Greek Architecture
The Greek culture has had a huge impact on the history of the world. There is something Greek in
almost everything, especially in the world s architecture. Greece no longer had one king, so they
focused on building temples for their gods. Architecture began small and plain but evolved into
impressive pieces of art. As time passed from the Archaic period to the Hellenistic period, the people
of Greece developed a type of formula for their buildings and their pieces of art. In Ancient Greece,
religion dominated their life, so it is understandable that their architecture would be dominated by
their religion. Before Greece became many different city states, they had kings, and they would build
a room called a megaron to show they King s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They didn t want a column in the middle because than you would have to walk around the column to
get into the temple. The most common temples would be called hexastyle because it would have six
columns in the front. If there was four columns across then it would be called tetrastyle or eight across
would be called octastyle. Another way to classify a temple is how the columns are distributed. When
a temple only has a row of columns on the front and has end walls, it is called in antis. If the temple
has a row of columns on the front with no end walls, it is called prostyle. If a temple has a front and
back portico with columns, it is called amphiprostyle. The most famous Greek temples would be
considered to be peripteral, meaning that it has columns all the way around the building. The Greeks
had a certain formula on how many columns would go on each side of a peripertal temple. They
would take the number of columns in the front portico and multiply it by two and add one. If your
temple was hexastyle and peripertal, than there would be thirteen columns on each side ( 6+6+1= 13).
The Greeks had developed a type of formula when it came to the construction of a temple. There is not
a major difference in architecture between the Archaic period and the Classical period. During the
Archaic period they began to use stone instead of wood. Some of the most preserved remains

How Did The Us Convert To The Metric System
When the United States separated from Britain they kept the original Imperial measurement system
despite disregarding the previous government. Ever since America has used inches, feet, and yards as
standard measurement. However, while the U.S. continued to use the imperial system other countries
progressed. In 1799, after the french revolution, France converted to the metric system. Invented by
Gabriel Monton in France 1670, the metric system uses common powers of ten to measure weight and
lengths so that it could be conveniently used with decimals. Soon the metric system had spread from
France to Britain and most of the world. Countries now use the metric system to measure length, area,
volume, mass, force, pressure, energy, power, and temperature. ... Show more content on

By converting to the metric system our trade would increase because there would no longer be a need
to change between systems and other countries could view the modification as making amends. It
could also save millions of dollars for the U.S. because large companies like NASA would all be on
the same page using the metric system. Smaller mistakes could also be prevented by swapping to the
much simpler metric system. One last thing the change would impact is education. If kids no longer
had to learn two measurement systems they would have more time to learn other material. All in all, If
america wants to prosper economically and in education then the government must make the switch to

Track and field is an extremely unique sport. Unlike most other sports, track and field is an umbrella
for the many events it includes. Track and field has a very long history and inclusive evolution. Since
the beginning of its modern history, spectators have adored cheering on their favorite runners,
jumpers, and throwers.
The elements of track and field are long distance, short distance, and the field evets. The sprinting or
short distance events include the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, 800 meter, relay races, and hurdles
races. Long distance events include the marathon, which is 26 miles, the 5,000 meter, 10,000 meter,

The Conflict Of The Workplace
Conflict and knowing how to resolve the conflict are necessary in today s workforce.
Multigenerational workforces may generate more conflict than most related to the differences in job
performance. Moore (1986) states, conflict is a struggle between two or more people over values,
competition for status, power and scarce resources. (Moore, 1986, p. 64) Conflict can occur within
one individual, between two or more individuals, within one group, or between two or more groups.
(Sullivan, 2013)

upset that they risked a respiratory arrest for transfer ease. I asked the nurse, What made you think that
this mode of oxygenation was acceptable for transfer when in report other oxygen delivery was being
used? The question was not very well received and I was informed that the respiratory lead instructed

and had become a true ICU nurse. The humiliation that the emergency room nurse was now facing
grew exponentially at that point and I felt terrible as well, not realizing that everyone had heard what
had transpired because the unit was so quiet and the patient status had drawn so much attention.
Interpersonal conflict had occurred originally and then escalated into intergroup conflict in a matter of
moments. The conflict was quickly forgotten by me due to

Physics of Catapults Essay
The ballista, or shield piercer, was first developed by the Greeks using the same principles as a bow
and arrow. Its primary use was to, as the name suggests, pierce enemy shields, since normal bows
lacked the power to do so. Early versions of the ballista include the gastrophetes, which is nothing
more than an enlarged bow that can be braced against the users body.

mounted mechanisms that could be operated by two or more people. The Romans eventually modified

Using this relationship assumes that the force constant is constant, or that moving the arms back 2
meters gives twice the force that moving them back 1 meter would do, which is most likely not
correct, but close enough for a general assumption of the force to be made. When the force is applied,
the projectile is accelerated to the end of the ballista, at which point it released with a velocity v and
an angle q from the horizontal. The velocity can be found using the kinematic equation v2=2ax, where
a is the acceleration and x is the length of the ballista that the projectile is accelerated upon. Since
F=ma and F in this case is kd, the equation can be simplified into v2=2 kdx/m. After it is released, the
projectile obeys the laws of projectile motion, disregarding air resistance. Therefore, the range of the
ballista can be given by the equation
R=v2sin2q/g,
where g is the accleration due to gravity.
Mangonel History
The Romans, finding the ballista difficult to construct, simplified the design and created the onager. It
had one arm instead of two, and is what is most commonly identified as a catapult today.

Cross Cultural Conflicts And Cultural Values Essay
CROSS CULTURAL CONFLICTS
Abstract:
As said by Jonathan H. Turner cross cultural conflicts are differences in cultural values and beliefs that
place people at odds with one another . Generally cultural conflicts have been used to describe crime
and violence but that is a pretty narrow definition. The objective of this article is to elaborate upon the
conflicts varying across cultures, not only criminal but also cover various other aspects of it such as
identity conflicts, conflicts in ethnic and culture, etc. Globalisation has brought us closer together. In
the 21st century, we live for the first time in one global community. But it is a community composed
of many strands which must be carefully woven together into a whole. The article shows pluralism as
cross cultural conflict and goes deeper into the roots.
Introduction:
Civilization and culture today are facing various problems: the restructuring of the society, and
decreasing importance of cultural essentialism. There is an enormous cultural diversity in the world
today and people have been living with it. There are regions enriched with cultural diversity as well as
there as continents with large similarities in culture. Apart from conflicts in business and management
there are various day to day problems/differences which arise namely: Gender differences in child
rearing, behaviour across cultures, etc.
Civilizations are depicted as independent social spheres, which as a whole have a major effect on the

Darcy Deception
In the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen we have the opportunity to see first hand through the
eyes of the author an interpretation of what she perceives to be the social norms and expectations
revolving around different topics like marriage, love, and deception. The central plot in the novel
revolves around two main characters Elizabeth and Darcy. Despite any emotional connection or
mutual feelings they have for each other they are torn apart because of two different worlds society
makes them believe they live in. Throughout the novel, Darcy deceive the people around him mostly
the people he truly cares about in order to protect them. Darcy decides to do what he believes would
be the best thing to protect those he cares about in order to protect them and their feelings. Darcy s
best friend, Bingley finds himself attracted to Elizabeth s sister Jane. However, Darcy didn t see or
understand that Jane s guard was up and he genuinely believed that Jane didn t feel the same way.
Darcy then decides to stop anything between Bingley and Jane from happening in order to spare his
friends feelings. Further into the novel, Bingley and Jane end up being in London at the same time.
Darcy deceives Bingley once again and kept him away from knowing that Jane was in town as well.

Jefferson Davis
An Analysis of Jefferson Davis By: Blayden McLeod History 131 2101 John D. Sulentic September 3
Thesis Statement: Jefferson Davis was a very incompetent President and showed it by his policies and
lack of action during the Civil War Jefferson Davis was born June 3rd, 1808 on a small farm in
southwestern Kentucky from his parents Samuel Davis and Jane Cook Davis. After spending most of
his childhood life in the southern frontier of Mississippi, he decided to receive a quality education,
mainly because of his brilliance and strong intelligence. He attended many schools before he went on
to complete a four year term at West Point Military Academy which later appointed him a Second
Lieutenant in 1828. Davis was then commissioned to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the first major issues President Davis had to deal with was the decision to bombard Fort
Sumter. President Lincoln had basically notified the South Carolina Governor that he was sending a
ship with provisions to Fort Sumter, which is off the coast of Charleston, but actually the ship was
armed with troops. Confederate intelligence had intercepted this knowledge beforehand and they had
six men of war ships outside to intercept the ship. General Beauregard of the Confederate army was
given direct order from President Davis to demand immediate evacuation of Sumter and to use force if
there was no compliance. The Union Major Anderson ignored the commands and on April 12, 1861,
the Civil War had officially begun when Confederate troops bombarded Sumter. Anderson shortly
surrendered and sent the message to the North that is was no longer time for diplomatic solutions.
Davis felt Lincoln had maneuvered the south into firing the first shot and Davis said The assault was
made by sending a hostile fleet. Davis was forced to take active measures for defense when Lincoln
declared war on the South on April 15th and gathered many grateful volunteers who were glad to fight
for there cause. Later, and against Davis will, Richmond was voted the capitol of the Confederacy.
Despite Davis uncanny knack for being stubborn, he

The population of people living with disabilities are underrepresented within the American society.
Importantly, legislation and the workforce have misguided the appropriate treatment of disabled
people throughout history. The poor treatment that has been represented could be in part of the lack of
understanding of what the definition of disability truly is. Over time, this comprehension of disability
has changed as citizenship was challenged countless times on the basis of disability (Baynton 33).
From the year 1960, there have been numerous historical movements pleading for equality in the
United States. Unfortunately, the the population of people who live with disabilities have been majorly

Evaluating The Merits And Demerits Of Fixed And Floating...
Evaluate the merits and demerits of fixed and floating exchange rate regimes. Provide examples to
support your arguments. I. Intro Floating exchange rates and fixed exchange rates each provide
distinct advantages and disadvantages for a given regime. In any given state of the global economy,
one given country may be better suited for one system. But there are a number of factors that influence
this, and there is therefore no universal correct system for all international economies. I will discuss
the merits and demerits of a floating exchange rate, providing the examples of the US Government
response to the 2008 financial crisis and the excessive speculation that led to the 1929 stock market
crash. These examples will illustrate a time when the US economy benefitted due to a floating
exchange rate and a time when the US economy suffered due to a floating exchange rate. I will then
provide a similar analysis for the fixed exchange rate using the same example of the dangers of
speculation regarding the 1929 financial crash and the emerging market crisis of Argentina in 2001. As
mentioned before, there is no universal solution to the monetary policy governing exchange rates. A
general rule, however, is that floating exchange rates provide a country with more adaptability and
independence in fluctuating international economic circumstances. But they can lead to instability,
needlessly expansionary policy and excessive speculation. Fixed exchange rates, in contrast, are

Theme Of Brutality In The Book Thief
In The Book Thief, Markus Zusak uses his characters to demonstrate the theme that there is both
beauty and brutality in human nature. The characters that are examples of the novel are Rosa
Huberman, Hans Huberman and Max Vandenberg. Rosa exemplifies the theme through her language
and her tolerance. Hans exemplifies the theme through his interactions with Liesel. Max shows both
characteristics through the novel. Rosa, Hans and Max are prime example of how human nature can
have both beauty and brutality. Firstly, Rosa Huberman is an example of the beauty and brutality in
human nature through her beating Liesel, the language she use, and her tolerance of Max. Rosa beats

come back, but when Hans comes to where he was hiding out, Hans finds a note that Max left You ve
done enough (398). Another way that Max shows the beauty in human nature is when Max leaves a
gift for Liesel. It was a book called The Word Shaker . The book about Liesel and how the words she
uses matters. Max did not want Liesel to read Mein Kamp so he tore the book up and turned the book
into a quality book. Max shows the brutality in human nature when he says When death captures me,
he will feel my fist on his face. (189). Max s first response to death would be to punch him in the face.
Max Vandenberg exemplifies the theme because of the beauty he shows when he writes a book for

Kohn s Main Criticisms Of The Growth Mindset Theory
The growth mindset theory is the idea that by having grit, self determination and by believing you can
do well in school you will in return become more successful. This like many aspects in our culture
today has a large bias towards different political groups, that was something I found very interesting
because this system tends to be a conservative ideology. One of my initial thoughts I had while
reading this essay was the source it was coming from; Salon tends to be a more of a liberal news
source so the article may be biased towards the idea of Growth Mindset. Kohn s main idea of the
essay is that the Growth Mindset Theory, Kohn s main criticisms of the theory is that Students should

There are people at different ages shop every day, either online or in a store. People shop not only for
living essentials, but also for their needs in the society. Teens, too, shop for their reputation and shop
whenever they can. Drew Desilver, a senior writer at the Pew Research Center, stated that almost
eighty percent of American teens shop online, but almost eighty percent of the American teens prefer
to shop in stores (Desilver). There are many reasons why teenagers shop online even though they
prefer to shop in stores, but it is mainly due to the advance of technology in advertisements, time

Famous websites, such as Amazon and eBay help many teenagers to look for what they need within a
few seconds. Websites like google can help them to find items at a relatively lower cost, too. This
saves a lot of time because they do not need to compare different costs at different locations for
something they want to buy. This is especially critical for teens these years because they re more
cautious with their cash than in previous years (Smith 4). Although people may prefer to shop in
stores, they usually cannot find enough time to do so. It is particularly true for teens who do not have
driver licenses or other transportation methods and consequently have to go with an adult only when
the adults have free time. Furthermore, students can buy things in seconds in special online programs
such as Amazon s 1 Click Checkout and get it shipped before they need to use it for school. They do
not have to look for class material in the bookstore when it is crowded in the beginning of the school
year and have to wait for a long line. The last reason that teens tend to shop online instead of shopping
in stores even if they favor to do the second is because of their purchasing power. As suggested by
POPAI, while the tweens drive demand, parents are the real buyers (Smith 5). There are many things
that teens want, but since many teenagers do not have jobs, the most reasonable source of their

How Does Aristotle Explain Eudaimonia
What constitutes a good life ? Aristotle sought the answer to this question. Two books, Nicomachean
ethics and Eudemuan ethics, were dedicated to discovering what a good life is. He reached the
conclusion that when someone acts, they are always striving towards some final goal. So how did
Aristotle explain eudaimonia or perfect happiness? Eudaimonia is the ultimate good we strive
towards, that requires no further questioning. What he means by no further questioning is this.
Something that is the final good you want to acquire from your work. Aristotle looked over several
possible answers before coming to his conclusion. First there is honor. But, we see that honor is just

Compare And Contrast Odysseus And Robin Hood
Throughout history, no matter the number of times heroes change, the foundation of what makes a
hero stays the same. In order to stay relevant to the times, Modern heroes, such as Robin Hood, can
appear very different from classical heroes, like Odysseus, but they will always be very skillful with a
weapon yet suffer from hubris. Therefore, Homer s The Odyssey, the 13th century Rifson ballad, and
Pyle s The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood depict that Odysseus and Robin Hood are similar in the
skill of archery to outwit each of their respective enemies and hubris, a flaw which directly aligns with
glory.
Odysseus and Robin Hood are similar in many ways. For example, they are both skillful in archery.
When Odysseus finally reveals himself to the suitors, he proves his identity by effortlessly stringing
his bow. When he releases, the arrow shoots from the bow clean as a whistle through every socket of
the axes (Homer XXI. 481 482). The suitors are impressed with his ability to perfectly string the bow
and shoot it, a task many of them fail to complete. Odysseus disguise of the old man allows him to use

Emt Code Of Ethics Adopted By The National Association Of...
In accordance with the EMT Code of Ethics adopted by the National Association of Emergency
Medical Technicians, EMTs pledge to conserve life, alleviate suffering, promote health, do no harm,
and encourage the quality and equal availability of emergency medical care . Through the medical
education for an EMT license, a student learns how to appropriately treat and care for a medical or
traumatic emergency in order to be able to successfully follow this system. Students are also taught
the concepts on how to follow the moral and ethical components of the pledge. However, actually
being prepared to handle these kinds of dilemmas in real life scenarios is a challenge EMT face no
matter if they have been an EMS provider for months or years. These demanding situations usually
arise when there is a discrepancy between the EMT s personal moral values of right and wrong and the
ethical standards required professionally and socially. Major challenges include circumstances
involving resuscitation, triage, consent, and negligence. The three major life breathing concerns for a
patient is a disruption of the airway, breathing, and circulation. When a patient goes into cardiac arrest
due to pre existing conditions or trauma, an EMT will initiate the steps of cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) and hopefully using an available automated external defibrillator (AED).
However, some patients due to having a terminal illness, age, or personal choice does not want to be

1.7.1.1 Nail avulsion
Nail Avulsion is the surgical partial or full removal of the entire nail plate. This is performed under
local anesthesia. It is used in clinical studies prior to topical treatment of onychomycosis. (T Praveen

1.7.1.2 Nail abrasion
Nail abrasion, using sandpaper nail files is performed prior to antifungal nail lacquer treatment to

Cause Of Alzheimer s Neururodegenerative Disease
In the present day, there are quite several diseases that have yet to be treated and or prevented. One of
those is a neurodegenerative disease called Alzheimer s. Alzheimer s is defined by a depreciation of
memory and other cognitive functions that can lead to death with in 3 to 9 years after it is properly
diagnosed. The disease effects more than 35 million people in the world, 5.5 million are effected right
here in the United States. The main factor that is known to cause this disease that we know of right

The telomerase reverse transcriptase protein (TERT) has recently been exhibited to have a diversity of
functions. The TERT protein has been to be shown to be defensive with its interaction of the
mitochondria and has been hypothesized to possibly have a protective property in the human brain.
(Spilsbury, Miwa, et al. 2014) To further test this theory scientist proposed and experimented on the
possible functions of TERT. The study consisted of using 24 postmortem brains from consenting
donors and the used of living mice. The experiment was conducted to examine the different stages of
Alzheimer s disease pathology and the ability of the telomerase reverse transcriptase protein to protect
against damage of the neurological systems. The data accumulated from the testing of the human
brains and mice revealed that TERT when present in the subjects tested would begin to colonize with
the mitochondria and Alzheimer s disease subjects and would also cluster in areas under oxidative
tests. (Spilsbury, Miwa, et al. 2014) The experiments showed promising results on possibly using
telomerase proteins to treat and or prevent Alzheimer s disease, but further testing must be done in
order to truly conclude telomerases protective role against Alzheimer s.

Apathy Mantra Death; Apathy Empathy Healing William D. Tammeus, a journalist, once wrote that
You don t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry go round will
wave at his parents every time around and why his parents will always wave back. This quote
beautifully paints a picture of the natural love present between a parent and child. However,
sometimes this love becomes obscured and a disconnection occurs that prevents the parent from
empathy. The stories Two Kinds, and The Rocking Horse Winner show that a parent s lack of empathy
impacts the child s search for the self in the following phases: first, the search for the self is stunted ...

I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, and I tried each one on for size (Tan 405).
However as the time passes by, the mother s tests driven by a lack of empathy begins to suffocate and
stunt the search for the self within Jing mei. She recalls, And after seeing, once again, my mother s
disappointed face, something inside me began to die (Tan 406). As her search for the self is suffocated
to its threshold, Jing mei stands in front of the mirror. Here her search for the self is completely buried
and replaced with mantras, filled with lots of wont s. I won t let her change me... I won t be what I m
not (Tan 406).
In the second stage, the mantra intensifies and this can be observed in Paul as his mother continues to
deprive him of her empathy. While Paul s search for the self is deeply buried, his initial mantra does
get him the luck he is searching for. He wins five thousand pounds to secretly give to his mother. This
is an important and emotional gift to her because He was very anxious to see the effect of the birthday

could muster some emotion and empathy for his efforts. Instead, she leaves him still deprived. When
Paul watched her face as she read the letters... her face hardened and became more expressionless
(Lawrence 359). Asking for one last chance to see emotion capable of love and empathy on her

The Qing Dynasty had many challenges when ruling a majority Chinese based population. Although,
initially the Manchus had control of the army and they also followed along with the Chinese s

However, they had previous knowledge of other alien conquest dynasties to improve upon. For
example, the Manchu decided to have a full monopoly on the army by creating banner forces in all of
the major cities (Green). By doing this, they would have basically a military presence in every of the
major cities to help control the population. One exception of this policy was the Green Standard forces
but they were used mostly as a police force (Green). However, by the 19th century, this all started to
fall apart from the opium trade and the great rebellions. The opium trade severely affected the Banner

rebellions of the middle of the 19th century proved that the Manchu s control over the population was

Summary Of 1000 Splendid Suns By Khaled Hossieni
People in first world countries with privileges tend to overlook their good fortune and take everything

opportunities that would be given to them if one were to live in Canada, for example. Recently, media
had been continuously trying to stress this concept of privilege difference to the Public. Attempting to
amplify the amount of gratitude and thankfulness that people express for the good life they have been

Hossieni s most prevalent examples that prove this theory deal with woman being forced into
marriages, and how it can often lead to devastating consequences. The earliest example readers are
exposed to occurs after Rasheed looser his temper on Mariam. The author says this Mariam chewed.
Something at the back of her mouth cracked. Good Rasheed said Now you know what your rice tastes
like. Now you know what you ve given me in this marriage. Bad food and nothing else (Hossieni

irrational way. However, the deeper meaning behind this act was Rasheed s anger and disgust in
Mariam for failing to bear a male child, proving that there isn t a sense of respect of love for his wife.
If their marriage was built on the foundation of love, then this would not have been a problem.
However since she was forced in the marriage by her father, she is given no such comfort. Many

The Decrease of the Nuclear Family
Decrease in the amount of nuclear families
There are several possible reasons for the decrease in the number of nuclear families, particularly in
the past forty years. This includes rising cohabitation, higher divorce rates, secularisation, rising same
sex relationships, more career seekers and the rise in feminism.
Firstly, a nuclear family is a family consisting of a man and woman (usually married) in a sexual
relationship with one or more children. One reason for this type of family becoming less common is
due to the rising number of divorces. Getting divorced has become much easier than in the past. 40%
of all marriages end in divorce. There is much less stigma attached to divorce in modern society so
people are less afraid to do it, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rules such as no sex before marriage direct people onto the pathway of family and would increase the
number of nuclear families. Secularisation however means people are not following rules such as
these and therefore leading to a decrease in the number of nuclear families as more people did follow
these rules in the past.
Fourthly, over the last 40 years more same sex relationships are occurring due to change in legislation
and reduce in stigma. Same sex relationships in the past were highly frowned upon and even illegal.
Linking back to secularisation, stigma has decreased on the topic of homosexuality as most religions
state same sex relationships are not allowed. So in the past more people agreed with and followed
these rules however now people are much more accepting and open about same sex relationships. The
civil partnership act of 2004 meant that gay couples could have the same rights as married couples.
This lead to a large rise in the amount of same sex relationships and as this was increasing the amount
of nuclear families started decreasing as a nuclear family cannot consist of two people of the same
sex.
Fifthly, the rise in career seeking people has risen. People who are dedicated to their work often do not
have time to sustain a relationship and settle down and have a family. This means there are less first
marriages today as the facts show. In England and wales 143,000 first marriages occurred in 2007.
This is significantly

In The Long Run The Oppressor
In his novel, A People s History of the United States: 1492 Present, Howard Zinn offers readers a new
and unexpected take on American history. First published in 1980, A People s History is often received
with much controversy and criticism, as Zinn does something that historians rarely do: he openly
rejects the narrative of American history as told by a European perspective. The first chapter of the
novel mainly serves to illustrate two of Zinn s most fundamental ideas: one, that he, as a historian,
chooses to write from the lesser known perspective of groups whose voices have been suppressed; and
two, that it is necessary for people to ask themselves to what extent is it right to justify atrocities in the
name of human progress. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zinn does not fully explain what he means when he states this; instead, he leaves it open ended for one
to interpret as they may choose. It is possible, however, to infer that the meaning of the oppressor is
also a victim is a lesson that Zinn wishes to communicate: when a society decides that oppression and
control are the elements that define power and human progress, it unknowingly becomes victim to the
repetition of history that it refuses to learn from (page 10). Far too often, we, as a society, learn what
Zinn calls a sense of moral proportion, in which we downplay atrocities and emphasize the importance
of human progress, which not only serves to justify what has been done, but also blinds us to the fact
that history has and will repeat itself again (page 9). We accept genocides and other forms of violence,
as seen with the Native Americans, and bury them within a mass of other facts in order to rationalize
that such events were necessary for the human race to progress. The very fact that Zinn s novel
sparked such controversy when it was first published clearly demonstrates that, to at least some extent,
people were averse to being exposed to a perspective on history that does not glorify the Europeans
and reveals extreme cruelty and brutality on both sides. We need not condemn the Europeans for their
actions, as it is far too late

Lennie s Childishness
During the 1930s in America, many experienced years of harsh depression, where food and work were
scarce. Many struggled to survive during this difficult period, and as a result were forced to travel to
seek any work they could. The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck focuses on two itinerant
men named George and Lennie, who struggled under the difficulty of these times. They find work at a
ranch to fund their dream of owning their own ranch and being independent. However, it is due to
Lennie, who, as Steinbeck effectively conveys throughout the novel, is a physically intimidating but
mentally childish man, that their American dream is shattered, as a result of his love for petting soft
things and his, unbeknown to him, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among the most prominent of Lennie s sympathetic attributes is undoubtedly his frightened nature.
This characteristic is conveyed consistently throughout the novel even when Lennie loses his temper it
is due to fear. His timidity is often due to being scared of displeasing George, who acts as Lennie s
father figure: Lennie looked timidly over to him. George? Here, Lennie appears to be asking for
permission from George to ask a question, for fear that George will be angry. This demonstrates
Lennie s timidity and lack of confidence, as well as his childishness and dependence on George. One
significant incident which is used to establish this characteristic is when Curley attacks Lennie in the
bunkhouse. Lennie is terrified, and the novel states that he covered his face with his huge paws and
bleated with terror . Here, the author uses metaphor to compare Lennie to an animal. He describes
Lennie s hands as paws, and the noise he is making as bleating. This reinforces the irony that Lennie is
so physically powerful but so mentally weak, as, despite being strong, with paws like such of a bear,
he is making a noise like that of a lamb. By characterising Lennie in this way, the author presents him
as an fearful and innocent character, making the reader feel sympathy for him. Another way that
Steinbeck creates sympathy for the character of Lennie is by portraying him as childlike, with George
taking the role of his father figure. For example,

The Battle Of Gettysburg At Gettysburg
Over the last 153 years Gettysburg, has moved from honoring those who fought and died during the
battle at Gettysburg to preserve the battlefield. Gettysburg went through two phases of change. The
first phase happened between 1863 1938 and the second phase happened in 1938 when the War
Department transferred the administration of Gettysburg to the National Park Service. During the first
phase the National Cemetery was built in Gettysburg for the creation of a proper burial of their now
dead sons, brothers, and husbands. David Wills, a local attorney, purchased twelve acres on behalf of
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons,
brothers, or husbands. Wills selected the high ground of Cemetery Hill, a key piece of terrain that had
figured prominently as part of the union battle line. After the National Cemetery was built a veteran of
the Union Army and now New York Representative Daniel E. Sickles introduced a bill to congress. On
December 06, 1984 Daniel Sickles, introduced H.R. 8096 with little debate on February 11, 1895
Congress approved an act to establish a National Military Park at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Popularly
called the Sickles Bill, this legislation established the federal park boundary at 3,331.5 acres. The

for long hours and received miniscule wages, whereas the bourgeoisie grew abundantly wealthy
through the labor of the working class. Published in 1848 and 1854 respectively, Karl Marx s The
Communist Manifesto and Charles Dickens Hard Times both comment on these troubles. While Hard
Times is a novel which tells a story and The Communist Manifesto is a short publication which tries to
bring about social change, both writings offer a sharp critique of the class antagonism brought about
by capitalism at the height of the Industrial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, like many members of the bourgeoisie, Bounderby tries to better himself at the expense
of the proletarians. While Bounderby was a member of the lower class in his youth, he has completely
turned his back on them. He treats the proletarians with contempt, and he believes that all the
proletarians desire to be fed on turtle soup and venison, with a gold spoon. Dickens is creating an
irony here. Bounderby believes that all the proletarians want to get rich without working, yet the
proletarians are actually doing all the excruciating work in the society. However, the wealth is not
going to the proletarians but to Bounderby himself. In contrast, the protagonist of the novel is Stephen
Blackpool, who represents the average proletarian. He is not very educated, he works long hours at a
difficult factory job, and he gets paid very little for this job. Blackpool is a tragic character who is
constantly being taken advantage of by members of higher classes. Bounderby takes advantage of
Blackpool through wage labor, and Tom Gradgrind takes advantage of him by framing him for the
bank robbery. This all leads to a life full of sufferings, including exile from Coketown and an untimely
death. Blackpool would be a perfect model for Marx in order to showcase the sufferings of the
proletarians in Victorian England. Bounderby had complete control over Blackpool. Bounderby could

There are more consequences for mistreating someone. Mistreating someone would also affect others

Greece no longer had one king, so they focused on building temples for their gods. Architecture began small and plain but evolved into impressive pieces of art. As time passed from the Archaic period to the Hellenistic period, the people of Greece developed a type of formula for their buildings and their pieces of art. In Ancient Greece, religion dominated their life, so it is understandable that their architecture would be dominated by their religion. Before Greece became many different city states, they had kings, and they would build a room called a megaron to show they King s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They didn t want a column in the middle because than you would have to walk around the column to get into the temple. The most common temples would be called hexastyle because it would have six columns in the front. If there was four columns across then it would be called tetrastyle or eight across would be called octastyle. Another way to classify a temple is how the columns are distributed. When a temple only has a row of columns on the front and has end walls, it is called in antis. If the temple has a row of columns on the front with no end walls, it is called prostyle. If a temple has a front and back portico with columns, it is called amphiprostyle. The most famous Greek temples would be considered to be peripteral, meaning that it has columns all the way around the building. The Greeks had a certain formula on how many columns would go on each side of a peripertal temple. They would take the number of columns in the front portico and multiply it by two and add one. If your temple was hexastyle and peripertal, than there would be thirteen columns on each side ( 6+6+1= 13). The Greeks had developed a type of formula when it came to the construction of a temple. There is not a major difference in architecture between the Archaic period and the Classical period. During the Archaic period they began to use stone instead of wood. • 3. How Did The Us Convert To The Metric System When the United States separated from Britain they kept the original Imperial measurement system despite disregarding the previous government. Ever since America has used inches, feet, and yards as standard measurement. However, while the U.S. continued to use the imperial system other countries progressed. In 1799, after the french revolution, France converted to the metric system. Invented by Gabriel Monton in France 1670, the metric system uses common powers of ten to measure weight and lengths so that it could be conveniently used with decimals. Soon the metric system had spread from France to Britain and most of the world. By converting to the metric system our trade would increase because there would no longer be a need to change between systems and other countries could view the modification as making amends. It could also save millions of dollars for the U.S. because large companies like NASA would all be on the same page using the metric system. Smaller mistakes could also be prevented by swapping to the much simpler metric system. One last thing the change would impact is education. If kids no longer had to learn two measurement systems they would have more time to learn other material. • 6. Physics of Catapults Essay The ballista, or shield piercer, was first developed by the Greeks using the same principles as a bow and arrow. Its primary use was to, as the name suggests, pierce enemy shields, since normal bows lacked the power to do so. Early versions of the ballista include the gastrophetes, which is nothing more than an enlarged bow that can be braced against the users body. http://members.lycos.nl/onager/GastrophetesPic.jpg As time went on ballistas were improved to become larger and more powerful, eventually becoming mounted mechanisms that could be operated by two or more people. Using this relationship assumes that the force constant is constant, or that moving the arms back 2 meters gives twice the force that moving them back 1 meter would do, which is most likely not correct, but close enough for a general assumption of the force to be made. When the force is applied, the projectile is accelerated to the end of the ballista, at which point it released with a velocity v and an angle q from the horizontal. The velocity can be found using the kinematic equation v2=2ax, where a is the acceleration and x is the length of the ballista that the projectile is accelerated upon. Since F=ma and F in this case is kd, the equation can be simplified into v2=2 kdx/m. After it is released, the projectile obeys the laws of projectile motion, disregarding air resistance. Therefore, the range of the ballista can be given by the equation R=v2sin2q/g, where g is the accleration due to gravity. Mangonel History The Romans, finding the ballista difficult to construct, simplified the design and created the onager. It had one arm instead of two, and is what is most commonly identified as a catapult today. http://members.lycos.nl/onager/OnagerPic.jpg During the Dark Ages, the French were able to re invent the onager, and they called it the mangonneau, and it became known in England as the mangonel. Turner cross cultural conflicts are differences in cultural values and beliefs that place people at odds with one another . Generally cultural conflicts have been used to describe crime and violence but that is a pretty narrow definition. • 10. Jefferson Davis An Analysis of Jefferson Davis By: Blayden McLeod History 131 2101 John D. Sulentic September 3 Thesis Statement: Jefferson Davis was a very incompetent President and showed it by his policies and lack of action during the Civil War Jefferson Davis was born June 3rd, 1808 on a small farm in southwestern Kentucky from his parents Samuel Davis and Jane Cook Davis. After spending most of his childhood life in the southern frontier of Mississippi, he decided to receive a quality education, mainly because of his brilliance and strong intelligence. He attended many schools before he went on to complete a four year term at West Point Military Academy which later appointed him a Second Lieutenant in 1828. Davis was then commissioned to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the first major issues President Davis had to deal with was the decision to bombard Fort Sumter. President Lincoln had basically notified the South Carolina Governor that he was sending a ship with provisions to Fort Sumter, which is off the coast of Charleston, but actually the ship was armed with troops. Confederate intelligence had intercepted this knowledge beforehand and they had six men of war ships outside to intercept the ship. General Beauregard of the Confederate army was given direct order from President Davis to demand immediate evacuation of Sumter and to use force if there was no compliance. The Union Major Anderson ignored the commands and on April 12, 1861, the Civil War had officially begun when Confederate troops bombarded Sumter. Anderson shortly surrendered and sent the message to the North that is was no longer time for diplomatic solutions. Davis felt Lincoln had maneuvered the south into firing the first shot and Davis said The assault was made by sending a hostile fleet. Davis was forced to take active measures for defense when Lincoln declared war on the South on April 15th and gathered many grateful volunteers who were glad to fight for there cause. Later, and against Davis will, Richmond was voted the capitol of the Confederacy. Despite Davis uncanny knack for being stubborn, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Importantly, legislation and the workforce have misguided the appropriate treatment of disabled people throughout history. The poor treatment that has been represented could be in part of the lack of understanding of what the definition of disability truly is. Over time, this comprehension of disability has changed as citizenship was challenged countless times on the basis of disability (Baynton 33). • 12. Evaluating The Merits And Demerits Of Fixed And Floating... Evaluate the merits and demerits of fixed and floating exchange rate regimes. Provide examples to support your arguments. I. Intro Floating exchange rates and fixed exchange rates each provide distinct advantages and disadvantages for a given regime. In any given state of the global economy, one given country may be better suited for one system. But there are a number of factors that influence this, and there is therefore no universal correct system for all international economies. I will discuss the merits and demerits of a floating exchange rate, providing the examples of the US Government response to the 2008 financial crisis and the excessive speculation that led to the 1929 stock market crash. These examples will illustrate a time when the US economy benefitted due to a floating exchange rate and a time when the US economy suffered due to a floating exchange rate. I will then provide a similar analysis for the fixed exchange rate using the same example of the dangers of speculation regarding the 1929 financial crash and the emerging market crisis of Argentina in 2001. As mentioned before, there is no universal solution to the monetary policy governing exchange rates. A general rule, however, is that floating exchange rates provide a country with more adaptability and independence in fluctuating international economic circumstances. But they can lead to instability, needlessly expansionary policy and excessive speculation. Fixed exchange rates, in contrast, are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The characters that are examples of the novel are Rosa Huberman, Hans Huberman and Max Vandenberg. Rosa exemplifies the theme through her language and her tolerance. Hans exemplifies the theme through his interactions with Liesel. Max shows both characteristics through the novel. Rosa, Hans and Max are prime example of how human nature can have both beauty and brutality. Firstly, Rosa Huberman is an example of the beauty and brutality in human nature through her beating Liesel, the language she use, and her tolerance of Max. Famous websites, such as Amazon and eBay help many teenagers to look for what they need within a few seconds. Websites like google can help them to find items at a relatively lower cost, too. This saves a lot of time because they do not need to compare different costs at different locations for something they want to buy. This is especially critical for teens these years because they re more cautious with their cash than in previous years (Smith 4). Although people may prefer to shop in stores, they usually cannot find enough time to do so. It is particularly true for teens who do not have driver licenses or other transportation methods and consequently have to go with an adult only when the adults have free time. Furthermore, students can buy things in seconds in special online programs such as Amazon s 1 Click Checkout and get it shipped before they need to use it for school. They do not have to look for class material in the bookstore when it is crowded in the beginning of the school year and have to wait for a long line. • 20. Compare And Contrast Odysseus And Robin Hood Throughout history, no matter the number of times heroes change, the foundation of what makes a hero stays the same. In order to stay relevant to the times, Modern heroes, such as Robin Hood, can appear very different from classical heroes, like Odysseus, but they will always be very skillful with a weapon yet suffer from hubris. Therefore, Homer s The Odyssey, the 13th century Rifson ballad, and Pyle s The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood depict that Odysseus and Robin Hood are similar in the skill of archery to outwit each of their respective enemies and hubris, a flaw which directly aligns with glory. Odysseus and Robin Hood are similar in many ways. For example, they are both skillful in archery. When Odysseus finally reveals himself to the suitors, he proves his identity by effortlessly stringing his bow. When he releases, the arrow shoots from the bow clean as a whistle through every socket of the axes (Homer XXI. 481 482). The suitors are impressed with his ability to perfectly string the bow and shoot it, a task many of them fail to complete. Odysseus disguise of the old man allows him to use the element of surprise, dumbfounding the suitors, with his ability to shoot the great bow. Odysseus then slaughters the suitors who have been drinking all his wine, eating his food, and pursuing his wife. Similarly, Robin Hood uses his advanced skills in archery to win the hand of the princess and beat his enemy, the sheriff. When the sheriff holds an archery match in order ... The great rebellions of the middle of the 19th century proved that the Manchu s control over the population was weakening greatly; and because of this, the Manchu had to provide sweeping military reforms to allow Han Chinese a portion of the Manchu military monopoly (Green). The opium trade really affected the allowance of the Manchu military monopoly and essentially, helped give the Han Chinese the ability to raise an army and keep that army. • 29. Summary Of 1000 Splendid Suns By Khaled Hossieni People in first world countries with privileges tend to overlook their good fortune and take everything for granted. Women in third world countries such as Afghanistan can only dream of the privileges and opportunities that would be given to them if one were to live in Canada, for example. Recently, media had been continuously trying to stress this concept of privilege difference to the Public. Attempting to amplify the amount of gratitude and thankfulness that people express for the good life they have been given. The novel 1000 splendid suns by Khaled Hossieni is a wonderful written example of this, as it explores the lives of two Afghan woman and their everyday struggle with oppressing forces in every aspect of their lives. Visual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hossieni s most prevalent examples that prove this theory deal with woman being forced into marriages, and how it can often lead to devastating consequences. The earliest example readers are exposed to occurs after Rasheed looser his temper on Mariam. The author says this Mariam chewed. Something at the back of her mouth cracked. Good Rasheed said Now you know what your rice tastes like. Now you know what you ve given me in this marriage. Bad food and nothing else (Hossieni 104). After Mariam fails to cook a meal within her husband s standards it causes him to react in an irrational way. However, the deeper meaning behind this act was Rasheed s anger and disgust in Mariam for failing to bear a male child, proving that there isn t a sense of respect of love for his wife. If their marriage was built on the foundation of love, then this would not have been a problem. However since she was forced in the marriage by her father, she is given no such comfort. Many people will read this passage and think that Hossieni is just over exaggerating to entice his audience to read more, however reality is, chewing rocks doesn t even amount to the real pain felt by woman all over Afghanistan. • 30. The Decrease of the Nuclear Family Decrease in the amount of nuclear families There are several possible reasons for the decrease in the number of nuclear families, particularly in the past forty years. This includes rising cohabitation, higher divorce rates, secularisation, rising same sex relationships, more career seekers and the rise in feminism. Firstly, a nuclear family is a family consisting of a man and woman (usually married) in a sexual relationship with one or more children. One reason for this type of family becoming less common is due to the rising number of divorces. Getting divorced has become much easier than in the past. 40% of all marriages end in divorce. There is much less stigma attached to divorce in modern society so people are less afraid to do it, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rules such as no sex before marriage direct people onto the pathway of family and would increase the number of nuclear families. Secularisation however means people are not following rules such as these and therefore leading to a decrease in the number of nuclear families as more people did follow these rules in the past. Fourthly, over the last 40 years more same sex relationships are occurring due to change in legislation and reduce in stigma. Same sex relationships in the past were highly frowned upon and even illegal. Linking back to secularisation, stigma has decreased on the topic of homosexuality as most religions state same sex relationships are not allowed. So in the past more people agreed with and followed these rules however now people are much more accepting and open about same sex relationships. The civil partnership act of 2004 meant that gay couples could have the same rights as married couples. This lead to a large rise in the amount of same sex relationships and as this was increasing the amount of nuclear families started decreasing as a nuclear family cannot consist of two people of the same sex. Fifthly, the rise in career seeking people has risen. People who are dedicated to their work often do not have time to sustain a relationship and settle down and have a family. This means there are less first marriages today as the facts show. In England and wales 143,000 first marriages occurred in 2007. This is significantly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. In The Long Run The Oppressor In his novel, A People s History of the United States: 1492 Present, Howard Zinn offers readers a new and unexpected take on American history. First published in 1980, A People s History is often received with much controversy and criticism, as Zinn does something that historians rarely do: he openly rejects the narrative of American history as told by a European perspective. The first chapter of the novel mainly serves to illustrate two of Zinn s most fundamental ideas: one, that he, as a historian, chooses to write from the lesser known perspective of groups whose voices have been suppressed; and two, that it is necessary for people to ask themselves to what extent is it right to justify atrocities in the name of human progress. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zinn does not fully explain what he means when he states this; instead, he leaves it open ended for one to interpret as they may choose. It is possible, however, to infer that the meaning of the oppressor is also a victim is a lesson that Zinn wishes to communicate: when a society decides that oppression and control are the elements that define power and human progress, it unknowingly becomes victim to the repetition of history that it refuses to learn from (page 10). Far too often, we, as a society, learn what Zinn calls a sense of moral proportion, in which we downplay atrocities and emphasize the importance of human progress, which not only serves to justify what has been done, but also blinds us to the fact that history has and will repeat itself again (page 9). We accept genocides and other forms of violence, as seen with the Native Americans, and bury them within a mass of other facts in order to rationalize that such events were necessary for the human race to progress. The very fact that Zinn s novel sparked such controversy when it was first published clearly demonstrates that, to at least some extent, people were averse to being exposed to a perspective on history that does not glorify the Europeans and reveals extreme cruelty and brutality on both sides. We need not condemn the Europeans for their actions, as it is far too late ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Lennie s Childishness During the 1930s in America, many experienced years of harsh depression, where food and work were scarce. Many struggled to survive during this difficult period, and as a result were forced to travel to seek any work they could. The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck focuses on two itinerant men named George and Lennie, who struggled under the difficulty of these times. They find work at a ranch to fund their dream of owning their own ranch and being independent. However, it is due to Lennie, who, as Steinbeck effectively conveys throughout the novel, is a physically intimidating but mentally childish man, that their American dream is shattered, as a result of his love for petting soft things and his, unbeknown to him, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Among the most prominent of Lennie s sympathetic attributes is undoubtedly his frightened nature. This characteristic is conveyed consistently throughout the novel even when Lennie loses his temper it is due to fear. His timidity is often due to being scared of displeasing George, who acts as Lennie s father figure: Lennie looked timidly over to him. George? Here, Lennie appears to be asking for permission from George to ask a question, for fear that George will be angry. This demonstrates Lennie s timidity and lack of confidence, as well as his childishness and dependence on George. One significant incident which is used to establish this characteristic is when Curley attacks Lennie in the bunkhouse. Lennie is terrified, and the novel states that he covered his face with his huge paws and bleated with terror . Here, the author uses metaphor to compare Lennie to an animal. He describes Lennie s hands as paws, and the noise he is making as bleating. This reinforces the irony that Lennie is so physically powerful but so mentally weak, as, despite being strong, with paws like such of a bear, he is making a noise like that of a lamb. By characterising Lennie in this way, the author presents him as an fearful and innocent character, making the reader feel sympathy for him. Another way that Steinbeck creates sympathy for the character of Lennie is by portraying him as childlike, with George taking the role of his father figure. For example, ... • 35. The Battle Of Gettysburg At Gettysburg Over the last 153 years Gettysburg, has moved from honoring those who fought and died during the battle at Gettysburg to preserve the battlefield. Gettysburg went through two phases of change. The first phase happened between 1863 1938 and the second phase happened in 1938 when the War Department transferred the administration of Gettysburg to the National Park Service. During the first phase the National Cemetery was built in Gettysburg for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons, brothers, and husbands. David Wills, a local attorney, purchased twelve acres on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons, brothers, or husbands. Wills selected the high ground of Cemetery Hill, a key piece of terrain that had figured prominently as part of the union battle line. After the National Cemetery was built a veteran of the Union Army and now New York Representative Daniel E. Sickles introduced a bill to congress. On December 06, 1984 Daniel Sickles, introduced H.R. 8096 with little debate on February 11, 1895 Congress approved an act to establish a National Military Park at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Popularly called the Sickles Bill, this legislation established the federal park boundary at 3,331.5 acres. • 38. Comparison Between Hard Times and Communist Manifesto Throughout history, a divide has always existed between the rich and poor in society. However, during the Industrial Revolution in Victorian England, this rift reached its peak. The working class labored for long hours and received miniscule wages, whereas the bourgeoisie grew abundantly wealthy through the labor of the working class. Published in 1848 and 1854 respectively, Karl Marx s The Communist Manifesto and Charles Dickens Hard Times both comment on these troubles. While Hard Times is a novel which tells a story and The Communist Manifesto is a short publication which tries to bring about social change, both writings offer a sharp critique of the class antagonism brought about by capitalism at the height of the Industrial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, like many members of the bourgeoisie, Bounderby tries to better himself at the expense of the proletarians. While Bounderby was a member of the lower class in his youth, he has completely turned his back on them. He treats the proletarians with contempt, and he believes that all the proletarians desire to be fed on turtle soup and venison, with a gold spoon. Dickens is creating an irony here. Bounderby believes that all the proletarians want to get rich without working, yet the proletarians are actually doing all the excruciating work in the society. However, the wealth is not going to the proletarians but to Bounderby himself. In contrast, the protagonist of the novel is Stephen Blackpool, who represents the average proletarian. He is not very educated, he works long hours at a difficult factory job, and he gets paid very little for this job. Blackpool is a tragic character who is constantly being taken advantage of by members of higher classes. Bounderby takes advantage of Blackpool through wage labor, and Tom Gradgrind takes advantage of him by framing him for the bank robbery. This all leads to a life full of sufferings, including exile from Coketown and an untimely death.
