Cinematic Techniques In Mystic River
The film Mystic River uses many concepts in it to get its story across. The use of lighting was crucial
in order to accurately set the mood of the movie. The sound also was important to clue the viewer in to
what was happening and what was about to happen. The constant cuts and flashbacks made it obvious
that Dave s traumatizing past still affects every action and day of his current life.
The lighting in Mystic River plays a big role in setting the mood of the movie. The movie starts off
quite dull and brown in color, but after Dave was taken away by the pedophiles the movie got even
darker and continued to stay brown and depressing until Dave died. The movie had a lot of low key
lighting throughout it, which really helped to build up the suspense. The low key lighting was mostly
around Dave and Jimmy, both were people who had something to hide. Sean was the only mentally
sane one. The cinematographer showed his sanity by making him ... Show more content on

It can really make or break a scene. Sounds and music can add tense, suspense and can set the mood
for a scene. The scene where Dave is escaping uses sounds to set the frantic mood. It sounds as if
monsters and wolves are chasing him; while it was only men chasing him Dave remembers them as
actual monsters. He refers to them as vampires and wolves throughout the movie. At the Christening
you hear typical church music in the background, but Jimmy couldn t help but be worried about his
daughter that didn t return home last night. You re able to tell something is wrong when you hear the
police sirens in the background and he turns around with a stern expression on his face. If it had just
been the church music in the background him turning around be as significant to the movie.
Suspenseful, tense music plays in the background anytime Dave talks about his past. The music shows
how messed up he is in the head and lets on to how he ll never be able to live a normal

Taylor B. Hart Abstract
Antisocial Personality Disorder is a very rare disorder. The criteria to be diagnosed with Antisocial
Personality Disorder has been changed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
throughout many years. The rareness of this disorder can be considered beneficial in the world
because of the way people diagnosed with it become and what they do to others. Many people
diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder find their self in prison. A variety of causes pertain to
this disorder. Very few treatments of this disorder seem to work of this that has been tested.
Researchers are still working on a better way to treat this disorder. The defense mechanisms associated
with antisocial personality disorder are quite common and the same during the course of diagnosis.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Antisocial personality disorder (APD or ASPD) is a mental disorder in which a person s approach in
any given situation as well as his style of thinking is neglecting towards others. People with this
disorder are commonly known as psychopaths or sociopaths. An individual with APD shows empathy
and disregards people s thoughts and feelings. Those with APD can be characterized as morally
reprehensible. They are the ones that seem to say all of the right things. Antisocial personality

The Achievement Of The Millennium Development Goals
Electrification is widely believed to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs), based on the assumption that sustainable access to modern energy services fosters
economic and social development, and leads to improvements in the quality of life. Yet, particularly in
rural Sub Saharan Africa electrification rates are still low, as not far beyond 36 % (as of international
study) of the population use electricity. In rural Ethiopia, the electrification rate is even considerably
lower. As part of the efforts to achieve the MDGs it is among the national policy priorities of most
countries to improve access to electricity be it via extension of the national grid or decentralized
electricity. The national target for Ethiopia, for example, is to augment the overall electrification rate
to 90 % by 2015 a lot times the rate in 1998 E.C. The international donor community joins these
efforts and has increased its support to the energy sector in general and electrification projects in
particular. As part of these international Endeavours s, World Bank, Bank of Arab for Economic
Development in Africa (BADEA), the Kuwait Fund, African Development Bank (AFDB) and bilateral
cooperation from development partner countries like Indian Government envisages the sustainable
provision of access to modern energy for rural community within the country. Against this background
of increasing interestinrural electrification, it is crucial to obtain a more solid basis

Meetings Are Considered A Waste Of Time
For many, meetings are considered a waste of time. Lots of information is presented without achieving
the results intended. Leading a successful meeting takes effort and dedication. To ensure meetings lead
to actions, the leader must have a clear objective, involve key players, use time wisely, present an
action plan and follow up (Harary, 2015). One of the most ineffective meetings we had was called by
the Information Technology manager and the CTO. The reason for the meeting was that the IT
helpdesk was getting repeated calls for a similar issue happening all over our building. Once several
calls come in for the same issue, we know there must be a bigger problem affecting several computers.
This situation was brought up to the CTO by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We had a round table meeting and everyone had the chance to speak and ask questions accordingly to
try to get to the bottom of this. The helpdesk team was able to resolve issues temporarily, but the
network team refused to take any initiative on fixing the problem. The telecommunications department
was the first one to take initiative and work directly with the helpdesk, to personally go see the clients
while the issue was happening. That way he was able to rule out any issues with the network lines or
IP phone system.
After the first meeting not much was accomplished. We already knew that the phone systems were not
the problem. It was obviously a network and security issue. A second meeting had to be done to
present all findings during our research. The helpdesk and telecommunications had to bring all details
to prove the issue was not phone related and try to get help from networking and security. Our CTO
finally jumped in and requested the security and network team to get involved with the helpdesk team
to find out the real solution and every time a user called with this issue, we had to directly report to all
members of the meeting all the details of the calls and findings.
After the CTO getting involved and pushing for a solution, we started to see results. Our network team
had worked with the security team and implementing a new authentication factor for our internal

The Conflict Between Syria And Lebanon
Syria and Lebanon are two dramatically different states with a deeply intertwined history. They were
both born out of French interventionism following World War 1, and have experienced complex and
strained relations ever since. The two nations have both experienced prodigious political turmoil since
gaining their independence, with both suffering from civil wars and conflict with their mutual
neighbor, Israel. The war and turmoil that has plagued these two countries can be traced back to
various competing national interests, as well as a struggle for regional power. The various religious
groups in the area have historically formed transnational advocacy networks with the intent of
influencing regional politics. These groups have proved to of been a major factor in the history of both
nations.
With the end of World War One and the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the allied powers in Europe were
left in control of the Ottoman territory in the Middle East. The nation of France was left in control of
the area now known as Syria and Lebanon. The French Mandate of Syria and Lebanon, which was
formalized in 1922, officially made France responsible for creating the two states and preparing them
for self governance (Kjeilen). By 1943 both nations had achieved their independence from France, and
they agreed to a tentative mutual security agreement. However relations between the two nations
remained strained. While the governments of both nations were unified in their opposition to

Birling is an egotistical, arrogant man that follows his capitalistic ideology. He has no concept of
value other than wealth or social status. This is revealed when Birling says Sheila means a tremendous

woman had faced because of their social inequality from men indicates that Birling is using his
daughter for his own selfish greed. Sheila is a representation of feminisation in society during the
early 1900 because she is treated as an object. By using the word means , it signifies that it could be a

Memory Distortion Research Paper
INTRODUCTION
Over three decades of research on memory distortion leaves no doubt that memory can be altered with
the use of suggestive techniques (Loftus Pickrell, 1995). Such suggestive memory manipulation
procedures strongly encourage people to recall past happenings and have repeatedly been used to
create reccollections of events that never took place (Lynn, Lock, Loftus, Krackow Lilienfeld, 2003).
Elizabeth Loftus pioneered research into the effects of misleading suggestive information on memory,
(Loftus, 1979; Loftus, Miller Burns, 1978, Wells Loftus 1984) and since, , researchers have
successfully implanted memories of a wide variety of ficticious events through use of suggestive
questions and statements; eg that individuals spilled punch at a wedding (Hyman, Husband Billings,
1995), that they broke a window with their hand (Garry, Manning, Loftus Sherman, 1996; Heaps
Nash, 1999), or that they got lost before age 3 (Mazzoni, Loftus, Seitz Lynn, 1999), amongst many
others.
People are often astoundingly confident in their distorted or false memories, often going on to
describe the pseudomemories in substantial detail. Sometimes, the memories persist even ... Show

Napoleon Bonaparte Leadership
Napoleon Bonaparte is often characterized as one of the most brilliant and influential military leader
in all of history. Known mostly for his diminutive stature and extraordinary military skill, Napoleon
Bonaparte is commonly recognized today for his great accomplishments and works regarding the
country of France. Though he achieved many great things, the successfulness of this leader is often
still debated all across the world. Many believe he was unsuccessful and arrogant while others argue
that Napoleon s great skill shaped the world as it is known today. Though there are numerous
conflicting viewpoints throughout the world, Napoleon s successfulness is more prominent, for his
reforms to the country of France and military dominance set him apart from all other preceding
leaders. Napoleon Bonaparte, also known as the Little Corporal, was born on August 15, 1769, on the
small island of Corsica in France. He was the fourth of eleven children of Carlo Bonaparte and Letizia
Romolino. Though oftentimes families with this many children struggled in France s floundering
economy, Napoleon s father was of the noble status, so his children were able to receive a fair
education during their childhood. Napoleon Bonaparte was then able to attend a military academy in
France where he trained and accomplished the status of commander. Napoleon, a defender of the
revolution, ended up using this military power to stage a coup d etat against the French government,

There are definitely two arguments on whether or not
Oedipus
had fallen to fate or made his own decisions, but if you think about it, the prophecy stated literally
everything that was going to happen, and maybe it would not had happened if Oedipus did not seek
out everything because the prophecy only unfolded when he began to venture out and look for the
problem trying to solve his own problems. Him doing this unraveled something much worse and is
what led him to his banishment, so if you think about it, maybe fate did bring him to this terrible
ending, but how can we be for sure because he did make these decisions himself.
Jocasta
and
Laius
were the two to blame for believing in such a thing and leaving their child to die a terrible death, only
to come back and have the prophecy happen anyways. King
Laius
sought out the prophecy and found out that their son
(if
they had one), would eventually kill him.
He
did not want this so he gave up his son for adoption. Oedipus got into an altercation and ended up
killing his birth father even after he sought out the prophecy as well only to find out that he would still
end up killing his father.

Critical Thinking Essay
INTRODUCTION Critical thinking has been defined in great depth over thousands of years yet
comparison of many of these definitions show the emphasis alters between what characteristic is
deemed most important for each individual. However the definition alters, the same three important
principles are always included: scepticism, open mindedness and objectivity. It is important for each
individual to conclude his or her own definition of critical thinking to enable a specific authenticity
that equates to an individuals academic work. This essay will show that while the true meaning of

Each individual revisiting the definition of critical thinking draws from varied areas of importance in
order to validate in turn, their individual work. There are three important principles that underpin
critical thinking: scepticism, open mindedness and objectivity. Each principle is important in its own
right yet is required to work conjointly to achieve a logical, balanced argument. Scepticism is required
to authenticate relevant evidence and validate the source, it should never be assumed that a person of
authority has delivered the information in print.(Burton 2006:45) Open mindedness is remaining
impartial and being prepared to accept evidence which conflicts with personal beliefs while
considering all opinions.(Burton 2006 45 46) Objectivity is perceiving the argument while
disregarding all emotional responses. STRATEGIES FOR CRITICAL THINKING Students need to
have specific strategies when they undertake a critical thinking approach to reading information
sources and writing answers to essay questions. The main strategies are to determine the validity of

to detect bias or prejudice. One important critical thinking strategy to develop in order to maintain

what is said and what is common or predictable is needed to the effective use of irony. The quote helps
reveal this idea. The Lottery Short story by Shirley Jackson 1. The Lottery demonstrates a community

The Doctrine Of Primal Sin Essay
Augustine on the doctrine of primal sin focuses on the downfall of Lucifer, and whether or not he
foreknew there would be consequences in turning away from God. However, it is arguable that Lucifer
did foresee his coming downfall. Because his intentional actions in turning away from God goes
against his angelic nature, which means he had to deliberately had to deprive himself of the greatest of
goods, and actively pursue misery. For Lucifer perversely chooses to abandon all that is good by
turning away from God, and towards what is contrary of Him, which is nothingness. That in which, on
behalf of Augustine, I will argue that Lucifer did foresee the coming of his downfall. For Lucifer
chose to bolster the vices of his will, which became the very means of degenerating his angelic nature.
Consequently, this means Lucifer intentionally pursued what is contrary to the God, thus leading to his
fall.
In behalf of Augustine, it is arguable that Lucifer foreknew his actions in rebelling against God was
going to bring about a particular consequence. For it is significant to understand the development of
the vices which enables Lucifer to fall. For Augustine explains in book 12, chapter 1; all Angels
recognize a common good in their nature which is to cleave to God. However, in order for Lucifer to
turn away from the divine graces of God, he must then deny his angelic nature. For the act of rejecting
his angelic nature, originates from the particular good bestowed by God. Because it

Dissection Alternatives Essay
Dissection Alternatives
Dissection in science classrooms is an experience that almost every student has to go through, but one
that many will regret. It is estimated that six million vertebrate animals are dissected in high schools
each year, and another 5.7 million are used in college laboratories. The issue of educational dissection
has become a national concern. Many groups such as PETA and The Humane Society have been
lobbying for years to outlaw such practices, and implement new and safe dissection alternatives.
Alternatives to dissection have become more popular in recent decades and may be the future of

They ruled that under her First Amendment rights Jennifer could object to the dissection on moral
grounds, and therefore could not be forced to participate. Jennifer s high school then instated a student
choice policy so that students who chose not to participate in dissections would be offered a viable
alternative. Now there are seven states that have informed consent laws regarding classroom
dissection: Florida, California, Maine, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Rhode Island, and New York. These
laws require that students must be informed of a dissection lab at the beginning of a course, and if they
wish, will be provided with an alternative. There are also two states where it is mandatory that
students are provided with dissection alternatives: Maryland, and Illinois.
There are also several nations that have banned educational dissection from their science curriculums.
Argentina was the first in 1987, followed by Slovakia (1994), and Israel (1999). And in 2001, India
banned the use of mice, rats, and frogs for any type of dissection purposes.
The main issue with statewide dissection laws is that they only apply to elementary, middle, and high
schools. Colleges and Universities are not required to follow each state s policy. This can create many
problems. At one particular University, the student choice policy for dissection may very from

of Humanistic and Psychodynamic Both the humanistic and psychodynamic theories perspectives are
different as it relates to the development of human behaviour. However, some of their differences is
that the humanistic theory seeks to understand how individuals perceive as well as their experiences.
They, however, believe that before one is self actualised or reaches their full potential, they have to
start from the basic of human needs through Maslow s hierarchy of needs. As for example, in order for

education as the leading causes of crime and violence in the city. But about 48 percent disagree with

White Privilege in My Career Essay
Ms. McIntosh made a particularly resonant statement about halfway through her essay; my skin color
was an asset for any move I was educated to want to make. I have always been free to move around

Considerations she includes on her list of privileges never actively entered into my decision making

advance myself in anyway I decided. This made me wonder if in fact I had earned through merit and
achievement all I believe I have to date.

from an undergraduate institute that was not a national or internationally ranked university. This fact
in and of itself may not seem biased, but this hiring criteria eliminated all candidates from regional

This elimination criteria alone can be imputed to have reduced the ethnic pool of candidates
substantially. The demographics of Tampa in 2010 were 26% black and 23% Hispanic and 46% white.
I was in high school during the 80 s, the demographics were more evenly distributed between the three

intrastate migration. This makes it safe to assume that the number of whites representative of Tampa in
1992 was somewhere between 33 46% of the total population.

Hershey s Way Of Making Chocolate
Chocolate is one of the most popular products consumed in the United States and all around the world.
Hershey Chocolate Company originated in 1894, by Milton Hershey (Hershey Company, 2015). He
was the first American who began producing milk chocolate bars, and eventually created multiple
flavors that changed the chocolate industry forever. With such mass production and success, Hershey
was able to make milk chocolate, a once luxury item for the wealthy, into an affordable treat for all
(Hershey Company, 2015). Hershey s way of making chocolate is one of a kind. Hershey starts the
chocolate making process by importing cocoa beans from cacao trees found in tropical regions near

The milk is mixed with sugar into a taffy like consistency where it will then be blended with chocolate
liquor. The milk adds the sweet taste and smooth texture while the chocolate liquor adds the chocolate
flavor. By combining chocolate liquor, milk and sugar it creates a chocolate crumb where it is then
ground into a fine powder to create chocolate paste. The chocolate paste is refined in the conching
machine where it brings out more of the rich chocolate flavor. The final step to Hershey s chocolate
making process is sending the chocolate to the drying rack where it will be cooled, wrapped and
distributed all around the world for consumption. For the S mores taste test, four different types of
Hershey chocolate were used to conduct the experiment. There are multiple differences between all

Essay on The Lives of Athenian Women
Women in classical Athens could not have had an extremely enjoyable experience, if we rely on
literary sources concerning the roles of women within the Greek polis. The so called Athenian
democracy only benefited a fraction of the entire population. At least half of this population was
female, yet women seem to have had very little influence and few official civic rights. `The position of
women...is a subject which has provoked much controversy.
(Lacey: 1968, 151).
Studies concerning the lives of women in classical Athens have sparked much controversy because,
despite the apparent fascination with femininity manifested in art and drama, we have no evidence

In Sarah B. Pomeroy s influential monograph, Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in
Classical Antiquity (1976), it is pointed out that in the past, when scholars have considered the quality
of life for women in classical Athens, they have often subjectively selected the type of evidence to use
for their argument. She argues that `optimists, who are of the opinion that women enjoyed a
comparatively liberated lifestyle, focus upon the prominent role that women play within art and
drama. `Pessismists, on the other hand, base their ideas upon Athenian laws and the writings of orators
and moralists (Pomeroy: 1976; Just: 1989). The evidence that we have available regarding women
`relate to different levels of reality (Humphreys: 1983; Just: 1989), therefore the sources pertain to
different aspects of women s lives and need to be pieced together to provide a clear picture.
One such `optimistic scholar is A.M. Gomme (1925), who referred to distinctive female characters
such as Medea, Clytemnestra, Antigone and Electra in Greek tragedy. Gomme argued that tragedy
showed Athenian women as having the freedom to come and go as they pleased. He points out that
even the timid, submissive Ismene is content to wander the streets of Thebes with her sister Antigone
(who is the more dominant, perhaps even masculine, heroine) without a male guardian

Iroquois Confederacy
IROQUOIS CONFEDERACY
by Loretta Hall
OVERVIEW
The Iroquois Confederacy, an association of six linguistically related tribes in the northeastern
woodlands, was a sophisticated society of some 5,500 people when the first white explorers
encountered it at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The 1990 Census counted 49,038 Iroquois
living in the United States, making them the country s eighth most populous Native American group.
Although Iroquoian tribes own seven reservations in New York state and one in Wisconsin, the
majority of the people live off the reservations. An additional 5,000 Iroquois reside in Canada, where
there are two Iroquoian reservations. The people are not averse to adopting new technology when it is

During that period, the Iroquois began to acquire European trade goods through raids on other Indian
tribes. They found the metal axes, knives, hoes, and kettles far superior to their implements of stone,
bone, shell, and wood. Woven cloth began to replace the animal skins usually used for clothing
materials.
The recurring raids prompted the French to help their Indian allies attack the Iroquois in 1609,
opening a new technological era for the people of the Confederacy. French body armor was made of
metal, whereas that of the Iroquois was made of slatted wood. Furthermore, the French fought with
firearms, while traditional Iroquois weapons were bows and arrows, stone tomahawks, and wooden
warclubs.
In response to European influence, the Iroquois gradually changed their military tactics to incorporate
stealth, surprise, and ambush. Their motives for fighting also changed. In the past, they had fought for
prestige or revenge, or to obtain goods or captives; now they fought for economic advantage, seeking
control over bountiful beaver hunting grounds or perhaps a stash of beaver skins to trade for European
goods.
Although it provided the Indians with better tools, European incursion into the territory was disastrous
for the indigenous people. In the 1690s alone, the Iroquois lost between 1,600 and 2,000 people in
fighting with other Indian tribes. In addition, European diseases such as smallpox, measles, influenza,
lung infections,

Diversity Promotes A Higher Potential Of Success For A...
Albert Einstein once said, We cannot solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used
when we created them. In other words, we need different ideas to come to an optimal solution.
Diversity encompasses a variety of differences between people in this world. Each individual is
classified to be different from one another whether it is from age, gender, race, personality, education,
background, experiences, and more. Varying viewpoints provides a team with a larger pool of ideas to
work with and filter out what works for them. Modern day businesses that are striving towards success
through innovation tend to lean teams building a diverse team. A variety of experiences and
backgrounds creates a channel of people who can provide innovated ideas that may have never been
thought of. In this paper, I argue that diversity promotes a higher potential of success for a company.
Age diversity plays a significant factor in productivity. From the young to the old, knowledge will
vary when it comes to age and experience. Together they will comprise of a team with different
perspectives and interpretations of ideas. These factors contribute to the knowledge pool of the
workforce which in return have a direct effect on their abilities to problem solve. In Uschi Backes

The Worst Sort of Husband by Daniel Defoe was written to explain the different types of husbands

There are five different husbands described in the analysis: the Drunken Husband, the Debauched

point of view of men for a sober woman s knowledge on who she wants to marry. The author, Daniel
Defoe was an English writer that lived in the 1700s. Daniel Defoe did not always have this name
because he changed his name to something that he personally thought was professional. Defoe wanted
his name to sound more like a gentleman s name and that is the name he chose. Defoe was a very
famous writer in the 1700s in London, England and was acknowledged by all his written work.

Julius Caesar Evil
Shakespeare s tragedy Julius Caesar takes place in Rome at the time of Caesar s assassination. After
Caesar returns home, he is hailed as a war hero, and the citizens of Rome plan to crown him as their
ruler. Cassius, knowing Caesar will soon become a tyrant, convinces the honorable and well respected
Brutus, a good friend of Caesar, to murder him for the good of the city. Although many consider Julius
Caesar the hero of the play, Brutus is the true Shakespearean tragic hero. This is proven first by his
inherently honorable character. Furthermore, Brutus s loyalty, which in most cases is considered a
virtue, becomes a sin within the context of the story. Lastly, Brutus becomes blind to reality, believing
the murder of Caesar is a good and necessary act.
First and foremost, Brutus is proven to be a tragic hero by his good character. Brutus, unlike Caesar, is
a humble man, known in the town to be loyal and put others before himself. For example, while
Cassius attempts to rile Brutus up over Caesar s newfound fame, he argues the point that Brutus has an
inherent right to the throne. Brutus responds to this by saying that [he] had rather be a villager / Than
to repute himself a son of Rome (Shakespeare 1.2.180 181). While Caesar is so intoxicated by the
attention and fame he receives that he agrees to rule without any critical thinking, Brutus, not blinded
by greed or pride, is able to clearly see that taking on this power would not be wise. Very few would
be able to resist this opportunity to be at the center of all this praise, but Brutus is both humble and
wise enough to turn down what should be his role because he realizes the ability to be worshipped is
not enough to make a leader. Although literary critic Harold Bloom argues that Brutus is ... morally
rather vain ... [and] powerfully self centered (1 2), it is proven throughout the novel that Brutus has
practically no ego and puts the needs of the Romans before his own. Brutus is modest, intelligent, and
at his center, a good person.
Another characteristic of Brutus that defines him as a tragic hero is his virtue of loyalty to Rome used
as a sin. The night before Caesar s downfall, Brutus receives an abundance of letters, declaring Caesar
unfit to be

Firearms and Their Consequences
Is the convenience of others worth the life of a single innocent? The answer of this question should
spark such a reaction that it would make it impossible to remain neutral. And as such the world should
ask the land that claims to be home of the brave; being the United States of America, what it s stance
is on gun control. Because the land of opportunity can no longer say yes to unrestricted gun sales and
no the safety of its innocents; or should only the gun owners dictate the laws in the land of
opportunity. America needs to enforce gun restrictions to save the lives of innocent people. To long
has it allowed its own civilians to dictate the worth of the life of an innocent. Should the general
consensus be to hold life to the highest value? Is it not unfathomable to allow convenience to trump
safety? Sometimes the only unbiased facts that can be stated are numbers, and here is some. Twelve,

Symbolic Interactionism, Functional Analysis, And Conflict...
Modern sociology is characterized by three main theoretical approaches: symbolic interactionism,
functional analysis, and conflict theory. Personally, I believe that symbolic interactionism is the most
logically viable approach to understanding modern society due to its understanding of the meaning
people ascribe to everyday concepts. As a theory, functionalism fails to mention those who either
deviate from the whole or work against society. Concerning Marx s conflict theory, for now, the time
of competing for scarcities has ebbed; there are other, more pressing factors driving society today such
as family and an individual s aspirations. Nevertheless, symbolic interactionism is not without its
faults; the very fact that symbols differ in meaning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, most people are unaware they are partially motivated by their awareness of symbols. Thus,
symbolic interactionism can t fully explain an individual s actions because they aren t consciously

harmful to society. Consider the difference of respect given to a businessman in a suit versus a
homeless veteran with a drug addiction; the symbols of wealth and poverty play a notable roll in the
way humanity treats each other. Lastly, symbols change over time. A perfect example is the field of
technology: years ago, it was viewed as mysterious and complex while today, technology is something
to be mastered. Programmers, scientists, and cyber hackers alike all quest to gain the upper hand in

My Hair and I
At some point in a woman s life, she is, if like most women, unhappy with her hair. A woman with

I was one of those women. My hair has an energy, personality, and life of her own. I refer to my hair
as she because, although by technical definition my hair is not a separate living being, and although I

When I was 13, I decided to grow out my pageboy style. This decision was not difficult (but

Anansi And Brother Death By Audrey Krisbergh
Anansi and Brother death is an African folklore tale, about the spider trickster Anansi encountering
Brother Death. Anansi discovers an old man sitting outside of a house one day. Anansi, being thirsty

Anansi takes it upon himself then, to enter the home, drink some water and help himself to any food

The fact that a being as powerful as Death itself is punished with failure and embarrassment because

person they wish to get revenge on.
Greed and it s risk towards yourself and those you care about, the exploitation of silence as

Evaluation Of A Standout Among The Most Vital Drivers Of...
A standout amongst the most vital drivers of student learning is the way that learning is measured and
it has been demonstrated that students states of mind towards their studies are emphatically influenced
by the nature and timing of appraisal. There are two noteworthy sorts of evaluations, subjective and
objective. Subjective testing includes short answer and fill in the blank tests. Objective testing makes
reference to matching, true/false and multiple choice tests. Subjective tests require students to be
responsible for the answers. These tests are subjective on the grounds that they require valuation and
finding from the grader. Objective tests require the student to choose particular answers gave by the
test composer. These tests are objective on the grounds that the scoring in unbiased. There is no steady
point of preference of one over the other. One is not characteristically better than the other. The
determination of the evaluation sort to direct is dependent upon the measure of the expected learning
result. Assessments are beneficial and have many advantages as well as disadvantages.

Research focusing on the calculation of racial disparities in police outcomes has generally examined
police traffic stops and the follow up police activities, such as, citations, search and warnings. Review
of these studies suggests that calculation methods of racial disparity vary from one study to another;
however, majority of those studies employed population as a baseline measure or benchmarking
variable (Withrow, 2002; Smith Petrocelli, 2001; Withrow Williams, 2015). Early studies using
population as a baseline measure to compare disproportionate traffic stop counts found substantial

city, they represent 57% of overall police arrests. Similarly, the probability of Black arrest in Berkeley

corresponding population. In addition to this, Bureau of Justice statistics report that at the national
level, Blacks are two times more likely to be arrested compared to Whites. Concurring with media
reports and national statistics institutes estimates, empirical studies also report high proportion of
minority arrests compared to their representation in the population (Golub, Johnson, Dunlap, 2007).
On the other hand, others argue that disproportionality in arrest decisions is commensurate with the
racial distributions in offending rather than residential distribution in the population (D Alessio

differential involvement in crime commission leads to higher arrest rates. For this reason, employing

relying only population as a baseline measure (Golub et al., 2007).

Consequentialism Vs Deontological Analysis
To analyze the dilemma one must understand how a consequentialist and a deontological would come
to their conclusions. A basic difference is the consequentialist would believe the end justifies the
means. A deontologist would conclude that irrespective of outcomes, the method or means should
conform to a stricture or rule set.
The consequentialist is focused on the consequences of the action. If the end result provides more
good than bad, they would conclude the action justifies the end result. To make a conclusion the
consequentialist would ask; who will be affected by the action, who would benefit from performing
the action, who would be harmed by performing the action, who would benefit from not performing
the action, who would be harmed by not performing the action. The consequentialist would then make
a decision based on were the most good would be derived. One of the most well known practices of

dementia. It addresses the right and needs of the person with dementia and their families. Improving
quality of life and changing attitudes towards dementia is the main goal of dementia care. Dementia
care also provides quality of care, maintain dignity and promote health, security and comfort in
consideration with the standard of care and ethical guidelines (Adams Manthorpe, 2003).

It also shows the need for more effective treatment method to stabilize the disease process and provide
quality care for dementia sufferers. To achieve effective and excellence care on dementia, biological,
psychological and social approach to dementia has to consider because it provides an understanding to
people with dementia and help improved health practice, treatment and support for better dementia
care (Bowers Downs, 2008). Biological approach tackles the disease process of dementia, the cause of
brain injury and the changes in behavior pattern of dementia sufferers. On the other hand,
psychological approach to dementia involved the sufferer s reaction to the injury, how they accept it
and deal the situation. It also covers the effect of the disease process on their communication and
action in relation to others. Particularly, people with dementia, mostly feel embarrassed and depressed
by their brain injury. They are often angry, agitated and frightened because of the disease but maybe it
also means seeking help to avoid embarrassment and disgrace. Dementia care in social domain
explains the right of the person with dementia to enjoy and experience significant social interaction.
Friendly environment and venues with sociable care provider that makes them comfortable and feels

Huffman Truck
Planning and Creation of a Fleet Truck Maintenance Database for Huffman Trucking In creating a
database, the most vital steps are identifying the table elements. Upon analysis of the Entities and
Attributes for Fleet Truck Maintenance form, the elements of the database tables can be identified. In
a table, or relation, the entities and attributes of a table define the structure of a database. An entity is
an object of importance about which data can be captured. An attribute is the information that
describes the entity. When creating the tables for the Huffman Trucking Fleet Truck Maintenance,
entities and their relationships must be taken into consideration (Koenke Auer, 2010). Selection of

organize relationships: One to One relationships, One to Many relationships, and Many to Many
relationships. The traditional model standards for ERDs call for diamonds representing relationships
and rectangles representing classes. However, ERDs are loosely standardized and often look different
from one another due to software such as Microsoft Access and MySql Workbench that create ERDs
using proprietary applications. When creating the ERD for the Entities and Attributes for Fleet Truck

Truffaut On Love Essay
children chase the lovers when the man chases the women. Gérard shows his brutal and child like
nature when he chases one of his tormentors, when he gets him he slaps him, a primal and a beast just
like children would curl. The spectacle of the lovers is always accompanied by either screams or
whispers and extremely agitated and exciting body languages. The children are constantly reactive to
the spectacle of the love that they are seeing. The second motif will be the connection between love
and death. In a perfect way the spectacle in Truffaut s film constantly connected to the looming to the
unavoidable death. We noticed through the first part of the film with the shining presence of the film
when she was clothed in light. Not a coincidence at all that Gérard wears all black which foreshadows
his fate. Truffaut very subtly continues the symbolic play with colors, Bernadette will only wear white
until the crucial foreshadow moment of Gérard when they kiss goodbye. For the first time their
relationship is connected to sadness. Just like a child Gérard proposes to Bernadette by singing in a
very childish way. This moment is important because the promise of a life together will be derailed by
an accident. The end of the film is sectioned again by the unavoidable reality of death that will destroy
love. Truffaut loves films about goddesses like women and love are consistently marked by death. The
women and the reality of Eros and passion and love that is deeply connected to the reality of death.

Edvard Munch s Painting, The Scream
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter born in 1863. He was known for his pre expressionist
painting The Scream. Munch had a psychological themed style in his artworks. Edvard Munch had
struggled with agoraphobia and drinking. Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder where in situations the
sufferer perceives certain environments as dangerous or uncomfortable, usually due to the areas vast
openness or crowdedness. It is easy to say that Munch struggled with insanity during his lifetime.
Munch is portraying an actual experience of a scream piercing through nature while on a walk, after
his two companions, seen in the background, had left him. He does this with his use of color, line, and
organization. The painting is all warm colors. He uses warm colors to convey emotions. The warm
colors can be seen as either excitement or anger. In this case the colors are used to convey the idea of
anger. The figure in the painting seems to be in agony or distressed about something. Munch uses
warm colors to show the anger and frustration that the figure is experiencing. With ... Show more

From the colors and lines, to the bridge and figures. Munch uses the bridge to represent an island of
sanity. The physical transition failed to straighten out his life and troubles, unlike the other two
figures, who appear to be heading towards better things, leaving the figure alone and distressed. The
colors in the scream are symbols for the mood or feelings the figure is experiencing. Munch used
certain colors to catch the audiences attention and to show a hidden meaning. The grey, blues, and
blacks symbolize the depression and sadness that the figure is experiencing. The warmer colors: reds,
oranges, and yellows symbolize the anger and frustration the figure is going through. Munch swirled
the warm colors around the figure to show his anger flowing through him. They seem to be resting on
his shoulders. This anger and frustration is causing him to

Humming Bird Benefits
Although people enjoy viewing wildlife and hunting animals for food and fur, conflicts arise because
wild animals kill livestock, cause vehicle collisions, and damage crops. On another note, relationships
with other organism can be more than just seeing the humming bird as an eye catching small bird. It is
a benefit for the long tubed flowers because the Buff Bellied hummingbird has its long beak and small
body to remove the nectar which allows the survival of the long tubed flower. Experiments indicated
that flowers having recurved spurs deposit significantly more pollen grains on hummingbird visitors
than flowers having perpendicular spurs, apparently as a result of greater contact between the
androecium of curve spurred flowers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Praying Mantis have their own benefits within a garden as do hummingbirds, but the praying mantis
does not carry a relationship with the hummingbirds. The praying mantis waits on flowers and on
feeders to capture them. Humming birds are not resistant to bees/wasp venom. They can out maneuver
a hummingbird with just one sting and can be fatal. Hawks prey on hummingbirds due to their size
advantage. Hummingbirds are typically 3 4 grams of size and can provide nutrients to large birds.
Although their size is not a great advantage they still stand tall to a hawk to defend their habitat and
offspring. Their strong manner against their huge odds is one of the reasons that hummingbirds arouse
our interest. Hummingbirds have a symbiotic relationship with plants. They have a mutualistic
relationship because they both benefit from it. The hummingbird gets nectar from flowers which also
helps the flower because it is being pollinated. Many flowers have a tube like shape which makes it
hard for bees to get nectar from them. This benefits the hummingbird because they will have a reliable

Comparing Who s For The Game And Dulce Et Decorum Est
Comparative Poetry Essay I have chosen to compare Who s for the game? written by Jessie Pope and
Dulce Et Decorum Est written by Wilfred Owen. I have decided to choose these two poems since they
both represent two different perspectives of war. Jessie Pope writes to encourage men to explain that
war is an adventure, that men should experience. On the other hand, Wilfred Owen writes about the
horrors he experienced at war. His poem gives a descriptive background of the atrocity men went
through during the war. Both poems represent different aspects on whether men should go to war. In
Who s for the game , Pope s poem writes to encourage men to partake in the war to give their country
a hand. Pope strongly believes that war is a requirement that men should uptake. Pope uses statements
such as who ll give their country a hand? to grab the attention of men and to inspire them to join the
war. In contrast to Pope s poem, Wilfred Owen s poem is written to tell his ... Show more content on

Wilfred Owen writes his poem due to his experience at war. He writes about the sights and images of
what he witnessed during the war. He includes personal examples of a couple of experiences involving
him. An example of this was taken place, when he saw a guy plunging at him, guttering, choking,
drowning. He witnessed someone dying and uses this experience in his poem. However, Pope never
experienced what Wilfred Owen went through during the war. This made her a propagandist when it
came to writing Who s for the game? . Pope firmly believed that men should fight at war and if not,
she made them feel guilty. Pope did this by writing your country is up to her neck in a fight, And she s
looking and calling for you . This put pressure on men to fight. Pope never knew or realised the
trauma men went through during the war. It is clear that both poems have been heavily impacted by
the poet s life

Lowering the Drinking Age
What we re doing now to prevent underage drinking isn t working; it s time to try something else.
Although many people argue that the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1964, which lowed the
drinking age from eighteen to twenty one, was a good idea. David J Hanson a professor in the State
University of New York believed that something needs to be done to make the United States a safer
place to live. Is it fair that people in the United States can serve in the military, vote in elections, serve
in juries, get married, and enter into legal contracts at the age of eighteen, but not buy alcohol until
they are twenty one years of age. Lowering the drinking age in the United States to eighteen will help
young adults be more responsible, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lowering the drinking age to eighteen will encourage drinking in safer environments with supervision
rather than secretly behind closed doors. Colleges will be a safer environment if the government
would allow eighteen year olds to consume alcoholic beverages and less incidents of hidden
intoxication will occur. As a result of the drinking age at twenty one, many teenagers binge drink in
dangerous and unsupervised places. According to the NIAAA, almost 28 percent of eighteen to twenty
four year olds binge drink at least once a month. Binge drinking is a type of heavy episodic drinking
with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol over a short
period of time. Binge drinking is also associated with an increased risk of unplanned ad unprotected
sex, unplanned pregnancies, and an increased risk of HIV infection. Many proponents of lowering the
drinking age believe that with higher alcohol age limits, young people in the United States find it
harder to get alcohol and so binge drink whey they do (Debatepedia) As mentioned before, binge
drinking can lead to alcohol poisoning which can have traumatic consequences. According to the
CDC, Each year, excessive drinking and binge drinking cause 80,000 deaths across the country.
Furthermore, binge drinking and any other kind of drinking may have lasting harmful consequences,
including greater risk for the development of alcohol dependence (ICAP)

Catherine Booth and the Salvation Army
Christmas is only a few weeks away and more than any other time of the year, thousands of people in
need are looking forward for the help of the Salvation Army. The members of the Salvation Army are
impatient to worship and listen to the Holy Spirit and once again follow the steps of their mother of
the Army, Catherine Booth. There are more than 1.5 million Salvationists across the Europe and the
United States, helping people in need for physical and spiritual salvation. In 1865, William Booth, a
British Methodist preacher, found the Salvation Army with the help of his wife Catherine Booth, who
later was known as the mother of the Salvation Army. Their mission, with the values of hope and
justice, was to transform the lives of people, especially those in need for spirituality. Do you also
follow Christ? was Catherine s Constant question to her listeners. The causes of Catherine Booth s
success in her life can be summarized in three stages of: her upbringing, her religion and desire to
follow Jesus Christ, and her marital life that gave her the opportunity to serve in the Salvation Army.
The best gift that anyone can ask for in life is, to have a good and spiritual mother, and Catherine was
blessed with this gift. From childhood, Catherine was very spiritual and followed the Bible and set
Jesus Christ s teachings for her guidance in life. Catherine had an exceptional relationship with her
mother in every stage of her life and she had a major contribution to Catherine s

The Doctrine Of Primal Sin Essay Augustine on the doctrine of primal sin focuses on the downfall of Lucifer, and whether or not he foreknew there would be consequences in turning away from God. Because his intentional actions in turning away from God goes against his angelic nature, which means he had to deliberately had to deprive himself of the greatest of goods, and actively pursue misery. The so called Athenian democracy only benefited a fraction of the entire population. Pomeroy s influential monograph, Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves: Women in Classical Antiquity (1976), it is pointed out that in the past, when scholars have considered the quality of life for women in classical Athens, they have often subjectively selected the type of evidence to use for their argument. She argues that `optimists, who are of the opinion that women enjoyed a comparatively liberated lifestyle, focus upon the prominent role that women play within art and drama. `Pessismists, on the other hand, base their ideas upon Athenian laws and the writings of orators and moralists (Pomeroy: 1976; Just: 1989). The evidence that we have available regarding women `relate to different levels of reality (Humphreys: 1983; Just: 1989), therefore the sources pertain to different aspects of women s lives and need to be pieced together to provide a clear picture. One such `optimistic scholar is A.M. Gomme (1925), who referred to distinctive female characters such as Medea, Clytemnestra, Antigone and Electra in Greek tragedy. Gomme argued that tragedy showed Athenian women as having the freedom to come and go as they pleased. The 1990 Census counted 49,038 Iroquois living in the United States, making them the country s eighth most populous Native American group. During that period, the Iroquois began to acquire European trade goods through raids on other Indian tribes. They found the metal axes, knives, hoes, and kettles far superior to their implements of stone, bone, shell, and wood. Woven cloth began to replace the animal skins usually used for clothing materials. The recurring raids prompted the French to help their Indian allies attack the Iroquois in 1609, opening a new technological era for the people of the Confederacy. French body armor was made of metal, whereas that of the Iroquois was made of slatted wood. Furthermore, the French fought with firearms, while traditional Iroquois weapons were bows and arrows, stone tomahawks, and wooden warclubs. In response to European influence, the Iroquois gradually changed their military tactics to incorporate stealth, surprise, and ambush. Their motives for fighting also changed. In the past, they had fought for prestige or revenge, or to obtain goods or captives; now they fought for economic advantage, seeking control over bountiful beaver hunting grounds or perhaps a stash of beaver skins to trade for European goods. Although it provided the Indians with better tools, European incursion into the territory was disastrous for the indigenous people. In other words, we need different ideas to come to an optimal solution. Diversity encompasses a variety of differences between people in this world. Each individual is classified to be different from one another whether it is from age, gender, race, personality, education, background, experiences, and more. Varying viewpoints provides a team with a larger pool of ideas to work with and filter out what works for them. • 32. Julius Caesar Evil Shakespeare s tragedy Julius Caesar takes place in Rome at the time of Caesar s assassination. After Caesar returns home, he is hailed as a war hero, and the citizens of Rome plan to crown him as their ruler. Cassius, knowing Caesar will soon become a tyrant, convinces the honorable and well respected Brutus, a good friend of Caesar, to murder him for the good of the city. Although many consider Julius Caesar the hero of the play, Brutus is the true Shakespearean tragic hero. This is proven first by his inherently honorable character. Furthermore, Brutus s loyalty, which in most cases is considered a virtue, becomes a sin within the context of the story. Lastly, Brutus becomes blind to reality, believing the murder of Caesar is a good and necessary act. First and foremost, Brutus is proven to be a tragic hero by his good character. Brutus, unlike Caesar, is a humble man, known in the town to be loyal and put others before himself. For example, while Cassius attempts to rile Brutus up over Caesar s newfound fame, he argues the point that Brutus has an inherent right to the throne. Brutus responds to this by saying that [he] had rather be a villager / Than to repute himself a son of Rome (Shakespeare 1.2.180 181). While Caesar is so intoxicated by the attention and fame he receives that he agrees to rule without any critical thinking, Brutus, not blinded by greed or pride, is able to clearly see that taking on this power would not be wise. Very few would be able to resist this opportunity to be at the center of all this praise, but Brutus is both humble and wise enough to turn down what should be his role because he realizes the ability to be worshipped is not enough to make a leader. Although literary critic Harold Bloom argues that Brutus is ... morally rather vain ... [and] powerfully self centered (1 2), it is proven throughout the novel that Brutus has practically no ego and puts the needs of the Romans before his own. The answer of this question should spark such a reaction that it would make it impossible to remain neutral. As a theory, functionalism fails to mention those who either deviate from the whole or work against society. Gérard shows his brutal and child like nature when he chases one of his tormentors, when he gets him he slaps him, a primal and a beast just like children would curl. The spectacle of the lovers is always accompanied by either screams or whispers and extremely agitated and exciting body languages. The children are constantly reactive to the spectacle of the love that they are seeing. The second motif will be the connection between love and death. In a perfect way the spectacle in Truffaut s film constantly connected to the looming to the unavoidable death. Truffaut very subtly continues the symbolic play with colors, Bernadette will only wear white until the crucial foreshadow moment of Gérard when they kiss goodbye. For the first time their relationship is connected to sadness. Just like a child Gérard proposes to Bernadette by singing in a very childish way. • 49. Comparing Who s For The Game And Dulce Et Decorum Est Comparative Poetry Essay I have chosen to compare Who s for the game? written by Jessie Pope and Dulce Et Decorum Est written by Wilfred Owen. I have decided to choose these two poems since they both represent two different perspectives of war. Jessie Pope writes to encourage men to explain that war is an adventure, that men should experience. On the other hand, Wilfred Owen writes about the horrors he experienced at war. His poem gives a descriptive background of the atrocity men went through during the war. Both poems represent different aspects on whether men should go to war. In Who s for the game , Pope s poem writes to encourage men to partake in the war to give their country a hand. Pope strongly believes that war is a requirement that men should uptake. Pope uses statements such as who ll give their country a hand? to grab the attention of men and to inspire them to join the war. Pope firmly believed that men should fight at war and if not, she made them feel guilty. Pope did this by writing your country is up to her neck in a fight, And she s looking and calling for you . This put pressure on men to fight. Pope never knew or realised the trauma men went through during the war. It is clear that both poems have been heavily impacted by the poet s life ... Although many people argue that the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1964, which lowed the drinking age from eighteen to twenty one, was a good idea. David J Hanson a professor in the State University of New York believed that something needs to be done to make the United States a safer place to live. Lowering the drinking age to eighteen will encourage drinking in safer environments with supervision rather than secretly behind closed doors. Colleges will be a safer environment if the government would allow eighteen year olds to consume alcoholic beverages and less incidents of hidden intoxication will occur. According to the NIAAA, almost 28 percent of eighteen to twenty four year olds binge drink at least once a month. Binge drinking is a type of heavy episodic drinking with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.
