4. What is FRP bars?
Recent advances in polymer technology have led to the
development of the latest generation FRP reinforcing bars
(mainly Glass FRP bars)
These corrosion resistant FRP bars shown promise as a way
to further protect bridges and public infrastructure from the
devastating effects of corrosion
Based on features above, FRP bars appear to be promising
alternative to steel reinforcement in concrete structures such
as marine structures, parking structures, bridge decks,
highway under extreme environments, and structures highly
susceptible to corrosion and magnetic fields.

Reinforcing the concrete
with GFRP bars would
extend the life of the
structure to 100 years or
more compared to steel-
reinforced concrete, which
needs major restoration
after 25 years in corrosion
environments
6. FRP bars are made of:
1. Fiber: Mechanical Strength
Main Functions of the Fibres:
Carry load
Provide strength
Oriented in the direction of the primary loads

Mainly Glass Basalt Carbon
7. 2. Polymer (thermoset resin): Chemical Resistance
• Main Functions of the Resin:
Transfers stresses between fibres
Provides lateral support against buckling
Protects fibres from mechanical and environmental damage

10. What gives benefits Nano-elements in GFRP?
high affinity to the functional groups of epoxy resins;
provides the complete saturability of fibers;
chemical bonding at the phase interface of fiber and epoxy;
fiber and resin constitute an integral unit.

11. What benefits Nano-elements in GFRP?
The ratio of fibers and resin provides based technical characteristics GFRP
Reducing the cost of production of GFRP bar
increase content fibers to 87-89%, with normal content 75-80% by weight;
reduction of the amount of expensive component (resine);
accelerate of the polymerization process;
provides the best physical, strength and chemical properties;
saving energy in the production.

12. Production and technology of GFRP joining nondie method of jet less broaching
“Needletrusion”
Output is more than 150‐200 m/hour;
Reinforcement comes in the form of rods with length up to 12.0 meters, diameter from 6 to 20 mm

13. Handling and Placement
From a handling and application point of view, construction and installation
practices required when using FRP reinforcing bars are similar to those used
with conventional steel bars.
In most cases, the lightweight properties of FRP bars actually make the
placement of reinforcement in formwork less time consuming.

Tunneling Soft-Eye
Once installation of the reinforcement is completed, the entire structure is concreted.
The TBM arrives at the extraction shaft which is then easily broken with the cutting
tools.

36. LIFE-CYCLE COST
Fiberglass rebar (GFRP) is a cost effective way to:
• Eliminate fundamental and expensive repair problems
created by black steel reinforcement.
• Maintain cosmetically attractive structures over time (less
cracking and ugly rust staining) resulting in higher
property resale values.
• Reduce concrete cover and corrosion protection
measures taken to protect black steel rebar.
• Ensure your structures will last up to 4 times longer
eliminating expensive capital expenditures over time.
• Make slabs exposed to cyclic loads last 20 times longer
than steel reinforced slabs.
