We study the impact of ethnic and religious fractionalization on the U.S. municipal debt market, and find that issuers from
more ethnically and religiously fractionalized counties pay higher yields on their municipal debt. A two standard deviation

Statisticians of American Religious Bodies.2 In this context, fractionalization represents the probability that two randomly
selected members of a group will share a particular attribute. For example, in a society that is half white and half Hispanic, the
ethnic fractionalization measure would be 0.5; there would be a 50 percent chance that any two randomly selected people
would be of the same ethnicity. Fractionalization is the most common measure used to capture the extent to which a particular
society is divided across a particular characteristic.
We focus on ethnic and religious fractionalization because these characteristics are both salient and relatively fixed. Wealth,
income, and education are not directly observable, and like age they vary mechanically over the life cycle. Ethnic and religious
affiliations are generally more static. These measures capture the underlying concept that we focus on, namely the strength of
social ties across citizens and between citizens and officials in a local area.
We find evidence that municipal issuers in religiously fractionalized counties pay more to borrow than those in other counties.

Thanksgiving Reflection
It was around thanksgiving of 2014 and my family and I took a memorable trip to the redwood national forest, and throughout
this journey I learned some important lessons. We were planning the trip up along the coast of California and Oregon to
experience the Redwood National State Park. I was kind of annoyed we were driving the whole entire time together in the
truck so my attitude wasn t the best on the start of the trip, my lesson learned is to make the best out of the situation because
journeys are worth remembering. We begin our journey leaving our house later in the day because my dad always double
checks the alarm is on and our house is secure, In times of stress I go to my mom who is always there to support me. We are
driving and the closer we get, the more tired we become. We can see that the trees have been getting bigger and the smell
smells more like a wet garden. When we reached the sign that said Welcome to the Redwood National Forest, the trees were
massive! The trees were around 300 feet tall, for comparison the trees in front of the KAOL High School are about 15 feet tall.
Once we entered the forest we felt like we were ants.

Although there is much controversy surrounding Mortenson and the CAI, in the novel, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson
and David Oliver Relin, Mortenson is portrayed as hero. In 1993 he had attempted to climb K2 and failed, which led him into
an impoverished village of Pakistan named Korphe. In Korphe, he had promised to build a school in return of their kindness

During development, the temporal lobe is most responsible for responding to auditory (hearing) information, however for
those who cannot hear, this section was used for a different sense (Mareschal et al, 2004). This shows that the temporal lobe in
the brain, although genetically made to hear, had used the child s sensory experience to become prominently involved with
visual processing, or in other words, adapted to the environment that the child was in. If the brain was already made for

Study 1 Sample As part of a multi institutional study funded by the American Legacy Foundation (ALF), 743 undergraduates
self identifying as Mexican American were recruited from college campuses in California, Florida, New York, and Texas. The
primary aim of the overall study was to compare smoking related behaviors and attitudes across Hispanic subgroups (see
American Legacy Foundation, 2014; Hale, Perrotte, Baumann, Garza, in press). Participants completed an online survey
requiring up to fifty minutes to complete. Questions included items pertaining to tobacco, alcohol, and drug usage, as well as
numerous trait and attitudinal measures. For Study 1, the sample was composed of bicultural Mexican American college
students, operationalized as those who scored 2.5 or higher on both domains of the BAS (Marín Gamba, 1996). This resulted
in a sample of 335 individuals, which was further reduced to 309 when cases with missing data and outliers were removed.
