Analysis Of The Book War By Sebastian Junger
There is a very large majority of material written and taken down about the Iraq/Afghan war, and our
libraries hold majority of these works of literature. This is a book review of the book War which is
authored by Sebastian Junger and published by Hatchett Book Group in May of 2010. Sebastian
Junger was an embedded reporter with the 2nd Platoon, Battle Company of the 173rd Airborne
Brigade for Vanity Fair magazine, and was entirely dependent on the U.S. military for food, shelter,
security, and transportation.1
This book is the result of five trips taken to Korengal Valley in eastern Afghanistan that were taken
between June 2007 and June 2008. Junger states that he was never asked directly or indirectly to alter
his reporting in any way or to show the contents of his camera. Junger is an American citizen and has
recollections of the terrorist s attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. With this in mind, it
could be cause for some bias reporting that may be presented and talked about through this book
review.
This memoir was written for the main reason of Junger being interested in Americans in Afghanistan.
He was interested in what it was like to serve in a platoon of combat infantry in the
U.S. Army.2 With this memoir in mind, Junger wanted to reach the American citizens as his audience
to show just what mindset the American soldiers were placed in during their time in Afghanistan.
Junger states that the moral basis of the war didn t seem to interest

United States Economy
According to the U.S. Labor Statistics 2011 report, when President Obama took office, the economy
was shedding nearly 800,000 jobs each month and millions of families were unable to make ends
meet. African Americans were hit especially hard by the recession struggling with significant
economic losses, including near record high levels of unemployment and low average earnings (U.S.
Labor Statistics 2011). From day one the President has made turning the economy around a top
priority, and the policies enacted through the Recovery Act of 2009 have had a significant impact on
the country s economic well being. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the
Recovery Act and later expansions and extensions kept 1.3 million African Americans above the
poverty line last year alone (Sherman 2009). And this year, the continued expansion of just two tax
credits the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child tax Credit has benefited an estimated 2.2 million
African American families and almost half of all African American children. The targeted tax relief
enacted by President Obama through both the Recovery Act and the December tax Deal has provided
relief to nearly every American, helping them bear the brunt of the recession and supporting them as
the economy has recovered (The President Agenda and the African American Community, November
2011 pg. 4). Last December, President Obama fought for and secured a 2 percent employee side
payroll tax cut (from 6.2

Disadvantages Of Single Rulebook
2.1.5 Single Rulebook
The single rulebook gives support to the banking union and it is important to the financial sector
regulation in the EU in general. It consists of legal acts that all financial institutions in the EU must
follow. The single rulebook, among other things:
highlights capital requirements for banks
makes better protection for depositors
regulates the prevention and management of bank failures
The single rulebook is based on pillars the rules are most important for the banking union are:
capital requirements directive IV (CRD IV) and capital requirements regulation (CRR)
amended directive on deposit guarantee schemes (DGS)
bank recovery and resolution directive (BRRD) (http://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/banking

The Negative Effects of Humans and Nature on Florida’s...
Nature designed Florida to be one large marine ecosystem. Florida is one big sand peninsula located
below the 40th longitudinal North American line. Three bodies of salt water (Gulf of Mexico, Strait of
Florida and Atlantic Ocean) surround three out of four directions of Florida. Man made canals, natural
lakes, rivers and estuaries are confined within the State of Florida s physical boundaries. All of these
form an interlocking system of waterways that impact the interconnected marine environment (marine
ecosystem). All of Florida s waterways are connected back to the surrounding bodies of water while
passing through Florida s sub tropical and temperate zones and impact the delicate marine ecosystem
balance. Man and nature are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of these areas has a historic recorded hit by one or more major hurricanes. Because hurricane
winds start at 75 mph and can reach up to 156 miles per hour or more, the damage of the winds can be
extensive (NOAA). Winds will rip the roof off of a house or tip over a mobile home. Debris is
scattered with bullet like force. Storm surge floods buildings, streets and lands. Hurricane spawned
tornado winds cause extra natural destruction. Finally, what little natural habitat is left untouched by
humans can be fully devastated by hurricane aftermath.
Most Atlantic hurricanes start out in the North Atlantic Ocean, which is called the hurricane breeding
ground. Rarely a hurricane will form in the Caribbean Sea and sometimes the Gulf of Mexico. The
extremely rare tropical storm is one forming right off of a landmass. This rarity occurred in the most
recent 2009 hurricane season with the eye of the tropical storm named Claudette coming ashore over
the Florida panhandle and reaching 60 mph of the 75 mph limit to be considered a category 1
hurricane (NOAA). Under average circumstances, once formed, a tropical storm will build up speed as
it spins across the warm shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico (NOAA)
building into a hurricane and then moving across the water until dissipating over a landmass. A
hurricane shifts the ocean s sand banks as

Merger and alliances to create new routes from Gatwick.
2.1 BRITISH MERGER AND ALLIANCES
The new group will combine the two companies in the UK and Spain and will enhance their presence
in the international long haul markets while retaining the individual brands and current positions of
each airline. British Airways and Iberia hope their new company International Airlines Group,
International Airlines Group, will position the pair for further consolidation in the global airline sector
as it emerges from a prolonged industry downturn and hope to compete with multinational rivals Air
France KLM and Lufthansa.
From a personal analysis it seems that the merger is likely to be more strategic for both companies as
Iberia is more dominant in South American destinations and British Airways flies to only three South
American destinations. The key benefit of the merger to BA would be the access to South America.
Similarly, Iberia will gain from BA s more extensive North American operations, with the two carriers
able to share information on fares, schedules and routes. They have identified Latin America as a
growth market, one where BA is under represented.
Willie Walsh has drawn a list of 12 possible airlines BA could merge with once the America airlines
and Iberia tie ups are completed. The choice of merging is positive in a sense that it will increase the
market share and BA has promised cheaper fares and even more jobs as part of a route sharing deal

Quasi Contracts
INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE OF QUASI CONTRACTS:
Under the general heading of the Quasi contract there has been grouped a number of cases which have
little or no affinity with contract. A simple illustration is afforded by the action to recover money paid
by mistake. If the plaintiff on an erroneous interpretation of the facts, pays to the defendant a sum of
money which he does not really owe, law, no less than justice, will require he defendant to restore it.
But his obligation is manifestly not based upon the consent, even in the extended meaning borne by
the word in the English law, and its description as a quasi contractual liability serves only to
emphasize its remoteness from any genuine conception of contract.
This shows that there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But Lord MANSFIELD preferred the latter theory that the bases for quasi contracts are for the
purpose of prevention of unjust enrichment. THEORY OF IMPLIED IN FACT CONTRACT:
The gist of this kind of action is that the defendant, upon the circumstances of the case, is obliged by
the ties of natural justice and equity to refund the money. But apart from this it should be observed
that did not use the word equity to denote the jurisdiction of chancery but the synonym for jus naturale
. Nor, while he based the obligations of quasi contract upon the duty of restoring benefits unjustly
obtained, did he assert that in every such case an action would lie. As he declared in Weston v.
Downes, I am a great friend to the action for money had and received, and therefore I am not
stretching, lest I should endanger it thus the principle of unjust benefit explained the cases falling
within the scope of quasi contracts: it did not automatically invoke the remedy.
Subject to these qualifications the rationalization of the quasi contract upon the basis of unjust benefit
was accepted for over a hundred years. But when, in the course of the nineteenth century, the form of
the action was replaced by the dichotomy of tort and contract, Lord Mansfield s views were
challenged. According to Lord SUMNER in Sinclair v. Brougham in 1914 the various actions grouped
under the title of quasi contract were clearly not tortious; if the new antithesis of the common law
were inevitable

Why Is Honor Important In Beowulf
Honor, something powerful enough to sculpt the world s oldest and most powerful empires.
Throughout history great empires such as China, Japan, and the Anglo Saxons have fought and died in
the hunt for honor and fame; bringing life to many great and powerful heroes. Beowulf, one such hero,
who fought many great battle in the name of honor and fame; putting his all into each battle he
encountered. In the epic Beowulf, Beowulf decides to help Hrothgar with the dreaded monster
Grendel and then battling him bare handed. Throughout the epic of Beowulf, Beowulf is mainly
concerned about honor and fame, in his hunt for honor he agrees to help Hrothgar and fight the
monster, Grendel, bare handed; but why? First off, known as a great and noble warrior ... Show more

The hero decides to fight the beast with his hands for the same reason he s done all else; simply for
honor and fame. Fighting the monster with untold strength, Beowulf begins to gain the upper hand: ...
Then he stepped to another/ Still body. Clutched at Beowulf with his claws, / Grasped at a strong
hearted wakeful sleeper/ And was instantly seized himself, claws/ Bent back as Beowulf leaned up on
one arm (lines 320 324). Beowulf s quest to prove his honor reaches its peak here, after showing
respect to the horrid monster who kills men in the least honorable way: in their sleep. For a man of
great strength and so eager to prove his power; to help others in need without first being inquired on
the job. Beowulf is truly a hero worthy of such tales as his, such an honorable man that poets have
spoken his name and his story for hundreds of generations. Helping the once great Hrothgar,
Defeating the monstrous Grendel, and proclaiming his everlasting honor are all reasons Beowulf
earned and preserved his everlasting honor. Honor can corrupt the strongest minded of men, but not in
the case of Beowulf. Beowulf used his greed for honor and fame to better himself and improve the
reputation of his namesake. He proved himself time and time again through countless quests and
deeds, spreading his name across the lands. Due to Beowulf s

Cezanne, The Large Bathers

Picasso, Les Demoiselles d Avignon, 1907, oil on canvas
Cezanne, The Large Bathers, 1906, Oil on canvas
Cezanne started by reaching toward Classicism by using architectural forms, the lines and opening up
the central space bring our eye to the center. Khan, 2015 This makes us focus on the overall picture.
While Michelangelo focused on the form and each aspect, Cezanne focused on a the still and captured
the female form in a consistent manner. Using warm and cool colors for the bodies, one can feel as
though he is looking at the past and not nudes but on the form of color and texture.
Colors
While Cezanne s painting is cold, with hues of muted blues, greens and browns, Matisse and Picasso
use earth tones and exaggerated oranges depicting life and happiness. Color evokes emotion and
feelings. When one looks at the Cezanne painting it is almost cold, as though you are looking into the
past but not required to feel anything other than the scene. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could almost imagine him thinking that while the form is beautiful and invokes feelings many times
a person overlooks the personality and true image of the person.
Going even further away from Picasso, Matisse evokes an almost sinful approach to presenting the
form. The colors of the painting stimulate and make the eye focus on every part including the more
seedy parts.
Each person or persons is surrounded by varying vibrant colors in essence creating mini paintings of
scenes you can get lost into. He very much leaves it to the imagination to determine to what extent

Large Scale Centralized Governments During The Sixth...
Large scale centralized governments in Europe that were thriving during the ninth century found
themselves deteriorating in the tenth and even eleventh century. Empires no longer had a tight grip on
those who inhabited the land. Notably, each sector and individual empire of Europe experienced this
loss of control differently. Many of the empires in western Europe, like the Carolingian empire,
experienced fragmentation and a lack of unification as locals of influential families began to take rule.
With these local rulers, the borders of each empire vanished or became a blur. To illustrate, regions as
small as a few square miles were under the control of various lords who in their right, acted as
independent rulers (SH p.128). Even to the east, the Byzantines experienced a lack of control as the
wealthy Dalasseni family could defy the emperor and also form rebellions against him (SH. 117).
Adding to this fragmentation, Europe experienced detrimental invasions from the Vikings, Muslims,
and the Magyars (Hungarians). Due to this division, Europe as a whole became multi ethnic and
multilingual. Because of this overall disintegration of peoples, existing rulers became heavily
dependent upon vassals; individuals who voluntarily made a public bond with a commanding lord.
Lords at the time did not have an abundance of people to whom they could trust and carry out their
dealings. The feudal system of lords and vassals as revealed in Love and Complaints in Angouleme,
which emphasized

the major deliverables of the Manchester United Soccer Club tournament project. The major

Herbalife Case
Herbalife is currently oversold but I predict, is poised for an increase in the upcoming quarters. Much
of this information is speculation until we can perform a basic comparative financial analysis of
Herbalife and try to conclude based on the current stock price and financials whether the stock is
overvalued, fairly valued, or undervalued. I believe that Herbalife is undervalued and that the stock is
worth much more than its current value. Herbalife continues to make strides and the market had
observed that it has experienced significant percentage changes in its revenue, EBITDA and earnings
over the past five years.
Investors across the board are not huge fans of the MLM business model. According to Ackman s

Harriet Tubman Abolishment
If to take a World History book, it may be clearly seen that the World History has a great number of
sad and happy moments, bright and dull pages, cruel and honorable personalities, as well as
magnificent and tragic periods. One of such tragic periods in the US History is the slave owning
system that lasted two and a half centuries. According to the Bible, a man is born free and should live
in the free world (Wellman, 2016). Nevertheless, it does not always go this way. Thus, an abolishment
movement has been appeared due to the fight for freedom against slavery. This movement had its own

The Simple Gift
Understanding nourishes belonging... a lack of understanding prevents it.

Belonging is primarily about acceptance and developing a connection and identity. Belonging implies
an understanding of the needs of the individual and the group and negotiating a way towards
acceptance of those needs. Conversely, exclusion emerges when the individual and the group fail to

identity at first was seen as a loner, he was isolated and a rebel. His mother was absent and his
relationship with his father was intimidating. The lack of connection to family extends to Old Bill,
whose daughter and wife died, and to Freya and Danny, who do not have the guidance of responsible
adults. Herrick symbolises his disconnection and loneliness in I didn t go inside for hours./I looked
through the back window/watching him/reading the paper/in front of the television/as if nothing

juxtaposing Billy eating like a hobo in the first person narration in And wait for the family of five to

Beowulf Analytical Essay
There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always

examine the only form of historical evidence available texts. One particular great work from this time
period is often underrated and overshadowed in modern society by many other ancient works such as
Iliad or Oedipus Rex. The epic poem, Beowulf, was sung by multiple unknown Anglo Saxon poets
four centuries before the Norman Conquest. The theme of good versus evil was constantly reappearing

Grendel s invasion of Herot symbolizes the destruction of peace and safety, and the imperfections
within the society. The twelve years Grendel had haunted Herot, Herot stood empty, and stayed
deserted for years (145 146) were also the twelve years Hrothgar and his kingdom suffered.
Nevertheless, when Beowulf finally eliminated Grendel, readers see a different side of Herot, Golden
tapestries were lined along the walls, for a host of visitors to see and take pleasure in (995 996), the
glory and grandeur was restored, all with the slaying of Grendel an outcast of society. The rigid and
confined society of the Danes also shaped the way its people think and act, but also influenced greatly
on the writings. Given the fact that metaphors and kennings are common in Old English literature; the
representation of evil is also something not to be taken on a literal level. Edgetho had begun a bitter

peace. Grendel takes on a form that is left uncertain; its real meaning hidden behind the metaphorical
mask of a monster, is the never ending battles between tribal armies (namely, the Danes, Geats,
Frisians, and the Swedes) that had disturbed the tranquility people had longed for. It is almost a barrier
of peacekeeping, hider of hope. Hence, it is represented by Grendel, a great evil hated by many, whom

Descriptive Writing Of A Lake Research Paper
The sky rumbles with thunder as the charcoal clouds roll over the excessively dark rough watered
lake. The clouds are so thick and dark that only a few flickers of light, from the moon, shine through.
The depth of the lake appears to have no end, as if anything would get lost if caught in its rough
currents. Thick and high grass cover the water s edge. The air becomes thick and icy, making it hard
for anyone to breathe. It is the kind of icy feeling that fills the whole entire body, consuming every
inch of life within. The kind that send chills down spines. There is the sound of pinging in the
distance. In a nearby, unlit parking lot sat an old, rusted black car. Its edges were worn away, its paint

Dental Hygiene Reflection
In elementary school, one of my favorite days in grade school would be when my mom came in for
her oral hygiene lessons. Even though my mom could have easily demonstrated proper techniques on
how to brush and floss teeth with a dental model for my classes, she knew how excited I would always
get when she called on me to personally demonstrate. I would brush in confidence those tooth
surfaces, at a 45 degree angle and with small circular strokes. Promptly in the lesson, I would put the
toothbrush vertically for those inside surfaces of my front teeth. My mom would end the brushing
technique with a friendly reminder to brush for a full two minutes, twice a day. She also told the kids
to think of triangles and to floss along the mesial and distal surfaces of their teeth, rather than straight
down and cutting their gums. With every upcoming yearly demonstration, I honed that routine of
mine, ensuring to my classmates the best way to keep the plague out. Even to this day, I have still got
my middle school sketchbook in my desk drawer, where I had illustrated the cover as, Dr. Pham, DDS

known to be as, The Office. In the day to day, I strove to follow my dad s office procedures. Imagine,

Knowledge And Epistemology And The Philosophy Of Knowledge
According to the oxford dictionary belief can be defined as an acceptance that something exists or is
true, especially one without proof . Beliefs are the best factor that influence in the decision making
process. In other words, the beliefs students hold have a great effect on the perceptions and the
judgments they make about the world. In education and especially in social sciences beliefs are
studied through epistemology. Epistemology is the philosophy of knowledge and how it is
acquired(Bryman, 2016). Beliefs are mostly developed through social interaction and direct messages
that we receive from our surrounding. This belief may develops in a long period of time or may be it
takes only a minute if the message received or social interaction is so powerful(Tillema, 1998). Beliefs

Positivism is based on the principle that knowledge is acquired when tested through senses and is
based on facts. As it is more scientific phenomena then it is based on the objectivity or fixity of
knowledge(Bryman, 2016). Whereas, constructivism states that knowledge is constructed through
social agents and it is in the constant state of revision. Hence it promotes variability of
knowledge(Bryman, 2016).
As Pakistani society is based on the concept of fundamentalism, which promotes the fixity of
knowledge, hence the students who are produced through this education system of Pakistan have more
or less positivist beliefs which concerned to the fixity of knowledge(Skov, 2007). So beliefs shape
behavior which can be seen in the actions of the students. To understand the beliefs of Student
teachers we just look at the ways they respond to the fixity of knowledge. So if I see the bigger
picture, the understanding of the beliefs of teachers are essential to bring change in teacher education
programs(Tillema, 1998).

The Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorder (...
Gender dysphoria is a complex struggle between a person s physical gender and who he or she
identifies, and this could be an individual physically born as a male that identifies as being female and
vice versa. Biological sex is determined at birth based upon the appearance of the infant, but gender
identity is how the person feels or how they identify themselves, which is where the dysphoria comes
in. It is from highly complex genetic, neurodevelopmental, and psychological factors (Mandal, 2012),
and is not the same as homosexuality or gender nonconformity. Symptoms and signs of gender
dysphoria may vary depending upon age and gender. Gender dysphoria becomes known as a disorder
when it fits certain criteria. Treatment is available when needed. There are speculations on the cause,
but no real answer. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM 5) made changes
to ensure clinical care that is proper and without stigma for individuals with gender dysphoria. The
DSM 5 does provide an overarching diagnosis, but with specific criteria for children and for
adolescents and adults (DSM, 2013). A marked discrepancy between the individual s communicated
gender and his or her natal gender must be ongoing at least six months (Parekh, 2016). Children and
adults must verbalize or show a desire to be the other gender under the guidelines of DSM 5. Children

Reggae Is Not Only A Type Of Music
For indigenous communities throughout the world, reggae is not only a type of music, but a culture.
One of the most worldwide forms of popular culture, reggae is able to be found in many communities,
such as Native American, Aboriginal Australian, Hawaiian and Pacific. Reggae has a very well known
and well defined associated culture. It must be kept in mind the appeal of the Rastafarian lifestyle
associated with the reggae genre. For many youth in indigenous communities, this lifestyle may be
seen as more attractive than the music itself, hence why the popularity of the genre in countries where
youth are displaced, disenfranchised or displeased with social, political and economic conditions.
However, the meanings in the lyrics attached to reggae music are reflective of these conditions. As a
music and a culture, reggae is undoubtedly rebellious. Both the sound of reggae and the message
within it convey a sense of struggle which many indigenous communities identify with. It is able to be
used by indigenous communities as a platform to discuss shared experiences of colonial imperialism
and supremacy, and examples of reggae differ depending on what community and country it was
produced in. These groups have shared experiences of colonialism and subjugation by hegemonic
(often white) powers. Reggae is popular in indigenous communities for both its sound and message. It
is adopted and transformed by these communities to affirm particular indigenous identities whilst

Together, the pair climbed a tall mountain, faced a snake, and were chased by a hawk. They ran back

In the ever changing and uncertain world we live in, peace of mind comes at a premium price. The

radical shift in the way Americans interact with money. In hopes of reforming and strengthening the
American economy, we propose to replace the primary currency of the United States from coins and

With wasteful consumer spending decreased, Americans will be able to focus their hard earned dollars
on more important items, such as flat panel LCD s and energy efficient hybrids. Thus Americans
would become less consumer culture. Also, replacing the American currency with cinder blocks would
help curb muggings and other sorts of street violence. Many times, criminals target individuals who
appear to be carrying cash, among other things. However, since cash will become obsolete, individuals
will not be able to carry money with them, thus eliminating a portion of street crime. Another
important aspect of cinder blocks is the ease of use and the convenient nature of them, notes Jim

History Of Rocklin Police Department
History of Rocklin Police Department
Thirty miles east of California s State Capitol lies a unique town called Rocklin. This small town
which was originally known as Secret Ravine originated in 1860, with a population of 440 and is
recognized throughout history for its rock quarries and railroads. According to Roy Ruhkala (1974)
Rocklin built its first city jail in the middle of the 1880 s, and was crafted of granite, with a small steel
window and door. Each night a watchman patrolled the streets and approximately every evening at
8:00pm a curfew bell would ring, warning all vagrants to leave town and notify children to get home.
Gary Day (2003 2016) claims the jail was intended to house criminals, but in the early 20th century, it
became a place for hobos to escape the long cold nights; however, there was one stipulation, they had
to be locked up for the night for fear they would steal the bedding. In 1946 a young boy named Ernest
Willard became Rocklin s first chief of police, his father George was the town marshal. Every
morning on his way to school, Ernest would go by the Jailhouse to let the hobos out. This haven for
hobos was an act of compassion and community service that will forever be remembered. Earnest
Willard passed away in 1987 at the age of 90, but in 1983 he served as an honorary marshal in the
Rocklin Jubilee parade, at the time he still possessed a key to the original jail house.

Hydraulic Civilizations and the Philanthropic Industrialists
1. Historical Origins
For many planners and historians the origin of ancient cities has been a source of fascination and the
cause for much research and debate. One theory developed by the German American historian Karl
Wittfogel was that of hydraulic civilizations (Minnery 2010a). Hydraulic civilizations were described
as those whose agricultural system was reliant upon significant government directed water systems for
irrigation and flood management (Encyclopædia Britannica 2010). Wittfogel listed that Egypt, India,
Mesopotamia, Northern China and pre Columbian Mexico and Peru were examples of hydraulic
civilizations (Minnery 2010a). This paper will focus on the theories of the Wittfogel s hydraulic

One other dissimilarity is that of Brisbane s environment. It isn t arid or semi arid in fact it was once
lined with sand covered beaches and the water was clear and blue (Our Indooroopilly 2002). Therefore
it is difficult to prove that Brisbane has similar qualities to that of a hydraulic civilization and
Wittfogel s theories can be left in the past with the Old World . 3. The Philanthropic Industrialist
The United Kingdom in the late eighteenth and nineteenth century was home to the bustling and
demanding Industrial Revolution. Factories emerged all over the country as technology advanced into
an era of mass production. In many of these factories the conditions were unclean, unsafe and
ultimately appalling. Some factory owners however, sought out to improve the quality of life for their
workers. These few are recognised as the Philanthropic Industrialists . They implemented what has
become known as the company town which saw the social and economic qualities of the township
under the control of the industrialist (Pollard 1964). This paper will discuss one UK example in the
town of New Lanark, in particular the philanthropy of Robert Owen and will examine whether this
town and Owen s theories have been influential up until the present day.
New Lanark in Scotland was initially founded by David Dale in 1785 (The Open University 2009).

disability, they also have to deal with great stress regarding the autistic child. The presence of a child
with a disability may involve some difficult adjustments for the rest of the family.
Different effects are implied to the whole family, changes in family roles are highly affected and
because of this they have to reorganize the family s functioning and activities. Autism affects the

Station Four Lab Report
Station one: Station one shows that when a small piece of magnesium metal is placed over the flame
of the Bunsen burner, the magnesium metal ignites, giving off a bright, white light. Once the flame has
extinguished itself due to the lack of fuel, the magnesium metal turned from a metallic strip to a
crumbled white powder. It can be decided that station one is a combination (redox) reaction, as a new
product is synthesised by the combination of two reactants. The reactants, magnesium and oxygen gas
in the air bonded together to form the product of magnesium oxide. Station two: Station two shows
that when a beaker full of cold water is placed over a hot candle flame, many observations take place
signifying a chemical reaction, as well as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, when the 2mL of sulphuric acid was added to the pink solution, the solution
immediately returned clear in colour, therefore highlighting that the solution was acidic. Station seven
can be clearly identified as a neutralisation (acid, base) reaction, as an acid and base has reacted
together to form salt and water. The reactants, sodium hydroxide and sulphuric acid reacted together to
produce sodium sulphate and

The Relationship Between Barber And The Executioner
This quotation indicates the theme of they story and also develops the character of the barber along
with the relationship of the barber and the executioner through the barbers narrative thoughts. The
quotation establishes that the barber is very prideful which influences the decision he makes you came
to me for a shave. I will perform my work honourably.... (Tellez 3). This is important because it shows
he is proud of is work and knows that killing the executioner will ruin being an honourable barber, it
develops his character as a man with a big ego, and smart with his decisions. As mentioned it also
establishes the relationship between the executioner and barber, as it shows the barber is hateful
towards the executioner, as

Outline and Assess Marxist Explanations of Crime
Outline and assess Marxist explanations of crime
Marxist and neo Marxist approaches and explanations of crime are arguably some of the most
controversial, for the reason that they state that it is the ruling class that is responsible for
criminalising the working classes, which goes directly against what official statistics and
Functionalists believe. However, Marxism and Functionalism do share a similarity in that both believe
structures and institutions of society play a very important role in determining how people behave,
criminally or otherwise.
Marxist sociologists argue that in order to understand crime and deviance, one needs to realise that it
is the nature of exploitative economic systems that capitalist societies have in ... Show more content

Functionalists argue that it represents everyone s interest whilst feminists argue it represents men s
interests.
The Neo Marxist new criminology developed in the early 1970 s is also key to understanding how
Marxists explain crime. Taylor, Walton and Young s work maintained that crime was best understood
in the context of capitalism and the inequalities it creates. One way that the neo Marxists slightly
differ with the traditional Marxist theories is that it says there is more freedom of choice that people
have when choosing to commit crime and people are not just puppets of the economy. Here it could be
said that the Neo Marxists are taking interactionist theories on board and are moving away from the
structuralist theories of traditional Marxism and Functionalism. With their book The New
Criminology Taylor et al. attempted to come up with a fully social theory of deviance and looked into
the importance of the labelling of certain groups within society as being criminal, in their case it was
black working class men being labelled as criminal and dangerous by the law and order systems as
well as the media. The book analyses the crisis faced by British capitalism during the recession of the
1970 s and the resulting threat to the authority of the state. It argues that the state responded to this
crisis by mounting a law and order campaign which lead to a moral panic over mugging. As a result,
black youth became increasingly

Majority Rules, Minority Rights By Elizabeth Bisbeth Silber
It is extremely important to protect the rights of the minority people in order to be able to live in a
democracy. One of the basis that a democracy follows by is the ability to protect the rights of the
minorities, so that everyone s voice can be heard and respected.
In an article called Majority Rules, Minority Rights by Elizabeth Bisbeth Silber, Bisbeth Silber talks
about how in the United States, the majority rules, but the minority has the right to rights, and explains
how the U.S. has to follow the rights given to its citizens. Bisbeth Silver writes, A sizable number of
Americans might loathe the idea of gay marriage. It might even be an affront to everything they hold
sacred... Marriage has been defined by the Supreme Court as a fundamental right (Bisbeth Silver, par.
6). In this statement, Bisbeth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marriage is a fundamental right that everyone has, and it is protected by our government, who gives
minority groups rights in order to protect themselves against complete control.
In the article called Majority Rule/Minority Rights: Essential Principles , the author writes about the
majority rule, and then continues to talk about how the minorities need to be protected and be heard by
the democratic nation, since that is the one of the founding principles of democracy. The articles says,
Democracy therefore requires minority rights equally as it does majority rule. Indeed, as democracy is
understood today, the minority s rights must be protected no matter how alienated a minority is from
the majority society; otherwise, the majority s rights lose

The Impact Of Neuropsychology On The Christian Faith
The Christian faith is pluralistic, meaning, There [are] as many ways to love God as there [are]
Christian souls (Salzman, 2000, p.77). This reaches greater complexity when considering the impact
of neuropsychology on the Christian faith. People experience God in a plethora of ways, but what
about seemingly brain induced experiences? Salzman (2000) describes the journey of Sister John, a
nun at the Carmelite convent in Los Angeles. She experiences headaches that develop into deep
spiritual episodes, which her doctor later informs her, are the symptoms of her recurring seizures.
Sister John has temporal lobe epilepsy and her doctor explains that it, tend[s] to be more psychological
(Salzman, 2000, p.68). Sister John s spiritual episodes were presumably caused by her medical
condition. So, were all of her spiritual encounters with God a lie? Was her faith a fabrication? The
implication of these questions can be quite troubling for the Christian faith. Is God simply a
manifestation created within our minds? Objects exist because they exist within the realm of our
senses. If we cannot trust our senses, then what truly exists outside of ourselves? Sister John describes
a memory of her being drawn into service at the convent. She attended an early morning mass on
Christmas Day when something odd happened. If one looks closely, she describes experiences of
depersonalization, Instead of feeling trapped in a theater showing a bad movie, she saw herself as the
projector

Matson s Argument Against Segregation
Moreover, if Maston is consistent, he must argue that restrooms must be desegregated. Each sex gets
to choose which restroom to use. Restrooms are no longer segregated by sex. Thus, having different
restrooms for men and women must be outlawed just as they were for different races. Such
segregation of restrooms must result from sexual prejudice, sexism, and the superiority inferiority
complex. As women prefer segregated restrooms more so than do men, women must be prejudice
toward men and consider themselves superior to men. At least segregated restrooms solves the
problem of which restroom transgender people and transvestites should use. Matson claims,
Segregation is always discriminatory; it has meant and does mean inferior service to the segregated (p.
54). Thus, he admits that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He claims this argument implies the inferiority of the Negro (pp. 64 65). If true, when a Negro
opposes interracial marriage, he does so because he believes Blacks are inferior to Whites. When
people who oppose desegregation for this reason, they are aware that when two or more races finally
mix, they soon start mating each other and breeding themselves out of existence thus, destroy the
races that God created. (Ezra Chapter 9 and 10 illustrate this outcome. For that reason, God
commended the Jews to send their alien wives away along with the children born in their illicit
marriages.) Other than love and justice, Matson fails to explain why Christians should support a
situation that leads to the destruction of God s creation. Where are the love and justice in such a
wanton willful destruction? The desire to oppose situations that result in destroying the races, species,
of humans that God created rests on love and justice and not the inferiority or superiority of any race.
Moreover, why would Matson or anyone else want to support breeding the Negro into

At Land Maya Deren
At Land (1944) is an experimental fifteen minute silent film written, directed and starring Maya
Deren. Composer John Cage and poet film critic Parker Tyler were also involved in making the film.
It deconstructs narrative conventions and experiments with film techniques. It has a dream like
narrative in which a woman played by Deren, is washed up on a beach, like a fish and goes on an
unfamiliar passage encountering other people and other versions of herself. Throughout the film there
s lots of going through, climbing up, down, through. Deren is clearly searching for something; her
expressions are often confused and hopeless. This film is open to multiple readings and interpretations
but I believe the film depicts the tensions between self and society. Throughout the film Deren
functions as an outsider, an unseen intruder. I am isolating three significant frames ... Show more

Examples Of Implicature Analysis
Implicature Analysis Before telling the theory, Ryan asks what everybody wants in life. Hari answers
something about his girlfriend and Surdy wants to know who Hari s girlfriend is. Actually the question
is intended for Hari but Ryan takes the charge and says it is not his business which appears to be
violation of maxim of relation. He should have told Surdy Hari s girlfriend s name but he and Hari do
not want everybody to know it. In order to hide the information from others, Ryan violates maxim of
relation. It also violates tact maxim as Ryan impolitely suggests Surdy that you don t have anything to
do with that. To be polite, his reply should have been we do not want you to know Hari s girlfriend s
name. On the contrary, Ryan suggests Surdy not to ask Hari s girlfriend s name. But as stated earlier
this conversation has taken place between friends so; friends do say something impolitely as it is an
informal conversation. Close friends do not mind if anyone of them uses impolite language with them.
Concluding Remarks Impolite conversation is a very common thing between friends, especially when
they are away from home and having a party. They violate maxims every time to convey something
else to their friends. People, in general, violate maxims of co operative principle and politeness
principle with a motive. Here Ryan s motive is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Paul Laurence Dunbar s Sympathy Essay
Paul Laurence Dunbar was an African American writer who lived during the late 1800s. This
tumultuous time period was filled with racism that limited the freedom and the voice of African
Americans everywhere. This racism existed not only in the day to day lives of African Americans, but
also in the sphere of literature and, thus, severely impacted Dunbar s life. Sympathy , published in
1899, is a poem that addresses the difference in treatment of white Americans and African Americans
as well as African Americans desire for freedom from both a personal standpoint as a writer and also
as a public figure speaking on behalf of the African American community.
Sympathy is a reflection of Dunbar s own struggle as an African American poet during the late 19th
century. During this time, African Americans were judged as socially and economically inferior and
lacking the tools of upward class mobility: proper English speech, literacy, and a Western education
(Roman 33). This view of African Americans was translated into the literary field by the leading elite
literary figure William Dean Howells, who believed that dialect poetry was the only form of authentic
and proper African America speech (Roman 33). Howells beliefs led to editors choosing to only
publish dialect poetry which forced Dunbar to discontinue writing in his preferred literary style of
Standard English. In this way, the editors became the cage that held the bird. Dunbar contrasts the idea
of the caged bird

  • 2. Analysis Of The Book War By Sebastian Junger There is a very large majority of material written and taken down about the Iraq/Afghan war, and our libraries hold majority of these works of literature. This is a book review of the book War which is authored by Sebastian Junger and published by Hatchett Book Group in May of 2010. Sebastian Junger was an embedded reporter with the 2nd Platoon, Battle Company of the 173rd Airborne Brigade for Vanity Fair magazine, and was entirely dependent on the U.S. military for food, shelter, security, and transportation.1 This book is the result of five trips taken to Korengal Valley in eastern Afghanistan that were taken between June 2007 and June 2008. Junger states that he was never asked directly or indirectly to alter his reporting in any way or to show the contents of his camera. Junger is an American citizen and has recollections of the terrorist s attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. With this in mind, it could be cause for some bias reporting that may be presented and talked about through this book review. This memoir was written for the main reason of Junger being interested in Americans in Afghanistan. He was interested in what it was like to serve in a platoon of combat infantry in the U.S. Army.2 With this memoir in mind, Junger wanted to reach the American citizens as his audience to show just what mindset the American soldiers were placed in during their time in Afghanistan. Junger states that the moral basis of the war didn t seem to interest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. United States Economy According to the U.S. Labor Statistics 2011 report, when President Obama took office, the economy was shedding nearly 800,000 jobs each month and millions of families were unable to make ends meet. African Americans were hit especially hard by the recession struggling with significant economic losses, including near record high levels of unemployment and low average earnings (U.S. Labor Statistics 2011). From day one the President has made turning the economy around a top priority, and the policies enacted through the Recovery Act of 2009 have had a significant impact on the country s economic well being. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Recovery Act and later expansions and extensions kept 1.3 million African Americans above the poverty line last year alone (Sherman 2009). And this year, the continued expansion of just two tax credits the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child tax Credit has benefited an estimated 2.2 million African American families and almost half of all African American children. The targeted tax relief enacted by President Obama through both the Recovery Act and the December tax Deal has provided relief to nearly every American, helping them bear the brunt of the recession and supporting them as the economy has recovered (The President Agenda and the African American Community, November 2011 pg. 4). Florida is one big sand peninsula located below the 40th longitudinal North American line. British Airways and Iberia hope their new company International Airlines Group, International Airlines Group, will position the pair for further consolidation in the global airline sector as it emerges from a prolonged industry downturn and hope to compete with multinational rivals Air France KLM and Lufthansa. From a personal analysis it seems that the merger is likely to be more strategic for both companies as Iberia is more dominant in South American destinations and British Airways flies to only three South American destinations. The key benefit of the merger to BA would be the access to South America. Similarly, Iberia will gain from BA s more extensive North American operations, with the two carriers able to share information on fares, schedules and routes. Quasi Contracts INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE OF QUASI CONTRACTS: Under the general heading of the Quasi contract there has been grouped a number of cases which have little or no affinity with contract. A simple illustration is afforded by the action to recover money paid by mistake. If the plaintiff on an erroneous interpretation of the facts, pays to the defendant a sum of money which he does not really owe, law, no less than justice, will require he defendant to restore it. But his obligation is manifestly not based upon the consent, even in the extended meaning borne by the word in the English law, and its description as a quasi contractual liability serves only to emphasize its remoteness from any genuine conception of contract. This shows that there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But Lord MANSFIELD preferred the latter theory that the bases for quasi contracts are for the purpose of prevention of unjust enrichment. THEORY OF IMPLIED IN FACT CONTRACT: The gist of this kind of action is that the defendant, upon the circumstances of the case, is obliged by the ties of natural justice and equity to refund the money. But apart from this it should be observed that did not use the word equity to denote the jurisdiction of chancery but the synonym for jus naturale . Nor, while he based the obligations of quasi contract upon the duty of restoring benefits unjustly obtained, did he assert that in every such case an action would lie. As he declared in Weston v. Downes, I am a great friend to the action for money had and received, and therefore I am not stretching, lest I should endanger it thus the principle of unjust benefit explained the cases falling within the scope of quasi contracts: it did not automatically invoke the remedy. Subject to these qualifications the rationalization of the quasi contract upon the basis of unjust benefit was accepted for over a hundred years. But when, in the course of the nineteenth century, the form of the action was replaced by the dichotomy of tort and contract, Lord Mansfield s views were challenged. According to Lord SUMNER in Sinclair v. Brougham in 1914 the various actions grouped under the title of quasi contract were clearly not tortious; if the new antithesis of the common law were inevitable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Large Scale Centralized Governments During The Sixth... Large scale centralized governments in Europe that were thriving during the ninth century found themselves deteriorating in the tenth and even eleventh century. Empires no longer had a tight grip on those who inhabited the land. Notably, each sector and individual empire of Europe experienced this loss of control differently. Many of the empires in western Europe, like the Carolingian empire, experienced fragmentation and a lack of unification as locals of influential families began to take rule. With these local rulers, the borders of each empire vanished or became a blur. To illustrate, regions as small as a few square miles were under the control of various lords who in their right, acted as independent rulers (SH p.128). Even to the east, the Byzantines experienced a lack of control as the wealthy Dalasseni family could defy the emperor and also form rebellions against him (SH. 117). Adding to this fragmentation, Europe experienced detrimental invasions from the Vikings, Muslims, and the Magyars (Hungarians). Due to this division, Europe as a whole became multi ethnic and multilingual. Because of this overall disintegration of peoples, existing rulers became heavily dependent upon vassals; individuals who voluntarily made a public bond with a commanding lord. Lords at the time did not have an abundance of people to whom they could trust and carry out their dealings. This small town which was originally known as Secret Ravine originated in 1860, with a population of 440 and is recognized throughout history for its rock quarries and railroads. According to Roy Ruhkala (1974) Rocklin built its first city jail in the middle of the 1880 s, and was crafted of granite, with a small steel window and door. Each night a watchman patrolled the streets and approximately every evening at 8:00pm a curfew bell would ring, warning all vagrants to leave town and notify children to get home. Gary Day (2003 2016) claims the jail was intended to house criminals, but in the early 20th century, it became a place for hobos to escape the long cold nights; however, there was one stipulation, they had to be locked up for the night for fear they would steal the bedding. In 1946 a young boy named Ernest Willard became Rocklin s first chief of police, his father George was the town marshal. Every morning on his way to school, Ernest would go by the Jailhouse to let the hobos out. This haven for hobos was an act of compassion and community service that will forever be remembered. Since they are the ones who are primarily responsible for dealing with the needs of the child with a disability, they also have to deal with great stress regarding the autistic child. The presence of a child with a disability may involve some difficult adjustments for the rest of the family. Different effects are implied to the whole family, changes in family roles are highly affected and because of this they have to reorganize the family s functioning and activities. Autism affects the enormously, they are challenged physically, mentally, emotionally and financially as well. Everyday things have to be carefully planned and executed. • 42. Station Four Lab Report Station one: Station one shows that when a small piece of magnesium metal is placed over the flame of the Bunsen burner, the magnesium metal ignites, giving off a bright, white light. Once the flame has extinguished itself due to the lack of fuel, the magnesium metal turned from a metallic strip to a crumbled white powder. It can be decided that station one is a combination (redox) reaction, as a new product is synthesised by the combination of two reactants. The reactants, magnesium and oxygen gas in the air bonded together to form the product of magnesium oxide. Station two: Station two shows that when a beaker full of cold water is placed over a hot candle flame, many observations take place signifying a chemical reaction, as well as a ... • 43. The Relationship Between Barber And The Executioner This quotation indicates the theme of they story and also develops the character of the barber along with the relationship of the barber and the executioner through the barbers narrative thoughts. The quotation establishes that the barber is very prideful which influences the decision he makes you came to me for a shave. I will perform my work honourably.... (Tellez 3). This is important because it shows he is proud of is work and knows that killing the executioner will ruin being an honourable barber, it develops his character as a man with a big ego, and smart with his decisions. • 44. Outline and Assess Marxist Explanations of Crime Outline and assess Marxist explanations of crime Marxist and neo Marxist approaches and explanations of crime are arguably some of the most controversial, for the reason that they state that it is the ruling class that is responsible for criminalising the working classes, which goes directly against what official statistics and Functionalists believe. However, Marxism and Functionalism do share a similarity in that both believe structures and institutions of society play a very important role in determining how people behave, criminally or otherwise. Marxist sociologists argue that in order to understand crime and deviance, one needs to realise that it is the nature of exploitative economic systems that capitalist societies have in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Functionalists argue that it represents everyone s interest whilst feminists argue it represents men s interests. The Neo Marxist new criminology developed in the early 1970 s is also key to understanding how Marxists explain crime. Taylor, Walton and Young s work maintained that crime was best understood in the context of capitalism and the inequalities it creates. One way that the neo Marxists slightly differ with the traditional Marxist theories is that it says there is more freedom of choice that people have when choosing to commit crime and people are not just puppets of the economy. Here it could be said that the Neo Marxists are taking interactionist theories on board and are moving away from the structuralist theories of traditional Marxism and Functionalism. With their book The New Criminology Taylor et al. attempted to come up with a fully social theory of deviance and looked into the importance of the labelling of certain groups within society as being criminal, in their case it was black working class men being labelled as criminal and dangerous by the law and order systems as well as the media. The book analyses the crisis faced by British capitalism during the recession of the 1970 s and the resulting threat to the authority of the state. It argues that the state responded to this crisis by mounting a law and order campaign which lead to a moral panic over mugging. As a result, black youth became increasingly ... • 46. The Impact Of Neuropsychology On The Christian Faith The Christian faith is pluralistic, meaning, There [are] as many ways to love God as there [are] Christian souls (Salzman, 2000, p.77). This reaches greater complexity when considering the impact of neuropsychology on the Christian faith. People experience God in a plethora of ways, but what about seemingly brain induced experiences? Salzman (2000) describes the journey of Sister John, a nun at the Carmelite convent in Los Angeles. She experiences headaches that develop into deep spiritual episodes, which her doctor later informs her, are the symptoms of her recurring seizures. Sister John has temporal lobe epilepsy and her doctor explains that it, tend[s] to be more psychological (Salzman, 2000, p.68). Sister John s spiritual episodes were presumably caused by her medical condition. So, were all of her spiritual encounters with God a lie? Was her faith a fabrication? The implication of these questions can be quite troubling for the Christian faith. Is God simply a manifestation created within our minds? Objects exist because they exist within the realm of our senses. If we cannot trust our senses, then what truly exists outside of ourselves? Sister John describes a memory of her being drawn into service at the convent. She attended an early morning mass on Christmas Day when something odd happened. If one looks closely, she describes experiences of depersonalization, Instead of feeling trapped in a theater showing a bad movie, she saw herself as the projector ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Matson s Argument Against Segregation Moreover, if Maston is consistent, he must argue that restrooms must be desegregated. Each sex gets to choose which restroom to use. Restrooms are no longer segregated by sex. Thus, having different restrooms for men and women must be outlawed just as they were for different races. Such segregation of restrooms must result from sexual prejudice, sexism, and the superiority inferiority complex. As women prefer segregated restrooms more so than do men, women must be prejudice toward men and consider themselves superior to men. At least segregated restrooms solves the problem of which restroom transgender people and transvestites should use. Matson claims, Segregation is always discriminatory; it has meant and does mean inferior service to the segregated (p. 54). Thus, he admits that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He claims this argument implies the inferiority of the Negro (pp. 64 65). If true, when a Negro opposes interracial marriage, he does so because he believes Blacks are inferior to Whites. When people who oppose desegregation for this reason, they are aware that when two or more races finally mix, they soon start mating each other and breeding themselves out of existence thus, destroy the races that God created. (Ezra Chapter 9 and 10 illustrate this outcome. For that reason, God commended the Jews to send their alien wives away along with the children born in their illicit marriages.) Other than love and justice, Matson fails to explain why Christians should support a situation that leads to the destruction of God s creation. Where are the love and justice in such a wanton willful destruction? The desire to oppose situations that result in destroying the races, species, of humans that God created rests on love and justice and not the inferiority or superiority of any race. Moreover, why would Matson or anyone else want to support breeding the Negro into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. At Land Maya Deren At Land (1944) is an experimental fifteen minute silent film written, directed and starring Maya Deren. Composer John Cage and poet film critic Parker Tyler were also involved in making the film. It deconstructs narrative conventions and experiments with film techniques. It has a dream like narrative in which a woman played by Deren, is washed up on a beach, like a fish and goes on an unfamiliar passage encountering other people and other versions of herself. Throughout the film there s lots of going through, climbing up, down, through. Deren is clearly searching for something; her expressions are often confused and hopeless. This film is open to multiple readings and interpretations but I believe the film depicts the tensions between self and society. Throughout the film Deren functions as an outsider, an unseen intruder. I am isolating three significant frames ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hari answers something about his girlfriend and Surdy wants to know who Hari s girlfriend is. Actually the question is intended for Hari but Ryan takes the charge and says it is not his business which appears to be violation of maxim of relation. He should have told Surdy Hari s girlfriend s name but he and Hari do not want everybody to know it. In order to hide the information from others, Ryan violates maxim of relation. It also violates tact maxim as Ryan impolitely suggests Surdy that you don t have anything to do with that. To be polite, his reply should have been we do not want you to know Hari s girlfriend s name. On the contrary, Ryan suggests Surdy not to ask Hari s girlfriend s name. But as stated earlier this conversation has taken place between friends so; friends do say something impolitely as it is an informal conversation. Close friends do not mind if anyone of them uses impolite language with them. Concluding Remarks Impolite conversation is a very common thing between friends, especially when they are away from home and having a party. • 50. Analysis Of Paul Laurence Dunbar s Sympathy Essay Paul Laurence Dunbar was an African American writer who lived during the late 1800s. This tumultuous time period was filled with racism that limited the freedom and the voice of African Americans everywhere. This racism existed not only in the day to day lives of African Americans, but also in the sphere of literature and, thus, severely impacted Dunbar s life. Sympathy , published in 1899, is a poem that addresses the difference in treatment of white Americans and African Americans as well as African Americans desire for freedom from both a personal standpoint as a writer and also as a public figure speaking on behalf of the African American community. Sympathy is a reflection of Dunbar s own struggle as an African American poet during the late 19th century. During this time, African Americans were judged as socially and economically inferior and lacking the tools of upward class mobility: proper English speech, literacy, and a Western education (Roman 33). This view of African Americans was translated into the literary field by the leading elite literary figure William Dean Howells, who believed that dialect poetry was the only form of authentic and proper African America speech (Roman 33). Howells beliefs led to editors choosing to only publish dialect poetry which forced Dunbar to discontinue writing in his preferred literary style of Standard English. In this way, the editors became the cage that held the bird. Dunbar contrasts the idea of the caged bird ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
