Fritz Zwicky discovered evidence of dark matter using the virial theorem. The virial theorem relates kinetic and potential energy, and Zwicky observed galaxy clusters had 400 times more mass than expected. Other evidence includes galaxy rotation curves, galaxy velocity dispersions, galaxy clusters and gravitational lensing, and structure formation. There are two main kinds of dark matter - baryonic dark matter made up of baryons like protons, and nonbaryonic dark matter including hot dark matter made of ultrarelativistic particles like neutrinos, warm dark matter made of relativistic particles, and cold dark matter made of non-relativistic particles.
