Liquidity Ratios and Activity Ratios
2.0 FINANCIAL RATIOS
2 Liquidity Ratios
Liquidity ratios measure a business capacity to pay its debts as they come due. It also measures the
cooperative s ability to meet short term obligations. Liquidity refers to the solvency of the firm s
overall financial position the ease with which it can pay its bills. Because a common precursor to
financial distress and bankruptcy is low or declining liquidity, these ratios can provide early signs of
cash flow problems and impending business failure. The two basic measures of liquidity are the
current ratio and the quick (acid test) ratio (Gitman, 2009).
1. Current ratios
The current ratio is current assets divided by current liabilities. The current ratio ... Show more content

No ratio, in fact, is especially meaningful without knowledge of the business from which it originates.
For example, a declining quick ratio with a stable current ratio may indicate that a company has built
up too much inventory, but it could also suggest that the company has greatly improved its collection
system. Quick ratio is expressed as follows:
Quick Ratio = Current assets Inventory / Current Liabilities Figure 2.2 explained the company s quick
ratio has been improving from year on year from 0.51 in 2007 to 0.63 in 2008 and then increased to
0.69 in 2009. Quick ratio for 2009 is higher compared to the industry average quick ratio that is 0.65.
Even though it has shown incremental improvement of their quick ratio and surpassed the industry
average of 0.65 acid tests, the firm would have to sell inventory to meet its obligations. Comparing
quick ratios over an extended period of time can be used to signal developing trends in a company.
While modest declines in the quick ratio do not automatically spell trouble, uncovering the reasons for
changes can help to find ways to nip potential problems in the bud. As for PJV s case, this is a good
sign that the company progress steadily in improving its quick ratio over 3 years period in which may
be resulting from its reduced inventories in 2009. The company s quick ratio can further be increased
to a satisfactory level (at least 1:1) by improving its collection system and policy. Like the

Thickness In Millimeters Lab Report
9.) Calculations h = height or thickness
D = M/V
V = M/D
L*W*H = M/D
Trial 1:
This calculation solves for the height (h), or thickness, of the aluminum foil.
(29.97 cm * 30.50 cm * h cm) = (3.82 g/2.70 cm2)
(914.085 cm2 * h cm) = (3.82 g/2.70 cm2) h cm = 0.00155 cm
The following calculations express the height (h)/thickness in millimeters and micrometers.
(0.00155 cm * (10 mm/1 cm)) = 0.0155 mm
(0.00155 cm * (10,000 μm/1 cm)) = 15.5 μm
Trial 2:
This calculation solves for the height (h), or thickness, of the aluminum foil.
(9.60 cm * 6.10 cm * h cm) = (0.23 g/2.70 cm2)
(58.56 cm2 * h cm) = (0.23 g/2.70 cm2) h cm = 0.0015 cm

Three different pieces of aluminum foil were used for three different trials in order to determine the
thickness. Data was then collected by using an electric balance for mass and a standard ruler for length
and width. The formulas used were area = length * width, volume = length * width * height, and
density = mass / volume. Thickness (height) was found simply by dividing mass by density, width,
and length. The average of our three trials was not only calculated, but also found via the graph and
slope.. A graph of area vs. mass was made with data points from our three trials. Using linear fit, the
graph showed that the slope, which was then divided by the density. This calculation isolated the
height in centimeters. The slope of the graph was 0.004181 g/cm2. This value shows the relationship
between the area of the aluminum foil and its mass. The values plotted in this graph were used to
calculate the thickness of the aluminum foil via an alternative method. Additionally, the graph had a
correlation value of 1.00. This means that area and mass have a strong, direct relationship. According
to pure calculations based upon the data alone, the thickness of the aluminum foil was 0.0016 cm.
This is identical to the value of thickness provided by the aluminum foil company, Reynold s.
According to calculations using the slope,

Essay On Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla, noted inventor, engineer, machinist, and electrical pioneer was born in 1846 in what is
now modern Croatia. His parents had five children which included siblings Dane, Angelina, Milka and
Marica, in the family. His mother, Djuka Mandic, who invented small household appliances in her
spare time while her son was growing up, spurred Tesla s interest in electrical invention. Tesla s father,
Milutin Tesla, was a Serbian orthodox priest and a writer, and he pushed for his son to join the
priesthood. Very little else is recorded regarding his early childhood or primary education. It is
rumored, though, that the young Tesla was alternately cheerful and upbeat, or sullen and solitary. A
general theme in his life, though, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While both men went on to continue developing sensational inventions, Edison is the man most
credited in history books for his work. Tesla, on the other hand, was not an inventor seeking fame, but
one who simply had a peculiar and uncanny view on the world. He was known to have outbursts of
creative genius that led to days of non stop work, eventually resulting in his register(ing) over 700
patents worldwide. His most well known work revolved around the Alternating Current electrical
theories. While this stood in direct opposition to the corporately backed efforts of Edison to promote a
Direct Current network for electrical distribution, Tesla continued with the idea of transmitting
electricity through the air, and free to all people. Edison scoffed at the idea, but even the newest
research in the 21st century reveals that Tesla s notions are quite feasible. In the end, it is clear that his
early education at home, his formal education on record, and his work with Edison all contributed to
the foundation of Nikola Tesla s broad range of work.
The public perception of Tesla was quite positive during his productive years, even earning the
financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan for a while . Tesla s disputes with Edison grew over the years,
though, eventually leading Tesla to abandon much of his work later in life, and he eventually died
penniless in 1943 while residing in a New York hotel. By all accounts, he was

Free Tutoring Is A Great Thing For The End Of The Day Essay
Introduction
A lot of parents would love to get their child the help they need for school, or extra help to get ahead if
needed. Today there are a lot of tutoring programs out here, but all of them are not free. So, where
does that leave the children and the parents who cannot afford these programs? It can leave that child
at a lost because that child is not getting that extra help to become successful. Free tutoring is a great
thing for several reasons. At the HOPE Academy they offer free tutoring for students who may cannot
afford tutoring and are behind in their class. HOPE academy is making a differences in their kid s
lives because it is not just tutoring at the end of the day.
Social issues/challenges
There are several social issues that pertains to my service learning, but the main issue I would say is
getting the students the extra help that they need. Most of the students live in poverty or not the best of
areas and getting access to the extra help for school are slim to none. Most of the students who come
into the tutoring program at HOPE are not on their reading grade level or math grade level. This is
nothing to come to be a shock because there are a lot of kids every year that fall behind their grade
level. It seems to be the ones that do not live the best of areas.
This is a serious issue because once a child is behind especially at a young age it can be very difficult
to catch back up. Unfortunately, that child may never catch up to grade level if he or she

How Beastly The Bourgeois, By D. H. Lawrence
In the poem, How Beastly the Bourgeois is written by D.H. Lawrence. The author uses a speaker who
describes his disgust of the Bourgeois (the character) in the poem. Lawrence has the speaker use
figurative language and rhetorical devices to express the disgust the speaker has of Bourgeois.
Lawrence uses repetition, scientific diction, rhetorical questions, simile, defamiliarization, anaphora
and a conceit to show the disgust towards the character in the poem. The ways the author uses literary
works describes the Bourgeois using satire so it decreases the characters pride and presumption. Satire
is when you use sarcasm, humor, or exaggeration to criticizes people s lives, in the way they work,
how they look, and how they speak or live to make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A conceit is an extended metaphor. The conceit begins when the speaker uses the metaphor, Nicely
groomed, like a mushroom standing there so sleek and erect and eyeable (Line 21). The speaker
begins by saying that the character is handsome and great looking but by comparing him to a
mushroom makes the Bourgeois gross because he is talking about a poisonous mushroom that people
may think looks good on the outside but on the inside it is rotten. Then Lawrence continues to add to
the metaphor by having the speaker state, and like a fungus, living on the remains of bygone life
sucking his life out of the dead leaves (Lines 23/24). Lawrence extends the metaphor and compares
the Bourgeois to fungus. The speaker believes he is disgusting because fungi hold bacteria and also
suck life out of dead leaves. Sucking life out of dead leaves compares to the Bourgeois being lazy and
not working to earn his own money, instead he is taking the money from either his dead parents or
relatives. The author then extends the metaphor even longer by having the speaker announce, he s
stale, he s been there too long (Line 25). Lawrence compares him to something that is hard or gross to
eat which shows the reader that the man is disgusting because any human wants to eat something stale
or distasteful. The bourgeois is also compared to a fungi which is disgusting because it is parasitic.

What Is The Effect Of The Cuban Missile Crisis
What happens when two powerful countries clash with each other? Usually in history one country
rises, while the other country falls. However, in this event in history it s different. Two completely
different people with different views on government can come to a common ground agreement. Not
everything leads to war.
The U.S. and the Soviet Union leaders engaged into a political and military stand off for thirteen days.
There was a fear that this would lead to a nuclear war. President Kennedy announces that U.S. spy
planes, U 2, discovered Soviet missiles bases in Cuba (History.com) Cuba is 90 miles away from the
United States. These missiles were medium range missiles that were capable of striking important
cities, including Washington, D.C. During the next few days, the crisis escalated to a breaking point of
nuclear war with two dominating powerful countries.
After seizing power in the Caribbean island nation of Cuba in 1959, leftist revolutionary leader Fidel
Castro aligned himself with the Soviet Union (History.com). Under Castro leadership, Cuba had

The Future of Fiber Optics
I. What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of conversations.
This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology. Fiber optics may
also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined as a flexible,
transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of
human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light transmission from one end of the
fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber optic communications. These fibers are
quite technologically advanced because they have the ability to transmit more data and at a quicker
rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also much less lost data when using fiber optic
technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber
optic cables are also used for the purpose of lighting and sensing. There are already many practical
applications of the technology such as lasers, but these applications are just the beginning of the
potential of this powerful technology.
II. How was Fiber Optics Discovered? Fiber optics as we know it today has been the result of a long
chain of inventions that all began with John Tyndall s 1854 discover that light can be conducted
through water and bent. Later in 1895, a

The Problem with the United States Constitution
According to the United Nations, human rights are defined as rights inherent to all human beings,
whatever their nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language,
or any other status. Humans all equally entitled to human rights without discrimination. These rights
are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible.
The fight to protect human rights has been ongoing since the creation of law. The question of what
constitutes as a human right has been raised time and time again to redefine laws in order to
accommodate groups who have had their rights violated. From women s rights to the rights of
coloured people in America, social movements have been an integral part of creating change for the
betterment of society. Today, the world faces yet another movement: the campaign for gay rights and
the legalization of same sex marriage.
The gay rights movement in Canada began in 1967 with the arrest of Everett George Klippert on the
grounds of his homosexual conduct. He was the last person in Canada to be arrested for his sexual
orientation, as his case sparked protests and demands for reform. Ten years later, the decriminalization
of homosexuality in Canada ensued as a direct result of this case.
In the United States, the gay rights movement began much earlier. Dating back to 1924 the Society for
Human Rights in Chicago, the earliest

Conformity In The Great Gatsby
Drugs, alcohol, parties, popularity are the key known factors of peer pressure. In fact, most teenagers
today are exceptionally vulnerable to social conformity issues simply because social acceptance at
their age is important. However, they are not the only victims struggling in this stage; there are also
adults who are still swayed by the public opinions. This stage of social conformity, according to the
Kohlberg s stages of moral development, is often referred to as the Interpersonal (tribal) conformity.
This is applied to the large population of teenagers rather than the adults. In the book The Great
Gatsby, the peers around Daisy had a tremendous influence upon her decisions. Even as an adult,
Daisy consistently made an effort to satisfy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, this also applies to the situation of understanding what social conformity is. This subject has
been around for centuries, forcing many to behave in a certain way that the society expects. The
influence of peer pressure is still a topic has an impact to the world, especially the adolescents. The
[s]ocial psychologists have suggested that one core function of compliance and conformity is to
maintain group harmony ( Social Influence and the Brain:Persuasion, Susceptibility to Influence and
Retransmission Cascio,Scholz,Falk) and this applies to many individuals who value public opinions
more than their own. They seek to be good people and make an effort to follow the trend of the crowd.
More often than not, this also relates to the confidence level of an individual, If those others agree
with one s beliefs, one gains confidence in them; if they disagree, one loses confidence ( Conformity,
Levine). This is indeed what many people face today from all different phases of life. Daisy, one of the
characters in the book The Great Gatsby, is a perfect example of a person soaked into social
conformity. From the beginning of her marriage life with Tom to the end of the book, she progresses
into immoral stages of life. Day after day she conforms herself into a world filled with corruptions,
such as adultery and murder. Although, she is an adult, she is a character that is stuck in a stage that
her age group have already

How Did Women s Lacrosse Change
Lacrosse dates back all the way to the 1600 s when the Indians inhabited most of the North American
land. What once was referred to as stickball by the Native Americans has changed frequently
throughout the years, and is now a popular worldwide play sport.
Lacrosse was first played in St. Valley, New York by the Iroquois, who were a Native American tribe.
The game was originally created to praise their creator. Also to settle arguments between other tribes
and to prepare for war. There were very few rules, there was no boundaries and unlimited players were
allowed on the field at once. To start the game each team would yell their creator s name and put their
sticks in the air as a way of saying they were ready. The French explorers who were in North America
saw the Native Americans playing, the rules and setting was really different from how people play
today. The name of Lacrosse came from the French explorers who noticed how the sticks looked like a
cross that a Bishop would carry, called le crosier. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women s lacrosse is now an official sport and is also a part of the US Lacrosse League. The game is
no longer used to settle disputes and used as a way to configure war methods. It wasn t until around
1857 that a Canadian dentist named George Beers founded the Montreal Lacrosse Team, which
modified new rules and organized new clubs and teams. The first game that was played with the new
rules was at a college in Canada around 1857. About a year later Canada named lacrosse its national
sport. Lacrosse was brought to England where the game was played and expanded throughout England
schools. In the 1800 s, places in New York founded lacrosse clubs, and the game continued to grow.
Lacrosse was becoming a popular game throughout North America. Lacrosse still continues to change

two major attractions of low cost labour and an enormous domestic market of 1.2 billion consumers
has further propelled its initiatives toward economic reform such as opening up of markets and
reducing tariff levels. As a result, foreign investment has intensified. In the 1980s, foreign investors

Folktales has created men as the most powerful character in most stories but that does not mean
always as there s a difference in Grandmother s tale and Little Red Riding hood. Different genders
have different expectations according to their characteristics. The Red Riding Hood and Grandmother
s tale has produced ideas such as how a girl s life is looked upon in the past and how the male has the
upper hand in most situations according to the stories. This essay will argue about how the girl s
gender played a major role in the context of the story and how the wolf is represented by a male

This is because needles are much harder to master and takes a lot of time to be good at it while pins
are easy to use so this could mean that the male character has more experience than the female in life
so he took the path of needles. In grandmother s tale the wolf puts the grandmother s blood and flesh
for the girl to eat and drink. But the girl did not know anything about it so she drank it and while she
was doing so the cat and the bird could represent society as they tried to stop her from drinking the
grandmother s blood. But she did not listen to what they were saying and listened to the wolf who then
tells her to take off [her] clothes and come to bed . By doing what the wolf says this may be
interpreted as how the wolf is trying to transform the girl into being like him by doing what he does.
This could also mean the male character has more sexual experiences than the girl. Because needles
are harder to use than pins which mean without practice needles can hurt.
Furthermore, in Red Riding Hood she was wearing red which is the colour of blood as she was a

How Does Machiavelli Recommends To Political Leaders
What are some of the qualities and strategies Machiavelli recommends to political leaders in the

controversial and untraditional points regarding what a kingdom or prince was allowed to do to
maintain power. The most extreme, being that the prince wasn t held to any moral code in the practice
of maintaining power. A prince must be prepared to ward off any conflicting power even if it means
breaking traditional moral codes. Other powers, Machiavelli believed, wouldn t be so kind in combat

the injustice we daily serve, can also say with truth that there is not a secret place in your hearts where
you know I am right. Fear of reprisal, the absence of conviction, and reliance on continued failed
representation does not show clarity of thought. The inability to recognize or acknowledge that the

our voices to remain silent or only whispered in support. The now silent voices of free people from

Essay On Mass Shootings
United States Mass Shooting The grim truth is that mass shootings are becoming the new normal. A
mass murder refers to the antisocial and non state sponsored killing of multiple victims during a single
episode at one or more closely related locations. Prior to the mid 1990s. In the mid and late 1990s, a
string of shootings occurred. A growing number of specialists turned their attention to the school
massacres in search of an explanation for these perplexing events. Nine students were killed at
Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A man opened fire in a church, in Charleston,
South Carolina, killing nine people, including the pastor. Twenty seven were killed at Sandy Hook
Elementary School in Connecticut. Twelve were killed in the Washington Navy Yard. These are only a
few examples of a very long list of mass shootings that have occurred. The reasoning for the
accessible amount of mass shootings is controversial my theory for the epidemic of mass shooting in
the United States is mental health. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Explosives and Firearms requires

Hard drive A hard drive is a non volatile memory device used to store data permanently and retrieve
the same. A hard drive can store different types of data including text, graphics, audio, video, etc. A
hard drive works by using platters on which data is written with the help of a magnetic head. The
platters and head are encased in an air sealed case. Hard disks used inside computers are called
internal hard disks and are located in a drive bay; they use ATA, SATA, or SCSI cables to connect to
the motherboard. They derive power from the PSU (Power Supply Unit).
RAM Random Access Memory (RAM) is accessed randomly (without accessing preceding memory
bytes) by computers. Since data is read randomly, RAM is much faster to read from and write to than
other memory devices. RAM is volatile and can contain data only till the computer is powered on, it
loses data once the computer is powered off. RAM is called the primary memory and is used to load
parts of the operating system and drivers during device boot up. The most common types of RAM
include Dynamic RAM (DRAM) and Static RAM (SRAM).

This is done, at first, by his lack of speech: He looked up at me without replying . Dickens continues
this suggestion (the signalman is insane) when he does finally speak. He speaks only in a low voice,
adding to the suggestion of danger. Then he tells the narrator what is wrong: the ghostly sightings.
This again makes us question his sanity.
Dickens maintains this suspense that he has created with use of a leitmotiv of the red light, which is
linked to the menacing apparition and maybe an accident on the railway. When the narrator leaves
after the first visit the signalman still has not told him the full story about the apparition. We have to
wait until their next meeting to find out for ourselves. This leaves the story as a so called cliff hanger
and encourages us read on.
On their second meeting, the signalman tells the narrator, and us, of the accident that seemed so
obviously linked to the apparition by the fact that every time it appeared there was an accident on the
line somewhere. After, sustaining the suspense through the first meeting of the two men, Dickens
creates even more with the revealing of this ominous event. Dickens then maintains

Gait means locomotion and evaluating locomotion by professionals is called gait analysis. Pattern of
walking differ from one individual to another. A gait cycle consists of the activities that occur from the
point of initial contact of one lower extremity to the point at which the same extremity contacts the
ground again There are 2 phases of walking: stance phase ii. Swing phase. Stance phase covers from
heels strike to toe. In this phase foot is on ground which acts as a shock absorber. Swing phase is non

Gay Marriage Should be Legal Essay
There can be no question about the definition of marriage. There is considerable evidence form
history, the origins of the word, and even its current legal use. Yet, somehow there is still tension and
confusion surrounding the issue of same sex marriage. As the debate intensifies, emotional ones
quickly replace rational thoughts. Lately, homosexuals carry out most of the fight for the right to be
married. Of course, there are several other situations, in which people attempt to challenge traditional
matrimony. There was the man who tried to marry his horse. Mormons still practice polygamy, but
just as these scenarios do not fit the definition of marriage, neither does same sex marriage. Civil
unions were created by certain states to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a state legalizes same sex marriage, no other state has to recognize it, according to the Defense of
Marriage Act. Cultures, Christian religions, and laws still define marriage as the union between one
man and one woman. To many people, marriage is a religious institution. Churches became the
communal centers of society, because of the growing popularity of Christianity in Middle Age Europe.
They began to govern society and started to keep a record of holy matrimonies. Several different
religions immigrated to the Americas with the Europeans, but the most common theme was
Christianity. Roman Catholics, Quakers, Protestants and Jews, for example, each have their own
versions of the bible, but they are all based on Christian beliefs. American Christians accept the
definition of marriage as being of one man and one woman, because of their religious teachings. The
bible specifically mentions that God does not permit same sex marriage. Homosexuality was
forbidden by most European societies. Since the church was the center of many communities, their
rules would preside over the people in fear of the wrath of God. Our laws reflect many traditions of
the Church because Christian men founded the United States. America is still regarded as a Christian
nation, because she has implemented holy sacraments, such as marriage into the society. Not every
marriage was recorded by the church and before the church began

Persuasive Essay On The Joker
The scene opens with Darth Vader, one of the greatest villains to exist in a fictional universe. He
glides through the doors of the Rebel ship, stormtroopers following closely behind. His all black
outfit, cape, helmet, and all stand out against the stark white interior of the ship. His unmistakable
breathing echoes throughout the hall, and his light saber clings by his side. All great and memorable
villains have several things in common. All great fictional villains have great costumes that make
them memorable. For example the Joker from the Batman comic books, as well as the movie
adaptations has a great costume. He is most noticeably seen in a royal purple suit, and green or purple
tie. His hair is a nasty green color, usually seen slicked back. His defining characteristic lies with his
clown makeup, pasty white face paint, and a bright red smile, all which define the name Joker.
Another great villain with a memorable costume also belongs to the Batman universe. This villain
being The Penguin. The version that has the most notoriety is the one from the Tim Burton Batman
film from 1989. The Penguin is seen in a black suit, monocle, and top hat. It is his makeup that really
makes him live up to his namesake. His skin is painted a pale white, eyes a sunken in grey color, and a
nose made to be elongated to resemble a beak. A villain with a great costume outside of the Batman
universe is the greatest of all villains, the one and only Darth Vader. He is clad is all black apparel,
black combat style boots, a black cape, and most notably his black helmet. ... Show more content on

Edward Said states, No one today is purely one thing. Labels like Indian, or woman, or Muslim, or
American are no more than starting points. Said s idea illustrates the evolution of relations between
communities as a result of globalization, and the understanding and recognition of other cultures
through the interpretation of cultural borders.
In this essay I will analyse to what extent globalisation is affecting identity formation, and also the
roles of cultural borders in today s world. I will assess whether through globalisation of the media we
are in fact overcoming cultural borders and traditional stereotypes and in turn forging a mutual respect
between foreign communities, or as Said argues (Said cited in Crary amp; ... Show more content on

Archival accounts of the continuous race hatred directed against coloured people in Australia...reveal
the sexual and other preoccupations that occupied those white minds from which such fantasies
emanated (p. 43)
Australians wanted little to do with Asia, and besides those who wanted to expand the Western Sphere
of influence in the region (Rizvi 1996, p.175), few Australians traveled to Asia. Asian people were
essentially defined by their race, and by their embodiment of not being European.
It is with these historical perceptions in mind that Said s statement holds extreme worth. Said could be
seen as acknowledging past stereotypical labels enforced on Asian people, and dismissing these labels
in today s world, implying that something has changed to make these labels no more than starting
points . Relating this to Australia/Asia, we note that Australians previously judged Asians purely and
solely on racial grounds: Race became a key explanatory factor not only in academic anthropology,
but more importantly in the popular imagination of Australians. (Rizvi 1996, p. 175).
Cultural confusion and an unwillingness to appreciate local customs and values gave birth to a
contempt for local culture. Local people were simply seen as other , and non European people needed
to be tamed or civilised, made normal (Rizvi 1996, p.175).

Genetic Testing Helps Iceland to Become Down Syndrome Free
Some might say in response to the above announcement, This is positive medical news both for
Iceland and the world. Nothing here should concern the American public. Genetic testing for
abnormalities saves children from a life of significant disability and spares their parents painful stress.
The subsequent abortions avoid a wretched existence for the children and improves the quality of life
for their surviving families. That is not genocide; it is compassion and mercy. Moreover, it relieves
both the parents and society from having to shoulder severe medical expenses for care. That reduces

What deserves the rebuke? It is the system with all of its subtle pressures that promotes eugenic
genocide. That is what is being done, and that is the real enemy. For hidden within this system lurks a
sinister, half conscious, genetic selection system. If awakened fully, it will snap eagerly to attention to
do its job. What is that? The passion to play god, expressed in the arbitrary elimination of entire
people groups deemed aesthetically undesirable and, therefore, less than human. It is the opening shot

How could that be?
What expert can assure that Iceland s focus will not broaden to include other genetic traits that have
nothing to do with disability but are just unfavored socially? The precedent has been set. If history is
any guide, that is precisely what will happen. Gender is not a disease, but sexual selection is already
an international problem. Moreover, advocates for the disabled currently sound the alarm for the
future, such as Lloyd Lewis (president of the Colorado Cross Disability Coalition). In an article for the

Dbq Imperialism
After an elite revolution involving the advance of new technology and economy, global changes
occurred. Capitalism, socialism, and nationalism were very popular before the fall of Africa, and
before imperialism. With these ideas in mind, motivations like: the military, politics, demographic
features, economics, and social classes had influence for the future of Africa and countries like
Europe, Germany, and Russia were more powerful than Africa. Imperialism shaped when borders
were opened, and authority was limited. A nation that is thriving on foreign trade and control outside
its borders is more likely to imperialize. Europe s acquisition towards African colonies in 1880 to

Christian members in Europe established churches in conquered territories during the nineteenth
century. With this Western cultural values were spread. Europe found the option to use imperialism to
their advantage when the scramble for Africa occurred. This is when The Berlin West Africa
conference occurred regarding the split of Africa into colonies. The country was so behind with the
rapid industrialization, that new diffusion of ideas was necessary and sought out by citizens. Colliding
of religions also involved new education and new foreign languages. As seen in document five,
philanthropy was a key part and wanted five percent better through Europe at the time. This showed
Africa s hesitant distinction through the late 1880 s to 1950 s and was portrayed across the globe as a
developing reputation. Problems with governments, leaders, and trade reflected onto Africa that also
left religious views and questions in the air. Against imperialism, Africa saw no hope in ever regaining
independence. Colonial conflict struct, and a self government without the help of other countries was
out of the picture. In documents three and nine, a German man and German Social Democratic party

The Success and Intentions of Galileo Essay
Galileo has been depicted variously as a cynical opportunist, patient genius or lucky engineer, and dies
a coward or a modern Socrates. I agree that he is a patient genius, and lucky engineer, but I do not
agree that he is a cynical opportunist, coward or a modern Socrates.
Galileo was a mathematician and a natural philosopher, who converted Copernicanism, which states
that the earth revolved around the sun, into philosophy and the world s true nature. By introducing
new knowledge and using science to prove existing theories, he had caused a revolution by changing
how people perceive the world during the last few hundred years and to doubt the authority of the
Church, so as to spur on more people to confront the Church s interpretations ... Show more content

So, although he had his own thinking and ideas, he waited fir the right opportunity to voice them out
to minimize conflicts with the church, thus he was a patient genius.
He was a lucky engineer. Through his hard work, he achieved great results from observing the stars,
and applied math, scientific knowledge, and his own thinking in coming up with proofs that the
universe was heliocentric and other theories such as Jupiter had moons orbiting it too, defying the old
science that the Church was insisting on that the Earth was the center of the universe. He was also
lucky because his hard work had paid off when he gained fame and prestige from publishing his book.
If he had not done so, he might not have the motivation and opportunities to pursue the truth in
knowledge later on and might not have caused a revolution to occur. Many coincidences occurred, like
him getting famous, Baberini becoming the Pope, that allowed him to become what he is today. Thus,
he was a lucky engineer.
Like Socrates, he opposed the main ruler of the time, in Socrates case it was Athens, and in Galileo s
case, it was the Church. Socrates was found guilty of impiety sentenced to forced suicide, but he
actually wished for his death. He had the opportunity to run away, but he did not, as he believed that a
true philosopher do not fear death, and he wanted to uphold Athens law. Galileo was charged with

The Media Portrayal Of Nurses
Professional nurses are as important, in achieving success, as any other component within the
healthcare sector. For instance, a professional nurse typically spends more time in direct contact with
patients than a physician does (Hendrich et al., 2008). Nevertheless, media sources have always
painted the picture of a nurse in various forms. Although nurses are sometimes perceived as life savers
and angels of mercy, the profession is often sexualized, stereotyped, and undermined in its importance
(Hoeve et al., 2014). In this paper I will describe how the media portrays a professional nurse, and

break ups almost ensue. For instance, Chris starts dating a girl he works with and faces potential

The Impact Of Media Exposure On Self-Esteem And Body...
Russello, Salenna (2009) The Impact of Media Exposure on Self Esteem and Body Satisfaction in
Men and Women, Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research: Vol. 1 , Article 4.
This collegiate journal entry explains a study that investigates the effects of media coverage on men
and women s body satisfaction and self confidence. The author writes about the exceptionally
ridiculous standards of physical attractiveness for society to live by. Women are pressured to appear
slim and toned while men are expected to be more muscular and toned. Rusello writes that media can
affect people differently more than others, and that there are ways to help them change those negative
effects of the social media environment. This gave me a more informed perspective that people will
react differently to social media, even though we shouldn t allow the media from pressuring change in
ourselves.

contaminates get on the friction material, you may end up needing to completely replace the friction
material if the contaminates cannot be removed.
If you get oil or grease on the drum friction surface, try first to wipe it off with a rag dipped in brake
parts cleaner. If any contaminates are stuck on the friction surface, you may be able to remove them
with some fine sandpaper and a soft cloth.
#4 Don t Forget To Lubricate The Backing Plates
Finally, when you install the drum brake shoes, you need to make sure that the knuckles the drum
brake shoes rest on are well lubricated. You ll want to clean the area first with a cloth and possible
some brake parts cleaner. Then you will want to apply white lithium grease to the knuckles the shoes
rest on. This will ensure that the shoes are able to move properly when you installed them.
Working on drum brakes requires a lot of the same skills and knowledge that you used when you
worked on disc brakes. However, the type brake systems are not identical. Keep in mind the tips above
when you work on your disc brake

The Importance Of Physical Beauty In The Renaissance Era
Society s perception of love changes constantly. As a result, poems of different time periods have
different perceptions of love and beauty. Ben Jonson s A Vision of Beauty and Samuel Daniel s But
love whilst that thou mayst be loved again reflect the importance of physical beauty in love during the
Renaissance Era. In the Victorian Period, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt s I See You Juliet and Robert
Browning s A Face continue to reflect society s fascination with female beauty in both a positive and
negative way. In the Modern Period, a shift occurs in both marriage and love with a greater emphasis
on true love and inner beauty. William Butler Yeats When You Are Old and Edna St. Vincent Millay s

In his poem, But love whilst that thou mayst be loved again , he focuses on warning women to find
love soon because beauty will not last with age. He compares a woman s beauty to a flower: the fairest
flower that ever saw the light / men do not weigh the stalk for what it was / when they find her flower,
her glory, pass (Daniel 6, 13 14). Through this metaphor, he shows how men view beauty in love. No
one looks at a dead flower and thinks about what it used to be, rather, he or she looks towards other
flowers that bloom with life and colour. This sonnet begins as an admiration for his subject s beauty,
but it ends by telling the subject that when her physical beauty deteriorates, no one will love her. This
poem reflects society s fixation on superficial beauty because it reminds women that they will never
find love without external beauty, as a result of the superficiality of men in society. Both poems of the
Renaissance Period assert the idea of perfection and the importance of physical beauty in love and
relationships. Victorian era poets continue to propound the importance of superficial beauty. During
this era, there was a continual belief in lust and sexual desires, evident in the rampant disloyalty that
husbands showed their wives (Hughes). Wilfrid Scawen Blunt depicts this continual fascination of lust
and beauty in his poem, I See You Juliet . The

Romero Britto is a twentieth and twenty first century pop artist who was born in Recife, Brazil on

famous artists such as Toulouse Launtrec. Britto became inspired and began copying these fine art
pieces from the books the next day. Originally, Britto embraced art to escape from the real world even

Why Civilizations Fall
There have been many civilizations throughout history. Obviously they re not all around anymore, this
shows that all civilizations have to fall eventually, but how?
Civilizations have been around the world for a long time, this is because all societies have to fall. The
main reason they fall is because of the misuse of resources, the corruption of a leader, and tension
between different classes/communities in the civilization. There are several different examples of
these things corrupting civilizations. Overall, there are many different reasons civilization fall, but the
main reason are the corruptio of a leader, the misuse of resources, and tension between the different

In Rome, they would often have poor leaders. The leaders would not address the problems the people
were dealing with, they were out of sight, and out of mind . Inheritance of the title of Emperor was
unstable; this led to power struggles, violence, and insecurity. (Manitoba k12 student notebook) When
people inherited the crown, that weren t ready for it, the leader would be seen as corrupted. In Easter
Island, the people had absolutely no power. And while this may not necessarily be a bad thing, the
leaders on Easter Island made decisions based on how they would be directly affected, and not on how
the people of the island would be affected. In the past, some people on Easter Island, namely the
ruling class, were able to destroy other people and their homes, but now some societies can destroy
everything (Peter Tyson) This ability to destroy other people and their homes seems to be a
downscaled version of the world currently. In Nazi Germany, Hitler, like all dictators, got into the
government by making decisions that the people like. But once he got into the government, he abused
his power to do things that didn t help the general public, only who he wanted to help. Once firmly in
power, the leader of this society began planning for the ending of the struggle between the different
races of the society. (Secret Society #1) This end of struggle was him eliminating them completely...
That s definitely corruption if I ve ever seen it. Probably the reason with the most catastrophic results
in civilizations. Stories of corrupted leaders in civilizations are the most horrific and memorable. This
reason will probably never be taken character, there will always be corrupted people who gain

The Organizational Learning Strategy And How It Is...
This paper will summarize the organizational learning strategy and how it is significant as well as
essential, specifically in the course of the progression periods of a company, or once new technology
or new techniques within an industry are implemented. As a result, organizational learning has
established itself to be one of the most efficient ways for an entire company, a division or a team to
accept a wide range of new polls, tactics and concepts to allow for growth and improvement (Senge,
1990). Thus, when comparing to traditional learning techniques, or classrooms, individual learning
schedules and other techniques are employed, organizational learning has proven itself to be far more
efficient and effective overall, while costing less time and money among other resources.
Nonetheless, Senge (1990) states that when working out an organizational learning strategy, there s
one objective above all that must be considered. Setting clear and concise goals, as by means of all
impartialities, is utmost significance. Upon conducting a training needs assessment, or planning out
how organizational learning will be disseminated, and eventually figuring out what the final result in
goal should be, clear and present goals for each and every step, as well as an ultimate goal, are
important to management along with organizational strategy.

The Overall Affect Of School Cancellations On The Class...
One thing that I learned this week was the overall affect of school cancellations on the class syllabus.
Mr. Allen s strategy for me is to teach every day, but to use the majority of his content prepared and
lesson plans. However, with that being said, Mr. Allen and I have gone through each and every day to
plan the lessons until March 6th, which is when I leave. The difficulty that has arisen is the amount of
snow days that Brewer Community School has had. Last weeks two cancellations caused two very
important activities to have to be thrown out and modify the week. Mr. Allen plans his units to only
last a week and on Fridays, quizzes are taken to check for understanding. We were lucky that last
week only had two days worth of notes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is both sad and frustrating, as there was a tremendous amount of work put in to the planning
process. In the beginning I was looking forward to snow days, as they seemed like a break from
teaching, but now I look at snow days and think how much of a head ache they are. It is nice to have a
day off from school, but the amount of work put into planning is essentially wasted and free time that
a teacher could have had is gone. Therefore, I am no praying that there are no more snow days and
even if I am ever a teacher, I hope there is not, as time is wasted and overall, all that a teacher gets out
of a snow day is a headache from frustration and re planning. Looking into the future, I believe that I
will plan mini lesson plans for early release days, morning delays and even try to modify lesson plans
for snow cancellations. Mr Allen, like myself, like to plan everything out and the thought of a class
going ahead of another would stress me out, so in the event of an early release, or even morning delay,
I believe that I will have lesson plans for this event that are connected to the material, but not

Auto Repair Shops
Worrying whether or not you were overcharged for your car repair is an awful feeling. There s tons of
advice on how to avoid getting ripped off, but few discuss the actual car repair prices. We really need
to look at the charges on a car repair estimate or auto repair invoice to determine if we re paying too
much.
The focus needs to shift from giving outdated and ineffective advice to addressing the specific
charges. Are they legitimate charges? Can they be justified by industry guidelines?
Now car repair estimates can be confusing. So let s break it down to get a better idea if your auto
repair shop is billing you appropriately.
First, a glossary of terms is in order, as the auto industry has a language of its own...

Lamb To The Slaughter By Roald Dahl
In Roald Dahl s, Lamb to the Slaughter, Dahl resembles the theme of the story to show the couples
deception. Dahl shows it by having the husbands desire to leave in an unsystematic way. It shows
dishonor and betrayal to the wife since she was 6 months pregnant and the only thing keeping her
happy was having a husband to take care of. Mary was the housewife, and Patrick was the husband.
Mary was always prepared with meals and comfort once Patrick got home from work. They both had
to do very little just to keep a smile on both of their faces, at least a fake smile. Patrick displayed
ignorance once he came home one evening, then mentioning how he wants to leave her. As you could
imagine the amount of shock Mary had in her, lead her to the decision she made by the end of the
story. Mary was very happy in life, she had a husband who she loved, a baby on the way, she thought
to herself what could possibly go wrong? Little does she know, when her husband walks in the door,
he s going to demand a divorce. When Patricks comes home, he gets his normal greeting and his wife
s condolence. Except, he was giving off a negative energy which Mary did notice. He seemed very
stressed, tired, and Mary was trying to help him and do everything possible to make him happy as she
watches him pound his whiskey in one sip. As hard as it was for Patrick to tell Mary the aching news,
this is going to be a bit of a shock to you, i m afraid he just had to spill it out. And he

Kant And John Stuart Mill
Mena Boyah
Philosophy Final
1.The ship s cook has asked us whether or not it is morally ok to kill and cook up some of the local
life to sustain ourselves while we shelter on this planet. I would like to pull up the philosophers from
our holographic archive that would argue that it is morally ok to do so. The three philosophers that
will aid me in my decision are Jeremy Bentham, Kant, and John Stuart Mill.
First let us start with Jeremy Bentham his philosophies are centered around the pain and pleasure
theory. Bentham would argue as long as the total amount of pain for the organisms is out weighed by
the total number of pleasure units gained by our crew than it would be morally acceptable to pursue
some lifeforms as food. However on the other hand if the organism in questions pain outweighs our
total pleasure than the opposite would be true.
The next philosopher I would like to call to the stage is John Stuart Mill, Mill s philosophy is centered
around the Utility or the Greatest Happiness Principle. This principle argues that we as humans never
desire anything but pleasure. With that being said if we are to argue that we need to acquire food for
the pleasure of our existence than it make moral sense to be able to harvest some life on this planet to
keep our existence going. However on the other side of the argument we shouldn t kill more life than
we need to survive, if we were to do this than it would void our moral principles of pleasure and move

A Research Study On The Frisian Language
For my research, I conducted an analysis of the Frisian language. Frisian is a part of the Proto Indo
European language family, specifically the Germanic branch in the Western Germanic tradition.
Frisian developed in the Western Germanic family and then it grew and changed from Old Frisian into
Modern Frisian. Frisian, unlike English, has no intervening steps between Old Frisian and Modern
Frisian: e.g. English developed from Old English, to Middle English, to Modern English.
According to classical sources, the Frisians traditionally inhabited the area between the Rhine or
Scheldt in the West and the Ems or Weser in the East. The province of Fryslân (Dutch/English:
Friesland) is one of the twelve provinces of the Royal Kingdom of the ... Show more content on

West Frisian is the largest and most viable of the Frisian speech communities. The most striking fact
about West Frisian, as opposed to East and North Frisian, is its relative uniformity dialectally speaking
(Markey: 2011).
It is in the realm of phonology that West Frisian evinces the greatest evolution from that of Old
Frisian. The morphology, while further simplified in directions foreshadowed even in Classical Old
Frisian, is not radically changed. In the literature it is quite generally assumed that Old Frisian is an
SOV language, i.e. a language with a subject (S) complement (O) verb (V) order in simplex sentence
structure. In this observational statement, V refers to non finite verbs essentially, since it is assumed
that these forms are indicative of the basic position of verbs (Studies in West Frisian Grammar: 2010).
According to the same book, it was noted that a number of cases of grammatical influence of Dutch on
Frisian were discussed, especially regarding a morphological example of this influence which is a
change in the system of Frisian diminutive formation. The syntax of the Frisian verbal complex differs
in several ways from the Dutch one. According to Besten and Edmondsen s paper from 1983, Frisian
shares an interesting property with other West Germanic languages in that main verbs are
accompanied by auxiliary verbs and/or modals occur in one cluster in sentence final

Essay on Environmental Ethics
Ethics is the study of what is right and wrong in human conduct. Environmental ethics studies the
effects of human s moral relationships on the environment and everything within it (Stanford
Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2008). The ethical principles that govern those relations determine
human duties, obligations, and responsibilities with regard to the Earth s natural environment and all
of the animals and plants that inhabit it (Taylor, 1989). The purpose of this paper is to reveal
environmental issues that are threatening the existence of life on Earth, and discus our social
obligations to refrain from further damaging our environment, health and life for future generations. I
will discus the need for appropriate actions and the ethical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These perspectives are anthropocentric or human centered and view all non human life as less
important than humans themselves. Environmental ethics challenges these beliefs by questioning the
assumed moral superiority of human beings to members of other species on earth (SEP, 2008).
Preservation of the environment is essential to the preservation of the human race. Global Warming is
the number one concern threatening the very existence of humans and everything within the
environment today. The human race is to blame for the destruction of the natural world. The
environmental issues that are threatening all human and non human life today, started in the industrial
revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction
of factories to mass produce products for consumers. These factories were powered by fossil fuels
such as coal, oil and gas. The combustion of these fossil fuels emitted great quantities of pollutants
that remain in the Earths atmosphere to this day and is the number one cause of global warming.
However, in ethics one cannot evaluate just one thing. In ethics, as in nature, everything is connected
to everything else (Partridge, 1998). Deforestation for agricultural purposes and the expansion of
human habitats is happening around the world. This

Race Based Hostility And Bias
Who Polices The Police?
I can t breathe, imagine having to hear your father, son, or brother desperately gasp for air while
murmuring those words, I can t breathe. It s heart wrenching, but now visualize him being viscously
choked from behind by a police officer. The predicament is startling and unseen. Your loved one has
surrendered but the officer has no intention of relinquishing his grip, restricting the airway, making it
incredibly difficult to breathe. Suddenly, the police officer forces your loved one s motionless body to
the ground, proceeding by mashing his face into the pavement. Slowly loosing conscious, he lifelessly
lays on the Staten Island concrete. Nobody performs CPR, not even the ambulance upon their arrival.
Your loved one is pronounced dead at the hospital, and the officer who stole his life walks a free man.
Race based hostility and bias is a major national issue affecting our democracy, and racial hostility
between minorities and the police is a significant societal problem (Police Traffic Stops and Racial
Profiling: Resolving Management, Labor, and Civil Rights Conflicts). These encounters are becoming
far too frequent. Eric Gardner is amongst one of the countless African Americans who have been
racially profiled and murdered by law enforcement. Allegations of excessive force by police
departments across the country continue to populate headlines more than twenty years after the 1992
Rodney King incident (The Painful Legacy of Rodney King).

Compare and Contrast of Two Movie Versions of The Great...
For example, Leonardo Dicaprio s character of Gatsby was focused on emotions. I enjoyed that
Redford was very calm and cool about everything and the way he approached the character but,
Dicaprio made such an open and outgoing character which made the movie more entertaining.
DiCaprio captured Gatsby s intensity and charm and brought out the crazy mood swings and took his
character and the audience to a more emotional place. Both Robert Redford and Leonardo DiCaprio
had their own way of approaching the character and really selling Gatsby but Leonardo DiCaprios was
better. Another reason I prefer the 2013 version of the 74 is because of the bond and friendship Nick

played the powerful and rich Tom Buchanan, he made Tom s personality seem a lot better than Bruce
Dern. Bruce Dern was very soft spoken and it took away from his character and made him seem nasty
rather than intimidating he did not have the intense emotion that Edgerton had in the scene of Myrtle s
death either, he showed a few tears which made him human and made me feel sad for him but only for
a second and then I went back to not liking nor caring about him. Edgerton was able to play an
amazing roll in the scene of Myrtle s death he spoke a painful truth and appeared sympathetic the way

What Is The Yalta Conference
One of the most essential conferences that affected the world in its entirety was the Yalta Conference,
but the most important aspect of the Yalta conference were the different distinctive decisions made at
the conference. The Yalta Conference, codenamed the argonaut conference, transpired from February
4, 1945, to February 11, 1945. The occupants of the meeting were President Franklin D. Roosevelt
representing the United States, Joseph Stalin representing the Soviet Union, and British Prime
Minister Winston Churchill representing Great Britain. There were four major issues that would
dominate the conference, and ultimately decide the fate of the world post war. The Yalta Conference s

First, Stalin declared that the Polish question was a question both of honor and security. Causing
countless grievances, Russia s past desire to eliminate Poland made the Polish question a question of
honor, and in the last thirty years Russia had been invaded through Poland twice due to its location
which made the Polish question a question of security. Russia concurred with Churchill, saying that
Russia wants a strong, independent and democratic Poland , most likely because building a stronger
Poland answers both the question of honor and security. Afterward, Stalin stated that the Curzon and
Clemenceau fixed the Curzon Line, not Russians; moreover, Poland s borders would much rather be
extended to the West Neisse River. Finally, Stalin outright rejected the proposal of a Polish
government; he believed that the only path to creating a Polish government was through the consent
and advice of the Polish people. Stalin s concise counterargument set the standard for the topic of the
Polish question, and his resolute stance on the Polish government and Polish boundaries would remain

Soda Bottle Research Paper
The soda bottle is all to common today. It is made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a durable yet a
feather light product. PET is used in many diverse products, such as polyester fabric, cable wraps,
films, transformer insulation, generator parts, and packaging. It contributes to about 6.4 percent of the
packaging industry and 14 percent of plastic containers, including but not at all limited to the common
soft drink bottle. Making up for 43 percent of those sold, PET is the mostly used soda drink container.
Aluminum, comes in second with 34 percent, while glass, which used to be the sole and only
contender, is now only a petite percentage of the material used for bottling.

the latter substance is continuously removed during polymerization and used to make more PET. After
the PET mixture reaches the required viscosity (thickness), it is cooled to avoid degradation and

Reasons Behind the Failure of the Provisional Government...
Reasons Behind the Failure of the Provisional Government
The provisional government was brought about after the fall of the Tsarist government collapsed. This
was done purely because of lack of support for the Tsar and being the only major party. They were in
power for 8months and after making five serious errors; they were removed from power by force.
Kerensky ran the provisional government and it was his lack of judgement, just like the Tsars stupidity
and gullibility that let him down.
The first error he made was that he made no attempt to make the provisional government legitimate. It
never held a democratic election for fear of losing status. Even though at the start of their reign ...

This left an army that was majorly weakened and people thought that, like the Tsar he was a loser of
wars. The populations now have an even worse opinion of him and it was not good for his popularity.
Kerensky underestimated the Bolshevik s and Lenin. Once he had fought off their uprising with Lenin
s plan of Peace for the Army, Bread for the Workers and Land for the Peasants , he thought sending
Lenin to exile was sufficient. After Lenin accepted that he had lost his chance to become President, an
uprising in Petrograd (Kornilov Affair a point I will go onto in my next paragraph) means Kerensky
has to rearm the Bolsheviks in order to retain order. This leaves other countries and supporters of
Lenin with a chance to send him back into the country and to try and push the country into another
revolution (bringing about communism ideally). Lenin s plan to try to please as many people as
possible could come back into effect and this time it had a substantially negative effect on Kerensky s
position in Russian parliament.
Continuing from my last point, Kerensky s lack of judgement about the Kornilov affair was a
definitive error of his. He thought that the Bolshevik s were attempting to take over Russia by means
of a coup, thus he asked Kornilov to send part of his army to protect him. When they got there,

Durkheim Religion
Durkheim studied the general social aspects of religion, and made broad conclusions based upon his
observations of the roles religion played in societies; Geertz explored the intimate and personal
experiences of each individual, along with the more unique moods and motivations that dictated the
culture of each group. Both observers struck a similar tone in revealing the power which an icon, or
emblem, might possess within the heart of an individual, but differed in their conclusions as to the
degree of importance and level of impact which icons had upon the individual as well as the
collective.
Durkheim considered religion within a social context. His primary concepts involve the separation
between the sacred and profane; ideas of souls ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There exists a specified set of behavior which is generally discouraged, if not prohibited; there are also
desirable acts which receive approval from the group. Most discouraged acts seek to fulfill the desires
of the individual, while the approved acts are centered on the common good of the group.
Geertz studied religion from a cultural perspective. His studies were similar to Durkheim s in
recognizing the social structures, but included the elements of culture, which considered the individual
as well as the collective. Not only does Geertz identify the societal aspects of a religion, but he dives
deeper into the individual to attempt to discern the motives for behavior within the social
environment.
Geertz recognized religion as a controlling force or heavy influence within a culture. He found that
religion affected each individual deeply and changed them internally. Similar to concepts derived from
earlier studies of totemic groups, he found that an icon or symbol holds great influence over an
individual. Geertz s studies went into greater detail than Durkheim s on the overall impact that
symbolism affected the

  • 2. Liquidity Ratios and Activity Ratios 2.0 FINANCIAL RATIOS 2 Liquidity Ratios Liquidity ratios measure a business capacity to pay its debts as they come due. It also measures the cooperative s ability to meet short term obligations. Liquidity refers to the solvency of the firm s overall financial position the ease with which it can pay its bills. Because a common precursor to financial distress and bankruptcy is low or declining liquidity, these ratios can provide early signs of cash flow problems and impending business failure. The two basic measures of liquidity are the current ratio and the quick (acid test) ratio (Gitman, 2009). 1. Current ratios The current ratio is current assets divided by current liabilities. The current ratio ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No ratio, in fact, is especially meaningful without knowledge of the business from which it originates. For example, a declining quick ratio with a stable current ratio may indicate that a company has built up too much inventory, but it could also suggest that the company has greatly improved its collection system. Quick ratio is expressed as follows: Quick Ratio = Current assets Inventory / Current Liabilities Figure 2.2 explained the company s quick ratio has been improving from year on year from 0.51 in 2007 to 0.63 in 2008 and then increased to 0.69 in 2009. Quick ratio for 2009 is higher compared to the industry average quick ratio that is 0.65. Even though it has shown incremental improvement of their quick ratio and surpassed the industry average of 0.65 acid tests, the firm would have to sell inventory to meet its obligations. Comparing quick ratios over an extended period of time can be used to signal developing trends in a company. While modest declines in the quick ratio do not automatically spell trouble, uncovering the reasons for changes can help to find ways to nip potential problems in the bud. As for PJV s case, this is a good sign that the company progress steadily in improving its quick ratio over 3 years period in which may be resulting from its reduced inventories in 2009. The company s quick ratio can further be increased to a satisfactory level (at least 1:1) by improving its collection system and policy. Like the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Calculations h = height or thickness D = M/V V = M/D L*W*H = M/D Trial 1: This calculation solves for the height (h), or thickness, of the aluminum foil. (29.97 cm * 30.50 cm * h cm) = (3.82 g/2.70 cm2) (914.085 cm2 * h cm) = (3.82 g/2.70 cm2) h cm = 0.00155 cm The following calculations express the height (h)/thickness in millimeters and micrometers. (0.00155 cm * (10 mm/1 cm)) = 0.0155 mm (0.00155 cm * (10,000 μm/1 cm)) = 15.5 μm Trial 2: This calculation solves for the height (h), or thickness, of the aluminum foil. (9.60 cm * 6.10 cm * h cm) = (0.23 g/2.70 cm2) (58.56 cm2 * h cm) = (0.23 g/2.70 cm2) h cm = 0.0015 cm The following calculations express the height (h)/thickness in millimeters and micrometers. Data was then collected by using an electric balance for mass and a standard ruler for length and width. The formulas used were area = length * width, volume = length * width * height, and density = mass / volume. Thickness (height) was found simply by dividing mass by density, width, and length. The average of our three trials was not only calculated, but also found via the graph and slope.. A graph of area vs. mass was made with data points from our three trials. Using linear fit, the graph showed that the slope, which was then divided by the density. This calculation isolated the height in centimeters. The slope of the graph was 0.004181 g/cm2. This value shows the relationship between the area of the aluminum foil and its mass. The values plotted in this graph were used to calculate the thickness of the aluminum foil via an alternative method. Additionally, the graph had a correlation value of 1.00. This means that area and mass have a strong, direct relationship. According to pure calculations based upon the data alone, the thickness of the aluminum foil was 0.0016 cm. This is identical to the value of thickness provided by the aluminum foil company, Reynold s. According to calculations using the slope, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay On Nikola Tesla Nikola Tesla, noted inventor, engineer, machinist, and electrical pioneer was born in 1846 in what is now modern Croatia. His parents had five children which included siblings Dane, Angelina, Milka and Marica, in the family. His mother, Djuka Mandic, who invented small household appliances in her spare time while her son was growing up, spurred Tesla s interest in electrical invention. Tesla s father, Milutin Tesla, was a Serbian orthodox priest and a writer, and he pushed for his son to join the priesthood. Very little else is recorded regarding his early childhood or primary education. It is rumored, though, that the young Tesla was alternately cheerful and upbeat, or sullen and solitary. A general theme in his life, though, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While both men went on to continue developing sensational inventions, Edison is the man most credited in history books for his work. Tesla, on the other hand, was not an inventor seeking fame, but one who simply had a peculiar and uncanny view on the world. He was known to have outbursts of creative genius that led to days of non stop work, eventually resulting in his register(ing) over 700 patents worldwide. His most well known work revolved around the Alternating Current electrical theories. While this stood in direct opposition to the corporately backed efforts of Edison to promote a Direct Current network for electrical distribution, Tesla continued with the idea of transmitting electricity through the air, and free to all people. Edison scoffed at the idea, but even the newest research in the 21st century reveals that Tesla s notions are quite feasible. In the end, it is clear that his early education at home, his formal education on record, and his work with Edison all contributed to the foundation of Nikola Tesla s broad range of work. The public perception of Tesla was quite positive during his productive years, even earning the financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan for a while . Tesla s disputes with Edison grew over the years, though, eventually leading Tesla to abandon much of his work later in life, and he eventually died penniless in 1943 while residing in a New York hotel. By all accounts, he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Free Tutoring Is A Great Thing For The End Of The Day Essay Introduction A lot of parents would love to get their child the help they need for school, or extra help to get ahead if needed. Today there are a lot of tutoring programs out here, but all of them are not free. So, where does that leave the children and the parents who cannot afford these programs? It can leave that child at a lost because that child is not getting that extra help to become successful. Free tutoring is a great thing for several reasons. At the HOPE Academy they offer free tutoring for students who may cannot afford tutoring and are behind in their class. HOPE academy is making a differences in their kid s lives because it is not just tutoring at the end of the day. Social issues/challenges There are several social issues that pertains to my service learning, but the main issue I would say is getting the students the extra help that they need. Most of the students live in poverty or not the best of areas and getting access to the extra help for school are slim to none. Most of the students who come into the tutoring program at HOPE are not on their reading grade level or math grade level. This is nothing to come to be a shock because there are a lot of kids every year that fall behind their grade level. It seems to be the ones that do not live the best of areas. This is a serious issue because once a child is behind especially at a young age it can be very difficult to catch back up. Unfortunately, that child may never catch up to grade level if he or she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author uses a speaker who describes his disgust of the Bourgeois (the character) in the poem. Lawrence has the speaker use figurative language and rhetorical devices to express the disgust the speaker has of Bourgeois. Lawrence uses repetition, scientific diction, rhetorical questions, simile, defamiliarization, anaphora and a conceit to show the disgust towards the character in the poem. The ways the author uses literary works describes the Bourgeois using satire so it decreases the characters pride and presumption. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A conceit is an extended metaphor. The conceit begins when the speaker uses the metaphor, Nicely groomed, like a mushroom standing there so sleek and erect and eyeable (Line 21). The speaker begins by saying that the character is handsome and great looking but by comparing him to a mushroom makes the Bourgeois gross because he is talking about a poisonous mushroom that people may think looks good on the outside but on the inside it is rotten. Then Lawrence continues to add to the metaphor by having the speaker state, and like a fungus, living on the remains of bygone life sucking his life out of the dead leaves (Lines 23/24). Lawrence extends the metaphor and compares the Bourgeois to fungus. The speaker believes he is disgusting because fungi hold bacteria and also suck life out of dead leaves. Sucking life out of dead leaves compares to the Bourgeois being lazy and not working to earn his own money, instead he is taking the money from either his dead parents or relatives. The author then extends the metaphor even longer by having the speaker announce, he s stale, he s been there too long (Line 25). Lawrence compares him to something that is hard or gross to eat which shows the reader that the man is disgusting because any human wants to eat something stale or distasteful. The bourgeois is also compared to a fungi which is disgusting because it is parasitic. The quote, just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, in this event in history it s different. Two completely different people with different views on government can come to a common ground agreement. Not everything leads to war. The U.S. and the Soviet Union leaders engaged into a political and military stand off for thirteen days. There was a fear that this would lead to a nuclear war. • 9. The Future Of Fiber Optics James Gourley PHS 208 Barrett Honors Contract Additional Research Report The Future of Fiber Optics I. What is Fiber Optics? Fiber optic technology is often discussed in a wide range of conversations. This may be when people talk about TVs, phones, internet, or general technology. Fiber optics may also be referred to when talking about light and optics. An optical fiber is defined as a flexible, transparent fiber made by drawing glass (silica) or plastic to a diameter slightly thicker than that of human hair (Wikipedia). These fibers are used as a means of light transmission from one end of the fiber to the other end of the fiber and this is referred to as fiber optic communications. These fibers are quite technologically advanced because they have the ability to transmit more data and at a quicker rate than normal cables made of wire. There is also much less lost data when using fiber optic technology. Clearly, the benefits of fiber optics are much greater than traditional wired cables. Fiber optic cables are also used for the purpose of lighting and sensing. There are already many practical applications of the technology such as lasers, but these applications are just the beginning of the potential of this powerful technology. II. How was Fiber Optics Discovered? Fiber optics as we know it today has been the result of a long chain of inventions that all began with John Tyndall s 1854 discover that light can be conducted through water and bent. • 10. The Problem With The United States Constitution Allana Diego Mrs. Morris CLN4U 9 January 2015 The Problem with the United States Constitution According to the United Nations, human rights are defined as rights inherent to all human beings, whatever their nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. Humans all equally entitled to human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible. The fight to protect human rights has been ongoing since the creation of law. The question of what constitutes as a human right has been raised time and time again to redefine laws in order to accommodate groups who have had their rights violated. From women s rights to the rights of coloured people in America, social movements have been an integral part of creating change for the betterment of society. Today, the world faces yet another movement: the campaign for gay rights and the legalization of same sex marriage. The gay rights movement in Canada began in 1967 with the arrest of Everett George Klippert on the grounds of his homosexual conduct. He was the last person in Canada to be arrested for his sexual orientation, as his case sparked protests and demands for reform. Ten years later, the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada ensued as a direct result of this case. In the United States, the gay rights movement began much earlier. In fact, most teenagers today are exceptionally vulnerable to social conformity issues simply because social acceptance at their age is important. However, they are not the only victims struggling in this stage; there are also adults who are still swayed by the public opinions. This stage of social conformity, according to the Kohlberg s stages of moral development, is often referred to as the Interpersonal (tribal) conformity. This is applied to the large population of teenagers rather than the adults. In the book The Great Gatsby, the peers around Daisy had a tremendous influence upon her decisions. This subject has been around for centuries, forcing many to behave in a certain way that the society expects. The influence of peer pressure is still a topic has an impact to the world, especially the adolescents. The [s]ocial psychologists have suggested that one core function of compliance and conformity is to maintain group harmony ( Social Influence and the Brain:Persuasion, Susceptibility to Influence and Retransmission Cascio,Scholz,Falk) and this applies to many individuals who value public opinions more than their own. They seek to be good people and make an effort to follow the trend of the crowd. More often than not, this also relates to the confidence level of an individual, If those others agree with one s beliefs, one gains confidence in them; if they disagree, one loses confidence ( Conformity, Levine). This is indeed what many people face today from all different phases of life. Daisy, one of the characters in the book The Great Gatsby, is a perfect example of a person soaked into social conformity. From the beginning of her marriage life with Tom to the end of the book, she progresses into immoral stages of life. • 12. How Did Women s Lacrosse Change Lacrosse dates back all the way to the 1600 s when the Indians inhabited most of the North American land. What once was referred to as stickball by the Native Americans has changed frequently throughout the years, and is now a popular worldwide play sport. Lacrosse was first played in St. Valley, New York by the Iroquois, who were a Native American tribe. The game was originally created to praise their creator. Also to settle arguments between other tribes and to prepare for war. There were very few rules, there was no boundaries and unlimited players were allowed on the field at once. The Red Riding Hood and Grandmother s tale has produced ideas such as how a girl s life is looked upon in the past and how the male has the upper hand in most situations according to the stories. This is because needles are much harder to master and takes a lot of time to be good at it while pins are easy to use so this could mean that the male character has more experience than the female in life so he took the path of needles. In grandmother s tale the wolf puts the grandmother s blood and flesh for the girl to eat and drink. But the girl did not know anything about it so she drank it and while she was doing so the cat and the bird could represent society as they tried to stop her from drinking the grandmother s blood. But she did not listen to what they were saying and listened to the wolf who then tells her to take off [her] clothes and come to bed . By doing what the wolf says this may be interpreted as how the wolf is trying to transform the girl into being like him by doing what he does. This could also mean the male character has more sexual experiences than the girl. Because needles are harder to use than pins which mean without practice needles can hurt. Furthermore, in Red Riding Hood she was wearing red which is the colour of blood as she was a virgin she became the prey of the wolf. How does this represent a break with the past? Machiavelli brought up many controversial and untraditional points regarding what a kingdom or prince was allowed to do to maintain power. The most extreme, being that the prince wasn t held to any moral code in the practice of maintaining power. A prince must be prepared to ward off any conflicting power even if it means breaking traditional moral codes. In the mid and late 1990s, a string of shootings occurred. A growing number of specialists turned their attention to the school massacres in search of an explanation for these perplexing events. Nine students were killed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A man opened fire in a church, in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine people, including the pastor. Twenty seven were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Twelve were killed in the Washington Navy Yard. In Charles Dickens The Signalman the story starts by introducing the main character (a railway signalman). Another character is also introduced: the narrator. Dickens describes the signalman as a dark sallow man and as having a dark beard and heavy eyebrows . It seems that Dickens wishes to portray the signalman as a dark and ominous figure. Then he tells the narrator what is wrong: the ghostly sightings. This again makes us question his sanity. Dickens maintains this suspense that he has created with use of a leitmotiv of the red light, which is linked to the menacing apparition and maybe an accident on the railway. He compares a woman s beauty to a flower: the fairest flower that ever saw the light / men do not weigh the stalk for what it was / when they find her flower, her glory, pass (Daniel 6, 13 14). Through this metaphor, he shows how men view beauty in love. No one looks at a dead flower and thinks about what it used to be, rather, he or she looks towards other flowers that bloom with life and colour. This sonnet begins as an admiration for his subject s beauty, but it ends by telling the subject that when her physical beauty deteriorates, no one will love her. This poem reflects society s fixation on superficial beauty because it reminds women that they will never find love without external beauty, as a result of the superficiality of men in society. Both poems of the Renaissance Period assert the idea of perfection and the importance of physical beauty in love and relationships. Victorian era poets continue to propound the importance of superficial beauty. During this era, there was a continual belief in lust and sexual desires, evident in the rampant disloyalty that husbands showed their wives (Hughes). Wilfrid Scawen Blunt depicts this continual fascination of lust and beauty in his poem, I See You Juliet . The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Romero Britto Research Paper Romero Britto is a twentieth and twenty first century pop artist who was born in Recife, Brazil on October 6, 1963. He is the seventh child of nine and he is currently married to Cheryl Britto with a son named Brendan. Romero lived an adequate life with his brothers and sister as a child and was first introduced to art when he was just a young child. He did not capture the full understanding of becoming an artist for a career until the day his older brother showed him books that were about famous artists such as Toulouse Launtrec. Britto became inspired and began copying these fine art pieces from the books the next day. Originally, Britto embraced art to escape from the real world even through his early twenties when he was working to get into law school. He of course eventually dropped out of law school to study art in Europe. Britto traveled to Paris where he was introduced to the works and artistic techniques of Matisse and Picasso. Civilizations have been around the world for a long time, this is because all societies have to fall. (Manitoba k12 student notebook) When people inherited the crown, that weren t ready for it, the leader would be seen as corrupted. In Easter Island, the people had absolutely no power. And while this may not necessarily be a bad thing, the leaders on Easter Island made decisions based on how they would be directly affected, and not on how the people of the island would be affected. In the past, some people on Easter Island, namely the ruling class, were able to destroy other people and their homes, but now some societies can destroy everything (Peter Tyson) This ability to destroy other people and their homes seems to be a downscaled version of the world currently. In Nazi Germany, Hitler, like all dictators, got into the government by making decisions that the people like. But once he got into the government, he abused his power to do things that didn t help the general public, only who he wanted to help. This paper will summarize the organizational learning strategy and how it is significant as well as essential, specifically in the course of the progression periods of a company, or once new technology or new techniques within an industry are implemented. As a result, organizational learning has established itself to be one of the most efficient ways for an entire company, a division or a team to accept a wide range of new polls, tactics and concepts to allow for growth and improvement (Senge, 1990). Thus, when comparing to traditional learning techniques, or classrooms, individual learning schedules and other techniques are employed, organizational learning has proven itself to be far more efficient and effective overall, while costing less time and money among other resources. Nonetheless, Senge (1990) states that when working out an organizational learning strategy, there s one objective above all that must be considered. Setting clear and concise goals, as by means of all impartialities, is utmost significance. Upon conducting a training needs assessment, or planning out how organizational learning will be disseminated, and eventually figuring out what the final result in goal should be, clear and present goals for each and every step, as well as an ultimate goal, are important to management along with organizational strategy. In the beginning I was looking forward to snow days, as they seemed like a break from teaching, but now I look at snow days and think how much of a head ache they are. It is nice to have a day off from school, but the amount of work put into planning is essentially wasted and free time that a teacher could have had is gone. Therefore, I am no praying that there are no more snow days and even if I am ever a teacher, I hope there is not, as time is wasted and overall, all that a teacher gets out of a snow day is a headache from frustration and re planning. Looking into the future, I believe that I will plan mini lesson plans for early release days, morning delays and even try to modify lesson plans for snow cancellations. Mr Allen, like myself, like to plan everything out and the thought of a class going ahead of another would stress me out, so in the event of an early release, or even morning delay, I believe that I will have lesson plans for this event that are connected to the material, but not essential. Kant And John Stuart Mill Mena Boyah Philosophy Final 1.The ship s cook has asked us whether or not it is morally ok to kill and cook up some of the local life to sustain ourselves while we shelter on this planet. I would like to pull up the philosophers from our holographic archive that would argue that it is morally ok to do so. The three philosophers that will aid me in my decision are Jeremy Bentham, Kant, and John Stuart Mill. First let us start with Jeremy Bentham his philosophies are centered around the pain and pleasure theory. Bentham would argue as long as the total amount of pain for the organisms is out weighed by the total number of pleasure units gained by our crew than it would be morally acceptable to pursue some lifeforms as food. However on the other hand if the organism in questions pain outweighs our total pleasure than the opposite would be true. The next philosopher I would like to call to the stage is John Stuart Mill, Mill s philosophy is centered around the Utility or the Greatest Happiness Principle. This principle argues that we as humans never desire anything but pleasure. With that being said if we are to argue that we need to acquire food for the pleasure of our existence than it make moral sense to be able to harvest some life on this planet to keep our existence going. However on the other side of the argument we shouldn t kill more life than we need to survive, if we were to do this than it would void our moral principles of pleasure and move into the realm of ... Frisian is a part of the Proto Indo European language family, specifically the Germanic branch in the Western Germanic tradition. Frisian developed in the Western Germanic family and then it grew and changed from Old Frisian into Modern Frisian. Frisian, unlike English, has no intervening steps between Old Frisian and Modern Frisian: e.g. English developed from Old English, to Middle English, to Modern English. West Frisian is the largest and most viable of the Frisian speech communities. The most striking fact about West Frisian, as opposed to East and North Frisian, is its relative uniformity dialectally speaking (Markey: 2011). It is in the realm of phonology that West Frisian evinces the greatest evolution from that of Old Frisian. The morphology, while further simplified in directions foreshadowed even in Classical Old Frisian, is not radically changed. In the literature it is quite generally assumed that Old Frisian is an SOV language, i.e. a language with a subject (S) complement (O) verb (V) order in simplex sentence structure. In this observational statement, V refers to non finite verbs essentially, since it is assumed that these forms are indicative of the basic position of verbs (Studies in West Frisian Grammar: 2010). According to the same book, it was noted that a number of cases of grammatical influence of Dutch on Frisian were discussed, especially regarding a morphological example of this influence which is a change in the system of Frisian diminutive formation. The syntax of the Frisian verbal complex differs in several ways from the Dutch one. According to Besten and Edmondsen s paper from 1983, Frisian shares an interesting property with other West Germanic languages in that main verbs are accompanied by auxiliary verbs and/or modals occur in one cluster in sentence final ... Global Warming is the number one concern threatening the very existence of humans and everything within the environment today. The human race is to blame for the destruction of the natural world. The environmental issues that are threatening all human and non human life today, started in the industrial revolution and the discovery of oil The need to improve the quality of life resulted in the construction of factories to mass produce products for consumers. Kerensky ran the provisional government and it was his lack of judgement, just like the Tsars stupidity and gullibility that let him down.
