The Optimist s Daughter By Eudora Welty
Death and dying is an inescapable process that all humans will face at some time in life, whether it is
the death of a friend or family member. After experiencing the death of a loved one comes the process
of grieving, which is part of coping with the loss of a loved one. The Optimist s Daughter is a novel
written by Eudora Welty, and it is based on a girl named Laurel McKelva Hand and her struggles with
grief. Laurel utilizes memory to overcome the grief she experiences, resulting from the loss of her
family. Clinton McKelva is a Judge and the father of Laurel McKelva. Laurel left the southern United
States for the North and later returns home to see her father before he dies. Being gone so long, Laurel
s remembrance of her father is blurry. Laurel s relationship with her dad is cold, and her last thoughts
of him are of his optimistic attitude and not introspective. Laurel s pain is followed, after Mr.
McKelva s passing, by the discovery of her father s library. She attempts to use the library, after his
death, to relive some of her and her dad s past through its contents (Gygax). An attempt to find
evidence of the judge s past in his desk fails. It becomes clear that her father s possessions have
already been removed. Instead of finding material pertaining to her father s past, Laurel comprehends
there is nothing left except the books on the shelves, which makes her reminisce over the sound of her
dad reading aloud. Ironically, not even this memory can bring the father

The Incredibles Analysis
The Incredibles(Bird, 2004), while more progressive in its message than previous Disney projects,
fails to fully embrace progressive ideas in its characters or how they affect the story. The Incredibles
when seen through its adherence to gender roles and inability to put real influence in its female
characters removes possible story strength when given to a female audience when put in comparison
with the story structure of Frozen(Buck Lee, 2013). In Frozen, the two most influential characters are
women and sisters in contrast to the focus being put on the patriarch of the family. Some may look at
The Incredibles as equally as progressive as Frozen given the family dynamic changes to put a more
equal weight of responsibility across gender lines, and allows the female characters to show strength
while the male characters can show weakness. When compared to Frozen, The Incredibles does not
fully embody progressive ideals. This is primarily due to the differing family dynamics in each film
and the dependence on patriarchal characters for substantive plot development in The Incredibles. In
comparing these two movies, one can clearly see that the ways these families interact is a symptom of
the progressive nature of the film with Helen doing no evolution towards progressive ideals, and much
development happening throughout the film in Frozen. After the superheroes are outcast, Helen turns
to the life of a stay at home mom, this backtracks from her status as a powerful female

An Analysis Of Ender s Things Fall Apart
Ender has been through a drastic amount, since he went to space. There are three things in particular
that have happened that made him change, grow or learn a lesson. The first being when Bonzo slapped
him in front of everyone, the second when Rat battled the Centipede army, last was the time Ender got
into a fight with 4 older boys. The first event happened when Bonzo slapped Ender for disobeying him
on page 95. Ender reacted by doing nothing. He did this because he knew Bonzo was wrong for doing
it and so did everyone else. This helped him grow because learned that he doesn t have to lash out
every time someone does something wrong. He also learned some other boys were on his side. Ender

Student Misconduct
Why is it necessary for a university to establish a code of conduct? The University of Florida s answer
is in the following quote, The University of Florida is an institution which encourages the intellectual
and personal growth of its students as scholars and citizens. As an educational institution, the
University recognizes that the transmission of knowledge, the pursuit of truth, and the development of
individuals require the free exchange of ideas, self expression, and the challenging of beliefs and
customs. In order to maintain an environment where these goals can be achieved safely and equitably,
the University promotes civility, respect, and integrity among all members of the community. As
stated in the Standard of Ethical Conduct, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That also means it has become even easier to discover when others are using someone else s work in
their documents and to verify whether they are properly citing where the source material came from. It
is a far less risky option to make the extra effort of giving credit where it is due. This activity is a
direct violation of the University Of Phoenix Code Of Conduct/Code of Academic Integrity. B. Martin
sums it up nicely in the Journal of Information Ethics: plagiarism is much more common among both
students and scholars than usually recognized and it is a serious offense against scholarships and
should be condemned and penalized.
How do you catch a cheating student participating in an online environment? As defined in the
University of Phoenix 2007 2008 Online Master Catalog, cheating is using or attempting to use
unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise (University). However,
without physically interfacing with the student, how does a teacher ensure a student is turning in
assignments that are homegrown within the mind of the writer? With the advent of the internet,
information is rampant and often unchecked for credibility. In the same instance, it is a Mecca of
information potentially influencing the personal education of billions. Coupling the internet with an
online academic environment, there is a potential for cheating. Students are less likely to cheat if they
are educated, monitored

The Usage Of Visual Aids
Prophet Muhammad ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ was the greatest teacher to have ever lived. Today s methods of
teaching can be seen in many of the Prophet s ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ sayings and actions. One such method
was the use of repetition in order to reinforce the important details of what is being taught. Another
method that is used regularly and effectively by teachers is the use of visual aids. A third method that
we use today that is from the Prophet ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ is the usage of analogies to help the listener
understand better. The Prophet ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ was the best example to mankind and we should strive
to be like him.
Repetition is a method that we see often in many of the hadith of Prophet Muhammad ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬.
One example of his use of repetition is in the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah ‫عنه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫رضي‬‎
. He said, A
man came to the Prophet and said, O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of
my good companionship? The Prophet (‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫)صلى‬ said: Your mother. The man said, Then who?
The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your
mother. The man asked again, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, 2706)
He ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ repeated your mother three times to show the importance of respecting her because
of how much hardship she went through for her child and didn t expect anything in return. Just as the
Prophet ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ used repetition as an

Introduction Businesses are established with the sole reason to provide a product or service to a
customer with the intend to make a profit. The amount of time, effort, and resources spend should
generate a profit. Then, the profit depends on its effectiveness in performing these activities
efficiently, so that the amount that the customer is willing to pay of the products exceeds the cost of

(2009). Within technology and the value system, this called for an emphasis on media relations to
disseminate information to the local community and its leaders. Solid communication practices, i.e.
strategic communications, was of the utmost importance to gain the respect and acceptance of the
population. Perhaps by obtaining the acceptance of the local population, Rio Tinto was able to
mitigate any threats from new entrants into the market at the specific location as well; allowing
control of one of the five forces that shape industry competition to remain in check. Finally, helping to
form the International Council on Mining and Metals should have allowed them strategic power over
existing competitors (another of the 5 forces).
Mini Case # 4 General Electric General Electric s (GE) challenge was to create a new business in
sustainability. GE saw profitable business opportunity in helping companies save energy. To mitigate
the Rivalry among Existing Competitors , GE s focused on bringing new capacity and was still able to
produce pressure on prices; mitigating negative price competition. As Porter mentioned: Rivalry is
especially destructive to profitability if it gravitates solely to price because price competition transfers
profits directly form an industry to its customers.

God Vs Atheism Argument
The video, God vs. Atheism: Which is more rational, doesn t make sense to me. It starts by saying
faith s a belief in God, but towards the end it says God doesn t require faith. If Faith is a belief in God,
how does God not require faith? It says Atheism requires faith but Atheists don t believe in God. How
would Atheists have a belief in God, Faith? It says faith and reason are opposites which I agree with
but I feel God has to do with faith and Atheists think they are being reasonable because they feel
science has proved God impossible, but just like the video said, the belief in God is far more rational
than Atheism. Logic can show there s a God. Nothing can come from nothing. Things move and we
know something must cause that movement. Catholics believe God is the unmoved mover. Just

In this, it says things don t happen by chance and most natural things lack knowledge. There are four
ways atheists go at explaining this It had to be this way, it s only a coincidence, it just happened to be
this way, and winning the cosmic lottery, but it s easy to prove this wrong because our proof states
nothing happens by chance and these examples would all be chance. To say something happened by
luck or chance honestly just sounds uneducated to me. This being said, the scenario that best goes with
our proof is You are at a coffee shop after class discussing the Big Bang Theory for an upcoming test
and another student asks: If the Big Bang caused the universe, why would Christians believe in a God
causing the universe? Moreover, if God caused it, who/what caused God? Belief in God is reasonable.
The Atheists don t think God s realistic because Catholic believe God was the beginning, the one who
created everything, but science says the Big Bang was. Atheists also feel someone had to have created
God. The world s 13.7 billion years old, but God is 2018 years old. Therefore, God didn t create or

John Stuart Mill Is A Man Essay
John Stuart Mill is a man that has been immortalized by the public as both a genius, and a man before
his own time. He has made countless contributions to philosophy, ethics, economics, and politics; he
was a man not afraid to speak his mind, often to a candour level that become expected of Mill s works
(Browne 274). This frankness became attached to Mill s, as he was typically swift and cunning in the
disablement of opposing views and logical backing of his own. However, because of this, and his
often debated stances, Mill often faced scrutiny over his beliefs, from authors such as Matthew
Browne. His opponents were often quick to say how much it pains them to argue against Mill s point
of view. As Browne said, To any one who regards the genius and character of Mr. Mill with such
serious homage as the writer of these lines, it is a task of peculiar difficulty, and also a considerable
pain, to express, and especially to express in public, strong though qualified dissent from his opinions
upon an important question (Browne 273). However, before we indulge into both the greatness and
questioning of Mill s work it is important to understand how this man came to be. I remember one day
asking my father why it was that he pushed me so hard and seemed to always expect the best out of
me. Upon saying this I saw a softness enter his eyes, one that I had seen before, but in some way one
that made me feel sadden as I suddenly saw the age enter his face. I knew he was going to say

higher profit potential, little control by the government, less financial audit and defined specification.
There are some disadvantages including risk assumption relates to financial and technical

Short Run And Long Run Effects
Short Run and Long Run Effects In the short run, both global demand and supply of oil are relatively
inelastic because it is difficult for them to make large adjustments to price changes in a short period of
time. When oil price rises, oil consumers, such as manufacturing firms and households, may not be
able to reduce their demand for oil immediately. For example, individuals still need to drive to work
and manufacturing firms with long term contracts still need to run machinery to meet target output.
Similarly, an increase in oil price would not stimulate oil supply in the short run. Additional supply
generally requires the exploration of new reserves and construction of new infrastructure for delivery
which require substantial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Simultaneously, traditional manufacturing sectors would suffer from rising input costs and reduced
competitiveness in the international market. The net effect would be a decrease in total real exports.
Moreover, the reallocation of resources, labor and capital would occur in favor of oil industry. The
extent of these long run effects would depend on the magnitude of initial price shock and the duration
of price increases. Impacts of Rising Oil Prices on Canadian Output A significant increase in oil price
would have little impact on Canadian overall output but large regional and sectoral implications. The
oil producing provinces would benefit from rising income while the oil consuming ones would suffer
due to the higher cost of living and production. This would also lead to reallocation of capital and
labor across energy and other industries. Potential impacts are expected to be more pronounced in the
long run than in the short run because of relative inelasticity of oil demand and supply in the short run.
Canada is the world s fifth largest oil producer, with daily production of more than 3.6 million barrels
in 2015 (Statistics Canada). Despite large national production, Canada only produces about 5% of
world s total daily production and thus does not have large influencing power on the international oil
price. Since February 2016, oil price has shown an upward trend. It soared from USD$29.44 per barrel
in February 2016 to USD$54.45 per barrel in February

Avatar Film Analysis
Most of the science fiction works contain a crucial message that the writer wishes to convey to the
viewers. There are two categories of film message, one is positive and the other is negative. A positive
message is one that is expected to have favourable outcome to the audience, and continuously aiming
to promote better societal changes. In contrast, a negative message is one that could deliver threats or
unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact on the normal order of
the society. This essay will argue that if the message contains positive elements, then it is not a bad
sign to embed science fiction works with a message. First, this essay will suggest that the well

In addition, the film focus mainly on a human protagonist name Jake, and narrate his transformation
from a human to an alien, which is done through a human developed technology that injects human
DNA into the alien bodies. After Jake s transformation, the scene opens another implicit message:
aliens are to be forcibly removed from their planet to create space for human activity (Veracini, 2011,
p. 357). For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack becoming
a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message saying that
human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This message seemingly
gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for the audience. Hence,
when a film includes well integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality to the entire plot
whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general audience could be
attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene to the next.
Moreover, the positive messages embedded in science fiction works can have powerful influence on
the audience and the society, both locally and globally. In particular, most of the messages embedded
are prompted by the past events of world history or by the contemporary social phenomena, and

Shunning in the United States today seems like a usual to people today. It usually is done to the
popular or famous groups but sometimes is done to ordinary people who have done something

the main competitors in these races is Lance Armstrong. He is also one of the main drug users in these

To start with Vietnam was in the control of the French, they had gained control of it in 1883. They

In 1940 Japan demanded the right to place Vietnam under military occupation. The French could not

By 1940 two parties had been formed; the Indochinese communist party and the national party. The
two parties united and formed the Vietminh. The Vietminh was formed to create opposition to the

At the Geneva conference in 1954 the Americans were critical of the French for being peace at any

* France to give independence to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam

* A strip of land separating the two sides to be a demilitarised zone
* Free and Democratic elections to be held in 1956 to reunite North and South Vietnam under one

The US didn t sign this agreement as they saw it to be like defeat for them. US critics said the
agreement had tilted the balance of world power towards communism. This was seen as very bad for
the US as they were totally focused on stopping the spread of communism across the world. They saw
a big threat in what they named the Domino theory . This meant that if one Asian country such as
Thailand or Malaya became communist its neighbours would follow and spread it throughout the East.
However the new ruler of the south, Ngo Dinh Diem, refused to hold the 1956 elections in Vietnam.
He was unwilling to be the puppet rules that the Americans wanted but as he was against communism
and was actively stopping the spread of it the Americans had no choice but to support him.

Depiction Of Beauty Has On Young Girl s Individual Self...
Current Study The purpose of this study is to investigate the depiction of beauty in animated Disney
Princess movies and consequences the portrayal of beauty has on young girl s individual self esteem.
This study includes one general hypothesis. The hypothesis states that young girls who idealize the
beauty standards of Disney Princesses will have lower self esteem than young girls who do not
idealize their standard of beauty. I expected that young girls who have the desire to mimic Disney
Princesses will have lower self esteem because the beauty standards of Disney Princess are impossible
to obtain; therefore, their perception of beauty will become extremely faltered, which will lead to a
decrease in their self esteem levels and a negative perception of their body image compared to Disney
Princesses. Young girls with higher expectations regarding beauty standards, self esteems will be
negatively impacted due to the beauty goodness stereotype presented in animated Disney films, for
Disney films portray beauty over all human attributes, which skews young girl s perception of beauty
and their overall self image. This study is similar to an experiment conducted by Bazzini et al.
In Bazzini et al. study, the researchers assessed whether children can be influenced by a single
exposure to animated Disney films that are either stereotypical in its portrayal of characters or non
stereotypical in its portrayal of the physical attractiveness stereotype, and if the physical

sucking their toes, and rolling over. Whereas a child who is between the age of 24 months and 36
months uses fine motor play which allows them to play with Play doh and put together puzzles. Social
play is playing with a responsive human playmate. This could be the child s mother, father or
caregiver. Pretend/symbolic play usually emerges after the first birthday, when children behave in a
nonliteral way, acting as if they were performing familiar routines, such as eating, going to sleep, or
washing their face (Gross, 195). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This topic is interesting to me as it amazes me how as we grow playing takes different forms to us. It
is also interesting because as we get older we can give meaning to objects making playing more
intentional. Playing also caught my attention as before reading about this topic in our book I would
have never correlated pointing and naming games as mothers using it as a way to teach their child, I
use to believe they would do this just to have fun with their child. I was interested in this topic as well
because I never knew play was different in cultures I always believed it meant the same thing. It also
interested me as when I get older and have kids of my own I will use play to teach, a process known as

Andrew Carnegie And The Transformation Of The Steel Industry
American Economic Development
Andrew Carnegie and the Transformation of the Steel Industry
November 2014
Before Andrew Carnegie s influence in the steel industry, steel was as an expensive product. It was
used for tools and weapons, all large scale metal operations were created with cast iron. The Bessemer
process was the cheap way to produce steel. The process enabled the mass production of steel for
industrial types of usage. Essentially the process breaks down impurities in the iron by way of open
furnace extraction. This oxidizes the steel while it is run through molten metal. Steel has been
common in production since the Bessemer process was discovered and perfected in the late 1850s.
Andrew Carnegie made his fortune in the steel industry. He was one of the first to practice the vertical
integration management technique which drastically reduced his costs of production. Along with the
vertical integration his honing of the Bessemer process created somewhat of a monopoly in the area. I
say this because Edgar Thompson Steel Works provided permits for Carnegie to purchase a number of
nearby steel mills. The steel industry in the United States changed drastically from the early 1800s to
1900s; the man responsible for the mass production was Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie is one of the
wealthiest men to live on this earth; much of that wealth came from Carnegie Steel Company, later
U.S. Steel.
Prior to the application of the Bessemer process, Britain had no way of reducing

Film Analysis Of The Film Easy Rider
Easy Rider Analysis America in the 1960 s was a time of turbulence and chaos. A nation divided in the
midst of the counterculture movement that was sparked by a generational split and fueled by the
Vietnam War, America was struggling for change. The New Hollywood took these issues into account
and translated them onscreen. Films of the New Hollywood centered around the protagonist, often
depicting them as an anti hero, who suffered from alienation and conflict within society. In the film
Easy Rider these themes are exemplified through its reinvention of the Western genre. Dennis Hopper
uses this film as a way to convey ideas of the Western by placing into a modern setting that embodies
the feeling of 1960 s America. The Western in Easy Rider is depicted primarily through the conflict
between the rural and urban environments displayed onscreen. Throughout the film the countryside
and city are constantly being compared through the narrative, the cinematography, and the dialogue
that is presented to the audience. Laszlo Kovac s vivid and expansive camerawork showcases the the
sprawling mountains and endless deserts that are reminiscent of the Western Frontier. The rural
territory that Wyatt and Billy occupy during their breaks is almost idyllic whether they are huddled
around a campfire or sitting in an open field, a reminder of the Western is brought to the surface. The
farmer s ranch and hippie commune that is eventually seen in the film are shown as isolated
settlements, and the heart of the wilderness lies within them. Wyatt first praises the farmer for living
off the land, and says Not every man that can live off the land, you know. You do your own thing in
your own time. You should be proud. He later on conveys his belief that the commune will be able to
produce crops even in the empty field that is seen. Like these people, Billy and Wyatt have rejected
society seeking out their own freedom, living as outlaws like many western heros do. When Wyatt and
Billy are rejected from motels, that is symbolic of the civilized world that they are no longer apart of,
rather they must retreat to the wild to set up camp, often gathering

P Vulgaris Lab Report
After precisely conducting the experiment and tabulating the results, data for Paraquat toxicity upon P.
vulgaris plants can be interpreted over several different parameters. The parameters by which Paraquat
toxicity was examined within this experiment involve visual observations, x ray diffraction,
chlorophyll concentrations, protein concentrations, and lastly malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations
on a per mg of protein basis. As stated before Paraquat is very widely used herbicide known to
produce superoxide anions leading to chloroplast membrane damage and ultimately a variety of
adverse effects upon the host organism, in this case P. vulgaris (Chia et al., 1982). The initial signs of
Paraquat toxicity were immensely noticeable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
vulgaris plants, via the formation of a standard curve prepared using varying concentrations of bovine
serum albumin (BSA) solution. Following absorbance readings of the various BSA solutions, they
were plotted against their concentrations providing an indirect measure for determining protein
concentrations of the plant samples within the assay tubes, and through further calculations the sample
protein concentration. The mean protein concentration for the control group was calculated to be 3.34
± 1.30 mg/mL, while the mean treated group concentration was 2.01 ± 1.26 mg/mL. These results
similarly like the chlorophyll results correlate with the literature articles, as a reduced protein content
within the Paraquat treated plants can be expected to some extent (Chia et al., 1981). This reduction in
protein concentration is the result of those superoxide anions produced by Paraquat, disrupting the
chloroplast membranes and allowing for intracellular components including some proteins to leak out,
hence the decrease in protein concentration in comparison to the non treated plants (Qian et al., 2009).
A slight outlier may exist within the treated groups protein concentrations as one of the groups
provided a negative value for protein concentration which is not valid, but even after exclusion of that
data value, results are still supportive of the expected outcome. Though these results support the claim
of Paraquat toxicity causing membrane deterioration and leakiness, protein concentration values are
rather more purposeful when used to analyze malondialdehyde (MDA) values on per mg of protein

Comparing The Tanakh, The Talmud, And The Mishnah
The Tanakh, the Talmud, and the Mishnah are three very vital pieces in Judaism. They are very
important collections of Scriptures that are central to the Jewish way of life and practices. The
Tankakh includes the teachings and stories of Judaism; the Torah, the Book of Ruth, Ecclesiastes, et
cetera. The Talmud and the Mishnah are collections of interpretations of the teachings given in the
Torah and other teachings. Various rabbis give their input on what Yawheh truly meant in his
commandments and try to teach other Jews how they should follow them. The Tanakh, Talmud, and
Mishnah are all central pieces to what makes Judaism what it is.
The Tanakh is the collection of the scriptures of Judaism. It is commonly referred to as the Jewish Old
Testament or the Jewish Bible, however these names are not the ones used by the Jewish people. Their
Scripture that is comparable to that of the Christian Bible is the Tanakh. The name is made from an

One is the Y rushalmi and the other is the Bavli. The Y rushalmi is the Jerusalem Talmud which comes
from Israel. The Bavli is the Babylonian Talmud which is the edited version of the Y rushalmi. Today,
the Babylonian Talmud is more well known than the Jerusalem Talmud and is the one that is more
widely used in Judaism. The Talmud is also split up into two separate works; the Mishnah and the
Gemara (Isaacs). The Mishnah is a collection of the opinions and interpretations of rabbis on Jewish
laws. Those rabbis who share their opinion in the Mishnah are known as Tannaim which in Aramaic
means teachers. The main purpose of the Misnah is to add additional information to the
commandments and to clarify them as well. The Mishnah serves as a guide for those who are confused
by the laws they are given in the Torah. In the Mishnah, the rabbis interpret and explain the
commandments as best they can

Abstract From theoretical viewpoints, analyses of consumer motivation have been applied to the
shopping and the tourism industry for decades. However, little research has been done on night
markets or street vendors. According to the Statistical Information of Taiwan Tourism Bureau (2002

There are three purposes for setting up Tourist Night Markets: 1. To stimulate local business trade and
to increase regional economic benefits. 2. To provide an evening venue for the local people to shop. 3.
To convert some illegal vendors into legal ones. In addition, from a shopper s perspective, it is
expected that the establishment of Tourist Night Markets can reduce some unpleasant shopping
experiences often encountered when visiting the regular hawkers. From the traditional perspective of
marketing s 4P s (McCarthy, 1960), the characteristics of Tourist Night Markets are as follows: (1)
Product the variety of goods and services is wide in Tourist Night Markets. According to the Taipei
City Government s Market Committee (Wang, 2000, as cited in Yang, 2000), over 60% of the vendors
sell food and drinks. The majority of others sell groceries and garments. (2) Price the pricing of each
vendor in the Tourist Night Market is reasonable and allows shoppers to bargain no matter whether
with stationary vendors or stores. (3) Place like the formal traders, vendors in Tourist Night Market
can be found in a fixed location where shoppers must go to buy. Thus, contrary to Arellano s research
(1994), high mobility is not a primary characteristic of Tourist Night Markets vendors. All the vendors
or operators have a fixed space to conduct their business. Location wise, it is mandatory that a huge

Crisis Response Time for American Red Cross Essay
(1)
Since the writing of this case, the American Red Cross (ARC) is on record as having conceptually
addressed its infrastructure and operational hurdles. However, very few strides have been made to
reverse stakeholder perception crisis response time, relief dispatch strategies, and the ethical dilemmas
plaguing the organization. Governmental mandates that streamlined the board and that established
accounting /reporting parameters have done little to modify the organizations operational culture.
Since 2002, the organization has had seven CEO s. This high turnover has prompted concern from
stakeholders and government officials. Records indicate the organization now has approximately

These re occurring incidents have shaken the confidence of stakeholders and have begun to have an
adverse impact on donor perceptions of the integrity and validity of the efforts promoted by ARC
(Welch, 2012).
In March 2012, local leaders and the United Way demanded answers from Red Cross Panhandle
Chapter regarding the distribution of $282K that was raised from wildfire relief donations. These
funds were raised in 2010 and by the time the inquiries began many of the 2010 ARC staff in this
chapter had been replaced under the government restructure. As such, new staff found itself in a
quandary as it sought to address the questions and accusations being hurled (Welch, 2012). The
tangible numbers that were eventually conveyed indicated that of the $282k raised, $119k was
actually given to victims and $60K was used to restock inventories. This account still left $103K
unaccounted for. The next speculation that surfaced was revolved around why the funds were not
distributed for the purpose for which it was collected? A spokesperson for the local ARC chapter
communicated that, personally, he [did] not like this [situation] and he acknowledged the top two
previous chapter officials made errors. It was noted that these same two officials left the company in
May of 2011 for what ARC labeled as personal reasons . In response to the local chapter s inability to

The Jacobin Uprising
Within the new French Legislative Assembly, the onetime allies turned political rivals the Girondins
and the Jacobins competed for power. Both began in favor of a French republic, but differed in their
methods of obtaining that goal. The Girondins favored a slower peaceful path to abolishing the
monarchy, which the radical Robespierre referred to as ineffectual (Robespierre 1910). The Jacobins
favored the swiftness of violence (Ibid). Following the suspension of the monarchy, National
Guardsmen were sent to prisons across Paris searching for traitors, (McPhee 2012). Anyone adamantly
pro revolution was deemed against it by the radical Jacobin group known as the Mountain.

Lenin s cries for the Soviet to seize control of the government were therefore intended mainly to
arouse indignation in both the Provisional Government and in his less radical Soviet allies (Ibid).
Accordingly, although Lenin arrived in Petrograd in April 1917, the violence marking his rise to
power did not begin until mid June (Ibid). The Provisional Government s latest attack against
Germany was a military disaster and the army refused to follow further orders to the front (Riordan
1964). Soldiers and laborers alike started violent protests, demanding all power to the Soviets, (Ibid).
Lenin and the Bolshevik party disowned the violence and the protests stopped shortly thereafter (Ibid).
Nevertheless, Lenin was forced to flee the country while Leon Trotsky was arrested for the violent
revolts which marked the July Days (Wade 2000).
During the French Revolution, violence once again marked a distinct change in tone. The final
severing with the Legislative Assembly s final severing with the former monarchical government
occurred on January 21, 1793 when a narrow majority vote ordered Louis XVI s execution (Doyle
2002). Ironically, Robespierre voted in favor in spite of his previous opposition to the death penalty.
But as the Reign of Terror to com rolled out of control, he became more vocally supportive of
guillotine executions for traitors to the

The Taste Of Food Is The Ultimate Weapon Of War
Food is an imperative element of society that has continually brought people together all around the
world. From a BBQ in East Tennessee to eating Chow Mein in China, food holds a deep cultural
meaning and power. It has the means to be a weapon of war, and is a force of development. It is an
organizer and a tool to bring people together, and can be influenced by our social status. Needless to
say, as this world moves into a more modern way of life, the traditional ways of living are visually
fading away. As stated in the previous paragraph, food can be used as a powerful weapon of war. For
example, during WWII Americans all over the country were being asked to ration the food they eat.

In the book, Sociology on the Menu: An Invitation to the Study of Food and Society, Alan
Beardsworth and Teresa Keil explain that, For a start, traditional food systems are characterized by
patterns of local, relatively small scale production. They also go onto say that the modern food system
is made up of five parts which differentiate them from the traditional food society. Firstly, there is a
highly specialized, industrial system of food production. (Sociology on the menu) From which we can
derive that most of the food production for the modern market is concealed. Secondly, distribution is
through the commercial market; whatever our status, as long as we have the money, food is readily
accessible. (Sociology on the Menu) A long as one has the means, going to the grocery store will
never be a problem, especially living in the United States. Thirdly...visit to any supermarket
demonstrates the opportunities for consumption and emphasizes choice and variety, and this is largely
true for smaller food outlets as well. (Sociology on the Menu) Fourthly, since the markets for buying
and selling food and international, even global, shortages are rare. However, that is not to say that
shortages do not occur in particular places for particular groups, only that these arise from social and
political constraints rather than from the issues related to the availability of

The Hero with a Thousand Faces
Prologue The Monomyth
Myth and Dream
Myths are universal and transcendent through time; many ancient myths are seen recreated in modern
times. The author uses Oedipus as a way of comparing myth to psychology. Dreams have also played
a major role in civilization; the people who could interpret dreams can understand and create myths.
Dream is the personalized myth (19).
Tragedy and Comedy People have always been fascinated with the tragedy and death of others.
Tragedy is the realizing of the ultimate truth of life, and comedy is finding the joys of life. Mythology
can stem from both tragedy and comedy.
The Hero and the God The author uses the story of the Buddha to state the journey a hero has to go
through to achieve their powers/ability. The hero leaves his environment, learns or develops, and then
returns to spread what he loved. All hero stories follow the same guidelines.
The World Naval
The World Naval is the birthplace of everything important in the hero story; it is the center point of the
world. It can either create of destroy life and is often represented by a special symbol.

  • 2. The Optimist s Daughter By Eudora Welty Death and dying is an inescapable process that all humans will face at some time in life, whether it is the death of a friend or family member. After experiencing the death of a loved one comes the process of grieving, which is part of coping with the loss of a loved one. The Optimist s Daughter is a novel written by Eudora Welty, and it is based on a girl named Laurel McKelva Hand and her struggles with grief. Laurel utilizes memory to overcome the grief she experiences, resulting from the loss of her family. Clinton McKelva is a Judge and the father of Laurel McKelva. Laurel left the southern United States for the North and later returns home to see her father before he dies. Being gone so long, Laurel s remembrance of her father is blurry. Laurel s relationship with her dad is cold, and her last thoughts of him are of his optimistic attitude and not introspective. Laurel s pain is followed, after Mr. McKelva s passing, by the discovery of her father s library. She attempts to use the library, after his death, to relive some of her and her dad s past through its contents (Gygax). An attempt to find evidence of the judge s past in his desk fails. It becomes clear that her father s possessions have already been removed. Instead of finding material pertaining to her father s past, Laurel comprehends there is nothing left except the books on the shelves, which makes her reminisce over the sound of her dad reading aloud. Ironically, not even this memory can bring the father ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Incredibles Analysis The Incredibles(Bird, 2004), while more progressive in its message than previous Disney projects, fails to fully embrace progressive ideas in its characters or how they affect the story. The Incredibles when seen through its adherence to gender roles and inability to put real influence in its female characters removes possible story strength when given to a female audience when put in comparison with the story structure of Frozen(Buck Lee, 2013). In Frozen, the two most influential characters are women and sisters in contrast to the focus being put on the patriarch of the family. Some may look at The Incredibles as equally as progressive as Frozen given the family dynamic changes to put a more equal weight of responsibility across gender lines, and allows the female characters to show strength while the male characters can show weakness. When compared to Frozen, The Incredibles does not fully embody progressive ideals. This is primarily due to the differing family dynamics in each film and the dependence on patriarchal characters for substantive plot development in The Incredibles. In comparing these two movies, one can clearly see that the ways these families interact is a symptom of the progressive nature of the film with Helen doing no evolution towards progressive ideals, and much development happening throughout the film in Frozen. After the superheroes are outcast, Helen turns to the life of a stay at home mom, this backtracks from her status as a powerful female ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Student Misconduct Why is it necessary for a university to establish a code of conduct? The University of Florida s answer is in the following quote, The University of Florida is an institution which encourages the intellectual and personal growth of its students as scholars and citizens. As an educational institution, the University recognizes that the transmission of knowledge, the pursuit of truth, and the development of individuals require the free exchange of ideas, self expression, and the challenging of beliefs and customs. That also means it has become even easier to discover when others are using someone else s work in their documents and to verify whether they are properly citing where the source material came from. It is a far less risky option to make the extra effort of giving credit where it is due. This activity is a direct violation of the University Of Phoenix Code Of Conduct/Code of Academic Integrity. B. Martin sums it up nicely in the Journal of Information Ethics: plagiarism is much more common among both students and scholars than usually recognized and it is a serious offense against scholarships and should be condemned and penalized. How do you catch a cheating student participating in an online environment? As defined in the University of Phoenix 2007 2008 Online Master Catalog, cheating is using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise (University). However, without physically interfacing with the student, how does a teacher ensure a student is turning in assignments that are homegrown within the mind of the writer? With the advent of the internet, information is rampant and often unchecked for credibility. In the same instance, it is a Mecca of information potentially influencing the personal education of billions. Coupling the internet with an online academic environment, there is a potential for cheating. Students are less likely to cheat if they are educated, monitored ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Usage Of Visual Aids Prophet Muhammad ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ was the greatest teacher to have ever lived. Today s methods of teaching can be seen in many of the Prophet s ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ sayings and actions. One such method was the use of repetition in order to reinforce the important details of what is being taught. Another method that is used regularly and effectively by teachers is the use of visual aids. A third method that we use today that is from the Prophet ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ is the usage of analogies to help the listener understand better. The Prophet ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ was the best example to mankind and we should strive to be like him. Repetition is a method that we see often in many of the hadith of Prophet Muhammad ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬. One example of his use of repetition is in the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah ‫عنه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫رضي‬‎ . He said, A man came to the Prophet and said, O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet (‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫)صلى‬ said: Your mother. The man said, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, Then who? The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, 2706) He ‫وسلم‬ ‫عليه‬ ‫هللا‬ ‫صلى‬ repeated your mother three times to show the importance of respecting her because of how much hardship she went through for her child and didn t expect anything in return. Perhaps by obtaining the acceptance of the local population, Rio Tinto was able to mitigate any threats from new entrants into the market at the specific location as well; allowing control of one of the five forces that shape industry competition to remain in check. Finally, helping to form the International Council on Mining and Metals should have allowed them strategic power over existing competitors (another of the 5 forces). To mitigate the Rivalry among Existing Competitors , GE s focused on bringing new capacity and was still able to produce pressure on prices; mitigating negative price competition. • 9. God Vs Atheism Argument The video, God vs. Atheism: Which is more rational, doesn t make sense to me. It starts by saying faith s a belief in God, but towards the end it says God doesn t require faith. If Faith is a belief in God, how does God not require faith? It says Atheism requires faith but Atheists don t believe in God. How would Atheists have a belief in God, Faith? It says faith and reason are opposites which I agree with but I feel God has to do with faith and Atheists think they are being reasonable because they feel science has proved God impossible, but just like the video said, the belief in God is far more rational than Atheism. To say something happened by luck or chance honestly just sounds uneducated to me. Moreover, if God caused it, who/what caused God? Belief in God is reasonable. • 10. John Stuart Mill Is A Man Essay John Stuart Mill is a man that has been immortalized by the public as both a genius, and a man before his own time. He has made countless contributions to philosophy, ethics, economics, and politics; he was a man not afraid to speak his mind, often to a candour level that become expected of Mill s works (Browne 274). This frankness became attached to Mill s, as he was typically swift and cunning in the disablement of opposing views and logical backing of his own. However, because of this, and his often debated stances, Mill often faced scrutiny over his beliefs, from authors such as Matthew Browne. His opponents were often quick to say how much it pains them to argue against Mill s point of view. As Browne said, To any one who regards the genius and character of Mr. Mill with such serious homage as the writer of these lines, it is a task of peculiar difficulty, and also a considerable pain, to express, and especially to express in public, strong though qualified dissent from his opinions upon an important question (Browne 273). However, before we indulge into both the greatness and questioning of Mill s work it is important to understand how this man came to be. I remember one day asking my father why it was that he pushed me so hard and seemed to always expect the best out of me. Upon saying this I saw a softness enter his eyes, one that I had seen before, but in some way one that made me feel sadden as I suddenly saw the age enter his face. I knew he was going to say ... • 14. Short Run And Long Run Effects Short Run and Long Run Effects In the short run, both global demand and supply of oil are relatively inelastic because it is difficult for them to make large adjustments to price changes in a short period of time. When oil price rises, oil consumers, such as manufacturing firms and households, may not be able to reduce their demand for oil immediately. For example, individuals still need to drive to work and manufacturing firms with long term contracts still need to run machinery to meet target output. Similarly, an increase in oil price would not stimulate oil supply in the short run. Additional supply generally requires the exploration of new reserves and construction of new infrastructure for delivery which require substantial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Simultaneously, traditional manufacturing sectors would suffer from rising input costs and reduced competitiveness in the international market. The net effect would be a decrease in total real exports. Moreover, the reallocation of resources, labor and capital would occur in favor of oil industry. The extent of these long run effects would depend on the magnitude of initial price shock and the duration of price increases. Impacts of Rising Oil Prices on Canadian Output A significant increase in oil price would have little impact on Canadian overall output but large regional and sectoral implications. The oil producing provinces would benefit from rising income while the oil consuming ones would suffer due to the higher cost of living and production. This would also lead to reallocation of capital and labor across energy and other industries. Potential impacts are expected to be more pronounced in the long run than in the short run because of relative inelasticity of oil demand and supply in the short run. Canada is the world s fifth largest oil producer, with daily production of more than 3.6 million barrels in 2015 (Statistics Canada). Despite large national production, Canada only produces about 5% of world s total daily production and thus does not have large influencing power on the international oil price. In contrast, a negative message is one that could deliver threats or unpleasant information to the audience, which could have significant impact on the normal order of the society. For the climax part of the film, the director establishes a passage that describes Jack becoming a native of Pandora, and the director again aims to introduce the audience with a message saying that human power against corporate force as to conserve our natural environment. This message seemingly gives audience a wonderful twist of the plot and is quite thought provoking for the audience. Hence, when a film includes well integrated messages, it adds another layer of quality to the entire plot whereby all the elements of the plot becomes more meaningful, and the general audience could be attuned with the rhythm of the film because there is a logical flow from one scene to the next. This is what the agreement was; * France to give independence to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam * Vietnam to be temporarily split in two by a partition along the 17th parallel * A strip of land separating the two sides to be a demilitarised zone * Free and Democratic elections to be held in 1956 to reunite North and South Vietnam under one leader. The US didn t sign this agreement as they saw it to be like defeat for them. US critics said the agreement had tilted the balance of world power towards communism. This was seen as very bad for the US as they were totally focused on stopping the spread of communism across the world. They saw a big threat in what they named the Domino theory . This meant that if one Asian country such as Thailand or Malaya became communist its neighbours would follow and spread it throughout the East. • 21. Depiction Of Beauty Has On Young Girl s Individual Self... Current Study The purpose of this study is to investigate the depiction of beauty in animated Disney Princess movies and consequences the portrayal of beauty has on young girl s individual self esteem. This study includes one general hypothesis. The hypothesis states that young girls who idealize the beauty standards of Disney Princesses will have lower self esteem than young girls who do not idealize their standard of beauty. I expected that young girls who have the desire to mimic Disney Princesses will have lower self esteem because the beauty standards of Disney Princess are impossible to obtain; therefore, their perception of beauty will become extremely faltered, which will lead to a decrease in their self esteem levels and a negative perception of their body image compared to Disney Princesses. Young girls with higher expectations regarding beauty standards, self esteems will be negatively impacted due to the beauty goodness stereotype presented in animated Disney films, for Disney films portray beauty over all human attributes, which skews young girl s perception of beauty and their overall self image. This study is similar to an experiment conducted by Bazzini et al. • 22. Social Play Analysis A). Play as defined in our book is an activity that is intrinsically motivated, focused on means rather than ends, different from purely exploratory behavior, nonliteral, and free from externally applies rules (Gross, 225). There are different types of play such as play with objects, social play, and pretend symbolic play. Play with objects depends on age for example a child between the age of birth to 4 months uses exploratory type of play, repetitive motor movements such kicking legs, reaching for or sucking their toes, and rolling over. Whereas a child who is between the age of 24 months and 36 months uses fine motor play which allows them to play with Play doh and put together puzzles. Social play is playing with a responsive human playmate. This could be the child s mother, father or caregiver. Pretend/symbolic play usually emerges after the first birthday, when children behave in a nonliteral way, acting as if they were performing familiar routines, such as eating, going to sleep, or washing their face (Gross, 195). ... • 23. Andrew Carnegie And The Transformation Of The Steel Industry American Economic Development Andrew Carnegie and the Transformation of the Steel Industry November 2014 Before Andrew Carnegie s influence in the steel industry, steel was as an expensive product. It was used for tools and weapons, all large scale metal operations were created with cast iron. The Bessemer process was the cheap way to produce steel. The process enabled the mass production of steel for industrial types of usage. Essentially the process breaks down impurities in the iron by way of open furnace extraction. This oxidizes the steel while it is run through molten metal. Steel has been common in production since the Bessemer process was discovered and perfected in the late 1850s. Andrew Carnegie made his fortune in the steel industry. He was one of the first to practice the vertical integration management technique which drastically reduced his costs of production. Along with the vertical integration his honing of the Bessemer process created somewhat of a monopoly in the area. I say this because Edgar Thompson Steel Works provided permits for Carnegie to purchase a number of nearby steel mills. The steel industry in the United States changed drastically from the early 1800s to 1900s; the man responsible for the mass production was Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie is one of the wealthiest men to live on this earth; much of that wealth came from Carnegie Steel Company, later U.S. Steel. • 24. Film Analysis Of The Film Easy Rider Easy Rider Analysis America in the 1960 s was a time of turbulence and chaos. A nation divided in the midst of the counterculture movement that was sparked by a generational split and fueled by the Vietnam War, America was struggling for change. The New Hollywood took these issues into account and translated them onscreen. Films of the New Hollywood centered around the protagonist, often depicting them as an anti hero, who suffered from alienation and conflict within society. In the film Easy Rider these themes are exemplified through its reinvention of the Western genre. Dennis Hopper uses this film as a way to convey ideas of the Western by placing into a modern setting that embodies the feeling of 1960 s America. The Western in Easy Rider is depicted primarily through the conflict between the rural and urban environments displayed onscreen. Throughout the film the countryside and city are constantly being compared through the narrative, the cinematography, and the dialogue that is presented to the audience. Laszlo Kovac s vivid and expansive camerawork showcases the the sprawling mountains and endless deserts that are reminiscent of the Western Frontier. The rural territory that Wyatt and Billy occupy during their breaks is almost idyllic whether they are huddled around a campfire or sitting in an open field, a reminder of the Western is brought to the surface. The farmer s ranch and hippie commune that is eventually seen in the film are shown as isolated settlements, and the heart of the wilderness lies within them. Wyatt first praises the farmer for living off the land, and says Not every man that can live off the land, you know. You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud. He later on conveys his belief that the commune will be able to produce crops even in the empty field that is seen. Like these people, Billy and Wyatt have rejected society seeking out their own freedom, living as outlaws like many western heros do. When Wyatt and Billy are rejected from motels, that is symbolic of the civilized world that they are no longer apart of, rather they must retreat to the wild to set up camp, often gathering ... P Vulgaris Lab Report After precisely conducting the experiment and tabulating the results, data for Paraquat toxicity upon P. vulgaris plants can be interpreted over several different parameters. The parameters by which Paraquat toxicity was examined within this experiment involve visual observations, x ray diffraction, chlorophyll concentrations, protein concentrations, and lastly malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations on a per mg of protein basis. As stated before Paraquat is very widely used herbicide known to produce superoxide anions leading to chloroplast membrane damage and ultimately a variety of adverse effects upon the host organism, in this case P. vulgaris (Chia et al., 1982). The initial signs of Paraquat toxicity were immensely noticeable ... Following absorbance readings of the various BSA solutions, they were plotted against their concentrations providing an indirect measure for determining protein concentrations of the plant samples within the assay tubes, and through further calculations the sample protein concentration. The mean protein concentration for the control group was calculated to be 3.34 ± 1.30 mg/mL, while the mean treated group concentration was 2.01 ± 1.26 mg/mL. These results similarly like the chlorophyll results correlate with the literature articles, as a reduced protein content within the Paraquat treated plants can be expected to some extent (Chia et al., 1981). This reduction in protein concentration is the result of those superoxide anions produced by Paraquat, disrupting the chloroplast membranes and allowing for intracellular components including some proteins to leak out, hence the decrease in protein concentration in comparison to the non treated plants (Qian et al., 2009). A slight outlier may exist within the treated groups protein concentrations as one of the groups provided a negative value for protein concentration which is not valid, but even after exclusion of that data value, results are still supportive of the expected outcome. Though these results support the claim of Paraquat toxicity causing membrane deterioration and leakiness, protein concentration values are rather more purposeful when used to analyze malondialdehyde (MDA) values on per mg of protein ...
