2. An operating theater (also known as
an operating room, operating
suite, operation theatre, operation
suite or OR) is a facility within
a hospital where surgical operations are
carried out in a sterile environment.

11.  Cardiothoracic surgery (also known as thoracic
surgery) is the field of medicine involved in surgical
treatment of organs inside the thorax (the chest)—
generally treatment of conditions of the heart (heart
disease) and lungs (lung disease).
 Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics, also
spelled orthopaedic[s], is the branch
of surgery concerned with conditions involving
the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use
both surgical and nonsurgical means to
treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports
injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors,
and congenital disorders.

16.  The protocols of OT include:
Preparation of patient
Preparation of surgeon
Hand washing
Gown wearing
Gloves
OT sterilization & air flow patterns
Management of spills & body slashes

 Hospitalization 2-3 days prior to surgery
 A good bath to clean all the dirt from the body
 Outside clothing should be discarded and clean hospital
clothing is provided.
Preparation of surgeon:
Showering
OT dress, cap, masks, eye protection, foot wear.

36. INFECTION CONTROL

37. Sterilization:
The process by which an article is made free of all
living organisms either in vegetative or in spore state.
Disinfection:
The destruction or removal of all organisms capable
of giving rise to infection.

38. Antiseptic:
A chemical that is applied to living tissue, such as
mucous membrane or skin to reduce the number of
organisms present, through inhibition of their activity or
destruction.
Disinfectants:
A chemical that is used on non-vital objects to kill
surface vegetative pathogenic organisms but not
necessarily spore forms/viruses.

operating room storage ,lounges,dressing
rooms ,restrooms and showers,sleeping
facilities and adminisrative offices.
•One must be prepared to justify request for
spaces and generate budgets.

•Determine the number and type of operating room
in the suite.
•Determine the equipment specific to each OR.
•Include storage needs of all services such as
nursing,hospital monitoring,house keeping etc…
•Project future storage needs of various services.

•The lounge is area of retreat from the ends of the
operating room.
•The specific function of lounge is snacking and
dinning.
•It can be also used for dictation , entering patient
orders , conference
•Computers with access to the hospital information
system seem essential in every lounges

51. DRESSING ROOMS
•The location of the dressing rooms within
the operating room is important.
•Security Is another major need
•Conventional key based lockers must be
installed.
•Linen control is very important while
designing a dressing room.

53. SLEEPING FACILITIES
•Determine exactly who should sleep near the
operating room. Then calculate the number of
individuals who will require sleeping facilities at one
time.
•Sound proofing is desirable so that everyone is not
awakened when one person watches television
,receives phone calls.
•Showers and toilets should be adjucent .
•Landline telephones television and internet access is
desirable.
