Gender Theory And Standpoint Theory
Gender Theory and Standpoint Theory
Kean University
Spring 2015
Anastasia Mendola
Society should be socially acceptable to all members of it no matter where they works, how much
money they have, or don t have, the color of their skin, there sexual orientation, where the
geographically live, etc. when it comes to topic of this nature, most people are very hesitant and don t
want to talk about it. Is it because they know that there are problems that need to be fixed, or because
they know that no matter how much you talk about the topics it s a lot harder to change the way
society is than to just accept it and let it be. The paper discussed the two theories of standpoint theory
and the gender theory. They both are present in everyday society but it just isn t that clear at all times.
When most people think about the job that they have now or that they will have in the future, they don
t think about that where they stand in society will be based off of what one solely knows. That is
referring to the standpoint theory. The one main person that helped develop standpoint theory was
Dorothy E. Smith. She was born in Great Britain in 1926. She worked as a secretary at a publishing
company before she decided to try to get a better job by getting a college degree. She began college at
the London School of Economics in 1951, and she received her bachelor s degree in sociology from
the London School of Economics in 1955 (Feminist). Smith says that although her years at

Born Free Themes
In the movie Born Free, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers play conservationists Joy and George
Adamson, who become the surrogate parents of three lion cubs, later giving two to a zoo and keeping
Elsa, the smallest of the bunch. As their time with the lioness continues, they are given orders to return
her to the wild, where they realize they must return her to her roots among the African Savannah,
touching on the theme of nature and the true meaning of freedom. Elsa s legacy within this film is her
role as an ambassador like role in being a bridge between mankind and nature in helping understand
the limit in humanity s ability to survive alongside the wild.
Like humans, animals are capable of emotion. Many people fear creatures like Elsa because they are
mainly known for their instinctual and predatorial nature. In the film, John Kendall, George s boss and
presumably experienced in wildlife like lions, is fearful of Elsa despite her easygoing and merry
attitude with the Adamsons. His position somewhat makes this ironic, as one would not normally fear
what they are trying to protect and take care of. Elsa portrays a wide range of emotions that people
would usually think she would be unable to comprehend. Elsa expresses sorrow when Joy leaves for
town and as she waits for her to come back home, and then elation in Joy s return. Lions and most
animals have different ways of communicating their needs and emotions. Humans tend to attribute
human interactions to animals actions,

The First Repeated Word Is Child
The next repeated word is child. Paul was explaining being a child not only physical appearance but
also the spiritually. When a person is mentally and/or physically as a child, the person is not able to
connect to God. They are not able to understand what God is trying to communicate, and God is
known to communicate through different ways. This is shown by Paul used of Greek word, nepios,
which means infant. He was comparing them to infants in their spiritual maturity and love. However,
he continues to say as he grows his relationship to God he becomes less like an infant. Therefore, if a
person does not pay close attention to what God is saying, the person may lose the meaning and the
message of God. Therefore, when Paul said that he has been able to understand God he has left his
childish ways of thinking, acting, and speaking. Now that he is a man, he knows that his responsibility
is different from those of a child. Now he is responsible to stand up and defend the word of God.
Is not and does not are also repetition. Paul wanted to make his statement as clear as possible of what
love should look like and should feel like. Not many people do not understand what love is or feels;
for this reason, Paul explained that love should not have a negative feeling. That love should not bring
people down, rather love should be of support. He explains that a person should not feel successful
from the failure of the other person; or that a person should not irritate another

Explain Why The Driving Age Should Not Be Raised
The legal driving age should not be raised. The legal age to get a job is sixteen, so it makes sense to
also making the legal driving age the same. Parents should not be expected to drive their kids to and
from work. Some may argue that they could take public transportation. However, many places,
including where I live, do not have daily buses, trains, etc. Another reason the driving age should not
be raised is that there are many laws that only affect young drivers that influence them to be
responsible. The most accident prone age is 16, which is due to their lack of experience. Raising the
legal driving age would just make the new minimum age the most accident prone. Teens need the
freedom to drive so they don t have to rely on their parents.

Forensic Science in the 21st Century Forensic science has various influences on crime, investigation
and the people that are involved. Forensic science has a connection with the courts to ensure crimes
are getting solved and justice is being served to those that commit crimes. With the help of forensic
science, crimes are being solved from a human and technological aspect. This paper highlights
numerous discussions on how forensic science plays a role in criminal justices system, security, media
and the law. Forensic science is a separate entity from the police; although a large portion of ... Show

Dissatisfied with the criminal justice system not solving cases fast enough, the public then places
astronomical expectations on medical examiners. Real life investigators believing that a lack of
competency may be at play when in reality, society has been provided a distorted view of the lengthy,
painstaking process involved. According to Nurse Advocacy (2007), People disregard all messages in
advertising, since ads commonly present actors and models, but that is simply not how the human
mind works. Despite being fiction, media products like this can still influence: our views of the
vehicle in question (as the advertiser fervently hopes); the ability of women today to become
authoritative, powerful professionals, yet to still have a family (presumably this ad was directed
mainly at women who would identify with the surgeon); the basic set up of OR s, the kinds of
professionals who participate, how they dress, and what tools they use; and of course, the relative
power, knowledge and professional roles of physicians and nurses. Some of this may be unintended,
but all of it sells the minivan to the target demographic. All of the elements above contribute to the
high credibility of the surgeon, who is, after all, doing the selling. In this manner media also increase
the knowledge of those that are committing crimes, what they may not have been doing before they
are doing it now. For example if they were not wearing gloves and using cell phones that cannot be

Mau In Nation
Nation is a novel by Terry Pratchett. Set on the Nation, a tropical island in the Great Southern Pelagic
Ocean, a substitute for the South Pacific, the book details the events that follow a tsunami that causes
widespread devastation across the Great Southern Pelagic. Mau, the protagonist, is a member of the
community that inhabits the Nation. At the beginning of the novel, Mau is returning from a coming of
age ritual on the nearby Boys Island, and survives the tidal wave whilst at sea. He returns to the
Nation to find that everybody on the island had been killed by the natural disaster. This is a significant
adversity that Mau faces throughout the novel and it forces him to become a capable leader,
profoundly influences his identity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a traditional belief of the Nation that [y]ou left your boy soul [on the Boy s Island] and got given
a man soul when you got back to the Nation (14). When departing from the Boys Island to return to
the Nation, Mau remarks that [h]e d be like mihei gawi, the little blue hermit crab, scuttling from his
shell to a new one once a year, easy prey for any passing squid (16). Shortly after the wave, Mau again
identifies as a blue hermit crab, remarking that he [has] no soul [because he did not undergo the
ceremonies that would grant one a man soul]. His boy soul had vanished with the island, and he d
never get a man soul now. He [is] the blue hermit crab, hurrying from one shell to another, and the big
shell he had thought he could see had been taken away (107). At this time, he views his situation
negatively. However, he later embraces this identity. He declares that [he is] the little blue hermit crab
... [a]nd [he is] running. But [he will] not be trapped in a shell again, because ... any shell will be too
small. [He wants] to know why (174 5). In this quote, he uses any shell as a metaphor for the narrow
religious doctrine held by Ataba and the Grandfathers, and expresses his desire for knowledge. As a
consequence of the adversity associated with the tidal wave, Mau compares himself to a little blue
hermit crab, scuttling between souls. As the novel progresses, Mau accepts and adopts this

Introduction
There have been many career criminals, but most of them have been Caucasian, so I decided to see if
we had any African male or female career criminals, and despite the myth that there are no black serial
killers, there are, but there are very few because, there are not a lot of agencies that keep the statistics
of the number of African American serial killers compared with Caucasians. Based on information
received from a phone call to Sgt. Thomas from the Augusta, Richmond County Sheriff department he
explained to me that the FBI s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime does not maintain
statistics for serial killers, and they do not have any type of national repository that can keep up let
alone track the race or number of serial killers throughout the U.S.
So, from my source of contact I am incline to believe that the FBIs has never been able to create a
nonspecific profile for a serial killer nor a set physiognomies that someone can examine or look out
for. Moreover, serial killers tend to span all racial groups. There are Asian, white, Hispanic, and
African American serial killers. Basically, the racial diversification of serial killers usually mirrors that
of the overall population.

Third, Andersson et al. [27] who had studied the effects of delayed compared with early umbilical

Describe The Pre-Approval Process Of Purchasing A Martgage
If you are a first time homebuyer and you have no idea if you are a good candidate for a mortgage,
take the steps to get pre qualified by a mortgage lender, and then get pre approved. There is a
difference between getting prequalified and pre approved, and by getting pre qualified you can
determine if pursuing a mortgage will be worth your efforts. For the pre qualification process, you will
be asked a variety of questions about your income, debt, credit score and rating, and other
information. This allows the mortgage lender to get enough information to decide if you could be a
potential candidate, and what you could afford.
The pre qualification process won t require that you have your credit score pulled, which could
negatively affect your credit. There are credit repair programs and other options for those who aren t
pre qualified, and who want to get on the right track to purchasing a home. If the pre qualification
comes back that you are approved, you ll want to explore your mortgage options and start shopping
for the lender that offers a great low interest rate. Once you find a company that offers a low interest
rate, you want to move forward with the pre approval process. ... Show more content on

Essay Meaning and influences of The Halo Effect
Have you ever judged someone by just taking in consideration one physical aspect of that person? Has
that judgment been a positive statement? If it is, you would need to know what the Halo effect is. This
effect consists in making good judgments about a person base on one of his or her character´s aspect.
To make clear, who have never listen or think that beautiful people are smart, or that people who wear
glasses are nerds. I am pretty sure that you have criticized someone by using some of these statements.
Therefore, you have used the Halo Effect to draw conclusions about a person. This effect can be

Consequently, they have found out that there is a serious difference between the attractive and average
looking interviewees in terms of high and low status job packages offered . During the experiment,
women interviewers gave more high positions to handsome men than attractive women. But, on the
other hand, men did not have preferences of gender or attractiveness. Beauty is an influential aspect in
different camps such as media or jobs. People may think that beauty human beings are more
intelligent and popular than other people. They are just taking in consideration this characteristic to
employ these people, but they don t see if these people are more capable mentally or intellectually
than other citizens to do certain jobs.
In education, we also can see it. This effect can interfere in how students grade his/her teacher. The
article Do Goods Look Equal Good Evaluations? written by Gabriela Montell states clear that students
are taking the physical aspect as an important statement to qualify their teachers. Students rates about
their professors are based on good looking and skin s color. Beautiful and white people have high
scores as teachers. This resolution has been a concern to all teachers and professors. They are not
completely sure that they as educators and their pedagogical techniques are competent to teach their
students. Moreover, this effect also can lead to injustices. Professor or teachers can be fired because of

Relationships In R K Narayan
Human Relationships in R.K.Narayan writing with reference to current scenario To be a good writer
anywhere, you must have roots both in religion and family. I have these things. R.K.Narayan has
depicted himself. Man is a social animal and a man living outside the society is either a god or a beast
. This proverb depicts the importance of society and relations for a human being. That is why, since
the Renaissance Humanism, and for that purpose the study of Humanities has become a sine qua non
for the literary artists. It was established long ago, what a piece of work is man? and The proper study
of mankind is man. All this accounts for an exploration of a connecting link between two human
beings, better expressed in the term, human relationship . In the arena of Indo Anglian Fiction, R.K.

However, as literature is the mirror of society, the term has acquired a literary dimension and
interpretation; in sociology of literature, such a relationship opens a wider panorama, displaying its
significance on domestic, social and cultural levels. Thus in the vicinity of home, there is studied
parents son relationship, brother sister relationship, husband wife relationship, and above all the
relationship between two women, with all its conflict and compromise. On social grounds, the
relationship outside the bonds of family is stressed, such as master labour relationship, teacher taught
relationship, employee employer relationship, buyer seller relationship etc. In Indian context every
type of human relationship is strengthened by addressing the other person in domestic nomenclature
just as Sakkutai Kanchamma Ismail Chacha ; every old woman is addressed as Dadi by children as a
sense of respect and regard. Such an emotional bondage is possible in India

The Importance Of Electronic Mass Communication
Web 2.0 environments stand to have a profound impact on social practices (Bruns, 2013, page 117)
iPhones have a way of removing people from conversations that they may be physically present for.
Again, the phone pulls people away from their surroundings, so while they are physically there in a
room full of people, mentally they are not. They are disengaged from the real conversation, wrapped
up in the virtual discussions taking place on the phone. One quote from George Lipsitz in his article
Popular Culture that I think works well here is the powerful apparatuses of contemporary commercial
electronic mass communications dominate the discourse in the modern world. (Lipsitz, 2013, page 46)
The iPhone has changed the way in which people communicate with each other, the things we choose
to speak about, and the way in which we discuss such topics.
I frequently get frustrated with my roommate when he uses his iPhone, as do many of his friends. The
phone sucks him in, he becomes intrigued with the apps on his phone, scrolling through social media
and non stop texting. His family regularly facetimes him, usually at the most inconvenient times like
while in the car, during a movie, or at the grocery store. I have found that sometimes I think I am
having a conversation with him and realize he is not heard a single word I have said because he is too
zoned into his phone. If you ask him a question while he is using his phone, he usually will answer 5
minutes later, if at all, but

Life of Pi Cast Away Comparative Essay:
Belief and Survival
In order for human kind to survive the painfully realistic days of existence, a sort of belief system is
direly needed. As shown through Pi Patel from Life of Pi and Chuck Noland from Cast Away, holding
onto a belief of something provides one with the determination to survive the worst conditions. Both
the novel and the book share the story of two castaways who depend on their belief in something to
survive and conquer their respective challenges Pi Patel who depends on his faith in religion, and
Chuck Noland with his faith in returning to civilization back to his loved one. At one point, they both

Additionally, this fluctuation of faith can also be seen through Chuck Noland in Cast Away. When
Chuck Noland reaches his lowest point of hopelessness, he attempts to commit suicide. As time
progresses, his faith in seeing Kelly again slowly diminish because Noland is aware that she had to let
[him] go (Zemeckis, Cast Away). He realizes that she probably thinks that he is already dead and thus
in a sense, Noland knows that he has already lost her. Like Pi, Noland also loses his motivation of
surviving, as he believes Kelly has moved on with her life and begins to believe that he is going die
alone on this island.
As both characters face the biggest hurdle of their journey, a miracle occurs and their faith is revived
and stronger than ever for the remainder of their journey back to land. For Pi Patel, he finds a floating
paradise called Algae Island with unlimited amounts of vegetation, fresh water, and meerkats. In a
sense, it is as if God gives him a quick break by satisfying him with an endless supply of food and
water. One way to perceive the island is that it symbolizes religion in an organized manner. For
example, Pi states that the island has evenly scattered, identically sized ponds with trees sparsely
distributed in a uniform way between them, the whole arrangement giving the unmistakable
impression of following a design (Martel 334). Like the island, religion is an

Based on M/M/1 Model

Superman Cannot Always Save The Day
Superman Cannot Always Save the Day According to the results of standardized tests across America,
public schooling systems are not always efficient in educating their students to their fullest capability.
When we think about corruption in public schools, we think about schools in lower income areas such
as Chicago Heights or any other major cities that are in the rougher areas of the city. The documentary
focuses on those stereotypical schools for their setting. In the film Waiting for Superman created by
Davis Guggenheim, the documentary exposes the overall fraudulency of the public school systems
across the United States and uncovers the actual ways that certain teachers act and how they partake in
educating their students. The interactive use of pop culture animations and silence in the documentary
illustrates the discussion of the school s corruption in the documentary for the audience to better
understand. Not only does the documentary target the underperforming public schools, it digs deeper
into the actual teachers within the failing districts. Undetermined teachers are one of the major causes
of a failing school. Without properly educated students, the test standards are not met, which means
insufficient funds towards that district. Consequently, the teachers are not driven thanks to tenure they
can sit back, relax, and collect their paycheck without doing efficient work. In Waiting for Superman,

What makes a hero? In The Odyssey , an epic by Homer, we were asked whether Odysseus was a hero
or not. But what makes a hero? In movies, heroes are depicted as someone with superhuman strength

unimaginable monsters, and without him many would have died. Odysseus is a hero because he was
both clever and brave. Some people might say the things he did were unheroic. After all, Odysseus
actions were reckless and his men never made it back home, but this is wrong. Odysseus fought for

Ministry And Gifts Of The Holy Spirit
Ministry and gifts of the Holy Spirit Ministry and the gifts of the Holy Spirit seem to be something
that a lot of the church have forgotten about. Of course if you were raised Pentecostal, this is
something you might be rather familiar with. However, I have ever heard anybody speak in tongues
being raised in a Nazarene Church, and I was very un familiarized with these gifts. It wasn t until I
was sixteen years old that I actually heard anyone speak in tongues. I had never heard about gifts such
as prophecy, Different kind of tongs, are The interpretation of tongs. Speaking in tongues was
something that was perceive to be scary. You didn t hear of people being healed, or if you did it
seemed hush hush, but I remember the church speaking a lot about was the gift of faith. In my
research of several different places, internet and books, I have found some interesting breakdowns of
the gifts of the Spirit. Ways that I had never heard of before, that actually were quite good. So there
are nine gifts laid out in 1 Corinthians 12:8 10. These are: 1. Words of wisdom ~ ability to make
decisions and give guidance that is according to God s will. 2. Words of knowledge ~ ability to have
an in depth understanding of spiritual issues or situations...resulting in bringing wisdom and guidance.

what the circumstances. 4. Gifts of Healing ~ Miraculous ability to use God s healing power to

Religious Symbolism in Painting The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius by Carlo Crivelli
The artist Carlo Crivelli painted The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius in the 15th century.
Noticeably, Crivelli s portrayal of the Annunciation differs vastly to the one actually presented in Luke
1:26 38 of the Bible. For instance, Jesus coming was said to have been announced to Mary in
Nazareth, a town in Galilee (Luke 1:26). However, in Crivelli s interpretation of the event, the
Annunciation is set in the elaborate town of Ascoli, a town that has been portrayed to be flourishing in
the opulence and aesthetics that the Renaissance had brought to Crivelli s era. However, Crivelli may

colours in his painting to celebrate Ascoli s new, free status as well as to signify the joyous coming of
the Christ child.
A similarity with the actual Annunciation is the presence of the Archangel Gabriel as in the Bible, he
was sent to the Virgin Mary to announce the imminent arrival of baby Jesus. However, an irregularity
is still at hand as the Archangel is pictured to be walking alongside a Saint, which is a rarity in
religious works of art. The saint who he is walking with is Saint Emidius, the patron saint of Ascoli. In
his hands, Saint Emidius is shown to be carrying a model of his town. The model itself is dominated
by a collection of towers, which are status symbols of prosperity as well as connecting the Earth to the
Heavens above due to their height. The prosperity is reinforced throughout the image by the presence
of all the elegant architecture.
Visually, the audience is drawn into the painting by two protruding images: an apple and a gherkin.
The apple is suggestive of sin due to its obvious connections to the story of Adam and Eve and the
gherkin is representative of

Bone Injury Paper
There are 206 bones in the human body. Broken and fractured bones are one of the most common
injuries, about 6 million people in the US will break a bone each year. And out of these 300,000
people will have a serious injury that will require different methods to heal. There are a variety ways
of bone tissue repairing but most of them are not long term and can cause other complications. There
are different stages for bone repair. The first step is the formation of hematoma at the break, then the
formation of a fibrocartilaginous callus, the third step is the formation of a bony callus, and finally
remodeling and addition of compact bone. In the early stages, a hematoma develops within the
fracture location during the first few hours and days. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

accepted the award and took my seat. Once the applaud of my fellow scouts and friends died down, I
thanked everybody for coming to recognize my accomplishment of becoming an Eagle Scout. I
continued to express my gratitude to all the leaders and parents that made my time as a Boy Scout
some of the best times I spent in the outdoors. I reflected over the many campouts I took when I was

Stary Messenger
To almost everyone in the sixteenth century, it was common knowledge that sun revolved around the
Earth. After all, the universities taught it, and the Papacy preached it. The heliocentric theory was
heresy, at best. Scientific fact was proven not by observation, or as we know it today, the scientific
method, it was instead proven by philosophy. If something appeared to be true, then it was true. In
1610, Galileo published his book Starry Messenger , which was created based on observations made
with the newly invented telescope. This book, along with others published at this time, effectively
started the Scientific Revolution. Galileo was born in Pisa in 1564 as the first child of Vincenzio
Galilei. His father was a talented musician and textile merchant who provided an above average
standard of living. His father worked two jobs. One as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Galileo would face intense opposition from the Catholic Church, unwilling to accept these findings to
be true. After an official Papal condemnation of Copernicus and the heliocentric theory, Galileo was
ordered in 1616 not to teach, hold or defend in any manner whatsoever, his findings supposedly
proving the heretical Copernican theory. He would later stand trial in 1633 in Rome and eventually
recant everything he d defended the past two decades. Despite this, he was forced into house arrest for
the last 10 years of his life. He would continue his work while arrested, proving At the age 77, Galileo
would die in his home near Florence. All in all, Galileo s greatest contribution to the Scientific
Revolution was first of all, starting it, as well as the introduction of the use of experimentation and
observation to prove and disprove scientific theories. Galileo would almost single handedly start a
period in time that gave way to reason overcoming traditional and dogmatic

America s Fascination with Serial Killers
As Boorstin identified, we choose who is famous by our attention, what they do in fact is not what
determines their fate. Fame is no longer about the deed behind it, but simply the spectacle Hitler made
the cover of Time magazine seven times, Stalin following with 12 covers of his own. The line between
people we love to love and people we love to hate is becoming thinner and blurred, so we thrust not
only heroes into the public view but also villains . This confusion between fame and celebrity owes a
lot to the change in newspapers over time; where once they delivered unbiased and detailed factual
accounts on events that happened, in the new age of mass media they began to compete with the
magazines. Tabloidisation meant that rather than objective articles based on fact we were instead
victim to the murder hype , with sensation fuelled stories about the latest fashionable murder trial, the
papers giving the killers their own stage name and persona to match. The idea of giving serial killers
their own moniker is something that has contributed tremendously to the glamorisation of killers,
because it is much like a stage name that you would give an actor or a singer. The names can either
relate to the act or style of killings i.e Jack The Ripper, which conjures a mental image of the killer at
work or could be to do with their location as in The Boston Strangler . This trend seems to originate
from the United States, for it is across their newspapers and news shows that

Lapping Card Essay
Now that I have gone through all of the cards I will go back through them all to make sure I don t have
any over lapping categories. First of all while I was thinking of categories and readying the cards I
realized that what was on the card I started reflecting it on my own life. For example, some of the
cards taking about cleaning the house and then I thought I need to it too. I started to agree with these
cards so that they made sense in my own life and that they were like my own thoughts. They then fit
in to categories easier. Now have them all into groups I realize that I could have just used Garfinkel s
invariant procedures as my categories and just organized them based on how I made sense of the
cards. My first category could have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be like a world that has no meaning at all if we just questioned everything. If I kept questing
the cards I would never be able to place them in categories or ever be done with this project. The most
important category would have been typification. I had to keep coming up with different strategies and
rules to be able to make sense of the cards. I feel that the categories them self are different
typification. I have different strategies that are making sense of the cards so that I can place them in to
groups that I already know about. The criteria of the assignment made it difficulty when think of
categories since we couldn t have no more than ten. I at first started out with a group called friends
then I did one of family and then realized I could have a broader category called people. I made a
strategy that any card that talked about a person or could have been said by a person would be grouped
together. Most of the cards could fit in a category called stocks of knowledge. Whenever I used
previous knowledge to make sense of the card is an example of this. The card that talked about David
Beckman I put in the hobbies category. I know that he is a soccer player and assume that this person s
hobby is soccer. If I didn t know he played soccer this card would have gone in the people category.
Some of the cards are written in

Who Is Masakado A Villain
Japan in the 10th century was experiencing change and disorder as its relatively new central
government sought techniques for a strong and enduring legacy. In this period lived a man named
Taira no Masakado. In events which are swirled with mystery and legend, Masakado found himself in
direct opposition with the government, even proclaiming the title of the New Emperor . His legacy
endures to this day and is a fundamental component in contemporary Japanese folklore. Was
Masakado a product of his environment or a self motivated rebel, examining this question is important
in the discussions of the motivations behind his actions. Whether he should be viewed as a villain or a
hero is to be considered by the reader. Taira no Masakado is both ... Show more content on

Having just been found innocent in Kyoto for his attacks in Hitachi, would it not make sense for
Masakado to bring accusations against Yokishane? Masakado does not seek government help in
deterring Yokishane, this suggests that he knew he was in the wrong and was hesitant to return to
Kyoto, mainly because he felt as if he got lucky at his previous hearing. Skipping to Masakado s
confrontation with Sadamori in Hitachi, as Masakado wins the battle, storming the provincial capital
grounds in the process, one gets a sense of the sudden panic defining his proceeding actions.
Masakado immediately flees home to Shimosa. Once home, in an utterly confusing turn of events,
Masakado heads out again, this time to conquer a handful of other eastern provinces. Instead of
formerly addressing the rulers in Kyoto as the new emperor of the east or even as an adversary,
Masakado writes a letter in an attempt to explain his actions and how they are justified. Using his
imperial family ties, he tries to undermine the stories of his actions as propaganda from his opposers
and claim that he remains loyal to the government. This is the act of a desperate man; a man who,
maybe, has realized that he has made a grave mistake. Masakado wanted to believe that his conquests
were justified, yet based on his actions it is apparent that he was not and knew it. Not having a strong

Gingival Stereotypes In Syria
There are several differences among the male and female populations of Syria. In Syria, the average
height of males is five feet, eight inches and females are generally five feet, one and a half inches (
Average , 2016). Syrians are stereotyped as having olive toned skin, black eyes, and black hair, but in
fact, many have very light skin, brown or blonde hair, and blue or green eyes (Das, 2017). A native
group, the Kurds, have light skin, green eyes, and blonde hair (Das, 2017). A majority of this
population have almond shaped eyes. Gingival biotypes may affect dental treatment success. Females
have thin gingival biotypes with triangular shaped teeth and males have thick biotypes with square

Wrestling As A Social Phenomenon
Professional Wrestling is a world renowned topic that has universally shaped the lives of many
individuals around the world. There is no denying that professional wrestling is firmly entrenched as a
part of modern culture. Wrestling has become a multimillion dollar industry with a very long history
dating back hundreds of years. I have decided to write about and discuss the lack of explanation
sociologists have when describing wrestling as a social phenomenon. The reason I have decided to
write about this topic is because as a child I was fascinated by pro wrestling, more specifically, World
Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). I feel that wrestling has played an important role in my
development socially, emotionally, and physically. To begin, it is important to understand that
wrestling is above and beyond a spectacle as described by Roland Barthes. Wrestling is an investment
in one s self. It is an accumulation of countless hours spent on the wrestling mat, in the gym, and in
the studio. It is a display of hegemonic masculinity to its highest degree, wrestlers understand this.
Professional Wrestlers understand that the nature of the sport is tough, unforgiving, and requires a
superhero attitude. The common goals shared amongst the wrestling culture have a distinct impact on
how wrestlers identify themselves to society. Socially, wrestling has not been analyzed as closely as it
should be. Subconsciously, individuals who attend or express an interest in professional

Child G And The Main Components Of The Phonetic Stage
Child G is 6 years old female and her parents express that she enjoys writing both in school and at
home. Her older sister goes to sleepaway camp during the summer months and so in this piece of
writing Child G talks about her weekend at her sister s camp reunion. This writing is part of a weekly
classroom activity, weekend news . According to Gentry s five stages of spelling development, Child
G s writing suggests she is in the phonetic stage, with some examples of transitional writing present
(Gentry, 1982). In this piece of writing, the spelling of words has been based on the sounds they hear,
one of the main components of the phonetic stage. This is most evident in the way she has spelt
reunion, as reyouyen. This may be understood better by child G with the use of syllable games, such
as clapping as saying words aloud to hear how many syllables are present. However, Child G does
show knowledge of the rules with regards to words ending in e, which is evident in side. The National
Curriculum states that children of this age should understand such rule (Department for Education,
2013a), which indicates that Child G is progressing into the transitional stage, and is starting to
become less dependent on sounds when writing (Wyse et al. 2013). In order for Child G to sit
comfortably in the transitional stage the child s teachers and parents/carers could use several methods.

12 Angry Men- Jurors 4 and 8 Essay
Reginald Rose s 12 Angry Men brings 12 jurors together in a room to decide whether a young foreign
boy is guilty of killing his father. The play is interwoven with dynamic characterisation, striking
symbolism and intense moments of drama. Although Rose positions Juror 8 as the hero, the strongest
character is in fact Juror 4, who is an independent thinker, rational and calm even as tension begins to
build. Although Juror 4 initially votes guilty, he is able to admit his fault and change his vote.
The ability to remain independent proved to be the most important character trait of Juror 4.

and used Juror 4 as a catalyst for the final vote change.
Juror 4 is able to remain calm and composed throughout the most stressful of situations. While Juror

Serratia marcescens Susceptibility to the Antibiotics Streptomycin and Ampicillin
Rileigh M. Jones
Biological Sciences Student, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853 2401 e mail: rj246@cornell.edu
Abstract The gram negative bacteria Serratia marcescens has gained attention in recent years for its
tendency to cause nosocomial infections in humans, as well as its development of antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotic resistance in a bacterium that is harmful to humans can be concerning as it can result in
infections that are difficult to treat. In order to find out more about the growing antibiotic resistance of
S. marcescens, this experiment used the disc diffusion method to test the susceptibility of S.
marcescens to two varieties of antibiotics that were known to have success against some gram
negative bacterium: streptomycin and ampicillin. These antibiotics were, respectively, an
aminoglycoside and a beta lactam. The experiment tested which of the two that S. marcescens had
developed more of a resistance to. The zones of inhibition of the discs were significantly larger for
discs treated with streptomycin compared to discs treated with ampicillin. This led to the conclusion
that S. marcescens is less resistant to streptomycin than to ampicillin.
Key Words: Serratia marcescems, antibiotic resistance, streptomycin, ampicillin
INTRODUCTION
While the bacteria S. marcescens was considered to be harmless in the past, it has been identified in
recent years as a cause of serious

It has been a decade since Kolkata s Saint of Gutters , Mother Teresa went home to God. But
Missionaries of Charity, the order established by Mother in 1950, still continues to feel her divine
presence around. The moment one enters the premises of Mother s House on AJC Bose Road in
central Kolkata, one is overwhelmed by a feeling of warmth, peace and serenity like one has never
experienced before. Two days before her tenth death anniversary, the spirit of Mother Teresa rests in
peace in a white marble tomb, built in the middle of Mother s House, and is surrounded by devotees,
who sit with their heads bowed, paying a silent tribute to the lady who gave up everything to serve the
poorest of the poor . Service to the poorest of the poor still continues to be the fundamental article of

Essay on Federal Disaster Planning and Relief
This paper will discuss information on the federal disaster planning and relief program, and explain
how the program raises issues of federalism, and the pros and cons from two perspectives. Disaster

How Disaster Planning and Relief Raise Issues of Federalism The American form of Federalism has
been argued as one of the main challenges to an effective response. For instance, conflicting goals
may create tension between different levels of government agencies, local authorities may be reluctant
to turn responsibilities over for dealing with the emergency to federal and state entities, and there may
be various degrees and forms of collaboration (Schneck, D. 2009). Issues with federalism surfaced
within several contexts in 2005, for instance, The REAL ID Act, federal requirements associated with
Temporary Aid to Needy Families reauthorization, the Terri Schiavo case, state and local government
opposition to the No Child Left behind Act, and senate confirmation hearings for Chief Justice John
Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, and the delayed and poorly coordinated intergovernmental response
to Hurricane Katrina and Rita also generated debate in Congress, and among academics and the
general public as to the appropriate federal, state, and local roles in responding to emergencies
(Schneck, D. 2009). There has also been occasions where issues of federalism have crossed paths in
article form with emergency management and

Ocean Acidification Anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide have increased atmospheric CO2
concentrations by over 40% relative to pre industrial levels (IPCC ch2). Measures of atmospheric CO2
do not account for all CO2 emissions because, in addition to the atmosphere, the ocean is a major sink.
The ocean absorbs CO2 at a rate of approximately 7 GtCO2 yr 1. Since 1750, the ocean has absorbed

Eutrophication driven hypoxia is linked to major population centers and river deltas where agricultural

  • 2. Gender Theory And Standpoint Theory Gender Theory and Standpoint Theory Kean University Spring 2015 Anastasia Mendola Society should be socially acceptable to all members of it no matter where they works, how much money they have, or don t have, the color of their skin, there sexual orientation, where the geographically live, etc. when it comes to topic of this nature, most people are very hesitant and don t want to talk about it. Is it because they know that there are problems that need to be fixed, or because they know that no matter how much you talk about the topics it s a lot harder to change the way society is than to just accept it and let it be. The paper discussed the two theories of standpoint theory and the gender theory. They both are present in everyday society but it just isn t that clear at all times. When most people think about the job that they have now or that they will have in the future, they don t think about that where they stand in society will be based off of what one solely knows. That is referring to the standpoint theory. The one main person that helped develop standpoint theory was Dorothy E. Smith. She was born in Great Britain in 1926. She worked as a secretary at a publishing company before she decided to try to get a better job by getting a college degree. She began college at the London School of Economics in 1951, and she received her bachelor s degree in sociology from the London School of Economics in 1955 (Feminist). Smith says that although her years at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Born Free Themes In the movie Born Free, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers play conservationists Joy and George Adamson, who become the surrogate parents of three lion cubs, later giving two to a zoo and keeping Elsa, the smallest of the bunch. As their time with the lioness continues, they are given orders to return her to the wild, where they realize they must return her to her roots among the African Savannah, touching on the theme of nature and the true meaning of freedom. Elsa s legacy within this film is her role as an ambassador like role in being a bridge between mankind and nature in helping understand the limit in humanity s ability to survive alongside the wild. Like humans, animals are capable of emotion. Many people fear creatures like Elsa because they are mainly known for their instinctual and predatorial nature. In the film, John Kendall, George s boss and presumably experienced in wildlife like lions, is fearful of Elsa despite her easygoing and merry attitude with the Adamsons. His position somewhat makes this ironic, as one would not normally fear what they are trying to protect and take care of. Elsa portrays a wide range of emotions that people would usually think she would be unable to comprehend. Elsa expresses sorrow when Joy leaves for town and as she waits for her to come back home, and then elation in Joy s return. Lions and most animals have different ways of communicating their needs and emotions. Humans tend to attribute human interactions to animals actions, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The First Repeated Word Is Child The next repeated word is child. Paul was explaining being a child not only physical appearance but also the spiritually. When a person is mentally and/or physically as a child, the person is not able to connect to God. They are not able to understand what God is trying to communicate, and God is known to communicate through different ways. This is shown by Paul used of Greek word, nepios, which means infant. He was comparing them to infants in their spiritual maturity and love. However, he continues to say as he grows his relationship to God he becomes less like an infant. Therefore, if a person does not pay close attention to what God is saying, the person may lose the meaning and the message of God. Therefore, when Paul said that he has been able to understand God he has left his childish ways of thinking, acting, and speaking. Now that he is a man, he knows that his responsibility is different from those of a child. Now he is responsible to stand up and defend the word of God. Is not and does not are also repetition. Paul wanted to make his statement as clear as possible of what love should look like and should feel like. Not many people do not understand what love is or feels; for this reason, Paul explained that love should not have a negative feeling. That love should not bring people down, rather love should be of support. He explains that a person should not feel successful from the failure of the other person; or that a person should not irritate another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Explain Why The Driving Age Should Not Be Raised The legal driving age should not be raised. The legal age to get a job is sixteen, so it makes sense to also making the legal driving age the same. Parents should not be expected to drive their kids to and from work. Some may argue that they could take public transportation. However, many places, including where I live, do not have daily buses, trains, etc. Another reason the driving age should not be raised is that there are many laws that only affect young drivers that influence them to be responsible. The most accident prone age is 16, which is due to their lack of experience. Raising the legal driving age would just make the new minimum age the most accident prone. Teens need the freedom to drive so they don t have to rely on their parents. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Forensic Science in the 21st Century Forensic Science in the 21st Century Gertrude West Forensic Science and Psychological Profiling /CJA590 May 30, 2011 Edward Baker Forensic Science in the 21st Century Forensic science has various influences on crime, investigation and the people that are involved. Forensic science has a connection with the courts to ensure crimes are getting solved and justice is being served to those that commit crimes. Dissatisfied with the criminal justice system not solving cases fast enough, the public then places astronomical expectations on medical examiners. Real life investigators believing that a lack of competency may be at play when in reality, society has been provided a distorted view of the lengthy, painstaking process involved. According to Nurse Advocacy (2007), People disregard all messages in advertising, since ads commonly present actors and models, but that is simply not how the human mind works. Despite being fiction, media products like this can still influence: our views of the vehicle in question (as the advertiser fervently hopes); the ability of women today to become authoritative, powerful professionals, yet to still have a family (presumably this ad was directed mainly at women who would identify with the surgeon); the basic set up of OR s, the kinds of professionals who participate, how they dress, and what tools they use; and of course, the relative power, knowledge and professional roles of physicians and nurses. Some of this may be unintended, but all of it sells the minivan to the target demographic. All of the elements above contribute to the high credibility of the surgeon, who is, after all, doing the selling. In this manner media also increase the knowledge of those that are committing crimes, what they may not have been doing before they are doing it now. Set on the Nation, a tropical island in the Great Southern Pelagic Ocean, a substitute for the South Pacific, the book details the events that follow a tsunami that causes widespread devastation across the Great Southern Pelagic. Mau, the protagonist, is a member of the community that inhabits the Nation. At the beginning of the novel, Mau is returning from a coming of age ritual on the nearby Boys Island, and survives the tidal wave whilst at sea. He returns to the Nation to find that everybody on the island had been killed by the natural disaster. It is a traditional belief of the Nation that [y]ou left your boy soul [on the Boy s Island] and got given a man soul when you got back to the Nation (14). When departing from the Boys Island to return to the Nation, Mau remarks that [h]e d be like mihei gawi, the little blue hermit crab, scuttling from his shell to a new one once a year, easy prey for any passing squid (16). Shortly after the wave, Mau again identifies as a blue hermit crab, remarking that he [has] no soul [because he did not undergo the ceremonies that would grant one a man soul]. His boy soul had vanished with the island, and he d never get a man soul now. He [is] the blue hermit crab, hurrying from one shell to another, and the big shell he had thought he could see had been taken away (107). At this time, he views his situation negatively. However, he later embraces this identity. He declares that [he is] the little blue hermit crab ... [a]nd [he is] running. But [he will] not be trapped in a shell again, because ... any shell will be too small. [He wants] to know why (174 5). In this quote, he uses any shell as a metaphor for the narrow religious doctrine held by Ataba and the Grandfathers, and expresses his desire for knowledge. As a consequence of the adversity associated with the tidal wave, Mau compares himself to a little blue hermit crab, scuttling between souls. As the novel progresses, Mau accepts and adopts this ... • 8. A Brief Note On Sociological Theory Development Of African... Unit 9 DB 1 Appling Sociological Theory Development Introduction There have been many career criminals, but most of them have been Caucasian, so I decided to see if we had any African male or female career criminals, and despite the myth that there are no black serial killers, there are, but there are very few because, there are not a lot of agencies that keep the statistics of the number of African American serial killers compared with Caucasians. Based on information received from a phone call to Sgt. Thomas from the Augusta, Richmond County Sheriff department he explained to me that the FBI s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime does not maintain statistics for serial killers, and they do not have any type of national repository that can keep up let alone track the race or number of serial killers throughout the U.S. So, from my source of contact I am incline to believe that the FBIs has never been able to create a nonspecific profile for a serial killer nor a set physiognomies that someone can examine or look out for. Moreover, serial killers tend to span all racial groups. There are Asian, white, Hispanic, and African American serial killers. Basically, the racial diversification of serial killers usually mirrors that of the overall population. Religious Symbolism in Painting The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius by Carlo Crivelli The artist Carlo Crivelli painted The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius in the 15th century. Noticeably, Crivelli s portrayal of the Annunciation differs vastly to the one actually presented in Luke 1:26 38 of the Bible. For instance, Jesus coming was said to have been announced to Mary in Nazareth, a town in Galilee (Luke 1:26). A similarity with the actual Annunciation is the presence of the Archangel Gabriel as in the Bible, he was sent to the Virgin Mary to announce the imminent arrival of baby Jesus. Fame is no longer about the deed behind it, but simply the spectacle Hitler made the cover of Time magazine seven times, Stalin following with 12 covers of his own. The line between people we love to love and people we love to hate is becoming thinner and blurred, so we thrust not only heroes into the public view but also villains . This confusion between fame and celebrity owes a lot to the change in newspapers over time; where once they delivered unbiased and detailed factual accounts on events that happened, in the new age of mass media they began to compete with the magazines. Tabloidisation meant that rather than objective articles based on fact we were instead victim to the murder hype , with sensation fuelled stories about the latest fashionable murder trial, the papers giving the killers their own stage name and persona to match. The idea of giving serial killers their own moniker is something that has contributed tremendously to the glamorisation of killers, because it is much like a stage name that you would give an actor or a singer. The names can either relate to the act or style of killings i.e Jack The Ripper, which conjures a mental image of the killer at work or could be to do with their location as in The Boston Strangler . Masakado does not seek government help in deterring Yokishane, this suggests that he knew he was in the wrong and was hesitant to return to Kyoto, mainly because he felt as if he got lucky at his previous hearing. Skipping to Masakado s confrontation with Sadamori in Hitachi, as Masakado wins the battle, storming the provincial capital grounds in the process, one gets a sense of the sudden panic defining his proceeding actions. Masakado immediately flees home to Shimosa. Once home, in an utterly confusing turn of events, Masakado heads out again, this time to conquer a handful of other eastern provinces. Instead of formerly addressing the rulers in Kyoto as the new emperor of the east or even as an adversary, Masakado writes a letter in an attempt to explain his actions and how they are justified. Using his imperial family ties, he tries to undermine the stories of his actions as propaganda from his opposers and claim that he remains loyal to the government. This is the act of a desperate man; a man who, maybe, has realized that he has made a grave mistake. Masakado wanted to believe that his conquests were justified, yet based on his actions it is apparent that he was not and knew it. Not having a strong cause and knowing he made a ... • 28. Gingival Stereotypes In Syria There are several differences among the male and female populations of Syria. In Syria, the average height of males is five feet, eight inches and females are generally five feet, one and a half inches ( Average , 2016). Syrians are stereotyped as having olive toned skin, black eyes, and black hair, but in fact, many have very light skin, brown or blonde hair, and blue or green eyes (Das, 2017). A native group, the Kurds, have light skin, green eyes, and blonde hair (Das, 2017). A majority of this population have almond shaped eyes. Gingival biotypes may affect dental treatment success. • 29. Wrestling As A Social Phenomenon Professional Wrestling is a world renowned topic that has universally shaped the lives of many individuals around the world. There is no denying that professional wrestling is firmly entrenched as a part of modern culture. Wrestling has become a multimillion dollar industry with a very long history dating back hundreds of years. I have decided to write about and discuss the lack of explanation sociologists have when describing wrestling as a social phenomenon. The reason I have decided to write about this topic is because as a child I was fascinated by pro wrestling, more specifically, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). I feel that wrestling has played an important role in my development socially, emotionally, and physically. To begin, it is important to understand that wrestling is above and beyond a spectacle as described by Roland Barthes. Wrestling is an investment in one s self. It is an accumulation of countless hours spent on the wrestling mat, in the gym, and in the studio. It is a display of hegemonic masculinity to its highest degree, wrestlers understand this. Professional Wrestlers understand that the nature of the sport is tough, unforgiving, and requires a superhero attitude. The common goals shared amongst the wrestling culture have a distinct impact on how wrestlers identify themselves to society. Socially, wrestling has not been analyzed as closely as it should be. Subconsciously, individuals who attend or express an interest in professional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Child G And The Main Components Of The Phonetic Stage Child G is 6 years old female and her parents express that she enjoys writing both in school and at home. Her older sister goes to sleepaway camp during the summer months and so in this piece of writing Child G talks about her weekend at her sister s camp reunion. This writing is part of a weekly classroom activity, weekend news . According to Gentry s five stages of spelling development, Child G s writing suggests she is in the phonetic stage, with some examples of transitional writing present (Gentry, 1982). In this piece of writing, the spelling of words has been based on the sounds they hear, one of the main components of the phonetic stage. This is most evident in the way she has spelt reunion, as reyouyen. This may be understood better by child G with the use of syllable games, such as clapping as saying words aloud to hear how many syllables are present. However, Child G does show knowledge of the rules with regards to words ending in e, which is evident in side. The National Curriculum states that children of this age should understand such rule (Department for Education, 2013a), which indicates that Child G is progressing into the transitional stage, and is starting to become less dependent on sounds when writing (Wyse et al. 2013). In order for Child G to sit comfortably in the transitional stage the child s teachers and parents/carers could use several methods. The Look Cover Say Write Check method is a popular technique adopted in schools, an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The play is interwoven with dynamic characterisation, striking symbolism and intense moments of drama. Although Rose positions Juror 8 as the hero, the strongest character is in fact Juror 4, who is an independent thinker, rational and calm even as tension begins to build. Although Juror 4 initially votes guilty, he is able to admit his fault and change his vote. The ability to remain independent proved to be the most important character trait of Juror 4. Jones Biological Sciences Student, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853 2401 e mail: rj246@cornell.edu Abstract The gram negative bacteria Serratia marcescens has gained attention in recent years for its tendency to cause nosocomial infections in humans, as well as its development of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance in a bacterium that is harmful to humans can be concerning as it can result in infections that are difficult to treat. In order to find out more about the growing antibiotic resistance of S. marcescens, this experiment used the disc diffusion method to test the susceptibility of S. marcescens to two varieties of antibiotics that were known to have success against some gram negative bacterium: streptomycin and ampicillin. These antibiotics were, respectively, an aminoglycoside and a beta lactam. The experiment tested which of the two that S. marcescens had developed more of a resistance to. The zones of inhibition of the discs were significantly larger for discs treated with streptomycin compared to discs treated with ampicillin. This led to the conclusion that S. marcescens is less resistant to streptomycin than to ampicillin. Key Words: Serratia marcescems, antibiotic resistance, streptomycin, ampicillin INTRODUCTION While the bacteria S. marcescens was considered to be harmless in the past, it has been identified in recent years as a cause of serious ... Essay on Federal Disaster Planning and Relief This paper will discuss information on the federal disaster planning and relief program, and explain how the program raises issues of federalism, and the pros and cons from two perspectives. Disaster planning is the development and documenting of a plan that will allow an organization to recover from a catastrophic event. It should include procedures that are appropriate to the function and size of the business (Bucki, J.) As where disaster relief is the services or monies available to individuals, families, and communities who have suffered from some form of a catastrophic disaster such as: Floods Hurricanes Earthquakes Drought Tornadoes Riots (New World Encyclopedia) When these catastrophic disasters happen, an ... List of Catastrophic Disasters Hurricane Katrina Hurricane Rita 9/11 California Wildfires Midwest Floods How Disaster Planning and Relief Raise Issues of Federalism The American form of Federalism has been argued as one of the main challenges to an effective response. For instance, conflicting goals may create tension between different levels of government agencies, local authorities may be reluctant to turn responsibilities over for dealing with the emergency to federal and state entities, and there may be various degrees and forms of collaboration (Schneck, D. 2009). Issues with federalism surfaced within several contexts in 2005, for instance, The REAL ID Act, federal requirements associated with Temporary Aid to Needy Families reauthorization, the Terri Schiavo case, state and local government opposition to the No Child Left behind Act, and senate confirmation hearings for Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, and the delayed and poorly coordinated intergovernmental response to Hurricane Katrina and Rita also generated debate in Congress, and among academics and the general public as to the appropriate federal, state, and local roles in responding to emergencies (Schneck, D. 2009).
