Rhetorical Devices In Waiting For Superman
Director, Davis Guggenheim, in the film Waiting for Superman, tells the untold stories of five children
waiting for their opportunity to go to a better school. Guggenheim s purpose is to convey the idea that
some schools are waiting for their superman to come save the day. In Waiting for Superman, Davis
Guggenheim uses a variety of rhetorical devices to show how the education system is corrupt and
what is being done to fix this system. Guggenheim appeals to the viewer s emotions by providing
many heartbreaking stories from the five children being interviewed. There is nothing more pitiful
than puppy being kicked or a toy being taken away from a baby. The director uses the element of
sympathy to create an attachment between the audience and the children. In the interview, Bianca is a
six year old girl who has been anticipating her 1st grade graduation since the first day of school.
Unfortunately, she will not be unable to attend her own graduation. Bianca has a single mom unable to

What makes Waiting for Superman such a well rounded documentary is the reliable sources
Guggenheim pulls from. A major figure in the film was Geoffrey Canada. Geoffrey Canada is an
American educator and has been president of the Harlem Children s Zone. He is in charge of
improving education for kids in Harlem, New York, having the highest drop out rate in the area. Also
interviewed in the documentary was Michelle Rhee, head of school district in Washington D.C. She
has been trying to make teachers more accountable and remove tenure, the inability to fire teachers
without a just cause . Both these leaders have been working in the education department for a long
time and are advocates for education reform. They know the problems and concerns of the system
from years of experience and have dedicated their lives to coming up with a

The Reflection Of The Human Eye Work
How does the human eye work?
The cornea is clear and at the front of the eye. When light rays enter it, the cornea refracts it through
the pupil and then the iris. The iris controls how much light may pass through the pupil by expanding
or shrinking. Next, the light ray will enter the lens. This also refracts light by changing its shape with
the help of the ciliary muscles and the suspensory ligaments. The light will go through a dense jelly
like tissue named the vitreous humour and eventually focused at the back of the eye onto the retina.
The retina is a light sensitive tissue and covered with rods and cones. These receptors will capture the
light ray and transform it into electrical impulses. They get sent off through the nerve fibres, then the
optic nerve, and then finally the brain. The picture given by the retina is upside down so our brain will
next turn it the right way up.
Our bodies have the capability to endure large scars but, a slight scar on the cornea can lead up to our
vision becoming impaired. The retina will process the light rays, into light impulses that need to be
transferred to the brain to create an image, which are focused on to them by the cornea. So, any deep
injures experienced by the cornea can lead to corneal scarring which would affect our vision.
Focusing on near and distant objects
People that have trouble focusing in near or a distant object is due the light rays entering their eyes are
unable to focus on the retina. This is a very common

The City And Parts Of The Soul
Another premise is how justice is a craft with a particular function. All conventional items that human
beings use have a purpose otherwise its useless. Even the most ridiculous products sold on
infomercials are designed for a specific purpose. Although products being sold on infomercials are
ridiculous for being invented with a purpose in mind, but do not function well and generally make the
user of the product look foolish. Like conventional items justice has a function. However it is
important that a thing s function is the work that it alone can do, or can do better than anyone else (I.
353a). Basically, Plato is assuming that we, human beings are dependent on each other and working
together will create a more sustainable society for all. It makes sense for every individual to specialize
in a task and can trade goods or services with one another. Plato further applies this concept to his
analogy of the city and parts of the soul.
In the creation of a city, and for the soul to be justice it has a particular hierarchical formation. For
building the ideal city, Socrates divides people into three types of classes: the ruling class, the
auxiliary or warrior class and the producer class of merchants and artisans. Each class corresponds
with a virtue and depending on a person s virtue is where a person will end up. The virtues are wisdom
for the ruling, courage for the warriors and moderation for the working class. In addition, that we need

Allusions In The Sandman
Often nowadays characters of well known stories are at times more well known than the stories they
inhabit thanks to pop culture where people recognize faces, but not their origins. The Sandman, a
comic published by DC Comics, has taken various comic and Biblical references and incorporated
them into its own universe. These allusions to other works helps the reader easily identify characters
and their roles in the story, especially if they have a wide enough literature background. Some simply
reveal something about the universe they inhabit. Understanding this makes the book much more
satisfying to read and appreciate the thought put into the book. In The Sandman the main character,
The King of Dream, becomes trapped for 70 years and loses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Cain and Abel are an allusion to the story of the first murder in the Bible, and Lucifer is the Lord of
Hell (or in the story a triumvirate with Beelzebub and Azazel). Cain and Abel s first appearance
involves the two arguing about a present and finding Dream at the doorstep (Gaiman, Imperfect Hosts
). Lucifer is introduced when Dream ventures into hell to retrieve his mask from a demon that traded it
(Gaiman, A Hope in Hell ). Throughout their interactions, the reader can learn a lot about the universe
that they inhabit. Abel lights a room with fire on his fingertips and there are floating islands (Gaiman,
Imperfect Hosts ). Hell is a physical place, so one can conclude that magic is real, and there are
multiple realms or worlds that the supernatural beings inhabit (Gaiman, A Hope in Hell ). Any reader
that had read any book that relates to magic such as The Dresden Files, a book series about a wizard
detective, can understand the concept that magic and Hell has laws or rules to follow, which
Choronzon even mentions when Dream challenges him for his helmet (Gaiman, A Hope in Hell ).
Having a background in Biblical or fantasy readings reinforces these facts and helps the reader better

The climax of the play happens when Torvald does read the first letter Krogstad sent Nora questions
(possibly for the first time), and Torvald s reaction is inappropriate. He treats her with no respect, calls
her a liar and is ready to throw their whole marriage away just because his name might be hurt. He
refuses to help her in any way, which shows that their marriage really didn t mean anything much.
What a horrible awakening! All these eight years she who was my joy and pride a hypocrite, a liar
worse, worse a criminal! The unutterable ugliness of it all! For shame! For shame! (35). When the
second letter came and he found out that his name was saved, he acts as nothing just happened
between the two of them and everything was back to normal. Try and calm yourself and make your
mind easy again, my frightened little singing bird. Be at rest and feel secure; I have broad wings to
shelter you under. How warm and cosy our home is, Nora. Here is shelter for you... Tomorrow
morning you will look upon it all quite differently; soon everything will be just as it was before (42).
Nora realizes that here is a problem still. By waiting until after he discovers that his social status will
suffer no harm, Torvald reveals his true feelings, which put appearance, both social and physical,
ahead of the wife whom he says he loves. Torvald tries to rekindle Nora s slave sprit in an effort to
validate him and to reestablish his dominance over his environment

A Journey Of A Month Without Chocolate Essay
Introduction I would like to take you on a journey of a month without chocolate. This may sound
trivial, but it was more impactful than I could have imagined. We will cross several intersections along
the way. Join me as I tell of my experience, including symptoms of withdrawal, cravings, and
temptations. At the crossroads of Expectancies, we will discuss why I chose to abstain from chocolate,
what supports I relied on, and what I expected them to provide. I will share what motivated me to
change, and my expectation of success or failure. Finally, I will tell you about anything that I
anticipated would impede my success. Once we cross over Expectancies we will travel down the road
to Reflections where we will look back on my experience, highlighting my struggles, successes,
insights, and setbacks. I will share with you how I believed my own biological programming
influenced me, what psychological effects I experienced, and the impact the world around me had on
my journey. We will then proceed to the intersection of Education where I will tell you what I learned
about myself, relapse, relapse prevention, behavior and how my attitude changed. I will share with
you how my motivation changed over the abstinence period. I will identify triggers and what I decide
I would do to handle them in the future. As we come to the end of our journey I will explore what I
have learned about addiction, addicts, and treatment, and how I chose to approach abstinence in the

Solution Focused Therapy Essay example
Solution Focused Therapy Solution focused therapy is a model of therapy developed by Steve de
Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg in the late 1970 s (Dolan, n.d.). This model has become well known for its
non traditional approach to client problems as it does not explore clients issues in relation to their
cause and affect but rather the goals and solutions to achieving a future free of any present issues. i
will be discussing the evident concepts, principles and intervention techniques of this particular
model. it will be explored in the context of a case scenario of a therapy session to observe how the
model can be actively applied to therapy sessions and why this is the best model to meet the client s

Thus, it is evident that solution focused therapy is focused on the future wellbeing and hopes of the
client rather than their past or present situation. The counsellor client work alliance (Burwell Chen,
2006) is essential for a productive and active client as it ensures motivation and empowerment through
the collaborative identification of strengths, progress and development in relation to achieving their
preferred future and to identify strengths to accomplish this outcome, also known as co constructing
solutions (O Connelle 2005) There are a number of techniques and core concepts utilised to establish
the desired future of the client, such as the miracle question, scaling question and an exception
question. These techniques are used to encourage new patterns of thinking and establishing solutions
to construct the preferred future of the client (AIPC, 2010). The miracle question aims to encourage
clients to visualise how their life would be and feel once change is made to solve the current problem
and no longer negatively impacts upon their lives. This is achieved through asking a question that
allows clients to fantasise about a life free of the problem. The miracle question used is imagine you
went to bed tonight and woke up free of the problems that you currently have

Why Is The Rights Of The Accused Is Proven Accused

History of the Rights of the Accused and the Warren Court
One of the most well known epithets in the United States is innocent until proven guilty. This means
that until a prosecution has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that a person accused of a crime has
indeed committed that crime, he or she is to be presumed innocent of all charges. In theory, this idea
upholds the sense of democracy and fair trial upon which the country was founded. In practice,
however, it is less so. Oftentimes, an accusation or a criminal charge defines the person accused, as he
or she is already presumed guilty in the court of public opinion. Especially in the cases of high profile
trials, most people accept that the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Constitution clearly outlines the rights of the accused and what steps must be taken before an
accused person can be punished. One of these rights is The Writ of Habeas Corpus, which means that
a person cannot be held or detained for an unreasonable amount of time without having been charged
with a crime. This prevents the government and law officials from imprisoning citizens without cause.
Today, a large number of criminal conviction appeals are raised under the habeas corpus privilege,
[wherein] individuals ... convicted of crimes ... may demand that the government justify his or her
physical confinement (ThisNation). In other words, even if a person has been convicted of a crime, if
it is found that his or her right to habeas corpus has been violated, it can nullify the conviction.
Another right that is guaranteed to the accused is the right to a trial by jury. Article III of the
Constitution guarantees that those who are accused of crimes have the right to have their guilt or
innocence determined by a panel of fellow citizens (ThisNation). A person cannot be convicted of a
crime without receiving a fair trial, during which the prosecution must present its proof that the
accused is guilty. If there is not enough proof to determine that the accused person did commit the
crime, then the jury cannot convict, and the accused is free to go. There are some exceptions to the
trial by jury right, such as if a person is accused of a crime that has a penalty of

Animals Should Not Be Treated
Animals forced to live in farm factories being used to produce food are mistreated on the daily basis.
Forced to eat foods that are harmful for them, they are also forced to live in tight housing conductions
where they are sometimes unable to stand or move around forced to be in one spot which cause them
to have sours under there bodies from not moving. These animals keeps under this conditions live
under a lot of street from seeing there young being taken away from them or maybe how some
chicken farmers don t allow there animals to see sunlight which put stress on the animals. Humans do
these things to animals because they only think of the benefit for them but most people don t see the
harm that is done to these animals and also the harm that is done to the environment. Do these things
to these animals is not right and we as humans don t have the right to treat another living thing this
way all living things should be treated with respect regardless of what it maybe, I know that all living
things can be treated like humans but we should at least insure that all living things pain and stress
should be kept to a minimum and should be eased when it can whenever possible. The waste that is
produced in farm factories by the animals is harmful to the environment. In the United States alone
farm animals generate more than 1 million tons of manure per day, three times the amount generated
by the country human population. All the waste that is produced by these factory farms

Descriptive Essay On A Old Dog
Our previous dog had just died and we had to put him asleep because he was really old and sick. He
had cancer in many spots in his body, he had a massive tumor, and he felt all around miserable. After
his sad death within a few months we decided to get a new dog. My dad wanted a hunting dog so that
narrowed our options of what type of dog that we could get. The dogs we wanted the most were an
Irish setter, English setter, or a German shorthaired pointer which was the type of dog that had just
died. All the English setters either costed way to much or were on the opposite side of the country.
Some of them were even in different countries. All the Irish setter puppy s were too far away or to
much except one breeder had them in Missouri which wasn t to far but we wanted to see if we could
find anything else especially because there were a lot of pointers that were in our price range.
There was one pointer that we wanted a lot so we decided to meet him at a field with the previous
owner. His name was Willy and he was a pointer that we found on a rescue sight. He was about a year
old and he was already being trained to hunt. After we met him we thought about getting him in about
a week.
It was Saturday and we were going to pick up the new dog the next day. We got a phone call from the
person who was giving him a temporary house. Once my dad got off the phone he said, I just got off
the phone with the temporary owner and she said she took Willy to work and

The Wicked Witch and Snow White Essay
The Wicked Witch and Snow White
Edith Wharton presents two memorable characters in her novel, Ethan Frome. The reader is presented
with Mattie Silver who is young, and good natured, and Zeena Frome, who is a bitter hypochondriac
seven years her husband s senior. Upon a first inspection, Zeena Frome and Mattie Silver of Edith
Wharton s Ethan Frome seem to be extreme opposites in every respect, but upon closer scrutiny, one
finds though they are indeed different in character, though they eventually share great similarities.
Zeena and Mattie s differences in appearance and character, but similarity of fate, all contribute to the
theme of the novel which is that one cannot escape the social class one is born in.

Within the first five chapters, Edith Wharton establishes the stark physical differences between young,
gay Mattie Silver and unattractive, gloomy Zeena Frome.
Mattie and Zeena differ in character as much as they differ in appearance. A great hobby of Zenna s
was to find faults with others, though her fault finding was of the silent kind, but not the less
penetrating for that. Zeena also had an obstinate silence that frightened Mattie as well as her husband.
Ethan s wife was also a great cause of irritation for him: When she spoke, it was only to complain, and
to complain of things not in his power to remedy. Of late... her silence had begun to trouble him... and
wondered if Zeena was turning queer. At other times her silence seemed deliberately assumed to
conceal far reaching intentions, mysterious conclusions drawn from suspicions and resentments
impossible to guess. Zeen was a woman turned bitter by too much strife and too little reward. The
location of the farm isolated her from her neighbors, so she rarely could socialize with others. Having
nothing better to do, Zeena gives her own health fanatical attention. She is occupied constantly with
new pills, stomach powders and books on diseases of the liver. Mattie Silver, however, was still young
and full of hope and joy. Her small lot of suffering had just enough to give her a sense of appreciation

The ultra dense remnants of the imploding core which are lefts behinds are known as a neutron star, as

inside a newly formed neutron star is from around 1011 to 1012 kelvin. However, the huge number of
neutrinos it emits carry away so much energy that the temperature of an isolated neutron star falls
within a few years to around 106 kelvin. Then we have the average star , The average star or

An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio Essay
An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson s Winesburg, Ohio
Under the guise of simplicity, Sherwood Anderson weaves an intricate tale of man s struggle for
understanding and love in Winesburg, Ohio. Against a backdrop rich with symbolism, he examines
man s truths crumbling behind the walls he has built.
Anderson employs a strong use of symbolism in Adventure. Waiting in vain for a self made fantasy to
realize, Alice Hindman sacrifices a meaningful life within society. Alice s outward existence appears
to run steadily downhill into dull meaninglessness, her inward life climbs with increasing intensity
toward a climax of desperation and hysteria (Joselyn 450). The intensity, a passionate restlessness,
forces Alice to realize that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Twisted apples, rejected by the pickers, are like the misunderstood misfits rejected by society;
underneath they are just as wonderful and yet only a few know the sweetness of the twisted apples
(Anderson 36). Paper pills, the unspoken ideas of Doctor Reefy, are doses of medicine he cannot
prescribe. Another object, money symbolizes the means for freedom or control. Elizabeth Willard s
father, on his death bed, gives her eight hundred dollars. Hoping she will take it and go away he pleads
with her to keep silent about the money (Anderson 225). Ironically, the very symbol of freedom
remains hidden behind a wall, although she struggles in silence to reveal its location and purpose. In
Drink, Tom Foster s grandmother finds money and purchases tickets to escape a city filled with
ugliness and crime and lust (Anderson 215). Arriving in Winesburg, a bustling town different from the
small village of her childhood, she wonders if she has made a mistake. Money did not provide the
freedom she sought. Money played an important part in Doctor Parcival s relationship with his
brother. His brother controlled the family with his money and the bitterness remained with the doctor
throughout his life. Jesse Bentley hungered for what money represented: control, a means for
mastering the souls of his people (Anderson 67). The comparison between the Willard Hotel and the
owner, Tom, is another example of Anderson s use of symbolism. The building is aging, the wallpaper
fading.

Essay On Concussions In Sports
The effects of too many concussions and other injuries sustained during contact sports can carry on for
the rest of your life if the case is severe enough. Most of the time, however, concussions are very
minor and only require a short time period of rest. If enough concussions do occur during an athlete s
life, say the amount a professional football player or hockey player might have endured, chronic
traumatic encephalopathy could take place. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy occurs when an athlete
endures repeated blows to the head that resulted in concussions or a secondary blow to the head while

Sports are not for everybody, not only because of talent level, but because a certain mindset is to be
had to be successful at any sport. A commitment is made. Forty hours of practice a week, the average
amount of time spent practicing for football players, all for a one hour game, the average time of one
game of college football, takes dedication. That is not even counting the time spent icing, resting, and
studying the playbook or film, not to mention the school work to be kept up with for college and high
school students. Most athletes have become used to the grind and juggling three or four time
consuming activities all at one time while being successful at each. Waking up at the break of dawn,
following a schedule, and suffering consequences when a bad choice is made creates character and
discipline that is often needed for many little league, high school, and college athletes. The most
important non tangible thing sports teach anyone is how to get back up after falling, how to get
knocked down but get right back up and keep going, how to move on from failure and overcome it,
focusing on the next important part of life. These skills of determination and courage taught through
sports are essential for being successful in any part of life and are hard to come by anywhere

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Drop Shipping
Drop shipping is a retail satisfaction strategy where a store doesn t keep the items it offers in stock.
Rather, when a store offers an item, it buys the thing from an outsider and has it transported
straightforwardly to the client. Thus, the dealer never sees or handles the item.
The greatest contrast in the middle of drop shipping and the standard retail model is that the offering
dealer doesn t stock or own stock. Rather, the vendor buys stock as required from an outsider typically
a wholesaler or producer to satisfy orders.
This one of a kind model has various advantages and downsides:

Tupac Shakur s Conspiracy Theory
Contrary to official explanations of key events are conspiracy theories, alternate explanations that
point out coordination and intent by figures and/or powers outside of the accepted knowledge. People
love a narrative that comes with a conspiracy theory, it s the reason why a theory never vanishes. One
theory that never vanished was that the death of Tupac Amaru Shakur. Reasons behind conspiracy
theories are to basically keep the conversation going. Conspiracy theories give people an out to
believe something else must have occurred instead of what has been told through the media. People

The Black Panthers were an organization during the late 1960 s to fight for African American rights.
Tupac grew up in an infrastructure where he had to struggle and battle for his rights growing up during
the decades of the seventies and eighties because of the color of his skin. With tension and anger
building inside of him, he used poetry to express his frustrations and immediately found his outlet. His
outspoken charisma brought him attention from millions of people relating to the similar situation
Tupac was going through, and eventually he used his poetry and pursue a career in Hip Hop. Topics
that he explained included using guns, drugs, committing crimes, having multiple affairs, and
threatening the lives of people, specifically against law enforcement and his old best friend
Christopher Wallace, The Notorious B.I.G. Wallace is often suspected of being the mastermind behind
the conspiracy, because of his ongoing war with Tupac. They were both best friends, as Tupac initially
took Wallace under his wing by teaching him how to record his music lyrically and developing his
approach to hip hop. Both Tupac and Christopher Wallace spent a lot of time together before their
fallout because of reports of an affair between Tupac and Wallace s wife, Faith Evans. This rumor was
confirmed when Tupac released a song titled Hit Em Up where Tupac explicitly raps about having an
affair with Faith Evans. Theorists believe the affair gave Wallace the motive to kill Tupac for this
betrayal. However, six months later, Christopher Wallace would die similarly to how Tupac died, but
both deaths are not correlated with each

The Gilded Age By Mark Twain And Charles Warner
The Gilded Age The Gilded Age was a great time in American history when industrialization was
growing rapidly, and immigration to our country increased dramatically. Mark Twain and Charles
Warner named this time of industrial prosperity the Gilded Age because the wealth of the fortunate
masked the problems that the society faced. New inventions and corporations led to industrialization
and immigration growing in our nation. Industrialization led to the creating of mass culture, which
allowed people to have more leisure time. However, all of the great wealth that industrialization
brought to the U.S. hid the fact that African Americans faced segregation, and nonwhites were
discriminated against during this time in history. The Gilded Age lasted from 1865 to 1914, a short
time in U.S. history, but it had a major impact in the advancement of our country! The Industrial
Revolution began spreading to America in the early to mid 1800s and industries began to develop,
which changed the path of our country forever. William Kelly and Henry Bessemer created the
Bessemer steel process in the 1850s and it cut the price of steel dramatically. John D. Rockefeller
became a captain of industry in the oil industry with his Standard Oil Trust corporation that became a
monopoly. Rockefeller was considered a robber baron because he used dishonest methods to become
rich. Andrew Carnegie was a captain of industry in the steel industry. Carnegie tried to make his

Prostitution And Prostitution
Within the research surrounding sex trafficking and its relation to prostitution, an important question
is: do different laws and policies on prostitution have a noticeable effect on human trafficking? Which
is more likely to decrease sex trafficking: decriminalization of prostitution or strict enforcement of anti
prostitution laws? The literature suggests that decriminalizing prostitution may lead to better working
conditions for a minority of workers, however legalization can lead to higher rates of sex trafficking.
Along with this, other identity factors such as age and immigration status limit any positive impact
legalizing prostitution may have on reducing sex trafficking. The research highlights the different
ways in which women enter into the field of prostitution. In relation to sex trafficking, not all women
who are sex trafficked are simply kidnapped and directly forced into prostitution. According to
Leuchtag, a scholar and social worker in this field of study, many women are coerced into sex slavery
through different means of manipulation. Often, distributors of sex slaves will claim there is a work
opportunity in a nearby region doing manual labor, such as working on a farm. Though the context
may seem risky, women who are in great economic distress will often take such ambiguously titled
jobs in order to send money to their families. These women only find out after they have accepted the
job offer the reality of their situation. Other women are kidnapped and

Essay On Relationship Between Lord Of The Flies And The...
The politician Muhammad Ali Jinnah once said, Think 100 times before you take a decision, but once
that decision is taken, stand by it as one man. In the novels Lord of the Flies, written by William
Golding, and The Odyssey, written by Homer, this message is conveyed throughout. Furthermore, in
Lord of the Flies the main character Ralph finds himself on an unfamiliar island and later finds other
people. The story is characterized by the conflict between human natures; for example, savagery
amongst the children and the hope for rescue. During the course of the book, Ralph is plagued with
difficult decisions. Likewise, The Odyssey is about the journeys of a man named Odysseus who has to
make numerous tough decisions on his voyage back home. In correlation to the eloquent dialogue of
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, when making decisions, one must be thoughtful before undergoing the task.
First, when making decisions, one must always acknowledge his opponents. One should especially
consider the enemy s strengths and weaknesses. For example, after contemplating the skills of the
Cyclops in the cave, Odysseus drew on all [his] wits, and ran through tactics... until a trick came and it
pleased [him] well (Fitzgerald 381). Odysseus realizes that the Cyclops would defeat him in any
physical confrontation due to his well developed brute strength; as a result, he plans to trick him
because he knows that he is intellectually superior to the Cyclops. Through his review of the Cyclops

Homelessness And The Homeless Youth
Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. An incredibly vulnerable group is the homeless
youth due to their young age and lack of education. According to Edidin, Ganim, Hunter, Karnik
(2012) on any particular night in the United States there are ~2 million homeless youth living on the
streets, in shelters, or in other temporary accommodation. Youth become homeless for multiple
reasons whether it be because they have aged out of foster care, ran from home, were kicked out of
their home, or because they have become homeless along with their family members. Within the
umbrella categorization of homeless youth there are high at risk subgroups, common misconceptions,
and a serious concern of lack of support and medical services. Homeless youth face an abundance of
challenges, especially if they are on their own, such as finding food, shelter, income, and potential
medical expenses. Some youth experience additional hardship by facing the effects of abuse they
endured at their previous place of residence. According to the National Conference of State
Legislators (2013) 46 percent of runaway and homeless youth reported physical abuse, 38 percent
reported emotional abuse, and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a
family or household member. Therefore, the chances of emotional vulnerability are high. A common
misconception of homeless youth is that even if they do become homeless they are not homeless for
long. The National Alliance to End

Core Concepts from TA and Gestalt
The paradox is that, while a concern with past and future is obviously central to psychological
functioning, to behave as though one were indeed in the past or future, as many do, pollutes the lively
possibilities of existence. ― Erving Polster, Gestalt Therapy Integrated: Contours of Theory Practice.
Accomodation to parental needs often (but not always) leads to an as if personality. This person
develops in such a way that he reveals only what is expected of him and fuses so completely with
what he reveals that one could scarcely guess how much more there is to him behind the false self .
Miller, A (1997) The Drama of Being a Child, Virago, London.
Inrojections and Polarities are similar to Life Scripts and Injuctions in TA theory. Introjects are often
codes swallowed whole that may have come from our family or society. For example, after twenty
three personal therapy sessions, I had to challenge myself to explore in body work what parts of
myself I would like to be deleted. I wanted to delete my emotional fragility. I started breathing,
voicing and gestering happy sounds and words. I then drew an image of a dark cloud with white words
Let Go . The relief of my image contained all my pain of my emotional fragitlity. Energy taken up in
reserving fighting mechanisms against the pain of blocked care. When we are in full contact change is
inevitable. (Ervin Polster, Gestalt, Therapy Integrated)

Practices and Malpractice in Canadian Food Labelling
Canada s food labelling practices are very much a work in progress. Labelling itself is a very
important issue as it affects both product sales for companies and personal health for consumers,
especially since most Canadian consumers learn about nutrition from food labels themselves (Nguyen)
and are especially inclined to trust labels (Gruère, Carter and Farzin). Through labelling law,
government is also able to impose food standards on products. An extensive set of rules to govern
every possible category of food product is used and adhered to in the food inspection process. Food
labelling itself is mainly tied to issues of health and safety and consumer rights, but has also recently
been involved in trade relations (which will not be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New guidelines have eliminated this practice. However, companies choose to label products Made in
Canada from Domestic and Imported Ingredients instead of labelling all the country origins of their
ingredients. An example is in the meat industry. Foreign animals imported into Canada but slaughtered
and/or processed here still qualify for Made in Canada labels, in fact, only pre processed and packaged
imported meat requires a country of origin label (Weeks).
This is admittedly the most practical option for processed food products comprising many ingredients,
but can also be taken as an attempt to hide the true origin of ingredients from the consumer to prevent
any bias in selection. Companies stand to lose sales if they reveal all the sources of their ingredients
for several reasons. Consumers may have patriotic sympathies and prefer domestic goods. They may
also have a bias towards certain countries, perhaps for political or environmental reasons (e.g. whether
the food was produced sustainably) (Boyd), and may even doubt the quality of ingredients coming
from lesser developed countries.
There is additional confusion (for consumers) in the difference between Made in Canada and Product
of Canada labels. Consumers tend to equate the two, but they are in fact very different. Products that

How Chinese Policies Helped Strengthen Or Weaken Uyghur...
Introduction Out of the fifty five recognized ethnic minorities within China, Uyghur is the 5th largest
population out of the 8.3 million. Uyghur independence movements started in 1933, their primary aim
was to create a sovereign state called East Turkestan within the region currently known as Xinjiang
Uyghur Autonomous Region of China (XUAR). This thesis seeks to answer the question of how the
Chinese government s policies towards the Uyghur s, a Turkish Muslim group living predominately in
the North Western Chinese province Xinjiang, have influenced the political strengthening of the
Uyghur s. The aspect of this question will be explored: Have the Chinese policies helped to strengthen
or weaken Uyghur identity? Additionally, the hypothesis for the research question is that the Chinese
policies have not favored nor shaped the Uyghur s interest.
Chinese Government s Policies The Chinese government s policies toward the Uyghur s in Xinjiang is
broken down into two broad categories. The first category consists of policies that are focused on the
assimilation and social and economic development of Uyghur s. These policies include regulations on
minorities languages, and affirmative action policies in education. The second category is made up of
what is called hard policies. This hard approach includes restrictions on civil liberties such as freedom
of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press. Beginning in the early

Traditionalism In The Mayor Of Casterbridge By Thomas Hardy
In his foremost literary work, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy uses the very inspiration of
Casterbridge s traditions and setting itself paired with its foremost characters, Michael Henchard and
Donald Fafrae, to opine that traditionalism in any sense is an outdated and even self destructive
culture; for this reason, it is the duty of the younger generation to resurrect traditionalistic societies
from collapsing.
Hardy constructs the fictional town of Casterbridge by drawing inspiration from his own hometown,
Dorchester, order to convey that standard, traditionalistic societies such as it are lamentable and ever
collapsing. Dorchester s many prominent and unlovable features, as in many of Hardy s novels, in
fact, are portrayed through direct parallels in Casterbridge s key features and traditions. The skimmity
ride organized by Joshua Jopp exposing Lucetta and her shameful history, for example, is a landmark
of the society that Hardy created and had lived in. Skimmity rides were actually well known
traditionalistic English events; they were carried out in order to express public disdain of sinful marital
actions. Seeing that Hardy claims that he has derived Casterbridge from his memories of Dorchester
as a child, it is likely that Hardy has witnessed something like this before. Such an embarrassment
itself is not something that would ever be considered morally acceptable in an even remotely modern
society, especially considering that, seeing the laughter and

Similarities Between Metropolis And Dystopiar Cities

how historical contexts can influence the political and social values of the time, exploring the extent of
the potential for exploitation of power. Fritz Lang s German expressionist film, Metropolis (1927) and
George Orwell s satirical novel Nineteen Eighty Four (1949) dramatise the impact of oppressive

This expresses the reality of post World War I as the film s introductory sequence draws upon German
Expressionist elements presenting a low angle of towering skyscrapers in Bauhaus design and abstract
machinery. This artistic vivid and opulent setting contrasts with extreme close up of machines
suggesting the collective power of movement parallel to the workers, as they operate machinery
beneath the city in synchronicity. This disparity creates a defined hierarchical structure that juxtaposes
the heightened sense of power experienced by the ruling elite with the worker s sense of loss of
identity in the face of technological expansion. This extreme dichotomy exposes the innate fear of
abuse of power within a capitalist framework as audiences perceived the potential of conformity to a
totalitarian corporation, leading to dehumanisation of humanity. Further explored in the creation
scene, the political perspective reveals how the over development of technology for progress,
consequently results in abuse of power. This is developed as the machine man is displayed in a low
angle shot underneath upside down pentagram, the religious motif symbolic of how Rotwang proves
to be usurping the powers of god, emphasising that through the abuse of power, technology has the
ability to create a loss of identity leading to dehumanisation. Through the technological expansion
made apparent through Lang s dystopic world the potential of the exploitation of power is

The Qin Shi Huangdi Qin Essay
Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin emperor, was a proactive and ambitious emperor who implemented a
central bureaucratic system that oversaw the evolution and unification of China at the cost of public
sentiment. The Qin Dynasty is considered among the most influential dynasties as it laid the
foundation for the massive cultural and economic development of China that took place during the
Han Dynasty, but it also failed to achieve many of its pro commoner ideological goals. In fact,
socioeconomic disparity was not alleviated and despite the notion of enriching the lives of the
common people, it was under Qin rule in which public resentment of the authoritarian government
peaked as there were countless peasant revolts against the iron handed bureaucratic rule of China.
Because a paranoid emperor alone wielded political clout and influence, the tumultuous few years of
Qin reign was rife with paranoia and suspicion among the masses. Although the Qin Dynasty is
seldom thought as possessing the same glaring discrepancy between ideology and state that the
Communist regime in post World War II China had despite the similarities, the failure of the flawless
egalitarian state models in socioeconomic and political aspects during the Qin Dynasty mirrored the
developments in early Communist China. Among the key aspects of the Qin unification was the act of
completely clearing all local aristocracies and uniting the peasant class into a single, mobilized
workforce. Ideally, the Qin

How Is Culture Influenced By American Culture
Cultures have been copying each other since the first groups of people roamed the earth. When people
see something they like, many will copy the idea to make their own lives more enjoyable or more

Authors such as Andrew Marantz, Steve Olson, Leslie Savan, Manuel Munoz, Steve Olson, Kwame

They believe that through media, cultures are blending appearances, traditions, jobs, and social

Culturalization has made huge steps forward and will continue to make changes until the world is
unified under the belief of cosmopolitanism. The definition of cosmopolitanism is that all human
beings belong together in a single community (Dictionary). Kwame Anthony Appiah writes in his
article Cosmopolitanism about how every human being who has ever been on the earth is essentially
the same. He shares how everyone is the same at birth, but taught to have different beliefs (Appiah
68). Meaning that everyone was created the same and should be able to get along no matter what
cultural beliefs people might obtain. Supporting this argument is the author of Small Change ,
Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell describes an incident that took place on February 1, 1960, when the
famous Greensboro sit ins occurred. Social standards during this time were to be segregated but that
all began to change after these and many other sit ins. Word spread through the media about the events
and by the end thousands of people were involved which sparked the Civil Rights movement

Police Professionalization Movement Case Study
1) What was the police professionalization movement? How was this progressive? How was it not?
William Parker the LAPD police chief of the 1950 s created the police professionalization movement
in order to raise the statues of how police officer are portrayed, and at the same time gain self
governing for police departments (Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.175 176). The main focus of police
professionalism was that law enforcement should not have any interference from any other
government institution or the community when creating policies for themselves or when dealing with
an officer who breaks those policies, in all it emphasized autonomy where all decisions were made
from within the police (Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.175 176).
Although police professionalism had many flaws for the time it was a progressive movement for
several reasons. For one, police professionalism intended to move law enforcement into the future and
change how police officers were viewed to a more positive light, but it failed in this aspect (Escobar,
E. J., 2003, pg.176). Second, it was mean to reform the police in order to rid it od corrupt officers who
took bribery from illegal institutions, and who extorted money from the community ... Show more

Police autonomy brought with it new ideals, such as the war on crime , which was used to target
specific groups of people, such as Mexican American (Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.177, 178 179). The war
on crime also brought with it the idea that certain groups of people are more inclined genetically to
engage in criminal activities, one of this groups that was labeled as such was Mexican American
(Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.177). As the author quotes in the article police professionalism lead to a us

and distrust from both sides (Escobar, E. J., 2003,

Tikki-Tavi
What is theme? The theme in a fictional story is what the author wants the reader to learn and apply to
their everyday lives. In the story Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, I know the theme is bad things
will happen to people if they do bad things to other people. In the beginning, when Nag and Nagaina
ate Darzee s egg, Rikki came back to haunt Nagaina by killing her eggs. Plus, when he killed Nag in
the bathroom, that was for killing Darzee s egg and gloating about it. People might think the theme is
too much ambition leads to negative results, but it s not, so keep looking buddy. The theme is
basically, what comes around, goes around. Within this story the superb characters are showered in
positive results. The first positive result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the antagonist wants Rikki s family to die so she could raise her family in the melon
patch without humans. She wanted to have her babies live in peace, but Rikki killed all of her babies,
Nag, and her. Nag died going into the bathroom to kill Rikki s family. This did not work out well for
her because she lost her husband in the process. At the same time Rikki was ambitious too, he wanted
his family to be proud of him and he wanted the snakes to be gone. When Rikki killed Nag, Nagaina,
their babies, and Karait he achieved what he wanted to do, and his family was proud of him. I hope
you realize, this is not a theme Rudyard Kipling wanted you to take away from this story. In
conclusion, we discovered Mr. Kipling clearly wanted us to realize what comes around goes around.
This is why the evil characters failed in this story. They failed because they were mean to anyone who
came into the melon bed. Also, Nag and Nagaina ate Darzee s egg; their eggs were destroyed by
Rikki. Plus, they tried to kill the humans, eventually Nag and Nagaina were killed by Rikki. Finally, I
hope you understand the theme is bad things will happen to people if they do bad things to other

Bainbridge stood for what he believe in and follow his own principles. I can relate to the Bainbridge
because, there was a time I was treated different because I had different believe in something. I
believe that being completely honest and do not lie is something that people should do. So I was told
the truth if it was the good or if it was bad and people started to hate that I could keep my mouth shut
about thing and lesser people started to hang around me. Bainbridge was influenced by the author
Rodney Stark. Stark worked with Bainbridge on the Stark Bainbridge theory of religion. They wrote
The Future of Religion (1985) and A Theory of Religion (1987). They both had the same theory that

Heraclitus Ethos Pathos And Logos
Seetha Aribindi
Heraclitus was one of the natural philosophers from Ephesus in Asia Minor, circa 540 480 B.C. , who
believed that constant change or flow was the basic characteristic of nature. He believed the world was
characterized by opposites and it would cease to exist without their constant interplay. God is day and
night, winter and summer, war and peace, hunger and satiety, he said, believing God can be seen most
clearly in constant transformations and contrasts in nature. (p 28) But instead of God he used the greek
word logos which means reason, as he believed that there must be a kind of universal reason or
universal law guiding everybody and everything that happens in nature. Thus amid constant flux and
opposites throughout nature, Heraclitus believed an Entity or one ness , called God or logos was the
source of everything. Aristotle, the last of the great Greek philosophers, circa 384 322 B.C. and the
first of Europe s great biologists , who studied at Plato s academy. He believed that everything in the
natural world can be categorized into nonliving things with no potential for change, and living ...

Benzoyl Chloride Lab Report
The chloride in benzoyl chloride would induce a partial positive charge on the carbon in the carbonyl
group. This carbon would also have a partial positive charge due to the electronegativity of the oxygen
attached to it. The partial positive charge enables the carbon to be attack by nucleophiles, such as
ammonia. When the ammonia, a neutral nucleophile, attacks the electrophilic benzoyl chloride reacts,
it will result in a tetrahedral intermediate. Intermediated will regenerate the C=O bond and cause the

First, the percent yield was 58.4%. This is not the best nor the worst percent yield there could be. The
reason why this was too low could be because some of the product at the end kept sticking onto the
equipment. This resulted in some product not being weight. Second, the melting point of 122 124
degrees C is close to the benzamide s melting point of 128 130 degrees C. This indicates that the
product was not 100% pure, due to the fact that the final melting point was lower than pure benzamide
s would be. However, it is only 6 degrees difference. This means that there was only a small amount of
impurities. Lastly, the IR spectrum. The peak at 3367.18 cm 1 represents asymmetric N H bond and
the peak at 3181.04 cm 1 represents symmetric N H bond as they are relatively close to the
documented peaks of 3350 cm 1 and 3170 cm 1.

How Is Iago A Tragic Hero
Honest Iago is maybe one of the most intriguing characters in the tragic play Othello, by William
Shakespeare. Using many skillfully planned out words and actions, Iago easily manipulates others to
do things that benefit him and lets him come closer and closer to achieving his goals. Iago is the main
cause of tragic events, leading Othello and others towards their tragic ends.
This man is far from your standard tragic villain. Iago s role in the play is rather special and unique,
and definitely not what the reader or may be expecting. Iago is a very intelligent character. He is a
very skilled judge of characters and their skillsets and will often use this to his own advantage. As an
example, Iago knows Roderigo is very much in love with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

of Cassio s watch, Iago convinces him to take another drink, knowing very well that it will make him

Line 37] Iago is able to make him defy his own reasoning to take another drink! Crafty, is this Iago.
When Roderigo follows through with the plan Iago has set on him, Cassio is made to look like an
irresponsible fool, resulting in his termination as lieutenant. After this incident, Iago sets another of his
plans in motion by telling Cassio to beg Desdemona to help his cause, saying, she holds it a vice in her
goodness not to do more than she is requested. [Act II, Scene III, Line 287] And thus, Cassio is set on
a dark path which leads to trouble and mischief. Yet, Cassio follows it blindly telling Iago, You advise
me well. [Act II, Scene III, Line 292] With this, Cassio is eventually led into a trap where Roderigo
maims him, and all that time, Iago his friend is behind it

Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Lab Report
AGAROSE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS
I. INTRODUCTION
Agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) is the most common and effective way of separating and analyzing
DNA fragments of different sizes (Lee Costumbrado, 2012). The agarose gel, at the time that it is
completely polymerized, acts as a molecular sieve that, in the existence of electric current, pull apart
DNA by their molecular weight and size. AGE is not mostly used to visualize DNA but also used for
quantification or to single out a particular band. The DNA is visualized in the gel by staining with of
ethidium bromide (EtBr). EtBr ties strongly to DNA by interpolate between the bases and its
fluorescent meaning that it absorbs invisible UV light and transfers the energy as visible orange light

Each restriction enzyme cuts DNA at a identified base sequence. This produces thousands of
restriction fragments of all different sizes because the base sequences being cut could be far from each
other (long fragment) or close together (short fragment). Gel electrophoresis process is used to detach
these fragments on the basis of their sizes. DNA fragments are injected into wells and an electric
current is applied along the gel. DNA is negatively charged so it is attracted to the positive end of the
gel. The shorter DNA fragments move faster than the longer fragments. DNA is separated on basis of
size. A radioactive material is joined which combines with the DNA fragments to yield a fluorescent
image. A photographic copy of the DNA bands is acquired. The pattern of fragment distribution is
then examined and

In Today’S World The Internet Is One Of The Most Important
In today s world the Internet is one of the most important media, it serves nearly 3,630,000,000 users
worldwide (46.1% of the population) and the rate of growth is 380.3% over the last 9 years. The role
of the World Wide Web is observable not only in statistics, but also more visibly in everyday life: in
social interactions, business, science and education, entertainment, communication, and even
language. For many it is a place where they can interact with others or browse content anonymously.
Many examples have shown that this is often a very inexperienced attitude, and that what happens to
our online data may be very different to what we think happens to it.

Although there are many well defined laws and precedents for how to handle invading a persons
private life, the laws for monitoring private digital life are much more gray. While intercepting and
reading a piece of posted mail is a tedious and hard to disguise task, it is a simple and easy to read
electronic mail, and it is almost undetectable as well. Great care has to be taken to ensure the safety of
citizens, while still maintaining their privacy.
History and Development of Internet Privacy
What is the perception of privacy and anonymity online relies greatly on understanding the history and
development of the issue. From 1967, when the Internet was born, until the mid 1990s, privacy was a
non issue. There was no advertising, no security measures apart from log ins, no spam and, until 1989,
no graphic interfaces, no icons, images, windows, etc.
One of the first cases of a website interfering with its users personal information is the infamous
Prodigy.net. This portal, very popular in the late 1980 s and early 1990 s, was one of the pioneers of
sites like AOL or Microsoft Online, a multi‐purpose provider of news, entertainment etc. Prodigy
required the installation of special software for access to the content of the website, followed by
personal information (name, sex, address etc.), and a credit card number. What the users did not

  • 2. Rhetorical Devices In Waiting For Superman Director, Davis Guggenheim, in the film Waiting for Superman, tells the untold stories of five children waiting for their opportunity to go to a better school. Guggenheim s purpose is to convey the idea that some schools are waiting for their superman to come save the day. In Waiting for Superman, Davis Guggenheim uses a variety of rhetorical devices to show how the education system is corrupt and what is being done to fix this system. Guggenheim appeals to the viewer s emotions by providing many heartbreaking stories from the five children being interviewed. There is nothing more pitiful than puppy being kicked or a toy being taken away from a baby. The director uses the element of sympathy to create an attachment between the audience and the children. In the interview, Bianca is a six year old girl who has been anticipating her 1st grade graduation since the first day of school. Unfortunately, she will not be unable to attend her own graduation. Bianca has a single mom unable to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What makes Waiting for Superman such a well rounded documentary is the reliable sources Guggenheim pulls from. Also interviewed in the documentary was Michelle Rhee, head of school district in Washington D.C. She has been trying to make teachers more accountable and remove tenure, the inability to fire teachers without a just cause . Both these leaders have been working in the education department for a long time and are advocates for education reform. • 3. The Reflection Of The Human Eye Work How does the human eye work? The cornea is clear and at the front of the eye. When light rays enter it, the cornea refracts it through the pupil and then the iris. The iris controls how much light may pass through the pupil by expanding or shrinking. Next, the light ray will enter the lens. This also refracts light by changing its shape with the help of the ciliary muscles and the suspensory ligaments. The light will go through a dense jelly like tissue named the vitreous humour and eventually focused at the back of the eye onto the retina. The retina is a light sensitive tissue and covered with rods and cones. These receptors will capture the light ray and transform it into electrical impulses. They get sent off through the nerve fibres, then the optic nerve, and then finally the brain. The picture given by the retina is upside down so our brain will next turn it the right way up. Our bodies have the capability to endure large scars but, a slight scar on the cornea can lead up to our vision becoming impaired. The retina will process the light rays, into light impulses that need to be transferred to the brain to create an image, which are focused on to them by the cornea. So, any deep injures experienced by the cornea can lead to corneal scarring which would affect our vision. Focusing on near and distant objects People that have trouble focusing in near or a distant object is due the light rays entering their eyes are unable to focus on the retina. This is a very common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The City And Parts Of The Soul Another premise is how justice is a craft with a particular function. All conventional items that human beings use have a purpose otherwise its useless. Even the most ridiculous products sold on infomercials are designed for a specific purpose. Although products being sold on infomercials are ridiculous for being invented with a purpose in mind, but do not function well and generally make the user of the product look foolish. Like conventional items justice has a function. However it is important that a thing s function is the work that it alone can do, or can do better than anyone else (I. 353a). Basically, Plato is assuming that we, human beings are dependent on each other and working together will create a more sustainable society for all. It makes sense for every individual to specialize in a task and can trade goods or services with one another. Plato further applies this concept to his analogy of the city and parts of the soul. In the creation of a city, and for the soul to be justice it has a particular hierarchical formation. For building the ideal city, Socrates divides people into three types of classes: the ruling class, the auxiliary or warrior class and the producer class of merchants and artisans. Each class corresponds with a virtue and depending on a person s virtue is where a person will end up. The virtues are wisdom for the ruling, courage for the warriors and moderation for the working class. In addition, that we need to hone in what skills or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Allusions In The Sandman Often nowadays characters of well known stories are at times more well known than the stories they inhabit thanks to pop culture where people recognize faces, but not their origins. The Sandman, a comic published by DC Comics, has taken various comic and Biblical references and incorporated them into its own universe. These allusions to other works helps the reader easily identify characters and their roles in the story, especially if they have a wide enough literature background. Some simply reveal something about the universe they inhabit. Understanding this makes the book much more satisfying to read and appreciate the thought put into the book. Lucifer is introduced when Dream ventures into hell to retrieve his mask from a demon that traded it (Gaiman, A Hope in Hell ). Throughout their interactions, the reader can learn a lot about the universe that they inhabit. Abel lights a room with fire on his fingertips and there are floating islands (Gaiman, Imperfect Hosts ). Hell is a physical place, so one can conclude that magic is real, and there are multiple realms or worlds that the supernatural beings inhabit (Gaiman, A Hope in Hell ). Any reader that had read any book that relates to magic such as The Dresden Files, a book series about a wizard detective, can understand the concept that magic and Hell has laws or rules to follow, which Choronzon even mentions when Dream challenges him for his helmet (Gaiman, A Hope in Hell ). These techniques are used to encourage new patterns of thinking and establishing solutions to construct the preferred future of the client (AIPC, 2010). The miracle question aims to encourage clients to visualise how their life would be and feel once change is made to solve the current problem and no longer negatively impacts upon their lives. • 10. Why Is The Rights Of The Accused Is Proven Accused Name Instructor Name Class Date History of the Rights of the Accused and the Warren Court One of the most well known epithets in the United States is innocent until proven guilty. This means that until a prosecution has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that a person accused of a crime has indeed committed that crime, he or she is to be presumed innocent of all charges. In theory, this idea upholds the sense of democracy and fair trial upon which the country was founded. In practice, however, it is less so. Oftentimes, an accusation or a criminal charge defines the person accused, as he or she is already presumed guilty in the court of public opinion. Especially in the cases of high profile trials, most people accept that the person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Constitution clearly outlines the rights of the accused and what steps must be taken before an accused person can be punished. One of these rights is The Writ of Habeas Corpus, which means that a person cannot be held or detained for an unreasonable amount of time without having been charged with a crime. This prevents the government and law officials from imprisoning citizens without cause. Today, a large number of criminal conviction appeals are raised under the habeas corpus privilege, [wherein] individuals ... convicted of crimes ... may demand that the government justify his or her physical confinement (ThisNation). In other words, even if a person has been convicted of a crime, if it is found that his or her right to habeas corpus has been violated, it can nullify the conviction. Another right that is guaranteed to the accused is the right to a trial by jury. Article III of the Constitution guarantees that those who are accused of crimes have the right to have their guilt or innocence determined by a panel of fellow citizens (ThisNation). A person cannot be convicted of a crime without receiving a fair trial, during which the prosecution must present its proof that the accused is guilty. If there is not enough proof to determine that the accused person did commit the crime, then the jury cannot convict, and the accused is free to go. • 12. Descriptive Essay On A Old Dog Our previous dog had just died and we had to put him asleep because he was really old and sick. He had cancer in many spots in his body, he had a massive tumor, and he felt all around miserable. After his sad death within a few months we decided to get a new dog. My dad wanted a hunting dog so that narrowed our options of what type of dog that we could get. The dogs we wanted the most were an Irish setter, English setter, or a German shorthaired pointer which was the type of dog that had just died. All the English setters either costed way to much or were on the opposite side of the country. Some of them were even in different countries. All the Irish setter puppy s were too far away or to much except one breeder had them in Missouri which wasn t to far but we wanted to see if we could find anything else especially because there were a lot of pointers that were in our price range. There was one pointer that we wanted a lot so we decided to meet him at a field with the previous owner. His name was Willy and he was a pointer that we found on a rescue sight. He was about a year old and he was already being trained to hunt. After we met him we thought about getting him in about a week. It was Saturday and we were going to pick up the new dog the next day. The reader is presented with Mattie Silver who is young, and good natured, and Zeena Frome, who is a bitter hypochondriac seven years her husband s senior. Upon a first inspection, Zeena Frome and Mattie Silver of Edith Wharton s Ethan Frome seem to be extreme opposites in every respect, but upon closer scrutiny, one finds though they are indeed different in character, though they eventually share great similarities. Within the first five chapters, Edith Wharton establishes the stark physical differences between young, gay Mattie Silver and unattractive, gloomy Zeena Frome. Mattie and Zeena differ in character as much as they differ in appearance. A great hobby of Zenna s was to find faults with others, though her fault finding was of the silent kind, but not the less penetrating for that. Zeena also had an obstinate silence that frightened Mattie as well as her husband. Ethan s wife was also a great cause of irritation for him: When she spoke, it was only to complain, and to complain of things not in his power to remedy. Of late... her silence had begun to trouble him... and wondered if Zeena was turning queer. At other times her silence seemed deliberately assumed to conceal far reaching intentions, mysterious conclusions drawn from suspicions and resentments impossible to guess. Zeen was a woman turned bitter by too much strife and too little reward. The location of the farm isolated her from her neighbors, so she rarely could socialize with others. Having nothing better to do, Zeena gives her own health fanatical attention. She is occupied constantly with new pills, stomach powders and books on diseases of the liver. Mattie Silver, however, was still young and full of hope and joy. Her small lot of suffering had just enough to give her a sense of appreciation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio Essay An Analysis of Sherwood Anderson s Winesburg, Ohio Under the guise of simplicity, Sherwood Anderson weaves an intricate tale of man s struggle for understanding and love in Winesburg, Ohio. Against a backdrop rich with symbolism, he examines man s truths crumbling behind the walls he has built. Anderson employs a strong use of symbolism in Adventure. Waiting in vain for a self made fantasy to realize, Alice Hindman sacrifices a meaningful life within society. Paper pills, the unspoken ideas of Doctor Reefy, are doses of medicine he cannot prescribe. Another object, money symbolizes the means for freedom or control. Elizabeth Willard s father, on his death bed, gives her eight hundred dollars. Hoping she will take it and go away he pleads with her to keep silent about the money (Anderson 225). Ironically, the very symbol of freedom remains hidden behind a wall, although she struggles in silence to reveal its location and purpose. In Drink, Tom Foster s grandmother finds money and purchases tickets to escape a city filled with ugliness and crime and lust (Anderson 215). Arriving in Winesburg, a bustling town different from the small village of her childhood, she wonders if she has made a mistake. Money did not provide the freedom she sought. Money played an important part in Doctor Parcival s relationship with his brother. His brother controlled the family with his money and the bitterness remained with the doctor throughout his life. Jesse Bentley hungered for what money represented: control, a means for mastering the souls of his people (Anderson 67). The comparison between the Willard Hotel and the owner, Tom, is another example of Anderson s use of symbolism. The building is aging, the wallpaper fading. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Gilded Age By Mark Twain And Charles Warner The Gilded Age The Gilded Age was a great time in American history when industrialization was growing rapidly, and immigration to our country increased dramatically. Mark Twain and Charles Warner named this time of industrial prosperity the Gilded Age because the wealth of the fortunate masked the problems that the society faced. New inventions and corporations led to industrialization and immigration growing in our nation. Industrialization led to the creating of mass culture, which allowed people to have more leisure time. However, all of the great wealth that industrialization brought to the U.S. hid the fact that African Americans faced segregation, and nonwhites were discriminated against during this time in history. The Gilded Age lasted from 1865 to 1914, a short time in U.S. history, but it had a major impact in the advancement of our country! Prostitution And Prostitution Within the research surrounding sex trafficking and its relation to prostitution, an important question is: do different laws and policies on prostitution have a noticeable effect on human trafficking? Which is more likely to decrease sex trafficking: decriminalization of prostitution or strict enforcement of anti prostitution laws? The literature suggests that decriminalizing prostitution may lead to better working conditions for a minority of workers, however legalization can lead to higher rates of sex trafficking. Along with this, other identity factors such as age and immigration status limit any positive impact legalizing prostitution may have on reducing sex trafficking. The research highlights the different ways in which women enter into the field of prostitution. The politician Muhammad Ali Jinnah once said, Think 100 times before you take a decision, but once that decision is taken, stand by it as one man. In the novels Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, and The Odyssey, written by Homer, this message is conveyed throughout. Furthermore, in Lord of the Flies the main character Ralph finds himself on an unfamiliar island and later finds other people. The story is characterized by the conflict between human natures; for example, savagery amongst the children and the hope for rescue. During the course of the book, Ralph is plagued with difficult decisions. Likewise, The Odyssey is about the journeys of a man named Odysseus who has to make numerous tough decisions on his voyage back home. In correlation to the eloquent dialogue of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, when making decisions, one must be thoughtful before undergoing the task. First, when making decisions, one must always acknowledge his opponents. One should especially consider the enemy s strengths and weaknesses. For example, after contemplating the skills of the Cyclops in the cave, Odysseus drew on all [his] wits, and ran through tactics... until a trick came and it pleased [him] well (Fitzgerald 381). Through labelling law, government is also able to impose food standards on products. Foreign animals imported into Canada but slaughtered and/or processed here still qualify for Made in Canada labels, in fact, only pre processed and packaged imported meat requires a country of origin label (Weeks). This is admittedly the most practical option for processed food products comprising many ingredients, but can also be taken as an attempt to hide the true origin of ingredients from the consumer to prevent any bias in selection. Companies stand to lose sales if they reveal all the sources of their ingredients for several reasons. Consumers may have patriotic sympathies and prefer domestic goods. They may also have a bias towards certain countries, perhaps for political or environmental reasons (e.g. whether the food was produced sustainably) (Boyd), and may even doubt the quality of ingredients coming from lesser developed countries. Introduction Out of the fifty five recognized ethnic minorities within China, Uyghur is the 5th largest population out of the 8.3 million. Uyghur independence movements started in 1933, their primary aim was to create a sovereign state called East Turkestan within the region currently known as Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China (XUAR). This thesis seeks to answer the question of how the Chinese government s policies towards the Uyghur s, a Turkish Muslim group living predominately in the North Western Chinese province Xinjiang, have influenced the political strengthening of the Uyghur s. The aspect of this question will be explored: Have the Chinese policies helped to strengthen or weaken Uyghur identity? Traditionalism In The Mayor Of Casterbridge By Thomas Hardy In his foremost literary work, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Thomas Hardy uses the very inspiration of Casterbridge s traditions and setting itself paired with its foremost characters, Michael Henchard and Donald Fafrae, to opine that traditionalism in any sense is an outdated and even self destructive culture; for this reason, it is the duty of the younger generation to resurrect traditionalistic societies from collapsing. Hardy constructs the fictional town of Casterbridge by drawing inspiration from his own hometown, Dorchester, order to convey that standard, traditionalistic societies such as it are lamentable and ever collapsing. Dorchester s many prominent and unlovable features, as in many of Hardy s novels, in fact, are portrayed through direct parallels in Casterbridge s key features and traditions. The skimmity ride organized by Joshua Jopp exposing Lucetta and her shameful history, for example, is a landmark of the society that Hardy created and had lived in. Skimmity rides were actually well known traditionalistic English events; they were carried out in order to express public disdain of sinful marital actions. Seeing that Hardy claims that he has derived Casterbridge from his memories of Dorchester as a child, it is likely that Hardy has witnessed something like this before. This expresses the reality of post World War I as the film s introductory sequence draws upon German Expressionist elements presenting a low angle of towering skyscrapers in Bauhaus design and abstract machinery. This artistic vivid and opulent setting contrasts with extreme close up of machines suggesting the collective power of movement parallel to the workers, as they operate machinery beneath the city in synchronicity. This disparity creates a defined hierarchical structure that juxtaposes the heightened sense of power experienced by the ruling elite with the worker s sense of loss of identity in the face of technological expansion. This extreme dichotomy exposes the innate fear of abuse of power within a capitalist framework as audiences perceived the potential of conformity to a totalitarian corporation, leading to dehumanisation of humanity. Further explored in the creation scene, the political perspective reveals how the over development of technology for progress, consequently results in abuse of power. This is developed as the machine man is displayed in a low angle shot underneath upside down pentagram, the religious motif symbolic of how Rotwang proves to be usurping the powers of god, emphasising that through the abuse of power, technology has the ability to create a loss of identity leading to dehumanisation. The Qin Shi Huangdi Qin Essay Qin Shi Huangdi, the first Qin emperor, was a proactive and ambitious emperor who implemented a central bureaucratic system that oversaw the evolution and unification of China at the cost of public sentiment. The Qin Dynasty is considered among the most influential dynasties as it laid the foundation for the massive cultural and economic development of China that took place during the Han Dynasty, but it also failed to achieve many of its pro commoner ideological goals. In fact, socioeconomic disparity was not alleviated and despite the notion of enriching the lives of the common people, it was under Qin rule in which public resentment of the authoritarian government peaked as there were countless peasant revolts against the iron handed bureaucratic rule of China. Because a paranoid emperor alone wielded political clout and influence, the tumultuous few years of Qin reign was rife with paranoia and suspicion among the masses. Although the Qin Dynasty is seldom thought as possessing the same glaring discrepancy between ideology and state that the Communist regime in post World War II China had despite the similarities, the failure of the flawless egalitarian state models in socioeconomic and political aspects during the Qin Dynasty mirrored the developments in early Communist China. Among the key aspects of the Qin unification was the act of completely clearing all local aristocracies and uniting the peasant class into a single, mobilized workforce. Ideally, the Qin ... • 38. How Is Culture Influenced By American Culture Cultures have been copying each other since the first groups of people roamed the earth. When people see something they like, many will copy the idea to make their own lives more enjoyable or more efficient. This allows unique characteristics of every civilization around the world to become unified. Authors such as Andrew Marantz, Steve Olson, Leslie Savan, Manuel Munoz, Steve Olson, Kwame Anthony Appiah, and Malcolm Gladwell, all believe that the world can become a more unified place. They believe that through media, cultures are blending appearances, traditions, jobs, and social standards on which everyone can live together in a more peaceful world. Culturalization has made huge steps forward and will continue to make changes until the world is unified under the belief of cosmopolitanism. The definition of cosmopolitanism is that all human beings belong together in a single community (Dictionary). Kwame Anthony Appiah writes in his article Cosmopolitanism about how every human being who has ever been on the earth is essentially the same. He shares how everyone is the same at birth, but taught to have different beliefs (Appiah 68). Meaning that everyone was created the same and should be able to get along no matter what cultural beliefs people might obtain. Supporting this argument is the author of Small Change , Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell describes an incident that took place on February 1, 1960, when the famous Greensboro sit ins occurred. Social standards during this time were to be segregated but that all began to change after these and many other sit ins. Word spread through the media about the events and by the end thousands of people were involved which sparked the Civil Rights movement (Gladwell 231). Gladwell discusses how with new social media today it is easy to become involved and learn about different world and cultural events. Maybe this is what will truly help the world turn the corner and create new social standards that will bring people together with a cosmopolitanism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Police Professionalization Movement Case Study 1) What was the police professionalization movement? How was this progressive? How was it not? William Parker the LAPD police chief of the 1950 s created the police professionalization movement in order to raise the statues of how police officer are portrayed, and at the same time gain self governing for police departments (Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.175 176). The main focus of police professionalism was that law enforcement should not have any interference from any other government institution or the community when creating policies for themselves or when dealing with an officer who breaks those policies, in all it emphasized autonomy where all decisions were made from within the police (Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.175 176). Although police professionalism had many flaws for the time it was a progressive movement for several reasons. For one, police professionalism intended to move law enforcement into the future and change how police officers were viewed to a more positive light, but it failed in this aspect (Escobar, E. J., 2003, pg.176). Second, it was mean to reform the police in order to rid it od corrupt officers who took bribery from illegal institutions, and who extorted money from the community ... • 40. Tikki-Tavi What is theme? The theme in a fictional story is what the author wants the reader to learn and apply to their everyday lives. In the story Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, I know the theme is bad things will happen to people if they do bad things to other people. In the beginning, when Nag and Nagaina ate Darzee s egg, Rikki came back to haunt Nagaina by killing her eggs. Plus, when he killed Nag in the bathroom, that was for killing Darzee s egg and gloating about it. People might think the theme is too much ambition leads to negative results, but it s not, so keep looking buddy. The theme is basically, what comes around, goes around. Within this story the superb characters are showered in positive results. The first positive result ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This did not work out well for her because she lost her husband in the process. At the same time Rikki was ambitious too, he wanted his family to be proud of him and he wanted the snakes to be gone. When Rikki killed Nag, Nagaina, their babies, and Karait he achieved what he wanted to do, and his family was proud of him. I hope you realize, this is not a theme Rudyard Kipling wanted you to take away from this story. In conclusion, we discovered Mr. Kipling clearly wanted us to realize what comes around goes around. This is why the evil characters failed in this story. They failed because they were mean to anyone who came into the melon bed. Also, Nag and Nagaina ate Darzee s egg; their eggs were destroyed by Rikki. Plus, they tried to kill the humans, eventually Nag and Nagaina were killed by Rikki. • 42. Heraclitus Ethos Pathos And Logos Seetha Aribindi Heraclitus was one of the natural philosophers from Ephesus in Asia Minor, circa 540 480 B.C. , who believed that constant change or flow was the basic characteristic of nature. He believed the world was characterized by opposites and it would cease to exist without their constant interplay. God is day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, hunger and satiety, he said, believing God can be seen most clearly in constant transformations and contrasts in nature. (p 28) But instead of God he used the greek word logos which means reason, as he believed that there must be a kind of universal reason or universal law guiding everybody and everything that happens in nature. Thus amid constant flux and opposites throughout nature, Heraclitus believed an Entity or one ness , called God or logos was the source of everything. This carbon would also have a partial positive charge due to the electronegativity of the oxygen attached to it. The partial positive charge enables the carbon to be attack by nucleophiles, such as ammonia. When the ammonia, a neutral nucleophile, attacks the electrophilic benzoyl chloride reacts, it will result in a tetrahedral intermediate. • 45. Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Lab Report AGAROSE GEL ELECTROPHORESIS I. INTRODUCTION Agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) is the most common and effective way of separating and analyzing DNA fragments of different sizes (Lee Costumbrado, 2012). The agarose gel, at the time that it is completely polymerized, acts as a molecular sieve that, in the existence of electric current, pull apart DNA by their molecular weight and size. AGE is not mostly used to visualize DNA but also used for quantification or to single out a particular band. The DNA is visualized in the gel by staining with of ethidium bromide (EtBr). EtBr ties strongly to DNA by interpolate between the bases and its fluorescent meaning that it absorbs invisible UV light and transfers the energy as visible orange light (Scientific ... This produces thousands of restriction fragments of all different sizes because the base sequences being cut could be far from each other (long fragment) or close together (short fragment). Gel electrophoresis process is used to detach these fragments on the basis of their sizes. DNA fragments are injected into wells and an electric current is applied along the gel. DNA is negatively charged so it is attracted to the positive end of the gel. The shorter DNA fragments move faster than the longer fragments. DNA is separated on basis of size. A radioactive material is joined which combines with the DNA fragments to yield a fluorescent image. A photographic copy of the DNA bands is acquired.
