Louis Silvie Zamperini
Louis Silvie Zamperini was born to Italian immigrant parents on January 26, 1917, in the town of
Olean, New York. Growing up in Torrance, California, Zamperini ran track at Torrance High School
and discovered that he had a competitive streak a mile wide when it came to long distance running. In
1934, Zamperini set the national high school mile record, and his time of 4 minutes and 21.2 seconds
would stand for an incredible 20 years. His track prowess also caught the attention of the University of
Southern California, and he earned a scholarship to attend. It wasn t long before Zamperini was taking
his love of track to the next level, and in 1936 he headed to New York City for the 5,000 meter
Olympic trials. Held on Randall s Island, the race ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All but one of the three men survived those 47 days at sea. They had to survive on rain water and birds
that would land on the raft for food and something to drink. The two men were burnet to a crisp and
had sun blisters all over there body. After the forty seven days on the raft made them week.
In captivity across a series of prison camps, Zamperini and Phillips were separated and subjected to
torture, both physical and psychological. They were beaten and starved, and Zamperini was singled
out and abused repeatedly by a camp sergeant called the Bird, who would tear into fits of psychotic
violence. Yet Zamperini, as a former Olympic athlete, was seen as a propaganda tool by the Japanese,
a scenario that likely saved him from execution.
For months Zamperini lived in daily fear of the man he came to regard as an inhuman monster. But
late in 1944 Watanabe was posted to another camp. In March 1945, with American B 29 bombers
raining incendiaries over Tokyo, Zamperini and a group of fellow prisoners were moved to a camp
known as 4B at Naoetsu, an industrial village on Japan s west coast. On arrival Zamperini was
dismayed to find that Watanabe, too, had been transferred to the same camp. It was, Zamperini told his
biographer Laura Hillenbrand, the darkest moment of his

The Toursim Industry in South Africa
The tourism industry is a vast growing trade that in recent years has seen a significant increase in its
contribution to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of various respective countries. South Africa is one
of the countries that have witnessed tremendous growth in its tourism industry. As much as such
development is a very welcomed phenomenon for any country, growth and development is limited by
a number of constraints. Of importance to this particular study is the issue of seasonality in the
tourism industry.
Seasonality is defined as the fluctuation of situations that has a direct effect on one or more variables.
(McCarthy 1994:275).According to an article by strathprints journals (www.stathprints/journals, 25
April) seasonality in tourism has traditionally been regarded as a major problem which needs to be
overcome, but relatively little research has been conducted on the patterns or causes of this
phenomenon.
The question this study aims to unfold is:
What effect does the seasonal nature of the tourism industry have on the providers of components of
the tourism industry, as well as on unemployment in Mbombela?
The aims and objectives of the study are:
To investigate the negative effects seasonality has on the tourism industry in Mbombela.
To highlight the differences in the rates of employment associated with different points within the
seasonal cycle.
To highlight the internal changes enforced by service providers in the tourism industry as a result of

Brandix I4 Case Study
With the formation of Brandix i3 since 2012, the Brandix group had to face a drastic change in the
entire company. This situation is based on the theoretical field of change management. Change
management is a process of transitioning individuals, groups of organizations to the expected future
state. The main objective of change management is to ensure change s record, evaluation,
authorization, prioritization, planning, testing, implementation and reviewing in a control manner. It is
considered that major change is never successful unless the complacency level is low. However,
change is a common thread that runs through all organizations regardless of size of the organization,
industry or history. The key part of managing change depends on how far the people within it
understand the process of change. Change is a constant feature of organizational life and the ability to
manage it is seen as a core competence of successful organizations.
According to the situation analyzed in the report, there are two theories which can be selected to

Blockbuster Essay
Criticisms of Blockbuster by Seidler
1. The bulk of 1988 per share earnings were due to
a) Very slow goodwill amortization
b) Stretched out life for hit tapes
c) Nonrecurring items of initial franchise fees, area development fees and sales to new franchises.
2. Steeper growth curve resulting from acquisitions that were treated as pooling
3. Inflation of sales in the fourth quarter. Revenues are recognized when products are shipped with no
indication that the stores purchasing were actually open for business.
4. Running out of cash
Our position
1. On the EPS related issues
a) Regarding the goodwill amortization issue, we suggest a position that is in between the current BV
practice (40 years) and Bear s recommendation (5 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We do not agree with BV s practice of recognizing the revenue upon shipping the supplies because
without acceptance of supplies by stores, it does not satisfy the requirement of completing all
activities that lead to completion of the critical event.
4. We agree that BV ran out of cash. The net working capital was $10384M and Accounts Payable
tripled. We also agree with the double counting and mismatch in financial statements.
A3
Part 1 Concerns that have been addressed
1 b. The hit tapes are now being amortized over a much shorter period – The costs of non base stock
videocassettes (generally greater than four copies per title for each store i.e. hits ) are amortized on an
accelerated basis over three months to an estimated $4 salvage value.
2. Acquisitions treated as pooling – All acquisitions were accounted for under the purchase method
and accordingly the operating results of the acquired businesses are included in the consolidated
results of operations of the company since their respective date of acquisition.
3. Critical event for sale of supplies to stores – BV is using a rental library approach for supplies for
the new stores. Revenue sharing allows BV to purchase videocassettes at a lower product cost than
traditional buying arrangements.
Part 2 Concerns that remain
1 a. The goodwill continues to be amortized over a period of 40 years.

Not only did he knowingly commit these treasonous acts, he then went on to knowlingly lie about
them. First, he denied the operations existance, then he denied the truth of the matter. This is similar to
Nixon s involvement with the watergate scandal (except Nixon didn t order the covert actions, only
covered them up). Nixon was in the process of impeachment and conviction when he resigned as
president and was later pardoned. Reagan is in a very similar situation to this, except he took the extra
step further and actually aided in the premeditation and execution of the actions.(4)
The Treasonous Actions of Reagan
The actions that Reagan took are treasonous because he, The President of the United States,
knowingly approved and supported a foreign policy that A) Violated US law B) Violated an arms
embargo against an enemy of America C) assissted terrorists that were taking US citizens as hostages.
These are all acts that knowlingly gave aid to enemies of the United States, and therefore are acts of

My Mom Hated Me Essay
Growing up I was an abused child who wanted nothing more than to break free of the horrible torture
that was imposed on me every day of my childhood. My mother hated me, and she was not shy in
saying so. She would belittle me as if it gave her some kind of sick pleasure in destroying my fragile,
developing ego. Naturally, I would grow up to be a person who didn t have any ambition or goals for
the future. This was because I focused all of my energy on the thought of getting away. I just wanted
to be free, somewhere, anywhere; it didn t matter to me.
I am not sure exactly when my mother decided that she hated me, but it was definitely apparent in all
of her actions. She would blame me for anything that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many days I would sweep up the chunks of pulled out hair that left tiny little bald marks all over my
aching head.
When I would escape I would go to my best friend s house. Her mother Denise despised my mother
and always said that if she could adopt me that she would do it in a New York minute. I loved to be
there because I felt safe. My mom hated Denise and would insult the family and call them
unspeakable obscenities. She knew that I would have rather been with my best friend s family than
with her, and she would accuse me of not having a loyal bone in my body. I did though; I was loyal to
what I thought was right and true, and it definitely wasn t beating an innocent child because I hated
my own life.
I didn t care what she thought; in my eyes she was the monster; she was the one who couldn t accept
the blame for anything. She was the one that would never apologize no matter how much pain she had
put me through.
It was obvious to me that my mother had a serious problem. The drugs that she would take just to get
through the day and the abusive childhood had played a role in the person that she had become. Her
father had started the cycle of abuse and my mother let it continue turning her into the weak
domineering, selfish evil mother that I never wanted or deserved.
I always blamed myself for her behavior, partly because every time that she would punch me, I always
told myself that I would never forgive her. I

Arnold As The Devil-Figure In Joyce Carols Oates
In Joyce Carols Oates where are you going and where have you been Arnold is a devil figure. The
central point the idea that Arnold is the devil. Although supporting evidence is too extensive to
summarize here, her interpretation has become the majority position in essays about Oates s story
numerous other writers have called Arnold a literal or symbolic devil, or at least have called him
satanic or demonic. Even Oates herself has called Arnold a demon and describes the story as an
allegory of the fatal attractions of death (or the devil) . So in Oates s short story a teenaged
protagonist, when freed from the repressive control of parents or a parental figure, encounters a
stranger who acts like a friend but who is actually a literal or symbolic devil, in addition to being the
protagonist s alter ego, the protagonist s adolescent id freed from the parental superego and finally

He doesn t represent anything, except the kind of creep a girl like Connie (or even a girl unlike
Connie) might have the bad luck to attract. The story even implies that Arnold has killed, or at least
raped, before the numbers 33, 19, 17 painted on the car may be a secret code as the miscreant himself
boasts, but they are not demonic numerology. The numbers most likely are the ages of Arnold Friend s
previous victims, suggested to Oates by the ages seventeen, fifteen, and thirteen of the girls killed by
Charles Schmidt. Assuming that Friend has listed his victims in chronological order, the number
sequence is revealing. He started with a woman near his own age, dropped down to the Last teen year,
then picked a girl two years younger than the previous one, which parallels Schmidt s youth fetish.
Connie fits perfectly into the descending two year age difference of nineteen, seventeen, and now

The Debate On Banning Religious Symbols
The debate on banning religious symbols in Quebec, and Quebec wanting to be their own country has
been an issue for quite some time. The province we formally known as Quebec established a shield
against themselves to advocate that they would like things to go their own way. It is said that they
would like to form a place where religion is neutral (Hughes, 2013). Time after time, we get new
reports on Quebec being disturbed at the sight of all the different symbols in their province; they aren t
too fond of multiculturalism. We know all of Canada to be a place where everyone can be comfortable
in their own skin. Our country is a place of diversity and has not changed until a province like Quebec
wants to turn away from our multiculturalism and change the Charter of Rights to please themselves,
but why?
The question is if religious symbols take an impact on society in a positive or negative way? Quebec
might say that since multiculturalism became a part of our country that it has destroyed the tradition of
what Canada used to be; which is formerly wrong. Quebec does not believe that people that work in
the public sector such as: Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs and are targeted because of their religion; but still
will allow those to who are Catholic/Christians to keep their own symbols (Hughes, 2013). It is stated
that if daycare workers where their religious symbols like headscarves to their school then it would
influence the children to want to follow their religion (Marwah,

Compare And Contrast Political Parties
There have been many losses and victories in creating the government and political parties the United
States relies on today. The two major parties have defiantly changed their original platforms as time
has gone on, but they have each gained voters for their beliefs. Though the parties have changed over
the years, they have also each had recurrent patterns in history. The Democratic and Republican
parties are the two major parties in the United States, and they have many intricate ways of how they
came to be what they are today. In 1492, political government first began when Christopher Columbus
discovered the America s. The Europeans were the first to have control of the land and ran it on their
beliefs. In A Very Short Introduction, Paul S. Boyer says, English colonists were self governed and ran
their land on Christian belief . The colonists also believed that social status was determined by the
wealth, gender, and race of a person. Rich white men had all of the power, and women were only used
for domestic duties. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the Democratic and Republican parties first began, their platforms were not quite the same as
they are today. In fact, they did not even exist until 1791, when George Washington was president.
They began as one single party, know as the Democratic Republican Party founded by James Madison
and Thomas Jefferson. The Democratic Republican Party believed in a loose, decentralized,
democratic government. It was created to stand up against the Federalists party who supported and
pushed through the ratification of the United States Constitution. The Democratic Republican party
came into power because the people of the United States could not thrive if the government was too
powerful and had control over everything. Later on in 1824, the Democrat Republican party split into
the Republican and Democratic Party, after the election of John Quincy

The Case of Malcolm Farley
The case of Malcolm Fairley is a unique case in which paint analysis and the use of forensic science
made investigators succeed in apprehending a criminal they were after for a long time. The role of
paint analysis in this case was enormous and to date it is one of the cases people refer to when
discussing the relationship between forensic science and crime (Smith, 2005).
In 1984, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire residents suffered sleepless nights with fear and terror in
their homes. Armed burglaries, rape as well as indecent and uncouth sexual assaults became the order
of the day. The residents barred their windows, the police intensified their security surveillance on
both land and air, vigilante groups came up but still the culprit otherwise named the fox was scot free
and continued with his criminal acts. Fox continued to unleash his terror in many towns despite his
profiling by the police. He went into other towns like Tring, Cheddington, Leighton Buzzard and
Milton Keynes (Malcolm, n.d.).
In April 1984, in Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, a 74 year old woman became the first victim of the Fox.

Susan Sontag s View on Interpretation and its Applications and Analysis Using Bedlam Painting
Number Eight
Interpretation has been a phenomenon existing from the time immemorial. There has been a long
tradition of interpretation, in all occupations. Interpretation of arts and literature has gone to an extent
that it has taken shape of a discipline and has grown as a methodology and an art itself. Eliot even
says, We might remind ourselves that criticism is as inevitable as breathing . Method of Interpretation
has long been a subject of discussion among intellectual circles and it has been subject to a constant
evolution ever since it came into being. Moreover, the conventional methods have always been
circling around the dynamics of relationship of the signifier and the signified, a discourse upon
meaning of a work of art. Sontag has proposed an objection towards the traditional methods of such
kind. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Tyson uses many rhetorical devices in his passage such as rhetorical questions, sensory details, and
figurative language . By using these he made the reader to be more involved with the passage because

Tyson uses is asking rhetorical questions. By asking these he lets the reader ponder about what he is

Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes Essay
Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes In 1651, Thomas Hobbes published Leviathan, his famous work that
detailed his physicalist outlook and his concept of the value of a social contract for a peaceful society
and the nature of man. His major belief was that man is a beast that defines his identity through the
need to be controlled under some kind of external, oppressive power. This essay will explain Hobbes
views of man s identity in the society and will demonstrate how it was mirrored in the political
structure. In Hobbes work, he explained that if individuals within a society continually lived by their
own self interests, they would continue to hurt each other and be stuck in a state of war, or chaos. If

In this state of war, says Hobbes, the continual fear of our neighbors would reduce our lives to:
solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. It would be solitary because we have no reason to trust anyone
else; poor because we have no possible benefit of commerce in such war; nasty because we are
continually threatened and fearful of one another; brutish because we only have time to act on our
passions like our fellow animals; and short because war of all against all results in many untimely and
violent deaths. 1 This incredibly pessimistic account of the nature of human life, Hobbes says, is born
in part by the actions of all of us, when, without any thinking, we arm ourselves and lock our doors.
Does not there as much accuse of mankind by his actions as I do with my words? But neither of us
accuse man s nature in it. The desires and the other passions of man, are in themselves no sin. No
more are the actions, that proceed from those passions, till they know a law that forbids them: which
till laws be made they cannot know: nor can a law be made, till they have agreed upon the person to
make it. 2 Accordingly, by arming ourselves and locking our doors, Hobbes political
recommendations reflect the way we live. In today s society it seems that no one believes in anything
but money, which is leaving us morally bankrupt. People do what meets their own self interests. This
moral disintegration pulses through

Cheating And Cheating By Joe Posnanski Summary
In Cheating and CHEATING by Joe Posnanski in response to an article written by Pete Hamill he
argues that baseball has never been an innocent game even since its conception. The main focus is on
one the most decorated baseball players in our history named Willie Mays. Posnanski uses a quote in
his article from Pete Hamill stating that the only drug from that time of baseball (mid 1900s) was joy
and says I didn t know joy was another word for amphetamines . Posnanski states further on that one
of Mays teammates when interviewed says he saw a red colored drink in Mays locker he referred to as
greenies. So if drugs were okay then when taken by Mays among other players then why are we so
outraged now when we find out a player has been taking steroids? So what if Mays had a drink of red

Rommel Leadership Traits
AN ANALYTICAL ESSAY ON THE LEADERSHIP TRAITS OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN
ROMMEL Rommel, Rommel, Rommel, Rommel ! he cried. What else matters but beating him?
Winston Churchill (Cairo Conference, 8 August 1942) INTRODUCTION 1. Leaders and the
leadership are two perennially significant subjects of human interest. In the military field, the role of
leadership assumes greater significance as the actions of a leader has direct bearing on the lives of his
men and fate of his nation. Therefore the study of leadership is of critical importance to comprehend
and develop the nuances of the art of military leadership. In the same context, study of military
leadership models constructed by great captains is of utmost importance so as to draw pertinent
lessons for the training of future military leadership. The selection of Rommel has great personal
significance for author, his armed forces and by extension militaries of all developing countries. The
significance lies in the fact that Rommel throughout his military career had limited access to the
resources in comparison to his adversaries and no general was able to achieve more with less than the

Analysis Of The Movie Casablanca
Intro
Casablanca, first released on January 23rd, 1943 is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of Classical
Hollywood film. Written and released in the midst of World War Two it explores themes such as love,
desire and especially sacrifice. Although the love story of the protagonists is the cause and catalyst for
most of the narrative, one would not necessarily associate it with the conventional Classical
Hollywood love story. Rather as a fabula based on the principle of the importance of sacrifice in order
to overcome a common enemy, in this case the Nazis. Casablanca does indeed contain many of the
common characteristics identified with the Classical Hollywood film. An example being the the way
director, Michael Curtiz used a mainly chronologically ordered narrative structure and the utilisation
of a Cause and Effect chain. In this essay I will looking at the various ways I believe this film does fall
into the criteria of a Classical Hollywood narrative and also how some could perceive that it does not.
From the opening sequence one can establish that Casablanca obeys the elementary principles used in
the Classical Hollywood narrative structure. In the initial minutes of the film the audience is
introduced via a voice over of the various political happenings prior to the films start such as Hitler s
occupation of Europe and the surge of refugees who fled the Nazi s to Casablanca. The use of
narration presents the audience with a simple introduction which the rest of

The Most Deadly Drugs are Already Legal Essay examples
This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. Fried egg is probably the most influential commercial
of our generation. We feared it, we laughed at it, some of us stopped eating eggs, and we made a lot of
t shirts about it. And who was scaring us? Who was so concerned about our health? Our loving
friends: The Partnership for a Drug Free America (PDFA). We used to watch those commercials and
get all warm and fuzzy inside, someone out there cared enough about us to spend a lot of money on
those frightening ads. Those good people down at the PDFA really don t want us using drugs. Or do
they?

profitable ones that kill more people. And ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, a pragmatic PDFA ignores the very drugs which are taking the most American lives and
focuses on relatively harmless drugs, like marijuana. I m not advocating pot smoking. I ve never
smoked pot before. But lets look at the medical facts. According to the Center for Disease Control,
tobacco is now the leading cause of death in America, killing a thousand Americans a day. Alcohol
takes 130,000 lives annually, not including traffic fatalities. Marijuana has never killed anyone. Over
500,000 people die annually from tobacco and alcohol, more than 35 times the number of deaths from
all illegal drugs combined. The Media Awareness Project reports that Tylenol, aspirin, Advil, Motrin
and similar medications have accounted for four times more emergency hospital visits than all street
drugs combined. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, Tylenol alone

Puritans And Puritans Essay
The most known acts of cruelty in the power of the people are the various punishments dealt out by
the Puritans. Then you have the Quakers they weren t just men appearing on labels of oatmeal bins;
they were chosen to be on the label because the Quaker faith projected the values of honesty, integrity,
purity, and strength. However, the Puritans and Quakers both traveled to the New World to escape
religious prosecutions. John Winthrop, leading the Puritans, wanted a more purified state and society,
giving them the name, Puritans. William Penn, leading the Quakers, wanted to spread their beliefs
through themselves. They questioned leaders, resulting in leading themselves. Both had different
views of reconstructing a new society, religion, and government. Religion was important to the
Quaker and Puritans, but how far they took it made them different. Instead of fighting to purify the
Church of England, the Puritans just traveled to the New World. They settled in the Massachusetts
Bay Colony, which is Boston today. They were able to start over and do it the right way, but everyone
had to practice the bible or be punished. In their purified eyes, the Church back in England was
embracing too many Catholic beliefs. Puritans had zero tolerance and took religion very seriously,
making them a theocracy after leaving that in the first place. They were led by John Winthrop. On the
other hand, the Quakers were known as the friends. They believed everyone had their own inner light

The 1920s was a very eventful time period for the US crime scene. With the emergences of major
crime bosses like Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Charles Luciano, and others there was much to be done
in the crime world. Charles Lucky Luciano (born as Salvatore Lucania) would become a key player in
the reshaping and modernization of the mafia and the crime world. Young Luciano would show signs
of pursuing a criminal career. His parents and family however disapproved of their son s action and
career path and essentially exiled him, respecting his family s wishes he would later change his name
from Salvatore Lucania to Charles Luciano. He also by the age of 10 he involved extortion, and
thievery. Upon his arrest for the distribution of drugs in 1915, the police would offered to release him
if he would tell them what he knew about the mob, Luciano however refused to talk due to the Sicilian

of the crime world and how operations worked. He also profited greatly from the operations and

Leadership In The Film Coach Carter As A Basketball Coach
Management is a tremendously significant factor in leadership, as no good leader can be an ineffective
manager. Every successful manager has and demands respect, is passionate and caring, builds a team,
obtains expectations, and helps people grow. In the influential film Coach Carter, we are introduced to
a character by the name of Ken Carter, who is offered a position as a basketball coach at Richmond
High School, upon he decides to accept the offer to take on the mission of guiding, training, and
teaching students on the team how to not only be great basketball players, but how to be great students
as well. Throughout the film Ken Carter demonstrates a unique and distinctive coaching style that
ultimately leads his students to success.
Every coach has their own style of teaching and training their players, however after watching the film
Coach Carter it is palpable that Ken Carter has a very unique and particular style of coaching. After
taking on the role as a basketball coach at Richmond High School, Carter recognises that his students
have no intent on succeeding in their academic studies and simply have the mindset to be successful in
their beloved sport of basketball. Carter obtained a strong disagreeing of these views, as well as the
belief the staff in the school acquired that the statistics are too difficult to beat, so the additional effort
put in will not differentiate anything so Carter made a contract for his students which stated what rules
they must follow,

Robotic Prosthetics Vs. Real Limbs
We are all so used to using our limbs, most of us wouldn t know what to do without them. However,
some people, because of accidents or sickness, have lost theirs. Through the use of prosthetics, they
can have some of that use back, though it still can t compare to a real limb. But, recent advancements
in robotic prosthetics and a steady increase in capabilities show that prosthetics may eventually be
replaced with robotics, and may become just as good as or better than real limbs.
While robotic prosthetics are a recent development, prosthetics have been around for a long time. In
the Funk Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, It gives a short history of prosthetics. They were first

Prosthetics require pre programed movements and take practice to be able to use right, although
connecting prosthetics right into our nervous systems could fix this problem(Atzori, Manfredo). There
are also only a few areas on prosthetic limbs right now that can feel. Scientists have been
experimenting with synthetic skin that can feel temperature, to improve senses, but this hasn t been
used on limbs yet. Robotic prosthetics are nowhere near perfect, but advancements like these show
progress toward making this the future of prosthetic limbs.
Robotic prosthetics are in use now, although they aren t nearly as advanced as some of the ones just
mentioned. Some amputees have them, and they are able to perform basic tasks like walking and
picking things up. However, movements are still limited and the lack of senses prevents the kind of
precision our own limbs provide. They are also very expensive so most people don t have access to
them. An average robotic leg is around one hundred thousand dollars, and may not even be very
versatile. Many don t allow much movement, and often are not waterproof. They are a good start, but

Wallace, Gamelyn And Robin Hood Analysis
The stories of Wallace, Gamelyn, and Robin Hood are medieval legends written by Maurice Keen in
The Outlaws of Medieval Legend. Keen depicts the popular legends of medieval heroes who became
outlaws during the thirteenth to fifteen centuries. He also defines the term outlaw, which is, a person
who puts himself outside the protection of the law. What their attitudes and why were these outlaws
worshiped as heroes? The reason varies in each story. Keen maintains the main theme of outlawry.
Wallace, Gamelyn, and Robin Hood all have negative attitudes toward both secular and religious
authorities, as they fight against tyrants and oppression to become heroes of medieval people.
The first outlaw legend of Wallace shows that he had attitudes of racial hatred toward the English and
different opinions with Scottish aristocracies, but there is no sufficient evidence of his action against
religious people. Wallace was a patriotic warrior and a leader of the Scottish rebellion that sought
independence from English tyranny. Keen (2000) claims Scottish people suffered the behaviors and
barbaric actions of English soldiers (p. 66). With Wallace, the sheriff of Lanark murdered his beloved
lady, Marion Bradfute, and this unreasonable cruel toward innocent people ignited his anger and
hatred. He killed the sheriff of Lanark and became an outlaw afterward. Wallace disagreed with
Scottish aristocracies, who held lands in England, to compromise with the conqueror Edward I.
However, Wallace

Research has shown that teamwork increases efficiency (Thylefors et al, 2005 in Newson, 2006). A
team can pool knowledge and skills and, if well motivated, create energy increasing a team s
efficiency beyond that of the individuals.
Modern views on teamwork also consider the satisfaction of the workforce by becoming more
autonomous and reducing hierarchical structures (Ovretveit et al, 1997).
5 Team Development
The most commonly used model to discuss team development is Tuckman s (1965) (in Huczynski
Buchanan, 2001) forming, storming, norming and performing model. However, the team concerned
more closely followed the Cog s ladder model (see appendix 1. for full description) (Walton, 1984).
1. Polite stage (day 1)
The initial introductions of the team members took place during a coffee break, however, the task was
not clearly discussed at this stage and so roles were not yet defined. The members worked at a
distance from each other to complete a treasure hunt task.
2. Why are we here? (day 2)
The goals were established and two subgroups (student nurses, A and B and student radiographers, C,
D, E and F) emerged.
3. Bid for power (day 2/3)
Conflict and rivalry within the group prevailed. At this stage two members of the group, A and C,
became identifiable as leaders.
4. Constructive phase (day 3/4)
The team did eventually reach this stage with activities being divided amongst members and all
members participating.

with the loss of languages there is loss of history, traditional songs and poetry. All kind of forms which

Embm History
In order to understand Evidence Based Medicine, or EBM, a brief history of its origins will be
beneficial. According to Claridge and Fabian (2005), one of the earliest examples of EBM is found in
the biblical book of Daniel. Regardless of religious affiliation, this story or anecdote provides an
excellent example of a controlled study, which is one of the foundations of EBM. In this story, Daniel
and his three friends Azariah, Mishael, and Hananiah, refuse to eat the food provided to them by their
king. Since starvation was not an option, they proposed to their steward (who was set over them) to
test them for ten days by only giving them vegetables and water for their consumption. Then they,
Daniel and his three friends, would be compared to the other young men who had consumed the food
provided to them by the king. Daniel and his friends agreed that they would then submit to the
direction and wisdom of the steward, after he was able to evaluate both groups. The end result of the
experiment was that Daniel and his friends were noticeably healthier than their counterparts who had
eaten of the king s food (Claridge, Fabian, 2005, p. 548). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An excellent example of this is the now obsolete practice of bloodletting. It is believed that ancient
humans did not understand the true nature of disease as modern scientists and medical practitioners do

Therefore, the logic employed in treatment consisted of trying to let the demon out of the body by
creating lacerations, or bloodletting, by which the demon could evacuate from the body (Claridge,

Influence of Iliad to Troy
First off, Homer s Iliad was the main source of influence for Wolfgang Petersen s film, Troy. However,
even though it is directly influenced by the poem, Troy does not stay true to the poem for the entire
movie. Some major difference s between Homer s Iliad and Wolfgang Petersen s film Troy, is that
there was no mention of the Gods being participants in the battle of Troy. This was a major plot point
in Homer s Iliad, as the Gods who fought on the battlefield had somewhat of an influence on the
outcome of each battle and eventually the outcome of the war. By taking out the God element that the
original poem had, Wolfgang Petersen has given the film more room for human emotions. This allows

Petersen s version of the Trojan war, stays true to the basic plot line of the actual Trojan war detailed

Disadvantages Of Coffee Grinders
Grinding Coffee
The ground coffee is the most suitable coffee to buy. After all, it is accessible everywhere and not
difficult to load into the coffee maker. The ground coffee loses flavor faster than the whole bean
coffee. Also, the fresher your coffee, the more taste, and flavor it will add when it is brewed. It is good
to grind coffee before brewing to provide a more refreshing taste of coffee.
There are two common types of coffee grinders, both with its advantages and disadvantages. They
also have different varieties of grounded coffee ranging from finer grind to coarser grind.
The two types of Coffee Bean Grinders
There are two common types of coffee bean grinders used for personal purpose namely: Burr grinder
and Propeller grinder.
Burr Grinder
The burr grinder makes use of the two serrated discs to grind the beans. All you need to do is to set up

chamber, and initiate the grinding process. The ground coffee ready to be brewed will be collected

Democracy In J. Allen Smith s The Spirit Of American...
Discussion Democracy flourished in America where it had previously floundered in Europe. As early
as 1907, J. Allen Smith attributed this to the fact that the colonists were more active, enterprising, and
dissatisfied than the typical Englishman, in his work The Spirit of American Government,. He noted
that the Revolutionary War was not sparked by colonists hating the monarchical system, but by the
negative relationship between England and its newest colony. This attitude, coupled with an active
revolution, created the perfect outlet for democratic theory to be expressed and enacted (Smith, 1907;
Thoman, n.d.). In creating an independent nation, the founding fathers looked to various forms of
government, both ancient and modern, for inspiration.

Energy Security And Development Of Energy
1. Introduction
Energy is an essential material basis for human survival and development. As the world biggest
developing country, China s demand for energy will experience a steady increase with the
development of the economy . However, many problems are facing the energy security in rural China.
At the early state of energy shortage, state policy indicated that the rural energy needed to be self
reliance. Actually, rural energy is a buffer of China s energy system . With the development of the
China s economy, the government begun to realize the importance of energy security in rural China.
As the important sector of national energy policy, the energy development of the rural area is guided
by the sustainable energy strategy in China. Meanwhile, environmental issues were induced by
massive fossil energy consumption. Most of energy is generated by non renewable fossil resources in
China. These resources will be exhausted in the following couple of decades. Otherwise, the
environmental issues were also exposed, most of greenhouse gas and pollutants emission are
generated during the process of fossil energy production and use. Renewable energy resources, due to
their zero or near zero emissions of GHGs and air pollutants, are progressively becoming a greater
part of the global energy sector . In the national level, Chinese government planned non fossil fuel
energy to reach 11.4 percent and 15 percent of the total energy consumption by 2015 and 2020 .

The Importance Of A Common Bumper Sticker Quote
Being a young woman of this generation, I have come to realize the validity of a common bumper

frightening. The ever bearing fear of disapproval weighed heavy upon my little shoulders, because
frankly, speaking against adults was unforgivable and meant no rewards in the form of sweets or shiny
foil stickers with terrible plays on words. But, I digress, the trueness of the statement solidified itself
the older I got when the reality became clear; women are to be an object, a fixture, a malleable ball of
clay left for shaping at the hands of the man she shadows. However true this may be, this paper, my
last soapbox to preach observations upon, aims to reference: The Wife s Lament, Beowulf, Paradise
Lost, The Flea, and The Poetess s Hasty Resolution to reiterate and further emphasize the use of, shift

How Did Football Start
Have you ever wondered how the sport of football ever got started? Well, it is believed to have began
in Ancient Greece from the game harpaston. The rules of harpaston was to cross a goal line, running
with a ball, and stopping a player from crossing the goal line by tackling just like American Football.
Unlike football (american), harpaston lacked a lot of rules like field length and number of players. It is
also believed by many that football may have originated from England in the mid 1200 s when Henry
IV was in power. Football ended up becoming such a success in England that King Henry temporarily
banned the sport for distracting the English citizens from the traditional English sports like archery.
(Football wasn t even considered a sport until the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This game was also the first intercollegiate football game as well. In the early 1870 s four
representatives from four different universities in the United States met in New York to come up with
a way to bring excitement to the game of football as well as making sure the players were safe and had
safety procedures while playing. Eventually, the four universities founded the Intercollegiate Football
Association (IFA) and allowed 15 players to be on the field at one time versus the old rule of 20
players at a time. The first professional football player in the United States is considered to be William
Heffelfinger from Yale University. The founder of football in America is considered by many to be
Walter Camp. Walter Camp was the coach of the 1888 Yale Football team, played halfback for Yale,
served on The IFA for 48 years, and came up with some of the rules of football still used today like a
scrimmage line, 11 players on a field at one time, and the quarterback position. Mr. Camp passed
away on March 14, 1925 with a legacy that is remembered to this

Mail Order Brides By Marie Belleau
Mail Order Brides
Women generally marry because they desire to live happily ever after with the man of their dreams.
They have desires to marry a certain type of man, with blue eyes and blonde hair or green eyes and
brown hair. Certain women want to raise kids with the assistance of a caring, loving husband. In other
countries, women often transfer to another country to marry, in hopes of achieving that dream of a
content family. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. For a mail order bride, her husband typically
tries to maintain an authority over her, even physically abusing her into submission. She complies
only because her husband could have her deported and she needs him to provide necessities for her.
Since mail order brides are generally abused by their husbands, these women need to be protected,
especially since they are in a foreign country and cannot defend themselves.
Mail order brides are women who transfer to another country to marry. Marie Claire Belleau describes
these women as victims of difficult relationships, separations, and divorces (595). Basically, women
that are mail ordered had been in failed relationships, so they crave redemption by traveling to another
country and marrying a specific type of man they hope are different than their previous experiences.
Except in reality, the mail order brides aren t treated as they imagined. The husbands often beat their
wives into submission, while the women can t protest for fear of being deported or

Analysis Of Standing At Armageddon By Nell Irvin Essay
Kadiatou Fofana
Professor Mitchell
US History II
2.5.15
Our History
The industrial revolution introduced many new technology and improved our economic system. There
have been a large increase in manufacture and machine tools since then. This led to better
transportation, steam powered factories, consumer goods, a large workforce, and labour conditions.
During the 1870 s , many financial issues had arise in the United States of America and in many
European countries. Due to the financial crises that arise , it led to a major depressing era in history
that is called the Panic of 1873. In Standing at Armageddon written by Nell Irvin Painter, the author
discusses the progressive era and the United States economic crisis , as well as, social status during the
ninetheeth century. Painter explains on how the high class white people owned most of the United
States industry and due to their wealth, they owned fifty one percent of the properties in America.
They were the wealthiest one percent of the United States. There were different layers of wealth and
social status which also integrates with race and ethnicity. Those who were wealthy in America weren
t the ones working hard and getting their hands dirty. Many low class were immigrants, women and
blacks who worked in factories and were receiving low wages and poor work conditions. The low
class owned only 1.2 percent of the properties in America. This caused major issues in the united
states because the workers formed

The Pilgrim s Progress Essay
The Pilgrim s Progress
The author of The Pilgrim s Progress is well described by Coleridge s remark: His piety was baffled
by his genius; and Bunyan the dreamer overcame the Bunyan of the conventicle. This remark points
out the difficulty that Bunyan faces when he attempts to write a religious piece of work in the style of
allegory. The Pilgrim s Progress is pious because it is a piece written in dedication to God. It contains
important religious teachings what a good Christian should do and what he should not do. What
Coleridge means by Bunyan s genius is basically the story itself. The story is so well written that
people become so interested in the story and forget the whole spiritual truth behind and this worry
Bunyan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People at his time indulged in plays and drama for purely earthly pleasure. This is opposed by the
Puritans since it is regarded as a kind of corruption and that one could be extracted from the direction
to God. But Bunyan justified that if these things are done for God, they could be accepted. The phrase
I have used similitudes that appeared at the original cover page of the book explains the use of similes,
metaphors and other figures of language. God Himself also speaks in figurative language, not in plain
language. Bunyan is going to use similitude to tell the Christians what they should do. It is therefore
not for pure enjoyment to read this book. The aim of this book is to teach a religious lesson and ask
people to learn from it. Bunyan went on to justify what he did by saying that God had allowed him to
do so. He clarified that he was not writing to please anyone and that it should never be used as a way
to show off one s ability. He also reminded people that they had to interpret the Bible for themselves
for God is not always clear in what he says. The story opens as a dream and this is significant because
it is the way that God speaks to his prophets. Bunyan somehow felt himself like a modern version of
prophet and he is determined to write about his vision. The word I has been used at the opening of the
story and all throughout, and this is significant since this I (the dreamer) can be anyone of us. There is
a strong sense of

I recognise your claim in your speech and I have to say I disagree with you. I solemnly believe that the
statue should be put up because the pioneers had every right to come here. They were in search for a
better living because in Holland they were not able to raise children nor make a living. It is very easy
today to compare it too refugees that come to America to better their lives also. Today we have people
are coming to America to better their lives, just like the pioneers did. This statue shows the American
dream. It is tragic that there was a war that resulted in their appearances but change is natural in life.

Growing up in Torrance, California, Zamperini ran track at Torrance High School and discovered that he had a competitive streak a mile wide when it came to long distance running. In 1934, Zamperini set the national high school mile record, and his time of 4 minutes and 21.2 seconds would stand for an incredible 20 years. His track prowess also caught the attention of the University of Southern California, and he earned a scholarship to attend. After the forty seven days on the raft made them week. In captivity across a series of prison camps, Zamperini and Phillips were separated and subjected to torture, both physical and psychological. They were beaten and starved, and Zamperini was singled out and abused repeatedly by a camp sergeant called the Bird, who would tear into fits of psychotic violence. Yet Zamperini, as a former Olympic athlete, was seen as a propaganda tool by the Japanese, a scenario that likely saved him from execution. For months Zamperini lived in daily fear of the man he came to regard as an inhuman monster. But late in 1944 Watanabe was posted to another camp. In March 1945, with American B 29 bombers raining incendiaries over Tokyo, Zamperini and a group of fellow prisoners were moved to a camp known as 4B at Naoetsu, an industrial village on Japan s west coast. On arrival Zamperini was dismayed to find that Watanabe, too, had been transferred to the same camp. It was, Zamperini told his biographer Laura Hillenbrand, the darkest moment of his ... Time after time, we get new reports on Quebec being disturbed at the sight of all the different symbols in their province; they aren t too fond of multiculturalism. Quebec does not believe that people that work in the public sector such as: Jews, Muslims, and Sikhs and are targeted because of their religion; but still will allow those to who are Catholic/Christians to keep their own symbols (Hughes, 2013). His major belief was that man is a beast that defines his identity through the need to be controlled under some kind of external, oppressive power. This essay will explain Hobbes views of man s identity in the society and will demonstrate how it was mirrored in the political structure. In this state of war, says Hobbes, the continual fear of our neighbors would reduce our lives to: solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. It would be solitary because we have no reason to trust anyone else; poor because we have no possible benefit of commerce in such war; nasty because we are continually threatened and fearful of one another; brutish because we only have time to act on our passions like our fellow animals; and short because war of all against all results in many untimely and violent deaths. 1 This incredibly pessimistic account of the nature of human life, Hobbes says, is born in part by the actions of all of us, when, without any thinking, we arm ourselves and lock our doors. Does not there as much accuse of mankind by his actions as I do with my words? But neither of us accuse man s nature in it. The desires and the other passions of man, are in themselves no sin. No more are the actions, that proceed from those passions, till they know a law that forbids them: which till laws be made they cannot know: nor can a law be made, till they have agreed upon the person to make it. 2 Accordingly, by arming ourselves and locking our doors, Hobbes political recommendations reflect the way we live. In today s society it seems that no one believes in anything but money, which is leaving us morally bankrupt. People do what meets their own self interests. Written and released in the midst of World War Two it explores themes such as love, desire and especially sacrifice. Although the love story of the protagonists is the cause and catalyst for most of the narrative, one would not necessarily associate it with the conventional Classical Hollywood love story. Rather as a fabula based on the principle of the importance of sacrifice in order to overcome a common enemy, in this case the Nazis. Casablanca does indeed contain many of the common characteristics identified with the Classical Hollywood film. An example being the the way director, Michael Curtiz used a mainly chronologically ordered narrative structure and the utilisation of a Cause and Effect chain. In this essay I will looking at the various ways I believe this film does fall into the criteria of a Classical Hollywood narrative and also how some could perceive that it does not. From the opening sequence one can establish that Casablanca obeys the elementary principles used in the Classical Hollywood narrative structure. In the initial minutes of the film the audience is introduced via a voice over of the various political happenings prior to the films start such as Hitler s occupation of Europe and the surge of refugees who fled the Nazi s to Casablanca. • 28. Wallace, Gamelyn And Robin Hood Analysis The stories of Wallace, Gamelyn, and Robin Hood are medieval legends written by Maurice Keen in The Outlaws of Medieval Legend. Keen depicts the popular legends of medieval heroes who became outlaws during the thirteenth to fifteen centuries. He also defines the term outlaw, which is, a person who puts himself outside the protection of the law. What their attitudes and why were these outlaws worshiped as heroes? The reason varies in each story. Keen maintains the main theme of outlawry. Wallace, Gamelyn, and Robin Hood all have negative attitudes toward both secular and religious authorities, as they fight against tyrants and oppression to become heroes of medieval people. The first outlaw legend of Wallace shows that he had attitudes of racial hatred toward the English and different opinions with Scottish aristocracies, but there is no sufficient evidence of his action against religious people. Wallace was a patriotic warrior and a leader of the Scottish rebellion that sought independence from English tyranny. Keen (2000) claims Scottish people suffered the behaviors and barbaric actions of English soldiers (p. 66). With Wallace, the sheriff of Lanark murdered his beloved lady, Marion Bradfute, and this unreasonable cruel toward innocent people ignited his anger and hatred. He killed the sheriff of Lanark and became an outlaw afterward. Wallace disagreed with Scottish aristocracies, who held lands in England, to compromise with the conqueror Edward I. Research has shown that teamwork increases efficiency (Thylefors et al, 2005 in Newson, 2006). Modern views on teamwork also consider the satisfaction of the workforce by becoming more autonomous and reducing hierarchical structures (Ovretveit et al, 1997). 5 Team Development The most commonly used model to discuss team development is Tuckman s (1965) (in Huczynski Buchanan, 2001) forming, storming, norming and performing model. According to Claridge and Fabian (2005), one of the earliest examples of EBM is found in the biblical book of Daniel. Regardless of religious affiliation, this story or anecdote provides an excellent example of a controlled study, which is one of the foundations of EBM. In this story, Daniel and his three friends Azariah, Mishael, and Hananiah, refuse to eat the food provided to them by their king. Since starvation was not an option, they proposed to their steward (who was set over them) to test them for ten days by only giving them vegetables and water for their consumption. Then they, Daniel and his three friends, would be compared to the other young men who had consumed the food provided to them by the king. Daniel and his friends agreed that they would then submit to the direction and wisdom of the steward, after he was able to evaluate both groups.
