Rhetorical Analysis Of Beowulf
During the first marking period of the school year, the concepts that have been taught was how to do
annotations and we covered the literary work, Beowulf. When the topic of annotations was taught I
learned how to annotate a text, which basically is marking up a text with questions, pointing out
interesting pieces. When learning to annotate I also learned about rhetoric. Rhetoric is the way of
speaking or writing persuasively, and an author s rhetoric can be found using the rhetorical triangle.
The rhetorical triangle is a triangle used to answer the following questions: Who created the text, who
did they create the text for and why did they create this text? The audience is who the message is for,
and may include a specific age or gender to get the author s purpose across. The rhetorical appeals that
might be used by an author to get his or her message across would be appealing to the audiences
ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is the perception of credibility, trustworthiness, and characteristics,
pathos is the emotional appeal and logos is the perception of logic given off by the author. ... Show

The poem does have mysteries behind it that cannot be answered such as: Who wrote it, when was it
written, and how much of the poem is based on historical truth. I also learned that the only copy of the
manuscript was written around the 11th century, but the actual poem dates back to the 8th century and
the poem was set in an earlier time period of 500 A.D. The poem also includes a lot of references to
Christianity, but the characters and setting stem from the Pagan belief. During the cycle I also learned
about kennings which are a compound metaphor, usually consisting of two words where the

United States Dollar as Reserve Currency
In February of 2011, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shocked the world by calling for the
United States dollar to be replaced as the global world currency (Rooney, 2011). In one report, the
world s dirty little monetary secret had been exposed; faith in the US dollar was faltering. Since then,
international attitudes toward the US dollar have only gotten worse. With 2013 debt at approximately
105 percent of gross domestic product and a negative outlook rating from Standard s and Poor, the
United States is looking like an insolvent bank no one wants to keep their money in. In addition, the
dollar has lost 97 percent of its value since being taken off the gold standard in 1971 (Mack, 2011).
This makes holding the dollar long term a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While it is said the dollar is now back by the full faith and credit of the United States, this faith and
credit is largely treasury bonds, or debt, much of which are held overseas by foreign governments.
Ever since the US dollar went off the gold standard in 1971, other countries have had doubts about
keeping the dollar as the world s reserve currency. The first concern was that no fiat currency has
succeeded long term. In a study of 775 fiat currencies (Mack, 2011), there was no historical
precedence for a fiat currency that has succeeded in holding its value. 20 percent failed through
hyperinflation, 21 percent were destroyed by war, 12 percent destroyed by independence, 24 percent
were monetarily reformed, and 23 percent are still in circulation approaching one of the other
outcomes (Mack, 2011). The average life expectancy for a fiat currency is 27 years, with the shortest
life span being one month (Mack, 2011). It is one thing if an individual country s fiat currency
collapses, but if a world reserve currency collapses, such as the US dollar, the world s economy will
collapse with it.
Another issue is the dramatic drop in the value in the dollar. As stated earlier, the US dollar has lost 97
percent of its value since being taken off the gold standard in 1971 (Mack, 2011). Not only does a
weaker dollar translate into a cut in the real spending power of American consumers, it makes the
dollar a very poor investment for investors and central banks around the

Why Do People With Developmental Disabilities
Comparing to general population, but the people with developmental disabilities can be a diverse
group with the level of functioning impairment that may cause by different some sort of congenital
chronic conditions that may complicate to mental or physical impairments. There is a large amount of

Volkswagen Cause And Effects
CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF VOLKSWAGEN COURT SETTLEMENT
Although many individuals are unaware of the TDI diesel emissions court settlement between
Volkswagen and their customers; there are two causes and several effects. John German discovered
the Volkswagen emissions scandal. It turns out that, the lawsuit came about due to cheating software
that Volkswagen installed in their 2.0 and 3.0 liter diesel vehicles. In turn, a few effects of the cheating
software resulted in a 14.7 billion dollar lawsuit between Volkswagen and their buyers, disappointed
customers, and huge inconveniences (Bartlett,2017). Due to the software installed in TDI diesel
vehicles, there are up to 11 million vehicles affected.
In May of 2014, John German discovered, and went public about the Volkswagen emissions scandal
(Kretchmer, 2015). John German is a senior co lead for the International Council on Clean
Transportation. Mr. German has worked for the Washington based Environmental Protection Agency
for 13 years, which indicates that he knows what the requirements and enforcement are. German
partnered with West Virginia University and conducted the ICCT study. During the ICCT study,
German noticed detrimental nitrogen oxide emission levels; which leads him to think Volkswagen
diesel cars were malfunctioning. German felt vehicles were malfunctioning because they were passing
emissions testing, yet the vehicles had up to 35 times permitted levels of nitrogen oxide.

Robert Merton s Theory Of The Strain Theory
Strain Theory Throughout history many sociologist and criminologist have developed theories to
explain crimes in society. Robert Merton was an American sociologist. He believed societies like the
United States create deviant citizens because they do not give them the tools to create The American
Dream . There are various things that can turn a citizen deviant such as the inability to achieve valued
goals, the presence of negative stimuli, and the removal of positive stimuli. A deviant citizen is not
always a criminal, deviant citizens are simply defined as someone who goes out of societies norm.
The behavior of citizens lead Merton to developed the Strain Theory. This theory explains how the
strains of society effect and generate criminal behavior in order to achieve the American Dream. The
American Dream is a social construct that has been created through media to promote an acceptable
living status. The social status is constantly changing, but overall, it s a reflection of upper middle
class and possessing higher education. Countries like the United States have such a great emphasis on
wealth, but don t provide the things needed to achieve it. For example, if you attend public schools in
a under privileged neighborhood you may not have the funds or opportunity to go to college. Not
having a certain level of education can prevent you from jobs which has a ripple effect on your
environment and home life. This ripple effect is well known in today s society causing citizens

Wayfarer Frames
Retro style eyeglass frames are rising in popularity especially since the trendsetters have been sporting
these vintage frame designs from the bygone eras with great fervor. These frames have been designed
at different points in time in the past and reflect the trends of that time. All of them are unique and
special. They are also made out of different materials with some of them made out of gold, silver,
tortoiseshell, etc. Wearing eyeglasses can be fun since retro style eyeglass frames can help you stand
out from the crowd. However, unlike a few of the universally flattering shapes such as wayfarer and
aviator, each one of the retro style frames has a unique shape and is meant to suit a specific face shape.

They have made comebacks every few years and never really went out of style. They are a favourite
amongst both men and women since they are sturdy and tend to suit most face shapes. These frames
come in a range of colors that you can choose to suit your style. Aviator Frames: The teardrop shaped
aviator frames have risen in popularity for both eyeglasses and sunglasses. Aviator frames suit
everyone and look great with both casual and formal clothing. They were first developed in 1920 s and
have been one of the most sought after vintage eyeglasses frames since then. Round wire Frames:
Round wire frames, sometimes known as granny glasses, were released way before John Lennon
made them famous. They became a part of his image and consequently remained popular in the 1960 s
and 70 s. These frames have made a huge comeback now. They can add softness to the sharp and
strong features of people with square shaped faces. Browline Frames: Unlike the other types of
eyeglasses frames, browline eyeglass frames add a strong look to the face because of the thick and
dark plastic upper frame. These frames work well for soft face shapes such as oval and round faces
especially since the thick browline adds more dimension to the

Gender, Sexual Orientation And Education
In today s society, there are divides that impede the movement of progress. These divides may
disperse around a number of issues that revolve around gender, religion, sexual orientation and
education. These divides have created an un opened minded society that judge people and groups
based on the prejudices and stereotypes that treat them differently. In the aspect of identity
discrimination, American society plays a big role in keeping those that are different isolated from the
rest of the world. Today s society suffers huge from a spectrum that focuses power on discrimination.
In this spectrum, transgender individuals are perceived as people that are most damaging than

Now one might say transgendered individuals get more special treatment than any other citizen, there
are some cases that support one s theory, and there s the cases that support transgendered people being

transgendered individuals become a victim to a hate crime because of their sexual orientation. Many
transgenders get terminated because of their gender identity or planned transition because ones not
comfortable with their lifestyle or it s a sin to change the gender one was born with. Becoming a
terminated employee because of how one present themselves to others in the workplace is an issue
that majority of society does not see anything wrong with, being fired should never be based on what
one does outside of work but on the performance and the quality of the work that s being done inside

Communist Manifesto By Marx Engels
After firstly briefly reading part of communist manifesto from The Marx Engels Reader, I have a
general understanding about The Communist Manifesto presents an analytical approach to the class
struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism. I am more like concerning on
bourgeoisie and proletarians.
The reason I interested in this section because it introduces and explains the final conflict between the
bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Tucker (1978) states: The proletariat goes through various stages of
development. With its birth begins its struggle with the bourgeoisie. At first the contest is carried on
by individual laborers, then by the work people of a factory, then by the operatives of one trade, in one
locality, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also presents ways in which the proletariat is a unique class, which is connected with improved
communication. The most significant trait of the proletariat is that they have nothing to lose because
based on the nature of being proletarians; they have no power at all. What they must do is destroying
the entire system. So when there is a revolution, they will destroy the entire system of class
exploitation, such as private property. ( The Communist Manifesto, n.d.,)
As for this part, he first introduces the idea that economic concerns of a nation, and that the struggle
between the rich bourgeoisie and the hard working proletariat would eventually lead to Communism.
He then depicts how the bourgeois can always get what they wanted. Marx emphasizes positives that
were done by this group, but he certainly seemed consider more on the negatives committed by the
bourgeois.
He defines the proletarians, or the labor class, and how they were formed, suffered, and what struggles
they met. Historically, we can critically say that the proletariat is very particular. Because as the
communist manifesto states: in the past, when a class got the upper hand, it tried to subject all of
society to its own mode of appropriation. However, the proletariat lacks any property to keep and
expand. They must destroy all ways of securing private property. Another key factor of the proletariat
is that, while minorities started past movements, the proletariats are a

Hybrid Vehicles and Earth s Changing Climate Essays
Motorized Vehicles are one of the most important technologies within our modern world. We use cars
for many reasons, some are to run errands, go to a friend s house, or even on a family vacation.
Transportation plays a huge role in not only America, but also most of the world. Cars offer fast and
reliable hauling from place to place. Technology has led us to cars that emit gasses that harm the
environment but have also pushed us to scientifically advance our system into being more energy
efficient. Hybrid cars are the alternative solution to solving our problem of global warming. Hybrid
cars help our environment a great deal because they are fuel efficient, reduce pollution, and help
preserve our oil and end foreign oil dependency. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Buying a hybrid isn t just saving you money on gas but it also keeps our planet clean. Every time an
automobile burns a gallon of gasoline it releases 22 pounds of carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide is
also a damaging greenhouse gas. Cars account for 76 percent of the carbon monoxide in the earth s air.
Carbon monoxide affects the bloods total capacity for carrying oxygen to the heart, brain, and other
important organs (CEERT). Fuel efficiency isn t just a benefit to saving money; it is a major benefit
for the health of everybody. Instead of clogging the air with unhealthy and deadly gasses, we can
minimize the health issues that are related to the unhealthy atmosphere. Fuel efficiency is one of the
main reasons Americans purchase a new car and with technology advancing each day; we see the trial
and error of the modern world evolve. By the automobile technology rising, we haven t just found a
solution to our problem but have also created a major problem by polluting the earth. In past years,
levels of air, noise, and sight pollution were much lower than they are today. There are more cars on
the road today, and because of this we experience higher levels of pollution than before. The
automobile is one of the leading suppliers of pollution in our cities. They release toxic emissions into
our atmosphere that are affecting not only humans but affecting the world around us. Automobiles are
linked particularly to carbon monoxide pollution.

Genetic Testing Persuasive Essay
What would you do if an immediate family member of yours developed a popular genetic disease and
there was a possibility of you having it? Wouldn t you want to know whether or not you had it as well,
in your genes? Genetic testing allows for people to know if they have a certain genetic disease, if they
need to get a certain treatment plan set up, or if there are ways to prevent it from becoming present or
visible in the body. Genetic Discrimination is no longer legally allowed, meaning that there is no
longer a need to fear the possibility of your genetic information getting into the wrong hands. Genetic
testing should be done by anyone who may have a chance of developing any type of disease that could
be life threatening or not. Genetic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it is greatly feared that your genetic information will get in the hands of the wrong person, it
is now protected by the law. Genetic Discrimination is no longer allowed because both federal and
state laws have been made against allowing employers and insurance agents to discriminate you based
on a genetic disease you may have. These laws are part of the GINA Genetic Information
Nondiscrimination Act. There are two titles within GINA, Title One prohibits Genetic Discrimination
in Health Insurance and Title Two prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Employment. Others may argue
that genetic testing is unreliable and does not work to detect genetic diseases in all parts of the body.
Among the variety of genetic tests, some yield high rates of false positive and false negative results,
while others are characterized by findings that are precise but of uncertain clinical or predictive value
(1998, Hastings Center Report, 15 21). Although that may be true, there can be tests done in other
parts of the body to get better results instead of the false results. Taking blood from another location in
the body will allow the patient to get the true positive or negative that they need to tell if they have the

Effective And Rational Priority Setting Of Health...
Baltussen et al. (2006, 2010) and Peacock et al. (2009) suggested that MCDA can make a difference in
making better and more transparent decision in the setting priorities in health. Baltussen et al. (2006)
argued that priority setting in health intervention was often ad hoc and decisions were not optimally
made. Instead they suggested implementing MCDA into health intervention decision making since
there are many criterias to be considered in the priority setting of health intervention. They illustrated
the comparison between ad hoc priority setting and rational priority setting in the following figure.
Peacock et al. (2009) stated that MCDA is important because the degree of conflict between criteria,
or conflict between different stakeholders regarding the importance of different criteria, is such that
intuitive decision making is unsatisfactory (p. 127). However, they suggested using MCDA in health
care planning for policy makers, they stated that they did not suggest abandoning the current tools that
policy makers used to make decision. Therefore, in this review, I have also included an example from
priority setting in health interventions without MCDA as well. Priority setting in health interventions
without an application of MCDA González Pier et al. (2006) presented the Mexican standardised
analytical approach, which has installed between 2001 and 2006, to the priority setting for health

Community Reflection Paper
For the service learning project, I teamed up with three of my classmates to volunteer at a lady s
conference at Imani Restoration Centre church (IRCC) on the 16th of September, 2017. IRCC is a non
profit organization which is a Kenyan community founded that focuses on bringing African
immigrants together to support and learn the things of God. Samuel Mwangi, the senior pastor of
IRCC, said that through the counseling sessions that he holds at the church every Thursday, he
discovered that most ladies go through the same challenges. Therefore, he thought it would be great
for him to organize a lady s conference, so that ladies could come together to share and support each
other (Personal communication, September, 16, 2017)
The ladies conference was held in the church building, and we were assigned to take care of the
children and assist with feeding the congregation. The meeting was starting at 8:00 am; However, we
arrived 30 minutes earlier to help with the arrangement of the furniture. The ladies began dropping
their kids to the daycare room around 8:15 am. I could not help noticing that most ladies seemed
overwhelmed and tired though there was this particular lady who came with tears dripping her face.
We were assigned about 35 kids to take care of throughout the conference. The children ages ranged
from 3 to 12 years. We assigned the children into groups according to their age. The first group was
for ages 3 to 5 the second was for ages 6 to 8, and the third was for ages 9 to 12. We served the kids
bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and sausages for breakfast at 9.30 am. I could not help noticing the
joy in the kid s faces, and one kid told me that the meal was the best breakfast she ever had. We kept
the children engaged with games, Tv shows, and sessions of activities such as storytelling and singing.
We also performed some indoor sports which most kids did not want the session to end.
The members of the church had supplied the conference with African food, pizza, and drinks for
lunch. Most children preferred to eat pizza while the ladies chose to eat the African cuisine. We first
made sure that all the kids were fed before attending to their mothers around noon. At three o clock we
served the kids

Research Paper On Rugby
Rugby Should be a School Sport Imagine it is a Friday night underneath the lights, in October, and

was particularly anxious about college players. (Khaleeli). One study that The Guardian used to
expose the trauma that football players receive is that out of 35 football players that was examined, 34
showed signs of brain trauma. In rugby, players are taught to use their arms to wrap a player s legs and
let the momentum of that player cause him to go to ground. Furthermore, in rugby there is no

is used in rugby because he wanted to expose that the technique is very different and much safer than
how football players tackle. To be sure, rugby players get lots of bloody noses, chipped teeth, broken
fingers but they like to show off these injuries, so one might come under the impression that rugby is a
very rough sport. (Mckenna). Jim Mckenna is a doctor and rugby coach. He brought up a valid point,

them pointed out by Cook (2008 p.185) Customer service is what the customer says it is . This

employees and why customer satisfaction is important especially within the service sector. To
illustrate this, an example of a bad customer service that was condoned by myself will be provided.

The Secret of Starbucks Success in China
The current event article I found tells about the successful marketing strategies that the Starbucks
Corporation takes to enter into the market of China, and simultaneously the problems and difficulties
it has in the process of market expanding. The Starbucks Corporation is the global leader in specialty
coffee consumption. Arising almost overnight from a market in Seattle, Washington, the company

In addition, due to the higher price, it completely cut off the low consumer groups, which improve its

more on its service instead of the product. And the article says that the Starbucks require its operators
to identify with the idea and the brand of the corporation, and also emphasizes the consistency of the
operation, discipline and quality (Guang, 2011). Lastly, Starbucks has a unique promotion idea
according to the article, which says that it thinks in service industry, the most important marketing
channel is the branch store itself, not the advertisement (Guang, 2011). Therefore, Starbucks does not
spend lots of money on advertising, instead, it persist in training its employees to be knowledgeable
and enthusiastic, which has become a unique feature of Starbucks promotion.
However, because Starbucks expands rapidly in the global market in order to pursue the financial
numbers, it causes a reduction of the brand value, which is one of the major problems that Starbucks
Corporation encounters in the process of expanding Chinese market. Furthermore, in China, there is a
large gap between economic strength of the large cities and small cities. Because the price of
Starbucks coffee is too high, therefore it is hard for Starbucks s market development in the medium
and small cities in China. The last major

How Did Isaac Newton Contribute To The Discovery Of Calculus
Calculus is a means for calculating the way quantities vary with each other, rather than just the
quantities themselves. Mathematicians everywhere contributed to the development of Calculus.
However, we usually give credit to Isaac Newton and Gottfried William Leibniz. Today, the credit is
given to both men, however, in the 1600s a controversy occurred over which of them deserved credit.
Isaac Newton is a very well known scientists and is recognized as one of the most accomplished
mathematicians. He was born in 1643, and began the discovery of Calculus in 1666. However, he did
not publish his work until thirty two years later in 1704. Newton claims that he began working on the

City Tuition Jacked Up
Review of Cyril J. Barker s CUNY tuition jacked up, New York Amsterdam Times, 102(48), 1 35.
How might you use the strategies for applying creativity to problems and issues in addressing this
topic? There are few solutions, creative or otherwise, available to students in New York City as a
result of recent tuition hikes. The decision to increase tuition rates for some New York City s colleges
was met with protests, cancellation of classes, and the arrests of hundreds of students and supporters
following the announcement. The amount of the tuition increase, about $1,500 a year (a whopping 30
percent increase according to one student interviewed for the article), appears to have been the last
straw for many of these protestors who have witnessed their tuition increase time and again in recent
years. The tuition hikes were the result of a new law authorizing the increases enacted in 2012 in
response to increasing costs at the state s educational institutions. The increases are effective through
2015, and are being imposed statewide. Critics of the tuition hike argue that it is just another step
towards the complete privatization of the state s colleges which are being turned into elitist institutions
by City University of New York (CUNY) Chancellor Matthew Goldstein. Although the tuition hikes
were authorized by the New York state legislature, there were no alternatives to the hike advanced by
the legislature or the administrators of the state s colleges. How might you

Sergeant Major Morris. The Sergeant Major has explained to them that the paw had a spell cast. The
Sergeant Major warns him about the consequences and then throws it into the fire but then Mr. White
pulls it out. After The Sergeant left, Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds to pay off the house. The next
day, the couple s son Herbert is killed in an accident at work, and the company pays the couple 200
pounds in compensation (Jacobs, 1 5), This connects to the theme of Greed and lust for something you
don t need can lead to tragic consequences Amoruso because the couple did not know what they were
getting into but were willing to make a wish even though they did not need it. This theme is conveyed
by the literate techniques of description and dialogue to accomplish the goals of creating a setting,
building a modd, introducing the characters and building suspense.
For instance, the author uses the description technique to create setting and build the mood. In the ...

Sergeant Major knew how dangerous the monkey s paw was and was only trying to avoid a tragic
scene. Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud , said the sergeant major, but I warn you of the

The conversation between the man and sergeant major. Through that technique the author is able to
show that there is consequences coming if he holds it up in his right hand wishing out loud. In
conclusion, the author does a really good job making sure that the readers are comprehending the story
by using this technique as well as making the story interesting by adding suspense to

Std Essay
Anyone who is sexually active can acquire an STD. However, the CDC states that while sexually
transmitted diseases affect individuals of all ages, STDs take a particularly heavy toll on young
people. CDC estimates that youth ages 15 24 make up just over one quarter of the sexually active
population, but account for half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted infections that occur in the
United States each year (CDC, 2017). STDs are an apparent problem in the United States and a
growing problem. Factors Related to the High Rate of STDS in the Bronx In general, there are a
variety of factors related to sexually transmitted diseases. Three factors related to the high rate of
STDs in the Bronx specifically include education ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While lack of education and economic barriers are two large factors related to the problem, another
crucial factor related to the high rate of STDs in the Bronx is age. For several reasons, adolescents are
at a higher risk for developing sexually transmitted diseases and statistically are the population with
the highest rate of STDs in the United States. The CDC states The burden of sexually transmitted
diseases (STDs) among people aged 15 24 years accounts for nearly half of all STDs reported in the
U.S (CDC, 2015). Adolescents are a vulnerable population as they are undergoing so many changes
and this can make them more susceptible to partaking in risky sexual behavior. In the Bronx,
adolescents make up the largest population at 25.3% of the total population (U.S. Census Bureau,
2016). The high rate of STDs in adolescents and the large population of adolescents in the Bronx
correlates with the high rate of STDs in the Bronx. The issue of an education barrier can have a
detrimental effect on a population when it comes to healthcare, especially sexual healthcare because it
is not something people tend to discuss openly. It is important that people receive some sort of sexual
education so that they can keep themselves and others safe and healthy. Without this education, people
will not have the proper knowledge base on which to make the right decisions when it comes to their
sexual health and well being. It is

Whole Foods
1. (a) Whole Foods operates in the organic, or natural and specialty foods retail industry. Leading the
industry, Whole Foods Market is the world s most successful natural foods grocery chain. Having
recently acquired one of its main competitors, Wild Oats Market, Whole Foods currently competes
with two other large grocery chains—Kroger and Trader Joe s. The company also acquired Amrion, a
company specializing in nutraceuticals (natural supplements with pharmaceutical type benefits),
creating considerable competition with General Nutrition Centers (GNC) nutritional supplements and
dietary products. Additional competition is taking place in traditional grocery stores incorporating
some organic products on to their shelves.

Intensity of Rivalry Among Competitors Within the foods retail industry Whole Foods largest
competitors are Wal Mart, and Kroger. Within the organic foods retail industry, the competition is
Trader Joe s and smaller localized organic grocery stores. Whole Foods also competes with GNC s
dietary products and nutritional supplements. Most of the relationships are not equally balanced but
industry growth in the organic market is increasing and this will raise the strategic stakes. There are no
significant exit barriers so a moderately intense rivalry among the larger competitors will exist. While
the foods retail industry is highly competitive, Whole Foods has established a reputation and
maintains a brand loyalty with its customers. Increased rivalry will occur in the larger grocery chains
like Wal Mart and Kroger, because of their flexibility in the products they can offer, and the pressures
they can put on the sales growth and overall profits of Whole Foods. They have a larger cash and
customer base, and the ability to better advertise their products, while Whole Foods still generates

The Importance Of Serving As A Naval Officer
One of the most interesting and, at times, challenging aspects of serving as a Naval Officer is working
with a team of people from a diverse background. The sailors I have worked with come from all over
the United States, and even some from other countries. While this has led to a rich experience, it
sometimes presented a leadership challenge. What I found out quickly was that every sailor
approached his or her service in the Navy slightly different. Some sailors served because a relative
did, some to pay for college, and some joined to see the world. The more I spoke with sailors, the
more I understood the importance for me, as a leader, to not only know the people I was leading, but
also to try to understand their perspective. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He drew on his own experiences, both inside and outside the Navy. Much of what he believed was
based on his wife s experience as a high school teacher. As much as I tried to convince him, it was to
no avail, because he had a set of beliefs about discipline that guided every decision he made.
What I understand know, after reading Thomas Kuhn s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1996)
was that his paradigm about discipline was different from mine. In fact, our paradigms were what
Kuhn (1996) describes as incommensurable. The idea of incommensurability accounts for the
different way that my commander and I viewed the world (Kuhn, 1996). Our paradigms about
discipline were so different that we could not even really have a conversation about it without one of
us getting angry or frustrated. At the time I did not understand this concept, and it left me confused
about how he could approach a situation in a way that I viewed as harsh and unfair. Eventually, we
were able to understand each other, and move forward, and eventually work together to find the best
solution to future problems. We came to an understanding that we felt differently sometimes, but
began to try to view the situation from each other s point of view. Had I possessed the knowledge that
I do now about Kuhn s ideas, I would have immediately understood the problem, and been able to
articulate my views to him and help us both understand that

Emily Grierson s Time
Time Does Not Stand Still Miss Emily Grierson was a proper lady of Jefferson. Unfortunately for her,
she came to live in a time when being a proper lady was no longer what was expected. She avoided
any sort of change coming to her life, and because of it, the world moved on without her. The story
takes place in the South, as is illustrated a few times throughout the story. It took place some time
between the 1860 s and the 1930 s, which illustrates the source of some problems for Miss Emily. That
was just after the civil war, and that was a period of great change for the South. Not only did the South
have to quickly extinguish slavery, it changed from agriculture to factories with almost the same pace.
Most of the people in Jefferson had someone to go through these changes with, but Emily did not.
Clearly her father was wealthy. He would have owned a fair amount of slaves, one of whom was
probably Tobe, the Negro ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before, she had not had anyone to help her through the change, but now she did not have anyone at
all. There was no one to remind her of the passage of time. The only one who might have done this
was Tobe, and as he was a Negro, he did not count in her mind. Homer probably helped her to accept
the fact that time was moving, yet as she was beginning to adjust, beginning to move with time again,
she lost him. He threatened to leave her, so she trapped him in time with her. William Faulkner grew
up in the South, which had a definite influence on his writing. Born in 1897, he was too young to have
watched slavery die, and yet he knew many of those who had. A Rose for Emily could easily have had
its beginnings in someone he knew through childhood. After all, he watched those around him fall into
poverty because their wealth was based on their human property. Once they lost that, they lost their
fortune as well. It must have been easy for William Faulkner to picture them losing their mind as

Behavior Change Theories and Models
Week 1 Assignment
HCA 331: Introduction to Health Care Education
Instructor: Debra Storlie
September 23, 2013
In order for health education to be successful, it is imperative to fully understand how behavior can
change in an instant. Health education depends on using the proper theories and models. This paper
will address the theories and models used in health education, the importance of the theories, as well
as real world examples and information from models used in health education. To understand why it is
important to use theories, one must first understand the difference between theories and models. While
theories are a set of interrelated concepts and definitions and propositions used to present a systematic
view of events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Health belief model provides useful framework for investigating predictors of condom use
behaviors among high risk adolescents, whether male or female. For the precaution adoption process,
a real world application is eating healthy and exercising to control weight. While an individual may be
well aware that he/she has an unhealthy diet, they may lack the motivation to make the necessary
changes. Motivation is vital if the precaution adoption model is to be successful. A cross sectional
survey among 979 non obese adults, aged 25 35 years, was conducted. Perceived behavioral control
was lowest among people who had decided to prevent weight gain, only 85% surveyed intended to
prevent weight gain (Wammes, Kremers, Breedveld, amp; Brug, 2013). Acknowledging there is a risk,
or potential for risk is great but without motivation the problem/risk will persist and likely get out of
hand. The similarities found in all the models is that they are all centered around individuals and their
choices and decisions on whether or not to make the best of their choices. A healthy lifestyle is a
choice each individual must make for their self, choices that health educators are required to inform
their clients of. Health educators must know about the theories and models used in health education so
they will properly be educated themselves in order to help their clients to a healthy lifestyle. Theories

Capital Punishment Of The Criminal Justice System
In the United States, capital punishment has always been the spotlight of many debates concerning the
consequences of severe crimes. Although capital punishment is deemed to be acceptable for violent
crimes such as murder, there are numerous individuals who oppose the usage of capital punishment
against violent offenders. Both proponents and opponents have given countless opinions concerning
the deterrence effect of capital punishment. Research studies have also added fuel to the debate in
regards to the effectiveness of capital punishment in the criminal justice system. With the differences
in between the pros and cons of capital punishment, it is hard to come to a concrete conclusion on
whether or not if this element serves its purpose in the penal system. This paper will further discuss if
capital punishment is effective in deterring violent crimes as well its implications for the future.
As common knowledge, the word punishment is usually used to describe something that is a painful
consequence or outcome based on one s actions and/or poor decision making. In the criminal justice
system, punishment is a sanction that is opposed on offenders for committing a criminal offense
(Banks, 2013). Thus, the utilization of capital punishment is not new when it comes to the element of
punishment. Capital punishment can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece. For example,
Socrates was tried and executed for corrupting the minds of Athenian youth (Ristroph, 2009,

Us Dollar Euro Exchange Rate Essay
Introduction An analysis involving the U.S. dollar euro (USD EUR) exchange rate involves an in
depth study on the exchange rate between the two currencies. The U.S. dollar euro exchange rate in
the past was the most analyzed subject studied in global economics. However, any results attempted in
studying the dollar euro exchange rate has not been that successful in the past. This is due to
researchers not being able to make a connection between the fundamentals of macroeconomics and
exchange rates (Molodtsova, Nikolsko Rzhevskyy, Papell, 2011). For this purpose, this paper will
discuss where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in the past, where it is in the present, and
where it is expected to be at in the future?
The Past of the U.S. Dollar Euro Exchange Rate Where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in
the past several decades from 1999 2014 is as follows. Ever since the euro was created in January of
1999, the value of it has equaled to $1.17. In October of 2000, the dollar was gaining strength when
the euro was just $0.88. Afterwards the dollar continued to decline against the euro by 39% from 2001
to 2004 (Islam, 2005). However, in 2005 the dollar rose, but negative outlooks began to occur during
the Great Recession in 2006. As the dollar started to decline in 2006 before the subprime mortgage
crisis, capital flows caused more volatility in dollar euro exchange rate market forcing individuals to
deal with this economic situation (Harvey,

The s Theory Of Personal Identity And Diversity
Edin Hodzic
Philosophy Final Paper

Homicidal Somnambulism
Imagine that one night you end up sleepwalking and end up killing someone. Sounds crazy doesn t it?
Things like this have actually happened. There are now 68 known cases of homicidal somnambulism.
(BBC) . Homicidal somnambulism is the act of murdering someone while in the state of sleepwalking.
The legal argument for this has been that the defendant was not in their normal state of mind while
this has happened and therefore cannot be blamed for such a crime.
Locke is known to believe in his theory of personal identity and diversity. Locke s theory talks about
consciousness and how our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences. Locke states
that we are only considered guilty of committing a crime if we were aware of it and remember doing
it. Although I agree with Locke in some terms regarding our identity having something to do with our
consciousness, I do not fully agree. I believe that personal identity is what we see ourselves as whether
that be physical features, morals, or anything that crosses those lines.
One of the problems that comes to mind with this to me is how could we prove that someone was
actually sleepwalking and that they are unaware of their actions. Can we trust them and take their
word for it or is there a scientific way in which we can prove it.
Locke distinguishes between man and person. Locke s theory talks about consciousness and how our
consciousness makes our

Emergency Department Ratios
Soleimanpour et. al (2011) explained that patient satisfaction is an essential component in the
Emergency Department (ED) because it is the entrance for patients to receive their initial treatments.
The most important and single possible cause for ED patients flow problem is the availability of
inpatients beds (Peck et. al, 2012). The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) (2011)
explained that the primary cause of ED overcrowding is boarding; which was defined as holding
patients in the ED after the admission had been completed due to unavailability of inpatient beds.
Lutheran Medical Center faced this problem and in his paper will discuss analysis of the problem,
determination of possible quality lapses, identification of performance measures, designing and
evaluation of the interventions and reporting of the results. The quality improvement tool which would
be used to analyze the problem is the Root Cause Analysis (RCA), which is a post hoc process to

Iowa s Yamato Attacks
The US Battleship Iowa could fire a 2700 pound armor piercing artillery shell twenty three miles. The
Japanese Battleship Yamato could fire eighteen inch shells that weighed as much as a Toyota twenty
five miles, although not as accurate as the Iowa. The Iowa could go 32.5 knots, or 37.4 miles per hour.
The Yamato could travel 27 knots, or 31 miles per hour. These were two of the greatest battleships of
World War II. Although the greatest and most powerful ship ever built at the time, the Yamato did not
survive the war. She and her sister ship, the Musashi were sunk by torpedoes and bombs from carrier
based aircraft. The Iowa did survive, and in fact an entire fleet of ships are called Iowa Class ships

This will be what the government hopes is a new battleship. It is the most technologically advanced
ship ever built. It is expected to be run by computers and require only nineteen sailors per shift to man
the bridge. Everything from the valves on the showers to the turrets for the guns will be automated.
And unlike the crew from the Iowa class ships, the sailors onboard the new modernized battleship will
have many creature comforts including libraries and lounges. The smallest spaces for the lowest ranks
will only have four people per room and bathroom, which is an upgrade from the Iowa class ships.(
Inside The Zumwalt Destroyer ) What is the coolest thing about the Zumwalt is that is shows up on
radar as a small fishing vessel, not the mighty battleship that it is at 610 feet. It has many of the
features talked about previously in this paper including a helipad for two helicopters, but unfortunately
cannot accommodate an Osprey. If it is ever completed the Zumwalt will be armed with two long
range guns that fire guided artillery shells up to 72 miles, two smaller guns to protect it from things
that may come too close, and 80 different missile launch points. Another cool thing is that the Navy is
also thinking about putting a futuristic rail gun and lasers on it too. Current US Navy tests have
concluded the railgun will most likely have a range of over 100 miles.( The Most Technologically

Manley Pointer Vs Misfit
The Manley Pointer and the Misfit
The Manley Pointer and the Misfit have many similarities and differences. They both play the role of
the bad guy, or the antagonist in the stories by Flannery O Connor. They also leave the two main
woman, the Grandma and Hulga dazed and scared. The Grandmother s last words and actions were,
Why you re one of my babies. You re one of my own children! She reached out and touched him on
the shoulder. The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the
chest. This shows he s incapable of feeling or recieving contact or love from another human. While,

leaving with her wooden leg. Another comparison between the two is that they both have done this
before. This wasn t the Misfits first kill, and this wasn t Manley Pointer s first time harassing a woman
and taking a token. Pointer says, I ve gotten a lot of interesting things, he said. One time I got a
woman s glass eye this way. And you needn t to think you‖ll catch me because Pointer ain t really my

The Oppression Of The Feminist Theory
Without having an acceptable amount of knowledge about feminism, many individuals may think that
it focuses exclusively on promoting the superiority of women over men, however feminism s main
focus is to understand the inequality amongst both genders. Most individuals may think feminists are
only women supporters, however they advocate for equal rights amongst both genders. Feminism is
devoted to empowering women, influencing them to push for equality, and improving the conditions
of their lifestyles. The feminist theory is a theory that supports feminism. The goals of the feminist
theory are to generate options for social change and appraise the status quo. This theory proposes that

Some examples of these female activities are childrearing and teaching. Anoother key concept of the
feminist theory is social movements which are basically marches and protests. This is when
individuals who are advocating the same cause march and protests of a social change. During social
movemements, individuals are able to speak up about how they feel towards a soial change. Lastly, the
most important aspect to the feminist theory is intersectionality. An example of this would be a
Hispanic person living in an African American dominated community vs. an African amerian
individual living in a Hispanic domincated community. Ultimately, the strengths of feminist theory are
that they critique power dynamics within families, meaning that some gender roles that are fixed in
society, are not fixed within the family due to a parent being a feminist in the family. Also, another
strength is valuing and hearing women s voices, which is very vital. Women s voice are not often
heard in society, so the feminist theory allows these individuals to be a voice for themselves and the

  • 2. Rhetorical Analysis Of Beowulf During the first marking period of the school year, the concepts that have been taught was how to do annotations and we covered the literary work, Beowulf. When the topic of annotations was taught I learned how to annotate a text, which basically is marking up a text with questions, pointing out interesting pieces. When learning to annotate I also learned about rhetoric. Rhetoric is the way of speaking or writing persuasively, and an author s rhetoric can be found using the rhetorical triangle. The rhetorical triangle is a triangle used to answer the following questions: Who created the text, who did they create the text for and why did they create this text? The audience is who the message is for, and may include a specific age or gender to get the author s purpose across. The rhetorical appeals that might be used by an author to get his or her message across would be appealing to the audiences ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is the perception of credibility, trustworthiness, and characteristics, pathos is the emotional appeal and logos is the perception of logic given off by the author. ... The poem does have mysteries behind it that cannot be answered such as: Who wrote it, when was it written, and how much of the poem is based on historical truth. I also learned that the only copy of the manuscript was written around the 11th century, but the actual poem dates back to the 8th century and the poem was set in an earlier time period of 500 A.D. The poem also includes a lot of references to Christianity, but the characters and setting stem from the Pagan belief. • 3. United States Dollar as Reserve Currency In February of 2011, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) shocked the world by calling for the United States dollar to be replaced as the global world currency (Rooney, 2011). In one report, the world s dirty little monetary secret had been exposed; faith in the US dollar was faltering. Since then, international attitudes toward the US dollar have only gotten worse. With 2013 debt at approximately 105 percent of gross domestic product and a negative outlook rating from Standard s and Poor, the United States is looking like an insolvent bank no one wants to keep their money in. In addition, the dollar has lost 97 percent of its value since being taken off the gold standard in 1971 (Mack, 2011). This makes holding the dollar long term a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While it is said the dollar is now back by the full faith and credit of the United States, this faith and credit is largely treasury bonds, or debt, much of which are held overseas by foreign governments. Ever since the US dollar went off the gold standard in 1971, other countries have had doubts about keeping the dollar as the world s reserve currency. The first concern was that no fiat currency has succeeded long term. In a study of 775 fiat currencies (Mack, 2011), there was no historical precedence for a fiat currency that has succeeded in holding its value. 20 percent failed through hyperinflation, 21 percent were destroyed by war, 12 percent destroyed by independence, 24 percent were monetarily reformed, and 23 percent are still in circulation approaching one of the other outcomes (Mack, 2011). The average life expectancy for a fiat currency is 27 years, with the shortest life span being one month (Mack, 2011). It is one thing if an individual country s fiat currency collapses, but if a world reserve currency collapses, such as the US dollar, the world s economy will collapse with it. Another issue is the dramatic drop in the value in the dollar. As stated earlier, the US dollar has lost 97 percent of its value since being taken off the gold standard in 1971 (Mack, 2011). Not only does a weaker dollar translate into a cut in the real spending power of American consumers, it makes the dollar a very poor investment for investors and central banks around the ... Volkswagen Cause And Effects CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF VOLKSWAGEN COURT SETTLEMENT Although many individuals are unaware of the TDI diesel emissions court settlement between Volkswagen and their customers; there are two causes and several effects. John German discovered the Volkswagen emissions scandal. It turns out that, the lawsuit came about due to cheating software that Volkswagen installed in their 2.0 and 3.0 liter diesel vehicles. In turn, a few effects of the cheating software resulted in a 14.7 billion dollar lawsuit between Volkswagen and their buyers, disappointed customers, and huge inconveniences (Bartlett,2017). Due to the software installed in TDI diesel vehicles, there are up to 11 million vehicles affected. In May of 2014, John German discovered, and went public about the Volkswagen emissions scandal (Kretchmer, 2015). John German is a senior co lead for the International Council on Clean Transportation. Mr. German has worked for the Washington based Environmental Protection Agency for 13 years, which indicates that he knows what the requirements and enforcement are. German partnered with West Virginia University and conducted the ICCT study. During the ICCT study, German noticed detrimental nitrogen oxide emission levels; which leads him to think Volkswagen diesel cars were malfunctioning. German felt vehicles were malfunctioning because they were passing emissions testing, yet the vehicles had up to 35 times permitted levels of nitrogen oxide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Robert Merton s Theory Of The Strain Theory Strain Theory Throughout history many sociologist and criminologist have developed theories to explain crimes in society. Robert Merton was an American sociologist. He believed societies like the United States create deviant citizens because they do not give them the tools to create The American Dream . There are various things that can turn a citizen deviant such as the inability to achieve valued goals, the presence of negative stimuli, and the removal of positive stimuli. A deviant citizen is not always a criminal, deviant citizens are simply defined as someone who goes out of societies norm. The behavior of citizens lead Merton to developed the Strain Theory. This theory explains how the strains of society effect and generate criminal behavior in order to achieve the American Dream. The American Dream is a social construct that has been created through media to promote an acceptable living status. The social status is constantly changing, but overall, it s a reflection of upper middle class and possessing higher education. Countries like the United States have such a great emphasis on wealth, but don t provide the things needed to achieve it. For example, if you attend public schools in a under privileged neighborhood you may not have the funds or opportunity to go to college. Not having a certain level of education can prevent you from jobs which has a ripple effect on your environment and home life. This ripple effect is well known in today s society causing citizens ... • 9. Communist Manifesto By Marx Engels After firstly briefly reading part of communist manifesto from The Marx Engels Reader, I have a general understanding about The Communist Manifesto presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and present) and the problems of capitalism. I am more like concerning on bourgeoisie and proletarians. The reason I interested in this section because it introduces and explains the final conflict between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Tucker (1978) states: The proletariat goes through various stages of development. With its birth begins its struggle with the bourgeoisie. At first the contest is carried on by individual laborers, then by the work people of a factory, then by the operatives of one trade, in one locality, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also presents ways in which the proletariat is a unique class, which is connected with improved communication. The most significant trait of the proletariat is that they have nothing to lose because based on the nature of being proletarians; they have no power at all. What they must do is destroying the entire system. So when there is a revolution, they will destroy the entire system of class exploitation, such as private property. ( The Communist Manifesto, n.d.,) As for this part, he first introduces the idea that economic concerns of a nation, and that the struggle between the rich bourgeoisie and the hard working proletariat would eventually lead to Communism. He then depicts how the bourgeois can always get what they wanted. Marx emphasizes positives that were done by this group, but he certainly seemed consider more on the negatives committed by the bourgeois. He defines the proletarians, or the labor class, and how they were formed, suffered, and what struggles they met. Historically, we can critically say that the proletariat is very particular. Because as the communist manifesto states: in the past, when a class got the upper hand, it tried to subject all of society to its own mode of appropriation. However, the proletariat lacks any property to keep and expand. They must destroy all ways of securing private property. Another key factor of the proletariat is that, while minorities started past movements, the proletariats are a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We use cars for many reasons, some are to run errands, go to a friend s house, or even on a family vacation. Transportation plays a huge role in not only America, but also most of the world. Cars offer fast and reliable hauling from place to place. Technology has led us to cars that emit gasses that harm the environment but have also pushed us to scientifically advance our system into being more energy efficient. Hybrid cars are the alternative solution to solving our problem of global warming. Buying a hybrid isn t just saving you money on gas but it also keeps our planet clean. Every time an automobile burns a gallon of gasoline it releases 22 pounds of carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide is also a damaging greenhouse gas. Cars account for 76 percent of the carbon monoxide in the earth s air. Carbon monoxide affects the bloods total capacity for carrying oxygen to the heart, brain, and other important organs (CEERT). Fuel efficiency isn t just a benefit to saving money; it is a major benefit for the health of everybody. Instead of clogging the air with unhealthy and deadly gasses, we can minimize the health issues that are related to the unhealthy atmosphere. Fuel efficiency is one of the main reasons Americans purchase a new car and with technology advancing each day; we see the trial and error of the modern world evolve. By the automobile technology rising, we haven t just found a solution to our problem but have also created a major problem by polluting the earth. In past years, levels of air, noise, and sight pollution were much lower than they are today. There are more cars on the road today, and because of this we experience higher levels of pollution than before. The automobile is one of the leading suppliers of pollution in our cities. They release toxic emissions into our atmosphere that are affecting not only humans but affecting the world around us. Automobiles are linked particularly to carbon monoxide pollution. ... Wouldn t you want to know whether or not you had it as well, in your genes? Genetic testing allows for people to know if they have a certain genetic disease, if they need to get a certain treatment plan set up, or if there are ways to prevent it from becoming present or visible in the body. Although it is greatly feared that your genetic information will get in the hands of the wrong person, it is now protected by the law. Genetic Discrimination is no longer allowed because both federal and state laws have been made against allowing employers and insurance agents to discriminate you based on a genetic disease you may have. These laws are part of the GINA Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. There are two titles within GINA, Title One prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Health Insurance and Title Two prohibits Genetic Discrimination in Employment. Others may argue that genetic testing is unreliable and does not work to detect genetic diseases in all parts of the body. Among the variety of genetic tests, some yield high rates of false positive and false negative results, while others are characterized by findings that are precise but of uncertain clinical or predictive value (1998, Hastings Center Report, 15 21). • 12. Effective And Rational Priority Setting Of Health... Baltussen et al. (2006, 2010) and Peacock et al. (2009) suggested that MCDA can make a difference in making better and more transparent decision in the setting priorities in health. Baltussen et al. (2006) argued that priority setting in health intervention was often ad hoc and decisions were not optimally made. Instead they suggested implementing MCDA into health intervention decision making since there are many criterias to be considered in the priority setting of health intervention. They illustrated the comparison between ad hoc priority setting and rational priority setting in the following figure. Peacock et al. (2009) stated that MCDA is important because the degree of conflict between criteria, or conflict between different stakeholders regarding the importance of different criteria, is such that intuitive decision making is unsatisfactory (p. 127). However, they suggested using MCDA in health care planning for policy makers, they stated that they did not suggest abandoning the current tools that policy makers used to make decision. Therefore, in this review, I have also included an example from priority setting in health interventions without MCDA as well. Priority setting in health interventions without an application of MCDA González Pier et al. • 13. Community Reflection Paper For the service learning project, I teamed up with three of my classmates to volunteer at a lady s conference at Imani Restoration Centre church (IRCC) on the 16th of September, 2017. IRCC is a non profit organization which is a Kenyan community founded that focuses on bringing African immigrants together to support and learn the things of God. Samuel Mwangi, the senior pastor of IRCC, said that through the counseling sessions that he holds at the church every Thursday, he discovered that most ladies go through the same challenges. Therefore, he thought it would be great for him to organize a lady s conference, so that ladies could come together to share and support each other (Personal communication, September, 16, 2017) The ladies conference was held in the church building, and we were assigned to take care of the children and assist with feeding the congregation. The meeting was starting at 8:00 am; However, we arrived 30 minutes earlier to help with the arrangement of the furniture. The ladies began dropping their kids to the daycare room around 8:15 am. I could not help noticing that most ladies seemed overwhelmed and tired though there was this particular lady who came with tears dripping her face. We were assigned about 35 kids to take care of throughout the conference. The children ages ranged from 3 to 12 years. We assigned the children into groups according to their age. The first group was for ages 3 to 5 the second was for ages 6 to 8, and the third was for ages 9 to 12. We served the kids bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and sausages for breakfast at 9.30 am. I could not help noticing the joy in the kid s faces, and one kid told me that the meal was the best breakfast she ever had. We kept the children engaged with games, Tv shows, and sessions of activities such as storytelling and singing. We also performed some indoor sports which most kids did not want the session to end. The members of the church had supplied the conference with African food, pizza, and drinks for lunch. Most children preferred to eat pizza while the ladies chose to eat the African cuisine. • 19. City Tuition Jacked Up Review of Cyril J. Barker s CUNY tuition jacked up, New York Amsterdam Times, 102(48), 1 35. How might you use the strategies for applying creativity to problems and issues in addressing this topic? There are few solutions, creative or otherwise, available to students in New York City as a result of recent tuition hikes. The decision to increase tuition rates for some New York City s colleges was met with protests, cancellation of classes, and the arrests of hundreds of students and supporters following the announcement. The amount of the tuition increase, about $1,500 a year (a whopping 30 percent increase according to one student interviewed for the article), appears to have been the last straw for many of these protestors who have witnessed their tuition increase time and again in recent years. The tuition hikes were the result of a new law authorizing the increases enacted in 2012 in response to increasing costs at the state s educational institutions. The increases are effective through 2015, and are being imposed statewide. Critics of the tuition hike argue that it is just another step towards the complete privatization of the state s colleges which are being turned into elitist institutions by City University of New York (CUNY) Chancellor Matthew Goldstein. Although the tuition hikes were authorized by the New York state legislature, there were no alternatives to the hike advanced by the legislature or the administrators of the state s colleges. While lack of education and economic barriers are two large factors related to the problem, another crucial factor related to the high rate of STDs in the Bronx is age. For several reasons, adolescents are at a higher risk for developing sexually transmitted diseases and statistically are the population with the highest rate of STDs in the United States. The CDC states The burden of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among people aged 15 24 years accounts for nearly half of all STDs reported in the U.S (CDC, 2015). Adolescents are a vulnerable population as they are undergoing so many changes and this can make them more susceptible to partaking in risky sexual behavior. In the Bronx, adolescents make up the largest population at 25.3% of the total population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2016). The high rate of STDs in adolescents and the large population of adolescents in the Bronx correlates with the high rate of STDs in the Bronx. The Importance Of Serving As A Naval Officer One of the most interesting and, at times, challenging aspects of serving as a Naval Officer is working with a team of people from a diverse background. The sailors I have worked with come from all over the United States, and even some from other countries. While this has led to a rich experience, it sometimes presented a leadership challenge. What I found out quickly was that every sailor approached his or her service in the Navy slightly different. Some sailors served because a relative did, some to pay for college, and some joined to see the world. The more I spoke with sailors, the more I understood the importance for me, as a leader, to not only know the people I was leading, but also to try to understand their perspective. ... What I understand know, after reading Thomas Kuhn s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1996) was that his paradigm about discipline was different from mine. In fact, our paradigms were what Kuhn (1996) describes as incommensurable. The idea of incommensurability accounts for the different way that my commander and I viewed the world (Kuhn, 1996). Our paradigms about discipline were so different that we could not even really have a conversation about it without one of us getting angry or frustrated. At the time I did not understand this concept, and it left me confused about how he could approach a situation in a way that I viewed as harsh and unfair. Eventually, we were able to understand each other, and move forward, and eventually work together to find the best solution to future problems. We came to an understanding that we felt differently sometimes, but began to try to view the situation from each other s point of view. That was just after the civil war, and that was a period of great change for the South. Not only did the South have to quickly extinguish slavery, it changed from agriculture to factories with almost the same pace. The Health belief model provides useful framework for investigating predictors of condom use behaviors among high risk adolescents, whether male or female. For the precaution adoption process, a real world application is eating healthy and exercising to control weight. While an individual may be well aware that he/she has an unhealthy diet, they may lack the motivation to make the necessary changes. Motivation is vital if the precaution adoption model is to be successful. A cross sectional survey among 979 non obese adults, aged 25 35 years, was conducted. Perceived behavioral control was lowest among people who had decided to prevent weight gain, only 85% surveyed intended to prevent weight gain (Wammes, Kremers, Breedveld, amp; Brug, 2013). Acknowledging there is a risk, or potential for risk is great but without motivation the problem/risk will persist and likely get out of hand. The U.S. dollar euro exchange rate in the past was the most analyzed subject studied in global economics. However, any results attempted in studying the dollar euro exchange rate has not been that successful in the past. For this purpose, this paper will discuss where the U.S. dollar euro exchange rate has been in the past, where it is in the present, and where it is expected to be at in the future? Sounds crazy doesn t it? Things like this have actually happened. There are now 68 known cases of homicidal somnambulism. (BBC) . Homicidal somnambulism is the act of murdering someone while in the state of sleepwalking. The legal argument for this has been that the defendant was not in their normal state of mind while this has happened and therefore cannot be blamed for such a crime. Locke is known to believe in his theory of personal identity and diversity. Locke s theory talks about consciousness and how our consciousness makes our identity through our experiences. Locke states that we are only considered guilty of committing a crime if we were aware of it and remember doing it. Although I agree with Locke in some terms regarding our identity having something to do with our consciousness, I do not fully agree. I believe that personal identity is what we see ourselves as whether that be physical features, morals, or anything that crosses those lines. One of the problems that comes to mind with this to me is how could we prove that someone was actually sleepwalking and that they are unaware of their actions. Can we trust them and take their word for it or is there a scientific way in which we can prove it. Locke distinguishes between man and person.
