (Belanger and Meguid 2008) has found that issue
ownership and issue salience both have effects on vote choice. Voters are more

Gay Adoption Should be Legalized Essay
Gay adoption by legal couples has become a rising controversy in the past decade, affecting the
lives of many children and families. Most states allow gays and lesbians to individually adopt but
do not allow them adoption as a legally recognized couple. In 1976, the American Psychological
Association declared that the sex, gender identity, or sexual... orientation of natural, or prospective

Utah has also successfully approached the idea of banning by allowing only married couples to
adopt (Hopkins). As a result, countless children are left among foster and adoption agencies.
With thousands of children anticipating adoption, allowing same sex couples to adopt would
decrease these waiting numbers by providing stable homes and families. Excluding gays and
lesbians from the prospective resource parent pool will in turn eliminate thousands of children from
being provided a permanent home (Sioco). The Children Bureau s Trends in Foster Care and
Adoption report completed in 2008 showed that there were 130,000 children waiting to be adopted.
These results were defined as those children with a goal of adoption and those whose parental
rights were terminated (Sioco).
In addition to children feeling the repercussions of banned gay adoption, the couples who desire
children are also negatively affected. There are countless homosexual couples that would like to
complete their family by adopting one or more children of their own (see Fig. 2 below).
Unfortunately, this is being completed through loopholes rather than the legal process in order to
develop their family, such as one parent adopting the child rather than the couple. Federal law does
not yet recognize gay marriage, leaving rights to be determined at the state level, often resulting in
them varying greatly.

Medea And Agamemnon Research Paper
The Greek tragedies Medea by Euripides and Agamemnon share similar character traits displayed
through Medea and Clytemnestra which ultimately lead to their own downfall. Clytemnestra
slaughtered her own husband and his foreign concubine seeing vengeance towards her husband
Agamemnon for sacrificing their daughter. Medeapoisoned King Creon, a princess, and murdered
her own children to seek justifiable revenge against Jason; her husband. Both women are seen to
resemble strength and power. The two women portray a behavior unlike any other woman of their
time period which ultimately leads to their downfall. The two plays both exemplify similar
characteristics such as the role of women, passion/power, and vengeance.
It is known that the role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is seen acting out on justifiable revenge against her husband, Agamemnon. As seen in
Medea, the drive to accomplish a task once the goal is set, Clytemnestra possesses the same
qualities here ...my mind never sleeps, and with the help of the gods I will set things right (912
913). After Agamemnon sacrificed their daughter, Iphigenia; it was only right for Clytemnestra
to seek justice for the heinous act. By the child s Rights I brought to birth...I sacrifice this man
(1459 1461). For the sake of Iphigenia, Clytemnestra it is only right to serve justice upon her
daughters behalf and feels she treated her husband the same way he did his deities. Clytemnestra
is a very deceptive character. She despises being regarded or treated as a woman, yet is able to
make advancements using her femininity. She is known as the woman [that] maneuvers like a man
(13). Men were known to fear women who embodied masculine tendencies. The traits were
regarded as unnatural during the ancient times. Clytemnestra was enraged about the fact she did
not have the same regard as men. This put her on the edge to deny her femininity and overcome
the men that surround her in order to gain masculine powers. Medea, on the other hand accepted
that she was indeed a woman, but crossed the line of her feminine limitations set by ancient Greek
times. She did this to prove she possessed more

Roger Chillingworth In The Scarlet Letter
Altered by sin in The Scarlet Letter, evil, obsessive, and manipulative are what describe Roger
Chillingworth. From the beginning, Roger is an enigmatic yet intriguing character, knowledgeable
in medicine from his time in captivity, as well as unbeknownst to others except for the audience the
wife of Hester Prynne. Becoming eviler as the story goes on, Roger s complexion is only
matched by the devil himself, with his only goal being to pursue Dimmesdale for his (and
Hester s) act of sin. Roger stays for seven years, becoming obsessed about Dimmesdale s
suffering and pain, like a leech. His dependency proves to be his downfall, as when Dimmesdale
accepts his sin to be a part of him, Roger s life is now without purpose. These chain of events
leads to the idea that Roger Chillingworth s act of sin (revenge), as well as Hester and Dimmesdale
s act of sin (passion) influence his character development and outcome greatly in The Scarlet Letter,
as he becomes psychologically more manipulative, evil, and obsessive, and physically more
sinister looking. In Puritan society, it proves someone else s sin can make another one twisted and
evil, as... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This suggests how in a Puritan society, one s sin can negatively transform another, and in today
s society, how being evil and obsessive can lead to one s end. Roger s mind and demeanor are
made demented and sinister, with him only thinking about revenge towards Dimmesdale
because of his and Hester s sin, giving way to the idea one s sin can lead to another s sin. Roger
constantly obsesses over a sin of revenge, which proves to be his downfall when Dimmesdale
reveals himself to everybody at the end, disclosing the idea that obsessiveness and evility can lead
to one s

Heritage Cooperative Case Study
Introduction I had the pleasure of working for Heritage Cooperative Inc during the summer of
2015. Heritage Cooperative is a farmers cooperative that offers its customers a variety of
products and services. The four main branches are agronomy, feed, energy, and grain. Some of
the services customers can receive are crop advantage, cattlemen s edge, ice melt, lawn fertilizer,
show supplies, tire services, and there in house seed Shur Grow. Heritage Cooperative is focused
on giving the best products and services to its customers to meet there needs. As a crop advantage
field tech I worked under the agronomy portion of the company. The branch I was stationed at in
Upper Sandusky was focused on helping growers get the most out of their crops and to provide
customers with any needs they may have. The agronomy portion of the company offers 3 main
services which are crop nutrients, crop protection, and crop advantage. All of these are critical in

Cultural Intelligence Of The United States And Italy
Globalization has made it paramount for businesses and individuals that want to venture into a
different country to have cultural intelligence of that country. Cultural intelligence is defined as
capability to successfully adapt to new cultural environments and unfamiliar settings attributable to
cultural context (Earley, Ang, and Tan 2006). Obtaining cultural knowledge allows business
relationships to flourish, provides feasibility and sustainability for the business. It also shows
cultural sensitivity, which is important when trying to win over locals of a specific area.
The United States and Italy
The United States and Italy are both advanced industrial countries, yet they differ in many areas
including culture and how business is conducted. The United States has very little cultural
influence on Italy; in fact it is the opposite. The element of diversity is deep within the United
States that it has become a melting pot filled with an array of music, food, language, and many
other customs that are not native. The relationship between the two countries has seen its adversity
but they have created a strong bilateral relationship which aids in strengthening the economy of
both countries. In the 2013 Italy United States Summit then Ambassador David Thorne stated
Globalization is the disruptive force, in both a positive and negative sense, that is challenging both
of our countries today and it is reshaping our traditional ways of thinking about the world. As

Location Of Statcom For Power Flow Control
Location of STATCOM for Power Flow Control Dr..Neelakantappa, Narasapur, Hyderabad.,India
Dr.AmjanShaik Narasapur, Hyderabad.,India ABSTRACT: Power flow control in a long
transmission line plays a vital role in electrical power system. This paper uses the shunt
connected STATCOM for the control of voltage and power flow. The proposed device is used in
different locations such as sending end, middle and receiving end of the transmission line. The
PWM control is used to generate the firing pulses of the controller circuit. Simulation modeling
of the system is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Based on a voltage source converter,
the STATCOM regulates system voltage by absorbing or generating reactive power. This paper
deals with a cascaded multilevel converter model, which is a 48 pulse (three levels) GTO
converter. The simulation studies are carried for sending end, middle and receiving end of the
transmission line. The objective is to define the reactive power generated and voltage control at
different locations (at sending end, middle, receiving end) of transmission line using STATCOM.
KEYWORDS: FACTS device, STATCOM, SVC, PWM, MATLAB /Simulink. I.
INTRODUCTION: The power system is an interconnection of generating units to load centres
through high voltage electric transmission lines and in general is mechanically controlled. It can be
divided into three subsystems: generation, transmission and distribution subsystems. In order to
provide cheaper electricity the

Effect Of Negative Feedback Loop On Pulse
Regardless of if a person is at rest or if they are doing a vigorous workout, the body still undergoes
physiological changes to try and sustain a homeostatic state. Although we were unable to attain
blood pressures in this experiment we were able to track the changes in our pulse due to different
positions and exercise. The mechanism responsible for this change is a negative feedbackloop. A
negative feed back loop is a pathway in which the variable is stabilized and is composed of an
initial stimulus, a response and a stimulus that shuts off the response loop. A negative feedback
loop s responds to the changes in heartrate by trying to get the body back to a normal set point for
pulse. If there were no negative feedback loops the body would have a hard time regulating its
physiological fluctuations.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The supine position caused me to relax and my pulse to decrease, but when I began to exercise it
increased. Both of these actions took my pulse away from its normal range. The response was
how I reacted to it. When in the supine position my pulse decreased because gravity was taking
over the job of getting blood to my limbs, but it increased during my jog because my heart had to
pump harder to distribute my oxygenated blood to my muscle tissue. By the second time I went
up the stairs, my pulse had increased to 126, which was lower than the first pulse of 148. This
happened because my set point was at a higher range, similar to a thermostat and I required less
oxygen allowing me to return to a homeostatic state easier. I m sure that if we had checked our
blood pressure we would have seen the same

Ransom By David Malouf Analysis
Grief can play with one s mind twisting and manipulating one to not be the same person they
used to be, while grief can also change one for the better. In the book, Ransom, by David
Malouf, Hector kills Achilles friend, Patroclus, so Achilles kills Hector. Priam wants to see his
son one last time so he makes a plan to get to him. Somax takes Priam on a carriage to go find his
son Hector. They have some troubles along the way, but they eventually get to Priam s son. Priam
brings Hector back to Troy and Hector is buried. In Ransom by David Malouf, the author teaches
the reader the power of grief through the experiences of Priam and Achilles. Grief can be a
controlling force, it can cause and individual to change as a person, and grief can strongly
influence one s actions. The sorrow from the loss of a loved can be burdensome and can take a
toll on one and their family. Priam explains to Hecuba, It is eleven days now since Hector s death
and we have done nothing, all of us, but weep and sit stunned with grief (Malouf 50). Priam s
family is depressed over the loss of their son Hector. It controls their emotions and the way they
think of their life now, moving on without Hector. While Priam is talking with Deiphobus, Priam
lowers his head. When he raises it again his look is grave but his eyes, for all the power of
emotion in him are dry (Malouf 84). Priam is having a difficult time coming to terms that Hector is
actually gone, so he is overcome with multiple emotions.

Isolation And Social Isolation
Canada s aging population is growing. One of the number one emerging issue facing seniors is
social isolation. Statistics Canada s 2008/09 Canadian Community Health Survey found that 19%
of individuals aged 65 or over felt a lack of companionship, left out, or isolated from others
(National Seniors Council, 2014). Social isolation is not the same as loneliness. It is a form of
emotion that makes people depression. Social isolation impacts on seniors quality of life, mental
and physical health. To reduce the social isolation is the way seniors are connected socially. For
example, there are exercise programs and communityengaged art programs for the elderly in the
community. This programis effective for seniors physical and mental health. Although such
programs have beneficial effects on seniors health, some studies argue that there are barriers to
reducing the social isolation of older people in such programs. Community programs and
community participation programs benefit from the seniors physical, emotional and social well
being. The purpose of the Community exercise program is a socialization based exercise program
to improve the seniors health. Community arts programs aim to promote optimal health for seniors.
However, it is difficult to reduce the social isolation without using these objectives potentially.
Community exercise program In British Columbia, many central cities are implementing

  • 2. Summary Of Nacirema Looking back at the article Nacirema, I feel my daily routines are weird and tradition as a Chinese. After reading the article Nacirema, it shows that the belief of American think their culture is superior to others, they tendency to view other cultures from their own views. Some of the traditional culture, maybe looks weird in another people s eye. For example, as a Chinese, we eat chicken feet, duck feet, and chicken viscera which American people don t like it. We like to have a morning tea with family to eat dimsum, deep dried dough sticks, steamed buns, tofu pudding, noodles, and rice for breakfast, but the American people like to have some coffee, milk, eggs, fired potatoes, cereal, toast, and pancake. • 3. Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism Essay Jude the Obscure and Social Darwinism Jude the Obscure is indeed a lesson in cruelty and despair; the inevitable by products of Social Darwinism. The main characters of the book are controlled by fate s compelling arm of extraordinary muscular power (1), weakly resisting the influence of their own sexuality, and of society and nature around them. Jude s world is one in which only the fittest survive, and he is clearly not equipped to number amongst the fittest. In keeping with the strong Darwinian undercurrents that run through the book, a kind of natural selection ensures that Jude s offspring do not survive to procreate either. Their death by murder and suicide is but one of many grisly instances of cruelty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not like our poor boy here. (3) Although the Widow Edlin s words refer to Jude s physical status, Hardy is also using them to comment on Jude as a societal and intellectual being. On that level too, he was clearly not fit enough to emerge triumphantly from the struggles of Darwinian society. If Hardy s message is that only the fittest can escape nature and society s cruelties, then one must ask, which of the characters in the novel is most successful in the competitive atmosphere? Phillotson certainly achieves some measure of professional success as a schoolmaster, but like Jude, he too was unable to break into the echelons of university academia. Furthermore, despite marrying Sue, his union with her was less than successful. One gets the sense that in his one sided love for Sue, Phillotson was swept along powerlessly by the tides of his own sexuality just as Jude was. Rather than pro actively seeking to cultivate Sue s love for him or to gain some form of self determination, he chose to remain meek and impassive, very much allowing Sue to determine the course that his life with her would take, if it was to be with her at all. Is Sue then the prime candidate for social fitness in the work? Sue herself fought against the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Issue Of Legalizing Gambling INTRODUCTION Casinos are all throughout the country, but are they a positive influence for our society? Our economy? There are people on all sides of this issue; some people have difficulty determining the reasons behind legalizing gambling in the first place. In a panel data analysis done by Doug Walker and John Jackson, gambling is legalized to offer other opportunities for states to increase revenue (Walker and Jackson 1). This explains why legalizing gambling is important to state governments, saying states need different revenue options and that gambling would help with an increase in revenue for the states. Other people on this issue wonder if casinos can be consistently relied upon for state revenue. According to Forbes, the casino industry in Las Vegas has been decreasing because of the recession from 2007 2009. Outside of the United States, the industry has increased over the past few years (Forbes). This indicates that the casino business isn t as big as it was before the recession. This has big implications on state revenues and budgeting. Global Gaming Business Magazine is along those lines, saying two casinos in Atlantic City are empty; not enough supply of casinos for the demand (Global Gaming Business Magazine). The recession has made significant impacts on the industry and the industry can t keep up. And states need to be aware of these issues so they don t make the same mistakes as Atlantic City. While they increased economic development, Atlantic City did ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Such a broad question brings up many notable moments from an already large selection. If I could pick one that makes me smile every time I look back onto it. It would be the first concert I ever went to. It was not only my first time hearing my favorite band live, but it was also my first time listening to live music. On top of the already intense experience, I had learned something very important that day. Through the generosity of a very kind woman, I was able to experience my very first concert. I learned that Generosity pushes beyond simple gestures and acts of kindness. It can leave a lasting impression on any person, changing them for the better. Since then, reflecting on all the moments that still bring many laughs and memories I made that day only assured me that I would remember it forever. Fatefully, on a Friday night, the day before the concert, I was currently on the computer at my house. I received a text around seven o clock at night. One of my friends had texted me, saying that they were outside my house. As I went to the door, I saw that my friend, along with five other people I knew were standing there. To counter this, Southwest implemented its own reservation system tailored to their own needs, which also included the industry s first paperless ticketing system; but this wasn t the end of IT innovation from Southwest Airlines. In 1995, Southwest.com was launched, and the online ticketing and reservation system was launched in 1996. Soon thereafter, Southwest Airlines ticket sales were primarily coming from their online reservation system (70%). By the late 90 s, Southwest.com was the most visited airlinewebsite [4]. By the start of the millennium, Southwest airlines had already mastered another IT milestone which is still in use to this very day: allowing the passenger to print their own boarding vouchers and allowing passengers to self check in on their own computer even before arriving at the airport [4]! By implementing these two features on the Southwest website, the airline was able to reduce the number of customer service agents at check in counters and allowed customers to spend minimal time waiting at an airport [2]. This increases both passenger and staff efficiency, making the mundane task of waiting around at an airport virtually a thing of the past. • 12. Blindness James Saramago Analysis The Opportunity for Change That Hunger Provides Hunger is a part of the human experience that appears in literature across the globe. People require daily nourishment, and bond over sharing meals together. The most basic of human needs are those that are required for physical safety. Without nourishment, a body will die. Entire communities have been devastated by famines in history. Authors of the 20th century from various countries understood the significance of finding food to sustain the body. When there is scarcity of food, it dominates a person s interests over other needs like social and emotional needs. This provides a window of opportunity in literature. When a character experiences hunger, it strips them down to their most basic form, as a body needing to survive. Hunger in literature causes people to break social customs and behave in ways they otherwise would not. As civilized behaviors and customs are replaced with the desire to survive, characters respond with both great selfishness and selflessness depending on their inner condition. A novel that provides many examples of this is Blindness, the 1995 novel by Portuguese author JosГ© Saramago. The story is set in a city that experiences a bizarre epidemic of blindness the degrading of civilization that follows quickly after. It is said that van Eyck may have included himself in this painting. If you take a look into the far background reflected in the mirror there is a mysterious man on a turban. This easter egg inside the painting may have been deliberately placed there for several reasons. Van Eyck may have wanted the viewer to feel like they were standing with him while he was painting this image if it was indeed painted on the spot. Or it could simply have been inserted into the scene of the painting that could be completely fictional. Van Eyck has precisely placed everything in this painting in certain spots for a reason. He was very good at leading the viewer s eye in a way that made sense. In this painting the first thing that van Eyck wanted us to see was the famous mirror in the background so he deliberately placed it right in the center of the painting. Community revitalization itself and the change management approaches used can bring about significant change that can yield extraordinary results to areas for many years to come. Beames (2016) continues that the goal is to help develop the area that has been neglected by many and help bring services in that many residents have trouble accessing. Appreciative inquiry (Ai) has emerged as a method for change management and is a technique that has garnered much buzz over time. South Korean chaebols or conglomerates were recording record debt levels between 1996 and 1997. Banking policies enacted by President, or Dictator, Park during the late 80 s constructed an economic environment whereby loans to chaebols were issued on the basis of company need, as opposed to individual judgment on part of the loan issuing authority. In more succinct terms, nationalized banks issues loans to chaebols without verifying whether the company could pay the loan bank, or whether the interest rates were reasonable, or even whether the company s venture had enough collateral to back it up. In essence, chaebols were tasked with repaying loans that they might not have the appropriate level of capital for. Therefore, on the eve of the Asian Financial Crisis, chaebols such as Hanbo Steel, and others, were closing their doors due to debt burdens incurred without a proper foundation for capital generation. The Republican Spanish government commissioned the mural for the 1937 World Fair in Paris. Picasso did not do any work after receiving the commission until reading of the bombing of the Basque village of Guernica, in Spain. It was that attack, perpetrated by the German Luftwaffe, that inspired him. Guernica, however, is not a complete depiction of that event. But again, the strong right to left movement arises from the direction in which the subjects are looking. Guernica is monochromatic to make its imagery more powerful. Lack of color keeps the viewer focused on the subject matter at hand, as well as keeping the mural cold, which agrees with its general theme of injustice in war. Also, Picasso s flat imagery does not distract the viewer from concentrating on imagery. The viewer is given no other choice than to concentrate on the subject matter of Guernica and ponder it s meaning. The flat, grayscale images generalize the imagery and contribute to the general theme of unnecessary suffering and tragedy. At the extreme right of Picasso s mural, a woman is falling from a burning building. Flames appear to be spewing from the top of that building. The flames consist triangles with different values of gray. The same lighttriangles are coming from the woman s dress. Every third Saturday of the month the organization sets up breakfast for the homeless people around the Boston area. I decided to volunteer in the community service for two main reasons. First, to help others in need. Secondly, I have not been involved in many community serviceprojects through Sebs so I wanted to open new doors. This was my first year in the program and it has definitely has changed my perspective in my life. I made the journey up to the Paulist center by leaving at 6:45. I thought that on a Saturday morning the commotion outside Boston would almost be minimum, but I was wrong. There were many people outside walking around with cars parked everywhere. When I arrived to the Paulist Center I was greeted by Mr. Eaton at the huge, dark red walls. My classmates and me made our way down to the basement where the breakfastwould be served. The whole room reminded me of my cafeteria back in elementary school. The room was desolate. There wasn t a single thing on the ground, like the tables. In order for the day to be completed, my classmates and I must set up everything needed for the day through cleaning the breakfest up. Although not really knowing the meaning of human services, I believed it was about helping people and that s something I have always been very passionate about. I am always the friend who is giving advice and hearing out my friends dilemmas and situations. The definition of Human services in our book is: a phrase that is often used to group activities that focus on helping people live better lives. In a vague way, the human services include formal systems such as government welfare programs, education, mental retardation services, mental healthorganizations, child care programs, physical health care establishments, and the correctional services of the legal justice system. The definition of a human service worker is: Anyone who is trained or educated in helping activities. A person who does not have traditional professional academic credentials but who, through experience, training, or education, provides helping services. Power And Power In Arthur Miller s The Crucible Sometimes people can get lost in their ability to control others, your mom yelling at you to take out the trash or maybe you pinning your younger sibling down in a wrestling match. It happens to us all, even if you do not realize. It all comes with our ingrained desire for this thing we call power. This desire plagues every society, those of the past and present. For example, in the 1960s an author named Arthur Miller saw his society falling victim to this plague, so he wrote a play. Miller shows us throughout The Crucible that power and the desire for it is a disease that spreads in communities and cripples them, we see this through the actions of Abigail, Danforth, and Parris. Parris is a great example of a ground zero patient, from the start of the play we see him claw for more and more political and material power. Miller wastes no time showing Parris concern with his power and how people perceive it. But if you trafficked with the spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it (Miller 10). Here we see Parris worrying about his ego while his daughter is lying ill on the bed next to him. This theme continues throughout the play and becomes worse as we get to know him more. His concern with ego goes hand in hand with our idea of power; with a tainted ego he will lose his power. His constant concern with these illusory concepts he loses his path and begins to lead others down it, Like Danforth. Danforth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Revolution influenced the lives of women in America. During this period of time women were inferior of men. The ideology of republicanism argued that the traits of independence, aptitude, physical strength, and bravery were masculine. Many women participated in the protests and boycotts leading up to the Revolutionary War. During the war, the women took over the male s role in the family and around the house for example manage the farms and businesses. After the war, women were able to participate in numerous things such as walk in parades, attend congress sessions, participate in political rallies, and petition legislation. The innate immune system also can be referred to as the non specific immune system and the first line of defence. As the name suggests the innate immune system is non specific and recognition and response to pathogens are generic. This system does not confer memory or long lasting protection from pathogens. Queer Representation Of All Age Media Essay Queer Representation in All Age Media Growing up as a Catholic, Puerto Rican gay boy in the 90s and early 2000s, I struggled to discover my queer identity as well as queer representation in the media I consumed. Being gay was something that was never discussed. If it was brought up, it was usually in hushed tones (I remember being introduced to my uncle s close friend each holiday) or as something negative (I still remember the sting of being called a faggot in elementary school). This reflected exactly how homosexualitywas portrayed in media at the time. Queercharacters and homosexuality were at best portrayed in codified, blink and you ll miss it labels and affectations, or at worst, something to laugh at, pity or even hate. As someone who still regularly reads comics, watches Saturday morning cartoons and play video games, it is so exciting to discover the lengths of progress that has been made in queer representation in all age media. • 39. Consumerism And Consumerism Consumerism is deeply embedded in our culture and heavily influences our day to day behavior and interactions with others. Examples of consumerism include the fashion industry, our obsession with getting the newest technology, and why we purchase a certain type of car. The downside with our obsession of constant buying is that there are so many negative side effects that impact the environment, worker s lives (working conditions, low wages, poor living conditions) and our own relationships with our families, coworkers and friends. There is a lot of evidence of these side effects, and yet we keep buying into this cycle. We should know better, and yet it seems like it will be very hard to get us to change our habits. The works of Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, Phillip Bauman, Julia Pugh in, and Pierre Bourdieu in attempt to explain why we continue to practice consumerist focused lifestyles. In The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, their focus is on the relationship between consumerism and climate change. Pickett and Wilkinson state that the inequality between classes in society increases the cultural pressure to consume more and more, or to consume competitively. This is because we are afraid of looking like we are second class or less than we are, and are afraid of losing our place in society. In this way our obsessive buying habits have become a defense mechanism against falling out of our hard earned place. As the inequality grows and the distinctions between classes becomes ever clearer, we have to work harder in order to keep buying and consuming to stay on top. Because we are spending more, we are saving less and borrowing more, one statistic in the book states that, in 1998 even though the American economy was booming...one family in sixty eight had filed for bankruptcy. (p. 227). In this way consumerism becomes a vicious cycle that is incredibly hard to get out of because there are very few other options. This is all because of how social we are, and how important it is to fit in with those around us. In Liquid Life by Zygmunt Bauman, he explains our need for consumption because of the way society progresses in what he calls a liquid modern society. He describes liquid ... More recent theories have sought to combine these two models using a metaphorical funnel of causality (Lewis Beck et al. 2008). In this model, long term factors, such as socio demographics and partisanship are placed closer to the opening of the funnel, and as we move deeper into the funnel, we come to factors that are less stable and more likely to vary as the election approaches, such as issues and candidates. While the funnel of causality provides a better picture of the factors that affect voting, the Multistage Model provides the best picture of vote choice. While both the multistage models and the funnel of causality organize factors based on their proximity to the vote choice, taking into consideration more stable and variable effects, the multistage model goes one step further by explicitly representing the linkages between factors (Gidengil et al. 2012). Based on this understanding, it is clear that while factors like issues and candidate evaluations effect your vote choice, they also have an effect on each other. • 43. Gay Adoption Should be Legalized Essay Gay adoption by legal couples has become a rising controversy in the past decade, affecting the lives of many children and families. Most states allow gays and lesbians to individually adopt but do not allow them adoption as a legally recognized couple. In 1976, the American Psychological Association declared that the sex, gender identity, or sexual... orientation of natural, or prospective adoptive or foster parents should not be the sole or primary variable considered in custody or placement cases. Historically, the benefits of gay adoptionhave been recognized, but have not yet been legalized. Utah has also successfully approached the idea of banning by allowing only married couples to adopt (Hopkins). As a result, countless children are left among foster and adoption agencies. With thousands of children anticipating adoption, allowing same sex couples to adopt would decrease these waiting numbers by providing stable homes and families. Excluding gays and lesbians from the prospective resource parent pool will in turn eliminate thousands of children from being provided a permanent home (Sioco). The Children Bureau s Trends in Foster Care and Adoption report completed in 2008 showed that there were 130,000 children waiting to be adopted. These results were defined as those children with a goal of adoption and those whose parental rights were terminated (Sioco). In addition to children feeling the repercussions of banned gay adoption, the couples who desire children are also negatively affected. There are countless homosexual couples that would like to complete their family by adopting one or more children of their own (see Fig. 2 below). Unfortunately, this is being completed through loopholes rather than the legal process in order to develop their family, such as one parent adopting the child rather than the couple. Federal law does not yet recognize gay marriage, leaving rights to be determined at the state level, often resulting in them varying greatly. The Williams Institute and the Urban Institute concluded in 2007 that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Medea And Agamemnon Research Paper The Greek tragedies Medea by Euripides and Agamemnon share similar character traits displayed through Medea and Clytemnestra which ultimately lead to their own downfall. Clytemnestra slaughtered her own husband and his foreign concubine seeing vengeance towards her husband Agamemnon for sacrificing their daughter. Medeapoisoned King Creon, a princess, and murdered her own children to seek justifiable revenge against Jason; her husband. Both women are seen to resemble strength and power. She is known as the woman [that] maneuvers like a man (13). Men were known to fear women who embodied masculine tendencies. The traits were regarded as unnatural during the ancient times. Clytemnestra was enraged about the fact she did not have the same regard as men. This put her on the edge to deny her femininity and overcome the men that surround her in order to gain masculine powers. Medea, on the other hand accepted that she was indeed a woman, but crossed the line of her feminine limitations set by ancient Greek times. She did this to prove she possessed more ... • 45. Roger Chillingworth In The Scarlet Letter Altered by sin in The Scarlet Letter, evil, obsessive, and manipulative are what describe Roger Chillingworth. From the beginning, Roger is an enigmatic yet intriguing character, knowledgeable in medicine from his time in captivity, as well as unbeknownst to others except for the audience the wife of Hester Prynne. Becoming eviler as the story goes on, Roger s complexion is only matched by the devil himself, with his only goal being to pursue Dimmesdale for his (and Hester s) act of sin. Roger stays for seven years, becoming obsessed about Dimmesdale s suffering and pain, like a leech. His dependency proves to be his downfall, as when Dimmesdale accepts his sin to be a part of him, Roger s life is now without purpose. These chain of events leads to the idea that Roger Chillingworth s act of sin (revenge), as well as Hester and Dimmesdale s act of sin (passion) influence his character development and outcome greatly in The Scarlet Letter, as he becomes psychologically more manipulative, evil, and obsessive, and physically more sinister looking. • 47. Cultural Intelligence Of The United States And Italy Globalization has made it paramount for businesses and individuals that want to venture into a different country to have cultural intelligence of that country. Cultural intelligence is defined as capability to successfully adapt to new cultural environments and unfamiliar settings attributable to cultural context (Earley, Ang, and Tan 2006). Obtaining cultural knowledge allows business relationships to flourish, provides feasibility and sustainability for the business. It also shows cultural sensitivity, which is important when trying to win over locals of a specific area. The United States and Italy The United States and Italy are both advanced industrial countries, yet they differ in many areas including culture and how business is conducted. The United States has very little cultural influence on Italy; in fact it is the opposite. The element of diversity is deep within the United States that it has become a melting pot filled with an array of music, food, language, and many other customs that are not native. The relationship between the two countries has seen its adversity but they have created a strong bilateral relationship which aids in strengthening the economy of both countries. In the 2013 Italy United States Summit then Ambassador David Thorne stated Globalization is the disruptive force, in both a positive and negative sense, that is challenging both of our countries today and it is reshaping our traditional ways of thinking about the world. • 48. Location Of Statcom For Power Flow Control Location of STATCOM for Power Flow Control Dr..Neelakantappa, Narasapur, Hyderabad.,India Dr.AmjanShaik Narasapur, Hyderabad.,India ABSTRACT: Power flow control in a long transmission line plays a vital role in electrical power system. This paper uses the shunt connected STATCOM for the control of voltage and power flow. The proposed device is used in different locations such as sending end, middle and receiving end of the transmission line. The PWM control is used to generate the firing pulses of the controller circuit. Simulation modeling of the system is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Based on a voltage source converter, the STATCOM regulates system voltage by absorbing or generating reactive power. This paper deals with a cascaded multilevel converter model, which is a 48 pulse (three levels) GTO converter. The simulation studies are carried for sending end, middle and receiving end of the transmission line. The objective is to define the reactive power generated and voltage control at different locations (at sending end, middle, receiving end) of transmission line using STATCOM. KEYWORDS: FACTS device, STATCOM, SVC, PWM, MATLAB /Simulink. I. INTRODUCTION: The power system is an interconnection of generating units to load centres through high voltage electric transmission lines and in general is mechanically controlled. It can be divided into three subsystems: generation, transmission and distribution subsystems. In order to provide cheaper electricity the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Effect Of Negative Feedback Loop On Pulse Regardless of if a person is at rest or if they are doing a vigorous workout, the body still undergoes physiological changes to try and sustain a homeostatic state. Although we were unable to attain blood pressures in this experiment we were able to track the changes in our pulse due to different positions and exercise. The mechanism responsible for this change is a negative feedbackloop. A negative feed back loop is a pathway in which the variable is stabilized and is composed of an initial stimulus, a response and a stimulus that shuts off the response loop. A negative feedback loop s responds to the changes in heartrate by trying to get the body back to a normal set point for pulse. If there were no negative feedback loops the body would have a hard time regulating its physiological fluctuations.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The supine position caused me to relax and my pulse to decrease, but when I began to exercise it increased. Both of these actions took my pulse away from its normal range. The response was how I reacted to it. When in the supine position my pulse decreased because gravity was taking over the job of getting blood to my limbs, but it increased during my jog because my heart had to pump harder to distribute my oxygenated blood to my muscle tissue. By the second time I went up the stairs, my pulse had increased to 126, which was lower than the first pulse of 148. This happened because my set point was at a higher range, similar to a thermostat and I required less oxygen allowing me to return to a homeostatic state easier. I m sure that if we had checked our blood pressure we would have seen the same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Ransom By David Malouf Analysis Grief can play with one s mind twisting and manipulating one to not be the same person they used to be, while grief can also change one for the better. In the book, Ransom, by David Malouf, Hector kills Achilles friend, Patroclus, so Achilles kills Hector. Priam wants to see his son one last time so he makes a plan to get to him. Somax takes Priam on a carriage to go find his son Hector. They have some troubles along the way, but they eventually get to Priam s son. Priam brings Hector back to Troy and Hector is buried. In Ransom by David Malouf, the author teaches the reader the power of grief through the experiences of Priam and Achilles. Grief can be a controlling force, it can cause and individual to change as a person, and grief can strongly influence one s actions. The sorrow from the loss of a loved can be burdensome and can take a toll on one and their family. Priam explains to Hecuba, It is eleven days now since Hector s death and we have done nothing, all of us, but weep and sit stunned with grief (Malouf 50). Priam s family is depressed over the loss of their son Hector. It controls their emotions and the way they think of their life now, moving on without Hector. While Priam is talking with Deiphobus, Priam lowers his head. When he raises it again his look is grave but his eyes, for all the power of emotion in him are dry (Malouf 84). Priam is having a difficult time coming to terms that Hector is actually gone, so he is overcome with multiple emotions. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Isolation And Social Isolation Canada s aging population is growing. One of the number one emerging issue facing seniors is social isolation. Statistics Canada s 2008/09 Canadian Community Health Survey found that 19% of individuals aged 65 or over felt a lack of companionship, left out, or isolated from others (National Seniors Council, 2014). Social isolation is not the same as loneliness. It is a form of emotion that makes people depression. Social isolation impacts on seniors quality of life, mental and physical health. To reduce the social isolation is the way seniors are connected socially. For example, there are exercise programs and communityengaged art programs for the elderly in the community. This programis effective for seniors physical and mental health. Although such programs have beneficial effects on seniors health, some studies argue that there are barriers to reducing the social isolation of older people in such programs. Community programs and community participation programs benefit from the seniors physical, emotional and social well being. The purpose of the Community exercise program is a socialization based exercise program to improve the seniors health. Community arts programs aim to promote optimal health for seniors. However, it is difficult to reduce the social isolation without using these objectives potentially.
