It is a new concept in world of Electricity measurement. This concept is not only beneficial for
electricity measurement but also has the capability to prevent theft and misuses of electricity. The concept
of IOT (Internet of Things) based prepaid energy meter is very similar to prepaid mobile system, you
recharge and spend Accordingly.
When the purchased units are used up by the consumer the meter disconnect the power supply
until the next Recharge. The system will automatically notify the consumer to recharge before zero balance
unit recharge will be done by the service provider.

HARDWARE DESCRIPTION
ARDUINO MICROCONTROLLER
 Arduino is an open source computer hardware and software and software company
project and user community that designs and manufactures single-board
microcontrollers and microcontroller kit for building digital devices and interactive
objects that can sense and control objects in the physical world.
GSM MODEM
 A GSM modem is a specialized type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and
operates over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone.
 From the mobile operator perspective, a GSM modem looks just like a mobile phone.
 When a GSM modem is connected to a computer, this allows the computer to use the
GSM modem to communicate over the mobile network.
 While these GSM modems are most frequently used to provide mobile internet
connectivity, many of them can also be used for sending and receiving SMS.
LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD)
 An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is an electronic display module and has a
wide range of applications.
 A 16x2 LCD display is very basic module and is very commonly used in various
devices and circuits.
 This means 16 characters per line by 2 lines and 20 characters per line by 2 lines,
respectively.
 LCD has two registers, namely, Command and Data.
4N35 OPTOCOUPLER
 Opto coupler are designed to provide complete electrical isolation between an input and
output circuits.
 The useful purpose of isolation is to provide protection from high voltage, surge voltage and
low level noises that could be produces errors in the output.
 Optocouplers also provides interface between different voltage levels. The input current of
an opto coupler can be photo transistor, LDR, photo diode and LASCR.
STATIC ENERGY METER
 An energy or electric meter is a device that measures the amount of electrical energy
consumed by a residence, business, or an electrically-powered device.
 Electric meters are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the
kilowatt hour.
ULN 2003
 It is basically a relay driver IC.
 It is a Darlington array having high voltages and high currents as well.
 It is made up of seven open collector Darlington pairs having common emitter which
shows ULN2003 has a capability of handling seven different relays at a time.
RELAY
 A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to mechanically
operate a switch, but other operating principles are also used, such as solid-state relays.
 Relays are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by a low- power signal (with
complete electrical isolation between control and controlled circuits), or where several
circuits must be controlled by one signal.
 Relays with calibrated operating characteristics and sometimes multiple operating coils are
used to protect electrical circuits from overload or faults.
Hardware Modelling
Main features of the prototype
The features of the developed prototype are:
 LCD display (showing the unit and balance)
 Communication between user and provider
 5 Volt operation (both control board and ON & OFF relay)
 Prepaid recharge of energy meter.
 Intimation for low balance.
 Power cut occur if there is insufficient balance
 Cost effective (₹1110/- approx.)
Practical Circuit
OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS
The system is being initialized. The
Arduino is trying to establish
connection with the components.
SYSTEM INITIALIZING
The Arduino establishes connection
with the GSM 900 module.
MODULE CONNECTION ESTABLISHED
GSM 900 module establishes
connection with the mobile
network for communication.
NETWORK ESTABLISHED
The system finally shows the
available unit and balance.
READING OF ENERGY METER
ADVANTAGES
 No need to wait for the month end bill.
 Remote access of meter reading.
 Less labor cost.
 Help shape country’s infrastructure.
 Top up more easily.
Future Scope
 It's a no only use for Electricity measurement but it also measure:
• Gas
• Water
 We will do add new feature to implement in digital measurement to
provide wireless communication to protect against theft.
Conclusion
 The IOT(Internet of Things) based Energy meter for calculating consumed power and
displayed in LCD has been achieved using.
 The consumed power is send through serial communication to the Virtual terminal
constructed in PROTEUS.
 This project can therefore enlighten management about wasted time, and
unnecessary trips, book keeping and billing because it gives an accurate accounting of
units driven because the prevention of malpractice.

  • 3. It is a new concept in world of Electricity measurement. This concept is not only beneficial for electricity measurement but also has the capability to prevent theft and misuses of electricity. The concept of IOT (Internet of Things) based prepaid energy meter is very similar to prepaid mobile system, you recharge and spend Accordingly. When the purchased units are used up by the consumer the meter disconnect the power supply until the next Recharge. The system will automatically notify the consumer to recharge before zero balance unit recharge will be done by the service provider. INTRODUCTION

HARDWARE DESCRIPTION ARDUINO MICROCONTROLLER  Arduino is an open source computer hardware and software and software company project and user community that designs and manufactures single-board microcontrollers and microcontroller kit for building digital devices and interactive objects that can sense and control objects in the physical world.
  • 7. GSM MODEM  A GSM modem is a specialized type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and operates over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone.  From the mobile operator perspective, a GSM modem looks just like a mobile phone.  When a GSM modem is connected to a computer, this allows the computer to use the GSM modem to communicate over the mobile network.  While these GSM modems are most frequently used to provide mobile internet connectivity, many of them can also be used for sending and receiving SMS.
  • 8. LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY (LCD)  An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen is an electronic display module and has a wide range of applications.  A 16x2 LCD display is very basic module and is very commonly used in various devices and circuits.  This means 16 characters per line by 2 lines and 20 characters per line by 2 lines, respectively.  LCD has two registers, namely, Command and Data.
  • 9. 4N35 OPTOCOUPLER  Opto coupler are designed to provide complete electrical isolation between an input and output circuits.  The useful purpose of isolation is to provide protection from high voltage, surge voltage and low level noises that could be produces errors in the output.  Optocouplers also provides interface between different voltage levels. The input current of an opto coupler can be photo transistor, LDR, photo diode and LASCR.
  • 10. STATIC ENERGY METER  An energy or electric meter is a device that measures the amount of electrical energy consumed by a residence, business, or an electrically-powered device.  Electric meters are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour.
  • 11. ULN 2003  It is basically a relay driver IC.  It is a Darlington array having high voltages and high currents as well.  It is made up of seven open collector Darlington pairs having common emitter which shows ULN2003 has a capability of handling seven different relays at a time.
  • 12. RELAY  A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to mechanically operate a switch, but other operating principles are also used, such as solid-state relays.  Relays are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by a low- power signal (with complete electrical isolation between control and controlled circuits), or where several circuits must be controlled by one signal.  Relays with calibrated operating characteristics and sometimes multiple operating coils are used to protect electrical circuits from overload or faults.
  • 13. Hardware Modelling Main features of the prototype The features of the developed prototype are:  LCD display (showing the unit and balance)  Communication between user and provider  5 Volt operation (both control board and ON & OFF relay)  Prepaid recharge of energy meter.  Intimation for low balance.  Power cut occur if there is insufficient balance  Cost effective (₹1110/- approx.)
  • 15. OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS The system is being initialized. The Arduino is trying to establish connection with the components. SYSTEM INITIALIZING The Arduino establishes connection with the GSM 900 module. MODULE CONNECTION ESTABLISHED
  • 16. GSM 900 module establishes connection with the mobile network for communication. NETWORK ESTABLISHED The system finally shows the available unit and balance. READING OF ENERGY METER
  • 17. ADVANTAGES  No need to wait for the month end bill.  Remote access of meter reading.  Less labor cost.  Help shape country’s infrastructure.  Top up more easily.
  • 18. Future Scope  It's a no only use for Electricity measurement but it also measure: • Gas • Water  We will do add new feature to implement in digital measurement to provide wireless communication to protect against theft.
  • 19. Conclusion  The IOT(Internet of Things) based Energy meter for calculating consumed power and displayed in LCD has been achieved using.  The consumed power is send through serial communication to the Virtual terminal constructed in PROTEUS.  This project can therefore enlighten management about wasted time, and unnecessary trips, book keeping and billing because it gives an accurate accounting of units driven because the prevention of malpractice.
