Research
• What were the strengths of your research? How did your research help
your product?
• One strength was that is it was on topic to the music video. My research looked at
editing and camera techniques that I could employ and how to do them.
• Another strength is that is was detailed enough that I could come back to it later in
production on how to do it, if I needed to.
• What were the weaknesses of your research? What could you have
done better/improve? What effect would this have had on your
product?
• I could have thought about how too implement them into my video and of they
would work inside it. I only partially used one the techniques that I researched
and that was the transitions, I only used one and that was a pull and push from
black that didn’t really work
• I think researching techniques that could be implanted nicely would have made
the video better as it would be more special effected. This would have made
the video look more professional I think
Planning
• What were the strengths of your planning? How did your planning help your
product?
• I believe the shot list was done well as it contained all the information I needed and was
very detailed, with like frame rates and shot type etc. This really helped on set as it was my
go too document and helped me to visualise what it would look like
• Also, the location planning was done well so when I arrived in town I knew exactly where
to go and we could get started right away. This really helped as it meant I had more time
too shoot
• What were the weaknesses of your planning? What could you have done
better/improve? What effect would this have had on your product?
• The concept board wasn’t very detailed but I think that was because I already had a solid
idea in my head. I think maybe developing it more would have meant I had some better
ideas for little things in the video that would have possibly worked better
• Also, my structural breakdown was very detailed and would have helped in the same way
the concept board development would have
Time Management
• Did you manage your time well? Did you complete your project on time
or would your products have improved with additional time?
• My time was managed well as everything was handed in on time and too a decent
standard
• I think it would definitely improve with more time as I could fix the colour and re-
shot some scenes
• What would you have done if you had more time to produce your work?
• I would have gone through most colour presets and found one that worked well
for all the shots not just the few shots I looked at
• I also would have re-shot the shaky footage to make it smoother so I would have
to push the warp stabilisation to a max for it look nice
Technical Qualities – Production – Mine vs.
Original
• Both music videos have a number of actors and explore the theme of love but in different
ways. Mine is through the video and the original does it through the colours in the studio
• I have a lot of movement and variety of shot types whereas the original use static shots
and has the actors move a lot more. They stick to close ups and close – mid shots but use
different angels that give an impression of confusion about this girl he is talking about. I
used a lot of movement to cover up the boring story line so the viewer isn’t boring
• The framing of the actors in the original are always centre during the singing parts and off
centre but still composed correctly, I attempted the same thing but flipped it, during the
soft singing parts they aren’t centred as they are emotional and not in the right head space
so not centred. During the more upbeat happier they are centred to show how they have
come back as it were from this emotional state

Technical Qualities – Editing/Post – Mine vs.
Original
• In my video, for the upbeat and bouncy parts I have cut from shot to shot in
time with the beat whereas the original has Jon Bellion dancing in time with
the music. I like the original more as it has structure and not just a mash of
short clips that kind of look nice together but have no story throughout
• We have both edited the colour in the video, the original has used black and
white, mixed with a red key light only. I have only edited the colour overall so
it doesn’t look so bland as I was using a neutral colour profile in camera
After
&
Before

80% of shots
are B&W
Aesthetic Qualities
• My aim was to create a piece with a lot of movement and shifting colours. I
think I achieved my goals of not having many static shots but not the shifting
colour. I attempted it in editing but it looked very unprofessional and just not
good
• Does your work look good?
• I think it looks good from a cinematic stand point but I think the colouring doesn’t
really look good and I am not happy about it very much
• Was it creative?
• I think the mixture of creative camera moves and editing makes it quite creative
• What aspects of your video’s visuals do you like?
• I really like the opening shot and the way it spins round the actors and the cutting too
the beat in the verses
• What would you improve? How would you improve it?
• I would fix the colour issue by experimenting with other presets
• I would reshoot the shaky bits and make them smoother whilst shooting and not with a warp
stabilization
Aesthetic Qualities
The black bars make it
look very cinematic
and like a professional
video
I think this font works as it match's the artists
style and is similar to the font he uses in his other
videos
The movement of the camera around the
actors makes a nice effect and the
smoothness gives it a professional feel as
it is not jittery or shaky.
Audience Appeal
• How have you appealed to your target audience? What specific bits
of content would appeal to your target audience.
• I have appealed to a more modern audience as the song is quite a modern
song and the sort of song that isn’t liked so much by older generation. I think
this is good as younger people have the means to spread the video about as
they are more avid users of social media.
• It is also for the 16-25 category as it includes younger actors that are
relatable to the views. I think this is good because it means that younger (16-
25) viewers are more likely to enjoy it.
• The inclusion of two female characters appeals a more modern audience as it
can be assumed they are together romantically and younger people are more
accepting and understanding than the older generation who may not agree
with it etc
• Some people may watch it due to it being filmed in York and want to see how
it is portrayed through different peoples creative ideas
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• It flowed very well
• Looked very cinematic
• The acting was fantastic
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The warp-stabilization can be seen in some shots so maybe making sure that
the movements are smoother in camera
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• I like the colour, it worked very well
• Simple but effective, told the story well
• Good quality
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• Maybe more footage as there was a verse missing and some very long shots
that weren't that interesting
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• The cinematography was very nice too look at
• The camera movements were very smooth and looks well done
• The cutting to the beat was good in some parts
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The colour was a bit strange, didn’t really fit but was a nice attempt
• There could be more effects and fancy transitions
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I agree with almost everything to be fair. There are things to work on but
there were some good bits too
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I don’t believe it flowed well as it is quite choppy especially in the upbeat
parts of the chorus as it was just a myriad of clips I found that were small
looked good
Peer Feedback Summary
• What changes would you make to your product based upon your
peer feedback and why?
• I would change the colour away from a green-y dark looking preset to a
pinker and orange-er one to make it feel warmer and more wholesome
• I would go back out and shoot more footage to fill the long stretches and the
verse that was cut out and re-shoot the shots with movement too make
them as smooth as possible
• I would also have written transitions into the storyboard and shot list so I
wouldn't have forgotten about them on set. This would make the video flow
a bit better and not look choppy
Action Plan for future development
• Problems
• Actors – secure better actors so I don’t have to use my friends because I have
found that they and I don’t take as seriously as it should have been. I need to
find people I don’t have a close relationship with so it can be taken more
seriously.
• Area of weakness
• Colour grading – I need to work on getting my colours too match the feel of
the video and not pick the one that I find first. I need to experiment with
different LUTs and find which is best
• Writing – I need to work on coming up with less simple ideas that are still do-
able unlike my idea for Overture – AJR as that was interesting but not doable
in the slightest
• Enjoyed
• Movement – I enjoyed filming the moving shots more than the stationary
ones. I would like to try other types of movement like 360 degree rotation
like the end scene in Rouge One and trying to move through objects like
windows or holes in gate etc

MV evaluation

  • 3. Research • What were the strengths of your research? How did your research help your product? • One strength was that is it was on topic to the music video. My research looked at editing and camera techniques that I could employ and how to do them. • Another strength is that is was detailed enough that I could come back to it later in production on how to do it, if I needed to. • What were the weaknesses of your research? What could you have done better/improve? What effect would this have had on your product? • I could have thought about how too implement them into my video and of they would work inside it. I only partially used one the techniques that I researched and that was the transitions, I only used one and that was a pull and push from black that didn’t really work • I think researching techniques that could be implanted nicely would have made the video better as it would be more special effected. This would have made the video look more professional I think
  • 4. Planning • What were the strengths of your planning? How did your planning help your product? • I believe the shot list was done well as it contained all the information I needed and was very detailed, with like frame rates and shot type etc. This really helped on set as it was my go too document and helped me to visualise what it would look like • Also, the location planning was done well so when I arrived in town I knew exactly where to go and we could get started right away. This really helped as it meant I had more time too shoot • What were the weaknesses of your planning? What could you have done better/improve? What effect would this have had on your product? • The concept board wasn’t very detailed but I think that was because I already had a solid idea in my head. I think maybe developing it more would have meant I had some better ideas for little things in the video that would have possibly worked better • Also, my structural breakdown was very detailed and would have helped in the same way the concept board development would have
  • 5. Time Management • Did you manage your time well? Did you complete your project on time or would your products have improved with additional time? • My time was managed well as everything was handed in on time and too a decent standard • I think it would definitely improve with more time as I could fix the colour and re- shot some scenes • What would you have done if you had more time to produce your work? • I would have gone through most colour presets and found one that worked well for all the shots not just the few shots I looked at • I also would have re-shot the shaky footage to make it smoother so I would have to push the warp stabilisation to a max for it look nice
  • 6. Technical Qualities – Production – Mine vs. Original • Both music videos have a number of actors and explore the theme of love but in different ways. Mine is through the video and the original does it through the colours in the studio • I have a lot of movement and variety of shot types whereas the original use static shots and has the actors move a lot more. They stick to close ups and close – mid shots but use different angels that give an impression of confusion about this girl he is talking about. I used a lot of movement to cover up the boring story line so the viewer isn’t boring • The framing of the actors in the original are always centre during the singing parts and off centre but still composed correctly, I attempted the same thing but flipped it, during the soft singing parts they aren’t centred as they are emotional and not in the right head space so not centred. During the more upbeat happier they are centred to show how they have come back as it were from this emotional state Creative angels but a static shot Static shot but she is moving around a lot Variety of shot types and movement Push in and spin shot Pan across shot Same background - shot in a studio
  • 7. Technical Qualities – Editing/Post – Mine vs. Original • In my video, for the upbeat and bouncy parts I have cut from shot to shot in time with the beat whereas the original has Jon Bellion dancing in time with the music. I like the original more as it has structure and not just a mash of short clips that kind of look nice together but have no story throughout • We have both edited the colour in the video, the original has used black and white, mixed with a red key light only. I have only edited the colour overall so it doesn’t look so bland as I was using a neutral colour profile in camera After & Before Red key light gives a nice look to scene 80% of shots are B&W
  • 8. Aesthetic Qualities • My aim was to create a piece with a lot of movement and shifting colours. I think I achieved my goals of not having many static shots but not the shifting colour. I attempted it in editing but it looked very unprofessional and just not good • Does your work look good? • I think it looks good from a cinematic stand point but I think the colouring doesn’t really look good and I am not happy about it very much • Was it creative? • I think the mixture of creative camera moves and editing makes it quite creative • What aspects of your video’s visuals do you like? • I really like the opening shot and the way it spins round the actors and the cutting too the beat in the verses • What would you improve? How would you improve it? • I would fix the colour issue by experimenting with other presets • I would reshoot the shaky bits and make them smoother whilst shooting and not with a warp stabilization
  • 9. Aesthetic Qualities The black bars make it look very cinematic and like a professional video I think this font works as it match's the artists style and is similar to the font he uses in his other videos The movement of the camera around the actors makes a nice effect and the smoothness gives it a professional feel as it is not jittery or shaky.
  • 10. Audience Appeal • How have you appealed to your target audience? What specific bits of content would appeal to your target audience. • I have appealed to a more modern audience as the song is quite a modern song and the sort of song that isn’t liked so much by older generation. I think this is good as younger people have the means to spread the video about as they are more avid users of social media. • It is also for the 16-25 category as it includes younger actors that are relatable to the views. I think this is good because it means that younger (16- 25) viewers are more likely to enjoy it. • The inclusion of two female characters appeals a more modern audience as it can be assumed they are together romantically and younger people are more accepting and understanding than the older generation who may not agree with it etc • Some people may watch it due to it being filmed in York and want to see how it is portrayed through different peoples creative ideas
  • 12. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? • It flowed very well • Looked very cinematic • The acting was fantastic • What improvements could have been made to the product? • The warp-stabilization can be seen in some shots so maybe making sure that the movements are smoother in camera
  • 13. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? • I like the colour, it worked very well • Simple but effective, told the story well • Good quality • What improvements could have been made to the product? • Maybe more footage as there was a verse missing and some very long shots that weren't that interesting
  • 14. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? • The cinematography was very nice too look at • The camera movements were very smooth and looks well done • The cutting to the beat was good in some parts • What improvements could have been made to the product? • The colour was a bit strange, didn’t really fit but was a nice attempt • There could be more effects and fancy transitions
  • 15. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? • I agree with almost everything to be fair. There are things to work on but there were some good bits too • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? • I don’t believe it flowed well as it is quite choppy especially in the upbeat parts of the chorus as it was just a myriad of clips I found that were small looked good
  • 16. Peer Feedback Summary • What changes would you make to your product based upon your peer feedback and why? • I would change the colour away from a green-y dark looking preset to a pinker and orange-er one to make it feel warmer and more wholesome • I would go back out and shoot more footage to fill the long stretches and the verse that was cut out and re-shoot the shots with movement too make them as smooth as possible • I would also have written transitions into the storyboard and shot list so I wouldn't have forgotten about them on set. This would make the video flow a bit better and not look choppy
  • 17. Action Plan for future development • Problems • Actors – secure better actors so I don’t have to use my friends because I have found that they and I don’t take as seriously as it should have been. I need to find people I don’t have a close relationship with so it can be taken more seriously. • Area of weakness • Colour grading – I need to work on getting my colours too match the feel of the video and not pick the one that I find first. I need to experiment with different LUTs and find which is best • Writing – I need to work on coming up with less simple ideas that are still do- able unlike my idea for Overture – AJR as that was interesting but not doable in the slightest • Enjoyed • Movement – I enjoyed filming the moving shots more than the stationary ones. I would like to try other types of movement like 360 degree rotation like the end scene in Rouge One and trying to move through objects like windows or holes in gate etc
