 Teaching approach: I’ll use the communicative approach in order to give the
students the opportunity to use the language to communicate in real
situations.
 Integration of skills: The four skills will be integrated. Reading and writing will
be developed by reading texts and answering different questions. Listening
and speaking will be also developed through listening to the teacher and the
classmates and by reading and repeating vocabulary/ phrases.
Communicative skills will be developed by interaction.
 Materials and resources: in the classroom we will use the book with which
the students always work. I’ll also give the students photocopies. We will
also use the blackboard.
 Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: ICT will be present because
students will use their cell phones in order to look for new words in an online
dictionary.
 Seating arrangement: Students will be in their seats during the whole lesson.
They can change seats if needed in order to work in pairs.
 Assessment: what will be assessed and how: I’ll monitor all my students
through the lesson and I’ll check whether if they understand what I say or
not. I’ll try to make them repeat the different patterns and encourage them
to use the chunks meaningfully.
Warm up (10 minutes)
Purpose: To begin the lesson and create a comfortable atmosphere; to introduce
the students to the topic.
I’ll probably be inside the classroom and students will enter. I’ll greet them while
they settle into their sits. Some of them sit in pairs and other students sit on their
own. “Hello! Good morning everybody. How are you? Today we will work with an
important topic for society, so let’s explore some different concepts” at this point I will
write on the board the following words: work, generation, job, training, employee,
part- time, employment, replacing, knowledge, deal and paid. “Ok. Let’s go to page
36 on your books. You have to read only the title and look at the photo on the
page. You will also read and check the words you see on the board” Once the
students read and observe the picture we will discuss. We will revise and try to
guess the meaning of the words too. “Ok. Based on what we see and read. What do
you think the text is about?” Students will probably answer in Spanish but I’ll repeat
what they say in English. I’ll describe what we see in the photo and I’ll try to make
them understand what the words mean so they can relate it with the text.
Transition: “Well it’s time to read now so you can check if you’re right! You will only
read this part of the text, ok?” I will point the part that they have to read.
Presentation (20 minutes)
Purpose: To Expose the students to the language; to enhance students’
communicative skills and to develop or improve comprehensive skills.
This is the text the students have to work with. They will only read the part that is
on the left in order to have a clear comprehension of the whole text when they
finished it. I’ll ask the students to try to guess meaning of words in context, to find
cognates and look for words they don’t know in a dictionary (or google translator
that they are used to use) while they read. Once they read the part of the text we
will discuss about what they said
in the warm up stage.
Transition: “Great! We will work on the text now.”
Development (20 minutes)
Purpose: to develop communicative skills; to foster interaction and to check
students’ knowledge of new vocabulary.
Activity 1: (10 minutes) in the first activity students will have to match the words we
read in the warm up stage with their meanings. In order to do so I’ll give them a
photocopy with the words and the meanings.
1) Match the words in the box with their meanings
Work – generation – job – training – employee - part- time - employment
replacing – knowledge - deal - paid
- Physical exercise: practice. Knowledge or skill learned: ______________________
- Be employed: ________________________
- For which payment has been made: ________________________
- A Person who works: ____________________
- Agreement: _____________________
- Being in work: _____________________
- Age group: __________________
- Working for fewer than standard hours: _________________
- Substitute: ___________________
- Boss: ________________________
- Information, understanding: _______________________
Activity 2: (10 minutes) in the second activity students will have to answer the
following questions:
1) Why does training for work need to continue throughout people’s lives?
2) Why do you think work conditions today are different from the ones
followed by previous generations?
3) In which ways can people be trained for work?
4) What do opinion polls show about people’s jobs?
While the students do both activities I’ll be monitoring how they work and helping
them when they need it. I will say that they can work in pairs because they are used
to working in groups or in pairs.
Transition: “Well, it’s time to know your answers and opinions now!”
Closure (10 minutes)
Purpose: to raise students’ motivation.
To finish the lesson we will share and discuss about the questions they answered
before (mainly questions 1, 2 and 3) so they will have the possibility to give their
opinions about the topic.
