> Friction Curve
The curve below shows an example of the evolution of friction coefficient as a function of time.
Friction curve in this application seems not to be a key factor of analysis compared to wear
describe in the following chart.
Sample S1 - Curves
Average friction coefficient : 0.72.
The average value of friction coefficient varies between 0.68 and 0.75 and is stable for all
samples.
> Sample wear and wear track profile of ceramic tile
Shank chisels wear has been defined as the lost weight during the test. Shank chisels were
weighted before and after testing. The percentage of weight loss has been calculated and is
presented in the following chart.
Wear of the tile has been measured using the profile of the wear track in 4 places around the
wearing track..
Example of wear track on Sample 3:
Average on 4 wears tracks taken along track of sample 3: 26’203 um2

Test study on Shank Chisel
The principle of tribology testing is to simulate to material in contact to investigate friction and wear.
Therefore any type of surface modification (painting, coating etc.) will influence the contact. The painting
will be removed with acetone.
Moreover, norm ASTM G133 that is defined to test these samples represent a Linearly Reciprocating
Ball-on-Flat Sliding Wear based on the following drawing. In the current shape, the sample cannot be
fixed correctly to test the tip.
Usually, the specimen to be investigated is at the bottom part and the ball specimen is provided by CSM
Instruments.
In  your  case,  the  “ball  specimen”  can  be  the  tip.  The flat specimen needs to be defined (materials ideally
in  contact  in  the  real  application)  because  it  isn’t  specified  in the norm.
In order to use the tip as the ball specimen, 2 solutions can be imagined. Either you can provide us the
tip without “surrounding”  or  we  will  have  to  cut  the  shank  chisel to keep mainly the tip. In this second
solution, we would need you support. Could you provide us the length of the tip or better the drawing with
internal dimensions of the tip, so that we would be able to saw the sample on the correct place?

APPENDIX 1
//// TRB Instrument
> Picture
> Principle of the TRB
A flat or a sphere shaped static partner is loaded on to the test sample with a precisely known
force. The static partner, (a pin or a ball), is mounted on a stiff lever, designed as a frictionless
force transducer. As the disk is rotating, resulting frictional forces acting between the pin and
the disk are measured by very small deflections of the lever using an LVDT sensor. Wear
coefficients for both the pin and sample are calculated from the volume of material lost during
a specific friction run. This simple method facilitates the determination and study of friction and
wear behavior of almost every solid state material combination, with varying time, contact
pressure, velocity, temperature, humidity, lubrication, etc.

The average value of friction coefficient varies between 0.68 and 0.75 and is stable for all samples. > Sample wear and wear track profile of ceramic tile Shank chisels wear has been defined as the lost weight during the test. Shank chisels were weighted before and after testing. The percentage of weight loss has been calculated and is presented in the following chart. Wear of the tile has been measured using the profile of the wear track in 4 places around the wearing track.. Therefore any type of surface modification (painting, coating etc.) will influence the contact. The painting will be removed with acetone. Moreover, norm ASTM G133 that is defined to test these samples represent a Linearly Reciprocating Ball-on-Flat Sliding Wear based on the following drawing. In the current shape, the sample cannot be fixed correctly to test the tip. Usually, the specimen to be investigated is at the bottom part and the ball specimen is provided by CSM Instruments. In  your  case,  the  “ball  specimen”  can  be  the  tip.  The flat specimen needs to be defined (materials ideally in  contact  in  the  real  application)  because  it  isn’t  specified  in the norm. In order to use the tip as the ball specimen, 2 solutions can be imagined. Either you can provide us the tip without “surrounding”  or  we  will  have  to  cut  the  shank  chisel to keep mainly the tip. In this second solution, we would need you support. Could you provide us the length of the tip or better the drawing with internal dimensions of the tip, so that we would be able to saw the sample on the correct place? The static partner, (a pin or a ball), is mounted on a stiff lever, designed as a frictionless force transducer. As the disk is rotating, resulting frictional forces acting between the pin and the disk are measured by very small deflections of the lever using an LVDT sensor. Wear coefficients for both the pin and sample are calculated from the volume of material lost during a specific friction run. This simple method facilitates the determination and study of friction and wear behavior of almost every solid state material combination, with varying time, contact pressure, velocity, temperature, humidity, lubrication, etc. How  do  you  pile  fast  &  cost  effec7vely?     Drilling  Cueng  Tools   Cueng  &  Abrasion  Wear  -‐  Tribology  Test   CSM Instruments SA Rue de la Gare 4 CH-2034 Peseux (Switzerland) T +41 32 557 5600 F +41 32 557 56 10 info@csm-instruments.com www.csm-instruments.com > Sample wear and wear track profile of ceramic tile Shank chisels wear has been defined as the lost weight during the test.
