A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
3. RESEARCH
When researching I felt like I covered most genres/styles of
music videos and got a good understanding of them.
Researching definitely helped me for my video and gave me
many ideas for the genre, editing style, filters, effects...
One weakness in my research was the amount of detail I went
into. I feel like I could have gone into more depth with some of
the different genres, as I have written more on my preferred
genres compared to the ones I don’t like as much. It doesn’t
effect my music video as the genre I have chosen, I have
researched in great detail and looked at many videos which are
similar to what I was aiming for.
4. PLANNING
One strength of my
planning was the shot
list. In my shot list I
put lots of details such
as the angle of the
camera, movements,
locations of shot...
This was a massive
help as when I was
filming, I could read
and tick of the shots I
had done and could
see what I was
missing.
One weakness of my planning was
my location planning. What I should
have done is looked at how far they
were from each other, as by the
time I got to filming at the skate
park I had ran out of time and
wasn’t able to go as it was too far.
This didn’t really effect my video, it
just meant I didn’t get the skater
5. TIME MANAGEMENT In terms of time
management when
filming we did quite
well. One thing that
helped massively was
the timetable I created
in class, and ensured
we had all the shots
we wanted.
In terms of editing the music video and all of my written work, I
feel like I was quite good with time management. As I had all my
footage already filmed, I managed to finish my music video on
time and had time to spare meaning I could go through and
change bits that I wasn’t happy with.
If I had more time I would go through my written work and add
some more detail where I could, especially my case study as I
wasn’t to sure about some of the questions.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
Throughout the video I mainly used medium shots,
but sometimes changed it by using some low down
shots. As a lot of my shots are walking clips they tend
to be medium shots as I want it to be from my point
of view. I felt like most of my shots were smooth but
the odd one would be slightly shakey, but apart from
that I felt like my filming went quite well. For some of
my still shots I used a tripod which also helped
improve the quality.
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
In terms of editing, I felt like it went quite well. To fit in with the
indie, low budget aesthetic I was going for I mostly just cut to the
next shot on the beat. I did the odd reversed but that’s about as
technical as I went. To make the video more interesting I cropped
down a lot of the footage and split it up so the clips didn’t go on for
too long and it is more interesting for the audience .
8. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I think my video went to plan as it has the style and the aesthetic
that I wanted it to. I particularly like the shots which I filmed
infront of the graffiti walls as it gives it the urban vibe I was
aiming for. I like the style of it aswell as I wanted it to be short
random clips to gave it the aesthetic I wanted.
One thing that I could improve on is the effects I use as I only
uses one type and its quite basic. I also could have added a filter
to give it more of an aesthetical look, maybe a vintage looking
filter to give it more of an indie vibe.
9. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I think that my video is appealing to my target audience as it fits
into the style of music video that compliments the type of song
that I have chosen. To make the video more appealing and
interesting for the audience to watch I have filmed in multiple
locations, cut the footage down so it doesn’t go on for to long
and put random clips in to split it apart and surprise the
audience. As it is targeted towards the indie audience I feel like
the choice of outfits and the urban aesthetics will really appeal
to them.

Really liked the aesthetic shots
Lots of locations
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Could have been more types of editing
Tasha
12. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
Editing when I made it reverse, shots cut on beat
Change of scenery
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Could have been smother shots when filming
Tshepang
13. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
Editing was creative
Different locations
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Walking around too much
Keiran
14. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
I agree that there was a lot of walking around. Even though this
was the effect I was going for I could have done more shots when
standing in one location.
One thing that I disagree with is that there should have been
more types of editing. The effect I was going for was cut to next
shot, as it gives more of an indie vibe.
