Moving To America Essay
I walked around unsteadily all day like a lost baby, far away from its pack. Surrounded by unfamiliar
territory and uncomfortable weather, I tried to search for any signs of similarities with my previous
country. I roamed around from place to place and moved along with the day, wanting to just get away
and go back home. This was my first day in the United States of America.
A few months before all of this I was pleased with my calm life in a local city of Taiwan. I settled
there at the age of two with my family, and things were going well so far. Because I lived there for ten
years, the longest time that I ever spent living in one place, I had made really good friends and was not
looking forward to any significant changes although my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first, my reaction was somewhat neutral, not even panic or shivering. I didn?t know how to feel. I
didn?t immediately realize the effects that this major change would have on me. I mean that I cannot
believe right away, this happens too fast. I didn?t know how it would feel to live in a completely
different country and new house. I didn?t instantly acknowledge the effect that leaving my friends
would have on me. I didn?t anticipate the constant emotional frustration of being forced to leave my
closest friends. I didn?t know how it would feel to be the new kid in school. I did not even know how
to speak and write English at that time. I cannot image that I have to restart everything in my life. And
I was too scared to think about the difficulty to fit with all the new things around.
After some time, these facts began to sink in. I would no longer wake up and walk into the same
bathroom, walk down the same stairs, or eat in the same kitchen. I would no longer take the same
walking route to school along with my friends. I would no longer have the same lasting neighborhood
friends to socialize with. I would no longer take the same classes in school, talk to the same teachers,
or even take notes the same way. However, I did not realize some of the other, not as despondent,
impacts that changing environments would have until being ?new? for a few

Virtue Ethics And Aristotle s Virtue Ethics
Virtue ethics revolves around an individual s character traits, which often times crosses over to one s
career, or in this case engineering. According to Aristotle, if a person has obtained certain virtues, it
will be reflected in their behavior. Engineers have a responsibility to protect the public from harm, as
well as promote the public s wellbeing. Therefore, an engineer must contain several vital character
traits, or virtues, in order to perform their job accordingly. In this paper, virtue ethics will be further
evaluated as well as applied to the engineering discipline. In order to understand Aristotle s virtue
ethics, the words eudaimonia and arête must be acknowledged. Eudaimonia is defined as happiness or
flourishing. This state of eudaimonia is achieved by striving for goals in life, which in turn results in
the individual s success and happiness. The individual is always setting new goals in order to become
the best person they can be. Arête, on the other hand, is defined as a virtue, or what makes something
outstanding. According to Aristotle, virtues are a mean between deficiency and excess. This means
that an individual has acquired a virtue when presented with a situation, the individual preforms ...

According to Aristotle, the four cardinal virtues are prudence, temperance, courage and justice. Each
of these character traits are essential for an individual to become virtuous, in both their personal and
professional life. These traits are formed through practice, and developed throughout an individual s
life experiences. Prudence is defined as having practical judgment, or being rational. Temperance is
containing self control, or control over an individual s behavior. Courage can be thought of as the
ability to face one s fears, and act bravely in a situation. Lastly, justice is defined as an individual

Social Class Vs Middle Class
It has been a well known fact for several decades now, that the middle/working class is the backbone
of the United States. This economic class of Americans are what hold the country stable through their
hard work and purchasing power. However, lately there has been a few jabs thrown at the middle
class, such as the 2007 2008 recession, problems with minimum wage and its efficacy to create a
comfortable life, and political matchups between candidates that reflect the middle class in different
ways. I believe that the middle class has had to make decisions that will benefit them financially but
hurt their desires such as, having a fewer amount of kids. To begin, money is what keeps the United
States moving day in and day out. People wake up to get money, sleep shorter hours to make more
money, and place a gate around their wants to be able to keep in as much money as possible. One want
that I believe is being affected by this is the desire to have children. Children are precious blessings
from God to us and we have a hand in creating them. However, children are expensive and the strain
that they can put on parents financially is innumerable. I believe that couples are opting to have
children depending on their financial situation more and more as of lately. ... Show more content on

The hesitation that couples have and the higher use of contraceptives has also impacted this
demographic transition. According to, Population Education The rate of decline is dependent on
economic and social factors at play the quicker gains are made in areas such as education and gender
equality, the faster birth rates decline (Grover, 2014). It is easily noticeable that as couples choose to
allow money to dictate the decisions they make, in particularly having a kid, the less births will

The Supreme Court And The Sexual Revolution

York Times: 18 March 1986. Bowers v. Hardwick 478 U.S. 186 (1986).
Ideas about sex, gender and homosexuality have been changing rapidly over the past several decades
in the United States. There are several obvious reasons for this. The primary one is legal: various legal
decisions by the United States Supreme Court have altered existing law on the subject of sex and
homosexuality, and substantially affected matters of gender as expressed in law. But there has also
been a social shift driven by medicine, largely based on response to the AIDS epidemic at its height in
the 1980s and 1990s, but also in terms of other medical matters such as contraception and abortion.
To a certain degree, seeing how these matters have progressed since the 1960s gives a good vantage to
predicting where they will go in the future. In conclusion, I will look at the future of change on these
matters, by examining what seems to be the avant garde regarding matters of sex and gender, the
phenomenon of transsexualism. I hope an examination of transsexualism will point out some of the
contradictions that still continue to exist in American ideas about matters of sex. We are accustomed to
referring to a sexual revolution in the 1960s, but the actual consequences of that social shift were
necessarily reflected in the law. To a

Jeanette Winterson s Story Of A Mother Story
In Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal, Jeanette Winterson reflects on why she had to
become a writer. Winterson s, alternative to not writing her life story would be losing herself in the
narrow mesh of her adoptive mother s story (698): Winterson experiences a power struggle between
her adoptive mother s narrative and her needs to preserve her personal story. Winterson s mother story
is one of severe unhappiness and resentment, or an unlived life as Winterson describes it (695).
Through her adoption, Winterson was thrust into a dysfunctional family and suffered extensive abuse
at the hands of her angry mother. Winterson alludes the strength she has been forced to gain in order to
survive. In a chaotic and abusive household, she was forced to become a bare knuckle fighter to
endure the pandemonium (696). As Winterson says about her family dynamic, the one who wins is the
one who hits the hardest (696). Winterson s life experiences portray a struggle to exist as she suggests,
she has been fighting alone her whole life without anything to help her or back her up. Often being
forced to fend for herself, thus revealing her need to preserve her story and prevent it from drowning
in the tragic narrative of her mother. While Winterson s descriptive literary devices paint a picture of
the pain and suffering she endured as an adopted child, the reader may struggle while interpreting the
true source of her childhood pain. When reading, two potential causes for

Outline For The Catcher In The Rye
At the beginning of the story, Holden is introduced as an apathetic person. He has failed four out of
five of his classes and has received a notice that he is being expelled at Pencey Prep school in
Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden was scheduled to return home on a Wednesday, so he decided to go
and visit Mr. Spencer, his history teacher, to say his goodbye. Mr. Spencer advises Holden to find
direction in his life, which got Holden annoyed and dismissed everything Mr.Spencer has said. Holden
returns to his dormitory, where he finds his neighbor, Robert Ackley and Ward Stradlater, a arrogant
and self centered slob. Stradlater then asks Holden to write an English paper for him, while he
prepares for his date with Jane Gallagher, a girl whom Holden has a crush on and used to date. When
Stradlater returns, Holden asks Stradlater if he tried any sexual act with Jane. Stradlater tease Holden
by indicating that he might have had sex with her, which result Holden becoming angry and punching
Stradlater. That night Holden decide to leave Pencey and return to New York, where he would stay in
a hotel instead of going home. When Holden arrives at the Edmont Hotel, Holden sees a transvestite

Theme Of Love In Attars Conference Of The Birds And...
Love is a central theme in both Attars Conference of the Birds and Dante s The Inferno. Whilst both
explore this theme in varying ways and take extremely contrasting routes, their final destination to
faith is achieved. The authors explore the divine through love and investigate the ways in which
passion and devotion are intertwined. In both texts, as the characters fall deeper into love, they fall
deeper into their faith. A spiritual journey led by passion is seen to be a constructive way to attain one
s closeness to God. Attars description of a spiritual journey towards God is at times opposing to the
path often associated with a religious experience, yet perfectly mimics his Suffi background. In
Suffism a belief widely held is that complete submission to love ends in the soul becoming one with G
d and this is shown by Sheikh Sam ans all consuming love for the Christian woman, which is not a
path away from God but a path towards him. Dante s the Inferno is based off a completely contrasting
belief system and culture, yet love seems to be the only guidance on his path through all and towards
faith. Love is the very essence of the Conference of the birds, from Sufism s core belief that love is the
path towards God, to the story posed in the text of Sheik Sam ans journey of love towards
enlightenment. Love was the motivator for all of Sam ans actions on his journey away from Islam and
towards the way . Within the first introductory lines of the poem, love is mentioned multiple times. It
starts with Love thrives on inextinguishable pain and finishes with a convulsion of each heart yet in
Dante s The Inferno, this is not as blatant. The text is surrounded by fury and anger, and many argue
the existence of the text is a ploy to frighten and embitter people into commitment towards
Christianity. We move through every sphere of hell, each entailing a more intense punishment, further
embedding our faith to god out of the existence of fear. The notion of a fear of hell to motivate faith
seems to be a theme for the text and a way to motivate the masses into believing in a Christian God.
This seems to deter away from Attars optimistic tone and the acceptance he offers to various faiths and
paths towards finding

Lord Chesterfield Character Analysis
In Lord Chesterfield s letter to his son, he attempts to shape him into a respectable man worthy of
inheriting the family wealth in ways that can still be recognized in parenting today. In modern times,
parents put a high value on grades and schooling; Chesterfield chides his son to take more care in his
accumulation of knowledge. Respect is also key, parents still demand the same respect from their
children as Chesterfield expects from his son. Another thing that parents will often say is to learn from
their mistakes which is something Chesterfield places high value on. The things Chesterfield tries to
pass on in this letter to his son say a lot about his personal values, namely, the value he places on
respect, education, and decision making. Throughout his letter, Lord Chesterfield makes small, passive
aggressive remarks that hint underhandedly at the repercussions should his son choose not to respect
what he is saying. He threatens that his young son can not have a shilling in the world but from [him]
(27 28). Here, Chesterfield warns that he will not be allowed even a little bit of the family s fortune
unless he gives it to him. Basically, Chesterfield is exposing the complete dependency his son has on
him due to their aristocratic status. This also alludes to respect because if his son does not respect him,
he will quiet literally have nothing. Additionally, Chesterfield is convinced [his son] will act right (32)
not because he threatened him with what

Introversion In The Mid-17th Century
In the seventeen years that I ve been alive, I have relished spending my days in a very particular
manner. Alone. And that s not to say that spending time with my closest friends has never brought me
pleasure; our late nights at wrestling competitions, playing video games, just shooting the breeze are
some of my most enjoyable memories. It s just that there s something soothing about solitary reading,
quiet introspection, and exercising alone toward which I gravitate. According to my mom it s because
she didn t arrange enough playdates for me when I was a little kid. It may just be that I was born
predestined to have an inclination towards solitude, like some puritanical hermit. But regardless of the
reasons for my social preferences, what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Be it rappers, outspoken politicians, flamboyant actors, or any number of outgoing personas,
Americans admire individuals for their attention commanding qualities. To quote Susan Cain, a former

And in a competitive culture that reveres alpha dogs, one downmanship is probably the most damning
trait of all. THAT is why I find it so important to separate the concept of introversion from shyness: To
dispel any notion of weakness, to deny any perception of social disadvantage, and to debunk the idea
that introverts are in any way incapable of being functional members of society. After all, I m a living
contradiction to that

The Importance Of The Re-Organization Of Society
The Fabians believed strongly in the importance of the re organization of Society by creating local
governments and working for the extinction of private property. They desired municipalization of
Land and local government according to the Fabian Parliamentary League s Tract, The True Radical
Programme (1887, p. 7). By giving power to local governments, the Society felt national wealth could
be better circulated and citizens could be better represented. This radically modern notion is expressed
in this strongly worded declaration, So long as the government is not government by the people, of the
people, for the people, it can matter little to the people whether it s a seat at the capital or at the local
centres (Fabian Parliamentary League, 1887, p. 4). As with many Socialist platforms, land and private
property were constant issues. Similar to their radical neighbours the SDF, the Fabians believed in the
extinction of private property meaning the removal of property from individual ownership and placing
it back into the hands of the community (Shaw, 1899, p. 30). Another major objective of the
movement was creating a more equal society where men and women were equal, and all had the right
to vote ( The Guardian , 2001). Suffrage for ALL was incredibly important for the Fabians because
they saw women and the poor to be equally affected by governmental laws (Fabian Parliamentary
League, 1887, p. 5). The Fabian Parliamentary League continued its passionate discourse on

Against The War
I began exercising my rights as an American citizen in earnest when I was 12 years old. During
lunchtime at school, a few kids in my class placed thumbtacks on my teacher s chair (an old trick).
She was understandably very upset when she sat on them. Not having DNA and fingerprint testing at
her disposal, Ms. Hana issued the ultimatum that unless those who had committed the act came
forward, she would be forced to punish the whole class. We had until the end of the day to produce the
guilty persons. The next day Ms. Hana came in and said that we would all be facing detention that day

I am silent. My heart is too heavy to say anything. The gravity that pulls me down to the ground with

It is hard to keep a hungry child quiet. It is hard to silence the cries of a mother who has buried yet

The Impacts of the War on Drugs
The War On Drugs has lasted many years, including before it was officially called War On Drugs. The
prohibition of drugs first got its start in the late 1800 s with anti opium laws, focusing on chinese
immigrants. This was common with the first anti drug laws. It entirely about scientific based facts on
what the effects or risks of the drugs, rather who was associated with the use of the specific drugs. For
example, the anti cocaine laws in the early 1900 s were directed at black men, and the anti marijuana

Today, black and latino communities are susceptible to being profiled as heavy drug using

the symbols of drugs. In June of 1971, President nixon officially declared the War on Drugs causing
an increase of federal drug control agencies throughout the nation and created no knock warrants.
Along with the war on drugs he placed marijuana into the most restrictive category of drugs, called
Schedule One. The committee that was appointed to putting marijuana there suggested to
decriminalize the possession of marijuana for personal use, but Nixon ignored and rejected their

Coming Buy, Come Buy
Many feel that pleasure is a way for people to express their feelings in a way that is animalistic or
savage. Krista Lysack, author of Come Buy, Come Buy, has a different interpretation as to what
pleasure is. She views pleasure as simply that which exceeds the norms of usefulness, not as a greedy
grab for something one desires. Pleasure is not something that really needs to be justified or explained
because it possesses value within itself. Explaining why you get pleasure from specific objects or
tasks is something that seems very difficult to do, other than saying that you do it because you like it.
Lysack later goes on to theorize that shopping becomes less and less about what is useful, and more
about what allows us to be distracted and entertained. Pleasure to her is a state of being that is
anything but stagnant and instead moves around to a variety of different areas. People s interests are
bound to change over a lifetime as few people at age twenty are likely to get the same joy from tasks
they performed when they were five.
Acting on one s pleasures would have previously been seen as excessive because it was considered
extreme to move away from what the norm was. The Victorian women were one of the first to break
away and form their pleasures solely on what they felt was fun. No one can really give an exact reason
for why we do things that are pleasurable because pleasure is different for everyone. Lysack s final
and most meaningful take on pleasure is that it

The Single Payer Reimbursement System
What is a Single Payer Reimbursement System?
Single payer reimbursement is a health care financing system that includes both the collection of
money for health care and reimbursement of providers for health care costs. In such a system, the
government or a quasi public agency is the entity that bears full responsibility of collecting funds and
reimbursing appropriate parties, but the provision of care remains in private hands. Through taxpayer
funds, the government collects money from individuals and businesses, and then reimburses providers
who delivered health care services to those individuals enrolled in the public health insurance
program. (http://www.pnhp.org/facts/what is single payer).
Current Healthcare Financing System in the United States
The United States currently employs a multipayer system. The payers in this system include the
government and private insurance companies., thus the collection of money for health care is a joint
responsibility of both parties. Private insurance companies collect premiums and other payments from
enrolled individuals and businesses. The government collects taxes from individuals and businesses.
Regarding reimbursement, the private insurance industry reimburses providers for health care services
delivered to privately insured individuals, while the government reimburses providers for health care
services delivered to publicly insured individuals (e.g. people enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, S
CHIP, or the VA).

The problems arise when certain factors, such as muscle mass and fat deposition, are not taken into
consideration. Because muscle is much denser than fat and takes up less space, two individuals of the
same height and weight could have the same BMI, even though one may have a significantly higher

Researchers now know that if most of your fat is in the tummy area, your health risks are greater than

hormones that affect cell growth, including the growth of cancer cells.
Consequently, waist to hip ratio (a measurement of waist size divided by hip size) is a more reliable

Christopher s Behavior
One of Chris s behavior is a good dad. He is a good dad because he did not have a dad when he was
growing up, he did not want his son to go through the same thing. He also is a good dad, because he
wouldn t let Linda take Christopher to New York with her, he wouldn t let her take him because he
thought that Christopher would forget about him. When he didn t have money and had to support his
son, he lightens the mood by saying that the bone density scanner was a time machine and if
Christopher would press a button something cool would happen. So Christopher pressed it when they

Netherland Political Analysis
The History and Politics of the Netherlands
A kingdom by the sea that is characterised by the roaring lion and the falling petals of a tulip bulb. A
place once revolved around the trade of agricultural products such as fish and meat production that has
become an industrial empire among its surrounding sister nations. Throughout time the Kingdom of
the Netherlands has been somewhat of an isolationist country but nonetheless has managed to keep a
prominent place with its own rich history, bustling economy and extensive political influences.
With a history as rich as its signature dutch chocolate The Netherlands has been through many of its

The stimulus programs and bank bailouts, however, resulted in a government budget deficit of 5.3% of
GDP in 2010 that contrasted sharply with a surplus of 0.7% in 2008. The government of Prime
Minister Mark Rutte has since implemented significant austerity measures to improve public finances
and has instituted broad structural reforms in key policy areas, including the labor market, the housing
sector, the energy market, and the pension system.
Thus displaying to the world a country of prominence, wealth, business and relative economic security
despite everything else that may be going on around it. Commonly today the integration of religion
into politics is seen as a primitive form of rule. This concept of a separation of church and state being
in conflict with early Dutch ideal. In fact there was such a deep connection between these two forms
of human affiliation that certain laws were made that prohibited public worship of non majority

religious organization. In contrast to past instances the Netherlandish government now

The Effects Of Healthy Hearing On The Middle Ear And Inner...
Healthy hearing relies on multiple events to take place. For proper hearing all of the moving elements
have to do their parts. If not it can cause hearing loss and other substantial symptoms. One disorder
that shows how one malformation can cause overall hearing deficits is Otosclerosis. Otosclerosis is a
disorder in which there is a malfunction during the fusion of bones in the middle ear and inner ear,
which in turn causes the ossicles or surrounding bones not to vibrate in a manner that is conducive for
proper hearing. The Etiology is unclear but scientist does have speculations of the possible onsets of
Otosclerosis. Scientist have made great strides in treatments and therapy for those who have this
disorder.
Otosclerosis is an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The etiology of Otosclerosis of most patients is usually a genetic mutation or inherited from a parent.
Otosclerosis is known to be a in an autosomal dominant pattern with variable penetrance. Which
means that a child has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene if one parent is a carrier. Scientists have
found that it can be multiple genes on the chromosomes that are affected that cause Otosclerosis.
Showing that the disease does not just occur on one specific gene. Scientist where able to find in one
case that a family had a mutation in a gene for collagen and antibodies against collagen, suggesting an
autoimmune mechanism (Niedermeyer Arnold 2002). Although, scientist found this information they
cannot automatically say that this is the sole cause for Otosclerosis, because they have also found that
in some cases of this diseases that it can be onset by an infection of the measles virus. A recent
hypothesis suggests that otosclerosis requires a combination of a specific gene with exposure to a
specific virus (for example measles) for it to be expressed and for hearing loss to occur (McGuirt et al,
1998). Scientists continue to work on this hypothesis because they have reason to believe that the
measles virus predisposes patients to Otosclerosis. They have found viral material in the nucleic acid
of the otosclerotic stapes footplates (Karosi et al 2008) and increased levels of antibodies to

Fairytales are not what they seem. Essay
INTRO
Sex. Pure unadulterated sex. When we think of sex, it is not usually in the context of a fairytale.
Fairytales are for children, virgin ears. Over the years, fairytales have been cleaned up for young ears
we have become accustomed to the bland Disney versions of tales. How many of us can recount a
version separate from the animated classics of our childhood? It is truly hard to believe that sometimes
there are much more racy versions of these same tales.
Today, I d like to share one such variation of Little Red Riding Hood called In the Company of
Wolves, written by Angela Carter. I will recount ancient folklore of werewolves, introduce the

She has been loved too much to know how to be scared.
It was the middle of winter, and the silence of the woods seemed to close down upon our heroine like
a pair of jaws. Suddenly she heard a distant howl of a wolf, and she sprang to the handle of a well
concealed knife, but nobody was there. Suddenly, a clamor among the bushed produced a fully clothed
and very handsome young man holding a very large rifle. They walked along the worn path for some
time together laughing like old friends. It was only a mere half mile to go till the warmth and safety of
her grandmother s house when the dashing young stranger proposed a bet. He insisted that with the
help of a compass, he would surely make it to the grandmother s house before she would on the path.
A game was made of it, and if he won, he was to have a kiss. At the mention of the kiss, Little Red
lowered her eyes and blushed, commonplace of rustic seduction. Although it was getting dark, she
wanted to dawdle on her way so that the handsome gentleman would win his wager. She forgot to be
afraid of the beasts.
TR*: It was this wager that was to signal the end of innocence for our young heroine.
The handsome young man arrived at grandmother s house first with a trace of blood on his chin. He
knocked on the door with his hairy knuckles and announced himself in high soprano as her
granddaughter. After entering he removed his disguise, and granny could see his matted hair streaming
down his white shirt, lice moving within it.

Lastly, the bitter taste buds are located in the far back of the tongue. There are some taste buds on the
palate that pick up different tastes (Smith, David). Smell, on the other hand, is the sense that comes
from odor molecules attaching to the olfactory nerve. Air carries the odor into the nose. Then odor
contacts the olfactory nerves at the top of the nasal passages. The the olfactory nerves send a signal to
the olfactory bulb of the brain, and the nerve sends a signal to the front of the brain. The forebrain
translates the signals of the odor into a specific smell (Swindle, Mark). Smell and taste are so
interrelated that many scientists think that taste is about 80% of aroma and 20% actual taste
(American Academy of Otolaryngology). It changes as people age, the sense of smell seems to be
better in adults than in kids. Usually at age 60 or over, adults may start to lose their sense of smell.
Scientists have proven that women have a better sense of smell than men. People who have head
injuries often lose their sense of smell and lose weight because the taste of the food they eat has been
impaired through the injury. Also, people with sinus problems or upper respiratory problems lose
weight because of a decreased sense of smell and appetite (American Academy of Otolaryngology). In
previous studies, Frank and Byram s article suggest that taste and smell interactions are dependent on
taste and odor. In their experiments, they gave subjects strawberry

The Secret To Raising Smart Kids Summary
The Secret to Raising Smart Kids: Analytic Summary Ms. Carol S. Dweck believes that children with
a big ego, or a fixed mind set, will not excel in school as well as someone who has a smaller ego, or a
growth mind set. According to Ms. Dweck on lines 16 20, The result plays out in children link
Jonathan, who coast through the early grades under the dangerous notion that no effort academic
achievement defines them as smart or gifted. Such children hold an implicit belief that intelligence is
innate and fixed, making striving to learn seem far less important than being (or looking) smart. As
previously stated in the text, Jonathan s grades plummeted after he started to work at higher levels of
education. The author believes that over praising parents are to blame. A child who has been praised in
the younger years of his or her schooling is more likely to have a fixed mind set. As said in lines 45
46, Attributing poor performance to a lack of ability depresses motivation more than does the belief
that lack of effort is to blame. With this fixed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated in lines 77 79, The helpless ones believe that intelligence is a mixed trait: you only have a
certain amount, and that s that. Ms. Dweck calls this a fixed mind set. She states that mistakes these
kids with fixed mind sets make, crack and diminish their self confidence because they blame their
errors on lack of ability. The master oriented kids think intelligence is something you work and strive
for through hard work. They want to learn above all else. Ms. Dweck states in lines 86 87, After all, if
you believe you can expand your intellectual skills, you want to do just that. For these mater oriented
kids, challenges are energizing instead of being intimidating. Master oriented students, or students
with a growth mind set, are destined to surpass their counterpart (hopeless mind set students) when it

The History Of The Globe Theatre
Luke Hallfrisch
Prof. Rebecca Thornberry
Intro to theater
October 28, 2016
The History of the Globe Theatre Today we know of The Globe Theatre on because of the famous
playwright and director known as William Shakespeare. The events which took place in The Globe s
past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the history of theater
and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance it held at its time,
and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future.
In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen, to
lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be
allowed to build his theatre known as The Theatre . It was located north of the London Wall
(Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there were
many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those involved
in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert
Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme action to protect
their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The landowner had hoped he
would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In December of 1598 while Giles
Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers,

First Transit Job Analysis
I thought that I had found the job of my dreams, and possibly my career. A job where everything was
perfect and I progressed quickly, but an unexpected turn of events quickly proved me wrong. I went
from having an awesome office job to being unemployed; however, having to find a new start proved
to be more beneficial than I expected. My first job at First Transit was everything I wanted and more.
For starters, it was located in my home town of Church Point, and the pay was above average for the
area. The ideal nine to five schedule was also a plus. As a customer service representative I was doing
what I loved, helping people. I quickly moved up to a supervisor position which enabled me to travel.
I visited the different regions of Louisiana with covered expenses that included: hotel, food, and
travel. To my surprise an unexpected turn of events was about to take place. First Transit, the job of
my dreams, abruptly came to an end. I did not know that the company I worked for was actually
contracted through The Department of Health and Hospitals. At the time of renewal First Transit lost
their bid for a new contract, as a result, my coworkers and I were left unemployed. I was unemployed
for about six months before I found work, and that was a very depressing time for me. I felt as though

Jarome The Legless Man Arthur Thurston Summary
On September 8, 1863, a stranger whose legs had been amputated above the knee was found on the
beach of Sandy Cove, on the coast of the Bay of Fundy. Taken in by the local Acadians, he spent the
rest of his life in almost total silence. People named him Jerome because in the midst of his grunting
he is said to have uttered this name. The families that took him in received an allocation from the
Nova Scotia government to provide for his needs. People came from everywhere to see the mystery
man, who was put on show. By the time he died in April 1912, the legend of Jerome had only begun.

Arthur Thurston suggests the most seemingly plausible theory which utilizes opinion of individuals in
Chipman who came to the consensus that he had left a ship, foreign or otherwise, at Chatham, and was
trying to make his way to Saint John when a spell of sub zero weather overtook him. The route he was
following had been a well traveled passage from Nova Scotia to New France in ages past. The story
begins upon the discovery of a foreigner submerged in the frozen waters of the Gaspereaux River, by
an Individual by the name of Peter Garvey. This particular account is suggested by Amphibia s article
More About Legless Jarome published by the St. John Daily Telegraph. Further evidence is provided
by an Archival Government document which indicates and reports of an incident involving a Frozen
Italian. Amphibians article More About Jerome the Legless, suggests that soon following the
discovery of Jerome it became apparent that gangrene had made its appearance, as a result, the half
frozen Italians legs would need to be amputated in order to save his life. The resulting procedure
according to newspaper as well as Government records of medical bills was performed by doctor

Italian Neorealism
Italian Neo realism Thesis
What?
It sought to deal realistically with the events leading up to the war and with their resulting social
problems. Rooted in the 1920s, it was similar to the verismo ( realism ) movement, from which it
originated, but differed in that its upsurge resulted from the intense feelings inspired by fascist
repression, the Resistance, and the war.
Italian aesthetic movement that flourished especially after World War II.
Neorealism in film embraced a documentary like objectivity; actors were often amatuers, and the
action centred on commonplace situations. Often crudely and hastily made, Neorealist productions
stood in stark contrast to traditional escapist feature films.
It must be said that neorealist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A year later Paisà (Italy 1946) took the process of nation building further by not only attempting to
unite different regional communities together in its six different episodes but also explicitly bringing
spaces together in the map of the Italian peninsula which gradually becomes uniformly white as the
forces of liberation are shown moving upwards along the Italian boot. It s significant, suggests Restivo
in an aside, that Rossellini doesn t end up showing the Italian boot completely whitened by the
movement of liberation but rather allows a stain to remain in the northeastern sector, approximately at
the place of Salò (Italy/France, 1975).
Nevertheless, as is well known, Neorealism itself failed and, in a sense, was destined to fail. On the
one hand its commitment to an aesthetics of reality was self defeating since Italy s millenarian
regionalism worked against the construction of anything but the most fictionalised national unity. On
the other hand the radical political openness that had existed briefly after the war which had allowed
Neorealism to project an Italy fashioned along the lines of Partisan dreams, was greatly reduced by the
1948 elections and reduced further as the Christian Democrat party consolidated its power in the early
1950s. Neorealism thus disappeared and left the representation of the fragmented real Italy, in

How Is Cleopatra Powerful
Cleopatra was born on 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt. Cleopatra was the daughter of Ptolemy XII, also
known as Auletes, and Cleopatra V Tryphaena, who was believed to be her father s sister. She was
believed to have three sisters, two older and one younger, and two younger brothers. Many Romans
did not think Cleopatra could be a ruler. During that time, females weren t considered as powerful and
important as men. Throughout her life, Cleopatra was able to prove how powerful she was, and what
she was able to accomplish.
To begin with, Cleopatra s family ruled Egypt for about 100 years even before Cleopatra was born.
Cleopatra spoke six different languages including; Arabic, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Greek, Hebrew, and
Latin. Cleopatra s ability to speak several different languages was beneficial throughout her life;
helping her communicate with other people to get what she wants. For instance, Cleopatra could
communicate with Julius Caesar due to her knowledge of Greek. In 51 BC, when Cleopatra s father
died, the Egyptian throne was passed to Cleopatra and her brother. However, around 49 BC, Ptolemy s
advisers acted against Cleopatra forcing her to flee Egypt for Syria. Thus, a year passed and Cleopatra
returned to face her brother. Her main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ruler of Egypt. On March 15, 44 BC, Caesar was assassinated by the Ides causing Cleopatra to go

chance to strengthen her position as the queen of Egypt and restore the glory of the Ptolemies who

  • 2. Moving To America Essay I walked around unsteadily all day like a lost baby, far away from its pack. Surrounded by unfamiliar territory and uncomfortable weather, I tried to search for any signs of similarities with my previous country. I roamed around from place to place and moved along with the day, wanting to just get away and go back home. This was my first day in the United States of America. A few months before all of this I was pleased with my calm life in a local city of Taiwan. I settled there at the age of two with my family, and things were going well so far. Because I lived there for ten years, the longest time that I ever spent living in one place, I had made really good friends and was not looking forward to any significant changes although my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first, my reaction was somewhat neutral, not even panic or shivering. I didn?t know how to feel. I didn?t immediately realize the effects that this major change would have on me. I mean that I cannot believe right away, this happens too fast. I didn?t know how it would feel to live in a completely different country and new house. I didn?t instantly acknowledge the effect that leaving my friends would have on me. I didn?t anticipate the constant emotional frustration of being forced to leave my closest friends. I didn?t know how it would feel to be the new kid in school. I did not even know how to speak and write English at that time. I cannot image that I have to restart everything in my life. And I was too scared to think about the difficulty to fit with all the new things around. After some time, these facts began to sink in. I would no longer wake up and walk into the same bathroom, walk down the same stairs, or eat in the same kitchen. I would no longer take the same walking route to school along with my friends. I would no longer have the same lasting neighborhood friends to socialize with. I would no longer take the same classes in school, talk to the same teachers, or even take notes the same way. However, I did not realize some of the other, not as despondent, impacts that changing environments would have until being ?new? for a few ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Virtue Ethics And Aristotle s Virtue Ethics Virtue ethics revolves around an individual s character traits, which often times crosses over to one s career, or in this case engineering. According to Aristotle, if a person has obtained certain virtues, it will be reflected in their behavior. Engineers have a responsibility to protect the public from harm, as well as promote the public s wellbeing. Therefore, an engineer must contain several vital character traits, or virtues, in order to perform their job accordingly. In this paper, virtue ethics will be further evaluated as well as applied to the engineering discipline. In order to understand Aristotle s virtue ethics, the words eudaimonia and arête must be acknowledged. Eudaimonia is defined as happiness or flourishing. This state of eudaimonia is achieved by striving for goals in life, which in turn results in the individual s success and happiness. The individual is always setting new goals in order to become the best person they can be. Arête, on the other hand, is defined as a virtue, or what makes something outstanding. According to Aristotle, virtues are a mean between deficiency and excess. This means that an individual has acquired a virtue when presented with a situation, the individual preforms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Aristotle, the four cardinal virtues are prudence, temperance, courage and justice. Each of these character traits are essential for an individual to become virtuous, in both their personal and professional life. These traits are formed through practice, and developed throughout an individual s life experiences. Prudence is defined as having practical judgment, or being rational. Temperance is containing self control, or control over an individual s behavior. Courage can be thought of as the ability to face one s fears, and act bravely in a situation. Lastly, justice is defined as an individual behaving in a fair ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Social Class Vs Middle Class It has been a well known fact for several decades now, that the middle/working class is the backbone of the United States. This economic class of Americans are what hold the country stable through their hard work and purchasing power. However, lately there has been a few jabs thrown at the middle class, such as the 2007 2008 recession, problems with minimum wage and its efficacy to create a comfortable life, and political matchups between candidates that reflect the middle class in different ways. I believe that the middle class has had to make decisions that will benefit them financially but hurt their desires such as, having a fewer amount of kids. To begin, money is what keeps the United States moving day in and day out. People wake up to get money, sleep shorter hours to make more money, and place a gate around their wants to be able to keep in as much money as possible. One want that I believe is being affected by this is the desire to have children. Children are precious blessings from God to us and we have a hand in creating them. However, children are expensive and the strain that they can put on parents financially is innumerable. I believe that couples are opting to have children depending on their financial situation more and more as of lately. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The hesitation that couples have and the higher use of contraceptives has also impacted this demographic transition. According to, Population Education The rate of decline is dependent on economic and social factors at play the quicker gains are made in areas such as education and gender equality, the faster birth rates decline (Grover, 2014). It is easily noticeable that as couples choose to allow money to dictate the decisions they make, in particularly having a kid, the less births will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Supreme Court And The Sexual Revolution Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479 (1965). Ibid. Buckley, Jr., William F. Crucial Steps in Combating the Aids Epidemic; Identify All the Carriers. New York Times: 18 March 1986. Bowers v. Hardwick 478 U.S. 186 (1986). Ideas about sex, gender and homosexuality have been changing rapidly over the past several decades in the United States. There are several obvious reasons for this. The primary one is legal: various legal decisions by the United States Supreme Court have altered existing law on the subject of sex and homosexuality, and substantially affected matters of gender as expressed in law. But there has also been a social shift driven by medicine, largely based on response to the AIDS epidemic at its height in the 1980s and 1990s, but also in terms of other medical matters such as contraception and abortion. To a certain degree, seeing how these matters have progressed since the 1960s gives a good vantage to predicting where they will go in the future. In conclusion, I will look at the future of change on these matters, by examining what seems to be the avant garde regarding matters of sex and gender, the phenomenon of transsexualism. I hope an examination of transsexualism will point out some of the contradictions that still continue to exist in American ideas about matters of sex. We are accustomed to referring to a sexual revolution in the 1960s, but the actual consequences of that social shift were necessarily reflected in the law. To a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Jeanette Winterson s Story Of A Mother Story In Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal, Jeanette Winterson reflects on why she had to become a writer. Winterson s, alternative to not writing her life story would be losing herself in the narrow mesh of her adoptive mother s story (698): Winterson experiences a power struggle between her adoptive mother s narrative and her needs to preserve her personal story. Winterson s mother story is one of severe unhappiness and resentment, or an unlived life as Winterson describes it (695). Through her adoption, Winterson was thrust into a dysfunctional family and suffered extensive abuse at the hands of her angry mother. Winterson alludes the strength she has been forced to gain in order to survive. In a chaotic and abusive household, she was forced to become a bare knuckle fighter to endure the pandemonium (696). As Winterson says about her family dynamic, the one who wins is the one who hits the hardest (696). Winterson s life experiences portray a struggle to exist as she suggests, she has been fighting alone her whole life without anything to help her or back her up. Often being forced to fend for herself, thus revealing her need to preserve her story and prevent it from drowning in the tragic narrative of her mother. While Winterson s descriptive literary devices paint a picture of the pain and suffering she endured as an adopted child, the reader may struggle while interpreting the true source of her childhood pain. • 8. Outline For The Catcher In The Rye At the beginning of the story, Holden is introduced as an apathetic person. He has failed four out of five of his classes and has received a notice that he is being expelled at Pencey Prep school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Holden was scheduled to return home on a Wednesday, so he decided to go and visit Mr. Spencer, his history teacher, to say his goodbye. Mr. Spencer advises Holden to find direction in his life, which got Holden annoyed and dismissed everything Mr.Spencer has said. Holden returns to his dormitory, where he finds his neighbor, Robert Ackley and Ward Stradlater, a arrogant and self centered slob. Stradlater then asks Holden to write an English paper for him, while he prepares for his date with Jane Gallagher, a girl whom Holden has a crush on and used to date. When Stradlater returns, Holden asks Stradlater if he tried any sexual act with Jane. Stradlater tease Holden by indicating that he might have had sex with her, which result Holden becoming angry and punching Stradlater. That night Holden decide to leave Pencey and return to New York, where he would stay in a hotel instead of going home. • 9. Theme Of Love In Attars Conference Of The Birds And... Love is a central theme in both Attars Conference of the Birds and Dante s The Inferno. Whilst both explore this theme in varying ways and take extremely contrasting routes, their final destination to faith is achieved. The authors explore the divine through love and investigate the ways in which passion and devotion are intertwined. In both texts, as the characters fall deeper into love, they fall deeper into their faith. A spiritual journey led by passion is seen to be a constructive way to attain one s closeness to God. Attars description of a spiritual journey towards God is at times opposing to the path often associated with a religious experience, yet perfectly mimics his Suffi background. In Suffism a belief widely held is that complete submission to love ends in the soul becoming one with G d and this is shown by Sheikh Sam ans all consuming love for the Christian woman, which is not a path away from God but a path towards him. Dante s the Inferno is based off a completely contrasting belief system and culture, yet love seems to be the only guidance on his path through all and towards faith. Love is the very essence of the Conference of the birds, from Sufism s core belief that love is the path towards God, to the story posed in the text of Sheik Sam ans journey of love towards enlightenment. Love was the motivator for all of Sam ans actions on his journey away from Islam and towards the way . Within the first introductory lines of the poem, love is mentioned multiple times. It starts with Love thrives on inextinguishable pain and finishes with a convulsion of each heart yet in Dante s The Inferno, this is not as blatant. The text is surrounded by fury and anger, and many argue the existence of the text is a ploy to frighten and embitter people into commitment towards Christianity. We move through every sphere of hell, each entailing a more intense punishment, further embedding our faith to god out of the existence of fear. The notion of a fear of hell to motivate faith seems to be a theme for the text and a way to motivate the masses into believing in a Christian God. This seems to deter away from Attars optimistic tone and the acceptance he offers to various faiths and paths towards finding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Lord Chesterfield Character Analysis In Lord Chesterfield s letter to his son, he attempts to shape him into a respectable man worthy of inheriting the family wealth in ways that can still be recognized in parenting today. In modern times, parents put a high value on grades and schooling; Chesterfield chides his son to take more care in his accumulation of knowledge. Respect is also key, parents still demand the same respect from their children as Chesterfield expects from his son. Another thing that parents will often say is to learn from their mistakes which is something Chesterfield places high value on. The things Chesterfield tries to pass on in this letter to his son say a lot about his personal values, namely, the value he places on respect, education, and decision making. Throughout his letter, Lord Chesterfield makes small, passive aggressive remarks that hint underhandedly at the repercussions should his son choose not to respect what he is saying. He threatens that his young son can not have a shilling in the world but from [him] (27 28). Here, Chesterfield warns that he will not be allowed even a little bit of the family s fortune unless he gives it to him. Basically, Chesterfield is exposing the complete dependency his son has on him due to their aristocratic status. This also alludes to respect because if his son does not respect him, he will quiet literally have nothing. Additionally, Chesterfield is convinced [his son] will act right (32) not because he threatened him with what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Introversion In The Mid-17th Century In the seventeen years that I ve been alive, I have relished spending my days in a very particular manner. Alone. And that s not to say that spending time with my closest friends has never brought me pleasure; our late nights at wrestling competitions, playing video games, just shooting the breeze are some of my most enjoyable memories. It s just that there s something soothing about solitary reading, quiet introspection, and exercising alone toward which I gravitate. According to my mom it s because she didn t arrange enough playdates for me when I was a little kid. It may just be that I was born predestined to have an inclination towards solitude, like some puritanical hermit. But regardless of the reasons for my social preferences, what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Be it rappers, outspoken politicians, flamboyant actors, or any number of outgoing personas, Americans admire individuals for their attention commanding qualities. To quote Susan Cain, a former corporate lawyer, and Tedx acknowledged authority on introversion, shyness implies submissiveness. And in a competitive culture that reveres alpha dogs, one downmanship is probably the most damning trait of all. THAT is why I find it so important to separate the concept of introversion from shyness: To dispel any notion of weakness, to deny any perception of social disadvantage, and to debunk the idea that introverts are in any way incapable of being functional members of society. After all, I m a living contradiction to that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Importance Of The Re-Organization Of Society The Fabians believed strongly in the importance of the re organization of Society by creating local governments and working for the extinction of private property. They desired municipalization of Land and local government according to the Fabian Parliamentary League s Tract, The True Radical Programme (1887, p. 7). By giving power to local governments, the Society felt national wealth could be better circulated and citizens could be better represented. This radically modern notion is expressed in this strongly worded declaration, So long as the government is not government by the people, of the people, for the people, it can matter little to the people whether it s a seat at the capital or at the local centres (Fabian Parliamentary League, 1887, p. 4). As with many Socialist platforms, land and private property were constant issues. Similar to their radical neighbours the SDF, the Fabians believed in the extinction of private property meaning the removal of property from individual ownership and placing it back into the hands of the community (Shaw, 1899, p. 30). Another major objective of the movement was creating a more equal society where men and women were equal, and all had the right to vote ( The Guardian , 2001). Suffrage for ALL was incredibly important for the Fabians because they saw women and the poor to be equally affected by governmental laws (Fabian Parliamentary League, 1887, p. 5). During lunchtime at school, a few kids in my class placed thumbtacks on my teacher s chair (an old trick). She was understandably very upset when she sat on them. Not having DNA and fingerprint testing at her disposal, Ms. Hana issued the ultimatum that unless those who had committed the act came forward, she would be forced to punish the whole class. We had until the end of the day to produce the guilty persons. The next day Ms. Hana came in and said that we would all be facing detention that day since she had not managed to find out whodunit. Krista Lysack, author of Come Buy, Come Buy, has a different interpretation as to what pleasure is. She views pleasure as simply that which exceeds the norms of usefulness, not as a greedy grab for something one desires. Pleasure is not something that really needs to be justified or explained because it possesses value within itself. Explaining why you get pleasure from specific objects or tasks is something that seems very difficult to do, other than saying that you do it because you like it. Lysack later goes on to theorize that shopping becomes less and less about what is useful, and more about what allows us to be distracted and entertained. Pleasure to her is a state of being that is anything but stagnant and instead moves around to a variety of different areas. People s interests are bound to change over a lifetime as few people at age twenty are likely to get the same joy from tasks they performed when they were five. Acting on one s pleasures would have previously been seen as excessive because it was considered extreme to move away from what the norm was. The Victorian women were one of the first to break away and form their pleasures solely on what they felt was fun. No one can really give an exact reason for why we do things that are pleasurable because pleasure is different for everyone. Lysack s final and most meaningful take on pleasure is that it ... Otosclerosis is known to be a in an autosomal dominant pattern with variable penetrance. Which means that a child has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene if one parent is a carrier. Scientists have found that it can be multiple genes on the chromosomes that are affected that cause Otosclerosis. Showing that the disease does not just occur on one specific gene. Scientist where able to find in one case that a family had a mutation in a gene for collagen and antibodies against collagen, suggesting an autoimmune mechanism (Niedermeyer Arnold 2002). Then odor contacts the olfactory nerves at the top of the nasal passages. The the olfactory nerves send a signal to the olfactory bulb of the brain, and the nerve sends a signal to the front of the brain. The forebrain translates the signals of the odor into a specific smell (Swindle, Mark).
