Word recognition is the reader s ability to correctly identify words without needing contextual aid.
People tend to recognize words faster if they are more frequent (i.e. more common in their everyday
language), a psychological phenomenon known as the word frequency effect. An example of a high
frequency word is the , whereas promiscuous , for instance, is a low frequency word. Similarly, people
tend to be better at correctly recognizing letters within words compared to isolated letters and to
orthographically illegal strings (i.e. nonwords, such as SUT ). This is known as the word superiority
effect.
Many models attempt to explain the different phenomena that arose as a result of studying reading.
The logogen model (Morton, 1969) aims to explain the word frequency effect in terms of low or high
thresholds. Each logogen contains a number of characteristics about given words, such as meaning,
appearance and sound. A logogen will be activated by psychological stimuli or contextual information
that triggers the most characteristics. When the activation level rises above the threshold level, that
word is selected. As there is no comparison between logogens, more than one response can be
triggered by one stimulus. High frequency words (those most commonly used), have a lower
threshold, meaning that they require less perceptual power to recognize and decode from the mental

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)
Diabetes is one the most critical medical issues of our time. According to the Center of Disease
Control and Prevention nearly 26 million Americans (approximately 8% of all Americans) have
diabetes and an estimated of 79 million adults are pre diabetes. Approximately $200 billion per year is
lost due to diabetes because of medical treatments and lost wages. Insulin resistance and the
dysfunction of beta cells are the two pathogenic hallmarks of the development and progression of
T2DM. Studies have shown that pancreatic beta cell functional mass is affected in T2DM (1, 2).
Secretion of insulin stimulated by glucose is lower in human islets of Langerhans isolated from
patients with T2DM than from normal individuals (1, 3). Knowledge of the molecular mechanism
underlying defects in beta cell function found in humans and animal models of T2DM is incomplete.
Without a more complete understanding of the mechanisms that regulate beta cell insulin secretion we
will be unable to develop new approaches to prevent and treat diabetes.
Physiological aspects of beta cell function Beta cells of the endocrine pancreas constantly monitor
glucose levels circulating in the blood and respond accordingly by releasing insulin. Glucose is the
primary physiological stimulus of insulin secretion. When blood glucose concentration is elevated,
glucose is transported across the beta cell plasma membrane by passive diffusion through glucose

The Student Transitional Empowerment Program
Thanks to the Student Transitional Empowerment Program (STEP), it has been very easy transitioning
to Mason. Everyday I ask myself what I would do if I did not have STEP. Nobody understands how
much I appreciate STEP for getting me ready for college, because I did not feel like a lost puppy one
the first week of school. Without STEP I would be coming into campus with only one friend, but
thanks to STEP I came into campus with over 30 friends, which I now call family. I have people who I
can study with, grab lunch with and people who I can participate in activities with. In addition, where
would I go in between my classes? Thanks to ODIME office, I have a place to relax and study in
between my classes. However, not everything has been flowers and sun shine, because I have had
some difficulties transitioning to Mason, two in particular. One being that I have to commute over 30
minutes from my house. In high school, it would literally take me two minutes to drive, now I have to
go through a mission to get to my classes. The second thing I am having difficulties with is, how there
are no school lunches and I do not have mason money from STEP. Personally, it is difficult to pack
lunch when I get home and in the mornings because I am to tired and busy to do so at both times, so I
go without food the whole day.
This fall semester has been very different from the summer semester for me personally. One reason it
has been different, is how the class lectures go at a slower pace.

contemporary society. FoMo is a concurrent issue in Australia (and internationally) amongst
teenagers, FoMo refers to a blend of anxiety, irritation, inadequacy, and depression while skimming
social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram FoMO is new, a concept brought about by the
digital era. WHY I CHOSE... I initially chose this area of investigation because i had no other ideas
for a PIP topic, time was running out, and so was my capacity for good ideas. However, with further
investigation and reflection on personal experiences into FoMo, I soon began to find myself becoming
more rapt with the phenomenon of how one photo or status update could impact an individual s self
concept and wellbeing. Secondary research described the nature of FoMo as feelings of inadequacy
and anxiety mainly catalysed by living in a Western Society. I thought it was interesting how even big
