Paul Laurence Dunbar s Work
By: Paul Laurence Dunbar Paul Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio, on June 27, 1872. Both of his parents,
Joshua and Matilda Dunbar, were slaves. Shortly after Paul was born his parents separated. Paul was driven by
his parent s life story to write poetry. In school Paul would edit the newspaper for the school along with being
a member of the literary and debate societies. As Paul grew older he began writing and was a very intelligent
student in school, he and his family did not have much money; therefore he had to put his college career on
hold. Paul took a job as an elevator operator, which gave him opportunities to write. He was invited to read his
poems at a meeting one evening and from that night he was repeatedly asked to events to read. In 1893, at age
21, Paul self published a series called Oak and Ivy. To cover the cost of the publication, Dunbar sold copies to
the people who rode the elevator for one dollar. Dunbar moved to Chicago later that year. By 1895, Dunbar
had poems published in popular newspapers and magazines. Frederick Douglass, a fan of Dunbar s work,
called him the most promising colored man in America (Project MUSE). While in Chicago, Dunbar had
written many poems and stories. He wrote eleven poems, four short stories, five novels, and a play before his
death at thirty three. He had several unpublished short stories and poems that brought him a lot of attention at
his readings. A few years later, Dunbar went on a 6 month tour of England to read his

Labor Relation In The Workplace
Introduction
The age of technology has changed communication in both our personal and professional lives with the advent
of social media. Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and others have global connections to the external world. The
readiness of I pads, laptops and smart phones has provided both the individual and organizations alike to have
instantaneous engagement to a broad and large audience over one or all of the social media networks. The
relationship between the employee and the organization can be tested if company social media policies are to
broad or restrict the employee s rights under the labor laws protected by the National Labor Relation Act
(NLRA) under Section 7 and Section 8. On the other hand, the organization is seeking ... Show more content

recommend that the company should voluntarily settle with the union to address the matter, due to the
ambiguous or broad SMP that infringe or interfere with Souza s rights under Section 7 and Section 8 of the
National Labor Relation Act. Further, the AMR supervisor s refusal to allow Souza her rights under the

Analysis Of Detroit Industry Murals By Diego Rivera
I choose to write about the Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera. Rivera was a prominent Mexican painter
who was commissioned to paint murals based on Detroit s history and development of industry. The work is
from the early modern age (1933). The murals depict the interior of the Ford automotive plant on the river
Rough. I found it interesting that although the paintings represent a flourishing town and industry; in reality
when Rivera first began to work on them, Detroit was still struggling to reclaim its pre depression glory. Even
though many workers had lost their jobs at Ford, Rivera immortalized them and their contributions in his
creations. Whether or not they were appropriate at the time is subjective.
There was political turbulence,

Horton Vs. California Case Essay
DuPont1 Dylan DuPont 10/22/16 CJA 356 criminal evidence Week 4 final paper Horton vs. California On
June 4th, 1990, Terry Brice Horton vs. California was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court
held 7 2 that the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit warrantless seizure of evidence, which is granted due to
the plain view doctrine. The discovery of the evidence does not have to be inadvertent, although that is a
characteristic of most legitimate plain view seizures. The victim was Erwin Wallaker he was robbed of jewelry
and cash, in his own garage by two men, one armed with a machine gun and one with a stun gun. Wallaker
heard enough of the robber s conversation to identify Horton s voice. His identification was partially
corroborated by a witness who saw the robbers leaving the scene and by evidence that Horton had attended a
coin show. Sergeant LaRault determined there was enough evidence to search Horton s home, and obtained a
warrant to do so. His affidavit for the search warrant described both the weapons and the proceeds of the
robbery, but the warrant only granted permission to look for the stolen property. While searching Horton s
house, Sergeant LaRault did not find the property, but he did find an Uzi machine gun, a .38 caliber revolver,
two stun guns, and a handcuff key, along with other items linking Horton to the crime. The evidence was
admitted into the trial, and Horton was found guilty of armed robbery. Horton Argued that the

Respiratory Syncytial Virus
A mother brings their toddler in to the clinic, with what they think is a cold but a nurse wonders if the child
could possibly have respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). A cold and RSV are a lot alike, in the way that they
both may come across as cold like symptoms, but this is not the case. Throughout this report one will find out
what the differences between a common cold and RSV are, the signs and symptoms a toddler may have with
this virus, the treatments one may face and ways to prevent this awful and dangerous virus. The purpose of
this report is to deepen one s understanding of the respiratory syncytial virus and explain the dangerous ...

RSV will usually affect one s upper respiratory tract first before affecting the lower. It is also more common
that this virus will affect someone s upper respiratory rather than the lower respiratory. Someone with an upper
respiratory infection may come across as having the common cold, tonsillitis, the flu, and etc. The flu is also
able to occur in someone who has a lower respiratory tract infection, as well as, bronchitis, pneumonia,
bronchiolitis, and tuberculosis ( Respiratory Tract Infections, 2014).
RSV is a virus that is hard to diagnosis because the signs and symptoms are a lot like the common cold. One
may start to develop a runny nose or decrease in appetite the first couple of days when having this virus; but
coughing, sneezing, and wheezing may also occur. In young infants, they may experience irritability or
difficulties with breathing ( CDC, 2014). One may have this virus before realizing the symptoms like a dry
cough, low grade fever, sore throat or headache (Mayo Clinic, 1998). Someone with an upper respiratory tract
infection may have a fever, headache, sore throat or wheezing; whereas someone with a lower respiratory tract
infection may have a cough, increased breathing rate, tightness in the chest. While both tract infections should
be taken seriously, they both can lead to RSV.
Bronchitis and Bronchiolitis are also two very serious infections that may lead to RSV.

How Racial Profiling Led to the Death of Trayvon Martin
Racial Profiling
As I walk to the store to pick up snacks for the next half of the super bowl, I am trying to make it quick. I
finally arrive at the store and quickly get my two favorite items, skittles and an ice tea. Thinking to myself that
this is all I need, not knowing that it would be my last meal. On the walk back home, I have a feeling that I am
being followed. I speed up. I turn around to find that a grown Hispanic man, mid age, and heavily built is in
fact, following me. In my head, I just want to make it home safely. Every move I make, he makes the same
moves. Finally I turn around, quite nervous, to see if there was a problem. Next thing I know, we are on the

A person may not be a threat to society, but just because a citizen or officer of the law felt like they were does
that make it okay to take matters in their own hands? Law enforcement has a job to protect, if their racial
profiling judgment is in fact wrong, they can lose trust and creditability. Through there may have been cases
were racial profiling has worked, due to luck; the cases in which they have been wrong have ended in
devastating ways. Racial profiling continues to be a prevalent and egregious form of discrimination in the
United States.
Racial profiling is discrimination, and discrimination is wrong. Discrimination taints the entire criminal justice
system. Racial profiling is nothing but public stereotyping. Therese extreme tactics make the justice system
look bad in cases which their racial profiling was incorrect. It publicly puts all races in once category, bad or
good. Discrimination has being going on for years and years in history. African Americans are one group of
people who have worked so hard not to be discriminated against, and with racial profiling they are constantly
being brought back down to the Jim Crow Era. When will it ever stop?
Racial profiling does not work and it is used for the wrong reason. History shows that racial profiling have
been going on for years, and in most cases they are false. In 2006, Sean Bell, a 23 year old man was

Hiv And Treatment Adherence By Bobbi Marie Pollard
HIV and Treatment Adherence
Bobbi Marie Pollard
Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a chronic illness,
however, for those with access to health care and treatment, it is a very manageable condition. Although it is
no longer considered a death sentence in developed countries, it is still a highly stigmatized illness. The public
may no longer perceive HIV as the plague it once was, yet there has been no decline in the number of new
infections per year in the past decade in the United States (Catalan et al., 2000). Today, people are living
longer with HIV due to the development of combination antiretroviral drug therapies (ART). ART has
provided significant progress in treatment (Linsk et al., 2002). Treatment accessibility and medication
adherence are crucial in order to continue manage the disease on both the individual and public level.
Overview of HIV/AIDS
HIV and AIDS are sometimes used interchangeably, although there is a significant difference, and some HIV
positive individuals will never develop Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Testing HIV positive
means there are antibodies present in the system. HIV is classified into two phases: symptomatic and
asymptomatic. Individuals show signs of a compromised immune system during the symptomatic phase,
although with treatment advances, many are living asymptomatically. The progress of the illness can often be
evaluated by looking at one s CD4 and viral load

Aldous Huxley s Impact On American Society
Most Americans place the rise of psychedelic and hallucinogenic drug use in the 1970 s, but Aldous Huxley,
author and English scholar, was ahead of his time. Starting in the 1940 s, Huxley began using a hallucinogenic
drug under the watch of a psychiatrist conducting a clinical study as he wrote novels. One of his best known
novels, written while he was using psychedelics such as mescaline and LSD, is Island, a story set on the
imaginary island of Pala in Southeast Asia. Pala appears to be a utopian society, untouched by the Western
influences of capitalism and widespread industrial areas with high consumerism. One of the main pillars of
Palanese society is use of a psychedelic drug called moksha medicine for enlightenment, mind expansion, ...

His own experimentation and use of hallucinogenic drugs changed his perception of the world, which bled into
his writing. The psychiatrist Humphrey Osmond accepted Huxley as a test subject for mescaline, a
hallucinogenic similar to LSD, in the mid 1940 s. These drug induced experiences were, for Huxley, of
mystical import and supported beliefs in the wisdom of Eastern teachings (Aliprandi, Aldous Huxley: Early
Life and Works ). Unlike the drug he invented in his earlier book A Brave New World, which was called soma
and acted as a depressant to relax the mind, the mescaline and psychedelic drugs introduced in Island could
expand the human mind, rather than pacify it. Huxley used LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs often,
enjoying their mind opening abilities and which allowed him to contemplate which reality was true, the sober
reality or his drug induced journey through his own mind. The drugs were such an integral part of him that he
requested them upon death, and, His wife honored his request to be administered LSD on this deathbed

Benefits Of Instruction Accessible For College Or Expert...
Instruction assumes a key part in deciding how you spend your grown up life a more elevated amount of
training means higher profit, better wellbeing, and a more extended life. By the same token, the long haul
social and monetary expenses of instructive disappointment are high. Those without the abilities to take part
socially and monetarily create higher expenses for wellbeing, pay bolster, tyke welfare and government

Value in training upgrades social union and trust. This Policy Brief takes a gander at how to enhance value in
training in three key approach spaces: the configuration of instruction frameworks, hones both all through
school, and resourcing. It proposes ten stages which would help diminish school disappointment and dropout
rates, make society more pleasant and help stay away from the huge social expenses of minimized grown ups
with couple of essential aptitude.
Value in instruction has two measurements. The principal is reasonableness, which essentially means verifying
that individual and social circumstances for instance sexual orientation, financial status or ethnic beginning
ought not be an obstruction to accomplishing instructive potential. The second is incorporation, as such
guaranteeing an essential least standard of instruction for all for instance that everybody ought to have the
capacity to peruse, compose and do basic math. The two measurements are nearly entwined: handling school
disappointment serves to defeat the impacts of social hardship which regularly causes school disappointment.
Both equity and fairness are issues for OECD countries. Kids from poorer homes in most OECD nations are

Sociological Theory
INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY
Compare and contrast the views of three appropriate sociological perspectives to an area of social life of your
choosing. Why do we act the way we do? Does the mass media really affect the way a people in a society
behave? Sociologists focus on the environment and the social aspects of human behaviour in order to answer
questions like these when studying a particular society. A society is defined as a large social group that shares
the same geographical territory and is governed by the same political authority and cultural expectations.
Culture is defined as the shared values of a society such as language, beliefs and ways of doing things (Burton,
2013, online). When looking at a society there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Functionalism was introduced by Emile Durkheim (1858 1917), who is considered by many intellectual
thinkers to be the founder of modern sociology. The main principle of functionalism is that each part of a
society is interdependent and contributes towards making society work as a whole. Each of these parts has to
be working correctly but if something does go wrong then society has mechanisms to deal with them, such as
the police and the legal system. Functionalists also believe that every social institution has many important
functions to perform (Burton, 2013, online). Durkheim introduced the theory anomie , or lack of social norms ,
that could cause instability or chaos. This concept bought to light many instances that could affect a society in
a negative way and especially the behaviour of individuals towards one another (Emile Durkheim org, 2013,
online). Another concept put forward by Durkheim the sum of all of its parts is larger than the whole , defined
at the introduction of the structural/functionalist theory, is as relevant today as it was when first introduced
(Gamble, 2008, Online). Robert K. Merton (1910 2003) is one example of how Durkheim s theories have
lasted through the ages because his theory of anomie was taken directly from Durkheim s perspective and still
remains a major theory in the structure of society, both in criminal justice and sociology (cited in

Human Resource Professionals And Human Resources
Organisations of all kinds face changes in their environment, and there is a need for individuals who are

function. There are several reasons for this trend: Human resource professionals have become business
partners over the past decade, demonstrating the value they can add to the business Leaders are looking for
where the change process can best be managed Most business strategies require major changes in people
related issues, Human Resource professionals develop and manage the key people systems needed to support

organisation. The role of HR has changed from being a mostly administrative role to becoming a force that

The international relationships between the United States and other nations are of extreme importance. These

Analysis Of Micro Skills Model ( Soler )
As soon as my client and I started recording the session, I found myself focusing very hard on Egan s (2001)
micro skills model (SOLER). Although, the way I introduced myself to my client was not entirely incoherent,
watching the video back, I was able to notice trembling in my voice, and I was almost nervous laughing. We
had already agreed on the positioning of the chairs before filming, however the room the session was taking
place in wasn t big enough, and we therefore found ourselves a little cramped. Nevertheless, the room size
didn t become too much of a problem, as I was still able to position myself accordingly, allowing myself to
face my client squarely enough. My posture remains open throughout the session, although I have noticed I
didn t lean in towards the client at any point. I remember during the session I did keep thinking, should I lean
in soon? , but I could never find a moment where I d be able to lean in naturally, and without having to force
myself to do so. I certainly think for this specific aspect of counselling, I was focusing too much on making
sure I was giving a counselling session properly, instead of forgetting about the camera and letting myself flow
into it naturally. I tried my upmost hardest to maintain eye contact throughout the session, however it is
something I struggle with on a regular basis anyway. I can never pinpoint where the line is between

Theory Of Tests Of Passive Sufficiency Essay
KPE160H1F FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT
ASSIGNMENT #1
1. Theory of Tests of Passive Sufficiency (3 marks)
a. In order to test the passive sufficiency of a bi articular structure, such as a muscle, both joints which that
structure crosses must first be identified. Additionally, the movements of those two joints which will constrain
that structure must be identified. Next, one joint must be selected, and placed into the position that may
constrain the structure. At the same time, the other joint must be placed in the position which will not put
further strain on that structure. The selected joint must then be measured for its range of motion. Next, the
same must be done with the selected joint, but in contrast, the other joint must be placed in the position which
WILL further constrain the bi articular structure. Once that has been done, the selected joint s range of motion
must be measured once more.
If the range of motion of the selected joint is equal when the other joint is in both positions, the bi articular
structure is passively sufficient. If the range of motion of the selected joint is smaller in the selected joint when
the other joint is in a position that will put further strain on the bi articular structure, that structure is not
passively sufficient.
b. The rectus femoris crosses both the hip and knee. In order to test its passive sufficiency, either of the joints
ranges of motion could be measured. In this example, range of motion will be measured at the

Distinguish Between Micro, Mecio And Macro Levels Of Practice
Distinguish between micro, mezzo and macro levels of practice and provide an example for each. There are
various differences between micro, mezzo and macro levels of practice. The micro level consists of a one on
one session with the social worker to strengthen the client s coping skills and self esteem. The micro is based
on an individual level referring to the day to day setting inhabited by the person and people they live with. It
focuses on the individual or family. Examples include finding housing for the individual, healthcare or
substance abuse help. It expands as the person grows. An example would be drawing a diagram with the
individual or family being the focus and everything outside of that circle would be affecting the family or
individual in several ways. The focus is on the micro level because it pertains to either the individual or the
family.
The mezzo level is about the individual s surrounding environment. It pertains to neighborhoods, schools and
other entities. It is about providing services for the neighborhood or community. For example, the focus may
be on making schools aware of certain mental health services and helping them obtain them.
The macro level is the organization, assumptions, myths, and ideologies of the larger world. The universe
hosting the smaller systems. An example of this would be lobby days; individuals come together to advocate
for a larger scale policy change. Once the change occurs, it will affect everything within that

Garland writes, He was of small account that is, he had by his actions manifested an attitude which was
contemptible. (Garland,97) Job had an attitude that s similar to our when we don t understand what God is
doing in our lives. He felt like a coward the moment that he gave up but he also used that moment when he
was feeling low to let God speak to him. Job recognized God had all authority and Job had to listen.
In this passage, Job taught us to listen to the Lord despite our hurt or our belief that something is possible. This
means that we have to trust in the Lord that his will for our lives will be done.
Because we have to trust Gods authority over our lives, we also have to trust God s love for our lives. In the
book, How to read Job, the authors write,
One of the ways we trust God s wisdom is by refraining from inquiring why God did such a thing to us, or
why he allowed it to happen. (Walton, 136)
The first step to knowing that God loves us is to not get caught up in the pain of our suffering,

Women s Rights Is The Fight For Equality
Women s rights is the fight for the idea that women should have equal rights with men. Over history, this has
taken the form of gaining property rights, the women s suffrage, or the right of women to vote, reproductive
rights, and the right to work for for equal pay. Women were conditioned to be treated like second class citizens
solely because of their gender until a crucial movement in American history during the late nineteenth century
that would inspire a long fight for equality for generations to come. The American women s movement was a
tedious yet extraordinarily important movement that challenged the social norms of a patriarchal society for
their own recognition. Overall, this paper will discuss the importance of women s labor ... Show more content

First Women s Rights Convention was held in 1848. Approximately 300 activists meet in Seneca Falls, N.Y.,
to plan on how to achieve women s suffrage nationwide. Partakers, including Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth
Cady Stanton, mark the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, formed on the Declaration of
Independence, which calls for equivalent treatment of women and men under the law and voting rights for
women.
The main organizer of the Seneca Falls Convention was Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who is deemed as one of the
most important people that made an important change in women s rights. Stanton drafted the Declaration of
Sentiments, Grievances, and Resolutions, that related to the Declaration of Independence. We hold these truths
to be self evident: that all men and women are created equal. Among the 13 resolutions set forth in Stanton s
Declaration was the goal of achieving the sacred right of franchise (History, Art and Archives). They stated the
injustices and discrimination that women had to face with, they wanted the United States to adopt laws that
protected the rights of married women, granting them the right to own property in their own name, keep their

Feminist Perspective On Human Trafficking
Through International Relations theory lenses, especially the Feminist lens, the issue of human trafficking is
easily identified as an international crisis. Not only is this a human rights and security issue, but a gendered
one at that. Approximately 80% of the exploitation that comes from human trafficking is in a sexual nature,
and a majority of trafficking victims are female ( 11 Facts about Human Trafficking ). There is a clear stance
from the feminist theory perspective that it is the states responsibility, and even duty, to protect vulnerable
females from subjugation and mistreatment that comes from the global human trafficking system. Economic,
cultural, and social factors influence the condition in which women are susceptible to being trafficked. A
destabilized region, whether it be political, civil, or military unrest, results in the increase of human
trafficking. These dangers within the state lead to displacements in population, as many attempt to migrate out
of the region into safer territories ( Addressing the Root Causes ). BBC News reports of similar instances in
Albania, a country in which trafficking took hold in the years after the collapse of communism in 1990 (
Human trafficking: Poor women and girls targeted in Albania 2017). The victims in Albania are promised false
employment opportunities before being sold into prostitution rings and brothels. The Feminist theory

Terror And Horror
The first gothic novels were called gothic because of their medieval aesthetic, but further gothic fiction was
recognizable for the use of other conventions: persecuted heroines, empowered villains, young heroes, ruined
castles, labyrinths, convents... but mainly, because the aim of such stories was to shock and terror the readers.
That aim is still present today in everything that falls under the label of gothic : the gothic has to shock and
distress and its way to achieve that is by including the element of fear in its narratives. But, how is fear
produced? A first step towards the recreation of that element is by using certain images that produce strong

SYRIAN CIVIL WAR
Gen
1. The Syrian civil war also commonly known as the Syrian uprising is an ongoing armed conflict in Syria
between forces loyal to the Syrian Baath Party government and those seeking to oust it. The conflict began on
15 March 2011, with popular demonstrations that grew nationwide by April 2011. These demonstrations were
part of the wider Middle Eastern protest movement known as the Arab Spring. Protesters demanded the
resignation of President Bashar al Assad, whose family has held the presidency in Syria since 1971, as well as
the end to over four decades of Baath Party rule. In April 2011, the Syrian Army was deployed to quell the
uprising. After months of military sieges, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

because of the government s response to the crisis, but granted the Syrian National Coalition, Syria s seat on 6
March 2013. The Arab League also sent an observer mission in December 2011, as part of its proposal for

Countless leaders, revolutionaries, and scholars have discerned that only through the trials of experience are
we able to clearly identify an established pursuit. This prospect of a delayed reward seemingly motivates us to
continue in our endeavors. Finding little relevance in experiences void of challenge or difficulty, we discern
our interests largely through the upheaval of current understanding. As we mature we realize that we must first
embrace where we came from if we hope to continue to develop, to adapt, and to modify and so we recognize
that our past experiences have all undoubtedly led us to here.

Ethical and Legal Issues in Magazines
Ethical and legal issues
According to D. E. Summer and S. Rhoades in Magazines: a complete guide to the industry; magazines face
the same legal and ethical issues than newspapers: [...] plagiarism, libel, slander, invasion of privacy, editorial
bias, and inaccuracy [1]. Indeed, there are some limits to what a journalist can write, an editor can publish, a
photographer can photograph, and a designer can design. Magazines go sometimes beyond the ethical or legal
bounds. All these issues are parts of the decision making process that magazines have to handle.

It is the editor s responsibility to draw the limit between the editorial content and what advertisers want.
Advertisers also give controversial ads that can raise some ethical problems for the readers. Some examples of
controversial ads such as Benetton, Tom ford Perfume, Dolce Gabbana, American Apparel or a French
campaign against Aids (a man making love to a giant black scorpion)[6] have been seen in most famous
fashion magazines. They are always racial, ethnicity or sexual oriented which can be good when it creates a
buzz but also can be associated with the magazine s image and may damage the latter (obviously it depends
also on the magazine s policy, conservative or not).
The code of ethics (several are available) is a set of rules that can help journalists to make the right decision, a
sort of written standards that can be used as guidelines and there are not binding. According to the code of
ethics, journalists should seek the truth and report it, minimize harm, act independently, and be accountable. It
can be used as a general guideline but cannot be followed exactly as it is, because it may be too vague to be
applied and sometimes it does not give clear cut advice, does not fit with the magazines policy or does not
correspond to the writer, editor, photographer or designer s point of view, value or principles. When the code
of ethic is not useful enough, then they have to check with their own personal ethics which means taking a

Comparison Of Terry Fox And Maurice Richard
Terry Fox and Maurice Richard Canada s history is rich with leaders willing to bring change. Terry Fox and
Maurice Richard are two different notable Canadians who both had similar historical significance and
leadership abilities. This essay will be addressing their historical significance through the quantity of lives
they affected across the country and the durability of the impacts still evident today, and their leadership
ability of displaying determination by showing resilience in the face of adversity. Terry Fox affected the lives
of many across the country. For instance, Terry Fox helped cancer patients by increasing their chances of
survival with the money he raised from the Marathon of Hope (terryfox.org). Terry also gave cancer patients
courage, and inspired hope to see that cancer does not kill their spirit (rw.runnersworld.com). Furthermore,
Terry is an inspiration to cancer researchers, scientists, clinicians, and countless students across the country.
Cancer researcher Dr. Ling, who wears a Terry Fox T shirt as his pajamas as a reminder of who he is and what
he s done, told VICE Sports. That is the impact that he had on myself (sports.vice.com). Evidently, Terry
affected virtually every Canadian s life. Almost one in every two Canadians is expected to be diagnosed with

Benedict suggested that the isolation of monks from the society was essential for the following reason. The
founders of monasticism recognized that secular society functions both to encourage the pursuit of sex, power
and possessions and to limit the potential destructiveness of these pursuits . Therefore, the Western monastic
life provided the alternative: Instead of the pursuit of sex, the monks vowed celibacy; instead of the pursuit of
power, he vowed obedience; instead of seeking possessions, he vowed poverty . In other words, the
community both increases the pressure on the monks to understand their own souls, and decreases the chances
of temptation of sin that may be provoked by the society. In addition, the complete Isolation of the community
from the society also provides support and encouragement for the distinctive religious practice. Benedict
required a life of obedience for monks that live within Western community, stability of residence and moral
straggle. The abbot was to be chosen by the monks; once chosen, he had full authority over all decisions
relating to the monastery and the individuals within it . In other words, the obedience, humility and patience
were supreme virtues of the monks. According to Benedict, the main duty of monks a social

Essay on Divine Intellect in Dante s Inferno
Divine Intellect in Dante s Inferno
In Canto XI of Dante s Inferno, Virgil carefully explains the layout of hell to his student, Dante. Toward the
end of his speech, Virgil says that Sodom and Cahors are speak[ing] in passionate contempt of God, (XI, 50
51), and divine will thus relegates them to the seventh circle. The sin of the Sodomites is clear for Dante, who
poses no question on the matter, sodomy perhaps being an obvious affront to God which the bible directly
addresses. However, the sin of Cahors, namely usury, is not clear to Dante. He asks Virgil to unravel the knot
in his mind, since there is no obvious reason why a usurer a money lender essentially deserves any punishment
at all for a crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, Dante is on Virgil s level in one sense, and far below him in another, which is true in the grand scheme
of the work: Dante is only beginning to understand the workings of the divine order by Canto XI, while Virgil
borders on omniscience throughout. Furthermore, Dante has not yet eclipsed Virgil as a poet, since at this
point the Inferno is hardly begun, while the Aeneid presents Virgil s view of Hades from top to bottom..
In Dante s hell specifically, the reason that usury is a deadly sin is very confusing, which is why Dante calls it
a knot. Unlike other sins, usury is not on its face a dreadful immorality. Virgil approaches the issue at first
philosophically, making the profoundly esoteric claim that nature follows... the Divine Intellect and the Divine
Art. The idea nature is therefore composed of these two abstract elements. The Intellect, coming first, must be
at the root of the Art, since intellect must precede production, as in the Platonic doctrine of the essence of a
thing preceding the existence of a thing. The Intellect is the potential; the art is the result. In concrete terms,
the Intellect must therefore be the primordial stuff from which everything is made, and the Art therefore must
be the process of making it into something tangible or usable. From this, then, we can deduce

Antoine Henri Jomini
The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were turbulent eras generating several changes in the way how
commanders led the war. The world owes a debt to one man for interpreting and recording his contributions to
strategy and the art of war: Antoine Henri Jomini. The purpose of this paper to explain why the Jomini s
theories are a school of thoughts that remain adequate for explaining warfare in the modern era. The
importance of logistics, the acceptance of principles of war, and the concept of the geometry of battlespace
proposed by Jomini s theories are three broad concepts that are still adequate for explaining in the modern era.
Incorporating the logistics in the planning process is a key task to achieve important military outcomes.

Mallick argues that The Principles of War are the principles expressing the rules of military thought and
actions that serve as the permanent basis for combat doctrine. Ettrich mentioned that to have a better
understanding of how Jomini developed his principles of war creating a set of thoughts that have remained
relatively unaltered for approximately two centuries, it is necessary to study his life, his intense studies of war,
military career, and the circumstances that shaped his tactical and strategic thinking. Jomini as the same way
of other military philosophers, tried to articulate his insights about of the art of war presenting his ideas
through a list of maxims or as a list of general truths whose application contributes to success in war, they may
be legitimately viewed, as the prototype of the modern principles of war . Jomini s maxims are the closest
thought to the modern principles of war. Without considering the fact that Jomini never defined his concepts
like general principles of war, nor did he provided precise details of the fundamental principles he wrote, these
have been adopted for many armies in the world. In chapter six of Peter Paret s Makers of Modern Strategy:
From Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age, John Shy mentioned that many of the nineteenth centuries military
leaders accepted Jomini s maxims as valid principles. Ettrich recalls that historically, the Jomini s concepts of
principles of war were introduced to the United States in 1817 and were used initially at the US Military
Academy; these principles are still valid in the US Army doctrine. Weigley argues that during the United
States Civil War, military leaders from both sides embraced concepts and principles learned while studying as
contemporaries at the Military Academy prior to the rise and secession of the Confederacy ; as a result, Union
and Confederates leaders achieved

Butcher Boy was in Clones Co.Monaghan. Jordan decided to have the characters also speak in a Monaghan
accent which mirrored McCabe s. As this was a film to be set in the accents of Monaghan all the actors who
were not native speakers went to considerable trouble to master this tongue .# Not only was Jordan bringing
this mainstream film production to Ireland but to Monaghan. This was a boost for any town or city to get the
chance to be in a blockbuster and For McCabe, it was a remarkable experience to return to his home town with
a motion picture crew in tow # The setting of the film was a very important aspect of the movie in my opinion
because if Jordan failed to pick a place as ideal as McCabe s hometown then it might have been too outside the
domain of the novel and may not have worked as perfect as it did. The fact that Jordan went with Monaghan as
the location of the film shows just how close he wanted to get to the novel and to the writer. It would have
been just as easy to keep all the filming in Dublin or Galway and without the

How Many Patriots Were Loyalists
Loyalists vs. Patriots Believe it or not there were some colonists during the American Revolution that
supported British rule. Loyalists are what they were called. They remained loyal to England and King George.
However, there were also two other groups along with the loyalists which include the patriots and the people
who were neutral. The few colonists that remained loyal to Great Britain, during the American Revolution,
were wrong in doing so, even though Britain had a nice, stable government. If you were a loyalist you were
hated by the patriots. The patriots were people who wanted to gain independence from Britain. U.S.history.org
states, Patriots subjected loyalists to public humiliation and violence. Many loyalists found their property
vandalized, looted, and burned. This shows that the colonists who were loyalists had a tough life during the
American Revolution. So, it wasn t a smart choice to become a loyalist during that time period. ... Show more

One of the things they did was tax the colonists on things they didn t get to vote on in parliament. NC Pedia
states, Parliament did not have the right to take their money by imposing taxes. No taxation without
representation became their rallying cry. This means that colonists didn t want to get taxed for something they
didn t have a say in. They know that taxes are needed to help run the country but, they didn t get to help decide
what should be taxed. Great Britain also made some unfair laws. For example, they decided to make it legal
that a British soldier come and sleep in your home and you would have to feed them. So, as you can tell, the
British did some pretty unfair and cruel things so, who would want to be a part of

Eric Schlosser s Fast Food Nation Exposes the High Cost of...
Many feel that the fast food industry is providing a valuable service by catering to consumer needs; that it is
inexpensive and easily accessible. For people who don t have time to prepare meals, for households in which
both parents work, there s no question it provides a service. But what is the true cost of this convenience? In
the book, Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser reveals that the cost is the lives of the people who work in the meat
processing plants. Meat packing is now the most dangerous job in the United States.
The men and women who work in the slaughterhouses are often low paid, poor immigrants, who have not
completely learned English and are practically illiterate. These workers make a knife cut every two or three ...

This manner that runs the lives of slaughterhouse workers is completely unethical. In any business, stopping
an employee from receiving due compensation for injuries is unfair and unethical. It seems like that in any
other business, if a worker is injured, and does not receive fair compensation, they have the ability and drive to
enforce the law; but in the case of the slaughterhouse workers, that are often illiterate, this rarely happens.
The fast food industry both feeds and prays off the young. Pioneers in developing marketing strategies to
target children, the fast food chains have even infiltrated the nation s schools through lunchroom franchises
and special advertising packages that answer public education s need for funds; in every way possible, giving
the children a loyal friend to rely on. In many franchises, teenagers are perfect candidates for low paying, low
skilled, short term jobs and constitute a large part of the fast food chains workforce; and often practically run
individual locations, having more responsibility than most adults.
The intense advertising and responsibilities is not the only thing we saw in Fast Food Nation that effected
children. The quality of the meat that is fed to children in school and at the fast food restaurants is in some
cases horrendous. Children are not the only age group that eats this tainted food, but they are more greatly

White Privilege Vs White Race
Inequality has two components in respect to power, privilege and social status: political imbalance at a social
level and prejudice on the individual level. Race superiority in regards to white privilege by its very nature is a
flawed premise! There is no white race; we are all a mixture of our ancestors DNA; by some estimates ninety
or more percent of us are technically mixed race. In my own family of origin we have identified our origins to
include, but not limited to: American Indian, Irish, Scottish, Brazilian, Welsh, German, Scandinavian and
Dutch. I was not raised with the idea or label that my skin was white , in fact I was taught that white was the

My parents prefer that I check other on legal documents as a statement against the social injustices brought
about by society due to the identifier of skin color (perhaps, there should be a box that reads, Heinz 57 ). The
values I have been taught at an individual level are a springboard to changing the world. From my perspective,
I am only left to either evaluate behaviors of the individual or a society. Perhaps, my perspective has caused
me to only see injustices brought about by individual and group behaviors, not skin color. What we might try,
is to stop fueling the ideology of white privilege. If future generations (me included) raise our children with an
attitude of equality based on behaviors conducive to a society it would become part of the consciousness of
our society. It s important to remember that privilege even white privilege is relative. What we re fueling by
focusing on the negative is the negative. What we need to focus on is how we as individuals can change the

The Causes Of The Migration Series By Jacob Lawrence
The Migration series by Jacob Lawrence is a sequence of sixty paintings (with captions) portraying the mass
movement of African Americans from the rural South to cities in the North and West during the beginning of
the twentieth century. The artist was the child of African American migrants, and he grew up during the 1930s
in Harlem, where he took art classes. In planning the series, Lawrence did a lot of library research on the
history and causes of the migration. Reading the series from beginning to end, the viewer can see that he puts
the fruits of his learning into the scenes and captions. This paper explores how the series represents the causes
of the Great Migration. I argue that Lawrence shows several economic factors, such as difficult ... Show more

Although the pattern does not stay exactly this way throughout the series, the back and forth between
depictions of individuals and groups is pretty common. My point is similar to this one in a scholarly article:
The narrative . . . is not linear, but alternates between the insistent portrayal of the dominant event in the plot
the actual physical displacement of the people and paintings dealing with the main causes of this mass
migration (Tribe 405). This quotation brings us back to the issue of causes, which I think is related to the
opposition individual/society. When Lawrence depicts the causes pushing African Americans out of the South
(like lynching, child labor, injustice, and discrimination), he usually shows us only one person or a small
group, like a family. Some of the causes pulling migrants away from the South (labor agents, letters from kin)
also are shown having their effect on individuals or small groups. But when

Taking a Look at Australian Courtrooms
Australian courtrooms are highly ritualised spaces where various long serving customs and traditions are
strictly followed in order to constitute events of power, and also featured in the relative power relations. As
was evident by the local courtrooms visited within The Downing Centre, the architecture, language, courtroom
actors and spatial organisation demonstrate the numerous levels of power, of which are present. This usage of
power is evident as visible through the relationships between the courtroom actors, particularly those between
the judge or magistrate, the witnesses and lastly, the lawyers. These relations significantly highlight the
disparity of power between these individuals. Simultaneously, the courtroom architecture of which is present
also signals and represents the different levels of power during court proceedings. In addition, the use of legal
jargon in one s favour is also a worthy indicator of attaining this much sought after power aforementioned.
Within a courtroom, power relations are revealed at their greatest extent, in the instances of the interaction
between the different courtroom actors. During the observation of a particular criminal case, it became clear to
myself that the chain of power in a courtroom features the judge or magistrate at the top, followed by the
lawyer (or defendant if they are representing themselves), with the witnesses and defendants at the bottom.
This form of power distribution further exemplifies the ritualistic

Edmund Spenser vs. Virgil and Ariosto Essay
Edmund Spenser vs Virgil and Ariosto Some scholars believe Spenser did not have sufficient education to
compose a work with as much complexity as The Faerie Queene, while others are still extolling him as one of
the most learned men of his time . Scholar Douglas Bush agrees, scholars now speak less certainly that they
once did of his familiarity with ancient literature . In contrast, Meritt Hughes finds no evidence that Spenser
derived any element of his poetry from any Greek Romance . Several questions still remain unanswered: Was
Edmund Spenser as divinely inspired to write The Faerie Queene as Virgil and Ariosto were in their works? Or
did Spenser simply lack creativity, causing him to steal his storylines from ... Show more content on

Another scholar testified that both Ariosto and Spenser did not observe Virgil s conception of an epic as a
unified account of a single hero s career, but instead got lost in their concentrations on wild, unnatural
allegories that greatly displeased and ultimately confused the reader (1).
Spenser, who was referred to as the English Virgil by his contemporaries, was certainly influenced by Virgil s
success (Kennedy 717). The idea of modeling one s career after Virgil s is know as the rota Virgilli or cursus
Virgilli, meaning the Virgilian wheel or course (717). It is explained in a four line preface added to
Renaissance editions of the Aeneid: Ille ego, qui quondam gracili modulates avena/ Carmen, et egressus silvis
vicina coegi/ ut quamvis avido parerent arva colono,/ gratum opus agricolis, at nunc horrentia Martis (I am he
who, after singing on the shepherd s slender pipe and leaving the wood side for the farmlands ever so much to
obey their eager tenant; my work was welcome to the farmers, but now I turn to the sterner stuff on Mars)
(717).
Virgil starts off writing the pastoral poem and ends with the epic. He begins his career with shepherd s slender
pipe (the pastoral Eclogues), proceeds to the farmlands (the didactic Georgics), and finally arrives at the
sterner stuff on Mars (the epic Aeneid) (717). Spenser described his own career similarly in the first book of

Essay on Candide
CANDIDE
By
Voltaire
Throughout Candide the author, Voltaire, demonstrates the character s experiences in a cruel world and his
fight to gain happiness. In the beginning Candide expects to achieve happiness without working for his goal
and only taking the easy way out of all situations. However, by the end of the book the character realized that
to achieve happiness a lot of work, compromises, and sacrifices are necessary.
Candide is a person of privilege who began life in the Castle of Westphalia. While a part of the castle life,
Candide was taught by Dr. Pangloss. Pangloss is a philosopher who teaches there is a cause for all things and
that everything is all for the good, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he does meet Cunegonde life does not become any easier or richer. At this reunion, Candide does begin
to take his life s matters into his own hands. His first attempt at this accomplishment is shown when he kills
Cunegonde s rapists. Though life does not become any easier, at this point Candide begins to grow from a
naïve young person into a grown realist. Cunegonde suddenly leaves Candide for a wealthy man. The man s
wealth, however, proves not to bring happiness to either Cunegonde or Candide.
Candide realizes he must take responsibility for his life. He must accept situations and try to change obstacles
that may be hindrances. Candide learns that labor will eliminate the three curses of mankind: want, boredom,
and vice. Candide realizes he must build his own life, however simple it may be. When meeting a man that is
happy with a simple garden to tend and a family to love, Candide realizes life does not have to be full of
wealth in order to be happy. He realizes that everything in life is not evil, especially when a person strives to
make changes and not simply accept what comes their way. A reader of Candide should realize how accepting
a situation and not trying to charge or overcome its obstacles is only harmful. If a person does not attempt to
change a bad situation, then that person should be complain about the outcome. A person should take
responsibility and

Love Canal Population Health Issues
Population Health Effects: What has been the resulting effect on the health of the population exposed at Love
Canal?
Cytogentic findings:
One of the most prominent concerns regarding the industrial waste from the Love Canal was the risk of
genetic damage. A study was published in 1984 looked at the cytogenetic finds in individuals living near the
Love Canal (Heath et al., 1984). Two groups of Love Canal residents were studied, as well as individual age
and sex matched controls from another population in the Niagara Falls area that was thought to be unexposed

specifically living in the swale areas during the period of active industrial dumping (Vianna Polan, 1984) and

et al., 2011). Additionally, there appears to be an elevated risk of preterm birth among children born in the
Love Canal compared to the NYS standard population (Austin et al., 2011). However, overall, the resulting
outcomes of exposure show some elevated SIR compared to control populations but because of the limited

business through existing or new products or in existing or new markets. By using this Matrix,he was helping
managers to assess the differing degrees of risk associated with moving their organisation forward.

existing. They also focus on whether a market is new or existing. Within each strategy there is a differing level
of risk. The four strategies are such as:

achieved by selling more products/services to established customers or by finding new customers within
existing markets.
2. Product development This involves developing new products for existing markets. Product development

  • 2. Paul Laurence Dunbar s Work By: Paul Laurence Dunbar Paul Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio, on June 27, 1872. Both of his parents, Joshua and Matilda Dunbar, were slaves. Shortly after Paul was born his parents separated. Paul was driven by his parent s life story to write poetry. In school Paul would edit the newspaper for the school along with being a member of the literary and debate societies. As Paul grew older he began writing and was a very intelligent student in school, he and his family did not have much money; therefore he had to put his college career on hold. Paul took a job as an elevator operator, which gave him opportunities to write. He was invited to read his poems at a meeting one evening and from that night he was repeatedly asked to events to read. In 1893, at age 21, Paul self published a series called Oak and Ivy. To cover the cost of the publication, Dunbar sold copies to the people who rode the elevator for one dollar. Dunbar moved to Chicago later that year. By 1895, Dunbar had poems published in popular newspapers and magazines. Frederick Douglass, a fan of Dunbar s work, called him the most promising colored man in America (Project MUSE). While in Chicago, Dunbar had written many poems and stories. He wrote eleven poems, four short stories, five novels, and a play before his death at thirty three. He had several unpublished short stories and poems that brought him a lot of attention at his readings. A few years later, Dunbar went on a 6 month tour of England to read his ... • 3. Labor Relation In The Workplace Introduction The age of technology has changed communication in both our personal and professional lives with the advent of social media. Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and others have global connections to the external world. The readiness of I pads, laptops and smart phones has provided both the individual and organizations alike to have instantaneous engagement to a broad and large audience over one or all of the social media networks. The relationship between the employee and the organization can be tested if company social media policies are to broad or restrict the employee s rights under the labor laws protected by the National Labor Relation Act (NLRA) under Section 7 and Section 8. As the company representative I would recommend that the company should voluntarily settle with the union to address the matter, due to the ambiguous or broad SMP that infringe or interfere with Souza s rights under Section 7 and Section 8 of the National Labor Relation Act. • 4. Analysis Of Detroit Industry Murals By Diego Rivera I choose to write about the Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera. Rivera was a prominent Mexican painter who was commissioned to paint murals based on Detroit s history and development of industry. The work is from the early modern age (1933). The murals depict the interior of the Ford automotive plant on the river Rough. I found it interesting that although the paintings represent a flourishing town and industry; in reality when Rivera first began to work on them, Detroit was still struggling to reclaim its pre depression glory. Even though many workers had lost their jobs at Ford, Rivera immortalized them and their contributions in his creations. Whether or not they were appropriate at the time is subjective. • 5. Horton Vs. California Case Essay DuPont1 Dylan DuPont 10/22/16 CJA 356 criminal evidence Week 4 final paper Horton vs. California On June 4th, 1990, Terry Brice Horton vs. California was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held 7 2 that the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit warrantless seizure of evidence, which is granted due to the plain view doctrine. The discovery of the evidence does not have to be inadvertent, although that is a characteristic of most legitimate plain view seizures. The victim was Erwin Wallaker he was robbed of jewelry and cash, in his own garage by two men, one armed with a machine gun and one with a stun gun. Wallaker heard enough of the robber s conversation to identify Horton s voice. His identification was partially corroborated by a witness who saw the robbers leaving the scene and by evidence that Horton had attended a coin show. Sergeant LaRault determined there was enough evidence to search Horton s home, and obtained a warrant to do so. His affidavit for the search warrant described both the weapons and the proceeds of the robbery, but the warrant only granted permission to look for the stolen property. While searching Horton s house, Sergeant LaRault did not find the property, but he did find an Uzi machine gun, a .38 caliber revolver, two stun guns, and a handcuff key, along with other items linking Horton to the crime. The evidence was admitted into the trial, and Horton was found guilty of armed robbery. Horton Argued that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Anatomy And Physiology Of The Respiratory Syncytial Virus Bailey Kundinger Anatomy and Physiology II Friday February 17, 2017 Respiratory Syncytial Virus A mother brings their toddler in to the clinic, with what they think is a cold but a nurse wonders if the child could possibly have respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). A cold and RSV are a lot alike, in the way that they both may come across as cold like symptoms, but this is not the case. Throughout this report one will find out what the differences between a common cold and RSV are, the signs and symptoms a toddler may have with this virus, the treatments one may face and ways to prevent this awful and dangerous virus. RSV will usually affect one s upper respiratory tract first before affecting the lower. It is also more common that this virus will affect someone s upper respiratory rather than the lower respiratory. Someone with an upper respiratory infection may come across as having the common cold, tonsillitis, the flu, and etc. The flu is also able to occur in someone who has a lower respiratory tract infection, as well as, bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and tuberculosis ( Respiratory Tract Infections, 2014). RSV is a virus that is hard to diagnosis because the signs and symptoms are a lot like the common cold. One may start to develop a runny nose or decrease in appetite the first couple of days when having this virus; but coughing, sneezing, and wheezing may also occur. In young infants, they may experience irritability or difficulties with breathing ( CDC, 2014). One may have this virus before realizing the symptoms like a dry cough, low grade fever, sore throat or headache (Mayo Clinic, 1998). Someone with an upper respiratory tract infection may have a fever, headache, sore throat or wheezing; whereas someone with a lower respiratory tract infection may have a cough, increased breathing rate, tightness in the chest. While both tract infections should be taken seriously, they both can lead to RSV. Bronchitis and Bronchiolitis are also two very serious infections that may lead to RSV. ... • 7. How Racial Profiling Led to the Death of Trayvon Martin Racial Profiling As I walk to the store to pick up snacks for the next half of the super bowl, I am trying to make it quick. I finally arrive at the store and quickly get my two favorite items, skittles and an ice tea. Thinking to myself that this is all I need, not knowing that it would be my last meal. On the walk back home, I have a feeling that I am being followed. I speed up. I turn around to find that a grown Hispanic man, mid age, and heavily built is in fact, following me. In my head, I just want to make it home safely. Every move I make, he makes the same moves. Finally I turn around, quite nervous, to see if there was a problem. A person may not be a threat to society, but just because a citizen or officer of the law felt like they were does that make it okay to take matters in their own hands? Law enforcement has a job to protect, if their racial profiling judgment is in fact wrong, they can lose trust and creditability. Through there may have been cases were racial profiling has worked, due to luck; the cases in which they have been wrong have ended in devastating ways. Racial profiling continues to be a prevalent and egregious form of discrimination in the United States. Racial profiling is discrimination, and discrimination is wrong. Discrimination taints the entire criminal justice system. Racial profiling is nothing but public stereotyping. Therese extreme tactics make the justice system look bad in cases which their racial profiling was incorrect. It publicly puts all races in once category, bad or good. Discrimination has being going on for years and years in history. African Americans are one group of people who have worked so hard not to be discriminated against, and with racial profiling they are constantly being brought back down to the Jim Crow Era. • 8. Hiv And Treatment Adherence By Bobbi Marie Pollard HIV and Treatment Adherence Bobbi Marie Pollard Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a chronic illness, however, for those with access to health care and treatment, it is a very manageable condition. Although it is no longer considered a death sentence in developed countries, it is still a highly stigmatized illness. The public may no longer perceive HIV as the plague it once was, yet there has been no decline in the number of new infections per year in the past decade in the United States (Catalan et al., 2000). Today, people are living longer with HIV due to the development of combination antiretroviral drug therapies (ART). ART has provided significant progress in treatment (Linsk et al., 2002). Treatment accessibility and medication adherence are crucial in order to continue manage the disease on both the individual and public level. Overview of HIV/AIDS HIV and AIDS are sometimes used interchangeably, although there is a significant difference, and some HIV positive individuals will never develop Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Testing HIV positive means there are antibodies present in the system. HIV is classified into two phases: symptomatic and asymptomatic. Individuals show signs of a compromised immune system during the symptomatic phase, although with treatment advances, many are living asymptomatically. The progress of the illness can often be evaluated by looking at one s CD4 and viral load ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Aldous Huxley s Impact On American Society Most Americans place the rise of psychedelic and hallucinogenic drug use in the 1970 s, but Aldous Huxley, author and English scholar, was ahead of his time. Starting in the 1940 s, Huxley began using a hallucinogenic drug under the watch of a psychiatrist conducting a clinical study as he wrote novels. One of his best known novels, written while he was using psychedelics such as mescaline and LSD, is Island, a story set on the imaginary island of Pala in Southeast Asia. Pala appears to be a utopian society, untouched by the Western influences of capitalism and widespread industrial areas with high consumerism. His own experimentation and use of hallucinogenic drugs changed his perception of the world, which bled into his writing. The psychiatrist Humphrey Osmond accepted Huxley as a test subject for mescaline, a hallucinogenic similar to LSD, in the mid 1940 s. These drug induced experiences were, for Huxley, of mystical import and supported beliefs in the wisdom of Eastern teachings (Aliprandi, Aldous Huxley: Early Life and Works ). Unlike the drug he invented in his earlier book A Brave New World, which was called soma and acted as a depressant to relax the mind, the mescaline and psychedelic drugs introduced in Island could expand the human mind, rather than pacify it. Huxley used LSD and other hallucinogenic drugs often, enjoying their mind opening abilities and which allowed him to contemplate which reality was true, the sober reality or his drug induced journey through his own mind. It proposes ten stages which would help diminish school disappointment and dropout rates, make society more pleasant and help stay away from the huge social expenses of minimized grown ups with couple of essential aptitude. Value in instruction has two measurements. The principal is reasonableness, which essentially means verifying that individual and social circumstances for instance sexual orientation, financial status or ethnic beginning ought not be an obstruction to accomplishing instructive potential. The second is incorporation, as such guaranteeing an essential least standard of instruction for all for instance that everybody ought to have the capacity to peruse, compose and do basic math. The two measurements are nearly entwined: handling school disappointment serves to defeat the impacts of social hardship which regularly causes school disappointment. Why do we act the way we do? Does the mass media really affect the way a people in a society behave? A society is defined as a large social group that shares the same geographical territory and is governed by the same political authority and cultural expectations. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Functionalism was introduced by Emile Durkheim (1858 1917), who is considered by many intellectual thinkers to be the founder of modern sociology. The main principle of functionalism is that each part of a society is interdependent and contributes towards making society work as a whole. Each of these parts has to be working correctly but if something does go wrong then society has mechanisms to deal with them, such as the police and the legal system. Functionalists also believe that every social institution has many important functions to perform (Burton, 2013, online). Durkheim introduced the theory anomie , or lack of social norms , that could cause instability or chaos. This concept bought to light many instances that could affect a society in a negative way and especially the behaviour of individuals towards one another (Emile Durkheim org, 2013, online). Another concept put forward by Durkheim the sum of all of its parts is larger than the whole , defined at the introduction of the structural/functionalist theory, is as relevant today as it was when first introduced (Gamble, 2008, Online). Robert K. Merton (1910 2003) is one example of how Durkheim s theories have lasted through the ages because his theory of anomie was taken directly from Durkheim s perspective and still remains a major theory in the structure of society, both in criminal justice and sociology (cited in ... These relationships effect the economies, security, and continuous development of the global populace. In a world of many states, international collaboration can be beneficial to all parties involved. This collaboration allows the various sovereign states to promote peace, negotiate differences, and apply military power when peaceful resolutions cannot be reached. While the United States works globally through its own USAID offices, they also make foreign decisions with the United Nations, NATO, and through various alliances. The efforts pursued through these organizations assist in the composition of the Foreign Policy for the United States. The United States Agency for International Development was created by President John Kennedy in 1961 via executive order (USAID, 2015). The website declares that the organization works to end extreme poverty and to promote resilient, democratic societies while advancing our security and prosperity by partnering with lands that need assistance. Although, the way I introduced myself to my client was not entirely incoherent, watching the video back, I was able to notice trembling in my voice, and I was almost nervous laughing. We had already agreed on the positioning of the chairs before filming, however the room the session was taking place in wasn t big enough, and we therefore found ourselves a little cramped. Nevertheless, the room size didn t become too much of a problem, as I was still able to position myself accordingly, allowing myself to face my client squarely enough. My posture remains open throughout the session, although I have noticed I didn t lean in towards the client at any point. I remember during the session I did keep thinking, should I lean in soon? , but I could never find a moment where I d be able to lean in naturally, and without having to force myself to do so. I certainly think for this specific aspect of counselling, I was focusing too much on making sure I was giving a counselling session properly, instead of forgetting about the camera and letting myself flow into it naturally. In order to test the passive sufficiency of a bi articular structure, such as a muscle, both joints which that structure crosses must first be identified. Additionally, the movements of those two joints which will constrain that structure must be identified. Next, one joint must be selected, and placed into the position that may constrain the structure. At the same time, the other joint must be placed in the position which will not put further strain on that structure. The selected joint must then be measured for its range of motion. Next, the same must be done with the selected joint, but in contrast, the other joint must be placed in the position which WILL further constrain the bi articular structure. Once that has been done, the selected joint s range of motion must be measured once more. If the range of motion of the selected joint is equal when the other joint is in both positions, the bi articular structure is passively sufficient. If the range of motion of the selected joint is smaller in the selected joint when the other joint is in a position that will put further strain on the bi articular structure, that structure is not passively sufficient. b. There are various differences between micro, mezzo and macro levels of practice. The micro level consists of a one on one session with the social worker to strengthen the client s coping skills and self esteem. The micro is based on an individual level referring to the day to day setting inhabited by the person and people they live with. It focuses on the individual or family. Examples include finding housing for the individual, healthcare or substance abuse help. It expands as the person grows. An example would be drawing a diagram with the individual or family being the focus and everything outside of that circle would be affecting the family or individual in several ways. The focus is on the micro level because it pertains to either the individual or the family. The mezzo level is about the individual s surrounding environment. It pertains to neighborhoods, schools and other entities. It is about providing services for the neighborhood or community. For example, the focus may be on making schools aware of certain mental health services and helping them obtain them. The macro level is the organization, assumptions, myths, and ideologies of the larger world. The universe hosting the smaller systems. (Garland,97) Job had an attitude that s similar to our when we don t understand what God is doing in our lives. In this passage, Job taught us to listen to the Lord despite our hurt or our belief that something is possible. This means that we have to trust in the Lord that his will for our lives will be done. Because we have to trust Gods authority over our lives, we also have to trust God s love for our lives. In the book, How to read Job, the authors write, One of the ways we trust God s wisdom is by refraining from inquiring why God did such a thing to us, or why he allowed it to happen. Feminist Perspective On Human Trafficking Through International Relations theory lenses, especially the Feminist lens, the issue of human trafficking is easily identified as an international crisis. Not only is this a human rights and security issue, but a gendered one at that. Approximately 80% of the exploitation that comes from human trafficking is in a sexual nature, and a majority of trafficking victims are female ( 11 Facts about Human Trafficking ). There is a clear stance from the feminist theory perspective that it is the states responsibility, and even duty, to protect vulnerable females from subjugation and mistreatment that comes from the global human trafficking system. Economic, cultural, and social factors influence the condition in which women are susceptible to being trafficked. A destabilized region, whether it be political, civil, or military unrest, results in the increase of human trafficking. These dangers within the state lead to displacements in population, as many attempt to migrate out of the region into safer territories ( Addressing the Root Causes ). BBC News reports of similar instances in Albania, a country in which trafficking took hold in the years after the collapse of communism in 1990 ( Human trafficking: Poor women and girls targeted in Albania 2017). Therefore, the Western monastic life provided the alternative: Instead of the pursuit of sex, the monks vowed celibacy; instead of the pursuit of power, he vowed obedience; instead of seeking possessions, he vowed poverty . In other words, the community both increases the pressure on the monks to understand their own souls, and decreases the chances of temptation of sin that may be provoked by the society. In addition, the complete Isolation of the community from the society also provides support and encouragement for the distinctive religious practice. Benedict required a life of obedience for monks that live within Western community, stability of residence and moral straggle. The abbot was to be chosen by the monks; once chosen, he had full authority over all decisions relating to the monastery and the individuals within it . In other words, the obedience, humility and patience were supreme virtues of the monks. According to Benedict, the main duty of monks a social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Essay on Divine Intellect in Dante s Inferno Divine Intellect in Dante s Inferno In Canto XI of Dante s Inferno, Virgil carefully explains the layout of hell to his student, Dante. Toward the end of his speech, Virgil says that Sodom and Cahors are speak[ing] in passionate contempt of God, (XI, 50 51), and divine will thus relegates them to the seventh circle. The sin of the Sodomites is clear for Dante, who poses no question on the matter, sodomy perhaps being an obvious affront to God which the bible directly addresses. However, the sin of Cahors, namely usury, is not clear to Dante. He asks Virgil to unravel the knot in his mind, since there is no obvious reason why a usurer a money lender essentially deserves any punishment at all for a crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, Dante is on Virgil s level in one sense, and far below him in another, which is true in the grand scheme of the work: Dante is only beginning to understand the workings of the divine order by Canto XI, while Virgil borders on omniscience throughout. Furthermore, Dante has not yet eclipsed Virgil as a poet, since at this point the Inferno is hardly begun, while the Aeneid presents Virgil s view of Hades from top to bottom.. In Dante s hell specifically, the reason that usury is a deadly sin is very confusing, which is why Dante calls it a knot. Unlike other sins, usury is not on its face a dreadful immorality. Virgil approaches the issue at first philosophically, making the profoundly esoteric claim that nature follows... the Divine Intellect and the Divine Art. The idea nature is therefore composed of these two abstract elements. The Intellect, coming first, must be at the root of the Art, since intellect must precede production, as in the Platonic doctrine of the essence of a thing preceding the existence of a thing. The Intellect is the potential; the art is the result. In concrete terms, the Intellect must therefore be the primordial stuff from which everything is made, and the Art therefore must be the process of making it into something tangible or usable. From this, then, we can deduce ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Antoine Henri Jomini The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were turbulent eras generating several changes in the way how commanders led the war. The world owes a debt to one man for interpreting and recording his contributions to strategy and the art of war: Antoine Henri Jomini. The purpose of this paper to explain why the Jomini s theories are a school of thoughts that remain adequate for explaining warfare in the modern era. The importance of logistics, the acceptance of principles of war, and the concept of the geometry of battlespace proposed by Jomini s theories are three broad concepts that are still adequate for explaining in the modern era. Mallick argues that The Principles of War are the principles expressing the rules of military thought and actions that serve as the permanent basis for combat doctrine. Ettrich mentioned that to have a better understanding of how Jomini developed his principles of war creating a set of thoughts that have remained relatively unaltered for approximately two centuries, it is necessary to study his life, his intense studies of war, military career, and the circumstances that shaped his tactical and strategic thinking. Jomini as the same way of other military philosophers, tried to articulate his insights about of the art of war presenting his ideas through a list of maxims or as a list of general truths whose application contributes to success in war, they may be legitimately viewed, as the prototype of the modern principles of war . Jomini s maxims are the closest thought to the modern principles of war. Without considering the fact that Jomini never defined his concepts like general principles of war, nor did he provided precise details of the fundamental principles he wrote, these have been adopted for many armies in the world. In chapter six of Peter Paret s Makers of Modern Strategy: From Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age, John Shy mentioned that many of the nineteenth centuries military leaders accepted Jomini s maxims as valid principles. Ettrich recalls that historically, the Jomini s concepts of principles of war were introduced to the United States in 1817 and were used initially at the US Military Academy; these principles are still valid in the US Army doctrine. Weigley argues that during the United States Civil War, military leaders from both sides embraced concepts and principles learned while studying as contemporaries at the Military Academy prior to the rise and secession of the Confederacy ; as a result, Union and Confederates leaders achieved ... Review of the Film Adaptation of The Butcher Boy Essay Review of the Film Adaptation of The Butcher Boy The butcher boy was made into a film adaptation in 1997 by Neill Jordan and author of the original book Patrick McCabe. The Novel was highly praised and controversial. Many saw it as the best account of Irish childhood. Its time frame is reminiscent of the early 1960 s. It is about a young boy called Francie Brady who becomes isolated from reality and eventually commit s the ultimate sin of murder from this isolation he is experiencing. The setting of The Butcher Boy was in Clones Co.Monaghan. Jordan decided to have the characters also speak in a Monaghan accent which mirrored McCabe s. As this was a film to be set in the accents of Monaghan all the actors who were not native speakers went to considerable trouble to master this tongue .# Not only was Jordan bringing this mainstream film production to Ireland but to Monaghan. This was a boost for any town or city to get the chance to be in a blockbuster and For McCabe, it was a remarkable experience to return to his home town with a motion picture crew in tow # The setting of the film was a very important aspect of the movie in my opinion because if Jordan failed to pick a place as ideal as McCabe s hometown then it might have been too outside the domain of the novel and may not have worked as perfect as it did. The few colonists that remained loyal to Great Britain, during the American Revolution, were wrong in doing so, even though Britain had a nice, stable government. If you were a loyalist you were hated by the patriots. The patriots were people who wanted to gain independence from Britain. In the book, Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser reveals that the cost is the lives of the people who work in the meat processing plants. Meat packing is now the most dangerous job in the United States. This quotation brings us back to the issue of causes, which I think is related to the opposition individual/society. When Lawrence depicts the causes pushing African Americans out of the South (like lynching, child labor, injustice, and discrimination), he usually shows us only one person or a small group, like a family. • 46. Taking a Look at Australian Courtrooms Australian courtrooms are highly ritualised spaces where various long serving customs and traditions are strictly followed in order to constitute events of power, and also featured in the relative power relations. As was evident by the local courtrooms visited within The Downing Centre, the architecture, language, courtroom actors and spatial organisation demonstrate the numerous levels of power, of which are present. This usage of power is evident as visible through the relationships between the courtroom actors, particularly those between the judge or magistrate, the witnesses and lastly, the lawyers. These relations significantly highlight the disparity of power between these individuals. Simultaneously, the courtroom architecture of which is present also signals and represents the different levels of power during court proceedings. In addition, the use of legal jargon in one s favour is also a worthy indicator of attaining this much sought after power aforementioned. Within a courtroom, power relations are revealed at their greatest extent, in the instances of the interaction between the different courtroom actors. During the observation of a particular criminal case, it became clear to myself that the chain of power in a courtroom features the judge or magistrate at the top, followed by the lawyer (or defendant if they are representing themselves), with the witnesses and defendants at the bottom. Edmund Spenser vs. Virgil and Ariosto Essay Edmund Spenser vs Virgil and Ariosto Some scholars believe Spenser did not have sufficient education to compose a work with as much complexity as The Faerie Queene, while others are still extolling him as one of the most learned men of his time . Scholar Douglas Bush agrees, scholars now speak less certainly that they once did of his familiarity with ancient literature . In contrast, Meritt Hughes finds no evidence that Spenser derived any element of his poetry from any Greek Romance . Another scholar testified that both Ariosto and Spenser did not observe Virgil s conception of an epic as a unified account of a single hero s career, but instead got lost in their concentrations on wild, unnatural allegories that greatly displeased and ultimately confused the reader (1). Spenser, who was referred to as the English Virgil by his contemporaries, was certainly influenced by Virgil s success (Kennedy 717). The idea of modeling one s career after Virgil s is know as the rota Virgilli or cursus Virgilli, meaning the Virgilian wheel or course (717). It is explained in a four line preface added to Renaissance editions of the Aeneid: Ille ego, qui quondam gracili modulates avena/ Carmen, et egressus silvis vicina coegi/ ut quamvis avido parerent arva colono,/ gratum opus agricolis, at nunc horrentia Martis (I am he who, after singing on the shepherd s slender pipe and leaving the wood side for the farmlands ever so much to obey their eager tenant; my work was welcome to the farmers, but now I turn to the sterner stuff on Mars) (717). Virgil starts off writing the pastoral poem and ends with the epic. He begins his career with shepherd s slender pipe (the pastoral Eclogues), proceeds to the farmlands (the didactic Georgics), and finally arrives at the sterner stuff on Mars (the epic Aeneid) (717).
