Transmission Mode in Computer Network:
Data Transmission mode defines the direction of the flow of information between two
communication devices. It is also called Data Communication or Directional Mode. It
specifies the direction of the flow of information from one place to another in a computer
network.
The data transmission modes can be characterized in the following three types based on the
direction of exchange of information:
1. Simplex
2. Half-Duplex
3. Full Duplex
Duplex:
A duplex communication system is a point-to-point system composed of two or more
connected parties or devices that can communicate with one another in both directions.
Duplex systems are employed in many communications networks, either to allow for
simultaneous communication in both directions between two connected parties or to provide
a reverse path for the monitoring and remote adjustment of equipment in the field. There are
two types of duplex communication systems: full-duplex (FDX) and half-duplex (HDX).
Over all Duplex is a system composed of two connected parties (or devices) that can
communicate with one another in both directions.
There are two kinds of duplex. Are bellow,
1. Full duplex
2. Half Duplex
Full Duplex:
In a full-duplex system, both parties can communicate with each other simultaneously. This
mode allows to transmit and receive data at the same time.
Half Duplex:
In a half-duplex system, each party can communicate with the other but not simultaneously.
The communication is one direction at a time. That means data transmission starts when
receiving data is over and receiving starts when transmission is over.
Simplex:
Simplex is a type of communication in which data can only be transmitted in one direction. It
is often used in contrast to duplex communication, in which data can flow bidirectionally
(back and forth) between two devices.
Hub:
A hub is a physical layer networking device which is used to connect multiple devices in a
network. They are generally used to connect computers in a LAN.
A hub has many ports in it. A computer which intends to be connected to the network is plugged
in to one of these ports.
Router:
A router is a device that connects different networks using the same transport protocol and
interconnects network layers.
Mac Address/NIC Card:
MAC Addresses are unique 48-bits hardware number of a computer, which is embedded into
network card (known as Network Interface Card) during the time of manufacturing. MAC
Address is also known as the Physical Address of a network device.
Local Area Network (LAN):
A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in one physical
location, such as a building, office, or home.
As the name suggests, LAN is a very small area (a college building, house or office) where a
number of computers are connected to each other via centralized device
called Switch or Hub which is connected to the Internet.
48 Bit

Organization Unique Identifier (OUI)
OUI number from IANA

Vendor Specification (VS)
Company’s personal batch number
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN):
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a computer network that is larger than a single
building local area network (LAN) but is located in a single geographic area that is smaller
than a wide area network (WAN). Generally, it is several LANs interconnected by
dedicated backbone connections. It may also refer to public use networking infrastructure in a
municipality or region.
World Wide Network (WAN):
A WAN is a network that uses various links—private lines, Multiprotocol Label Switching
(MPLS), virtual private networks (VPNs), wireless (cellular), the Internet—to connect
smaller metropolitan and campus networks in diverse locations into a single, distributed
network. The sites they connect could be a few miles apart or halfway around the globe. In an
enterprise, the purposes of a WAN could include connecting branch offices or even
individual remote workers with headquarters or the data center in order to share corporate
resources and communications.

There are two types of duplex communication systems: full-duplex (FDX) and half-duplex (HDX). Over all Duplex is a system composed of two connected parties (or devices) that can communicate with one another in both directions. There are two kinds of duplex. Are bellow, 1. Full duplex 2. Half Duplex Full Duplex: In a full-duplex system, both parties can communicate with each other simultaneously. This mode allows to transmit and receive data at the same time.
  • 4. Half Duplex: In a half-duplex system, each party can communicate with the other but not simultaneously. The communication is one direction at a time. That means data transmission starts when receiving data is over and receiving starts when transmission is over. Simplex: Simplex is a type of communication in which data can only be transmitted in one direction. It is often used in contrast to duplex communication, in which data can flow bidirectionally (back and forth) between two devices.
  • 5. Hub: A hub is a physical layer networking device which is used to connect multiple devices in a network. They are generally used to connect computers in a LAN. A hub has many ports in it. A computer which intends to be connected to the network is plugged in to one of these ports. Router: A router is a device that connects different networks using the same transport protocol and interconnects network layers.
  • 6. Mac Address/NIC Card: MAC Addresses are unique 48-bits hardware number of a computer, which is embedded into network card (known as Network Interface Card) during the time of manufacturing. MAC Address is also known as the Physical Address of a network device. Local Area Network (LAN): A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in one physical location, such as a building, office, or home. As the name suggests, LAN is a very small area (a college building, house or office) where a number of computers are connected to each other via centralized device called Switch or Hub which is connected to the Internet. 48 Bit 24 bits Organization Unique Identifier (OUI) OUI number from IANA 24 bits Vendor Specification (VS) Company’s personal batch number
  • 7. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a computer network that is larger than a single building local area network (LAN) but is located in a single geographic area that is smaller than a wide area network (WAN). Generally, it is several LANs interconnected by dedicated backbone connections. It may also refer to public use networking infrastructure in a municipality or region.
  • 8. World Wide Network (WAN): A WAN is a network that uses various links—private lines, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), virtual private networks (VPNs), wireless (cellular), the Internet—to connect smaller metropolitan and campus networks in diverse locations into a single, distributed network. The sites they connect could be a few miles apart or halfway around the globe. In an enterprise, the purposes of a WAN could include connecting branch offices or even individual remote workers with headquarters or the data center in order to share corporate resources and communications.
