Examples are foreign objects in the eye, burns, blunt injuries, infections, blood clots or glaucoma. Prompt treatment is needed to prevent vision loss or blindness. Examinations assess vision, eye movements and structures. Treatments depend on the emergency, and may include irrigation, antibiotics, pressure reduction, wound closure or referral to an ophthalmologist. Examples of specific emergencies discussed are corneal abrasions, hyphema, lid or globe injuries, chemical burns, glaucoma and infections.
