This document discusses the management of amputation stumps. It notes that optimal recovery requires a multidisciplinary team to ensure wound healing, reduce edema, manage pain, shape the stump, and prepare for prosthetics. Pre-prosthetic rehabilitation includes cardiovascular training, upper body and core strengthening, and early mobility exercises. Edema is reduced through compression therapy and rigid dressings to accelerate wound healing and stump shaping. The optimal time for prosthetic fitting considers volume reduction of the stump. Soft dressings include bandages and stockings, while rigid options include plaster casts and immediate post-op prosthetics. Removable rigid dressings and compression therapy are also discussed.
