Environmental Protection Is A Trending Topic
Environmental protection is a trending topic not only in industries but also in architectures. Finding a
solution that could minimum the pollution to surrounding environment and save the resources at the
same time is crucial for architects in the process of design. Large amount of architects accepted the
practice of involving more daylight in their architects to save more resources. An abundant supply of
natural lighting can also save money and improve the visual quality of the environment. However, for
buildings with different functions, the usage and requirement of light are also different, in particular,
the libraries and art museums.
The development of a new architectural form, museums, had greatly changed the traditional classical
architectures into innovative modern architectures. Jayne Merkel, a historian and critic, identifies three
elements that control and define this development in museums as lighting, security, and procession
through space. Unlike those traditional rectilinear space that isolated from the outside world where
even light were mostly artificial, museums are now increasingly open to natural light and paying more
attention on introducing strong spacial experience of the visitors.
Lighting in museums, especially art museum, is crucial for creating best views of exhibitions.
Controlling the lighting is particularly important that it should have minimum damage to the arts. This
is especially challenging in art museums with full glass roofing, for

EED 465 Curriculum, Methods, and Assessment: Social Studies

December 8, 2011
Interview and Standards Investigation Social studies is a complicated subject for teachers to teach and
for students to learn because it encompasses so many different disciplines. On top of that, society is
characterized by increasingly rapid social and technological changes that affect what social studies
content is being taught to students (NCSS, 1988). For many years students have been forced to learn
low cognitive level information that lacks meaning and fails to transfer to real life situations. For these

In spite of the demands of high stakes testing, when Ms. Smith realized that social studies was
beginning to slowly disappear from the curriculum altogether she decided to take a stand. Ms. Smith is
now the sixth grade English and World History Department Head at Claremore Public Schools.
Although she does teach from a textbook, Ms. Smith employs numerous hands on activities to convey
subject matter to the students. For each section the students must create a project that coincides with
the lesson. Her favorite section is on the Middle Ages in Europe. During this lesson the entire sixth
grade participates in meaningful learning activities such as making head gear and shields, memorizing
poems from this era that they must recite to their classmates, and learning the requirements for
becoming a knight or a lady. Students earn certificates for acts of chivalry and the individuals who
have the most certificates at the end of the unit are awarded a crown as 6th grade King and Queen.
The unit culminates with a field trip to the Renaissance Festival and the Castle of Muskogee, a
landmark in Oklahoma, which is where the Renaissance Festival is held (Personal Communication, T.
Smith, December 12, 2011). These activities are much more meaningful than simply reading the text
and completing the section review. This allows students to

Framing Analysis
Have you ever seen a story in the news that has been told multiple ways depending on which news
station you were tuning in to? This tends to happen very often in the news industry and why this
happens is because of framing. Framing is a way to present certain content in a way to guide an
audience s interpretation along certain lines. How the news does this is by having the gatekeepers,
which are the people in charge decide which group of facts are most important to share to the public to
help promote a particular view of that story. Recently in the news everyone has been talking about
Colin Powell and his leaked emails talking about both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Colin
Powell is an American statesman who is part of the republican ... Show more content on

Each news outlet has a different way of framing this story and this is based on either which party they
support or what there company wants them to talk about. CBS chose to frame this story by talking
about both candidates and how Colin Powell thought both candidates were just as bad. FoxNews
framed the story to make it seem like Colin Powell only talked about Hillary Clinton in his emails and
not trump at all, which shows you how they want you to view Hillary Clinton as an evil person. Reuter
framed the story by making it seem like Colin Powell really hated Donald Trump and didn t really
care for Hillary Clinton, which made her seem not as bad. Picking what news station you want to tune
into is extremely important because you want to make sure you get an outlet that has a common
ground and you aren t only hearing one side to the story. The hero that is being portrayed in this news
story is Colin Powell because he is the only one stating his opinion on how he feels and is being real,
which is what people like to hear. On the other hand the villain being portrayed depends on what news
outlet you are looking at. If you re looking at CBS and Reuter both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump
are the villains, but with

The Scarlet Ibis Character Analysis
Family does not make problems disappear, and families do not disappear when problems arise.
Loyalty and protection are often found in family units due to the strength the family acquires by
working together. In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the older brother, referred to as Brother, chooses
to help his younger sibling, Doodle, by sacrificing his time and energy to help him rise above his
exceptionality and be more accepted by society. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is forced to
endure the long and dangerous journey home to be with his family. How Odysseus fights horrendous
monsters to see his family and Brother helps Doodle surpass his disability, shows that family bonds
can conquer any of their monsters, be it internal or external.
In The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle is born physically handicapped and cannot walk. However, his brother has
an extraordinary idea, he declares, I m going to teach you how to walk, Doodle (Hurst 2). Out of a
desire to see his younger brother become more normal, Brother helps Doodle rise above his
disabilities. Family will always aid each other no matter how bad the situation is, even if one member
is a burden. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is on the enchanting island of Ogygia, home of the nymph
Calypso. Even though the sight is breathtaking, and the island is a paradise, Odysseus yearns to go
home to his family. Homer expresses this when he writes, But as for the great Odysseus...he sat on a
headland weeping there as always, wrenching his

The Difficult Foreign Policy Issues Faced by Late...
The 20th century consisted of many difficult and controversial foreign policy decisions. From
President Jimmy Carter, elected in 1977, to President Ronald Regan elected in 1981. Carter attempted
at peacemaking efforts to help bring stability to the Middle East, but faced the challenge of the Iran
Hostage Crisis in 1979. He shaped his foreign policy through integrity, morality, and honest, to bring
trust in the government to the American citizens as the previous president, Richard Nixon made the
people lost their trust in the government. Ronald Regan supported a conservative foreign policy and
greatly increased military spending, putting the United States in huge deficit. Ronald Regan is also
given credit for the end of the Cold War, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was considered his biggest foreign policy crisis, and damaged his presidency, as he was
considered to handle the situation inappropriately. Carter also made attempts to improve relations with
the Soviet Union, but instead exacerbated the situation, and Carter s commitment to human rights
divided the United States and the Soviet Union further. Matters worsened when Carter tried to pass
SALT II, limiting weapons further then set by SALT I.
Ronald Regan, elected in 1981, took a tough stand on communism, and is credited for the downfall of
communism and the Soviet Union. As the polish government cracked down on Solidarity, an
independent labor party, Regan abandoned the policy on détente, and called for economic sanctions to
force the communist backed government to end martial law. Regan s foreign policy also called aid to
Latin America, as he feared communism would take over their weak economy. Aid was also sent to
the Middle East as religious conflicts threatened the already unsound region. In 1984 however, Regan
withdrew the American forces, admitting the attempt a failure. Terrorism also played a role in shaping
Regan s policy as Terrorism continued on its rise, raising global concern.
Regan ran for a second term and won the election of 1984. He then reshaped his foreign policy to
accommodate the changes of the Soviet Union. In 1985, a new leader emerged in the Soviet Union,

Cultural Norms And Values Of Kazakhstan And Its People
Sometimes close mindedness stops the average American to look at the diversity of our country, after
all, it is a country of immigrants that for years has become more globalized than one might like or
even accept. North America is not the only country that has adopted the culturist diversion. In this
country analysis of culture gazes at a country still primitive in some areas, and is also considered a
country of immigrants. Kazakhstan, since the end of time, has gained many diverse groups of people;
since the Soviet Union rule in Central Asia civilizations have moved in and out of the region (Interfax
2014). People living like primitives, in some ways, still live in the sparse country, but the region
contains more than just the nomads; it also has strong cultural roots that lay back to the more primitive
times.
This analysis will increase cultural awareness through the understanding of culture norms and values
of Kazakhstan and its people. The Central Asian country borders China, and Russia, amongst other
poor countries, is filled with grand culture and folklore. Gaining a vast understanding of the countries
different dialects, people, religions, food, and traditions; to name a few. First, discovering the true
meaning of culture, what does it mean? What are culture differences between two different cultures
living in America, and why is tradition important in Culture? Then, we categorize the five

Worldview Of The Bhagavad Gita
The Bhagavad Gita looks at the purpose of life in their own unique way. Cycles of human life can be
perceived on varying levels, dependent on your religion and beliefs. When considering the Hindu
beliefs, their worldviews can be described as the actions you enforce here on earth, motivated by
either desire or duty. When living in a world dominated by personal inclinations, it is easy to fall into
the temptations of selfish desire. Krishna radiates his concerns of exactly this in the form of
apprehension, keeping his people s best interests in mind. Due to the Hindu belief of reincarnation, the
pressures of enforcing your actions through duty, not desire, is essential to restoring your karma .
Regardless the worldview each religion holds, I understand that everyone s common goal is joy in
some form. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna establishes the worldview of Hinduism, while allowing for
explanation of worldly desire and the cycle of life.
Each religion provides a quite hopeful ambiance. Hinduism in particular, allows for a guideline to all
who will listen about eternal hope. Every being is faced with the choice of action, either by duty or
desire. Krishna is yearning to voice to humanity that if our actions are inclined by any form of desire,
it will cloud our understanding and only result in deeper, endless indulgences. This temptation of
earthly desires can be controlled by the essence of self control, eventually leading to tranquility and
joy. Although humanly urges may

Analysis Of My Three Favorite Characters From Chaucer s...
Interesting Characters
(An Analysis of my Three Favorite Characters from Chaucer s General Prologue)
Chaucer was a writer from the Anglo Saxon Era in which he did many significant things in his short
life. He is known to this day as the father of our language as we know it today. He wrote the series of
stories called the Canterbury Tales, which consist of many different characters that each tell a story. In
these series of stories he is us using the characters to express his mind and feelings towards the
church. Chaucer is upset with the church because he knows what they are doing and how corrupt they
really are. How the priests are supposed to be poor, but instead they tell the people that come to
confess that everything will be alright if they give the priests a certain amount of currency. Also how
the priests are not suppose to have intercourse because they are married to the church, but yet they are
getting with women. The purpose of the tales is to make a political point on the hypocrisy of the
church and the inequality of women to men. Of the twentyfive characters in the General Prologue
there were three that stood out to me the most. The three characters are, The Squire, The Friar, and
The Cook. To begin, the Squire from the General Prologue peaked my interest for many reasons. The
physical characteristics of the Squire are extraordinary such as his luscious hair with the smooth curls.
He is fairly tall, very strong and athletic. This just makes me wonder what

The Heroes Of The Trojan War
There are many hero stories in Greek mythology. Many of these can be interpreted as metaphors when
making comparisons to the lives and encounters people today experience. Many Greek myths
influenced important pieces of historic literature which have made it easier for people to find their
own ways of making these personal connections and better understanding their lives. The Trojan war
involved several heroes however Achilles is one that can easily be related to many athletes. Achilles
role in the Trojan war has many common themes that can be related to the story of Cleveland Browns
quarterback Johnny Manziel and his journey to the National Football Leauge. Both hero and athlete
were considered saviours, they were both very emotional men, and lastly they both enjoyed great
success before experiencing failure through their different achilles heels.
Johnny Paul Manziel is a quarterback for the American football team the Cleveland Browns of the
National Football League. He was drafted 22nd overall in the 2014 draft and was considered one of
the most appealing young quarterbacks of his generation. Manziel attended Texas A M University
from 2011 until 2013 on a full athletic scholarship. It was in his first season with Texas A M that he

Lianyungang China Book Report
Life and times working in Lianyungang China
Many Americans are currently working in China, about 70,000 in mainland China alone. Most are in
the medical or education field and are in the larger, more Westernized cities such as Beijing or
Shanghai. My story is a little different. Mine is one of a FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics)
inspector for FSE (Fiberglass Structural Engineering). The simplest way to explain to most people not
in the industry is to refer to it simply as Fiberglass Inspector (and NO not the pick stuff in your attic). I
was working at a facility located in Lianyungang which is located in the Jiangsu province of Eastern
China. Located about halfway between Beijing and Shanghai. Lianyungang is mostly an industrial

I started researching what the local attractions were. I read about a famous story that was written by
Mr. Wu Cheng en in Ming Dynasty, Journey to the West, which is originated in Lianyungang. Part of
this story takes place on Huanguo mountain. Huanguo mountain was located not very far from where I
was staying. As it appears in the book it is a mountain inhabited by demons and monkeys. And while
there are a few monkeys to be found along the way, demons were (thankfully) notable in their
absence. In my journey to the top of the mountain I found many interesting things to see. There were
temples, homes, and wonderful scenery. Once I reached the top of the mountain there was a statue.
The best interpretation I got was that it was equal to what we would refer to as an angel. It had many
ribbons tied to it. The ribbons are tied to the symbol by a person asking for good fortune. There was
also a centralized monument that many young people were stilling under playing some sort of card
game. Off to the side there was a marker that marked the very top of the mountain. As I was admiring
the marker I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was a young girl, probably around 18 or 19. She was with a
couple friends. She asked, in broken English if she and her friends may take a picture with me. I said
of course you can. It was then that I realized that not only was I admiring all the attractions, I became
one. Once I was done with the picture session I found an older gentleman that had a monkey. As I
approached him he pointed at my cell phone and was giving me a take a picture gesture. He proceeded
to place the monkey on my hand a take a picture. I tipped him went on my way. This was one of the

Civil Disobedience As A Form Of Eco-Terrorism
This section will clarify how Earth First and their actions are representative of those who are civil
disobedient, and not actions of an eco terrorist organisation. One only has to compare Earth First with
other more violent environmental terrorist groups such as ELF (Earth Liberation Front) to see the lack
of continuity amongst more violent eco terrorist groups. In 1986, ELF torched a ski resort in protest
against the use of timber in which arsonists caused $12 26 million in damage, and as a result affected
the well being of the native Canadian lynx. Furthermore, over the past decade, the group has claimed
responsibility for further attacks estimated to exceed over $100 million in damage. There is a distinct
difference between those who submit to civil disobedience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Dr Jennifer Welchman of the University of Alberta notes how covert sabotage, acts of violence and
assault (traits shown by ELF ) were all means by which legal practices may be deliberately obstructed
implying motives for terrorism. She continues to mention how acts such as tree spiking however, do
not pose as great as threat. Those affected were adequately warned of the risks handling affected trees.
Welchman believes that such actions do not appear to stretch civility to the breaking point. Thus we
should recognise eco sabotage as form of civil disobedience , stating that it should not be classed as
form of eco terrorism. Professor Michael Walzer of Social Sciences at Princeton mentions a crucial
difference between Eco Terrorism and other tactics. According to him Terrorism has no boundaries,
and has no consideration for the law. Walzer states how it breaks across moral limits beyond which no
further limitation seems possible . According to Walzer, for Earth First to have been deemed an eco
terrorist group, all members would have had to consciously and explicitly reject all moral limits on
their actions. They would have sought exert power exclusively through the spread of fear and

Collectivization Of The Soviet Union
The date is May 8, 1945, the second world war has just come to an end and the allies had to decide the
future of Europe. To accomplish this the allies formed the Potsdam conference, which met on August
2, 1945. The events that led up to and during the time of the Eastern Bloc can teach people many
things in regard to all aspects of life.
The Soviet Union was established in 1918 under a Communist regime, which replaced the old
monarchy ruled by the Czar. However soon after 1918 a massive forced development of the Soviet
Union and all their republics began. During this period of development, the Soviet Union carried out
the policy of collectivization. Collectivization was the seizure of private land, objects and other things
for the purpose of a collective use. However farms were not the only things collectivized, many other
industries such as factories and mines became a collective as well. All of these changes almost
destroyed the Soviet Union, but in the end made it stronger than it ever had been before. The
collectivization of land and industry would help save the Soviet Union during the Nazi invasion
during world war two. Collectivization provided the Soviet Union with the strength and unity needed
to fend off a Nazi invasion.
The Eastern Bloc was created by the Soviet Union after world war two to be used as a buffer zone
between them and the west. This was needed because of how vastly different the two societies were,
with the Communist east against the Capitalist

Why Overfishing Is Bad
Fishing is a great hobby for the average Joe. People fish for fun, family bonding, and to make a living.
Overfishing, defined as excessive fishing to an extent, damages local ecology. Overfishing.org , found

much that the fish cannot sustain their population . This means that too many fish are taken out of the

Examples Of Stamina In Night By Elie Wiesel
The Holocaust was a time of great suffering and hopelessness for Jewish people. About two thirds of
the entire Jewish population was brutally killed. One third of all Jews persevered and survived the
appalling events happening in and out of the concentration camps. One boy, out of that one third that
survived and pushed through was Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel, the holocaust survivor, displays stamina in
his memoir physically, mentally, and spiritually.
First off, Elie Wiesel demonstrates stamina by proving his perseverance physically. In the memoir
Night, the text states, I went straight to my block. My wound had reopened and was bleeding: the
snow under my feet turned red (pg. 82). The example tells how Elie didn t stay in the infirmary and
went back to his block. While walking, his fresh wound reopened and bled. This can prove that Wiesel

The memoir claims, Eight simple short words. Yet that was the moment when I left my mother... And I
walked with my father, with the men (pg. 29). The text explains how Elie left his mother and
continued on with the men. This can prove to be mental stamina because instead of being sad and
miserable about leaving his mother, he stays strong and continues walking. Additionally, Wiesel shows
mental perseverance by not showing his emotions when someone got hanged. In Elie Wiesel s
memoir, he says, I remember that on that evening, the soup tasted better than ever...(pg. 63). The
example describes an instance where Wiesel says that the soup tasted great that evening. He says this
because watching the hanging didn t bother him because he had witnessed so many other acts of
dehumanization previously. This example shows stamina because he is demonstrating that he is not
bothered by the horrifying act and is acting like nothing is off. Elie Wiesel proves his mental

Imagine believing a fantasy only to be faced with a harsh reality. In Pico Iyer s Essay, Where World
Collide, Iyer depicts multiple bustling scenes he witnesses at the Los Angeles International Airport
(LAX). Through his interactions, his observations of travelers at the airport, and his own perceptions
based on his viewpoint as an immigrant traveling to a land often fantasized about, Iyer makes several
assertions about Los Angeles. Through diction, juxtapositions, humor, and anecdotes in his essay, Iyer
demonstrates that Los Angeles is not some wonderful fantasy that many believe it to be; but that it is
instead representative of the cultural melting pot that is the world. Iyer begins the piece on a rather
vague note. He introduces the essay in third person referring to they . Although this they is not
revealed until further paragraphs, through his descriptions of places and concepts related to Los
Angeles, such as the Dodgers, Disneyland, or airport shuttles, the reader soon can conclude that this
they are travelers and they are at no other than LAX. Through his use of third person Iyer helps to
show multiple perspectives of how coming to Los Angeles may be. In each of these perspectives he
highlights the enthusiasm of these travelers thus helping to strengthen his assertion that to many
newcomers, Los Angeles is often a fantasy. He also introduces the concept of Los Angeles being like a
dream to immigrants and tourists through his use of diction when referencing Los

Although it is true that , words as Chetniks while referring to Serbs and certain unease from the

it is hardly the main focus and reason for violence. Historical grievances and animosities are not

emphasized enough while attempting to explain what account for violence in local communities in
Bosnia, as well as, what I personally found to be the most persuasive and insightful in their
explanation. Starting with Bringa film We Are All Neighbours I find that although image speaks a

Metabolic Alkalosis Lab Report
Metabolic alkalosis is a primary increase in serum bicarbonate (HCO3 ) concentration. This occurs as
a consequence of a loss of H+ from the body or a gain in HCO3 . In its pure form, it manifests as
alkalemia (pH 7.40). As a compensatory mechanism, metabolic alkalosis leads to alveolar
hypoventilation with a rise in arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), which diminishes the change in
pH that would otherwise occur.
Normally, arterial PaCO2 increases by 0.5 0.7 mm Hg for every 1 mEq/L increase in plasma
bicarbonate concentration, a compensatory response that is very quick. If the change in PaCO2 is not
within this range, then a mixed acid base disturbance occurs. For example, if the increase in PaCO2 is
more than 0.7 times the increase in bicarbonate, then metabolic alkalosis coexists with primary
respiratory acidosis. Likewise, if the increase in PaCO2 is less than the expected change, then a
primary respiratory alkalosis is also present. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Remember that an elevated serum bicarbonate concentration may also be observed as a compensatory
response to primary respiratory acidosis. However, a bicarbonate concentration greater than 35 mEq/L
is almost always caused by metabolic alkalosis.
Metabolic alkalosis is diagnosed by measuring serum electrolytes and arterial blood gases. If the
etiology of metabolic alkalosis is not clear from the clinical history and physical examination,
including drug use and the presence of hypertension, then a urine chloride ion concentration can be
obtained. Calculation of the serum anion gap may also help to differentiate between primary metabolic
alkalosis and metabolic compensation for respiratory acidosis. (See

The Gospels Of The New Testament
The Themes of the Four Gospels
Introduction
The Gospels of the New Testament are ancient biographies focused primarily on an individual s
character. Biographers told their audiences about events they thought would present the person s
character effectively. These biographies focused on the circumstances of the individual s birth, what
other s said about him or her, and the person s own actions and statements. The Gospels complement
one another as they present four different aspects of Jesus earthly mission.
The Gospel of Matthew
Matthew presents Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, the Son of David In addition, the Fourth Gospel
introduce a greater degree of testimonies that Jesus is the divine Son of God and prophesied Messiah.
The Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke consist of many parallel material whereas 90 percent
of John s gospel is unique.
The Gospel of Mark
The two major themes in the Gospel of Mark are Jesus, the Son of God and Jesus, the King. The book
of Mark introduces Jesus is to an audience of Roman Christians in chapter one and verse one. Jesus
Christ is the Son of God. Then, Mark gives evidence for proclaiming Jesus as the Son of God in the
next few verses by quoting the scripture from the book of Isaiah, the Prophet. It says,
As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one calling in the desert,
Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him (Mark 3:4).

America s Role In World War I
What triggered World War I? The main reason still remains unanswered. World War I was one of the
most horrific wars that the world has ever experienced. The war was fought in Europe between
Germany, Russia, France, Great Britain, the U.S. and many others. Militarism, alliance systems and
imperialist were some of the causes that set off the one of the greatest wars in the history of the world.
Militarism played a vast role in WWI. Since Germany s nation was industrialized, they invested
millions of dollars refining their military to make it ready for war. In order for all the other countries
to compete with them, they had to update their armies as well. With all the military improvements,
Germany was extremely anxious to make a use of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the United States embarked on a famine relief program in the Soviet Union in the early
1920s and American businessmen established commercial ties there during the period of the New
Economic Policy, the two countries did not start diplomatic relations until 1933. By that time, the
oppressive nature of Joseph Stalin s command presented an impossible obstacle to friendly relations
with the West. Although World War II brought the two countries into alliance, based on the common
aim of defeating Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union s aggressive, antidemocratic policy toward Eastern
Europe had created tensions even before the war ended.
Fear of communism significantly affected American domestic policy with regard to both immigration
policy and workers rights. In the 1920s, the United States experienced its first Red Scare soon after
Russia s Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 brought communism to the forefront of people s minds. In the
1950s, the U.S. experienced a similar wave of anti communist fear during the first phases of the Cold
War. Overall, this anti communist fear led to both social and economic

I. Introduction
World War I was an epic war in the history of mankind. It is purportedly the sixth largest war in
human history. And in its eventuality nearly 32 countries were involved. (Townshend, 1997 ) Both
sides, the Allies and the Central Powers were fighting for power and world dominance, and both were
equally strong and populous. Moreover, military tactics were old following from Napoleonic wars,
whereas arms and equipment were innovated. Therefore, each side had to first learn the ways of using
these weapons and in their experiments with the weaponry in war killed thousands of people with
neither side being able to claim categorical victory.
The war carried on for nearly four year, and while it may not have been the longest war, its nature was
indecisive and had Germany not stopped and called for an armistice, there would have been more
fighting and killing.

Is The Difference Between The Crocker-Harris And Jay s...
The post war era in the UK, was a time of austerity and harsh living conditions, even though the
economic situation of the country was looking like it was about to bloom. The play The Browning
Version written by Terence Rattigan in 1948 explores the idea of relationships being based on power
and dominance rather than on love and contribution. This piece, allows the reader to experience the
simplistic life of the Crocker Harris household and the tangled unusual relationships that they seem to
encounter in their everyday life. By presenting disloyalty, jealousy and authority the author explores
the extent to which the relationships amongst characters are predominantly based on power, rather

Tokugawa Shogunate: Strengths and Weaknesses

History 483
Professor John H. Sagers
6 August 2010
The death of emperor Hideyoshi and subsequent ascension to the throne of Hideyori in 1598 set into
motion events that would alter the political landscape in Japan for the next two hundred and fifty
years. Tokugawa Ieyasu, in his quest to become absolute ruler of Japan defeated Hideyori loyalists in
the battle of Sekigahara and was appointed Shogun by Hideyori in 1603. This military coup d état
effectively gave Tokugawa complete control of Japan and reduced the emperor to little more than a
figurehead in the governing of Japan. As history would show, the feudal system of government that
Tokugawa created ultimately led to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The primary beneficiaries of the emerging money economy were the merchants. Daimyo and samurai
traded their rice for money with the merchants who soon became very rich. Merchants, cashing in on
daimyo debt attained positions of authority within the daimyo households. Many were living lavish
lifestyles only dreamt of by samurai. This caused resentment in Japanese society because, although
they were socially inferior, merchants enjoyed an elevated status economically (Kunihiko 1997).
Perhaps the social class that suffered the most indignities was the samurai who, lacking the means to
earn a living on their regular income, indulged in the lifestyle of Edo. Many had to resort to engaging
in handicraft for income vice training at the martial arts thus leading to inherent corruption
(Nobumitsu 1997).
Ultimately, the Tokugawa shogunate wanted to maintain political and social stability in Japan. By
seizing power, Ieyasu was able to quell domestic unrest but another threat was still presented for total
control. Foreign influence proved to be a serious threat to stability within Japan. The initial threat to
Japan was presented by Christian missionaries. After an initial introduction to Christianity, the
shogunate conducted a purging and outlawed the religion. This led to a prolonged isolation of
Japanese society from Western influence. The shogunate wished to prevent daimyo from conspiring
with foreigners thus

The Greatest Good And Pain
In evaluating the philosopher s goal of determining how to live a good life, Epicurean philosophers
argue that pleasure is the greatest good and pain is the greatest bad. Foremost, for the purpose of this
analysis, I must define the pleasure and pain described. Pleasure is seen as the state of being pleased
or gratified. This term is defined more specifically by the subject to which the pleasure applies,
depending on what he likes. Pain is the opposite of pleasure, which is a type of emotional or physical
un pleasure that results in something that the person dislikes. Everything in which we rejoice is
pleasure, just as everything that distresses us is pain, (Cicero 1). Through this hedonistic assessment of
pleasure and pain, epicurean philosophers come to the conclusion that, the greatest pleasure [is that]
which is perceived once all pain has been removed, (Epicurus 1).
I support this idea of achieving absolute pleasure from the removal of all pain due to a series of
corresponding reasons. The first factor addressed in support of this claim is the tendency of human
nature to focus on the negative. This observation will lead to the second supporting idea that these
distresses which culminate towards the feeling of pain often block out the feeling of the pleasure
desired. This secondary notion results in a comparison between the subsequent uplifting experiences
from the removal of pain as opposed to the effect of a simple everyday pleasure on the mind. I

  • 2. Environmental Protection Is A Trending Topic Environmental protection is a trending topic not only in industries but also in architectures. Finding a solution that could minimum the pollution to surrounding environment and save the resources at the same time is crucial for architects in the process of design. Large amount of architects accepted the practice of involving more daylight in their architects to save more resources. An abundant supply of natural lighting can also save money and improve the visual quality of the environment. However, for buildings with different functions, the usage and requirement of light are also different, in particular, the libraries and art museums. The development of a new architectural form, museums, had greatly changed the traditional classical architectures into innovative modern architectures. Jayne Merkel, a historian and critic, identifies three elements that control and define this development in museums as lighting, security, and procession through space. Unlike those traditional rectilinear space that isolated from the outside world where even light were mostly artificial, museums are now increasingly open to natural light and paying more attention on introducing strong spacial experience of the visitors. Lighting in museums, especially art museum, is crucial for creating best views of exhibitions. Controlling the lighting is particularly important that it should have minimum damage to the arts. This is especially challenging in art museums with full glass roofing, for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Social Studies Interview and Standards Investigation Running Head: INTERVIEW AND STANDARDS INVESTIGATION Interview and Standards Investigation Sarah Woods Grand Canyon University EED 465 Curriculum, Methods, and Assessment: Social Studies Leah Barley December 8, 2011 Interview and Standards Investigation Social studies is a complicated subject for teachers to teach and for students to learn because it encompasses so many different disciplines. On top of that, society is characterized by increasingly rapid social and technological changes that affect what social studies content is being taught to students (NCSS, 1988). For many years students have been forced to learn low cognitive level information that lacks meaning and fails to transfer to real life situations. For these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In spite of the demands of high stakes testing, when Ms. Smith realized that social studies was beginning to slowly disappear from the curriculum altogether she decided to take a stand. Ms. Smith is now the sixth grade English and World History Department Head at Claremore Public Schools. Although she does teach from a textbook, Ms. Smith employs numerous hands on activities to convey subject matter to the students. For each section the students must create a project that coincides with the lesson. Her favorite section is on the Middle Ages in Europe. During this lesson the entire sixth grade participates in meaningful learning activities such as making head gear and shields, memorizing poems from this era that they must recite to their classmates, and learning the requirements for becoming a knight or a lady. Students earn certificates for acts of chivalry and the individuals who have the most certificates at the end of the unit are awarded a crown as 6th grade King and Queen. The unit culminates with a field trip to the Renaissance Festival and the Castle of Muskogee, a landmark in Oklahoma, which is where the Renaissance Festival is held (Personal Communication, T. Smith, December 12, 2011). These activities are much more meaningful than simply reading the text and completing the section review. This allows students to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Framing Analysis Have you ever seen a story in the news that has been told multiple ways depending on which news station you were tuning in to? This tends to happen very often in the news industry and why this happens is because of framing. Framing is a way to present certain content in a way to guide an audience s interpretation along certain lines. How the news does this is by having the gatekeepers, which are the people in charge decide which group of facts are most important to share to the public to help promote a particular view of that story. Recently in the news everyone has been talking about Colin Powell and his leaked emails talking about both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Colin Powell is an American statesman who is part of the republican ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each news outlet has a different way of framing this story and this is based on either which party they support or what there company wants them to talk about. CBS chose to frame this story by talking about both candidates and how Colin Powell thought both candidates were just as bad. FoxNews framed the story to make it seem like Colin Powell only talked about Hillary Clinton in his emails and not trump at all, which shows you how they want you to view Hillary Clinton as an evil person. Reuter framed the story by making it seem like Colin Powell really hated Donald Trump and didn t really care for Hillary Clinton, which made her seem not as bad. Picking what news station you want to tune into is extremely important because you want to make sure you get an outlet that has a common ground and you aren t only hearing one side to the story. The hero that is being portrayed in this news story is Colin Powell because he is the only one stating his opinion on how he feels and is being real, which is what people like to hear. On the other hand the villain being portrayed depends on what news outlet you are looking at. If you re looking at CBS and Reuter both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the villains, but with ... • 5. The Scarlet Ibis Character Analysis Family does not make problems disappear, and families do not disappear when problems arise. Loyalty and protection are often found in family units due to the strength the family acquires by working together. In The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the older brother, referred to as Brother, chooses to help his younger sibling, Doodle, by sacrificing his time and energy to help him rise above his exceptionality and be more accepted by society. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is forced to endure the long and dangerous journey home to be with his family. How Odysseus fights horrendous monsters to see his family and Brother helps Doodle surpass his disability, shows that family bonds can conquer any of their monsters, be it internal or external. In The Scarlet Ibis, Doodle is born physically handicapped and cannot walk. However, his brother has an extraordinary idea, he declares, I m going to teach you how to walk, Doodle (Hurst 2). Out of a desire to see his younger brother become more normal, Brother helps Doodle rise above his disabilities. Family will always aid each other no matter how bad the situation is, even if one member is a burden. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is on the enchanting island of Ogygia, home of the nymph Calypso. Even though the sight is breathtaking, and the island is a paradise, Odysseus yearns to go home to his family. Homer expresses this when he writes, But as for the great Odysseus...he sat on a headland weeping there as always, wrenching his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was considered his biggest foreign policy crisis, and damaged his presidency, as he was considered to handle the situation inappropriately. Carter also made attempts to improve relations with the Soviet Union, but instead exacerbated the situation, and Carter s commitment to human rights divided the United States and the Soviet Union further. Matters worsened when Carter tried to pass SALT II, limiting weapons further then set by SALT I. Ronald Regan, elected in 1981, took a tough stand on communism, and is credited for the downfall of communism and the Soviet Union. As the polish government cracked down on Solidarity, an independent labor party, Regan abandoned the policy on détente, and called for economic sanctions to force the communist backed government to end martial law. Regan s foreign policy also called aid to Latin America, as he feared communism would take over their weak economy. Aid was also sent to the Middle East as religious conflicts threatened the already unsound region. In 1984 however, Regan withdrew the American forces, admitting the attempt a failure. Terrorism also played a role in shaping Regan s policy as Terrorism continued on its rise, raising global concern. Regan ran for a second term and won the election of 1984. Cultural Norms And Values Of Kazakhstan And Its People Sometimes close mindedness stops the average American to look at the diversity of our country, after all, it is a country of immigrants that for years has become more globalized than one might like or even accept. • 11. Worldview Of The Bhagavad Gita The Bhagavad Gita looks at the purpose of life in their own unique way. Cycles of human life can be perceived on varying levels, dependent on your religion and beliefs. When considering the Hindu beliefs, their worldviews can be described as the actions you enforce here on earth, motivated by either desire or duty. When living in a world dominated by personal inclinations, it is easy to fall into the temptations of selfish desire. Krishna radiates his concerns of exactly this in the form of apprehension, keeping his people s best interests in mind. Due to the Hindu belief of reincarnation, the pressures of enforcing your actions through duty, not desire, is essential to restoring your karma . Regardless the worldview each religion holds, I understand that everyone s common goal is joy in some form. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna establishes the worldview of Hinduism, while allowing for explanation of worldly desire and the cycle of life. Each religion provides a quite hopeful ambiance. Hinduism in particular, allows for a guideline to all who will listen about eternal hope. Every being is faced with the choice of action, either by duty or desire. Krishna is yearning to voice to humanity that if our actions are inclined by any form of desire, it will cloud our understanding and only result in deeper, endless indulgences. This temptation of earthly desires can be controlled by the essence of self control, eventually leading to tranquility and joy. Although humanly urges may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Analysis Of My Three Favorite Characters From Chaucer s... Interesting Characters (An Analysis of my Three Favorite Characters from Chaucer s General Prologue) Chaucer was a writer from the Anglo Saxon Era in which he did many significant things in his short life. He is known to this day as the father of our language as we know it today. He wrote the series of stories called the Canterbury Tales, which consist of many different characters that each tell a story. In these series of stories he is us using the characters to express his mind and feelings towards the church. Chaucer is upset with the church because he knows what they are doing and how corrupt they really are. How the priests are supposed to be poor, but instead they tell the people that come to confess that everything will be alright if they give the priests a certain amount of currency. Also how the priests are not suppose to have intercourse because they are married to the church, but yet they are getting with women. The purpose of the tales is to make a political point on the hypocrisy of the church and the inequality of women to men. Of the twentyfive characters in the General Prologue there were three that stood out to me the most. The three characters are, The Squire, The Friar, and The Cook. To begin, the Squire from the General Prologue peaked my interest for many reasons. The physical characteristics of the Squire are extraordinary such as his luscious hair with the smooth curls. He is fairly tall, very strong and athletic. This just makes me wonder what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Heroes Of The Trojan War There are many hero stories in Greek mythology. The Trojan war involved several heroes however Achilles is one that can easily be related to many athletes. Achilles role in the Trojan war has many common themes that can be related to the story of Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel and his journey to the National Football Leauge. There were temples, homes, and wonderful scenery. Once I reached the top of the mountain there was a statue. The best interpretation I got was that it was equal to what we would refer to as an angel. It had many ribbons tied to it. The ribbons are tied to the symbol by a person asking for good fortune. There was also a centralized monument that many young people were stilling under playing some sort of card game. Off to the side there was a marker that marked the very top of the mountain. As I was admiring the marker I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was a young girl, probably around 18 or 19. She was with a couple friends. She asked, in broken English if she and her friends may take a picture with me. I said of course you can. It was then that I realized that not only was I admiring all the attractions, I became one. Once I was done with the picture session I found an older gentleman that had a monkey. As I approached him he pointed at my cell phone and was giving me a take a picture gesture. He proceeded to place the monkey on my hand a take a picture. I tipped him went on my way. This was one of the most amazing days that I was in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Civil Disobedience As A Form Of Eco-Terrorism This section will clarify how Earth First and their actions are representative of those who are civil disobedient, and not actions of an eco terrorist organisation. One only has to compare Earth First with other more violent environmental terrorist groups such as ELF (Earth Liberation Front) to see the lack of continuity amongst more violent eco terrorist groups. In 1986, ELF torched a ski resort in protest against the use of timber in which arsonists caused $12 26 million in damage, and as a result affected the well being of the native Canadian lynx. Furthermore, over the past decade, the group has claimed responsibility for further attacks estimated to exceed over $100 million in damage. Dr Jennifer Welchman of the University of Alberta notes how covert sabotage, acts of violence and assault (traits shown by ELF ) were all means by which legal practices may be deliberately obstructed implying motives for terrorism. She continues to mention how acts such as tree spiking however, do not pose as great as threat. Those affected were adequately warned of the risks handling affected trees. Welchman believes that such actions do not appear to stretch civility to the breaking point. Thus we should recognise eco sabotage as form of civil disobedience , stating that it should not be classed as form of eco terrorism. Professor Michael Walzer of Social Sciences at Princeton mentions a crucial difference between Eco Terrorism and other tactics. According to him Terrorism has no boundaries, and has no consideration for the law. Walzer states how it breaks across moral limits beyond which no further limitation seems possible . • 18. Collectivization Of The Soviet Union The date is May 8, 1945, the second world war has just come to an end and the allies had to decide the future of Europe. To accomplish this the allies formed the Potsdam conference, which met on August 2, 1945. The events that led up to and during the time of the Eastern Bloc can teach people many things in regard to all aspects of life. The Soviet Union was established in 1918 under a Communist regime, which replaced the old monarchy ruled by the Czar. However soon after 1918 a massive forced development of the Soviet Union and all their republics began. During this period of development, the Soviet Union carried out the policy of collectivization. Collectivization was the seizure of private land, objects and other things for the purpose of a collective use. However farms were not the only things collectivized, many other industries such as factories and mines became a collective as well. All of these changes almost destroyed the Soviet Union, but in the end made it stronger than it ever had been before. The collectivization of land and industry would help save the Soviet Union during the Nazi invasion during world war two. Collectivization provided the Soviet Union with the strength and unity needed to fend off a Nazi invasion. The Eastern Bloc was created by the Soviet Union after world war two to be used as a buffer zone between them and the west. • 20. Examples Of Stamina In Night By Elie Wiesel The Holocaust was a time of great suffering and hopelessness for Jewish people. About two thirds of the entire Jewish population was brutally killed. One third of all Jews persevered and survived the appalling events happening in and out of the concentration camps. One boy, out of that one third that survived and pushed through was Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel, the holocaust survivor, displays stamina in his memoir physically, mentally, and spiritually. First off, Elie Wiesel demonstrates stamina by proving his perseverance physically. In the memoir Night, the text states, I went straight to my block. My wound had reopened and was bleeding: the snow under my feet turned red (pg. 82). The example tells how Elie didn t stay in the infirmary and went back to his block. Additionally, Wiesel shows mental perseverance by not showing his emotions when someone got hanged. In Elie Wiesel s memoir, he says, I remember that on that evening, the soup tasted better than ever...(pg. 63). In Pico Iyer s Essay, Where World Collide, Iyer depicts multiple bustling scenes he witnesses at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Through his interactions, his observations of travelers at the airport, and his own perceptions based on his viewpoint as an immigrant traveling to a land often fantasized about, Iyer makes several assertions about Los Angeles. Through diction, juxtapositions, humor, and anecdotes in his essay, Iyer demonstrates that Los Angeles is not some wonderful fantasy that many believe it to be; but that it is instead representative of the cultural melting pot that is the world. Iyer begins the piece on a rather vague note. He introduces the essay in third person referring to they . Although this they is not revealed until further paragraphs, through his descriptions of places and concepts related to Los Angeles, such as the Dodgers, Disneyland, or airport shuttles, the reader soon can conclude that this they are travelers and they are at no other than LAX. Through his use of third person Iyer helps to show multiple perspectives of how coming to Los Angeles may be. • 24. Metabolic Alkalosis Lab Report Metabolic alkalosis is a primary increase in serum bicarbonate (HCO3 ) concentration. This occurs as a consequence of a loss of H+ from the body or a gain in HCO3 . In its pure form, it manifests as alkalemia (pH 7.40). As a compensatory mechanism, metabolic alkalosis leads to alveolar hypoventilation with a rise in arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), which diminishes the change in pH that would otherwise occur. Normally, arterial PaCO2 increases by 0.5 0.7 mm Hg for every 1 mEq/L increase in plasma bicarbonate concentration, a compensatory response that is very quick. If the change in PaCO2 is not within this range, then a mixed acid base disturbance occurs. For example, if the increase in PaCO2 is more than 0.7 times the increase in bicarbonate, then metabolic alkalosis coexists with primary respiratory acidosis. Likewise, if the increase in PaCO2 is less than the expected change, then a primary respiratory alkalosis is also present. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the etiology of metabolic alkalosis is not clear from the clinical history and physical examination, including drug use and the presence of hypertension, then a urine chloride ion concentration can be obtained. The primary beneficiaries of the emerging money economy were the merchants. Daimyo and samurai traded their rice for money with the merchants who soon became very rich. Merchants, cashing in on daimyo debt attained positions of authority within the daimyo households. Many were living lavish lifestyles only dreamt of by samurai. This caused resentment in Japanese society because, although they were socially inferior, merchants enjoyed an elevated status economically (Kunihiko 1997). Perhaps the social class that suffered the most indignities was the samurai who, lacking the means to earn a living on their regular income, indulged in the lifestyle of Edo. Many had to resort to engaging in handicraft for income vice training at the martial arts thus leading to inherent corruption (Nobumitsu 1997). Ultimately, the Tokugawa shogunate wanted to maintain political and social stability in Japan. By seizing power, Ieyasu was able to quell domestic unrest but another threat was still presented for total control. Foreign influence proved to be a serious threat to stability within Japan. • 34. The Greatest Good And Pain In evaluating the philosopher s goal of determining how to live a good life, Epicurean philosophers argue that pleasure is the greatest good and pain is the greatest bad. Foremost, for the purpose of this analysis, I must define the pleasure and pain described. Pleasure is seen as the state of being pleased or gratified. This term is defined more specifically by the subject to which the pleasure applies, depending on what he likes. Pain is the opposite of pleasure, which is a type of emotional or physical un pleasure that results in something that the person dislikes. Everything in which we rejoice is pleasure, just as everything that distresses us is pain, (Cicero 1). Through this hedonistic assessment of pleasure and pain, epicurean philosophers come to the conclusion that, the greatest pleasure [is that] which is perceived once all pain has been removed, (Epicurus 1). I support this idea of achieving absolute pleasure from the removal of all pain due to a series of corresponding reasons. The first factor addressed in support of this claim is the tendency of human nature to focus on the negative. This observation will lead to the second supporting idea that these distresses which culminate towards the feeling of pain often block out the feeling of the pleasure desired. This secondary notion results in a comparison between the subsequent uplifting experiences from the removal of pain as opposed to the effect of a simple everyday pleasure on the mind. I ...
