A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Teaching approach: I’ll use the communicative approach in order to give the
students the opportunity to use the language to communicate in real
situations.
Integration of skills: The four skills will be integrated. Reading and writing will
be developed by reading and writing texts. Listening and speaking will be
also developed through listening to the teacher and the classmates and by
reading and repeating vocabulary/ phrases. Communicative skills will be
developed by interaction.
Materials and resources: in the classroom we will use a photocopy.
Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: ICT will be present because
students will use their cell phones to look for new words on the online
dictionary or translator.
Seating arrangement: Students will be in their seats. They can sit in groups to
share opinions.
Assessment: what will be assessed and how: I’ll monitor all my students
through the lesson and I’ll check whether if they understand what I say or
not. I’ll try to make them repeat the different patterns and encourage them
to use the chunks meaningfully.
Warm up (10 minutes)
Purpose: To begin the lesson and create a comfortable atmosphere; to introduce
the students to the topic.
We’ll enter the classroom and we’ll greet each other. Students will sit in their seats.
To begin the lesson I will focus on the students. “Ok, in the previous lesson we
talked about your dream job. Claudio you told me that you would like to study to be
a history teacher! Could you tell me why?” I will let them try to answer and then I’ll
give them an example about me. ”I am studying to be an English teacher because I
like English itself. I like listening to music in English, I like watching films in English. I
love everything that is related with the language. What about you?” We’ll speak a
little about them.
Transition: “Ok! Now it’s time you know something about me and my dream job!”
Presentation (15 minutes)
Purpose: To Expose the students to the language; to enhance students’
3. communicative skills and to develop or improve comprehensive skills.
I will give the students a photocopy in which they will find a short text written by
me about what my dream job is and why. I will read the text while they read it and
then they will read it on their own to understand it better. Once they have read it I
will ask them some questions. “Well, can you tell me which is my dream job and
why? Which other things I like?”
My dream job
My dream job is to be an English teacher. Fortunately I am working as a teacher
now and I hope to keep doing it all my life. I chose English because I like everything
that is related to the Language. I love listening to English music and this helps me
improve my vocabulary a lot. I also like watching films and series in English. I always
try to keep English close to me. I also want to be a teacher because I like being with
people and help others understand the language.
Another job I would like to do is being a singer. I like singing since I was a child and
I have always dreamed of being a famous singer. But today I am a teacher and I am
really happy with it.
Transition: “I want to know about you now!”
Development (20 minutes)
Purpose: to develop communicative skills; to foster interaction and to check
students’ knowledge of new vocabulary.
Activity 1: In this activity students will have to write a text about their dream job.
They will use mine as example. “I want to know something about you. You will write
a text like mine to tell me about your dream job.”
Transition: “Great! Let’s share what you did!”
Closure (15 minutes)
Purpose: to raise students’ motivation.
At this stage, students will read what they wrote about them. “Great job! See you
next class!”
