Integrative Case Study
Due 9/5/10
Case Information:
You work for HydroTech, a large manufacturer of high pressure industrial water pumps. The firm
specializes in natural disaster services, ranging from pumps that draw water from lakes, ponds,
and streams in drought stricken area to pumps that remove high water volumes in flooded area.
You report directly to the CFO. Your boss has asked you to calculate HydroTech s WAAC in
preparation for an executive retreat. Too bad, you are not invited, as water pumps and skiing are on
the agenda in Sun Valley, Idaho. At least you have an analyst on hand to gather the following
required information:

3. Calculate the cost of equity capital using the CAPM, assuming a market risk premium of 5%.
Using CAPM: Risk Free Rate = 6%; Market Risk Premium = 5%; Beta = 1.2
Cost of Equity = Risk Free Rate + Equity Beta * Market Risk Premium
Cost of Equity = 6% + 1.2 * 5%
Cost of Equity = 0.06 + 1.2 * 0.05
Cost of Equity = .12
Cost of Equity = 12%
HydroTech s cost of equity using CAPM is 12%.
4. Using a tax rate of 35%, calculate HydroTech s effective cost of debt capital.
Cost of Debt = 7%; Tax Rate = 35%
Effective cost of debt capital = Cost of debt * (1 tax rate)
Effective Cost of Debt Capital = 7% * (1 35%)
Effective Cost of Debt Capital = 0.07 * (1 0.35)
Effective Cost of Debt Capital = 0.07 * (0.65)
Effective Cost of Debt Capital = 0.0455
Effective Cost of Debt Capital = 4.55%
HydroTech s Cost of Debt Capital is 4.55%.
5. Calculate HydroTech s WACC
Weight of Equity = 71%; Equity Cost of Capital = 12%; Weight of Debt = 29%; Debt Cost of
Capital = 4.55%
WACC = (Weight of Equity * Equity Cost of Capital) + (Weight of Debt * Debt Cost of Capital)
WACC = (71% * 12%) + (29% * 4.55%)
WACC = (0.71 * 0.12) + (0.29 * 0.0455)
WACC = 0.0852 + 0.013195
WACC = 0.098395
WACC = 9.8395% HydroTech s WACC is 9.8395%.
6. When is it appropriate to use this WACC to evaluate a new project?
WACC is the weighted average cost of capitaland provides firms with the idea of the proportion of

Case Study The Atlantic Division
A Divisional Previews The Atlantic Division 1. Boston Celtics With the big offseason
acquisition of Al Horford, the Celtics are hoping to change their recent playoff history; the last
two seasons have been two one and done, getting swept by the Cavaliers and losing to the
Hawks in six respectively. A big hole that the previous two Celtics team had was at the center
position. Night in and night out, the center position was among the worst in terms of
production. With Al Horford now on the roster that hole is presumably filled. No longer will
Celtics fans have to rely on the often out of shape Jared Sullinger to bang down low against the
much bigger, more athletic big men that opposing team s possess. The presence of Horford also
clarifies Kelly Olynyk s role with the team Prior to Horford s arrival, Olynyk was in and out of
the starting lineup, often splitting time with Sulliger. Being in a clear cut role as the second unit
center will only help Olynyk develop as a player.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

out about his team is who is the definitive second unit point guard. With Terry Rosier, Marcus

of who wins the job, all four will likely see minutes, as Stevens is one of the most creative coaches

Cilia Is An Irreducibly Complex System
Irreducible Complexity is an idea sparked debates with scientists for generations. This is the notion
that a complex part of an organism could not have evolved over a long period of time since it
would not have contained all the key components to keep it functioning. Darwin himself knew that
his theory of evolutionwas hanging by a thread when he said, If it could be demonstrated that any
complex organism existed that could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive,
slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. One of these irreducible complex
organisms is Cilia. Cilia are hair like structures that are usually used to move structures around
inside of an organism within liquids. The cilia are consequently able... Show more content on

We could not just have the microtubules for they cannot not bend, it would not make any sense to
have bridges because the microtubules would still not bend, and if we only had the arms that
move the microtubules they would just break apart from each other because there were no
bonding bridges . As we can see, the cilia are an irreducibly complex system.
Another irreducibly complex system is the eye. The eye is a complex system made up of multiple
different functions. The eye consists of Cornea, the Iris, the lens, the Retina, and Optic Nerve. The
Cornea is a tough outer shell around the outside of the eye. This refracts light as it enters the eye.
The Iris controls how much light enters the pupil. The Lens focuses light into the retina. The
Retina is where the light receptors are. The Optic Nerve sends the images back to the brain where
they form an image.
So, as you can see, every one of these functions is needed to complete a functioning eye. It would
be hard to see how the eye could have done its job effectively if it evolved slowly over time. Each
one of these parts is very fragile and even the smallest altercation could destroy all

A Free Market Economy Is Better Than Command Economy Essay
A Free market economy is better than Command economy Free market and Command economy are
the two major economy system. It has sparked years of controversies among individuals over which
system is better. However, no agreement has been reached. Meanwhile, it is obvious that free
market economy predominates all around the world as the majority of countries are following an
economy which free market process the dominating position. The significant difference between is
whether government intervention of economy exists. For command economy, the state has the
right for all economy decisions, including planning and adjusting. Properties are owned by the
government. The other extreme situation is the free market economy, where the government do not
place any intervention. However pure command economy as well as free market economy do not
exist in the world that is also agreed by Samuelson (2010). Throughout the world, free market
economy functions are much more popular as it is the fundamental of capitalism. As the majority
of the world economies are mixed economy, the features of command economy cannot be ignored.
This essay tends to distinguish the difference between two extreme economies from economic
prospects as well as politic prospects which are inseparable. Economic prospects are divided into
three parts. The first part is about economic growth. In command economy, the government planned
the demand and supply as well as resources distributions, which makes it easier

Definition Of Love At First Sight
Have you ever seen some one for the first time and felt like they were the one? Did you know if
they were really the one ? Do you know what love is? Was it love at first sight? Some people may
claim it was love at first sight and some may claim it was not. There are many arguments against
love at first sight, which most do not believe in it. Loveat first sight can be known to be an
instantaneous attraction to someone or something. That definition sounds a lot like lust, does it
not? Lust is having a very strong sexual desire for someone. Now, love at first sight is more
instant than lust, but they both have a similar definition. You cannot fall in love with some one by
looks therefore love at first sight is not real. There are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the essay, The loss of the Creature, a man by the name of Garcia Lopez found what is now
known as the Grand Canyon and thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world he has
ever seen. Nobody could ever understand how beautiful he thought it was. Relating back to
Love at first sight, this shows you can love the looks of something at first sight but cannot
necessarily fall in love at first sight. Not everyone has the views or opinions of looks. For
example, a tourist had wanted to see the Grand Canyon his whole life and when he finally got
the chance to see it, he was very disappointed. He expected the Grand Canyon to be what he saw
in pictures and postcards. After he realized it wasn t what he expected, he somewhat regretted
going. This is what I believe love at first sight is. You do not know what to really expect and once
you learn more about the person, you are disappointment because it is not what you expected.
Having expectations are not always good, they can lead to

Black Gibbon Research Paper
Introduction
Considered to be the world s greatest acrobats, the endangerment of gibbons proves to be a very
big deal. Using their powerful ability to brachiate, they can leap distances of 40 feet at speeds of
up to 35 mph while 200 feet above the ground, greater than any trapeze artist in our days. These
important primates include some of the rarest in the world, such as the Eastern black gibbon.
(Gibbon Conservation Center, 2012). These omnivorous mammals weigh from 9 to 25 pounds, and
won t reach over 25 inches in size. Unfortunately, most gibbon species are highly endangered. (All
About Wildlife, 2014)
Natives to the forests of Southeast, South and East Asia, gibbons can be found in Thailand, China,
Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia (Gibbon
Conservation Center, 2012). Gibbons are highly adapted to life in the trees and rarely ever will
come down to the ground. Their hook shaped hands, long arms, and powerful legs allow for
brachiating at amazing heights and distances. While brachiating, gibbons can move at speeds up to
35 miles an hour (All About Wildlife, 2014).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

cream coats with white markings on their hands, faces, or feet and do not have tails. Gibbons love

Violent Video Games And Violence Essay
Recent outbursts of violent crimes committed by youths has raised concerns as to what caused the
corruption of these minors. Of all adolescents aged 12 17, 97% play video games in some form,
and of these video games, 85% contain violence to some degree. With news covering a slue of
monstrous acts committed by children, many people began to direct the blame on violent video
games. These accusations claimed that the disturbing acts witnessed while playing video games
was corrupting youths can causing them to execute heinous crimes. However, newer, well
developed ideas have began to shift the blame from violent to video games to other extenuating
circumstances. Common misconceptions, analysis of youth crimestatistics, and new scientific
studies showcase how violent video games do not cause youths to display violent and aggressive
behavior.
First, misconceptions and flawed studies have guided the public into believing that video games
are the root of vicious adolescent crime. Past studies have indicated that in fact a link does exist
between violent video games and violent crime; however, these studies have apparent issues.
Many of these studies, failed to prove a legitimate cause and effect between the two variables. The
largest problem is that these studies base their findings off means of testing aggression in children
that do not correspond with violent in reality. For example, one study evaluated aggression by
timing the duration in which someone would inflict a loud noise at another person. In reality, it is
extremely difficult to assess a person s aggression in a simulated experiment that will produce
legitimate results because it is not a realistic scenario in the real world. Furthermore, the
consequences of afflicting someone with a loud sound are not equivalent to the consequences of
committing a mass shooting. Another major misconception is that school shootings are a direct
effect of playing violent video games. The issue with that philosophy is that it fails to account for
other variables that can lead to violent outbursts such as personality traits, genetics, and home
environment. Overall, these misconceptions blame video games as the sole problem, distorting the
view of video games

Why Is It Important To Take A Class Rank
Class rank is a common award for many high school students in America. Many students take
these class ranks very seriously, and want nothing more by the end of their high school career
then to be high up in their class rank. Schools use this rank to reward students in their schools. In
Green, for example, we honor these Top 25 students with a reward, and a nice dinner banquet. Yet
with these expectations to get into that Top 25 of your class, or trying to get the Valedictorian or
Salutatorian award, comes with a tremendous amount of stress, competition between you and your
peers, manipulation of your schedule, and pressure that gets thrown on you by yourself and your
family. Striving to become part of that elite group of students in Top 25 leads to a ton of stress and
more pressure than most high schoolstudents can handle. Students stress themselves out over every
homework due, and all the tests they needto study for. They do this for all five or six classes they
are taking. Yes, all the homework that you do and the tests you take are all important, but when it
comes to a 5 point homework that is taking hours to do, or else your grademight slip and your spot
in the coveted Top 25 might disappear, then school starts to become too stressful.... Show more

You feel pressure to get everything done, and have it done to perfection. If you miss a
homework assignment your parents get on you, might discipline you, to make sure it doesn t
happen again. Then, you feel pressure to do even better in school. I admit I feel pressure to do
well in school, but not like some people. Some people feel like if their grade is anything less than
an A then they have failed that class. Sometimes that s just them; sometimes that s because of their
parents. The pressure put on students to get that good grade is overwhelming, and the pressures
and expectations to be in the Top 25 are unreal and even

Abuse In Cults
Since europeans have arrived in America women have been abused by various cults. Through
the different cults women are abused and used in different ways. Cults are not only religious
groups but are groups who have certain beliefs and dilemmas. Cults can rein from the religious
groups like christianity to certain groups like the pueblos. Multiple cases have been found where
history has proven that women have been abused in cults from the 1500 s all the way till today.
This is a problem that we want to discuss and come up with a solution. In the Era of

The Government forced them to be reeducated in the values and dominant ways of American
culture. Several thousand children were taken from their parents control and sent to schools
where they were forced to stop dressing, speaking, thinking, and believing like Indians . Half of
the students were girls and it was important for the Native girls to learn their new culture. One
way the Native girls were taught was they lived as house servants for white families. The goal of
the program was to save the children by destroying the Indian but it was hard to deter children
from their way of life. When the children disobeyed orders they would get punished. Trying to
get the children to forget about their culture was very hard. There is a story of two girls who tried
to run away, they were found and were beaten. Their legs would be tied as well as their hands
behind their back. They were put in the hallways so if they fell asleep or something, the matron
would whip them and make them stand up again. Parents fought to stop this coercive

In many ways, Leslie Feinberg s Stone Butch Blues does more than explore what it means to be
a part of the LGBTQ community. In many ways, Stone Butch Blues is a how to book just as
much as it is a lifeline for the LGBTQ community. It is a how to book in the sense it examines
how to be a member of the LGBTQ community, while at the same time revealing the follies of a
definitive correct way how. In doing so, Feinberg reveals not only the performative nature of gender
, but also how the concept of gender and strict binaries can be a destructing and limiting forced

What Are The Corrupt Leaders In The Middle Ages
The Medieval way of thinking, which gave kings absolute power and authority gave way to the
Renaissance thinkers. These men not only brought their questions to the sciences and the arts, but
also began questioning the corrupt practices of the church. The corrupt leaders of the Catholic
church required their parishioners not only to tithe their money, but also to pay for the priests
services, to buy indulgences when they sinned, and to pay for other services the church provided.
The corrupt leaders in the church also engaged in immoral practices setting a poor example for the
people who followed them. With the inquiring spirit of the Renaissance, the people began to

Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species in 1859. In this book, he explained his theory of
natural selection which is that members of species with the most desired ( best fit ) traits will
survive and reproduce. Eugenicists took Darwin s ideas of natural selection and applied them to
society and the human race. Some American and German scientists agreed the human race could be
cleansed by means of artificial selection and sterilization (Proctor 10 15).
In Germany, eugenics became focused on racial hygiene and was transformed into genocide. In
the beginning, Nazis targeted people with handicaps or mental illnesses, those who they felt had
real, medical justifications to be killed. In Grafeneck, Germany in 1940 approximately 10,000
mentally handicapped people or people with mental diseases were killed with toxic gas in the
course of the Nazi euthanasia program (Wunder 1). After this they moved on to other groups that
they believed tainted their Aryan race. The Nazis fabricated scientific reasons for killing gypsies,
Jews, blacks, and Jehovah s witnesses along with the handicapped, saying that their brains were
smaller and that they were inferior.

The Environmental Technology Program At S.a.i.t
The program that I have chosen to study is the Environmental technology program at S.A.I.T
and this is important not because I want to shut down all the dirty energy companies that work
in the oil and gas or coal sector but because I want to make them better and more sustainable so
that the resources will last longer. More people should think this way because the world needs
these companies to survive and it would be economic suicide to shut just oil and gas down, look
at what is happening right now and it is only a downturn. But if new technology is created and
new methods are put into place, then what is now seen as the worst form of energy,
environmentally it can be seen as something that is more sustainable with less of an
environmental impact. This is what my program focuses on, how to reduce waste and how to
treat the waste that is created, so when it is either released back into the environment or there is
a spill or leak that it will not be as harmful. The environmental technology program will help get
more women into the science field which will then advance them in the working world. This
program will draw women in because it can be seen less threatening than say a petroleum
technology program where it is mostly men. But we are taught how to do things in the lab, out in
the field, and behind a desk and in many different types businesses such as agriculture, water

because of that I will not let her speak. That came out wrong. The point is, Leslie is a great

she is making the wrong choice. Over a century ago, women embraced their rights and
independence as equals to men. Since the United States passed the 19th amendment (allowed
women to legally vote) with pride and happiness to achieve what they desire without the
obligation to a man s property or his strict previous perspective of the ideal women. As time
passed, something changed and women no longer admired and praise for their independence, but

embodying the vision of the ideal woman housewife and housemother. As a result of this, women
yearned for more purpose in life, rather than restricted to the societal norms which defined women
worthiness, or the capability of women. Women are beginning to become more independent,
breadwinners, and in general, taking the roles of standard male figures. As a result, society is
beginning to discourage women for their hard work, instead of encouraging women as a whole to

Diagnosis Culture is the most common diagnostic test for gonorrhea, followed by the
deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probe and then the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and
ligand chain reaction (LCR). The DNA probe is an antigen detection test that uses a probe to

criterion standard for diagnosis at all potential sites of gonococcal infection. Cultures are
particularly useful when the clinical diagnosis is unclear, when a failure of treatment has occurred,
when contact tracing is problematic, and when legal questions arise. In patients who may have
DGI, all possible mucosal sites should be cultured (eg, pharynx, cervix, urethra, rectum), as should

Essay on Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering, also known as bioengineering , is a branch of engineering that combines
the design and problem solving techniques of engineering with biological and medical sciences to
improve health related and medical problems. Bioengineers have made many positive changes in
many lives today. By designing live saving objects such as artificial hearts, dialysis machines, and
surgical lasers bioengineers have helped save many lives. Biomedical engineers dates back to over
3000 years with the Egyptians. Egyptians created a wooden prosthesis to replace the big toe. Since

Television has been one the most influential pieces of technology as a source for entertainment.
During the earliest days of Televisions introduction into society, there were always shows

Speed Humps Research Paper
There is a tendency for the public to refer to any permanent object placed in a roadway for the
purpose of slowing the speed of vehicles as a speed bump. However, what some people call speed
bumps are actually speed humps or speed cushions. Understanding the differences between these
three types of speed impediments can help you determine which will suit your needs the best.
Speed Bumps
Speed bumps are the most widely used method of reducing the speed of traffic. They are also the
most aggressive method, normally used to force traffic to keep speeds below 10 miles per hour.
Speed bumps are primarily found in parking lots, traffic lanes in apartment complexes and in
residential subdivisions, which are all locations in which the posted speed limit is usually less than
10 mph. Because vehicles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most speed humps extend the entire width of the pavement when placed in a street. Although they
reduce speed, they allow for a continuous flow of traffic and are a less aggressive method of
controlling speed than speed bumps. Speed humps are often found near school crossings,
playgrounds and hospitals as well as some parking lots.
Speed Cushions
Speed cushions are often found on streets that are designated as emergency vehicle routes. They
are basically modified speed humps that have been divided so that vehicles with a wider wheel
base such as ambulances and fire trucks can straddle them and avoid delays in response time.
Buses can also straddle the speed cushions to avoid jarring the passengers.
Materials Used
Asphalt is the most common material used for speed bumps, speed humps and speed cushions on
both concrete and asphalt pavement. Asphalt is an economical, durable option that can be repainted
and resealed as often as needed to maintain visibility and aesthetics. Depending on the application,
plastic or rubber may also be used on concrete pavement.

The Relevance of Maps in Natural and Human Sciences
In my opinion, a map is a representation of real life situations scaled onto paper, used to further
explain, describe and simplify information. It can be in the form of a model, a diagram or an
actual map showing features of the earth. When my Geography teacher in Form 4 taught the class
about Population, we couldn t really grasp the concept of how to determine the stages of countries
in terms of their birth rate and death rate, so he used the Demographic Transition Model that shows
the stages of birth rate and death rate as well as population growth of countries to further explain
the stages of development in countries, in relation to population. After his explanation of the model,
15 out of 17 students stated that they fully understood the topic as opposed to 5 out of 17 students
in the class before the class was introduced to the model. This goes to show that the model
successfully simplified the knowledge and aided us in further understandingthe topic, thus proving
its convenience only when it simplifies knowledge. If it wasn t used to simplify the knowledge,
it wouldn t have been relevant in the situation. What I plan to do in this essay is to explore what
it means to simplify knowledge as well as discussing the relevance of maps in two areas of
knowledge; Natural Sciences and Human Sciences, as well as discuss the extent to which a map
simplifies knowledge.
Simplifying knowledge means breaking it down from a complex form to a form in which most

Population Control in China Essay
Population Control in China
Vigilantes abduct pregnant women on the streets and haul them off, sometimes handcuffed or

quotation shows one method how China tries to carry through its population control in a manner
which is very cruel and against human rights. We, Western people, do not understand why China
needs a population control and why this control has to be carried out so harshly.
But why had China to control its population? From 1949 on, Mao Zedong feared war with the

The desire for sons and the infanticides of girls lead to another problem. Today the imbalance
between men and women is already very high, and will even get higher in the future. For
example, in the Guangxi province 19 out of 24 births were boys (2001). Because of this imbalance
men will have a hard time finding a Chinese woman in the next couple of years.
But how does China try to carry out its one child policy? The techniques to enforce the one child
family are sometimes very cruel and violate human rights. First of all, families need an
authorization to have a baby. That means that when they decide to have a baby, they first have
to get an official authorization to have a child. To learn about unauthorized pregnancies, Chinese
officials pay informants to report them pregnancies of women. These informants can be
neighbors, friends, or even family. This method is comparable to what the East German Stasi
did in former times. Chinese people cannot trust anybody, because they can be reported to the
officials. Women are also only allowed to have children when they are married. Because of this
law, China passed another law that says that women are only allowed to marry with the age of
23. That means that women officially are allowed to have a child with 23 years. That led to an
increase of the average age of first birth from 20.8 years (1970s) to 23.6 years (1998). Another
method to enforce the one child policy is sterilizations. All women who gave birth to three

norms(Boundless, 2014). Simplifying it; Crutchfield in 1995 is quoted .saying that conformity is
basically labeled as yielding to group pressures (McLeod, 2007). The majority of people conform
to their surrounding standards without even noticing it(Advameg, 2014). Conforming is not
necessarily bad or good. Advameg (2014) gives the example of how people stop at a red light even

In this particular experiment, partakers were asked to choose a line that matched the size of one
of three different lines (Myers DeWall, 2014). Typically the participants would answer correctly,
choosing the string that was identical. During one query the two confederates involved in the
project would deliberately choose the wrong answer. Consequently during the same question,
around thirty three percent of participants conformed to the confederate s response one time or
more (Cherry, 2013). The thing that makes these results different from informational conformity
is that the correct answer was obvious. Solomon s project is an excellent case in point of
normative influence. Normative influence is Yielding to group pressure because a person wants
to fit in with the group (McLeod, 2007). Solomon Asch s experiment also gave insight of why
people conform. (Myers DeWall, 2014) People conform when they feel inept, or in a group
where every person has the same opinion. If another person agrees the results are different (Myers
DeWall, 2014). Solomon Asch also observed how people displayed extreme discomfort when
confronted with the decision to disagree with the group (Myers DeWall, 2014). Solomon Asch s
project showed signs of several conformity factors. First on the list is unanimity. More people

Greek Mythology And The Lightening Thief
It is a lovely day out, the bright sun shining down, the smell of beautiful flowers, the sounds of
birds chirping. Then, a chariot sweeps across a meadow, taking one unfortunate goddess, deep deep
down to the frightful underworld, to be seated by the King of the Dead,
Hades. Greek mythology is very interesting and can also be very interestingly weird. In the
lightening thief we see the very interesting part about Greek mythology. The lightening thief uses
the modern day society to tell the adventure packed story. In this essay I will give you an overview
of Greek mythology, along with a summary and analysis of The Lightening Thief.
Hero is the main theme of this story. We see the theme of hero throughout various parts of

the story. Courage, Love and sacrifice, and man vs. society all connect back to the idea of heroism.
Cultural and Historical Context
The Lightening Thief story is set in modern day time. Around 2000 2004 is where it all starts.
Although the setting is modern day, he author is telling Greek mythology, which began in
500 BC. Greek mythology is very interestingly different. Greek mythology also includes a number
of monsters and strange creatures such as the one eyed Cyclops in the Odysseus story, a gigantic
boar in the fabled Kalydonian hunt, sphinxes, giant snakes, fire breathing bulls and more. These
creatures may represent chaos and lack of reason, for example, the centaurs halfman and half horse.

Sexual Harassment on The Office
The Office was an NBC Mockumentary that for nine years followed the day to day operations of a
mid range paper supply company called Dunder Mifflin. The office manager was an eccentric, at

Michael led his employees through the gamut of human emotions. In some situations, in the real
world, many of the situations that Michael found himself in may have ended with him on the

The Renaissance Era The Baroque Era And The Baroque Era
Constantly, music has been a part of everyday life for centuries, dating back to the earliest Biblical
records. But over the years there have been many ages contributing to music. All of them were
significant to history, but only three were the most inspiring. All three discovered new ways to
compose melodies people around the world still listen to and perform. These influential eras in
music are: the Renaissanceera, the Baroqueperiod, and the Classical era. The subjects will be in
order from earliest and so on, starting with the Renaissance.
The Renaissance Era
Dating back to the 1400s, the Renaissance era started at the end of the medieval era. The era had
many major composers and came up with an abundance of new instruments. Most composers had
been involved in the church because secular music was not as popular at that time.
Music was difficult to distribute to people in the early 1400s. Consequently, the development of
the printing press in the early 1400s, made it easier to deliver music to a more broad scale of
people. One composer who took advantage of the printing press was Thomas Tallis. He used it
to make his own music sought after by the public. He was allowed exclusive rights to use
England s printing press to publish music (Green 1). Tallis specialized primarily in choir like
music. He was the most well known Renaissance artists of his time. A few of his works included
Salve intemerata virgo, Ave rosa sine spinis, and Ave Dei patris filia. Tallis even

The Obesity Epidemic
Introduction The World Health Organization defines being overweight or obese as abnormal or
excessive fat accumulation that may impair an individual s state of health. One asks themselves,
how being overweight or obese can be measured? Measuring or classifying an individual of
being overweight or obese can be done by measuring an individual s body mass index or BMI.
BMI is an index that classifies individuals to determine if they are either underweight, normal
weight, overweight or obesity. BMI can be easily calculated by an individual s weight in
kilograms divided by the square of individual s height in meters (kg / m^2). According to the
World Health Organization, an individual is classified by BMI, in the following order:
underweight = 18.5, normal weight = 18.5 24.9, overweight = 25 29.9, obesity = 30. BMI is
useful to measure population because it is standardized in both sexes and all ages in adults.
According to the WHO, overweight and obesity is the fifth leading risk global deaths. Being
overweight or obese can lead to diabetes, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular diseases (heart disease,
stroke) and certain cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). Epidemiologists and others in respect
fields have figured out the causes that lead to being overweight or obese. The main cause s an
energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention and the WHO have seen that globally an increased intake of energy dense

too technologically advanced, that the government promises to grant privacy but goes back on

Boston Celtics With the big offseason acquisition of Al Horford, the Celtics are hoping to change their recent playoff history; the last two seasons have been two one and done, getting swept by the Cavaliers and losing to the Hawks in six respectively. A big hole that the previous two Celtics team had was at the center position. Night in and night out, the center position was among the worst in terms of production. With Al Horford now on the roster that hole is presumably filled. No longer will Celtics fans have to rely on the often out of shape Jared Sullinger to bang down low against the much bigger, more athletic big men that opposing team s possess. The presence of Horford also clarifies Kelly Olynyk s role with the team Prior to Horford s arrival, Olynyk was in and out of the starting lineup, often splitting time with Sulliger. This is the notion that a complex part of an organism could not have evolved over a long period of time since it would not have contained all the key components to keep it functioning. Darwin himself knew that his theory of evolutionwas hanging by a thread when he said, If it could be demonstrated that any complex organism existed that could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down. One of these irreducible complex organisms is Cilia. Cilia are hair like structures that are usually used to move structures around inside of an organism within liquids. We could not just have the microtubules for they cannot not bend, it would not make any sense to have bridges because the microtubules would still not bend, and if we only had the arms that move the microtubules they would just break apart from each other because there were no bonding bridges . As we can see, the cilia are an irreducibly complex system. Another irreducibly complex system is the eye. The eye is a complex system made up of multiple different functions. The eye consists of Cornea, the Iris, the lens, the Retina, and Optic Nerve. The Cornea is a tough outer shell around the outside of the eye. This refracts light as it enters the eye. The Iris controls how much light enters the pupil. The Lens focuses light into the retina. The Retina is where the light receptors are. The Optic Nerve sends the images back to the brain where they form an image. So, as you can see, every one of these functions is needed to complete a functioning eye. It would be hard to see how the eye could have done its job effectively if it evolved slowly over time. Each one of these parts is very fragile and even the smallest altercation could destroy all ... • 9. A Free Market Economy Is Better Than Command Economy Essay A Free market economy is better than Command economy Free market and Command economy are the two major economy system. It has sparked years of controversies among individuals over which system is better. However, no agreement has been reached. Meanwhile, it is obvious that free market economy predominates all around the world as the majority of countries are following an economy which free market process the dominating position. The significant difference between is whether government intervention of economy exists. For command economy, the state has the right for all economy decisions, including planning and adjusting. Properties are owned by the government. The other extreme situation is the free market economy, where the government do not place any intervention. However pure command economy as well as free market economy do not exist in the world that is also agreed by Samuelson (2010). Throughout the world, free market economy functions are much more popular as it is the fundamental of capitalism. As the majority of the world economies are mixed economy, the features of command economy cannot be ignored. This essay tends to distinguish the difference between two extreme economies from economic prospects as well as politic prospects which are inseparable. • 10. Definition Of Love At First Sight Have you ever seen some one for the first time and felt like they were the one? Did you know if they were really the one ? Do you know what love is? Was it love at first sight? Some people may claim it was love at first sight and some may claim it was not. There are many arguments against love at first sight, which most do not believe in it. Loveat first sight can be known to be an instantaneous attraction to someone or something. That definition sounds a lot like lust, does it not? Lust is having a very strong sexual desire for someone. Now, love at first sight is more instant than lust, but they both have a similar definition. You cannot fall in love with some one by looks therefore love at first sight is not real. There are... Relating back to Love at first sight, this shows you can love the looks of something at first sight but cannot necessarily fall in love at first sight. Not everyone has the views or opinions of looks. For example, a tourist had wanted to see the Grand Canyon his whole life and when he finally got the chance to see it, he was very disappointed. He expected the Grand Canyon to be what he saw in pictures and postcards. After he realized it wasn t what he expected, he somewhat regretted going. This is what I believe love at first sight is. Using their powerful ability to brachiate, they can leap distances of 40 feet at speeds of up to 35 mph while 200 feet above the ground, greater than any trapeze artist in our days. These important primates include some of the rarest in the world, such as the Eastern black gibbon. (Gibbon Conservation Center, 2012). These omnivorous mammals weigh from 9 to 25 pounds, and won t reach over 25 inches in size. Unfortunately, most gibbon species are highly endangered. • 12. Violent Video Games And Violence Essay Recent outbursts of violent crimes committed by youths has raised concerns as to what caused the corruption of these minors. Of all adolescents aged 12 17, 97% play video games in some form, and of these video games, 85% contain violence to some degree. With news covering a slue of monstrous acts committed by children, many people began to direct the blame on violent video games. These accusations claimed that the disturbing acts witnessed while playing video games was corrupting youths can causing them to execute heinous crimes. However, newer, well developed ideas have began to shift the blame from violent to video games to other extenuating circumstances. Common misconceptions, analysis of youth crimestatistics, and new scientific studies showcase how violent video games do not cause youths to display violent and aggressive behavior. First, misconceptions and flawed studies have guided the public into believing that video games are the root of vicious adolescent crime. Past studies have indicated that in fact a link does exist between violent video games and violent crime; however, these studies have apparent issues. Many of these studies, failed to prove a legitimate cause and effect between the two variables. The largest problem is that these studies base their findings off means of testing aggression in children that do not correspond with violent in reality. For example, one study evaluated aggression by timing the duration in which someone would inflict a loud noise at another person. In reality, it is extremely difficult to assess a person s aggression in a simulated experiment that will produce legitimate results because it is not a realistic scenario in the real world. Furthermore, the consequences of afflicting someone with a loud sound are not equivalent to the consequences of committing a mass shooting. Another major misconception is that school shootings are a direct effect of playing violent video games. The issue with that philosophy is that it fails to account for other variables that can lead to violent outbursts such as personality traits, genetics, and home environment. Overall, these misconceptions blame video games as the sole problem, distorting the view of video games ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many students take these class ranks very seriously, and want nothing more by the end of their high school career then to be high up in their class rank. Schools use this rank to reward students in their schools. In Green, for example, we honor these Top 25 students with a reward, and a nice dinner banquet. Yet with these expectations to get into that Top 25 of your class, or trying to get the Valedictorian or Salutatorian award, comes with a tremendous amount of stress, competition between you and your peers, manipulation of your schedule, and pressure that gets thrown on you by yourself and your family. Striving to become part of that elite group of students in Top 25 leads to a ton of stress and more pressure than most high schoolstudents can handle. • 31. Speed Humps Research Paper There is a tendency for the public to refer to any permanent object placed in a roadway for the purpose of slowing the speed of vehicles as a speed bump. However, what some people call speed bumps are actually speed humps or speed cushions. Understanding the differences between these three types of speed impediments can help you determine which will suit your needs the best. Speed Bumps Speed bumps are the most widely used method of reducing the speed of traffic. They are also the most aggressive method, normally used to force traffic to keep speeds below 10 miles per hour. Speed bumps are primarily found in parking lots, traffic lanes in apartment complexes and in residential subdivisions, which are all locations in which the posted speed limit is usually less than 10 mph. Because vehicles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most speed humps extend the entire width of the pavement when placed in a street. Although they reduce speed, they allow for a continuous flow of traffic and are a less aggressive method of controlling speed than speed bumps. Speed humps are often found near school crossings, playgrounds and hospitals as well as some parking lots. Speed Cushions Speed cushions are often found on streets that are designated as emergency vehicle routes. They are basically modified speed humps that have been divided so that vehicles with a wider wheel base such as ambulances and fire trucks can straddle them and avoid delays in response time. Buses can also straddle the speed cushions to avoid jarring the passengers. Materials Used Asphalt is the most common material used for speed bumps, speed humps and speed cushions on both concrete and asphalt pavement. Asphalt is an economical, durable option that can be repainted and resealed as often as needed to maintain visibility and aesthetics. Depending on the application, plastic or rubber may also be used on concrete pavement. Choosing the Best Method for Speed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Relevance of Maps in Natural and Human Sciences In my opinion, a map is a representation of real life situations scaled onto paper, used to further explain, describe and simplify information. It can be in the form of a model, a diagram or an actual map showing features of the earth. When my Geography teacher in Form 4 taught the class about Population, we couldn t really grasp the concept of how to determine the stages of countries in terms of their birth rate and death rate, so he used the Demographic Transition Model that shows the stages of birth rate and death rate as well as population growth of countries to further explain the stages of development in countries, in relation to population. After his explanation of the model, 15 out of 17 students stated that they fully understood the topic as opposed to 5 out of 17 students in the class before the class was introduced to the model. This goes to show that the model successfully simplified the knowledge and aided us in further understandingthe topic, thus proving its convenience only when it simplifies knowledge. If it wasn t used to simplify the knowledge, it wouldn t have been relevant in the situation. What I plan to do in this essay is to explore what it means to simplify knowledge as well as discussing the relevance of maps in two areas of knowledge; Natural Sciences and Human Sciences, as well as discuss the extent to which a map simplifies knowledge. Simplifying knowledge means breaking it down from a complex form to a form in which most people would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

[Some] aborted babies cry when they are born (Steven Mosher). This quotation shows one method how China tries to carry through its population control in a manner which is very cruel and against human rights. We, Western people, do not understand why China needs a population control and why this control has to be carried out so harshly. But why had China to control its population? From 1949 on, Mao Zedong feared war with the United States or the Soviet Union. China s millions [of people] were the country s primary weapon against technologically superior enemies. Today the imbalance between men and women is already very high, and will even get higher in the future. For example, in the Guangxi province 19 out of 24 births were boys (2001). Because of this imbalance men will have a hard time finding a Chinese woman in the next couple of years. But how does China try to carry out its one child policy? The techniques to enforce the one child family are sometimes very cruel and violate human rights. First of all, families need an authorization to have a baby. That means that when they decide to have a baby, they first have to get an official authorization to have a child. To learn about unauthorized pregnancies, Chinese officials pay informants to report them pregnancies of women. These informants can be neighbors, friends, or even family. This method is comparable to what the East German Stasi did in former times. Chinese people cannot trust anybody, because they can be reported to the officials. Women are also only allowed to have children when they are married. Because of this law, China passed another law that says that women are only allowed to marry with the age of 23. That means that women officially are allowed to have a child with 23 years. That led to an increase of the average age of first birth from 20.8 years (1970s) to 23.6 years (1998). Another method to enforce the one child policy is sterilizations. All women who gave birth to three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conformity Influence The Way People Conform Factors that Influence People to Conform Conformity is the act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and and. behaviors to .group. norms(Boundless, 2014). The majority of people conform to their surrounding standards without even noticing it(Advameg, 2014). Conforming is not necessarily bad or good. Advameg (2014) gives the example of how people stop at a red light even though a law enforcer may not be around. A small amount of conformityis required to have an organized society(Boundless, 2014). Consequently during the same question, around thirty three percent of participants conformed to the confederate s response one time or more (Cherry, 2013). • 42. The Renaissance Era The Baroque Era And The Baroque Era Constantly, music has been a part of everyday life for centuries, dating back to the earliest Biblical records. But over the years there have been many ages contributing to music. All of them were significant to history, but only three were the most inspiring. All three discovered new ways to compose melodies people around the world still listen to and perform. These influential eras in music are: the Renaissanceera, the Baroqueperiod, and the Classical era. The subjects will be in order from earliest and so on, starting with the Renaissance. The Renaissance Era Dating back to the 1400s, the Renaissance era started at the end of the medieval era. The era had many major composers and came up with an abundance of new instruments. Most composers had been involved in the church because secular music was not as popular at that time. Music was difficult to distribute to people in the early 1400s. Consequently, the development of the printing press in the early 1400s, made it easier to deliver music to a more broad scale of people. One composer who took advantage of the printing press was Thomas Tallis. He used it to make his own music sought after by the public. He was allowed exclusive rights to use England s printing press to publish music (Green 1). Tallis specialized primarily in choir like music. He was the most well known Renaissance artists of his time. A few of his works included Salve intemerata virgo, Ave rosa sine spinis, and Ave Dei patris filia. Tallis even ... One asks themselves, how being overweight or obese can be measured? Measuring or classifying an individual of being overweight or obese can be done by measuring an individual s body mass index or BMI. BMI is an index that classifies individuals to determine if they are either underweight, normal weight, overweight or obesity. BMI can be easily calculated by an individual s weight in kilograms divided by the square of individual s height in meters (kg / m^2). According to the World Health Organization, an individual is classified by BMI, in the following order: underweight = 18.5, normal weight = 18.5 24.9, overweight = 25 29.9, obesity = 30.
