Analysis Of The From The Scarlet Letter

Composition: Analysis Chapter Nine, The Leech from the Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most iconic books in history; its storyline,
theme and literal characters have made an impact on the world of literature for hundreds of years.
What stands out the most in the book is the use of archaic diction and figurative language, which serve
to paint vivid, descriptive pictures of each character, specifically, Roger Chillingworth. In chapter nine
of The Scarlet Letter, The Leech , Nathaniel Hawthorne uses setting, allusion, metaphor, irony,
diction, and tone to reveal Roger Chillingworth, the town Leech s, evil, ominous character displayed
by his actions and words. Throughout chapter nine of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne places
Chillingworth in or near the cemetery by the widow s house, an ominous setting that foreshadows his
death. During the book as a whole, Chillingworth usually pops up in spooky settings, such as Hester s
jail cell, the woods, Dimmesdale s dark lit room, and the scaffold at night, these all playing into the
eerie nature of Chillingworth himself. Towards the beginning of this chapter, it is suggested that
Chillingworth had come to terms with the reality of his estranged wife, Hester, having a child by
another man, and was so distraught and embarrassed that he changed his identity with a vengeance.
Unknown to all but Hester Prynne... he chose to withdraw his name

The Colonization Of North America Essay
During the sixteenth century European pilgrims migrated across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North
America. North America had just been introduced to the Western Civilization. The America s were
home to the indigenous people, that were made up of several tribes that were called Indians by the
early settlers. Together the Indians and settlers began to thrive. Growth and development in the new
world was made possible by the abundant amount of natural resources. These early settlers had a
major influence on the joining of these two cultures. Settlers started to inhabit and populate along the
east coast and moving north and south. They began organising into colonies and called themselves
colonist. Colonist enjoyed freedoms and opportunities that they never had. Owning land was never
possible in the colonist previous civilization. Colonist were also free to decide how they wanted to
make a living unlike the peasant life that many of them had known before. One of the biggest reasons
the colonist were so enthusiastic because they got to worship how they wanted. They were finally able
to practice and believe in God to their best understanding. For centuries very few people have had this
right, to worship as they desire. One can see why the colonist lived with so much passion and pride in
this new life style. During the 1700s there began to be uneasiness and frustration amongst the colonist.
Much of the frustration grew because of the unfair dominion that

Skateboarding Is A Popular Activity Among Youth
Nowadays, skateboarding is a very popular activity among youth, and has become an art form to many
enthusiasts. Skateboarding is a hard sport to learn. It s not something that can be learned overnight.
Even the top pros like Paul Rodriguez and Eric Koston still learn new things even though they have
been doing it for years. With skateboarding, there are endless possibilities when it comes to tricks.
When it comes to beginners, learning the basics is the best way to start this great pastime.
First, you should know the anatomy of your skateboard. A skateboard consists of a deck, trucks,
wheels, and bearings. Grip tape is used to help your feet grip the board. Hardware is used to bolt your
trucks to the deck and nuts are used to fasten the wheels on. For information on skateboard products,
visit your local skateboard retailer.
When it comes to skateboarding the first and foremost thing you should learn is how ride. Most people
who have never ridden a skateboard get on the first time and wipe out. Skateboarding requires a great
deal balance. You must always maintain your center of gravity directly over your board. If you lean
too far back, chances are you will fall backwards and the board will shoot out from under you. If you
lean too far forward, chances are you will fall on your face. Maintaining your weight directly over
your board, is the most important thing to know. You should practice by placing your board on carpet
or grass and standing on it with your feet over the

Mozart Symphony No. 40
Kendall Kaatz Dr. Galit Kaunitz Music Appreciation 1590 08 Due date: 9/30/14 Mozart Symphony
No. 40 The piece that I decide to do was Mozart Symphony No. 40 because it seemed like it would
have the most instruments, different dynamics and a different sound to it. There were a lot of
instruments you could hear when you first listened to this piece. The first instruments that I heard right
away were the violins, flutes, and oboes. As I kept listening I noticed the clarinets, bassoons, cello,
viola, and the French horn. The instruments that seemed like they were the most important in this
piece were the violins, because they started the piece and through out the rest of the piece they were
always there being the main part of this piece. The melody in the first movement opens with the
violins and they are then accompany by the violas and the cello. As you keep listening you notice that
French horn, clarinets, flutes, and oboes contribute to the harmony. The first movement is also in the
key signature of G minor. As you move through the first movement you enter into the second section
which is in a different key. The key signature of the second movement is in B flat major. The
instruments that have the melody this time are the violins along with the clarinets and bassoons. The
mood through out the piece to me seemed to have a lightness and grace to it. During the piece I also
realized that you pick up on a dark undertone. The dark undertone is in the harmony of the

2000 Us Presidential Election Essay
Introduction
The US Presidential Election of 2000 featured George W. Bush and Al Gore. It will go down in
history as one of the most closest elections¡¦ in US history. It also goes down as one of the most
controversial. The final decision was based on just a few hundred votes in Florida. The controversy
began when the media prematurely declared the winner twice based solely on exit polls. They finally
conceded that the Florida count was just too close to predict. It would take a month before the election
was ultimately certified after numerous court challenges and vote recounts. Republican candidate
George W. Bush was declared the winner of the Florida¡¦s 25 electoral votes. This was a victory by a
razor thin margin of popular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As in the past, the media was covering the all important election. They had always relied on exit polls
as the polls closed across the nation. In reality, the Florida results were just too close to call.
Nevertheless, that did not stop the media from doing so. Not once, but twice, major news media
outlets were erroneous in their report. Around 8pm, it was declared that Al Gore was the projected
winner of the electoral votes in the state of Florida. However, a couple of hours later, the projection
was retracted and restated as Florida as being too close to call. Then, just after 2am on November 8,
the mistake was made for a second time. The major networks declared George W. as the winner. This
even led to Al Gore calling the Governor to concede. However, as Gore prepared to address his
supporters in Nashville, Tennessee, he was alert to the shrinking numbers in Bush¡¦s lead. The final
total was now less than one half of a percent lead in favor of Bush. That immediately calls for a
recount of votes under state law. Subsequently, Gore called Bush and retracted his concession. It
wasn¡¦t over yet! One thing was, Al Gore had prevailed in the popular vote but without Florida¡¦s tally,
the electoral vote was up in the air. The election wasn¡¦t over and the recounts began.

The results of the November 7, 2000 election were unknown for more than a month after the election.

James Franco Research Paper
A man once said If it doesn´t challenge you, it won´t change you. Now think about that for a moment
and ask yourself, can it be true? I am glad to dedicate my thoughts and experiences in this essay about
changes that include my favorite person, the one and only, James Franco who has inspired me to write
this longed for essay.
One of my biggest inspiration sources behind this essay was James Franco. He is known as an author,
actor and a director. In my eyes, he is likely the most decent person I know. Even though I have not
met him in person, it feels like I have known him for ages. I admire him: his compelling eyes, smile
and his extraordinary laugh. When I first heard of Franco, I was sitting behind a computer screen after

I wanted to change some important things in my life that included: my writing skills, reading
comprehension and talking slower when having an oral presentation. In order to do these changes, I
put up goals. To accomplish the first goal, which was the reading comprehension, I went to the library
and borrowed some classic English literature books: Pride and prejudice by Jane Austin, Huckleberry
Finn by Mark Twain and Moby Dick by Herman Melville.
Also, in today´s society, there are millions of people who want changes in their lives. The changes can
be: getting healthier, stop with drug addicts or become a better person. As the quotation goes easier
said than done is very common. I have met people who want s changes in their lives, but have not
taken into account for any reason. I would say that it is perhaps of the lack of inspiration and not
committing 100% of hard work to aim the goal. There is also a quote that I consider can be true about
addicts who aspire after a change This is what addicts do. The second they start making progress they
screw up, because deep down they think it s only a matter of time before they fail. They d rather fall

Essay about Violence, Corruption, and Wealth in American...
Today s society is no stranger to violence and corruption. We see it in our streets, on our television and
movie screens, and we hear it in music. However, a clearer connection is being made between this
corruption and wealth. Our culture is beginning to associate dishonesty and criminal acts with money
and material goods. Images of wealth and fame through murder and mayhem are pounded into

Many rappers including the late quot;Notorious B.I.G quot; and quot;2Pac quot;, two very well known
rappers, made innumerable references to the use and sale of drugs, along with the profit to be made, in
their lyrics. In the song quot;Sky s the Limit quot;, the Notorious B.I.G raps about his school days,
being a young drug dealer, rapping quot;Buy a dime [of marijuana], smoke five, sell the rest for 20/ a
young nigga making far too much money/ I was the only 8th grader with a mobile [phone]. quot;
Other rappers have based their entire careers on drugs like rapper quot;Redman quot; who is an open
and proud marijuana smoker and promoter. In an interview in quot;Source quot; Magazine, he stated
quot;I spend about 18 20,000 dollars last year on [marijuana] quot;. He makes many references to the
drug in just about every song he is featured in. While all this is going on, you can see these rappers
sporting the newest clothes, the shiniest diamonds and the fastest cars. Rappers, unlike other high paid
professionals, have a reputation for flaunting and bragging about their money. Music videos are the
perfect stage to do this and rappers take full advantage of the opportunity with $7,000,000 + videos
containing cars, special effects and in one video, a $200,000 platinum gold tank, believe it or not. The
clear message here is that power, wealth and stardom are accompanied by violence and corruption.

Answer: Animal pollinated plants are strong, which make them easier to be found during evidence

which makes it easier to be found in forensic science during evidence collection, but it s harder to
direct find a suspect with this type of pollen. Water dispersed pollen absolutely has to stay in water or
it will degenerate. So this type of pollen doesn t exactly help in forensic science unless a victim was
drowned.
17)Describe how pollen can be used to determine if a crime occurred in the city or in the country or
during the day or night.
Answer: Pollen can be used to determine if a crime occurred in the city or in the country or during the
day or night because country city conditions are different. The air is more polluted in the city than in
the country, which can affect plant cycles. Also, the city has a lot more sidewalks other pavements,
shaded areas and not very much fertile soil for plants to even grow. This majorly limits the types and
survival of plants in that environment. Plants mostly flower in the daytime opposed to the night time
because there is sun only in the daytime. This means that there is more pollen in the air during the

Essay on Explaining Aggression
Explaining Aggression One of the achievements of social psychology has been in extending
explanations of aggression and violence away from merely being reflections of the inner state of
individuals
There many ways of explaining aggressive behaviour in humans. Some theories view aggression as an
important part of our evolutionary heritage , others as an imbalance in hormones or neurotransmitters
in the brain. Early psychological theories of aggression explained aggressive behaviour as an
automatic consequence of personal frustration. Social learning theories see the cause of our aggressive
behaviour as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are however, some methodological problems in Bandura s study. Joseph said that the
experiment only involves harm to an inflatable doll not a human being, therefore it is not a good
example of aggression. Johnston found that children who behaved violently towards the doll were
rated as more violent generally by teachers. Aggression is often described as antisocial behaviour but
by observing adult aggressive behaviour being rewarded children may think this behaviour is
acceptable and normative. Therefore it shows that social learning theory explains that is more about
learning behaviour rather than being a reflection of an individual s inner state. It also explains the
findings which show that children who watch violent films are more likely to behave in an aggressive
way. Social learning theory can account for cultural and individual variation; it can also explain why
we behave aggressively in some situations and not others. When we are rewarded or reinforced for
behaving aggressively this is related to specific situations, in other situations we may find this
behaviour isn t rewarded. This is known as context dependent learning.
In spite of the success of social learning theory, there are reasons for arguing that Bandura s approach
is limited and that aggressive

Starbucks And Its Impact On The World Coffee Industry Essay
Millions of people all over the world will take time out of their day to walk into a Starbucks for a cup
of Joe . Coffee is the most popular leading beverage that is enjoyed throughout the world and in so
many different forms. You can get coffee just about anywhere, but there is a reason why people choose
Starbucks coffee. Starbucks is known for their friendly, positive environment with staff that is truly
accommodating and welcoming. People buy Starbucks for what it represents and the status image that
comes along with it. Starbucks has an excellent business structure due to its national and global
success. Starbucks stands strong in the world coffee industry and still is financially succeeding even in
hard economic times with coffee that may seem overpriced to many.
The coffee industry is continually growing regardless of the increase cost of coffee since January
2009. The price has been rising not because of the price of coffee itself, but because of the supply
chain and the current economic situation around the world. In 2012, Starbucks had to raise their prices
globally, but especially in the United States and China, due to rising prices of coffee and other
ingredients they use to make their signature drinks. Although prices were raised globally due to high
demand of the product and the cost of producing it, there is still a strong demand for Starbucks
because of their large consumer base. Starbucks main competitors are McDonald s and Dunkin
Donuts. Starbucks knows

Why Jackson May Recover Contract Damages
I PART A
Is Jackson able to recover by way of damages; the students profits made on Airbandb; and the loss for
the three months rent before 1 December?
To show that Jackson may recover contract damages, the following elements must be considered:
1. Breach
2. Loss
3. Causation
4. Remoteness
5. Assessment of damages
A Breach
To claim damages, Jackson must establish breached of contract. The contract prohibits the students
from sub letting the property without Jackson s express permission. Without his knowledge, they sub
let the house on Airbandb, thereby constituting breach.
B Loss
Jackson has lost the profit from three months rent before 1 December.
C Causation
Did students breach cause Jackson to lose rent profits for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Per Hadley v Baxendale remoteness is satisfied where the damage either:
(a) arose naturally according to the usual course of things, from the breach; or
(b) may reasonably be supposed to have been in the contemplation of both parties at the time they
made the contract, as a probable result of the breach.
Applying the first limb, the students were presumably aware that subletting was a serious possibility
in termination and loss of future rent payments (until a new tenant was found), thus rendering the loss
reasonably foreseeable . While the students may argue that the extent of the loss as a full three months
of lost rent renders the loss too remote, per H Parsons (Livestock) Ltd v Uttley Ingham, the
foreseeability of the extent of the harm is irrelevant where the type of harm was foreseeable (as
satisfied above). Thus, remoteness is likely satisfied.
E Assessment of damages
Can Jackson claim loss of bargain damages?
Loss of bargain damages are only recoverable where a contract can be terminated at common law:
Shevill v Builders Licensing Board ( Shevill ). At common law, the right to terminate may arise when
there is a breach of a condition a term so important the party would not have entered into the contract
without assurance of its strict performance: Luna Park (NSW) Ltd v Tramways Advertising Pty Ltd.
This clause is likely to be construed as a condition given the contract is a lease agreement.

The Current State Of Health Care System Essay
Introduction The current state of United States health care system is one of the most polarizing
subjects of debate among scholars and other health care professionals across the globe. This can be
attributed to the fact that at one extreme end, there are some who argue that that Americans have the
best system of health care in the world (MePhee, 2013). Perhaps the availability of the state of the art
facilities and free medical technology that have become highly symbolic of the various industries in
the United States have motivated the idea of the country s health care system being unparalleled to
others. However, there is a common belief that the fight for universal health care can only be
successful if its current state of health care is described as a failure in the modern era as emphasized
by MePhee (2013). As a matter of fact Wise and Yashiro, 2006 assert that there some individuals who
describe the America s system as being fragmented and inefficient, considering the staggering
statistics regarding how Americans spend more on health care compared to other countries in the
world. Additionally, they suffer from massive insurance costs and uneven quality of care, and thus
understanding the debate about the two diametrically opposed viewpoints requires an in depth
understanding of the current health care issues in the United States (Rashidian, Joudaki, Vian,
Baradaran, 2012). Essentially, this paper will identify one common health care issue, particularly

Analysis Of The Poem The Harbormaster By Frank O Hara
To the Harbormaster : An Open Letter to God
At first glance, it appears as though O Hara s poem To the Harbormaster is about a man sailing a
turbulent sea, but there is far more to examine past the surface level of the poem. O Hara chooses to
use the word vessel (14) in the poem. The Oxford English dictionary defines the word vessel in
multiple ways. One is any structure designed to float upon and traverse the water for the carriage of
persons or goods; a craft or ship of any kind. It is also defined as Said of the body, esp. as the
receptacle of the soul and has origins in that context from the bible (OED). In Frank O Hara s poem
To the Harbormaster, the harbormaster is actually a metaphor for God, which can be examined by
unpacking the meaning of the word vessel, and illuminates the human experience of grappling with
religion.
In To the Harbormaster, the word vessel is meant literally as a ship. He uses nautical imagery all
throughout: ship (2), moorings (3), tide (5), rudder (8), hull (10), cordage (10), reeds (13), and finally
vessel (14). In this way, and for the metaphor of someone at sea throughout, at the surface level of the
poem, vessel is used to describe a ship. However, when further examining the word vessel as meaning
a body or receptacle for the soul, and the biblical origins associated with that meaning, one is able to
find several examples to back up an alternate and deeper meaning. In the lines, To / you I offer my
hull and

To start off, a part I did not like about the book was the part about Ove s dad. I felt as though this
complicated the plot a lot and was not necessary to the base of the book. It did not need to be added
into the book because it had no effect to my understanding of what was happening in the book. If
anything it made me more confused because it went back in time, then it came back to the present and
it was confusing what time period we were in at the moment. A good part of the book was when
Parvaneh was becoming friends with Ove because he needed to get out of his daily routine. Ove
needed someone to shake up the life he had been living for many years. I would not recommend this
book to adolescents because the book was confusing at some points and the humor was guided
towards the adults. Personally, I would read another book by Fredrik Backman because the book was
still very well written. I also could understand the book, for the most part. To continue, this book
would be better read by adults because the humor was more guided to that age group. Also, this book
is still relevant today because people do not live forever. We have to learn to move on from the bad
times just like Ove did. When a loved one dies we feel grief, but like Ove we use the people around us
to begin to feel better about what happened to us. In conclusion, this was a good book and I would rate
it three out of five

Importance Of The Tenth Amendment
The Tenth Amendment
The powers not delegated to the united states by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are

The Tenth Amendment: Protecting Freedom Against Big Government
The Tenth Amendment protects Americans from intrusive federal government action, The federal

Creative Play
There is often debate as to whether it s more important to provide children with free time for creative
play, or to ensure that they participate in more organized activity. In the first article the author refers to
creative play as a way to help children learn how to express themselves and promote independent
thinking. Whereas in the second article it states that organized activities are more important in the
sense that they teach children things like commitment, teamwork, and devoloping healthy attitudes
towards themselves. I believe that each of these methods have their own merit, and that a combination
of both is best for a childs development. For example, I don t think it s healthy to fill all of a child s

Adolescent Rumination
The majority of research investigating rumination and its role in the maintenance and exacerbation of
depressive mood has been conducted in adults. However, a few of studies have examined
developmental changes in rumination and its relation to concurrent depression, and depressive
symptoms over time, in youth samples. Research on developmental changes in emotion regulation
strategies has found age dependent increases in emotion focused coping among children and
adolescents, indicating that these strategies may be underdeveloped in childhood (e.g., Compas,
Malcarne, Fondacaro, 1988; D. Donaldson, Prinstein, Danovksy, Spirito, 2000; Frydenberg Lewis,
1993). One study focusing specifically on ruminative coping found that the occurrence of rumination
tends to increase from late childhood through adolescence, ages 8 to 14 years, and that children and

In a review, Rood, Roelofs, Bogels, Nolen Hoeksema, and Schouten (2009) identified cross sectional
and longitudinal studies that examined the relations between rumination and symptoms of depression
in non clinical youth. The authors then pooled the effect sizes from each study into an overall weighed
effect size. Regarding the cross sectional findings, the mean effect size for the relation between
rumination and concurrent levels of depressive symptoms was moderate for child samples (r = .36,
95% CI [.31, .40]) and moderate to high for adolescent samples (r = .48, 95% CI [.46 to .51]). Pooled
effect sizes for longitudinal studies investigating the role of rumination in the maintenance and
exacerbation of depressive symptom were low for the child samples (r = .27, 95% CI [.21, .33]) and
moderate for the adolescent samples (r = .36, 95% CI [.31, .42]). These results indicate that
rumination is significantly related to depressive symptoms in youth, but that the relation is stronger in
adolescents than

Salsa Documentary Summary
Watching this documentary really expanded my knowledge of the rich history of salsa. Prior to the
documentary, my knowledge was very limited. Growing up in a Hispanic household, salsa and other
Spanish music was regularly playing. My parent pushed it on me and my brother, encouraging to learn
about our rich culture. So everything I knew about the salsa revolution (before watching the
documentary) came from my parents who really grew up listening to it and who were constantly
surrounded by it growing up. What I found interesting about salsa is it grew out of the wish to move
away from the norm of Latin music that was already placed at that. The early form of salsa, Latin
Boogaloo, allowed young Puerto Rican musicians a chance to express themselves

Compare And Contrast Culture And American Culture
Culture is a very vital part of the world as we know it today. There are very many different cultures all
around the world. In the USA, we have a mix of all the different cultures and and family values. From
the original Native Americans that inhabited America to the Middle Eastern people in Afghanistan.
These people groups have brought their language, food, values, and customs with them.
There are lots of different types of families in today s American society. Mine is a little bit weird. My
parents got divorced when I was about 5 years old. My Dad re married when I was about 8 and then
got divorced again. My mom remarried when I was around 11 years old. My dad re married again
around the same time. It seems like in today s society that more and more families are becoming split
households. That is the culture difference between the USA and other countries. In the earlier years of
the United States, many people looked down on divorce. Divorce was like a curse word to them back
then.

Arctic sea ice has receded dramatically as a result of rising temperatures, and this will continue
(Johannessen, Miles). As sea ice melts natural resources, sea life, and trade routes will become more

agreements, countries with access to the Arctic are increasing their military presence in the region to
control trade, extract natural resources, and secure their nations. Expect these trends to continue, as
countries with Arctic access cement their claims with international treaties rather than military might.

Comparing The Handmaid s Tale And The Blind Assassin
Margaret Atwood uses allusions and symbolism to convey the idea that society strips women of their
full potential in order to justify their oppression. This can be seen in her novels through the constraints
placed on the main female characters. In The Handmaid s Tale Atwood depicts a dystopian society
which appears to be an extreme version of the oppression present in today s society; whereas, in The
Blind Assassin Atwood analyzes oppression through a more realistic lens.
Atwood begins the novel, The Handmaid s Tale with three epigraphs. The first alludes to Genesis 30:1
3, which states: And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and
said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. And Jacob s anger ... Show more content on

Atwood wrote the novel from multiple viewpoints and sources to [make] the story a suspenseful read,

questioning what constitutes truth, Atwood is highlighting how sexual victims and women are often
questioned, even though they have nothing to gain from telling the truth, and the men defying them
have everything to lose. Women are stripped of not only their potential, but of their accountability, to
justify the continuation of their oppression. If no one sides with them, their exploitation will continue

Sociological Imagination The Act Of Drinking Tea
Word Count:
1. By using sociological imagination, the act of drinking tea can be interpreted in more ways than just
the basic interpretation of simply ingesting a beverage. For example, the gathering of people to meet
for tea is a social outcome of the act of drinking tea. Also, the act of tea drinking can be for the
purpose of maintaining health as tea is typically a healthy beverage. Lastly, tea drinking and producing
was used in many cultures as a sort of ritual. In Asian cultures a tea ceremony was practiced to
promote harmony. Sociology applies in my life in that its research explains many of my questions

We have to imagine the perceptions of other concerning ourselves because unless that person or
people tell us how they feel about us, we will have no way to determine their true feelings. We
imagine these perceptions in a variety of ways. For example, by interpreting nonverbal
communication we can develop an idea as how people perceive us.
7. Our self concepts are affected by the thoughts of others more greatly than we may think. How
others think of us is reflected in how they treat us. A major example of this is bullying. For example,
the bullies view the victim as weaker or lesser than themselves and as a result the victim is left with a
feeling of worthlessness or having no purpose. This changes the self concept of the victim because
now they may be closed off and quiet when perhaps before they were outspoken and sociable.
8. The looking glass self has a crucial impact on children. This is because as they are going through
the developmental stages of self, children will be very conscious of those around them and how those
people view them. For example, if a parent is constantly yelling, even if it is not always directed at the
child, the child would most likely feel that the parent is angry with them. This is turn will cause the
child to feel like a problem; therefore, affecting their self concept making the child feel unworthy or

The Wanderer Essay
In Anglo Saxon culture blood feud was a common occurrence and if left unchecked could leave an
entire area devoid of people that once called it home due to infighting. To avoid furthering conflict one
could also pay the wer gild but if the murderer refused to pay the wer gild they would be exiled from
their society of forced to live on their own on the fringes of civilization. The Wanderer is from the
perspective of one man who was exiled after a blood feud and this part of his story is critical to
understanding the poem within the context of the culture it was written. However The Wanderer has a
backdrop of blood feud and punishment by exile surrounding it but it is not by itself a poem that
condemns either of those things instead it contends with the idea of wyrd or fate and how it is
inescapable. The weary mind cannot withstand wyrd (The Wanderer ll. 15) this line very early on in

all the other worldly goods the speaker of the poem has grown accustomed to and loved. The poem

The Apology And Phaedo By Plato Essay
The Apology and Phaedo by Plato are two different books describing what is like to be a philosopher
per Socrates believes. These two books take place in two different scenarios in Socrates life, The
Apology takes place in a court room where Socrates is to defend himself from false charges brought to
him by Meletus who is acting as the prosecutor. Phaedo, on the other hand, takes place in a prison cell
post judgment on the day of Socrates execution. Hence, The Apology and Phaedo appeared to display
different philosophies: The Apology, Plato presented Socrates as wise for he knows that he knows
nothing, hence he is seeking wisdom by questioning those who think they know more or something,
just to find that they don t know anything, therefore Socrates makes it his duty to make them look
ignorant/stupid. Phaedo, Socrates focuses primarily on death and the immortality of the soul, hence he
is seeking knowledge by devoting his final hours picking the minds of his friends to explain the role of
a philosopher, which is preparing for death. Consequently, these two views are really the same, yet
presented differently by Socrates, for in one he is defending his freedom and life using philosophy,
hence he has only done what the Gods expected of him. From the other view, he resigned to his fate,
for as a philosopher, he knows his soul will finally become liberated from the evils and limitations of
the body to come to its divine state.

Medieval Universities In The Middle Ages
The idea of a university, an institution composed of students seeking higher education in particular
subjects, facilitated by teachers who are knowledgeable in the subject he or she teaches, is one of
many concepts that has survived throughout the Middle Ages into modern day ( university ). Although
the idea of a university has evolved over time since the Middle Ages, the general concepts of a
university have remained the same, allowing for the successful comparison and contrasting of the
changes in what was considered university, or universitas Latin, commonly used as the language in
which lectures were given, for university in medieval times, and what is now considered a university

The main four disciplines that were established to be studied in medieval universities were theology,
law, medicine, and letters what we know today as liberal arts ( Legacies of the Middle Ages ). Oxford
University originally specialized in the arts, civil and canon law, and theology in the twelfth century,
incorporating medicine as a track of study in the thirteenth century. Oxford, along with Bologna, Paris,
and Montpelier belonged to the primary band of European universities in medieval times (Cobban 4).
The universities in the Middle Ages existed not solely for the purpose of teaching, but also to facilitate
research and debate, and that its curriculum covered both religious and secular subjects ( Legacies of
the Middle Ages ). In addition to the four main disciplines of study previously mentioned, logical
analysis applied to all subjects being studied. In the Middle Ages, students gained a facility in the
application of rational argument to intellectual propositions, the essence of the scholastic method as it
had evolved from the twelfth century and even earlier (Cobban 150). Students attending medieval
English universities studied the trivium, consisting of classes focusing on the effective usage of logic,
grammar, and rhetoric. Arithmetic and astronomy, a mix of classical, Arabic, and contemporary
sources, also played a major role in specific subjects studied in medieval universities (Cobban 155
57). Although the universities in medieval times taught subjects that are worldly, English scholars
were subject to ecclesiastical courts. An abundance of scholars not only received a degree from the
university, but they also acquired clerical status (Cobban 2). In the days since the formation of the
university in the Middle Ages, the amount of courses available for students to study has increased

How Romanticism Has Diminish Throughout Popularity
My part starts by talking about how romanticism had diminish in popularity. The book talks about
how drama was in a period of conflict, in which serious romantics wanted Art to target a sensitive
audience making it more limited. In contrast, extremist wanted to created closet drama which means
that they wanted plays to be read instead of been acted. By 1840s romanticism was no longer a
movement and even though it had effectively ended with neoclassicism it did not changed theatre
completely. Romanticism established the idea of an artist as someone who was exceptional,
sentimental, with great abilities, and inspired. It also established Art as something important just like a

I think that his ideas were fascinating because he tried to go away from the standard idea of assigning
places according to the person s importance in society but rather made the actors the main focus for
everyone. I think of this as a way to make the audience all the same making the actors the only
celebrities in the room. Also the idea that everyone had the same opportunity to the same view went
away By the nineteenth century melodramas and sentimental comedies were popular in commercial
theater. However, reformers saw these plays as a waste of resources because they wanted plays to
portray stories that could be considered more seriously by the audience. The need for more seriousness
in plays eventually lead to the creation of realism. As mentioned by Boime, realism was committed to
reproducing aspects of the unstable world of sensory perception (77). The idea of realism was to
create plays that portrayed everyday life and events. As time changed and more problems in society
emerge, such as industrialization and inequality, plays also transformed. For instance, radical realists
wanted plays to portray this events as a way to not only represent current situations but also as a way
to promote a change for these situations. In other words, the main idea of realism was to question and
challenge the current state of society. We have to think that during this period of time science was
evolving and society was more open to acknowledge it. The

Compare And Contrast The Nlb And The National Labor...
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), also
known as a Wagner Act of 1935, permit workers to create unions and choose representatives to
support their rights. The union representation and support are significant elements that protect workers
from illegal actions like discrimination and adverse employment actions. Many employees view job
security as a guarantee of work. The union safeguard employees and represent their rights during
layoffs, and other hard economic times. The idea to establish and support seniority was created based
on job protection and security. The ratio rank principle combines seniority lists by determining a ratio
based on the total number of workers. Many laws, such as a last hired, first fired, created to encourage

Motivation And Motivation For An Effective Manager
Motivation
Job performance is essentially a function of ability and motivation. One s ability can be developed
through training, education, and work experience. However, substantial developments in motivation
can be obtained fairly quickly. As an effective manager, may achieve a significant increase in your
team s performance by improving its motivation; this begins with understanding what motivates
people. According to Maslow Hierarchy of needs theory (Robbins et al., 2014), there are 5 levels of
motivation that a manager should recognize as it relates to what motivates individuals and how people
are motivated. This has been demonstrated throughout my career as different things motivate different
people. The motivation can come right ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both motivation systems are part of the Cognitive Evaluation Theory. A cognitive evaluation theory is
a precursor of self determination theory and centers on the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation (Vallerand, 2000, p 2). The theory is regarding material or non material motivators and
managers knowing the people they are managing.
Decision Making Communication When it comes to communication and decision making traits, many
behaviors can be a subset of the above theories. As Maslow s hierarchal theory suggests many
decisions are psychological in nature (Amondt, 2014). The perceives at the time of conceiving things
actually make a judgmental stage for taking decisions. The ERG theory of realization actually helps in
making a sound decision and perfect communication (Robbins, et al., 2014). To be an effective leader,
one must be able to make good decisions and be a strong communicator. For better communication, it
is encouraged to follow best practices, such as having enough patience and demonstrating listening
skills. In my experience, getting people motivated is not always an easy task. Management must

Fibrodysplasia Research Paper
Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva is a rare disease that over activates osteogenesis, or bone

the stiffening of the body, causing restricted mobility. Overall, the predisposition for fibrodysplasia is
extremely low for individuals worldwide, as it only affects 1 in 2 million people (10). There seems to
be no clear correlation of demographics of people suffering from FOP; the genetic disorder occurs
randomly. However, those who live with the disorder face a difficult predicament.
To start, it is a congenital disorder, meaning noticeable symptoms or physical malformations occur
before birth. A common observable malformation signifying FOP at birth, are the abnormal position
and structure of the big toes (5). The disorder slowly consumes an individual s life by adding bone to

There are treatments that can help sustain quality of life for individuals with FOP. For example,
steroids, such as glucocorticoids, can be used to help with relieving some mobility restrictions related
to the overabundance of bone on muscles (10). More specifically, these help minimize the flare up
effects on heterotopic osteogenesis. Other possible treatments may involve the creation of inhibitors to
block BMP pathway activity and signal transduction. Recently, Dorsomorphin, a signal transduction

Colin Powell Leadership Principles
Three Leadership Principles from the Colin Powell 18 Leadership Principles
After reading all 18 of Colin Powell leadership principles, three of the principles stood out that I could
identify with. The first, Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off.
The second principle, The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped
leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not
care. Either case is a failure of leadership. I also identify with Colin Powell s seventeenth principle,
Have fun in your command. Don t always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you ve earned it:
Spend time with your families. Corollary: Surround yourself with people who take their work
seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard. Colin Powell s first principle was
something I deal with daily. Working in food service for over 24 years you learn that you cannot make
everyone happy. Since 2011, I have been the Food Program Manager for the INARNG. I approve or
disapprove rations requests for all the Indiana Army National Guard units and submit their requests to
the state approved contracted vendor. The vendor has a timeline to which they can process the orders
and work with their vendors to get ration items into their warehouse. The State Food Service SOP
specifies the timelines for ration requests when using the Army Food Management System (AFMIS).
If a unit does not meet the time requirements for our state vendor, then I will disapprove the request. I
will give the unit limited choices for other types of rations, usually Tailored Operational Training
Rations (TOTM), similar to MRE s. Some First Sergeants and company Commanders complain about
their meals, but I inform them on the State Food Service policy for submitting requests. If I let one
unit slide, then all of them will expect the same treatment. Recently, a new supply NCO took over one

Mary Wollstonecraft died from giving birth to Mary Godwin. Because of this, William had to care for

Fanny killed herself. The sadness was short lived however, because soon after this, Percy s wife killed
herself, and Mary and Percy finally could wed, and they did so in December of

If There Is An Artist
If there is an artist, who can challenge the coexistence of beauty and ugliness, it s Bart Hess. Hess is
not only a believer of the beauty in ugly, he pushes his fascination for the human body constantly,
exploring and manipulating textile design, to create tactile textures and surfaces within material which
blur the boundary between human and new species. His work becomes a questionable object of
perception. During his graduation project at Eindhoven Design Academy, Hess worked on a series of
fake furs, made out of metals, silicone and plastics. The idea of the soft, fluffy, tactile quality of fur
being lost, transcending when coming into contact, it becomes a cold, sharp, dangerous object. Row
upon Row of endless needles inserted into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then photographing their bodies using the most peculiar of materials, they created fascinating and
simultaneously repugnant images of Globules of Foam engulfing the body, asymmetric spines, bulged
oversized muscled forms. What becomes more apparent within the photographs, the disturbing blank
expressions, the non existent emotional state of the subject, just starring back at you. It is not horrified
or excited about the change of their form, they are merely present and allow themselves to be shown
to you. It s a purely visceral and visually arresting experience, that sort of lucid acceptance, clearly not
hiding the kind of imperfections and oddities that society mostly trains us to be ashamed of. They are
unnervingly confident about themselves. Lucy and Bart s photographs, no matter how unnerving they
might be, present us with a strong character, something to possibly compare with the likes of Picasso
and Da Vinci s painted subjects. The rest is up to the viewer.
There s something so primal and immediate about seeing human bodies mutated. It calls into
questions all of our ideals about beauty and they way we judge people based on their surfaces. This
odd sort of artistic mingling where the colours are beautiful, but the shapes are grotesque is really
jarring. Or maybe it s the way they seem to know something about their aberrations that we don t.
Like we ve yet to have any idea the kind of powers that lie inside their new bodies and hands and
faces, and as long

Death Of A Salesman American Dream
Arthur Miller s Death of A Salesman shows us the necessity to keep the idea and hope of the American
Dream alive. Throughout the play, the character Willy shows us what happens when the American
Dream is at risk. When he starts to lose his ability to continue to live this dream it puts him in a place
of confusion because of all the years and time he has put in to live the dream that people say he
should.
One distinct way Miller shows how people stand by the notion of the American Dream. Miller
describes how Willy is living the dream. Willy had everything that is supposed to be a part of the
American Dream. He had a family, a house, and a job. The picturesque idea of what it means to have
the American Dream, but when he lost his job we saw

The wind blows not quite choosing a direction, the trees rustle and whisper secrets I will never know.
A chill runs through my body as the cool wind hits me and starts to slowly seep through the thin fabric
of my sweats. The wind helps simmer the sweltering heat that the sun seems to create. Wind chimes
sing a loud song as the wind runs through them, causing them to clang together and fight for space. I
close my eyes and take in my surroundings using hearing and touch. I let the wind attack me from
different ways, hear the horns and wheels of cars as they speed past on the highway. A sense of
calmness sweeps over me, my body relaxes and my heart beat slows down. I feel completely at ease,

I smile as the wind picks up once again, my toes go numb as I walk down my cement walkway
towards the sidewalk. I look up once again to be greeted with dark angry clouds clashing against a
blue sky. The winds seem to bring the angry clouds with it yet I don t mind, if anything it brings me
happiness. A fire truck s siren slices through the silence like a sharp knife breaking me out of my
separate little world.
I feel as if the rains wash away my problems that have been following me around. I sense a new
beginning, a feeling of renewal washes over me as the cool rain droplets hit my face. Despite the loud
angry siren slicing through the air, a calm blanket wraps around me, the excitement from earlier is
long gone. As I scan my surroundings and I m reminded that this is my home, it always has been and
always will

  • 2. Analysis Of The From The Scarlet Letter Kianna A. Coley Cooper AP Lang Comp 10 December 2014 Composition: Analysis Chapter Nine, The Leech from the Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of the most iconic books in history; its storyline, theme and literal characters have made an impact on the world of literature for hundreds of years. What stands out the most in the book is the use of archaic diction and figurative language, which serve to paint vivid, descriptive pictures of each character, specifically, Roger Chillingworth. In chapter nine of The Scarlet Letter, The Leech , Nathaniel Hawthorne uses setting, allusion, metaphor, irony, diction, and tone to reveal Roger Chillingworth, the town Leech s, evil, ominous character displayed by his actions and words. Throughout chapter nine of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne places Chillingworth in or near the cemetery by the widow s house, an ominous setting that foreshadows his death. During the book as a whole, Chillingworth usually pops up in spooky settings, such as Hester s jail cell, the woods, Dimmesdale s dark lit room, and the scaffold at night, these all playing into the eerie nature of Chillingworth himself. Towards the beginning of this chapter, it is suggested that Chillingworth had come to terms with the reality of his estranged wife, Hester, having a child by another man, and was so distraught and embarrassed that he changed his identity with a vengeance. Unknown to all but Hester Prynne... he chose to withdraw his name ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Colonization Of North America Essay During the sixteenth century European pilgrims migrated across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America. North America had just been introduced to the Western Civilization. The America s were home to the indigenous people, that were made up of several tribes that were called Indians by the early settlers. Together the Indians and settlers began to thrive. Growth and development in the new world was made possible by the abundant amount of natural resources. These early settlers had a major influence on the joining of these two cultures. Settlers started to inhabit and populate along the east coast and moving north and south. They began organising into colonies and called themselves colonist. Colonist enjoyed freedoms and opportunities that they never had. Owning land was never possible in the colonist previous civilization. Colonist were also free to decide how they wanted to make a living unlike the peasant life that many of them had known before. One of the biggest reasons the colonist were so enthusiastic because they got to worship how they wanted. They were finally able to practice and believe in God to their best understanding. For centuries very few people have had this right, to worship as they desire. One can see why the colonist lived with so much passion and pride in this new life style. During the 1700s there began to be uneasiness and frustration amongst the colonist. Much of the frustration grew because of the unfair dominion that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Skateboarding is a hard sport to learn. It s not something that can be learned overnight. Even the top pros like Paul Rodriguez and Eric Koston still learn new things even though they have been doing it for years. With skateboarding, there are endless possibilities when it comes to tricks. When it comes to beginners, learning the basics is the best way to start this great pastime. First, you should know the anatomy of your skateboard. A skateboard consists of a deck, trucks, wheels, and bearings. Grip tape is used to help your feet grip the board. Hardware is used to bolt your trucks to the deck and nuts are used to fasten the wheels on. For information on skateboard products, visit your local skateboard retailer. When it comes to skateboarding the first and foremost thing you should learn is how ride. Most people who have never ridden a skateboard get on the first time and wipe out. Skateboarding requires a great deal balance. You must always maintain your center of gravity directly over your board. If you lean too far back, chances are you will fall backwards and the board will shoot out from under you. If you lean too far forward, chances are you will fall on your face. Maintaining your weight directly over your board, is the most important thing to know. You should practice by placing your board on carpet or grass and standing on it with your feet over the ... Mozart Symphony No. 40 Kendall Kaatz Dr. Galit Kaunitz Music Appreciation 1590 08 Due date: 9/30/14 Mozart Symphony No. 40 The piece that I decide to do was Mozart Symphony No. 40 because it seemed like it would have the most instruments, different dynamics and a different sound to it. There were a lot of instruments you could hear when you first listened to this piece. The first instruments that I heard right away were the violins, flutes, and oboes. As I kept listening I noticed the clarinets, bassoons, cello, viola, and the French horn. The instruments that seemed like they were the most important in this piece were the violins, because they started the piece and through out the rest of the piece they were always there being the main part of this piece. The melody in the first movement opens with the violins and they are then accompany by the violas and the cello. As you keep listening you notice that French horn, clarinets, flutes, and oboes contribute to the harmony. The first movement is also in the key signature of G minor. As you move through the first movement you enter into the second section which is in a different key. The key signature of the second movement is in B flat major. The instruments that have the melody this time are the violins along with the clarinets and bassoons. The mood through out the piece to me seemed to have a lightness and grace to it. During the piece I also realized that you pick up on a dark undertone. The dark undertone is in the harmony of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. 2000 Us Presidential Election Essay Introduction The US Presidential Election of 2000 featured George W. Bush and Al Gore. It will go down in history as one of the most closest elections¡¦ in US history. It also goes down as one of the most controversial. The final decision was based on just a few hundred votes in Florida. The controversy began when the media prematurely declared the winner twice based solely on exit polls. They finally conceded that the Florida count was just too close to predict. It would take a month before the election was ultimately certified after numerous court challenges and vote recounts. As in the past, the media was covering the all important election. They had always relied on exit polls as the polls closed across the nation. In reality, the Florida results were just too close to call. Nevertheless, that did not stop the media from doing so. Not once, but twice, major news media outlets were erroneous in their report. Around 8pm, it was declared that Al Gore was the projected winner of the electoral votes in the state of Florida. However, a couple of hours later, the projection was retracted and restated as Florida as being too close to call. Then, just after 2am on November 8, the mistake was made for a second time. The major networks declared George W. as the winner. This even led to Al Gore calling the Governor to concede. However, as Gore prepared to address his supporters in Nashville, Tennessee, he was alert to the shrinking numbers in Bush¡¦s lead. The final total was now less than one half of a percent lead in favor of Bush. That immediately calls for a recount of votes under state law. Subsequently, Gore called Bush and retracted his concession. It wasn¡¦t over yet! One thing was, Al Gore had prevailed in the popular vote but without Florida¡¦s tally, the electoral vote was up in the air. The election wasn¡¦t over and the recounts began. • 11. Essay on Explaining Aggression Explaining Aggression One of the achievements of social psychology has been in extending explanations of aggression and violence away from merely being reflections of the inner state of individuals There many ways of explaining aggressive behaviour in humans. Joseph said that the experiment only involves harm to an inflatable doll not a human being, therefore it is not a good example of aggression. Johnston found that children who behaved violently towards the doll were rated as more violent generally by teachers. Aggression is often described as antisocial behaviour but by observing adult aggressive behaviour being rewarded children may think this behaviour is acceptable and normative. Therefore it shows that social learning theory explains that is more about learning behaviour rather than being a reflection of an individual s inner state. It also explains the findings which show that children who watch violent films are more likely to behave in an aggressive way. Social learning theory can account for cultural and individual variation; it can also explain why we behave aggressively in some situations and not others. When we are rewarded or reinforced for behaving aggressively this is related to specific situations, in other situations we may find this behaviour isn t rewarded. This is known as context dependent learning. In spite of the success of social learning theory, there are reasons for arguing that Bandura s approach is limited and that aggressive ... Per Hadley v Baxendale remoteness is satisfied where the damage either: (a) arose naturally according to the usual course of things, from the breach; or (b) may reasonably be supposed to have been in the contemplation of both parties at the time they made the contract, as a probable result of the breach. Applying the first limb, the students were presumably aware that subletting was a serious possibility in termination and loss of future rent payments (until a new tenant was found), thus rendering the loss reasonably foreseeable . While the students may argue that the extent of the loss as a full three months of lost rent renders the loss too remote, per H Parsons (Livestock) Ltd v Uttley Ingham, the foreseeability of the extent of the harm is irrelevant where the type of harm was foreseeable (as satisfied above). • 17. The Current State Of Health Care System Essay Introduction The current state of United States health care system is one of the most polarizing subjects of debate among scholars and other health care professionals across the globe. This can be attributed to the fact that at one extreme end, there are some who argue that that Americans have the best system of health care in the world (MePhee, 2013). Perhaps the availability of the state of the art facilities and free medical technology that have become highly symbolic of the various industries in the United States have motivated the idea of the country s health care system being unparalleled to others. However, there is a common belief that the fight for universal health care can only be successful if its current state of health care is described as a failure in the modern era as emphasized by MePhee (2013). As a matter of fact Wise and Yashiro, 2006 assert that there some individuals who describe the America s system as being fragmented and inefficient, considering the staggering statistics regarding how Americans spend more on health care compared to other countries in the world. Additionally, they suffer from massive insurance costs and uneven quality of care, and thus understanding the debate about the two diametrically opposed viewpoints requires an in depth understanding of the current health care issues in the United States (Rashidian, Joudaki, Vian, Baradaran, 2012). • 18. Analysis Of The Poem The Harbormaster By Frank O Hara To the Harbormaster : An Open Letter to God At first glance, it appears as though O Hara s poem To the Harbormaster is about a man sailing a turbulent sea, but there is far more to examine past the surface level of the poem. O Hara chooses to use the word vessel (14) in the poem. The Oxford English dictionary defines the word vessel in multiple ways. One is any structure designed to float upon and traverse the water for the carriage of persons or goods; a craft or ship of any kind. It is also defined as Said of the body, esp. as the receptacle of the soul and has origins in that context from the bible (OED). In Frank O Hara s poem To the Harbormaster, the harbormaster is actually a metaphor for God, which can be examined by unpacking the meaning of the word vessel, and illuminates the human experience of grappling with religion. In To the Harbormaster, the word vessel is meant literally as a ship. He uses nautical imagery all throughout: ship (2), moorings (3), tide (5), rudder (8), hull (10), cordage (10), reeds (13), and finally vessel (14). In this way, and for the metaphor of someone at sea throughout, at the surface level of the poem, vessel is used to describe a ship. However, when further examining the word vessel as meaning a body or receptacle for the soul, and the biblical origins associated with that meaning, one is able to find several examples to back up an alternate and deeper meaning. If anything it made me more confused because it went back in time, then it came back to the present and it was confusing what time period we were in at the moment. A good part of the book was when Parvaneh was becoming friends with Ove because he needed to get out of his daily routine. Ove needed someone to shake up the life he had been living for many years. I would not recommend this book to adolescents because the book was confusing at some points and the humor was guided towards the adults. Personally, I would read another book by Fredrik Backman because the book was still very well written. I also could understand the book, for the most part. To continue, this book would be better read by adults because the humor was more guided to that age group. Also, this book is still relevant today because people do not live forever. We have to learn to move on from the bad times just like Ove did. When a loved one dies we feel grief, but like Ove we use the people around us to begin to feel better about what happened to us. However, a few of studies have examined developmental changes in rumination and its relation to concurrent depression, and depressive symptoms over time, in youth samples. Research on developmental changes in emotion regulation strategies has found age dependent increases in emotion focused coping among children and adolescents, indicating that these strategies may be underdeveloped in childhood (e.g., Compas, Malcarne, Fondacaro, 1988; D. Donaldson, Prinstein, Danovksy, Spirito, 2000; Frydenberg Lewis, 1993). Growing up in a Hispanic household, salsa and other Spanish music was regularly playing. My parent pushed it on me and my brother, encouraging to learn about our rich culture. So everything I knew about the salsa revolution (before watching the documentary) came from my parents who really grew up listening to it and who were constantly surrounded by it growing up. Our self concepts are affected by the thoughts of others more greatly than we may think. How others think of us is reflected in how they treat us. A major example of this is bullying. For example, the bullies view the victim as weaker or lesser than themselves and as a result the victim is left with a feeling of worthlessness or having no purpose. This changes the self concept of the victim because now they may be closed off and quiet when perhaps before they were outspoken and sociable. 8. These two books take place in two different scenarios in Socrates life, The Apology takes place in a court room where Socrates is to defend himself from false charges brought to him by Meletus who is acting as the prosecutor. Phaedo, on the other hand, takes place in a prison cell post judgment on the day of Socrates execution. Hence, The Apology and Phaedo appeared to display different philosophies: The Apology, Plato presented Socrates as wise for he knows that he knows nothing, hence he is seeking wisdom by questioning those who think they know more or something, just to find that they don t know anything, therefore Socrates makes it his duty to make them look ignorant/stupid. Phaedo, Socrates focuses primarily on death and the immortality of the soul, hence he is seeking knowledge by devoting his final hours picking the minds of his friends to explain the role of a philosopher, which is preparing for death. Consequently, these two views are really the same, yet presented differently by Socrates, for in one he is defending his freedom and life using philosophy, hence he has only done what the Gods expected of him. Also the idea that everyone had the same opportunity to the same view went away By the nineteenth century melodramas and sentimental comedies were popular in commercial theater. However, reformers saw these plays as a waste of resources because they wanted plays to portray stories that could be considered more seriously by the audience. The need for more seriousness in plays eventually lead to the creation of realism.
