Southern Brazil Culture
Brazil is larger and better than the film rundown staring the Rock and Sean William Scott in 2003
portrays. They showed part of the land, but the land is so large that it covers the majority of South
America. Argentina is one of the many places to border Brazil as well as the Atlantic Ocean. Well, to
go with all of this land that they have population and it is through the roof. Southern Brazil is one of
the most populated areas it is just behind Tokyo. It is more populated than most of Latin America and
accounts for most of the Latina community. This is interesting considering that approximately 8000
years ago people were spotted here. Living like nomads, Asians are among the first traceable humans.
They claimed to have been there in search ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the influence of Portugal they brought over rich sweet egg bread that they serve with every meal.
Along with a couple of sea food dishes that have a coconut fruity taste with vegetables. That is all in
the North the South similar to America is Barbeque. They took the entire animal after marinating and
cooked it on a long skewer over an open fire. They do not even move it from the skewer when it
comes to serving it. It is simply removed using a butchers knife and is cut onto the plate. However,
this is just part of the cuisine of the southern areas. The national dish was rumored to have been
inspired by African slaves. Who were brought over to Brazil by Spain. This led to Africa having a
large influence on their cuisine including the national dish. Better known as a stew, and served with
rice, greens and orange slices. Now, the meat that they used for the stew is those of the cheaper kinds.
Seems they were slaves, they only got to really eat the masters leftovers and scraps. The often
included pigs feet, which is the authentic way. I keep referring to it as a dish, but it more like a
miniature feast considering everything that is served with it and yet alone the ingredients in the stew.
But, there is something that they consume almost every single meal and that is Manioc. Manioc is
actually a vegetable that they utilize as their flour. When the slaves came over so did the use of:

Opportunities and Threats facing the U.S Airline Industry
The health of the overall U.S airline industry is still tenuous in spite of the passenger traffic volumes
returning to pre 9/11 levels. A survey estimated that from 2001 through 2003, the US airline industry
reported to have lost $23.2 billion dollars, compounded by an additional $1.6 billion in the first
quarter of 2004. This $24.8 billion shortfall exceeds the total profits earned over the entire six year
period 1995 2000
Drastic changes in the Economic, Political/legal and technological segment of airline s external
environment contributed to some of the major looses seen by the industry. The key factors that heavily
contributed to the loses include

A recent survey of the airline economic health suggested that even though the industry hoped to return
to some degree of stability, if not profitability, yet new costs beyond the airlines control wiped out
recent efforts to cut costs and achieve new efficiencies. Record high oil prices and nation s on going
war on terrorism have presented new barriers to improving the industry s financial health.
Another cost factor that is heavily contributing to the overall cost is the Aviation Security
Infrastructure fee (ASIF). This fee is enforced after Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation
Security Act (ATSA) which necessitated additional security at the airports. This fee is expected to rise
to $750million in 2005 from $315 million in 2000. This fee is in additional to the additional federal
security mandates imposed since 9/11. The industry argues that impact of federal security mandate and
foregone revenue totals $2.8 billion per year.
The statute that directs FAA to extend war risk insurance to U.S airlines and air cargo carriers is set to
expire on August 31st of this year. Since there is no commercial market for this type of insurance, the
industry could obtain coverage for only limited utility that could potentially cost the airline industry
several hundred millions of dollars annually in

Ethnography of Tea
Background
China
The origins of tea are rooted in China (Food Timeline). According to legend, the beneficial properties
of tea were first discovered by the Emperor Shen Nung in the year 2737 B.C. He drank only boiled
water for hygienic purposes, and one day while he drank a breeze rustled the branches of a tree and a
few leaves fell into his cup. Creating the first cup of tea. It is challenging to know whether or not the
emperor was real or just a part of the spiritual and cultural development of ancient China. China was
not unified as an empire until the third century, so it is unlikely emperors existed back then. One thing
that is known is that tea was popular in China thousands of years ago. The first written reference of tea
is in the third century B.C. A famous surgeon recommended the beverage to patients to increase
concentration and alertness. Tea was first written as tu in ancient texts. This caused a good deal of
confusion because the same Chinese character was used for both tea and Chinese sow thistles.
Between 206 B.C. and A.D. 220 a Han Dynasty emperor ruled that when referring to tea, the
characters should be pronounced as cha . From here on, tracing tea s history became easier because tea
acquired its own individual character (Food Timeline).
Cultural Significance
China The Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618 906) was often referred to as the golden age of tea (Food
Timeline). This was the first time that tea was not only

parts of the movie was out of context and confusing. Especially the actor expressions and feelings

Central venous catheters (CVCs) insertion is an important component of management of patients
receiving high dose chemotherapy for haematological malignancies and undergoing stem cell
transplantation.1 All these patients are severely immunocompromised and have prolonged
neutropenia. CVCs facilitate fluid and electrolyte management, chemotherapy and antibiotics
administration and monitoring central venous pressures in this special group of patients. However,
these indwelling catheters require continuous monitoring and special nursing care to prevent and
reduce various infectious and non infectious complications.2

Hannah Arendt Vita Activa Sparknotes
Hannah Arendt, The Vita Activa and the Modern Age Hannah Arendt was German American
philosopher; she wrote The Vita Activa and the Modern Age in 1958. In the passage, Arendt advocates
a three part division of human activities, which include labor, work, and action. Arendt seems to put
stress on action because it is the only activity that goes on directly between men without the
intermediary of things or matter, corresponds to the human condition of plurality, to the fact that men,
not Man, live on the earth and inhabit the world (389). Arendt discusses these parts within four areas:
social, political, private, and public. She states that action is within the public realm. Despite, the
hierarchical structure of these three parts, Arendt

Positive And Negative Effects Of Technological Change
Technological change is an increase in the efficiency of a process (usually done by a machine) which
results in more output, but without input having been increased (Winston, n.d). A specific level of
technological advancement is necessary for productivity and growth in the economy of a country. The
absence of proper technological change retards the economic growth and technological change has
impacted the world by creating new products and processes, increasing efficiency and lowering costs,
and helping economies evolve. Structural unemployment is the situation when the jobs are available
and workers are willing work, but they don t have the required job skills to qualify for the vacant
positions or just simply the mismatch between the jobs available and the skill levels of the
unemployed. Technological change may make some skills obsolete or require new ones. For example,
the introduction of personal computers since the 1980s, has lowered demand for typists who lacked
computer skills (Rittenberg Tregarthen. 2012, p 216). Technological changes have negative effects on
employment. It negatively affects the value the value of workers and automated processes and other
technology have become more important to the process of increasing output. Workers are less
expensive to replace than machines therefore they have become less valuable as a result of
technological change. Government s economic policies have an influence on technology development
and adoption because it helps

Even in a globalized world of countries that are interdependent on one another, there still is progress
to be made. I could not help but smile.
Continuing my run, I reached the Ganges River, and surprisingly found my cousin, Archit, there. He is
studying to become a CA for Price Waterhouse Coopers India office. We talk of life and politics,
although with India s politics it seems the majority of people want progress. Progress for small
businesses and more support for the ideas that they create from both the government and businesses.
I felt obligated to represent my country as best I could, remarking on how Canadian businesses like
Selinger, a construction development company, and Blackberry have successfully entered the market,
created jobs for many unemployed people, and helped found hundreds of new ventures. It s not

Achilles Vs Gilgamesh Research Paper
Many heroes we have read about this semester have been on a voyage to discover what it is they want
out of life. Each of these characters have had their entire existence recorded and recounted by
generations of people living in ancient and medieval times all the way to the present. Two heroes that
grabbed my attention as I read were Achilles and Gilgamesh. The two epic heroes, which are from The
Iliad and The Epic of Gilgamesh, share similarities and differences such as their divinity, mortality
and close friendships.
One of the major similarities Gilgamesh and Achilles share is that they both have divine mothers and
mortal fathers, although Gilgamesh does have something that Achilles doesn t. Gilgamesh, who is two

Gilgamesh dreams of immortality, while Achilles viewed dying as a warrior s sincerest form of
integrity. Gilgamesh s divine lineage gave him unrivaled brutality and ambition as king of Uruk. He
saw himself as a full blooded god, a conviction that blinded him at first and caused people throughout
the city of Uruk to believe he was capable of winning any battle. It isn t until later that the reader sees
his human side and learns he is unable to vanquish everything in his way. Achilles is also known for
his god like strength, but his decision to live a shortened life that is filled with brilliance over a
lengthier life that wasn t as magnificent caused him to be much more conscious of his mortality than
Gilgamesh. Achilles, like Gilgamesh, was given incredible abilities by the gods. In both of these
stories the gods serve as beings who constantly interfere with human lives, and they frequently show
themselves to be capable of affecting everyday occurrences. Achilles ability to recognize he wasn t
invincible made the gods more eager to work with him. He formed a close relationship with many of
them, which made him a valued power and also won him admiration from friends and enemies alike.
On the other hand, Gilgamesh was reported to the gods by the people he ruled over, and was scorned

a thunderbolt hit as well. A thunderbolt is something that is beyond our control, a phenomenon that
one day strikes your team/business. The thunderbolt that hindered the Lakers was the injury bug. The
Lakers lost their Rookie of the Year James Worthy, the defensive anchor Bob McAdoo, and their lights
out shooter Norm Nixon. After losing three key role players, it is easy for a team to feel sympathetic in
the midst of a title run. But sympathy is the junk food of the soul, it contains nothing uplifting and
ultimately is a negative emotion. A winning team prepares itself for the adversity it is certain to
encounter along the way to success. Adversity should almost be welcomed because it forces the team

The Music Of Duke Ellington
I attended the Jazz Ensembles Concert, The Music of Duke Ellington, on Wednesday, September 30,
2015 at the Griffin Concert Hall, University Center for the Arts. I was not really sure what to expect
since I had never experienced Jazz in a concert hall setting, however, I believe I am still able to make
an informed and unbiased review.
Not only was this my first Jazz concert, but it was also my first time visiting the University Center for
the Arts. I was greeted immediately and with a very welcoming attitude by staff that was willing to
guide me in the right direction when locating the entrance to the Griffin Concert Hall. I felt for such a
professional environment I should have been paying a lot of money to be enjoying a show at this
facility. Proceeding into the concert hall I observed a nearly every seat full with people of all ages. I
sat rather close to the stage so I could get a good look and really observe facial expressions and
demeanor of the personnel.
After peaking though my program to better understand what to expect throughout the concert, I
realized there were going to be two performances with 2 different ensembles as well as directors.

Chronic illness trajectory framework, purpose illness in eight phases, from dying with each possessing
the possibilities of reversals, plateaus and upward or downward movement allows for a
conceptualization of the course of illness to comprehensively direct care and conduct research

Bird Species in Belize Essay
This past week in Belize was undoubtedly one of the best experiences I have ever had. In the special
topics biology class, I learned so much about the ecology, culture, and history of the newly established
country. Not to mention, I obtained a new respect for ornithology and a new interest in birds. About
the size of Manhattan and with a population of almost 350,000 people, Belize surprisingly holds
approximately 500 species of birds. We were able to spot 135 species of birds during our stay and also
learned about a few mutualism relationships.
One of the greatest mutualism relationships is between the ants and the bullhorn acacias. The ants live
in the hollow bullhorns and protect the tree, making sure there is no vegetation to harm it. ... Show

The seeds are in a pod and have a very pungent odor resembling dried, old, sweaty underwear.
Guanacaste seeds can only be planted if their protective covers are punctuated and this is usually
performed by large mammals. Now, there are only cattle and horses to perform this duty in Belie; thus,
seed dispersal is rare.
Mimosa pudica is a touch sensitive plant that will close its leaflets inward when touched. It is found
on the ground or on plants and is relatively small in size. The tour guide at the Community Baboon
Sanctuary said that the plants were used when slaves were in Belize. Closed mimosas would show
runaway slaves the escape path.
At the Community Baboon Sanctuary, many other plants were noted. Smilax tendrils, also called cat
claw, were used as a form of birth control. Aerial roots are a favorite of the black howler monkeys.
The roots can be smoked and help people quit smoking. The cohune have many uses such as: makes
furniture, rings, wine, massage oil, stops infections and more. The miconia leaves have an orange
substance at the end that is used as a ringworm cure. Purple vervines is used as a treatment of
leukemia. Melastoma leaves are favored by monkeys, very soft and can be a replacement to toilet
paper. The tourist tree, called because its red skin will peel like tourists, is used in gumbo.

A Strategic Initiative On Ifrs Standards
A Strategic Initiative on IFRS Standards
The accounting world is shaped by stringent and clear rules, principles, standards and guidelines.
These are all meant to define accounting operations and reporting discipline. With the emergence of
International Accounting Standards (IAS), which was later replaced by International Financial
Reporting Standards (IFRS), the accounting concepts, analysis, disclosures, reporting and presentation
became easier and practical. Currently, accountants, managers and related parties find it concrete and
consistent in protecting professional boundaries.
Being important to the discipline of accounting, the objectives of IFRS and IAS are to give guidance
on the presentation of financial statements. IFRS as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The board acknowledges the diverse nature of regulatory framework in developing concrete and

demonstrating the understanding of complex issues in accounting. Moreover, help in demonstrating

financial statements.
With complete notion and awareness of how each country has their set of rules, the goal of IFRS is to
provide a global framework for how public companies prepare and disclose their financial statements
(Rouse, 2011). This view is meant to provide general guidelines, as well as international comparisons
through conventional and edifying means. To bring broader and vivid objectives, IFRS replaced IAS,
the older standards, in order to bring a more comprehensive and simplified accounting procedures.
IFRS addresses practical application issues that any entity is supposed and expected to encounter
within the standards. These practical issues provide a comprehensive analysis. For instance, IFRS 1
provides extensive guidelines ...and addresses practical application issues that a first time adopter of
IFRSs could expect to encounter when transitioning to IFRSs . (KPMG, 2009). The IFRS, being

The artist Thomas Cole was born in 1801, in England. He was an immigrant in the United States, his

different states including, Ohio, Philadelphia and in Pittsburgh where he work all over the place

In this painting we see an infant that is in a boat. Behind the infant there is an angel that is guiding the
child out of a cave into a beautiful landscape. Thomas Cole paints the landscape very rich; you get o a
sense of warmth and calmness. There is beautiful green land, big mountains, and different types of
flowers.
According to the website Exploring Thomas Cole, there are different types of allegories in this
painting. The first allegory is the hourglass that is in the boat. The hourglass is meant to represent
time, the second allegory is the river, which is meant to represent the stream of life, and the third
allegory is the flower, which is an Egyptian lotus, which Cole described as symbolical of Human Life.
Finally the cave that the infant and the angel are coming out of according to Thomas Cole is an
emblematic of our earthly origin, and the mysterious Past. Cole uses different types of light and dark
colors it gives the painting a different look, the light colors fade and so does the dark colors, this is
called chiaroscuro. Perspective was also used in this painting; different parts of the painting have
different sizes giving us a sense of depth.
The second painting, Youth, painted in 1842, oil on canvas, 53 in × 76 in, continues to have a beautiful
green landscape, we still see trees, flowers, mountains, and now we see a castle in the back. In this
painting the view is widening. The child from the last painting now looks like adolescent. The

Psychoanalytical Criticism of “a Good Man Is Hard to Find”
Psychoanalytical Criticism of A Good Man Is Hard To Find
A seemingly innocent family vacation can turn into a disaster if the members of the family only care
about themselves. In the story A Good Man Is Hard To Find by Flannery O Connor, a self absorbed
Grandmother, too consumed with her own opinions, fails to address the views, feelings and overall
well being of others. Her family is not much different in their self interested ways. This leads them
straight to the Misfit whose childhood trauma has caused him to grow up into a damaged individual.
The Misfit does not believe in the Grandmother s religious beliefs and she ultimately cannot reach out

According to Freud, the unconscious [mind] continues to influence our behavior and experience, even
though we are unaware of these underlying influences (Cherry). So, because of this, he sacrifices
humanity to deal with the pain and thinks nothing of it. Another reason for killing his father could be
he was suffering from the Oedipal Complex. The Misfit says, God never made a finer woman than my
mother (O Connor). The Oedipal Complex would refer that the Misfit has, fallen in love with one
parent and developed hatred for the other (Gill). His desire for his mother drove him to eliminate his
father. Unlike the Grandmother, religion was not a factor for the Misfit. He thought God, shown
everything off balance (O Connor). He believed rationally only what he could sense. O Connor made
this one of the Misfit s greatest faults. To Summarize, the Misfit s experiences and religious disbelief
kept him from being a recognizably good person in O Connor s eyes. Though the family did not turn
to violence like the Misfit, they still had their own set of issues. The other members of the family seem
to be embodiments of society s most self interested and materialistic. O Connor illustrates that with
each generation of this family, there were no positive role models. Each generation had no effective
parent to exhibit the correct way to function in society. Each generation then was stuck in

Treatment Of Women In The Gospels Essay
In the beginning, women s status and freedoms were severely limited. Many people may believe that
they had started off with just as many obligations as men, but that is not the case at all. Actually, it is
the complete opposite, women had nothing when it came to the early days of the Gospel. That is until
Jesus came around and changed things. Here we will discuss three very important details of women in
the Gospels. We will discuss women in ancient Israel around the time of Jesus and how they were
expected to act, then we will move on to Jesus radical treatment of women and how Jesus was
technically, in today s definition, a feminist , finally we will discuss passages where Jesus apparently
does not call for equality of the sexes. All in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jesus teaching must have seemed very radical. How Jesus treated women was dramatically different
from how they were treated among the Jewish society. He consistently treated men and women as
equals. Which in today s society is the definition of a Feminist. According to Dictionary.com, Feminist
means advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men. Jesus
violated many of the Old Testament regulations, which specified gender inequality. He refused to
follow the rules that were established by the three main religious groups of the day. Those three
religious groups consisted of the Essenes, Pharisees and Sadducees. There are many examples on the
Jesus radical treatment of women, one would include how he taught women students. Jewish tradition
at the time was to not allow women to be taught. In Luke 10:38 42, he taught Mary, sister of Martha.
Jesus also used terminology which treated women as equal to men. For example, in Luke 13:16 it
describes how Jesus cured a women from a Satanic Spirit. He called her a daughter of Abraham,
therefore implying that she had equal status with sons of Abraham. Another example of Jesus use of
terminology can be described in Luke 7:35 to 8:50 where it is described how Jesus forgave a woman s
sins. He refers to women and men as children of

North And South By Elizabeth Gaskell Essay
North and south is considered as the significant piece of Victorian literature, written by Elizabeth
Gaskell. Elizabeth Gaskell was a novelist and short story writer. Her stories usually have a
contemporary attitude she emphasized more on the women s role, complex and realistic female
characters. North and south is considered as her best known work .It features a strong lead female ,a
mature love story and relevant social and political explanation about industrialization and class
conflict present in mid 19th century in England. Through, North and south, Elizabeth Gaskell
challenges the limiting gender roles of the Victorian era , by giving her heroin , Margaret both the
feminine qualities of virtue and selflessness and Masculine qualities of independence and action .
Gaskell perfectly balances her heroin between feminine and the masculine world as to not to appear
unwomanly and subtly influence the readers and call for changing gender norms. During Victorian era
novelist had to develop ways to avoid posing as threats to the order of the society . Something which
even make the look anti feminist, but still many of female writers of that period are known today for

In doing so, this suggests that even though he is of a higher rank than them they don t see him this way
and see no need to pay attention to him. Bob would be therefore losing his higher status and is trying
to regain it by delivering an influential speech.
During the dialogue between Wild Bob and Billy it is important to note the act of turn taking. As Billy
withholds participation, Bob is forced to speak again, meaning that turn taking is not fulfilled here.
This gives the impression that Billy is a weak character who isn t really aware of the situation and
appears to have little knowledge about the topic. Billy couldn t remember the outfit he was from
(Vonnegut 1969: 55).
As Bob speaks for longer, and has a lot more turns in the conversation than Billy it shows that he in
charge of the soldiers and his status is evident through this conversation. He also controls the topic of
the conversation. Again, this displays that despite his physical and mental health he is still a strong,
sure and higher status soldier than Billy and it is evident that Billy recognises this.
Next I will discuss the characterisation throughout my extract. Firstly I will consider how thought is
represented. The main representation of thought that the narrator uses is indirect though. This can be
seen firstly where the narrator reports on what Roland Weary is thinking All Weary could think about
was the agony in his own feet (Vonnegut 1969: 55). This type of

The Cask Of Amontillado Chapter 1 Summary
This story tells about premature murder. Poe uses first person viewpoints because in a first person
view human weakness is apparent. The action and dialogue of the charters add a great deal of value to
the plot. Montresor tells the story of the night when he took his revenge on Fortunato, a fellow
nobleman. Angry over some vague insult, he plans to murder his friend during Carnival, a celebration
like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Montresor chooses to wait until Fortunato is drunk and cannot
understand what is going on. Montresor attracts him into the catacombs to try a cask of amontillado
and then seals him away to die there. The story s setting adds to the atmosphere of horror, as Poe s
usage of time and place cause the readers to predict the next action. The festival gives Montresor an

There is no investigation of Montresor s crime and the criminal himself explains how he committed
the murder more than a half century earlier. He never faces criminal punishment for his wicked
actions. The mystery is in Montresor s motive for killing. His motive is uncertain other than the vague
thousand injuries that he has suffered at the hands of Fortunato to which he mentions. Montresor tries
to convince the reader that his intentions are honorable in an effort to maintain his family motto Nemo
me impune lacessit (No one insults me with impunity). Irony, both dramatic and verbal, plays a
significant part in this process. Dramatic irony occurs when the reader becomes painfully mindful of
what will become of Fortunato even though he continues his descent into the catacombs in search of
the Amontillado. Poe adds to this effect by calling the character Fortunato. It is ironic that a man of
misfortune is named Fortunato, and dressing him in a fool s costume since Montresor means to make a

A Student s Academic Success
A college campus is purposefully built to help students succeed. Many campuses include a library,
sports fields, computer labs, a gym, among other shops, food vendors, and resources for students. It is
safe to make the claim that a college library is the most useful building on a college campus.
Everything a student needs to succeed can be found in the library. From the quiet atmosphere, to the
useful resources, and helpful staff and students, the library contributes a large part to a student s
academic success at Cumberland County College. As part of a student s academic success, he or she
must feel comfortable in his or her working environment. The college library provides the perfect
atmosphere to fulfill wide variety of student needs. Every student has a different study technique,
some prefer a quiet, low stress atmosphere, while others prefer to have music and Facebook as

A Good Samaritan is a helpful person (Referenced to Luke 10:33) so , having a Good samaritan law
would fine or punish people who have failed to report or aid those in need. A Good Samaritan law
would expand the active bystander population and be able to apply to all people. However, it would be
more reasonable to have the formal punishments replaced , which are being imprisoned and excessive
fines. These punishments are a bit to extreme and unfair to all people because not everybody would be
able to physically call/help those in distress. Imagine you were blind and/or deaf walking in a
boardwalk. Suddenly you think the day is calm and breezy but a someone fell in the water and was

A Good Samaritan law would have better alternatives for the punishments would be a warning, a
bystander prevention class and if you couldn t physically help, an excuse card just like a handicapped

Tannen And Sontag
Women have historically been seen as sex objects while men have been seen as success objects. by
Deborah Tannen s Marked Women and, A Woman s Beauty: Put Down or Power Source? by Susan
Sontag, The Men We Carry in Our Minds by Scott Russell Sanders, and Man Bashing: Trivial Pursuits
or a Truth with Consequences? by Warren Farrell discuss these two sides to gender roles. While
Sanders and Farrell make some quality points about men s struggle in society, overall, Tannen and
Sontag present a stronger argument about the challenges women face in today s society.
Tannen and Sontag argue that women are made to be sex objects by society; they are pressured to try
to look beautiful while also being degraded as superficial and inept. As Sontag ... Show more content

Sander s essay focuses on his childhood when men were working in manual labor jobs for the most
part and women largely staying at home. This is not the case in today s society where women are also
expected to get jobs most of the time. In this way, the burden on men to bring in the money has
lessoned but women still face the pressure of being beautiful. Tannen exposes this more current set of
problems for women when she discusses the expectation that women look presentable at work. She
writes, The range of women s hairstyles is staggering, but a woman whose hair has no particular style
is perceived as not caring about how she looks, which can disqualify her for many positions, and will
subtly diminish her as a person in the eyes of some. Whereas men do not have to think about their
hairstyles and general appearance for work men s hair has to be unusual to be marked and no makeup
is unmarked for men women must consider how much makeup and what hair do they will do. Every
style for women is marked and not taking the time to decide on a style marks a woman as not put
together. Even the arguments that Farrell brings up for what problems men face in today s society
which are often invalid seem inconsequential compared to the points Tannen and Sontag make about
the daily struggles women face. Farrell makes points such as the one that self help writers voice only
women s side of the argument about toilet seats being put down after men use the toilet. No one
suggests thanking the man for putting it up so he gets nothing on it. And no one asks why a woman
expects the toilet to always be as it is in women s rooms, and never as half the toilets are in men s
rooms: urinals, he debates. Practically, his idea that all

Greek and Roman Architectural Influences in Modern Society...
There are many imitations, and reproductions of Greek and Roman forms in the modern society of
today. Even though the times of the great Ancient Greek and Roman Empires have passed, people of
today are still able to honor their legacy with their long lasting influences on modern society today,
especially in architecture. If one just looks at today s style of buildings, they can see the similarities
between the two different time spans.
Back in the golden days of Greece, one of the top priorities to the Grecian people was how big and
impressive their way of life was, and this included their houses, and public buildings. The primary
type of definitive Greek building was the temple. Many of these temples were built on a large hill

( Classical Greek Architecture 616) (Reid 26)
Along came the Mycenaean Period after the Minoan Period, in 1500 BC. This mainland Grecian
society was very different from the Minoans. While the Minoans of Crete were laidback, these
Grecians were much more militaristic and practical, much like how the Roman Empire was, except
there were individual communities often warring with each other. Also, the Mycenaean cities were
dominated by gigantic citadels, or huge fortresses, that were strategically placed on ground that was
higher than the rest of the city, and were protected by massive walls that were made of limestone,
which were entered by a great set of fortified gates. There are some similarities between the
Mycenaean and Minoan people. Much like the Minoan palaces, the grand house for the important
members of the Mycenaean group had many large rooms that were built around a central courtyard as
well. The central courtyard had a distinctive feature called the megaron, which was an elliptical hall
that was used for both domestic and ceremonial purposes. It took up one side of the courtyard and had
a grand front porch and vestibule. Other than the megaron in the courtyard, the only other difference
between the two periods was that in the Mycenaean Period, the rooms of the palace were much
smaller and more compact, again resembling the practicality of Rome s architecture instead of the
grandness and beauty of Grecian architecture. (Reid 26)

Summary Of Arm Wrestling With My Father By Brad Manning
In Arm Wrestling with my Father by Brad Manning uses: symbolism, tone, and imagery throughout
his story. What Manning s Story is about is Manning and his father s tough love bond they share. The
story shows us on how Manning s father shows his affection towards his son, and its not by expressing
them verbally or giving him affection, and attention like his mother would. He would only show him
that he loved him through helping him in sports and arm wrestling. Throughout the story when
Manning gets older his father is at an old age where Manning can beat him. Manning let s his father
win because he felt sorry for his father and as Manning said his arms were the ones that protected
them (Manning 124). Manning knew further on the story his father ... Show more content on

Manning described it so well I could clearly picture it in my head when Manning said I d shout, and it
would start. And I would tense up, concentrating and strainging and trying to push his wrist down to
the carpet with all my weight and strength. But Dad would always win; I always had to lose (Manning
121). Manning would be upset but the word choice Manning uses for this section of the story is great
imagery.
Another reason Manning didn t beat his father was that he was getting to an age where he isn t as
strong as he use to be. Manning describes his father s arm at first when Manning was a strong tree
branch but since he came back from school during winter break he said his arm looks aged (para7).
Another great example Manning uses for imagery. The theme of Arm Wrestling with my father how
Manning father gradually changes his method of affection he displays towards his son once Manning
is older. In the beginning of the story Manning tells us how his father did not show any attention on
the other achievements his son made in school like orchestra or his writing, only in sports. For
example, as Manning said It was not because he wasn t proud of Manning, it was probably because he
just wanted his son to be tough and strong like him or better. Manning s father did love Manning, but
it was very difficult for him to show his son he

Flashbacks In Chocolat
The book Chocolat by Joanne Harris looks at the life of single mother chocolatier named Vianne and
the struggles she endures at the hand of a small French village after she moves there during the
beginning of Lent. Vianne quickly meets many different characters around the town from the straight
laced Father Reynaud to Josephine, a woman struggling in an abusive relationship. Each of the
characters face their own struggles throughout the story and Joanne Harris has used different
techniques to make the audience sympathise with the characters including point of view, symbolism
and flashbacks. The book in written in first perspective and the point of view switches between the

Vianne s childhood and her bohemian mother has affected her greatly and created her fears of the
black man and settling down. The flashbacks foreshadow and show her mother s death and give a
glimpse off the struggles she faced due to being a child of a single mother who travelled around.
Seeing the struggles makes the audience sympathise with Vianne as they have seen what she has lived
through and the lifestyle s effect on her attitudes and behaviour. They also provide background for her
dislike towards the church due to her experience with condescending church members. This parallels
the response to Vianne raising Anouk alone that makes the reader further sympathetic as she is
experiencing what her mother went through. I envy the table s calm sense of peace. It has been here a
long time. It belongs. This line shows her childhood s impact on her. Due to the constant travelling
and moving she feels as if she belongs nowhere and she desperately wants to but, even as I slide into
sleep I find myself considering the thought, not only with longing but with disbelief , she doesn t
believe she can belong

Art And Its Impact On Arts
Art Enriches Art does not solve problems, but makes us aware of their existence, sculptor Magdalena
Abakanowicz has said. The ability to express oneself with arts has been not only therapeutic but
educational. Arts learning can improve motivation, confidence, and teamwork. Art can encompass
many different activities .Being a New Orleanian we are surrounded by all types of art. We don t
always take advantage of this rich cultural and sightsee all the city has to offer. That is why after years
of living here I have decided to explore. I stop by the Saenger Theatre located on Canal Street.
According to the Saenger official website, the Saenger Theatre opened on February 4, 1927. This
source claims the theatre took three years to build and cost $2.5 million. The building is such a staple
on Canal. Before its renovation in 2013, the outside of it looked like something I could pass up easily
especially during the daytime. Now as I walked on the sidewalk. I see on the outside of the building a
timeline of historical events. I could not help admiring the facts posted around the building. They were
vibrant colored pictures detailing some facts about the Saenger and some fascinating historical events.
A notable picture talks about the first talkie to debut at the Saenger which was Lights of New York.
Walking inside I feel a high class aura that also feels welcoming. High extravagant ceilings was one of
things I noticed in the lobby.

Monochronic Culture And Western Culture In The Workplace
1. Introduction Have you ever think about you as an eastern people are going to work in the western
country? Do you think you will face a lot of problems not only the weather but also the culture shock?
As we know that western culture and eastern culture is totally different. Not only the life style but also
the working style. There are many different kinds of examples about the culture in the workplace. To
know all the different culture between your own country and other country is important, so that we
will not offend to other people. Today we are going look at the different between western country and
eastern country. 2. Working style 2.1 Time focus It is very common to see employees pick up their
phones every time or even during an important meeting. This is a normal thing you can see in a
policeronic culture. Taiwan is polychronic culture, Taiwanese are emphasis on personal and doing
work more flexibility, they are willing to change the deadline when there is in need. So they can have
long term relationship with their colleagues, managers and partnership. People with monochronic
culture are more concentrate on time and would like to do a thing in one time. They prefer well
organized and stick on their plain. This is how monochronic culture works. (文匯報, 2012) Sweden is
monochronic culture, so employees do not like to be interrupted by phone calls during the meeting or
going to meet others in the meeting. They think this will influence their working schedule. 2.2

Comparing The Perfect Storm And Super Natural Disasters Of...
Both excerpts provide thorough descriptions on the causes and effects of disasters. The excerpt from
Super Natural Disasters of the 21st Century demonstrates three massive natural disasters that recently
occurred and the devastation that developed as a result. Similarly, the excerpt from The Perfect Storm
combines factual information with a personal anecdote on the experience of an intensive storm.
Although both authors provide causes and effects on natural disasters, they use juxtaposed strategies
and techniques in order to support their claim.
The authors, Jacqueline Adams and Ken Kostel, who wrote the excerpt Super Natural Disasters of the
21st Century, adequately describe the causes and effects of disasters in different ways. For example, in

Attractiveness of locations, quality of rooms amp; services, and company s global operations are some
of the key criteria for hotels. Hilton already has a strong presence in the U.S and is expanding its
global operations through acquisitions. For example, Hilton acquired the U.K based Hilton
International in February 2006 to establish a footprint in the U.K. It also signed a multi year
agreement with a leading resort real estate developer in Thailand, Destination Properties, to manage a
newly built, 358 room golf resort and spa in Thailand. Hilton is also increasingly relying on the
franchisee based model for growth. This enables the company to earn revenues without incurring any

They showed part of the land, but the land is so large that it covers the majority of South America. Argentina is one of the many places to border Brazil as well as the Atlantic Ocean. Well, to go with all of this land that they have population and it is through the roof. Southern Brazil is one of the most populated areas it is just behind Tokyo. It is more populated than most of Latin America and accounts for most of the Latina community. This is interesting considering that approximately 8000 years ago people were spotted here. That is all in the North the South similar to America is Barbeque. They took the entire animal after marinating and cooked it on a long skewer over an open fire. They do not even move it from the skewer when it comes to serving it. It is simply removed using a butchers knife and is cut onto the plate. However, this is just part of the cuisine of the southern areas. The national dish was rumored to have been inspired by African slaves. Who were brought over to Brazil by Spain. This led to Africa having a large influence on their cuisine including the national dish. Better known as a stew, and served with rice, greens and orange slices. Now, the meat that they used for the stew is those of the cheaper kinds. Seems they were slaves, they only got to really eat the masters leftovers and scraps. The often included pigs feet, which is the authentic way. I keep referring to it as a dish, but it more like a miniature feast considering everything that is served with it and yet alone the ingredients in the stew. But, there is something that they consume almost every single meal and that is Manioc. Manioc is actually a vegetable that they utilize as their flour. Opportunities and Threats facing the U.S Airline Industry The health of the overall U.S airline industry is still tenuous in spite of the passenger traffic volumes returning to pre 9/11 levels. A survey estimated that from 2001 through 2003, the US airline industry reported to have lost $23.2 billion dollars, compounded by an additional $1.6 billion in the first quarter of 2004. This $24.8 billion shortfall exceeds the total profits earned over the entire six year period 1995 2000 Drastic changes in the Economic, Political/legal and technological segment of airline s external environment contributed to some of the major looses seen by the industry. A recent survey of the airline economic health suggested that even though the industry hoped to return to some degree of stability, if not profitability, yet new costs beyond the airlines control wiped out recent efforts to cut costs and achieve new efficiencies. Record high oil prices and nation s on going war on terrorism have presented new barriers to improving the industry s financial health. Another cost factor that is heavily contributing to the overall cost is the Aviation Security Infrastructure fee (ASIF). This fee is enforced after Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA) which necessitated additional security at the airports. This fee is expected to rise to $750million in 2005 from $315 million in 2000. This fee is in additional to the additional federal security mandates imposed since 9/11. The industry argues that impact of federal security mandate and foregone revenue totals $2.8 billion per year. The statute that directs FAA to extend war risk insurance to U.S airlines and air cargo carriers is set to expire on August 31st of this year. Since there is no commercial market for this type of insurance, the industry could obtain coverage for only limited utility that could potentially cost the airline industry several hundred millions of dollars annually in ... • 4. Cultural Development Of Ancient China Ella Sarachan 12/3/2015 Ethnography of Tea Background China The origins of tea are rooted in China (Food Timeline). According to legend, the beneficial properties of tea were first discovered by the Emperor Shen Nung in the year 2737 B.C. He drank only boiled water for hygienic purposes, and one day while he drank a breeze rustled the branches of a tree and a few leaves fell into his cup. Creating the first cup of tea. It is challenging to know whether or not the emperor was real or just a part of the spiritual and cultural development of ancient China. China was not unified as an empire until the third century, so it is unlikely emperors existed back then. One thing that is known is that tea was popular in China thousands of years ago. The first written reference of tea is in the third century B.C. A famous surgeon recommended the beverage to patients to increase concentration and alertness. Tea was first written as tu in ancient texts. This caused a good deal of confusion because the same Chinese character was used for both tea and Chinese sow thistles. Between 206 B.C. and A.D. 220 a Han Dynasty emperor ruled that when referring to tea, the characters should be pronounced as cha . From here on, tracing tea s history became easier because tea acquired its own individual character (Food Timeline). Cultural Significance China The Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618 906) was often referred to as the golden age of tea (Food Timeline). This was the first time that tea was not only ... In the passage, Arendt advocates a three part division of human activities, which include labor, work, and action. Arendt seems to put stress on action because it is the only activity that goes on directly between men without the intermediary of things or matter, corresponds to the human condition of plurality, to the fact that men, not Man, live on the earth and inhabit the world (389). Arendt discusses these parts within four areas: social, political, private, and public. She states that action is within the public realm. • 13. Positive And Negative Effects Of Technological Change Technological change is an increase in the efficiency of a process (usually done by a machine) which results in more output, but without input having been increased (Winston, n.d). A specific level of technological advancement is necessary for productivity and growth in the economy of a country. The absence of proper technological change retards the economic growth and technological change has impacted the world by creating new products and processes, increasing efficiency and lowering costs, and helping economies evolve. Structural unemployment is the situation when the jobs are available and workers are willing work, but they don t have the required job skills to qualify for the vacant positions or just simply the mismatch between the jobs available and the skill levels of the unemployed. Technological change may make some skills obsolete or require new ones. For example, the introduction of personal computers since the 1980s, has lowered demand for typists who lacked computer skills (Rittenberg Tregarthen. 2012, p 216). Technological changes have negative effects on employment. It negatively affects the value the value of workers and automated processes and other technology have become more important to the process of increasing output. Each of these characters have had their entire existence recorded and recounted by generations of people living in ancient and medieval times all the way to the present. Two heroes that grabbed my attention as I read were Achilles and Gilgamesh. The two epic heroes, which are from The Iliad and The Epic of Gilgamesh, share similarities and differences such as their divinity, mortality and close friendships. The selection process used to select Correctional Officer has recently been transformed through the ongoing LEAN process. In the spirit of continuous improvement, the agency has examined the physical fitness selection tool used to assess CO applicants and Cadets ability to perform the job of Correctional Officer. The agency entered into an agreement with a private firm, Industrial Onsite Network (ION), to conduct an analysis of the current physical fitness standards used in the Correctional Officer selection and training process and how well they correlate to the actual tasks that CO s perform on a daily basis. The standards that are currently used in the hiring process and COTA graduation were implemented after a similar study that was completed in 1991. Since that study was completed in 1991, many changes have occurred in the Correctional field. Advancements have occurred not only with the technology we use in our field of work, such as electronic gates and doors, but also in the medical/physical and testing fields. The apartheid policy describes the system of racial discrimination and white political domination adopted by the South African National Party after its rise to power. This essay will critically examine the historical significance of the Nationalist Party s influence during its governance from 1948 to 1994. Additionally, this paper will analyse the social, political, economic and cultural impact of the Nationalist apartheid legislation. Furthermore, it will examine several major resistance campaigns and significant historical figures that gave rise to the cessation of the apartheid legislation under new democratic rule, including the effects of the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960 and the transformative force of anti apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. Since the colonisation of South Africa by the Dutch in the 17th, century, the consolidation of the influence of the whites remained a prominent element of Afrikaner culture until its formal cessation in 1994 (United States Department of State nd). The election of the purified National Party in 1948 distinguished the enforcement of aggressive policies in an effort to maintain white supremacy in South Africa. It is in this glorious achievement that the world can truly see Serling s genius, because when we are made aware of our mistakes as people, there can be no excuse for what we continue to do. A bystander is a person who is present at an incident but does not report or assist the person. The problem with bystanders today in our society is that they don t take action when they witness people in peril and the outcomes are most likely to be assaults or deaths. We tend to believe that bystanders are depraved, indifferent, and heartless but in reality they may be afraid or don t want to be involved in the incident. A Good Samaritan law would expand the active bystander population and be able to apply to all people. However, it would be more reasonable to have the formal punishments replaced , which are being imprisoned and excessive fines. These punishments are a bit to extreme and unfair to all people because not everybody would be able to physically call/help those in distress. Suddenly you think the day is calm and breezy but a someone fell in the water and was drowning and nobody is around to help and you yourself can t physically help. While Sanders and Farrell make some quality points about men s struggle in society, overall, Tannen and Sontag present a stronger argument about the challenges women face in today s society. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sander s essay focuses on his childhood when men were working in manual labor jobs for the most part and women largely staying at home. This is not the case in today s society where women are also expected to get jobs most of the time. In this way, the burden on men to bring in the money has lessoned but women still face the pressure of being beautiful. Tannen exposes this more current set of problems for women when she discusses the expectation that women look presentable at work. She writes, The range of women s hairstyles is staggering, but a woman whose hair has no particular style is perceived as not caring about how she looks, which can disqualify her for many positions, and will subtly diminish her as a person in the eyes of some. Whereas men do not have to think about their hairstyles and general appearance for work men s hair has to be unusual to be marked and no makeup is unmarked for men women must consider how much makeup and what hair do they will do. Every style for women is marked and not taking the time to decide on a style marks a woman as not put together. Even the arguments that Farrell brings up for what problems men face in today s society which are often invalid seem inconsequential compared to the points Tannen and Sontag make about the daily struggles women face. Farrell makes points such as the one that self help writers voice only women s side of the argument about toilet seats being put down after men use the toilet. No one suggests thanking the man for putting it up so he gets nothing on it. Even though the times of the great Ancient Greek and Roman Empires have passed, people of today are still able to honor their legacy with their long lasting influences on modern society today, especially in architecture. If one just looks at today s style of buildings, they can see the similarities between the two different time spans. ( Classical Greek Architecture 616) (Reid 26) Along came the Mycenaean Period after the Minoan Period, in 1500 BC. This mainland Grecian society was very different from the Minoans. While the Minoans of Crete were laidback, these Grecians were much more militaristic and practical, much like how the Roman Empire was, except there were individual communities often warring with each other. Also, the Mycenaean cities were dominated by gigantic citadels, or huge fortresses, that were strategically placed on ground that was higher than the rest of the city, and were protected by massive walls that were made of limestone, which were entered by a great set of fortified gates. There are some similarities between the Mycenaean and Minoan people. Much like the Minoan palaces, the grand house for the important members of the Mycenaean group had many large rooms that were built around a central courtyard as well. The central courtyard had a distinctive feature called the megaron, which was an elliptical hall that was used for both domestic and ceremonial purposes. It took up one side of the courtyard and had a grand front porch and vestibule. Other than the megaron in the courtyard, the only other difference between the two periods was that in the Mycenaean Period, the rooms of the palace were much smaller and more compact, again resembling the practicality of Rome s architecture instead of the grandness and beauty of Grecian architecture.
