“The word ‘ONTAP’ is inspired by beer”
Note: Simulate Ontap 9 is out and available for download.
What is NetApp ONTAP Simulator?
Simulate ONTAP is a simulator for running Data ONTAP software. It enables you to test the features
of Data ONTAP 7-Mode or clustered Data ONTAP without having to buy new hardware or disturb
your production environment.
Is ONTAP Simulator available for both 7-mode & cMODE?
Yes
Can I upgrade Simulate Ontap version?
No. Ontap cannot be upgraded for simulator, you need to download a separate build for the
appropriate Ontap version.
What is required for downloading ONTAP Simulator and where is the link?
You need NetApp login & password and here is the link for Simulator:
http://mysupport.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/simulator
What are the limitations of this Simulator compared to Ontap running on Physical systems?
Software code wise, it is as good as production code, so you can test almost all the software features
[Snapvault/SnapMirror/SnapMirro2Tape/FlexClone/Deduplication] and Protocols
[CIFS/NFS/ISCSI/NDMP/HTTP] and can simulate most of the scenarios except the following:
Simulate ONTAP does not support the following features:
• High Availability, simply called HA Pair (CFO/SFO)
• Fibre channel and SAN connectivity
• RLM (Remote LAN Module)
• CFE, BIOS, shelf FW, and so on
• Multipathing
How to install Simulator after download?
You need to install one of the following VMware applications on the host system to use Simulate
ONTAP:
• VMware Workstation
• VMware Player
• VMware vSphere
• VMware Fusion
Does Simulator image comes with pre-configured disks?
Yes. The simulator image comes pre-configured with '28' x 1 GB disks; 14 each on simulated disk
shelves 0 and 1. There are two additional simulated disk shelves 2 and 3, but they are not pre-
populated.
How much storage can I configure on the Simulator?
You can configure up to a maximum of 220+ GB total space for each Simulated ONTAP node with
pre-configured image diks. I.e you can have a maximum of four simulated disk shelves with 14 disk
drives per shelf, for a total of 56 drives per simulator. Each simulated drive is limited to 9 GB
maximum individual disk.
Can I remove the pre-configured with '28' x 1 GB disks that came along Simulate ONTAP image in
order to increase the storage space beyond 220+ GB?
Yes, you can. All you need to do is - Remove the pre-configured with '28' x 1 GB disks and populate it
with the disk type size you want. For example - you can replace them with 9 GB maximum individual
disk.
I have installed Simulator but the storage is not enough to test all features, can I know how to
populate the disks to additional shelf 2 & 3?
Please find the steps below on - How to populate disks into the additional simulated virtual shelf 2 &
3 for Clustered Ontap Simulator?

Reboot the respective Physical Node.
CDOT832::> reboot -node CDOT832-01 [whichever node it is, in your case]
After reboot, either login to GUI [OnCommand System Manager] or via ssh and add the disks to
appropriate node and then extend the aggregate space as you wish.

CDOT832::*> storage disk assign -all true -node CDOT832-01
Note: For adding additional shelf for 7-mode is very similar to cMODE, if you need help please go to
Google, there is plenty of information available on this.

NetApp ontap simulator

  • 1. “The word ‘ONTAP’ is inspired by beer” Note: Simulate Ontap 9 is out and available for download.
  • 2. What is NetApp ONTAP Simulator? Simulate ONTAP is a simulator for running Data ONTAP software. It enables you to test the features of Data ONTAP 7-Mode or clustered Data ONTAP without having to buy new hardware or disturb your production environment. Is ONTAP Simulator available for both 7-mode & cMODE? Yes Can I upgrade Simulate Ontap version? No. Ontap cannot be upgraded for simulator, you need to download a separate build for the appropriate Ontap version. What is required for downloading ONTAP Simulator and where is the link? You need NetApp login & password and here is the link for Simulator: http://mysupport.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/simulator What are the limitations of this Simulator compared to Ontap running on Physical systems? Software code wise, it is as good as production code, so you can test almost all the software features [Snapvault/SnapMirror/SnapMirro2Tape/FlexClone/Deduplication] and Protocols [CIFS/NFS/ISCSI/NDMP/HTTP] and can simulate most of the scenarios except the following: Simulate ONTAP does not support the following features: • High Availability, simply called HA Pair (CFO/SFO) • Fibre channel and SAN connectivity • RLM (Remote LAN Module) • CFE, BIOS, shelf FW, and so on • Multipathing
  • 3. How to install Simulator after download? You need to install one of the following VMware applications on the host system to use Simulate ONTAP: • VMware Workstation • VMware Player • VMware vSphere • VMware Fusion Does Simulator image comes with pre-configured disks? Yes. The simulator image comes pre-configured with '28' x 1 GB disks; 14 each on simulated disk shelves 0 and 1. There are two additional simulated disk shelves 2 and 3, but they are not pre- populated. How much storage can I configure on the Simulator? You can configure up to a maximum of 220+ GB total space for each Simulated ONTAP node with pre-configured image diks. I.e you can have a maximum of four simulated disk shelves with 14 disk drives per shelf, for a total of 56 drives per simulator. Each simulated drive is limited to 9 GB maximum individual disk. Can I remove the pre-configured with '28' x 1 GB disks that came along Simulate ONTAP image in order to increase the storage space beyond 220+ GB? Yes, you can. All you need to do is - Remove the pre-configured with '28' x 1 GB disks and populate it with the disk type size you want. For example - you can replace them with 9 GB maximum individual disk. I have installed Simulator but the storage is not enough to test all features, can I know how to populate the disks to additional shelf 2 & 3? Please find the steps below on - How to populate disks into the additional simulated virtual shelf 2 & 3 for Clustered Ontap Simulator? CDOT832::> reboot -node CDOT832-01 [whichever node it is, in your case] After reboot, either login to GUI [OnCommand System Manager] or via ssh and add the disks to appropriate node and then extend the aggregate space as you wish. CDOT832::> set -privilege advanced CDOT832::*> storage disk assign -all true -node CDOT832-01 Note: For adding additional shelf for 7-mode is very similar to cMODE, if you need help please go to Google, there is plenty of information available on this. ashwinwriter@gmail.com Aug, 2016
