The central theme of this story is that things aren t always as they appear and this theme is developed
using characterization and the motif of sight. The first character to begin hiding their emotions using
an object was Mr. Das, who used a camera to hide the fact that he wants his family to seem happy. For
instance, near the end of the story, when the family stops near a cave to take a picture, Mr. and Mrs.
Das argue when Mrs. Das doesn t want to get out of the van with the family. Mr. Das says But we
could use one of these pictures for our Christmas card this year. We didn t get one of all five of us at
the Sun Temple. Mr. Kapasi could take it. (Lahiri, pg 24) In this piece of evidence, Mr. Das wants to
take a picture as a family so it can be used as a Christmas card. This family picture was supposed to
cover the fact that Mrs. Das was complaining about being in, to make them all seem happy, despite the

may seem happy, however, nothing is always as it seems. In addition, closer to the end of the story,
when Mrs. Das decides to be in the picture near the cave, Mrs. Das s child, Bobby goes missing.

Approximately four weeks ago, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history occurred not to far from
UCF. Patrons of Pulse nightclub, a gay nightclub in Orlando where massacred by Omar Mateen,
Mateen took the lives of forty nine individuals all because of their presence in a gay establishment.
This tragic incident wasn t the first attack on the LGBT community, but it s massive fatalities put
Congress under even more pressure to reform gun laws, gay rights, and suspected terrorist legislation.
As a political Science major, I take a special interest in the reactions among legislators after the
Orlando incident and believe there should be more equal protection for gay people under the law. The

bovine fibrinogen. In brief, bovine fibrinogen (2mg/ml) was dissolved in 50mM TrisHCl buffer, pH
7.4, 0.15M NaCl for overnight. Various amounts of crude venom from 1 10µg in 150 µl of buffer (Tris
Cl buffer, pH 7.4, 0.15M NaCl) were incubated with 300µl of dissolved fibrinogen for different time
intervals (0, 30, 60, 120, 240, 480, 960 and 1440mins) at 37°C 240. The collected mixtures at various
time intervals were then run on a 12.5% SDS PAGE to observe any changes in the protein bands of
fibrinogen. Staining was done with 1.2% coommassie brilliant blue R250 and destained with
Methanol: Acetic acid: Water (40:10:50) to observe any effect on the Aα, Bβ and γ chains of bovine

Exhibition Review Dale Chihuly, the Halcyon Gallery
Dale Chihuly is an American artist, born September 20th, 1941 who is known for his glass sculptures.
One of his most well known pieces is the blue and green glass sculpture hanging in the front entrance
of the Victoria Albert Museum in London (figure 1). His work has included over 200 museum
collections worldwide, and I visited his exhibition in the Halcyon Gallery on New Bond Street in
London on the 23rd of January 2012.
The entire exhibition was made up of glass sculptures fitting into several different genres created by
the artist; for example Seaforms , Persians , both created in the 1980 s, and Fiori , which he created in

As the pieces were 3D, standing out from the wall, interesting coloured shadows and highlights were
created with the lighting on the white walls. The viewers could walk beneath the pieces to view the
underneath of each bowl like disc, and see the detail of different coloured glass swirled into the piece.
The curving edges of the discs created a natural feel to the piece, softening it.
Another part of the exhibition that I found visually stimulating were the Basket themed pieces, created
in the 1970 s, as I thought their smooth edges and insides captured and reflected the lights really
effectively (figures 8 and 9). I also really liked the multiple baskets stacked inside one another,
showing how Chihuly can handcraft the basket shapes on a variety of scales. The lip wrap on each
basket is often a contrasting colour, developed from the tradition of Venetian glassmaking, and is a
trademark of Chihuly s work. I feel the bold colour lip wraps help to draw the viewer s eye into the
centre of the baskets, revealing the smaller baskets within.
I really liked the contrast in the colour of the two chandelier pieces in the windows of the Halcyon
Gallery (figures 10 and 11). The deep red and blues within the Cranberry and Clear Chandelier and the
Dusky Sky Chandelier draw the attention of passers by, encouraging you to step closer and view the
intricacies of each handcrafted piece of the two chandeliers. I feel they were the ideal pieces of work

The Causes Of Firebrand Storms
Firebrand storms are understood as the only mechanism that can initiate a spot fire at long distances
from the fire front. The surface area of the firebrands play an important role in speeding of fire via
firebrand. In this paper, the surface area of 1400 firebrands was measured via image processing
techniques and then, the uncertainty of the measurement is calculated. It was found that the mean,
variance and skewness of the projected area are 3.90, 41.01 and 6.62 respectively. Moreover, the
standard and combined uncertainties in measuring the skewness are 0.17 and 0.25 cm2 respectively.
Large open fires threaten lives and properties worldwide. In the United States, only in 2016, over one
million fires were reported which has caused 3390 civilian death and 10.6 million dollars property loss
[1]. In open fires, three mechanisms have been renown for spreading of fire: (1) direct flame contact,
(2) radiant and convective heat flux, and (3) firebrands. A 2008 study found that the direct flame and
radiant/convective heat flux mechanism is relatively weak and ultimately incapable of initiating
another fire when the distance is more than 100 feet [2]. Therefore, the first two mechanisms are
conceivably less dangerous with distance. On the other hand, firebrands are capable of initiating spot
fires miles away from the fire line. These flying hot particles can be either burning combustible
materials (woods) or high temperature non combustible materials (metals) depending on their origin at
which they have been lofted. Given both the firebrands ignition capabilities at great distances as well
as the diversity of the firebrands origins [3], the natural problem culminates around the firebrands
potential for catastrophic destruction. The lethality of a firebrand depends on various parameters such
as mass, projected area and lying distance. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct experiments and
measure the above mentioned parameters. This papers addresses the measurement of the projected
area (the measurand) and the uncertainty in this measurement.

Sharon Olds author of the Language of the Brag, suggests through her experience in the poem that our
society and culture altogether is male dominated towards achievement and focused more for men s
success and heroism. Men are typically known for their strength and courage, especially heroic acts in
