Pilot Plant Case Study
The U.S. Army facility in Aberdeen known as the Pilot Plant was responsible for endangering
the lives of employees and the surrounding community during the years of 1983 through 1986.
The chemicals used and stored were highly dangerous and lethal to humans. The chemicals were
improperly stored in incorrect locations with improper labels, and leaking barrels. After a roof
collapsed it took two weeks for the chemical spills to be properly dealt with. An acid spill
consisting of 200 gallons spilt into a local river and investigation reported improper storage and
containment equipment. The acts occurred violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
Three engineers were responsible for either overlooking or not caring as to how chemicals within
the facility were stored and maintained. The three engineers were Carl Gepp, William Dee, and
Robert Lentz. The engineers were specialist in chemical weaponry and stated lack of knowledge for
proper containment and storage procedures. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The employees of the plant could have whistle blew and in doing so investigation could have
arose. The investigation could have brought earlier legal action forcing proper storage and facility
standards. Fear of job security could hold someone from blowing the whistle and to avoid this, an
anonymous whistle blowing phone line to an outside agency could have been implemented. This
way no repercussion could arise to the employee. Another implication that could have avoided this
situation is having the engineers take yearly courses updating them on new federal laws and RCRA
regulations. To ensure that internally the matters couldn t be pushed under the rug chemical
facilities could require regular checks to ensure no wrong doing is occurring. This could be done by
having different departments analyzing the safety of other departments and brining this up at daily
or weekly safety

Racial Zoning Research Paper
Distinguished in chapters three and four of The Color of Law, racial zoning is a way for
organizations to manipulate and control what neighborhoods African Americans and other ethnic
minority groups reside in. Due to this, many of African Americans viewed racial zoning as a
serious threat to their well being in the United States. With the help of Jim Crow laws, exclusionary
zoning, and the On Your Own Home campaign, banks and real estate agents had provoked
economic discrimination towards various ethnic minority groups. Furthermore, through the
concepts of dysfunctionalism, social inequality, latent functionalism, and Eurocentrism as seen in
The Real World, racial zoning has negatively affected African Americans from breaking out of what
the world considers them to be.
After the American Civil War, newly freed slaves started... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With this intention, banks and real estate agents will no longer be readily available in urban
communities, but in suburban regions. The reasoning for this stem back to the overall goal of
keeping African Americans separate from whites. Now, however, without banks and real estate
agents, urban communities do not have the same privilege as someone from a suburban household.
This is viewed through the concepts of social inequality and Eurocentrism because of the
unwillingness of whites; there is an unequal distribution of prestige regarding African American
rights. In conclusion, African Americans were targeted for the ideology of racial zoning. Jim Crow
laws, exclusionary zoning, and the On Your Own Home campaign, all helped support this ideology
and furthermore established what concepts simulated these policies. Dysfunctionalism, social
inequality, latent functionalism, and Eurocentrism explain why and what racial zoning

Financial Position of Tesco PLC
Introduction The relevance of evaluating both the financial performance as well as position of
Tesco PLC cannot be overstated. This is more so the case given the need to determine the stability
and viability of the company going forward. This text seeks to evaluate the financial performance as
well as position of Tesco PLC by amongst other things analyzing the entity s financial statements. In
this case, the evaluation will be based on the company s recently published annual accounts.
Tesco PLC: Company Background Yahoo! Finance (2012) describes Tesco PLC as a company
that operates stores that primarily offer food products, as well as general merchandise, clothing
products, and electrical products. In addition to that, Tesco PLC is also involved in the provision
of insurance, financial as well as banking (retail) services (Yahoo! Finance, 2012). Taking into
consideration the number of branches it has in various parts of the world, Tesco PLC can be
regarded one of the largest retailers around the globe. Having been established sometimes in the
year 1919 by Jack Cohen, the company has surely come a long way (Tesco, 2012). The phenomenal
growth of Tesco PLC over time can largely be attributed to both the unwavering vision of the
founder and the selection of a competent team of managers to run the company s operations during
its growth phase. Currently, the company top management team comprises of its CEO Andrew

Remember The Titans Reflection

Remember the Titans is a film based on the true story of Coach Herman Boone, who takes on the
task of integrating a racially divided football team in order to achieve victory. In 1970, the Supreme
Court ruling in Swann v Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education permits busing students to
achieve racial integration in public schools. In 1971, T. C. Williams High Schoolhires successful,
black coach, Herman Boone as head coach to lead the school s newly integrated football team,
depriving Bill Yoast, former head coach and nominee for the Virginia High School Hall of Fame,
of the head coach position. Yoast debates pursuing opportunities elsewhere, but when most of his
white players vow to sit out the season unless he coaches, he changes his mind and stays on as
Boone s assistant and defensive coordinator. Throughout training camp and the season, Boone
and Yoast s black and white players learn to accept each other, to work together, and that football
knows no race. As they learn from each other, Boone and Yoast also learn from them and in turn,
the whole town learns from the team, the Titans. During their practices, black and white football
team members often clash in racial conflicts. The biggest fights occur between the white captain,
whom also acts as the unofficial leader for the white football players, Gerry Bertier, and black
player, whom also acts as the unofficial leader for the black football

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome And Its Effects
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and its Effects

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and its Effects
On a Child s Cognitive Development Alcohol is known as one the most dangerous teratogens.
Every time a pregnant woman drinks, she allows alcohol to enter her blood stream and make its
way into the placenta. Unlike the mother, the fetus is unable to break down alcohol that makes the
blood alcohol level of the fetus the same or higher than the mother (Burk, 2013). Fetal alcohol
syndrome (FAS), and prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are considered some of the most serious
consequences of maternal drinking during pregnancy. Children can exhibit physical abnormalities
such as a flat mid face, a thin upper lip, a smooth groove between the nose and upper lip, along
with growth retardation, and cognitive difficulties. The affected children also have cognitive
difficulties which include intelligence, language, memory, and learning (Wacha Obrzut, 2007). The
term IQ is a derived score that is determined from one of many standardized tests designed to
assess intelligence (Lezak, 2004). Neuropsychological studies have indicated that children with
prenatal alcohol exposure have deficits in general intellectual functions (i.e., their IQ scores are
lower than those of typically developing demographically matched controls) (Mattson, 1998).
Research has been conducted to determine if there is a correlation for IQ deficits

Debate on Taxes Essay
Controversy will always follow humans where ever we go. Humans have argued over many issues
for centuries, often times with no conclusion or correct answer ever in sight. One common issue
that has been debated since the early 1900s is whether or not the more wealthy individuals in a
society should be taxed more heavily than their poorer counterparts. Many have argued over the
pros and cons of the taxationof richer people, but when one looks at it objectively, the pros far
outweigh the cons. Not only do the pros outweigh the cons, but a question one must ask oneself is
whether or not prosperous people really need that extra money? Richer people should be taxed

The encouragement of economic disparity because of these tax cuts is bad for America. The US
should be aiming for more social and economic equality for everybody. Tax cuts can slow down
the economy by putting more money into the wealthy peoples hands and giving less to the
people who need it. Another reason that the wealthy should pay more taxes is because they owe
it to society to do so. Every person wouldn t be where they are today without the people who
helped raise them and the society they were raised in. In The Great Gatsby , Nick Carraway is
disgusted with Tom and Daisy, Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then
retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them
together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made (Fitzgerald 179). Nick is repelled
by how Tom and Daisy, with all of their money, would do nothing to help the society or other
people. Successful people are largely successful due to the society and conditions that they were
raised in. Without the better conditions that they were luckily born into, it is logical to question
just how successful someone in the top one or ten percent could have been. In a recent
commencement speech last summer at Princeton, author Michael Lewis stated Recognize that if
you have had success, you also have had luck and with luck comes obligation. You owe a debt,
and not just to your Gods. You owe a debt to the unlucky . In a

The Nibelung Hero s Journey
A Hero s Journey consists of particularly long trials and tribulations, internally and externally, that
could shape their character into becoming a true hero or one that for all intents and purposes, fails
on their mission. Campbell has designed his own version of that, with set stages of the path that are
central to the model of the heros story. The Ring of the Nibelung is a text written by Richard
Wagner consisting of four operas, one of which is titled The Valkyrie. In the Valkyrie, a character
named Sigmund is introduced to us, and his story follows pretty closely with what Joseph Campbell
defines as a Hero s Journey in his book Pathways to Bliss. In it, he argues that every time someone
is labeled as a hero in a story, there is a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Sigmund s hero s journey, he eventually is sent the child of Signy and Siggeir as his first trial
in order to build up to his eventual goal of killing Siggeir. He kills two sons through testing them,
and finally stumbles upon a third boy ten years later named Sinfiotli. He immediately hits it off
with Sigmund, he has skin as touch as rocks and Sigmund can see his younger self in this child.
Sigmund and Sinfiotli ultimately attempt to murder Siggeir, but are captured and thrown in pit
torture. Once they sneak out of the pit they kill everyone who works in the castle, sparing Signy
only to discover that Sinfiotli is actually the son of Sigmund and Signy. It is at this exact
moment that Sigmund s journey aligns with how Campbell describes apotheosis, where you
realize that you are what you are seeking, he finds out that he has been seeking someone to aid
him in killing Siggeir when he was the one to do it in the end anyway, with his own flesh and
blood son (Campbell 118). Even though the circumstances were somewhat less than ideal,
apotheosis allows Sigmund to discover himself towards the end of his journey; Sinfiotli is
literally Sigmund s offspring, he was the one to help his father kill Siggeir, and he is what
Sigmund was unconsciously seeking. In another compelling example, my mother realized that
what she had spent her time all along doing was searching for herself. In her marriage she thought
she found love but instead found only narcissism and manipulation, driving her to understand that
all she needed to seek in life was herself. She experienced her apotheosis moment as she broke free
and became herself. My mom is what she was seeking, Sigmund is who he was seeking, their
challenging existence led them to the point

Similarities Between Antigone And Thomas King
Society plays a crucial role in everyone s lives as it directs the way one behaves, observes, and
interacts. Antigone and Borders written by Sophocles and Thomas King respectively, demonstrate
the roles and decisions executed by the protagonists according to societal expectations. To briefly
describe, Antigoneis a play set in the ancient Geek era where the protagonist, Antigone, breaks a law
that holds the punishment of death, to give her traitorous brother a respectable funeral. On the
other hand, Borders is a short story set in modern day times where the protagonist, the narrator s

To emphasize, the phrase we had nowhere to go, that neither the Americans nor the Canadians
would let us in indicates that the narrator s mother knows that her decision to drive from border to
border is making the trip difficult not only for herself but her son as well (King 312). Not to
mention, it also illustrates that the mother is trying to dismiss her motherly characteristics like
being nurturing and affectionate and put up a hardened exterior because she wants acceptance for
herself. However, she did express some hope for her son to ensure him that they will gain justice
eventually, which demonstrates that even if she tries to venture out of the societal norms, her
motherly instincts will always be there (King 312). Moreover, it establishes that mother is willing
to push until she gets her way which is again typical of male qualities. Therefore, the violation of
the societal expectations reveals the narrator s mother s strong will to surpass the fear of the
aftermath by not complying to government authorities from two bordering

Characteristics Of A Police Officer
Being employed as a police officer brings a consistent standard of morals and a high degree of
integrity within one self, whilst promoting these same characteristics of other police officers, the
New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF)and the general public. These traits are essential for a
police officer s ability to lead people, this is known as Ethical leadership. Burns (1978) highlights
that a leader s personality will provide the basis of leadership. PoliceOfficers require an ethical
morale while exhibiting preferred behaviours whilst on or off duty. These are necessary to enforce
the organisations policy, State legislation and the officers own Oath of Office (Chandler, 2009). A
leader s behaviour is clear to all with deliberate decisions focusing on an ethical and law abiding
tendency, and not one that can be mistaken for personal gain.
This essay will discuss a number of leadership traits and characteristics that I believe are important
in becoming a first line leader. I will discuss practical leadership strategies that may assist in a

Stereotyping And Prejudice Of Blacks Essay
Over the past few centuries, Blacks have been portrayed as a violent underclass (Hurwitz Peffley,
1997, p. 380). Scholars have reviewed the racial threat theory to illustrate and understand this
phenomenon. It has been argued that Whites are more supportive of punitive sanctions because
they perceive an increasing threat to their economic, political, and social hegemony in the
presence... of large numbers of minorities (Blalock, 1967; Mancini, Mears, Stewart, Beaver, and
Pickett, 2015). The impact of stereotyping and prejudice of Blacks being perceived as threat has
caused many Whites to acquire defensive and demining reactions towards Blacks. The media and
society has a tendency to shy away from or almost ignore the crimeof Whites and instead shift to
highlight the crime of Blacks and minorities. Entman (1992) discovered during a six month
period in Chicago, news reports about Black perpetrators in violent offenses, like homicide,
occurred 84% of the time while 71% of White reported crimes were violent. Another study of a
local news media reporting crime found not only that African Americans were twice as likely as
Whites to be depicted as perpetrators, 6 times more likely to be portrayed as perpetrators than as
law enforcement officers, and overrepresented as criminals, but that they also represent close to
37% of the perpetrators depicted while only totaling one fifth of all arrestees. (T.L. Dixon Linz,

Similarities Between The Tortilla Curtain And Child Dead...
The Tortilla Curtain by T. C. Boyle and Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden by E.L. Doctorow are
similar in some ways and different in others. Tortilla Curtain is a novel that shows how an illegal
immigrant named Candido lives and struggles in America. While living there he went through
many difficulties. The circumstances were having multiple jobs but still being poor, which lead to
him not having a decent home to live in his wife, AmerГca, instead having to live in a campsite.
Also, Candido was injured from a car accident and could not work and lastly, him being an illegal
immigrant was a consequence. Even though he went through these situations, he still stayed in
America just to live his American Dream. Child, Dead in the Rose Garden tells the story of an
illegal alienboy who died and was placed in the White Houserose garden. Detective Molloy
investigates on how he was killed and finds out that he died from an asthma attack caused by
pollution. Since the pollution was caused by the government, daughter of Utilicon s chairman,
Chrissie Stevens dad s business she put the body in the White House to make the public go against
the government. She did this because she wanted to show them for a terse second that America is a

Essay On Cannabinoids
From time to time, people experience stress and anxiety in their life. Stress usually comes about
when undue demand is placed on the mind or body. This demand can cause you to develop

Aldous Huxley view on technology
On this essay we ll discuss the views of Aldous Huxley towards technology, and society in whole.
The impact he had on the people that read his books and our commentary based on his
observations for the future. Huxley was a British writer best known for his novel Brave New World,
written in 1931 and published in 1932. He was concerned of the changes of western civilization at
that time, which would prompt him to write great novels about the serious threats posed by the
combination of power and technical progress. He was also very interested in parapsychology in

Mr. Huxley predicted exactly what we have become. Are we better off? I guess what Mr. Huxley
was referring is; the morality of society is literally non existent.
We changed everything to be more politically correct, we have become a society of non
judgmental individuals for example the people pushing carts in Home Depot used to be called
lot attendants, now they are: lot engineers . I remember being in a lawsuit as a witness for
somebody robing a store. When I accused the robber his lawyer told me not to call him a thief
since the case was not over and was not accuse of any crime yet. He said to call him a non
traditional shopper . I said give me a break!!! The next paragraph will deal with other dangers
that threaten society as a whole: Technology. Mr. Huxley referred the danger of technology as a
dependency of the individual from totalitarian forces. Would he mean that we can one day blow
ourselves up? No not at all. What he was referring to was the use of technology to spy on citizens
for no other reason than to keep track of everybody on this planet. This incredible author had the
audacity to predict exactly what we are facing right now. Let s go back to one of the greatest
tragedy ever perpetuated in this wonderful country of ours. September 11, 2001, otherwise known

Pearl Harbor Accuracy Essay
Pearl Harbor
The movie Pearl Harbor is historically inaccurate because of the fact that it doesn t have a
correct order of events, appropriate weaponry and because of it s usage of props that were
unavailable at the time. First of all in the movie Pearl Harbor, the actual sequence of events that
occured on December 7, 1941 was that the japanese sent two seperate waves of fighter planes to
attack the U.S Naval base of Pearl Harbor. (Memorials) However in the movie Pearl Harbor the
attack on the naval base was depicted as being just a single wave of japanese fighter pilots. This
greatly affects the movies credibility of being historically accurate by providing a false picture of
what happened at the attack of the Naval base.
Also another discrepancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Hughes) As well as in the movie there is a couple scenes that show three guns mounted to each
wing of the fighter plane but really the models of planes at the time only had two mounted on
each wing. (Pearl Harbor) Also another thing wrong with the movie is how the use of korean
vehicles appeared specifically the jeep that the commander is sitting in, the M 80s. The korean
M 80s were invented in around the 1950 s so it could have been around during the attack on Pearl
Harbor. (Jeep) Also another thing that proved to be historically inaccurate in the film was the the
props they used. One being the types of cigarettes they were smoking. The characters from the

The Effect Of Automatic Processes Interfering With...
Whether your mom is telling you a list of chores to do while you are watching your favorite TV
show or studying for an exam in a noisy room, these are common occurrences that may be
affecting you in ways you don t realize. What people may not know is how these instances could
cause hindrances when processing information; this is an underlying problem and has been known
as interference. When you have attention on more than one thing you may be experiencing
interference and this can inhibit cognitive processes. The effects of automatic processes interfering
with controlled processes have been known to have been tested through something called a Stroop
experiment. The revolutionary study by, Stroop (1935) used 5 different colors; purple, brown,
green, blue, and red in a color wordnaming task. Subjects had to say the color of the word while
it was printed in different color ink. For example, the word blue would be written in the color red.
They first did this using the colored words and then repeated the process with the words printed in
black. They found that the colored word condition suggested a 2.3s longer reaction timethan the
black word condition. This is due to the inference of automatic word reading in the color word
condition. Previous research also suggests that there can be interference with the use of the symbol
of an arrow or the written words right and left in an experiment conducted by, Baldo, Shimamura,
and Prinzmetal (1998). Their findings suggested

Essay On Public Schools Vs Private Schools
When raising children and sending them through a schooling system, many parents will take into
consideration sending them to a private school, because the believe that it will provide their child
with a better education and leave them better prepared for the future. A better education comes at a
price, private schools have a high tuition and many parents do not know if it will be worth it in the
end. While private schools and public schools both have the same overall goal of educating young
minds, their teaching methods and curriculum differ in many ways; furthermore, the results that the
schools see in their students are vastly different. One of the most prominent differences between
private and public schools is the curriculum regulations that they have to follow. Public schools
have state regulations set for them that they have to follow that tell teachers what subjects to teach,
what books to have students read, and what tests to give their students. This includes teaching their
students about the controversal theory of evolution. Sara Vitaska, a policy specialist at NCSL, talks
about the importance of the Monkey Trials which put evolution into schools curriculum and how,
That historic ruling... subsequently paved the way for adopting new evolution based science
curriculum policies across the nation. ( Vitaska 24). Private schools, on the other hand, do not have
to follow the state standards. This allows the private schools to create their own curriculum, which

Marketing Strategy For The Chevrolet Tahoe Campaign
O.P.E.N. involves on demand, personal, engaging and networked. Open branding is a brand shifts
its communication platform from traditional to innovative. This novel platform allows customers to
share their thoughts and ideas directly on the marketer s website. With the increase number of new
technologies, customers are no longer interested in traditional market because the traditional market
lacks communication with their customers and this results in lower consumer loyalty for a brand.
Open branding strategy gives the traditional market an opportunity to improve their relationships
with customers. Consumers want to engage more on market today, and they want their voice to be
heard, so many brands shift their strategies to keep their paces in the digital era.
Positive and Negative Aspects of the Chevy Tahoe Campaign Positive aspects. The Chevrolet
Company took a big step forward in its advertising campaign last spring. The company decided to
have a new promotional form which was to run an ad contest that people can post their video clips
about the Chevy Tahoe in its website. The benefit for this approach is to involve people who are
really interested in the company s products in conversation (Rose, 2006). By doing the customer
generated advertising, Chevrolet enhances the relationship with its customers and establishes the
customer loyalty. People can share their thoughts and participate in the communication which

How Pipes Can Help Confirm The Identity Of A Damaged Vessel
Pipes are often found at underwater archaeological sites and can provide valuable information,
regardless of their condition. Broken pipes can provide similar information to those found still
fully intact based on key features, as long as they are still preserved enough to identify. Based on
such key features, the origins of pipes can be traced back to their manufacturers, determining
both where they came from and the time period during which they were made. Because of this,
pipes can be used to help confirm the identity of a wrecked ship; pipes may be from the same
country as the wreck and be used as evidence to support claims of the origin of the ship, or from a
different country or region entirely, indicating some form of trade or... Show more content on

Also, with the ability to date these pipes, it can be possible to date the ship as well. By knowing
the relative date and origin of the ship, and if the pipes can be related to historical documents, there
is potential to positively identify the ship and support the claim.
Mediterranean and Ottoman style pipes are markedly different from their northern European
counterparts, allowing for distinctions to be made between different pipe making traditions. Pipe
smoking, concerning tobacco in particular, was popular within the Balkans, and evidence suggests
that it may have been practiced as early as the end of the sixteenth century (Batchvarov 3).
Conversely, it has also been argued the English introduced tobacco smoking at the start of the
seventeenth century (Batchvarov 3). Stub stemmed or reed pipes were popular in this area, as the
remains of many were found in harbors in the waters of Malta. This style of pipe is commonly
found in association with inhabited areas and trade routes across the Ottoman Empire (Wood 315).
Of these pipes originating from the Mediterranean that were discovered at a site in Dockyard
Creek, Birgu, many had a keel joint between the bowl and shank, a feature which begins in the
late 17th early 18th century (Wood 317). Due to this feature, it is possible to roughly date these
pipes, as they could not be from a time period

Problems With World Bank Hydroelectric Project In Chamoli
World Bank investments in a hydroelectric project in Chamoli, India have led to human rights
violations, debt, and will likely cause increases in utilities costs. In 2015 Human Rights Watch, an
international non governmental organization dedicated to exposing human rights violations, released
the report At Your Own Risk which gave compelling evidence detailing a pattern of reprisals
against critics of World Bankfunded projects. According to the report, residents of Chamoli, as well
as nearby villages, who criticized a World Bank funded hydroelectric project were subject to insults,
intimidation, and threats by employees of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation India Ltd.

Pornography Pros And Cons Essay
No Harm in Moderation: The Benefits of Pornography Pornography, sexual acts designed to draw
arousal from its audience recorded by some medium, is one of the largest industries in America
and on the Internet. Porn having such a prevalent position in society understandably evokes some
anxiety and questions about the harms of participating in the industry as a consumer. Using the
Epicurean belief of reasonable indulgence, I argue that these harms only come with
overindulgence and when used in moderation, pornography offers many personal benefits and
positive contributions to society. My argument will begin with a discussion of Epicureanism and
its beliefs of pleasure as the greatest good and of limiting desires. I will then follow this with
examples of personal and societal pleasures and advantages afforded by pornography when
consumed within reasonable limits. Epicureanism revolves around the pursuit of pleasure and
avoidance of mental and physical pain with pleasure being considered the greatest good and pain
the greatest evil (Stephens 45). Its principles focus upon the naturalness and necessity of desires,
some of which have natural limits; desires without natural limits are considered dangerous as they
can cause anxiety and frustration, however, Epicurus encourages indulging in these limitless desires
on occasion within reason and the law (46 52). If the indulgence is lawful, reasonable, and does not
disrupt society, then there is no ethical problem with anything done

Essay On Antoni Gaudi
Antoni GaudГ, a Catalan architect has become internationally recognized as one of the most
prodigious experts in architecture, as well as the one of the top exponents of modernism.
His exceptional ground breaking genius made him the inventor of a unique and personal
architectural language that defies classification. The work of GaudГ is remarkable for its range of
forms, textures, polychromy and for the free, expressive way in which these elements of his art
seem to be composed. The complex geometries of a GaudГ building so coincide with its
architectural structure that the whole, including its surface, gives the appearance of being a natural
object in complete conformity with nature s laws. Such a sense of total unity also informed the life

The magnificence of Antoni GaudГ s architecture coincided, as the result of a personal decision by

frequented theatres, concerts and tertulias ( social gatherings), went from being a young dandy with
gourmet tastes to neglecting his personal appearance, eating frugally, and distancing himself from

GaudГ died on the 10th of June, 1926, after being knocked down by a tram while making his way,

Carnival Cruise Industry
Introduction The cruise line industry has changed drastically over the past several years. What
was once thought of as a luxury to most people, is now affordable and convenient. The industry
now focuses on targeting the working middle class, as well as the upper class. One cruise line in
particular, Carnival, has mastered the informal cruise for the mass market. Carnival offers
numerous cruises that are inexpensive and exciting. Nevertheless, Carnival operates internationally
with shipyards and ports all over the world. Being an international business, Carnival is affected
by many global forces, both controllable and uncontrollable. In order to maintain the corporation s

Carnival also minimizes staffing costs by sourcing employees on a global basis. The employees are
a key element to ensuring excellent customer service on the boats, therefore, customers will return
satisfied.
International Differences A few international differences affect the operations of cruise lines.
Differences include political/legal, geographic, economic, or sociocultural. Since cruise lines are an
international business, they are affected by these differences. Many cruise lines choose to flag their
vessels in countries that have lower taxes and less stringent employment practices required by the
laws of those countries (The Cruise). However, some governments may choose to subsidize the ship
industry in order to secure contracts for their domestic firms. Many ships are built in order to be
appealing to the eye, but with cruise ships going to so many different places, they have to be
designed not only to accommodate the economic reality of the mass market, but also the cultural
preferences of the clientele. Carnival designed seasonal cruises that sail to different destinations.
The themes chosen are based on the locations the ship will be travelling to. Also, buffet options
are available in order to provide a variety of food options for the customers and avoid cultural
preferences.
International Sales Effective marketing is crucial when selling cruises internationally. The majority
of customers who board of a cruise ship are men and women from 18 50

The Stereotypical Portrayal Of Women
To young college aged women: The stereotypical portrayal of women in media is a problem that
needs to be understood and solved. This problem is often overlooked because it is encompassing
a lot to deal with. Women are used as sexual objects in the media everywhere, and we need to
understand how to deal with the issue. A large source of media that is used are advertisements,
which are everywhere in our daily lives. These advertisements can make women feel degraded
and objectified. Young women see media of models portraying these beautiful standards that are
unrealistic and lead to eating disorders and negative implications. Girls grow up seeing media all
over and learning the stereotypical roles of women which are considered the norm. No father
wants to see his little girl grow up feeling like she has to conform to the roles of women. In the
article, Two Ways a Woman

pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women... (420) Jean
Kilbourne compares advertisements to pornography which makes us realize it s a large problem
going on that needs to be solved. In the media women are also shown as typical house moms
who clean, cook and stay home. This is a stereotype of women that has been around for a long

The Similarities and Differences of King Arthur and Lord Bercilak
There are similarities between every ideal and thought imaginable. There are also notable
differences between the infintant ideals, tangible or not. The comparisons can seem unlikely
however are still comparable and contrastable. Likewise Arthurian characters are closers than they
seem at first look. King Arthur and Lord Bercilak compare and and contrast through their ways of
hospitalities, principles, and religious views.
Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak show immense amounts of hospitalities to the guest whom of
which enter their castle. As stated, As King Arthur s court feasts on New Year s Day, a mysterious
Green Knight appears offering a strange challenge (Alex). Clearly Arthur feeds anyone who entered
the castle. Also welcomed all guest with great gesture, just like he showed to the Green Knight. For
Bercilak it is stated that, Bercilak will exchange anything he captures hunting with anything Gawain
receives while staying in the castle (The Natural). He gave food in return for his wife s gifts
which shows that he was willing to feed Sir Gawain. Also he gave shelter to Gawain when he
could have easily rejected the knight. Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak are proven hospitable by
nature.
Both the King and the Lord keep their responsibilities and show their principles. In the book Morte
D Arthur Sir Malory wrote, The the king got his spear in both his hands and ran towards Sir
Mordred, crying and saying, Traitor, now thy deathday has come! (Malory 189). During the time
of King Arthur killing rebels would be considered the duty of a king. Also he shows the principle
of keeping his kingdom intact with his citizens from falling into slavery, which would have
inevitably happened if Sir Mordred had taken rule of the realm of Arthur. Likewise stated by
Morpurgo, The Knight strikes, only nicking Gawain, then reveals himself as Bertilak, admitting that
he arranged the attempted seduction as a test of Gawain s virtue (Morpurgo). Lord Bercilak
committed his part of the deal without killing Gawain. Also teaching knights and showing them

Theory Of The Principle Agent Problem
In American politics, there are multiple examples of the phenomena known as the principle agent
problem. A principle agent problem is when a person (the principal) hires another person (the
agent) to perform a job that the principle cannot do themselves. However, the agent in these
situations may go against the wishes of the principle for their own benefit, making the whole
exchange a risk for the principle. In everyday life, an example of a principle agent problem is
when a person hires a mechanic. They hire a mechanic because they don t have the knowledge, or
the ability, to do the job. Unfortunately, the mechanic is aware of this, and may try to get more
compensation by charging for more than is actually required. In the American political system, a
specific example of the principle agent is the relationship between the heads of the Central
Intelligence Agencyand the agents they employ.
In an arrangement between the Central Intelligence Agency and an agent that they wish to hire, the
CIA compensates the agent with the expectation that the agent will perform their required task, act
covertly, and protect the United States of America. However, the agent may defect by giving other
nations information that they deem is important, or acting in some other way that may compromise
our country, so that the defecting agent could receive some sort of compensation. Although
defectors are rather rare (as far as we know), when an agent does defect, it has serious consequences

Examples Of Realism In Maggie A Girl Of The Streets
The aim of this essay is to present the cultural models of realism and naturalism in Stephen s Crane
novella Maggie. A girl of the streets.
Another aim of this paper is to support the idea that Stephen Crane portrays in his novella life just
at it is.
The main concepts of this essay are realism and naturalism.
American realism is characterized through verisimilitude of detail, effort to approach the norm of
experience, greater diversity in subject matter and tries to move away from romance and self
creating fictions. (American Literature lecture)
Naturalism describes a type of literature that attempts to apply scientific principles of objectivity
and detachment to its study of human beings. The naturalist novel describes his characters in relation
with their environment, heredity, instinct or chance. (http://public.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit

struggles that Maggie has to face in her attempt to escape from her life.
A realist novel focuses also on the social class. (http://public.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/realism.htm)
In Crane s book we are presented with the life of lower class families that live in a tenement. The
accent is put on Maggie s family and the relations between them. Maggie is the only one that tries
to escape from the poverty and bad living conditions. She sees Pete as a new beginning for her,
even though she thought that he was more superior than her. Maggie believed that he was the beau

drawbacks in my communication skill enhancement is that I don t think it works well in UK, in
this multicultural university I have struggled to communicate effectively with students and

dancing and swirling. In the room there was an antique bed supported by thin rusted iron bars and
an electric generator.
Gage laid down on the fluffy bed next to the bloodless corpse. A graveolent rot odor diffused in
the air. The thin walls were covered with patterned broken to pieces wallpaper. It was a large
room, were you could feel the dark force of something. Perhaps they are spirits. Pictures on walls
stared at you menacingly. Demian tied his legs and hands. He got his razor sharp instrument and
barbarically cut through the scalp. Gage screamed louder than a freight train. A red crimson liquid
splurted out like a bomb from the head.
Demian removed the viscous pink brain and fed the brain to his monstrous, abnormal creature. In
one bite, the amorphous creature ate the brain. The brain removed from the dead corpse started to
pump. In a glimpse of time, the cruel creature ate the brain. This bizarre individual grew bigger
and bigger. The evil spirit

Flossing Informative Speech
Most of us know that brushing and flossing go hand in hand when it comes to good oral health.
Brushing with a minty toothpaste makes our mouths feel fresh so it s easy to remember to
include it in our daily routine; but flossing is often an afterthought if it s a thought at all. If you
visit your dental clinic in Frisco TX twice a year for your checkups, your dentist or hygienist
likely asks if you re remembering to floss and you know you usually answer yes even though you
really can t remember the last time you did it. What s the big deal with flossing? Is it really that
important? Dental plaque is basically a biofilm made up of the bacteria that live in your mouth.
The film adheres to your teeth and gums. When you feed the bacteria carbohydrates, like those
found in sugar, milk, soft drinks, candy and cake, they not only multiply faster, they produce an
acid that leads to tooth decay and gum disease. When you visit your dental clinic in Frisco TX,
they will tell you that the longer this acidic plaque remains on your teeth, the more likely you ll
develop cavities or gum disease. They ll also tell you how important it is to remove as much of
this plaque film as possible with thorough brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day....

The key to flossing is taking the time to do it right and reach all the areas you need to reach. In
fact, how well you floss is more important than when you floss although the commonly held
wisdom that flossing before bed is best is probably, well, best. During the night, the saliva we
produce that washes away bacteria is reduced so a nice, clean mouth is a good thing to go to sleep

The World War I At The Time Known As The Great War
World War I, at the time known as the Great War, was a global war that happened mainly in
Europe where the Allied Powers, formed mainly by France, Great Britain, and Russia, were against
the Central Powers, formed by Germany, Austria Hungary, Italy, and the Ottoman Empire. Someone
who doesn t have a thorough knowledge about the War would be quick to say the causes were
economical or ideological or that the direct cause was the death of Franz Ferdinand of Austria
Hungary but it is more complicated than that. Franz Ferdinand s death was nothing more than a
detonator. Although some, like the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel and the American steel
manufacturer Andrew Carnegie, did an effort to promote peace dark clouds were long suspected to

Militarism, on the other hand, is the belief or wish of a government or people that a country
should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or
promote national interests. During this time European countries increased their military might far
beyond what was necessary for a strong national defense; a large standing army symbolized
power. This made easy for a government to immediately use the force when any dispute broke
among nations. Finally was the Slavic brotherhood between Russia and Serbia. They have
common ancestry and origin. Russia responded to that bond by backing up Serbia. This is very
important because if Russia wouldn t have joined the war, it would have been only between Austria
Hungary with Germany s support and Serbia.
The main economical causes were the second industrial revolution and the Balkan Wars. The
second industrial revolution brought a rise in the economy due to all the new inventions and
discoveries. One of the most important was the petroleum industry which begun in Scotland in the
late 1840s. Also, the increase in steel production meant that rails could be built at a better price and
with a much more durable material. This revolution brought the increase in many technologies used
in World War Ilike the gas bombs which would burn the lungs of whoever inhaled it.

No Bevan, No Nhs 1986
No Bevan, No NHS 1986
The 5th July 1948, marked the end of of a tireless and extremely ambitious movement to bring
satisfactory health care to each and every resident of the United Kingdom. It was on this date that
Park Hospital in Manchester, was opened by the then health secretary Aneurin Bevan. Opticians,
dentists, pharmacists, nurses and doctors were for the first time brought together, under one
umbrella organisation, to provide services that are free for all at the point of delivery (nhs.uk, 2015)
The Second World War had left a considerable impact, in its wake homelessness, disease and
casualties. Directly, it had led to the establishment of an Emergency Medical Service. Its task was
to oversee the treatment of civilian bombing casualties. At this point, existing authorities such as
local councils, ran the hospitals. This was within a regional framework, with each role being
decided on by the Ministry of Health. The war however did not create new welfare services, but it
did create the political will to change the basis on which these services were offered (Webster,
2001) Comprehensive proposals were further pushed forward by the publication of the Beveridge
Report in 1942 on Social Insurance and Allied Services. It identified the main issues that were
faced by British society and endorsed the idea of a comprehensive health service. Two years later,
the White Paper, A National Health Service(February 1944) was published. The paper summarised

The Wide Spread Problem Of Graffiti Culture
Graffiti art is a world wide spread problem, it does not just occur in one part of the world. As
stated, Professor Snyder, 40, argues that while graffiti culture emerged around the same time as
hip hop, in the early 1970s, graffiti in fact comes from a variety of cultural sources (Chan, 2009,
p.1). For a fact, it is not a specific type of person doing it either, these petty crimes. It could be
anyone around you: Whatever their class, race, ethnicity religion, or age, writers define themselves
not by what they look like, or what language they speak, or what clothes they wear, but by what
they do. Their identities are as writers first, and as members of ethnic, religious, and other
subgroups second (Chan, 2009, P.1).
In the beginning it was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Or why would someone draw that. For example, [f]or many who catch sight of a tag or a mural
on a wall, their glance leads quickly to speculation as to why someone wrote that word or drew an
image in such a place (Halsey Young, 2006, p.3). Many questions asked and are only answered by,
[t]he sociality of shared peer activity is another important reason why writers are attracted to graffiti
culture ( Halsey Young, 2006, p.4). Academic writing on graffiti has approached it in a number
of ways, encompassing its analysis as sociological subculture, as juvenile delinquency, as a
historical phenomenon and as a regulatory problem (Halsey Young, 2006, p.2). There is said that
many young adults like to do graffiti art because it causes a rush through there body they get. A
reaction that feels good enough for them to express themselves over graffiti. A theory was
shared, [b]roken windows theory, which holds that low level and petty crimes, if not addressed,
create an atmosphere conductive to more serious and violent crimes (Chan, 2009, p.2). Many
believe if they do not stop crimes young or discipline kids at a young age it cause more violent
people in the future. Graffiti is not just a crime in many ways it is more than people see it as just
like shared, I m not trying to make an argument that graffiti is art and not vandalism, Professor
snyder said in a phone interview, I hope I ve made it clear that it s both (Chan, 2009, p.2). [t]he

spaces, with other criminal activities (Halsey Young, 2006, p.2). Every empty place is a new

The Change of the Rights and Freedoms of Australian Women...
The Change of The Rights and Freedoms of Australian Women Over The Past 100 Years
The progression of the rights and freedoms of women has changed drastically over the past 100
years. Women have felt the need to stand up for their rights and change the traditional stereotype
of women from, weak and unambitious to strong and determined beings. There were two main
time periods where their rights were recognized throughout Australia. The first took place in the
early 20th century, where women rallied for the rights to vote and stand for elections. The second
took place in the 1960s and 1970s, when traditional roles of women were challenged. The third
aspect that will also be looked at in this essay, are influential women in the two time ... Show more

Women wanted to pursue jobs that were mostly pursued by men. In 1986, The Equal Opportunity
for Women Act restricted barriers, which prohibited women from pursuing jobs that should be
available to them.
There were many females in Australia who were activists and believed that Australian women
needed to be more confident and believe that they were capable of performing male superior jobs.
Edith Cowan was the first woman elected to an Australian Parliament in Western Perth, Western
Australia in the year 1921. Women from different states were inspired by Cowan and in
Queensland, Irene Longman was the first woman to be elected in the Queensland parliament in
1929. In 1937, Ivy Webber represented the League of Women Electors on a platform of Mother,
Child, Family, Home and Health. This is because Webber believed that women needed help with
motherhood, children, family, marital problems, home and health. In 1972, Helen Reddy
produced a song called I am Woman . The song became the unofficial anthem of the WLM as
well. The United Nations declared that it was International Woman s Year in 1975. Many women
went to extremes to protest for their rights. Zelda D Aprano chained herself to the
Commonwealth building in 1969 in Melbourne as a sign of protest for the equal pay of working
women. In 2004, D Aprano was made the officer of the order of Australia as acknowledgement for

Essay On Postoperative Pain
Discussion
Postoperative pain is the most undesired sequence of surgery, and if not treated properly, can lead
to increased hospital stay and delayed return to daily activities (10).
The management of postoperative pain has received much interest nowadays. The intensity of
postoperative pain depends on many factors such as type and duration of the surgery, type of
anesthesia and analgesia used, and the patient s mental and emotional status (11).
Local wound infiltration is an attractive method since it is efficacious and adverse actions are
minimal (12). However, this route is limited by the fact that duration of analgesia is limited to the
duration of action of local anesthetic. Efforts are being made to increase the duration of action of ...

Also, Koputan MH etal 2012(9) stated that wound infiltration in functional endoscopic sinus
surgery and septorhinoplasty with tramadol 0.5 mg/kg provided better analgesia and a statistically
significant decrease in postoperative fentanyl demand and consumption than did levobupivacaine or
lidocaine local infiltration. In addition, Ozyilmaz K etal 2012(15) assessed wound infiltration with
saline, levobupivacaine, tramadol or tramadol plus levobupivacaine in lumbar disc surgeries. They
observed that the time to first analgesia was earliest in saline group, followed by levobupivacaine
group then tramadol group. None of the patients in tramadol plus levobupivacaine group required
postoperative analgesic supplementation, and the visual analog scale scores were 3 at all
measurement times and this may be attributed to high levobupivacaine dose (100 mg) which is
double of our study.
Moreover, Albayrak M etal 2013(16) studied the effect of local wound infiltration with saline,
levobupivacaine or tramadol before the closure of the wound edges after cesarean delivery and
revealed that tramadol

My Visit At The Huntington Museum Of Art
The first thing I noticed at the Huntington Museum of Art was how quiet and empty it was. This
was not displeasing however quite the opposite in fact. The atmosphere was perfect for
contemplation and thought, which is exactly what I want in a museum. I was still surprised of
course; my visit to the Art Institute of Chicagohad been very different. Unlike in Huntington,
Chicago s museum was packed to the brim, and the people within it practically shouting just to
be heard. It is very easy to decide which one I liked more, in terms of surroundings anyway. As I
walked along, my footsteps echoing, I could not help but feel like there was something missing.
The art was perfectly fine, but there was a lack of liveliness to the place, something that Chicago
had in spades. I remember noticing that the art only had names, and no descriptions. This was
something I disliked extremely. It is nice to look at images I suppose, but I want some history. I
want the time period, and a description of the artist, two things that play a huge role in what a
paintingis actually about. I felt like I should just naturally understand what each pieceof art was
trying to describe to me, which was an irritating feeling.
It only took me about twenty minutes to go through the entire museum. Nothing really drew me in,
except for a couple of pieces. This was entirely different from my visit to the Art Institute of
Chicago. There, almost everything drew me in. All the paintings, and especially some of

The Cask Of Amontillado, Good Country People, And The Lottery
The dark side of human nature has been present throughout the course of life as illustrated in The
Cask of Amontillado, Good Country People, and The Lottery. The darkness is a predominant
theme as expressed by a few character traits throughout the short stories. Humans have been
responsible for acts of care and compassion, yet the dark side of humannature overcomes them
through the themes of pride, self preservation, and deception which throughout the short stories
gives evidence of the dark side of human nature.
Pride has built the characters up and blinded them to the point where they undertake horrible
actions. Pride has corrupted and transformed the nature of the characters as expressed by Montresor
when he introduces his desire for vengeance against Fortunato, The ... Show more content on

The Zookeeper s Wife
The opening scene of the Zookeeper s Wife is vital in establishing the binary between the oasis
of the zoo before the war and the destruction the war brings. Natural sunlight fills the first scene
of the film and green is a common color found throughout the zoo. The first scene oozes natural
beauty and signifies the life that occupies it. The zoo seems almost too perfect, like it could not
possibly be a creation of man, but of one gifted from the heavens. The zoo begins as the Garden of
Eden in the midst of Poland, but as the war erupts, it mimics the original sin, destroying the zoo
turning its sanctuary into a thing of the past. The ash from the ghettos covers the zoo and literally
represents destruction of not only the ghetto but, the former

Asian Immigrants
Asians in the United States
The United States is a place known for welcoming everybody. It is a place where everyone can
come from all over the world and no matter how many problems they have, no matter how many
struggles they have been through or what their religion or culture is, they can succeed and have a
better life in the land of Uncle Sam. Immigration to the U.S. has been through different stages
where in the beginning European came seeking freedom to practice their religion and culture
without oppression. Then that was followed by people immigrating to the United States from all
over the world. In the most recent years, Asians were the majority of those immigrants. Asians

(Gonsoulin and Fu, 258). Intermarriage percent increased from 0.7 percent in 1970 to 5.4 percent

30 and 60 percent with Asian women being more likely to marry out that men (Gonsoulin and Fu,

Analysis Of The Poem The Yacoubian Building
The Yacoubian Building, like many novels in the vein of historical fiction, contextualizes factual
events through characterization and symbolism. Set in post Nasser modern Egypt, the reader is
introduced to a number of characters a wealthy, promiscuous engineer; a young woman down on
her luck; a boy turned quickly to fundamentalist attitudes just to name a few. These characters and
their escapades provide more than just entertainment for the reader, however. Al Aswany uses the
characters in his novel to illuminate the psychological, social, and emotional effects of Egyptian
political history. Much like liberal Egypt, Nasser s reign and the Arab Socialist movement was
filled with idealism and promise, both of which gave way to corruption and greed. One can easily
find economic statistics or political articles detailing the objective inadequacies of Nasser, Sadat,
and their successors. Al Aswany brings a different, equally valuable narrative. This novel fills in the
gaps of objective and factual histories, allowing the reader to understand the personal and emotional
response to seminal events in Egyptian history. The personal truly is the political, and The
Yacoubian Building exemplifies that statement. Before discussing the characters and their roles,
one must first look at the setting. The vast majority of the novel takes place in the actual Yacoubian
Building, the former paramount of Egyptian liberalism. The cream of society of those days took up
residence in the

Life And Death That Polish Literature
Writing thrives as a favorable way of expressing one s ideas and beliefs. Sharing one s thoughts
on paper has always been part of the role of being a writer; it serves a purpose of writing a
reflection of one s personal thoughts and opinions. From the Medieval era to the Renaissance era,
Poland is remarked as a period of change. Poland was expanding as a country and many political
events were occurring. During this span of time, Polish literature signifies various changes in its
themes, beliefs and language all constituted with a purpose. The theme of life and death overpowers
Polish literature written during these two eras. Two pieces that demonstrate an experience of death
and how the author s worldview comes through the text are Jan... Show more content on

The piece that demonstrates a wide scope of his worldview is Laments. Jan Kochanowski
expresses his despair and emotions after the loss of his child in the form of treny. Treny are an
older style of writing that praise the life and accomplishments of those who passed, especially
well known figures. Kochanowski s Laments can be distinguished from the typical treny for the
sole reason that the subject is a child instead of a famous or intellectual individual. However, the
main character in Laments is Kochanowski himself. He plays the role of a grieving father and
author who struggles to find the value and trust in any philosophy, religion and life itself after his
daughter s death disrupted his reality. In the article Why We Write About Grief, Oates explains that
Grief is the most humane of emotions but it is a one sided emotion; it is not reciprocated. This is
exactly what makes Laments credible for the Kochanowski s worldview through death. He
experienced it himself as a parent; one cannot simply understand how it feels to lose a child. It is
not a typical telling of a story about death; it is the dark emotions of a mourning father. Throughout
the Laments, Kochanowski intertwines the theme of searching ways to relieve pain and his bitter
reflection on death. Specifically, he expresses a rebellion against death.

  • 2. Pilot Plant Case Study The U.S. Army facility in Aberdeen known as the Pilot Plant was responsible for endangering the lives of employees and the surrounding community during the years of 1983 through 1986. The chemicals used and stored were highly dangerous and lethal to humans. The chemicals were improperly stored in incorrect locations with improper labels, and leaking barrels. After a roof collapsed it took two weeks for the chemical spills to be properly dealt with. An acid spill consisting of 200 gallons spilt into a local river and investigation reported improper storage and containment equipment. The acts occurred violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Three engineers were responsible for either overlooking or not caring as to how chemicals within the facility were stored and maintained. The three engineers were Carl Gepp, William Dee, and Robert Lentz. The engineers were specialist in chemical weaponry and stated lack of knowledge for proper containment and storage procedures. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The employees of the plant could have whistle blew and in doing so investigation could have arose. The investigation could have brought earlier legal action forcing proper storage and facility standards. Fear of job security could hold someone from blowing the whistle and to avoid this, an anonymous whistle blowing phone line to an outside agency could have been implemented. This way no repercussion could arise to the employee. Another implication that could have avoided this situation is having the engineers take yearly courses updating them on new federal laws and RCRA regulations. To ensure that internally the matters couldn t be pushed under the rug chemical facilities could require regular checks to ensure no wrong doing is occurring. This could be done by having different departments analyzing the safety of other departments and brining this up at daily or weekly safety ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Racial Zoning Research Paper Distinguished in chapters three and four of The Color of Law, racial zoning is a way for organizations to manipulate and control what neighborhoods African Americans and other ethnic minority groups reside in. Due to this, many of African Americans viewed racial zoning as a serious threat to their well being in the United States. With the help of Jim Crow laws, exclusionary zoning, and the On Your Own Home campaign, banks and real estate agents had provoked economic discrimination towards various ethnic minority groups. Furthermore, through the concepts of dysfunctionalism, social inequality, latent functionalism, and Eurocentrism as seen in The Real World, racial zoning has negatively affected African Americans from breaking out of what the world considers them to be. After the American Civil War, newly freed slaves started... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this intention, banks and real estate agents will no longer be readily available in urban communities, but in suburban regions. The reasoning for this stem back to the overall goal of keeping African Americans separate from whites. Now, however, without banks and real estate agents, urban communities do not have the same privilege as someone from a suburban household. This is viewed through the concepts of social inequality and Eurocentrism because of the unwillingness of whites; there is an unequal distribution of prestige regarding African American rights. In conclusion, African Americans were targeted for the ideology of racial zoning. Jim Crow laws, exclusionary zoning, and the On Your Own Home campaign, all helped support this ideology and furthermore established what concepts simulated these policies. Hrencher Kansas State University Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and its Effects On a Child s Cognitive Development Alcohol is known as one the most dangerous teratogens. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), and prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are considered some of the most serious consequences of maternal drinking during pregnancy. Children can exhibit physical abnormalities such as a flat mid face, a thin upper lip, a smooth groove between the nose and upper lip, along with growth retardation, and cognitive difficulties. The affected children also have cognitive difficulties which include intelligence, language, memory, and learning (Wacha Obrzut, 2007). The term IQ is a derived score that is determined from one of many standardized tests designed to assess intelligence (Lezak, 2004). Neuropsychological studies have indicated that children with prenatal alcohol exposure have deficits in general intellectual functions (i.e., their IQ scores are lower than those of typically developing demographically matched controls) (Mattson, 1998). Humans have argued over many issues for centuries, often times with no conclusion or correct answer ever in sight. One common issue that has been debated since the early 1900s is whether or not the more wealthy individuals in a society should be taxed more heavily than their poorer counterparts. Many have argued over the pros and cons of the taxationof richer people, but when one looks at it objectively, the pros far outweigh the cons. Not only do the pros outweigh the cons, but a question one must ask oneself is whether or not prosperous people really need that extra money? Richer people should be taxed higher because it is better for the economy, social classes will... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The encouragement of economic disparity because of these tax cuts is bad for America. The US should be aiming for more social and economic equality for everybody. Tax cuts can slow down the economy by putting more money into the wealthy peoples hands and giving less to the people who need it. Another reason that the wealthy should pay more taxes is because they owe it to society to do so. Every person wouldn t be where they are today without the people who helped raise them and the society they were raised in. In The Great Gatsby , Nick Carraway is disgusted with Tom and Daisy, Tom and Daisy they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made (Fitzgerald 179). Nick is repelled by how Tom and Daisy, with all of their money, would do nothing to help the society or other people. Successful people are largely successful due to the society and conditions that they were raised in. Without the better conditions that they were luckily born into, it is logical to question just how successful someone in the top one or ten percent could have been. • 11. The Nibelung Hero s Journey A Hero s Journey consists of particularly long trials and tribulations, internally and externally, that could shape their character into becoming a true hero or one that for all intents and purposes, fails on their mission. Campbell has designed his own version of that, with set stages of the path that are central to the model of the heros story. The Ring of the Nibelung is a text written by Richard Wagner consisting of four operas, one of which is titled The Valkyrie. In the Valkyrie, a character named Sigmund is introduced to us, and his story follows pretty closely with what Joseph Campbell defines as a Hero s Journey in his book Pathways to Bliss. In Sigmund s hero s journey, he eventually is sent the child of Signy and Siggeir as his first trial in order to build up to his eventual goal of killing Siggeir. He kills two sons through testing them, and finally stumbles upon a third boy ten years later named Sinfiotli. He immediately hits it off with Sigmund, he has skin as touch as rocks and Sigmund can see his younger self in this child. Sigmund and Sinfiotli ultimately attempt to murder Siggeir, but are captured and thrown in pit torture. Once they sneak out of the pit they kill everyone who works in the castle, sparing Signy only to discover that Sinfiotli is actually the son of Sigmund and Signy. It is at this exact moment that Sigmund s journey aligns with how Campbell describes apotheosis, where you realize that you are what you are seeking, he finds out that he has been seeking someone to aid him in killing Siggeir when he was the one to do it in the end anyway, with his own flesh and blood son (Campbell 118). Even though the circumstances were somewhat less than ideal, apotheosis allows Sigmund to discover himself towards the end of his journey; Sinfiotli is literally Sigmund s offspring, he was the one to help his father kill Siggeir, and he is what Sigmund was unconsciously seeking. In another compelling example, my mother realized that what she had spent her time all along doing was searching for herself. In her marriage she thought she found love but instead found only narcissism and manipulation, driving her to understand that all she needed to seek in life was herself. She experienced her apotheosis moment as she broke free and became herself. My mom is what she was seeking, Sigmund is who he was seeking, their challenging existence led them to the point ... However, she did express some hope for her son to ensure him that they will gain justice eventually, which demonstrates that even if she tries to venture out of the societal norms, her motherly instincts will always be there (King 312). Scholars have reviewed the racial threat theory to illustrate and understand this phenomenon. The impact of stereotyping and prejudice of Blacks being perceived as threat has caused many Whites to acquire defensive and demining reactions towards Blacks. The media and society has a tendency to shy away from or almost ignore the crimeof Whites and instead shift to highlight the crime of Blacks and minorities. Entman (1992) discovered during a six month period in Chicago, news reports about Black perpetrators in violent offenses, like homicide, occurred 84% of the time while 71% of White reported crimes were violent. Another study of a local news media reporting crime found not only that African Americans were twice as likely as Whites to be depicted as perpetrators, 6 times more likely to be portrayed as perpetrators than as law enforcement officers, and overrepresented as criminals, but that they also represent close to 37% of the perpetrators depicted while only totaling one fifth of all arrestees. When you have attention on more than one thing you may be experiencing interference and this can inhibit cognitive processes. The effects of automatic processes interfering with controlled processes have been known to have been tested through something called a Stroop experiment. The revolutionary study by, Stroop (1935) used 5 different colors; purple, brown, green, blue, and red in a color wordnaming task. Subjects had to say the color of the word while it was printed in different color ink. For example, the word blue would be written in the color red. They first did this using the colored words and then repeated the process with the words printed in black. They found that the colored word condition suggested a 2.3s longer reaction timethan the black word condition. This is due to the inference of automatic word reading in the color word condition. Pornography Pros And Cons Essay No Harm in Moderation: The Benefits of Pornography Pornography, sexual acts designed to draw arousal from its audience recorded by some medium, is one of the largest industries in America and on the Internet. Porn having such a prevalent position in society understandably evokes some anxiety and questions about the harms of participating in the industry as a consumer. Using the Epicurean belief of reasonable indulgence, I argue that these harms only come with overindulgence and when used in moderation, pornography offers many personal benefits and positive contributions to society. My argument will begin with a discussion of Epicureanism and its beliefs of pleasure as the greatest good and of limiting desires. I will then follow this with examples of personal and societal pleasures and advantages afforded by pornography when consumed within reasonable limits. Epicureanism revolves around the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of mental and physical pain with pleasure being considered the greatest good and pain the greatest evil (Stephens 45). Its principles focus upon the naturalness and necessity of desires, some of which have natural limits; desires without natural limits are considered dangerous as they can cause anxiety and frustration, however, Epicurus encourages indulging in these limitless desires on occasion within reason and the law (46 52). Since cruise lines are an international business, they are affected by these differences. Many cruise lines choose to flag their vessels in countries that have lower taxes and less stringent employment practices required by the laws of those countries (The Cruise). However, some governments may choose to subsidize the ship industry in order to secure contracts for their domestic firms. Many ships are built in order to be appealing to the eye, but with cruise ships going to so many different places, they have to be designed not only to accommodate the economic reality of the mass market, but also the cultural preferences of the clientele. Carnival designed seasonal cruises that sail to different destinations. The themes chosen are based on the locations the ship will be travelling to. Also, buffet options are available in order to provide a variety of food options for the customers and avoid cultural preferences. International Sales Effective marketing is crucial when selling cruises internationally. The majority of customers who board of a cruise ship are men and women from 18 50 ... This problem is often overlooked because it is encompassing a lot to deal with. Women are used as sexual objects in the media everywhere, and we need to understand how to deal with the issue. A large source of media that is used are advertisements, which are everywhere in our daily lives. These advertisements can make women feel degraded and objectified. Young women see media of models portraying these beautiful standards that are unrealistic and lead to eating disorders and negative implications. Girls grow up seeing media all over and learning the stereotypical roles of women which are considered the norm. No father wants to see his little girl grow up feeling like she has to conform to the roles of women. In the article, Two Ways a Woman can get Hurt, Jean Kilbourne states, sex in advertising is pornographic because it dehumanizes and objectifies people, especially women... Chandler Ferguson Ms.Morris Advanced English 12 5th period December 5, 2017 The Similarities and Differences of King Arthur and Lord Bercilak There are similarities between every ideal and thought imaginable. There are also notable differences between the infintant ideals, tangible or not. The comparisons can seem unlikely however are still comparable and contrastable. Likewise Arthurian characters are closers than they seem at first look. King Arthur and Lord Bercilak compare and and contrast through their ways of hospitalities, principles, and religious views. Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak show immense amounts of hospitalities to the guest whom of which enter their castle. As stated, As King Arthur s court feasts on New Year s Day, a mysterious Green Knight appears offering a strange challenge (Alex). Clearly Arthur feeds anyone who entered the castle. Also welcomed all guest with great gesture, just like he showed to the Green Knight. For Bercilak it is stated that, Bercilak will exchange anything he captures hunting with anything Gawain receives while staying in the castle (The Natural). He gave food in return for his wife s gifts which shows that he was willing to feed Sir Gawain. Also he gave shelter to Gawain when he could have easily rejected the knight. Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak are proven hospitable by nature. Both the King and the Lord keep their responsibilities and show their principles. In the book Morte D Arthur Sir Malory wrote, The the king got his spear in both his hands and ran towards Sir Mordred, crying and saying, Traitor, now thy deathday has come! (Malory 189). During the time of King Arthur killing rebels would be considered the duty of a king. Also he shows the principle of keeping his kingdom intact with his citizens from falling into slavery, which would have inevitably happened if Sir Mordred had taken rule of the realm of Arthur. Likewise stated by Morpurgo, The Knight strikes, only nicking Gawain, then reveals himself as Bertilak, admitting that he arranged the attempted seduction as a test of Gawain s virtue (Morpurgo). • 34. Theory Of The Principle Agent Problem In American politics, there are multiple examples of the phenomena known as the principle agent problem. A principle agent problem is when a person (the principal) hires another person (the agent) to perform a job that the principle cannot do themselves. However, the agent in these situations may go against the wishes of the principle for their own benefit, making the whole exchange a risk for the principle. In everyday life, an example of a principle agent problem is when a person hires a mechanic. They hire a mechanic because they don t have the knowledge, or the ability, to do the job. Unfortunately, the mechanic is aware of this, and may try to get more compensation by charging for more than is actually required. In the American political system, a specific example of the principle agent is the relationship between the heads of the Central Intelligence Agencyand the agents they employ. In an arrangement between the Central Intelligence Agency and an agent that they wish to hire, the CIA compensates the agent with the expectation that the agent will perform their required task, act covertly, and protect the United States of America. However, the agent may defect by giving other nations information that they deem is important, or acting in some other way that may compromise our country, so that the defecting agent could receive some sort of compensation. Although defectors are rather rare (as far as we know), when an agent does defect, it has serious consequences for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the drawbacks in my communication skill enhancement is that I don t think it works well in UK, in this multicultural university I have struggled to communicate effectively with students and teachers. Brushing with a minty toothpaste makes our mouths feel fresh so it s easy to remember to include it in our daily routine; but flossing is often an afterthought if it s a thought at all. If you visit your dental clinic in Frisco TX twice a year for your checkups, your dentist or hygienist likely asks if you re remembering to floss and you know you usually answer yes even though you really can t remember the last time you did it. What s the big deal with flossing? Is it really that important? Dental plaque is basically a biofilm made up of the bacteria that live in your mouth. The film adheres to your teeth and gums. When you feed the bacteria carbohydrates, like those found in sugar, milk, soft drinks, candy and cake, they not only multiply faster, they produce an acid that leads to tooth decay and gum disease. When you visit your dental clinic in Frisco TX, they will tell you that the longer this acidic plaque remains on your teeth, the more likely you ll develop cavities or gum disease. In addition, Ozyilmaz K etal 2012(15) assessed wound infiltration with saline, levobupivacaine, tramadol or tramadol plus levobupivacaine in lumbar disc surgeries. They observed that the time to first analgesia was earliest in saline group, followed by levobupivacaine group then tramadol group. None of the patients in tramadol plus levobupivacaine group required postoperative analgesic supplementation, and the visual analog scale scores were 3 at all measurement times and this may be attributed to high levobupivacaine dose (100 mg) which is double of our study. Moreover, Albayrak M etal 2013(16) studied the effect of local wound infiltration with saline, levobupivacaine or tramadol before the closure of the wound edges after cesarean delivery and revealed that tramadol ... • 50. My Visit At The Huntington Museum Of Art The first thing I noticed at the Huntington Museum of Art was how quiet and empty it was. This was not displeasing however quite the opposite in fact. The atmosphere was perfect for contemplation and thought, which is exactly what I want in a museum. I was still surprised of course; my visit to the Art Institute of Chicagohad been very different. Unlike in Huntington, Chicago s museum was packed to the brim, and the people within it practically shouting just to be heard. It is very easy to decide which one I liked more, in terms of surroundings anyway. As I walked along, my footsteps echoing, I could not help but feel like there was something missing. The art was perfectly fine, but there was a lack of liveliness to the place, something that Chicago had in spades. I remember noticing that the art only had names, and no descriptions. This was something I disliked extremely. It is nice to look at images I suppose, but I want some history. I want the time period, and a description of the artist, two things that play a huge role in what a paintingis actually about. I felt like I should just naturally understand what each pieceof art was trying to describe to me, which was an irritating feeling. It only took me about twenty minutes to go through the entire museum. Nothing really drew me in, except for a couple of pieces. This was entirely different from my visit to the Art Institute of Chicago. There, almost everything drew me in. All the paintings, and especially some of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Cask Of Amontillado, Good Country People, And The Lottery The dark side of human nature has been present throughout the course of life as illustrated in The Cask of Amontillado, Good Country People, and The Lottery. The darkness is a predominant theme as expressed by a few character traits throughout the short stories. Humans have been responsible for acts of care and compassion, yet the dark side of humannature overcomes them through the themes of pride, self preservation, and deception which throughout the short stories gives evidence of the dark side of human nature. Pride has built the characters up and blinded them to the point where they undertake horrible actions. Pride has corrupted and transformed the nature of the characters as expressed by Montresor when he introduces his desire for vengeance against Fortunato, The ... Nothing s good enough for them, they ll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody works anymore, live that way for a while (Jackson 3). The Lottery is an extreme example of self preservation in society. They were so used to killing off one person every year they can t differentiate right from wrong. Old man Warner acts as if someone had insulted him by insisting on cancelling the lottery. Today, society has fallen into a lull of constant eviland it can t tell itself that something it s doing wrong is not right. An important moment occurs when joy is contemplating taking off her leg for Manly, No one ever touched it but her. • 52. The Zookeeper s Wife The opening scene of the Zookeeper s Wife is vital in establishing the binary between the oasis of the zoo before the war and the destruction the war brings. Natural sunlight fills the first scene of the film and green is a common color found throughout the zoo. The first scene oozes natural beauty and signifies the life that occupies it. The zoo seems almost too perfect, like it could not possibly be a creation of man, but of one gifted from the heavens. The zoo begins as the Garden of Eden in the midst of Poland, but as the war erupts, it mimics the original sin, destroying the zoo turning its sanctuary into a thing of the past. The ash from the ghettos covers the zoo and literally represents destruction of not only the ghetto but, the former ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a place where everyone can come from all over the world and no matter how many problems they have, no matter how many struggles they have been through or what their religion or culture is, they can succeed and have a better life in the land of Uncle Sam. Immigration to the U.S. has been through different stages where in the beginning European came seeking freedom to practice their religion and culture without oppression. • 54. Analysis Of The Poem The Yacoubian Building The Yacoubian Building, like many novels in the vein of historical fiction, contextualizes factual events through characterization and symbolism. Set in post Nasser modern Egypt, the reader is introduced to a number of characters a wealthy, promiscuous engineer; a young woman down on her luck; a boy turned quickly to fundamentalist attitudes just to name a few. These characters and their escapades provide more than just entertainment for the reader, however. Al Aswany uses the characters in his novel to illuminate the psychological, social, and emotional effects of Egyptian political history. Much like liberal Egypt, Nasser s reign and the Arab Socialist movement was filled with idealism and promise, both of which gave way to corruption and greed. One can easily find economic statistics or political articles detailing the objective inadequacies of Nasser, Sadat, and their successors. Al Aswany brings a different, equally valuable narrative. This novel fills in the gaps of objective and factual histories, allowing the reader to understand the personal and emotional response to seminal events in Egyptian history. The personal truly is the political, and The Yacoubian Building exemplifies that statement. Before discussing the characters and their roles, one must first look at the setting. The vast majority of the novel takes place in the actual Yacoubian Building, the former paramount of Egyptian liberalism. The cream of society of those days took up residence in the ... • 55. Life And Death That Polish Literature Writing thrives as a favorable way of expressing one s ideas and beliefs. Sharing one s thoughts on paper has always been part of the role of being a writer; it serves a purpose of writing a reflection of one s personal thoughts and opinions. From the Medieval era to the Renaissance era, Poland is remarked as a period of change. Poland was expanding as a country and many political events were occurring. During this span of time, Polish literature signifies various changes in its themes, beliefs and language all constituted with a purpose. The theme of life and death overpowers Polish literature written during these two eras. Two pieces that demonstrate an experience of death and how the author s worldview comes through the text are Jan... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The piece that demonstrates a wide scope of his worldview is Laments. Jan Kochanowski expresses his despair and emotions after the loss of his child in the form of treny. Treny are an older style of writing that praise the life and accomplishments of those who passed, especially well known figures. Kochanowski s Laments can be distinguished from the typical treny for the sole reason that the subject is a child instead of a famous or intellectual individual. However, the main character in Laments is Kochanowski himself. He plays the role of a grieving father and author who struggles to find the value and trust in any philosophy, religion and life itself after his daughter s death disrupted his reality. In the article Why We Write About Grief, Oates explains that Grief is the most humane of emotions but it is a one sided emotion; it is not reciprocated. This is exactly what makes Laments credible for the Kochanowski s worldview through death. He experienced it himself as a parent; one cannot simply understand how it feels to lose a child. It is not a typical telling of a story about death; it is the dark emotions of a mourning father. Throughout the Laments, Kochanowski intertwines the theme of searching ways to relieve pain and his bitter reflection on death. Specifically, he expresses a rebellion against death. From ...
