Primary prevention aims to reduce exposure to disease and promote health in healthy individuals through activities like health promotion and disease prevention. Secondary prevention applies to those with symptoms or diagnosed disease, aiming to halt progression, reduce complications, and cure the disease through early diagnosis and prompt treatment. Tertiary prevention focuses on restoring functioning for those already affected by disease or injury through rehabilitation and referrals to therapies.

1. Levels of Prevention
I. Primary Prevention – to decrease rate of exposure of the individual or community. It
consists of activities which are undertaken before disease. It i also applied to generally
healthy person in order to keep them well
(a) Health Promotion
– Enable clients to maintain health and realize their full potential for development.
– Consist of activities aimed at maintaining and enhancing people’s physical, social –
wellbeing
(b) Disease Prevention
- protect patients or the other members of the public from actual or potential health
threats and their harmful consequences
II. Secondary Prevention – this applies to those who have symptoms and with diagnosed
disease. This includes halting disease progress, minimizing and shortening disease duration,
prevent or reduce complications, and bring about cure

III. Tertiary Prevention
- To restore patient to an optimum level of functioning. This consists of activities
which are done when disease process, an injury or a calamity has already exacted its
damage and ill effects with consequent disability or loss of function in verifying
degrees.

- To prevent relapse by integrating newly adopted behaviours into his of her
lifestyles. The person no longer experiences temptation to return previous
unhealthy behaviour
IV. CURATIVE
- Defined as care that tends to overcome disease and to promote recovery
V. Rehabilitative
- Emphasizes the importance of assistance of patients
