Belapur-Kharghar Rapid Transit system
CIDCO
Introduction
The government of maharashtra (gom) has entrusted City and Industrial Development Corporation of
maharashtra ltd. (CIDCO) to plan and create Environment-friendly, model urban settlement with full-fledged
physical and Social infrastructure to meet residential, commercial and industrial needs of The population at
present and in the years to come. To boost the earlier Development, a rail-based transport was suggested in the
80s and mass Rapid transportation master plan was prepared with six suburban corridor Routes as under:
Sr.No Corridor Length status
1. Mankhurd-Belapur-Panvel 29kms Completed
2. Thane-Tubhe-Nerul/Vashi 20kms Completed
3. Nerul-Seawoods-Uran 27kms In Progress
4. Panvel-Ulwe-Uran 32kms Under planning
5. Ring Railway around CBD 15kms Under Planning
Out of these, first two are completed and the third one is in progress. Meanwhile, it was found that land use in the Navi
Mumbai area has changed to a large extent due to the proposed SEZ and Navi Mumbai International Airport. Hence, CIDCO
decided to review the master plan for transportation connectivity.
Consultants
 The Louis Berger Group Inc. (LBG) has been appointed by CIDCO as "General Consultant" for Navi Mumbai Metro Line project. LBG would provide
General Consultancy Services for Implementation of Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 from Belapur to Kharghar.

Taking the first step
 After studying the various modes of transports such as Monorail, Bus, etc., the consultant
proposed connectivity by Metro Rail System due to various merits on account of it being
energy efficient, pollution free and occupying less land space as compared to other modes
of transport. The passenger carrying capacity of medium Metro Rail System can be up to
35000 PHPDT (Peak Hour Per Direction Traffic) whereas Monorail System is suitable up to
20000 PHPDT. Hence, Metro Rail System was preferred for Navi Mumbai.
 The consultants proposed six metro corridors in Navi Mumbai, out of these Belapur-kharghar
and Kharghar-kalamboli-khandeshwar which were considered as metro corridors have now
been decided to be suburban corridors. Since Navi Mumbai International Airport is
approved, need was felt to review the Master Plan of Navi Mumbai’s connectivity.

Phase one
 CBD Belapur-Kharghar
 International Airport Corridor, The study recommended that rail-based corridor of Belapur-Kharghar-
Proposed Airport is the only potentially developable corridor at present. It was further recommended by
DMRC to take up Metro Rail Project from Belapur to kharghar in the 1st stage, taloja to Khandeshwar as
2nd stage and interlink between kharghar and taloja in 3rd stage due to the following Reasons :-
1) The area is developing and Metro will boost the development and will fetch additional premium on
land price (which may supplement a part of the construction cost).
2) This is alternative to Mansarovar - Taloja suburban line. The suburban alignment is away from the human
settlement and the proposed Metro is passing through the settlement to serve the occupants. Proposed
ridership is adequate to make the project viable for operation.
 Maharashtra Government has authorised CIDCO as MRT system administration Implementing Agency
under Indian Tramway Act 1886 for implementation of Belapur-kharghar-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar Metro
Rail Project on September 30, 2010.
Project Cost
 Project cost details for CBD Belapur-kharghar-Khandeshwar-Navi Mumbai International Airport Corridor
 CBD Belapur-kharghar-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar Corridor is recommended by DMRC to be executed in three
stages as given below:
 Stage - I: Line No. 1 from Belapur to Kharghar (11.10 km). The cost of the project will be approximately 1,985
crores.
 Stage - II: Line No. 2 from Khandeshwar to Taloja MIDC (8.35 km). The cost of the project will be approximately
1,509 crores.
 Stage - III: Line No. 3 from Interconnection of Line - I & II (2.00 km). The cost of the project will be approximately
574 crores. This cost is tentative and subject to change as per site feasibility.
 The above work of Corridor 1 is expected to be completed in 5 years, along with the completion of 1st Phase of
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and is proposed to be extended up to NMIA.

NMMC Metro Rail Project

  • 1. Navi Mumbai Metro Project Project Details Belapur-Kharghar Rapid Transit system CIDCO
  • 2. Introduction The government of maharashtra (gom) has entrusted City and Industrial Development Corporation of maharashtra ltd. (CIDCO) to plan and create Environment-friendly, model urban settlement with full-fledged physical and Social infrastructure to meet residential, commercial and industrial needs of The population at present and in the years to come. To boost the earlier Development, a rail-based transport was suggested in the 80s and mass Rapid transportation master plan was prepared with six suburban corridor Routes as under: Sr.No Corridor Length status 1. Mankhurd-Belapur-Panvel 29kms Completed 2. Thane-Tubhe-Nerul/Vashi 20kms Completed 3. Nerul-Seawoods-Uran 27kms In Progress 4. Panvel-Ulwe-Uran 32kms Under planning 5. Ring Railway around CBD 15kms Under Planning Out of these, first two are completed and the third one is in progress. Meanwhile, it was found that land use in the Navi Mumbai area has changed to a large extent due to the proposed SEZ and Navi Mumbai International Airport. Hence, CIDCO decided to review the master plan for transportation connectivity.
  • 3. Consultants  The Louis Berger Group Inc. (LBG) has been appointed by CIDCO as "General Consultant" for Navi Mumbai Metro Line project. LBG would provide General Consultancy Services for Implementation of Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 from Belapur to Kharghar.  Team:-  Mr John R Gretton Project Director, GC (LBG) Navi Mumbai Metro Project.  Mr Surjit S.   • 4. Taking the first step  After studying the various modes of transports such as Monorail, Bus, etc., the consultant proposed connectivity by Metro Rail System due to various merits on account of it being energy efficient, pollution free and occupying less land space as compared to other modes of transport. The passenger carrying capacity of medium Metro Rail System can be up to 35000 PHPDT (Peak Hour Per Direction Traffic) whereas Monorail System is suitable up to 20000 PHPDT. Hence, Metro Rail System was preferred for Navi Mumbai.  The consultants proposed six metro corridors in Navi Mumbai, out of these Belapur-kharghar and Kharghar-kalamboli-khandeshwar which were considered as metro corridors have now been decided to be suburban corridors. Since Navi Mumbai International Airport is approved, need was felt to review the Master Plan of Navi Mumbai’s connectivity.

Phase one  CBD Belapur-Kharghar  International Airport Corridor, The study recommended that rail-based corridor of Belapur-Kharghar- Proposed Airport is the only potentially developable corridor at present. It was further recommended by DMRC to take up Metro Rail Project from Belapur to kharghar in the 1st stage, taloja to Khandeshwar as 2nd stage and interlink between kharghar and taloja in 3rd stage due to the following Reasons :- 1) The area is developing and Metro will boost the development and will fetch additional premium on land price (which may supplement a part of the construction cost). 2) This is alternative to Mansarovar - Taloja suburban line. The suburban alignment is away from the human settlement and the proposed Metro is passing through the settlement to serve the occupants. Proposed ridership is adequate to make the project viable for operation.  Maharashtra Government has authorised CIDCO as MRT system administration Implementing Agency under Indian Tramway Act 1886 for implementation of Belapur-kharghar-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar Metro Rail Project on September 30, 2010.
  • 7. Project Cost  Project cost details for CBD Belapur-kharghar-Khandeshwar-Navi Mumbai International Airport Corridor  CBD Belapur-kharghar-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar Corridor is recommended by DMRC to be executed in three stages as given below:  Stage - I: Line No. 1 from Belapur to Kharghar (11.10 km). The cost of the project will be approximately 1,985 crores.  Stage - II: Line No. 2 from Khandeshwar to Taloja MIDC (8.35 km). The cost of the project will be approximately 1,509 crores.  Stage - III: Line No. 3 from Interconnection of Line - I & II (2.00 km). The cost of the project will be approximately 574 crores. This cost is tentative and subject to change as per site feasibility.  The above work of Corridor 1 is expected to be completed in 5 years, along with the completion of 1st Phase of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) and is proposed to be extended up to NMIA.
