1. Rescuing a person who has fallen overboard depends on several factors, including the experience of the rescue team, ship maneuverability, engine type, location of lifeboats, visibility, sea conditions, and navigational hazards.
2. Upon someone falling overboard, the captain must ready the engine and lifeboat, change course to position the ship out of the wind relative to the person, and lower the lifeboat to retrieve them.
3. In calm weather, the ship is stopped upwind of the person to shelter them from waves as the downwind lifeboat is lowered to pick them up and return them to the ship. Thermal protective aids are provided.
