INTRODUCTION
Nerve supply of face is innervated
basically by facial nerve and trigeminal
nerve.
•Facial nerve constitute motor
component
•Trigeminal nerve constitute sensory
component
WHAT IS FACIAL NERVE
?
Facial nerve is 7th cranial nerve which is of
mixed ( i.e motor and sensory) but
predominantly it is motor.
While trigeminal nerve is 5th cranial nerve
and also of mixed type and it is principal
sensory nerve of head and face.
MOTOR NERVE SUPPLY
• Motor nerve supply of the face is derived
from the facial nerve.
• After coming out of cranial cavity
through stylomastoid foramen then enters
the parotid gland.
Motor nerve is divided into
following five terminal branches:-
1. Temporal branch
2. Zygomatic branch
3. Buccal branch
A)Upper
b)Lower
4. Marginal mandibular branch
5. Cervical branch
INNERVATION OF MUSCLES OF
FACIAL EXPRESSION
SENSORY NERVE SUPPLY
Trigeminal nerve is sensory nerve
of face because it supplies the
whole of face but except skin
over the angle of mandible, which is
supplied by great auricular nerve
derived from ventral rami of 2nd and 3rd
cervical nerve.
TRIGEMINAL NERVE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE
MAJOR DIVISIONS-
1. OPTHALMIC DIVISION- Supplies upper 1/3RD
of face.
2. MAXILLARY DIVISION- Supplies middle1/3RD
of face.
3. MANDIBULAR DIVISION-Supplies lower 1/3RD
of face.

APPLIED
1. BELL’S PALSY-
It is lower motor neuron type paralysis of
facial muscles due to compression of
facial nerve in the facial canal near
stylomastoid foramen.
2.TRIGEMINAL
NEURALGIA-
It is a clinical condition
characterized by sudden
paroxysmal attacks
of lancinating pain lasting from
few hours to several days
It is confined to distribution of
one or more division of
trigeminal nerve.
3.HERPES ZOSTER
OPHTHALMICUS-
• It is viral infection
involving the
ophthalmic nerve
if present severe pain
& edema in
ophthalmic territory.
Appearance of vesicles
along the course of
cutaneous branch of
the ophthalmic nerve.
