How Is Escapism In Death Of A Salesman
In Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller utilizes motifs and symbols to show that one s dreams are not
always a reality, and that dreams can be preferable to facing the truth; therefore like Willy will try to
escape reality. A symbol that Miller uses to show escapism is the stockings that Willy gives to The
Woman, whom Willy has an affair with, but not giving any stockings to his own wife, Linda. This is a
symbol of infidelity since Willy is prioritizing another woman, above his own wife, Linda. This affair
may stem from the fact that Willy feels he is worthless and wants to have someone that appreciates his
work by complimenting him. The Woman tells Willy that [she] picked [him] (Miller 38), making
Willy feel that he deserves that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Willy s desire to plant seeds symbolizes his wish for a new beginning of success even though nothing
can grow in the garden. At this time, Willy is escaping reality because Willy wants a road to success to
redeem himself from his previous failures. Miller does not have Willy admit that his reality is different
from his ideal dreams because he wants him to have the hope that everything will be better even when
he does not have to face it. Willy and Linda both understand that his seeds will most likely not grow
because there is not enough sun. (72) to help the seeds grow. Miller makes Willy believe that planting
seeds will have a positive outcome so that his dreams will become a reality. However, in this situation,
it never will because the ingredients of success, like the sun, are not prominent in their lives therefore,
they cannot grow to be successful. The seeds could also symbolize Willy s attempt at being a good
father so that he can provide for his children; however, since he lost his job and cannot grow food, it is
seen as tragic. Miller has made Willy a pathetic character which allows it be acceptable for Willy to
want to escape reality into his own dreams and

Gene Patenting Research Paper
Modified Genes
Student X
University of the People
BUS 3305
Introduction A patent is a right, a monopoly of limited duration, in most cases it is for 20 years. It is a
right that prohibits other persons from making, using, selling or importing an invention. An invention
is one thing, a way of doing something, which is new, useful, and which does not already exist in
nature in the same form. There are several types of patent, but the one we are interested in is the
biological patent, which is a patent on an invention in the field of biology that allows the patent holder
to prevent others from making it from using it, selling it or importing it. The regulation of biological
patents varies from country to country and may include biological technologies and products.
Genetically modified organisms and genetic material. The patents of each country are valid only for
that country. Thus, a Canadian patent is only valid in Canada and has no application in Germany and
may contain specific rights, different from German patents. Each country grants its own patents, but
there are several broad principles that are common to all patent systems. A set of international
agreements establishes certain general standards that apply to patents; such as the duration of the
monopoly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Supreme Court has held that genes, even isolated in the laboratory, are in fact creations of nature and
therefore unpatentable. To be considered patentable, the gene should also have been modified in the
laboratory. This decision was made in response to a lawsuit against Myriad Genetics, which holds
patents on the genes that determine predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer; The BRCA1 and

Cultural Capital Pierre Bourdieu
Pierre Bourdiieu was a sociologist, anthropologist, philospher and a notable public scholar. In one of
Bourdieu theories, we wrote about social and cultural capital and also how food is connected to social
class. Social capital is a structure of factual documentation used to study and interprete social
development. Cultural capital is the concept and awareness that people draw upon as they engaged in
social life. This essay will be Pierre Bourdieu s theory of social and cultural capital and also his
analysis of food and its connection to social class.

INSTITUTIONALIZED: cultural capital consists of institutional recognition, most often in the form

In relation to Bourdieu s other concepts, the concept of cultural capital is fundamentally linked to the
concept of fields and habitus. A field can be any structure of a social relation. It is also a site of strggle

Reactions to Accepting a Newcomer in the Team
New team members are likely to be met with resistance by the rest of the team, as the group starts to
become suspicious and feels that it is more difficult to accept the newcomer. The manager has the task
of bringing balance into the team by emphasizing the reasons for which the new member of the team
arrived. In order to avoid paranoia from affecting the whole team and thus making it less productive,
the manager needs to get actively engaged in creating a strong connection between the newcomer and
the rest of the team. He or she needs to act as fast as possible so as for the team to experience little to
no problems. Existing team members are likely to consider that a newcomer is a threat and that he or
she is going to generate a lot of negativity within the team as he or she is not equally experienced in
dealing with situations that the team is accustomed to going through. Old timers are typically inclined
to believe that the overall productivity of the team will be negatively affected by the arrival of a
newcomer, as he or she needs to be instructed in regard to his or her tasks and as the rest of the team is
probable to lose important resources in the process. Although team turnovers can create a lot of
problems within a group, they can also have positive effects on the team because of the new ideas and
unbiased thinking that is being brought into the group. A team turnover can provide the group with a
series of opportunities and one of the most important is related to

Analysis Of Gibson s `` Television Special `` Polygamy On...
Gibson (2010) also frames polygamy in the context of women struggles and not being able to control
their own lives. Gibson gives his opinion on polygamy and how it violates the Christian family.
Gibson (2010) argues that polygamy came about because of systematic patriarchy. Gibson gives
information on Anderson Cooper s television special Polygamy in America, Cult or Calling? which
discusses the capture of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs. Gibson (2010) explains how America s recent
fascination with polygamy only covers one aspect of it referring to the main coverage of modern day
Mormon polygamy. The researcher also gives information on the change of polygamous relationships
over time. Gibson (2010) reflects that in modern day polygamous marriages people are able to pick
their spouses. Women are actually enjoying being in a polygamous marriage instead of being forced
into it.
Simpson (2007) elaborates on the culture and faith of most polygamous. The author states that the
history of Mormonism has involved to highly complex contacts and negotiations with non Mormons
in their attempts to convert, resist, or appease outsiders. Mormons have engaged in a distinctive
dialectic of secrecy and self disclosure. (p.11) In some cases, Simpson (2007) suggests Mormons feel
they are being forced to be modernized. Non Mormons in the Utah territory and the United States saw
Utah s acceptance of Mormonism and women as a shameful attempt to solidify the church s political
power.

Anne Bradstreet s Poem
I choose for my reseach essay assignment the poem In Reference to Her Children, 23 June, 1659 by
Anne Bradstreet as the earliest Native American writing, and the first in a long line of American poets
who took their consolation not from thealogy , but from the wondrous works , as she wrote, that I see,
the vast frame of the heaven and the earth, the order of all things. In Anne works, we see the writing
prolifically in poetry form, and she deliver a great massage and moral for her religious values, for her

Small Rodents Make Wonderful Pets Essays
Anyone who has owned one would readily aggree that hamsters, girlbils, and mice provide an owner
with hours of amusement and years of companionship. Rabbits are fabulous for those who are looking
for a quiet playmate, while rats and ferrets are hyperactive and surprisingly intelligent. Guinea pigs are
another very popular choice for a small pet. A website dedicated to guinea pigs boasts on their front
page that there is no question that guinea pigs make excellent pets [and are] docile, low maintenance,

A block of wood, on the other hand, has a glorious, rich history. Imagine that your beloved block of
wood was once part of a hardy, eighty foot tall tree, who had majestically grown from a tiny acorn in
the dense forrests of Canada! Who would want to be introducing a new pet to their friends and say
This is Bob and he came from the pet store and well...uhh...that s about it, actually ? The very thought
of it is embarassing. Score one for the block of wood.
If their pathetic past isn t enough to deter a potential owner from getting a guinea pig, next consider
the housing requirements of the creature. Unless planning to allow the guinea pig to rome free in the
house, a sturdy (and expensive) cage will be necessary. An absolute bare minimum of two square feet
of floor space is required, but very often cages offer four or more square feet of space. The smaller,
starter cages can cost anywhere from fourty to eighty dollars, and as the space in the cage increases, so
does the price. The cage must be placed with care in a location that is free from direct sunlight and
drafts. Bedding, another requirement for a healthy pet, is also costly and is constantly needed (Guinea
pigs soil their litter very quickly and efficently, but we ll get to that later). In addition to a cage and
bedding, it is also generally a good idea to provide containers for food (hay, scientific pellet mix, and

their fathers made them try and forget and redeem their deaths. A difference between these two movies

Decision Making Skills in Business Environment Essay
Decision making can be defined as a mental process of making choices among possible alternatives to
make a practical decision (Reason, 1990; Wang, 2000). From selecting what items to buy in a
supermarket to deciding which television channel to watch, we often have to make decisions in
different conditions, particularly when we are facing uncertainties and trade offs. Admittedly, decision
making skills have become increasing important when it comes to the highly competitive and ever
changing business world. In view of that, a variety of models have been developed by the scholars
from all around the world in an attempt to conceptualise the decision making process and maximise its
potential output. In this paper, we will look at the role of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In short, agreement between different stakeholders is the deciding factor of an ultimate decision in
Carnegie Model. Although a consensus has been reached with the agreement of different stakeholders
and parties, some critics pointed out that this will lead to a greater problem which they term it as
satisficing . Satisficing means an organisation accepts a satisfactory rather than optimal approach to
maximise the performance. In layman s term, it means the final decision made by the coalition is just
satisfying the stakeholders sitting on the board but that solution may not be the best one to optimise
the performance of an organisation. Secondly, managers are concerned with immediate problem and
short run solutions or what Cyert and March (1963) termed as problemistic search . Problemistic
search simply means the managers look around the environment to look around for a quick solution to
solve the task as they don t expect a perfect solution when it is ill structured. To sum up the points,
Daft (2010) opined that the managers normally look for a satisfactory solution that first emerges as
they are constrained by several factors mentioned in the last paragraph. The Carnegie Model is
particularly useful when it comes to problem identification stage. One recent example would be the

The Endocrine System Essay
The endocrine system is a group of glands distributed throughout the human body. This group of
glands secretes substances called hormones. These hormones are dumping into the bloodstream (Shier,
Butler Lewis, 2009). The endocrine system does not have a single anatomic location. It is dispersed
throughout the human body. The final purpose of this process is to control, regulate, and coordinate
the functioning of the human body. Some body functions can be activated or inhibited by hormones,
which are secreted in very small quantities. The hormone related diseases may be due to hyper
secretion, or a hypo secretion. The hormones secreted by the endocrine glands regulate growth,
development and function of many tissues, and coordinate the ... Show more content on

Hyperthyroidism (too much hormone) may result Grave s disease. Symptoms include anxiety, rapid
heart rate, diarrhea and weight loss, nervousness, anxiety, and irritability.
The parathyroid glands are located in front of the base of the neck around the thyroid gland and
secrete parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone regulates blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
This hormone (parathyroid hormone) affects the bones, kidney, and intestine (Shier et al., 2009).
Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys (Shier et al., 2009). The adrenal glands
secrete hormones that increase heart rate, the force of cardiac muscle contraction, breathing rate,
elevate blood pressure and blood glucose level. This activity prepares the body foe energy expending
action, sometimes called fight or flight responses (Shier et al., 2009).
According to Shier, Butler Lewis (2009) other glands that produce hormones and thus are parts of the
endocrine system include the pineal gland and the thymus gland . Shier et al., 2009 argued the pineal
gland, located deep between the cerebral hemispheres, secretes hormone melatonin that acts on certain
brain regions that function as a biological clock. The changing levels of melatonin across 24 hours
enable the body to know when day is and when is night.

Jorge Lima s Ted Talk Speech
The circle of life has continued. Something has died, and now something new must take its place. In
this case, that something is the ancient metaphor of the tree, but what is the something new? Manuel
Lima believes that he has discovered a new metaphor that is on the horizon. In Lima s TED Talk
speech A Visual History of Human Knowledge, Lima discusses the metaphor of the tree of knowledge
and how it connects all things. Lima s primary concern is that this picture is outdated and offers a new
alternative: the network. Lima is correct that the metaphor of the tree is outdated; however, the
network is not a sufficient replacement. The metaphor is lacking in many areas ranging from
showcasing accurate connections to fulfilling the basic purposes of a metaphor. Lima begins his
speech by analyzing the ways humans have been organizing information throughout the centuries. He
discusses the origins of the tree metaphor to describe the wealth of information that was being
discovered at that time and how the metaphor essentially took the world by storm. He provided
examples of the tree in instances ranging from family lineage to Darwin s Tree of Life ; however,
Lima has come to the conclusion that the tree is outdated, and society is begging for a new, more
accurate representation of knowledge and being. He states that nowadays we are really facing new
complex, intricate challenges that cannot be understood by simply employing a simple tree diagram
(Lima). With all

Unskilled workers and farmers who rented their land ranked among the poor, or lower sort. In

Exploring Theme In The Raven
Exploring Theme in The Raven And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain thrilled
me filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before... presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then
no longer... here I opened wide the door; darkness there and nothing more. These lines are from the
notorious poem, The Raven written by the great author, Edgar Allan Poe. In this poem, The Raven ,
the author, Edgar Allan Poe, begins with the narrator of the poem, a young man mourning the loss of
his love, Lenore. While the narrator is reading in his bedroom, he hears several tapping sounds and
finally resorts to opening the window. When he opens it, a raven flies in. The raven only replies to the

In stanza 14, the narrator says, Quaff, oh quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore! This
allusion to Greek mythology shows that the author will use something to forget the pain of losing
Lenore. In this poem, the nepenthe is a book of folklore. The narrator thinks that if he reads his books,
it will end the suffering he is experiencing. Another example is in stanza 17, the poem reads, Take thy
beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door! These metaphors convey that the raven
has told the narrator something he does not want to believe and demands him to leave immediately.
The raven tells the narrator he will never be able to hold Lenore again, not even in Heaven, which
enrages the narrator. The use of Poe s figurative language has revealed his sadness and sorrow he has
for Lenore. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe has become well known over the years for its sad and
mysterious plot. It was developed and supported with the help of imagery, word choice, and figurative
language, which helped establish the theme. The use of a raven gives the reader an eerie feel when
reading the poem. The symbol of the raven, which is used to imply death and grief, reveals the sorrow
the narrator has for the death of his beloved Lenore. The narrator s encounter with the raven causes
him to realize that Lenore is never coming

Ancient Mesopotamian Writing
By 3000 B.C. in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq), and then soon after in Egypt, and by 1500 B.C. in
China, people were scribbling, sketching and telling their world about their culture in a very
permanent way. When ancient Mesopotamians started settling down onto farms surrounding the first
cities, life became a bit more complicated. Agriculture required expertise and detailed recordkeeping,
two elements that led directly to the invention of writing, historians say. The first examples of writing
were pictograms used by temple officials to keep track of the inflows and outflows of the city s grain
and animal stores which, in the bigger Sumerian urban centers such as Ur, were big enough to make
counting by memory unreliable. Officials began using

Analysis Of The Log From The Sea Of Cortez
Enduring Perspectives
By studying the history of Native Americans, we can understand some of their characteristics,
qualities, and perspectives regarding America s landscape. Many of these still persist today in either
the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today in
various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez,
and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to
Rainy Mountain describe this effect.
Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived
unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac s economy revolved around trading small animals (e.g. beavers).
Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant
13). A problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal s population is being
depleted until it is too late.
The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native
Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which
was unsustainable considering how important the Buffalos were for them (Merchant 16). When the
horse arrived the Native Americans became more efficient hunters. However, their lives became less
sustainable because they became dependent on the horse and buffalo population. Again, this is a
problem because it is difficult

Huey P. Long s Speech
Huey P. Long s speech was judged based on his practices as a Louisiana senator and governor,
however it had the potential to be so much more had he lived to continue his legacy. People appeared
to be afraid of how Governor Long operated within the legislative system of Louisiana because of the
fact that, he tended to find his way around legal statutes that hindered his agenda. Some could argue
that he stepped out of the bounds of power that reigns in a representative of a democratic nation,
however he wound up being one of the most effective public servants in the country. Amidst the Great
Depression, Governor Long gave Louisiana s economy a huge lift with the vast construction of
bridges, schools, and roads. In fact the state of Louisiana has not had anything close to such an
economic boost as to what Huey p. Long offered since that time. As time has passed, Louisiana has
become infamous for its lack of proper public education, especially regarding grades one through
twelve. This lack of proper education has become constantly associated with the state since Huey
Long s assassination. Despite the controversy over how Long executed his political agenda, it cannot
be refuted on how productive and beneficial his reign was for the state.
For instance, in Huey P Long s speech directed towards the entirety of the United State s population
vied for the spread of wealth around the country. Initially he proclaimed how absurd it was that nearly

Gender Bias In Sports Essay
Highly accomplished female athletes are often infantilized by sport commentators by referring to them
as girls or
young ladies whereas skilled male athletes are rarely (if ever) referred to as boys (Messner et al.,
1993; Wensing Bruce,
2003). A recent headline in the UK s Daily Mail regarding the Sochi Olympics read, Curl power: Girls
sweep their way to bronze as Britain equals its best ever Winter Olympics tally (Daily Mail Reporter,
2014). Not surprisingly, the male curlers were not referred to as boys when they won a silver medal
the next day.
Commentators further infantilize female athletes by calling them by their first name only whereas this
rarely occurs with male athletes. Messner et al. (1993) found that women s ... Show more content on

For example, Billings (2007) examined the media commentary for men s and women s diving,
gymnastics, swimming, and track and field competitions during the 2004 Summer Olympics and
discovered that gender biased commentary occurred more often in the sports considered artistic (e.g.,
gymnastics, diving) with the greatest gender bias between men and women s gymnastics. Similarly,
Angilini, Billings, and MacAuthor (2013) found the greatest amount of gender biased commentary in
figure skating in their examination of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Typically, the negative framing described in the previous paragraphs occurs alongside positive

to simultaneously acknowledge the changing norms regarding women s involvement in sport and yet

How Did Lolne Contribute To Lincoln s Childhood
Born as Alex Alexander Milne, A. A. Milne was born in London, England to John Vine Milne and

more specifically his, Milne states that childhood is not the happiest time of one s life, but only to a
child is pure happiness possible. Afterwards it is tainted with the knowledge that it will not last, and
the fear that one will have to pay for it (Bright 1). Milne s surroundings and upbringings lead to his
work being known and appreciated around the world. Milne does not depict much sentiment in
childhood at all, especially his (Mulder). During his adolescence, being the youngest of three boys
meant that he did not get much attention. At least in his perspective, it went mainly to his two older
brothers making him feel very neglected. Even then he still did not get much of a bond with either

Exploring Judaism
Judaism, which originated in the middle east, is one of the oldest religions in the world. Judaism is the
religion from where Catholicism and Islam have their roots. The main difference between Judaism and
the previously mentioned religions is that Judaism is based on the old testament entirely excluding the
new testaments in its teachings. Jews believe that they are the people chosen by God and that because
of the covenant they have the duty, more than any other group of people, to keep the law of God. The
law of God in Judaism comes in the form of the Torah. The books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,

When you enter the temple the object that stands out the most is the big candlelight like structure on
the upper part of the wall behind the stage. Later I learned that the wall below the candlelight could be
open to reveal a sanctuary that is supposed to represent the arc that the Jews carried through the
dessert. Although the one in the temple does not utilize olive oil or real fire, the candlelight on top
represents the eternal light that the sanctuary had which burn with pure olive oil. The arc is an
extremely important symbol in Judaism. It contains several beautiful Torah s with covers with
different captivating designs. The beauty of the Torah s cover is important because it is the word of
God and it is a way too honor God. The Torah s are to be written in parchment by a Jewish scribe who

How Crowdfunding Campaign On Culture And Civic Engagement
Introduction Did you know the pedestal the Statue of Liberty sits on is the result of crowdfunding?
Joseph Pulitzer utilized his paper the New York World to raise $100,000 in five months (Davies,
2014). This application serves as an early example of the power of crowdfunding 100 years before the
advent of the Internet. Businesspeople and citizens rallied to a civic cause so a gift from the French
government could find a home. Pulitzer used a single collection point to raise money from an
enormous pool of donors and pledged amounts from pocket change upwards. Many crowdfunding
experts consider The Statue of Liberty project the most successful crowdfunding campaign. This paper
explores crowdfunding campaigns on culture and civic engagement, how it aligns with a corporation s
mission, vision, and values, and the impact on a business s profile and profit. Efforts Crowdfunding is
a phenomenon that emerged over the last ten years. It started with donations and reward based
crowdfunding and morphed into an option for companies to gain assistance in funding their product or
idea. Studies indicate crowdfunding eliminates the geographic restrictions experienced in venture
capital without giving up control of the business (Agrawal, Catalini, Goldfarb, 2013). As
crowdfunding matures, it can become more than a financing contrivance and develop into a way
individuals can participate in shaping their environment through meaningful projects. The applications

My College Life
College life is hard to adjust to no matter how many motivational speeches you get in life. I knew
college wasn t going to be like high school, but it s one thing to say and another to see. I closed one
chapter in my life to open what seems to be a whole new book. Once I graduated high school, my life
was bombarded with change. Some of the change was pleasurable and the others were heartbreaking.
College put emphasis on independents which is something I battle with.
Before starting LaGuardia, I was already petrified. All of my friends had already started college and
were already taking exams. It felt wrong that I hadn t started already. Having to take 2 hours of my
day to make a schedule was already exhausting. I had no idea what the class SYF 101 was which
scared me. I asked people if they knew what it might be but not one person did. Once I started the
class I found out it was an intro to psychology. I was relieved Nevertheless, I was excited to start PSY
101. I always love learning why people do the things they do. I remember I check rate my professor
and nothing popped up for my professor. It made me nervous for my first class which happened to be
on a Saturday. All in all my professor turned out to be great and psychology ended up being my
favorite class. There was one time in class that I ll never forget. My professor asked us to write a letter
to a child in our lives for their 18 birthday. We had to tell them what we wish for them and how they
changed us. I remember

The Disconnection Between Aurora And Felicia
The character most important to me is Felicia, Aurora s mom, because she is like the earth that tries to
convince Aurora that Echo Park is part of her life, because it s their home. In chapter 2, the
disconnection between Aurora and Felicia originates with the death of Alma. Alma dies, when it was
supposed to be Aurora the one that should have died. The only thing that saved her was not following
Felicia s orders, so she moved and didn t receive the bullet that killed Alma. After this event, Aurora
starts to not follow her mom s orders and ends up leaving Echo Park, their home, and her mom. She
decides that she doesn t want to live her entire life in Echo Park; she wants something more so she
leaves in the search of it. Unlike Aurora, Felicia ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter 8, the connection that is developed between her and Aurora shows that Aurora could come
back to Echo Park. Felicia s decision of giving her dog, Blackjack, to Aurora and making her accept
that it is her dog now, represents her accepting that Echo Park is her home. Through this act, Felicia s
intentions of making Aurora realize that Echo Park is part of her identity and her home is proven.
Therefore, when the dog escapes and gets lost, she sends Aurora to find it as if she sends her to realize
that Echo Park is her home. Through her journey of finding the dog, Aurora finds herself learning
what Echo Park has become from what she remembers. This shows that Felicia is the earth because
she never left Echo Park and she wanted her daughter to not leave it either. She wanted Aurora to not
forget where her real home is, which identifies her and makes her part of Echo Park too. I think Felicia
s character is important to the novel and the realization of Aurora towards Echo Park being her home.
I believe we need to remember from where we come and be proud of our roots because that is what
identifies us and makes us unique. It is not wrong to want to succeed in life like Aurora wanted to, but
we also need to know and accept ourselves, which includes our background and history. Our history is
what identifies us and makes us stand out from

Braveheart Independence
The country of Scotland was conquered following the death of Alexander III. With no heir to the
throne, Scotland was easily captured and taken over by the King of England. The film Braveheart is an
adaption of these historical events. In the film, the national identity of the Scottish people evolved in
comparison from the beginning of the film to the end of it. There had always been a huge chasm
between the different classes. With peasants on one end and the nobles on the other. This class
separation resulted in the people of these groups to hold different views. During most of the film, the
peasants all listened to what William Wallace had to say and followed the idea he had planted in their
heads. The idea being, freedom. The nobles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This resulted in people not identifying with people from other villages situated all across Scotland.
Each individual fought their own battles for their own benefits rather than the entire country as a
whole. Wallace and his clan started the fighting to avenge the death of Murron, Wallace s wife.
Wallace leads his can to kill the English garrison in his hometown to get a point across. This moment
of power sparks the idea of rebelling against the English. As the legend of Wallace grew, so did the
support. Clans from all over Scotland decided to join him in his fight that originally started as revenge,
but transformed into a fight for freedom. As more and more battles were won, the legend of Wallace
travelled all across the vast lands of Scotland. The death of the leader of the rebellion didn t stop the
movement towards freedom there. William Wallace became a martyr to the people of Scotland.
Towards the end of the film, there was a sense of patriotism towards the country, which wasn t present
at the start. This was due to the uniting of the people with a common goal. William Wallace started the
movement towards freedom, Robert Bruce encouraged the idea, and the people of Scotland completed

A Short history of wine)
By the middle half of the 1800 s Phylloxera, a disease in the vines destroyed over two thirds of the
vineyards in Europe and by 1875 Australia fell victim (John Beeston. (2008). History of Wine in
Australia) However with the strict regulations implemented in Australia, South Australia s Barossa
Valley remained free from Phylloxera and today has some of the oldest vines remaining in the world.
By the 1980 s domestic wine consumption per capita had reached 17.3 litres, as the bag in a box an
Australian innovation had been perfected. (John Beeston. (2008). History of Wine in Australia)
In the Table Fig.1 below you can see and overview of the Australian wine sector in 2007, it shows
Australia s biggest export markets as well as the most produced varietals in the country the top being
Chardonnay. In the last twenty years the Australian industry however has suffered and Bob Oatley
former owner of Rosemount got out at the right time and made a fortune. It was only in the 1980 s that
governments sponsored growers to pull out their vines to overcome the glut of wine grapes. With low
grape prices in the last seven years there has been debate for yet another sponsored vine pull. (Nance
Haxton (2006) Grape Glut ) Still today wineries continue to sell clean skins to try and combat their
poor sales at basically a

Robustness in HDFS
Robustness in HDFS The primary objective of HDFS is to store data reliably in the case of system
failures or crashes. Three common type of failure occurrences are: o DataNode failure o NameNode
failure o Network Partition The above diagram depicts that each DataNode, which sends a Heartbeat
message to the NameNode periodically. A subset of DataNodes can lose connectivity with the
NameNode which is caused by a network partition. The DataNodes without recent Heartbeats are
marked as dead by the NameNodes. The NameNodes does not forward any new IO requests to the
marked DataNodes. Data which was registered on the dead DataNode is not available to HDFS.
DataNode death or shut down can cause the replication factor of some blocks to fall below their
specified value. The NameNode constantly tracks the blocks which need to be replicated and initiates
replication whenever it is essential. The requirement of re replication may arise in case of : o A replica
becomes corrupted. o A DataNode is no longer available. o Replication factor of a file is increased
beyond the limits. o A hard disk on a DataNode has failed or crashed. Cluster rebalancing The HDFS
architecture provides compatibility for data rebalancing schemes. Provision is provided that data
might be automatically moved from one DataNode to another if the free space on a DataNode falls
below a certain threshold. In a particular situation where there is a

understand that Joe and Bill have had an excellent working relationship, which has been going on
since the previous year. During this time a contract was agreed upon, Joe and Bill maintained a social
relationship as well. It was not till recently with contract renewal has the business aspect affected their

Canon Essay
Good morning fellow English enthusiasts. I would firstly like to thank you the opportunity talk to you
about the importance and the value of the canon in our school systems. The literary canon is a
controversial topic between english scholars and it has been debated as to whether or not it is
important to continue teaching the canon to students. The canon is quintessential to the school
program and will forever be the what makes Literature special. The canon is the be all end all of
english texts, in its most simple form the canon is a list of texts which is considered to be the best
works of Literature in human history. However each person s opinion on what constitutes a literary
text can differ from one person to another. For me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The selection for canonical texts is still controversial as there are many criteria required for selection
into the canon such as use of language, imagery, it must stand the test of time, and reflects on the
social views at the time the text was written. Literature and the canon is still important. What do we
lose when we don t teach students about it? This is the question which I will answer for you here
today.
A range of educators including Emily Chiariello have debated that Literature is a waste of time and
should not be taught, because of the difference between the language now and the language that was
used when the texts were written this is what she means when they ask Is the instructional time spent
struggling to understand classics archaic language worth it? Does this lead to teachers reading for
students? in her article titled A Classic Debate . When she says this she ignores how the difference in
language can highlight messages in the novel, as Literature is art. When Edgar Allen Poe wrote his
poems there was a beauty to his words and the way sentences were formed, this only added to the
deep meaning in his poems such as one quote from his poem The Premature Burial The boundaries
which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and

The phrase, the American Dream is a national ethos of the United States and the idea that clutched

not they left their countries because of poverty, war, or civil or religious oppression, they believed that
in America, they could achieve a better quality of life if they work hard enough. It was their reason
and motivation to move. I, as an another immigrant who explored many countries and settled in the
US, can understand how they feel about the Dream. However, in the last decades, American attitudes

ABSTRACT
Only once in a lifetime is one blessed to witness legendary athletes perform and break records. I was
fortunate enough to witness the even during my generation when Michael Phelps smashed world
records in 1 sensational week that took the sporting world by storm. Phelps rose to stardom and soon
was minting millions through endorsement deals not only in the US but across the globe as well. At a
quick glance, one would assume that Phelps became a sensation overnight. But a deeper research into
the strategy that made Michael Phelps the sportsman he is, is astounding and shows that a proper
brand building, hard work and commitment towards the set targets and goals can reap dividends. The
following case study answers some of the questions asked in the book Strategic Management by

The high motivational skills of the manager will definitely make reaching the target much easier than
if the employees are not motivated. Describe the organisational culture of Microsoft as identified by
Steve Ballmer. The recent culture in the Microsoft organisation can be described as an innovative
culture where Microsoft are trying to develop something brand new and something that no other
organisation has. Explain the meaning of business aims, and use in managing large organisations such
as Microsoft. An aim in an organisation can be seen as a direction in which the business can move on
this path certain objectives and targets can be set to further improve the organisations structure. The
objective and targets that may be set can aspire and motivate the workforce. Aims could look at the
company s weaknesses and strengths, the weaknesses can be reduced in the future by choosing
appropriate objectives and the strengths can be further strengthened by setting targets which once
again will motivate the workers. Having an aim will set order in the work place which will lead to
sharing among staff and more accountability cooperation. An aim is like a mission which the business
is striving to achieve and complete as many objectives along the way as possible. Microsoft has four
aims and they are building industry trust, building customer loyalty, altering structure of the company
and devolving power from the top. Analyse four

My Favorite Quote Analysis
My favorite quote will always be by Sappho in which she says, Someone, I tell you, in another time
will remember us. She was right. She s remembered for being a gay poet and is immortalized despite a
lot of her works not being found completely. It s one of my favorite quotes because identifying as a
nonbinary queer person who also likes girls, I can relate to Sappho a lot when she writes about her
desire for love and personal heartbreaks. This quote also brings me ease as even in another time
someone will still remember me. I think we all want to leave a legacy of some sort, and for me I want
my legacy to be centered around my experience and accomplishments as an American born Punjabi
artist and social activist, who was also highly active in the LGBTQ+ community. I want someone to
remember me because it is a vicious cycle that people of color and members of the color in the
LGBTQ+ community get forgotten in history. History is white washed. But the idea that I will do
enough in my life to be remembered in some shape or form, reminds me that my efforts and failures as
a Punjabi artist and social activist are just part of a legacy I am starting.
Moving on, my strength and determination did not magically appear one day. I had a lot of amazing
people who are a part of my support network who helped show me what healthy self love and growth
is supposed to be. One of the people I will be highlighting is my AP English teacher. Candice Ligator,
was one of the best, and one of my favorite teachers in my high school career. She was a big part of
my support system when it came to being a trans and queer student who had a lot of family issues. She
was also a big inspiration to me as she told us stories full of struggles growing as a teacher. She talked
about how starting off as a teacher at first made her cry every night, showing me that it takes
persistence to be adept in a profession. Her choices on the pieces of literature she taught were
engaging as they touched upon feminism, gay rights, and race. This allowed me to explore both my
interest in writing and in social justice. Reading about personal experiences from Mary Shelley, Oscar
Wilde, and Ralph Ellison was inspiring as it allowed me to see that I can

The Big Bang Theory Of Sarcasm
1. Chin s main point about sarcasm is that it is very useful and that it is an necesary tool to
understanding each other, especially in our culture. Chin says, Sarcasm detection is an essential skill if
one is going to function in a modern society dripping with irony. The people that can t detect sarcasm
are socially inept, so to speak, because they will take what is said at face value, instead of
understanding the nuances of what isn t being said. 2. Sarcasm is a neurological ability, not just a style
of talking that some people use. It takes more brain power to percieve irony than regular conversation
does. Like mental bodybuilding, it forces the brain to extend itself to understand what the truth is
behind the sarcasm. The article states that, Sarcasm seems to exercise the brain more than sincere
statements do. Scientists who have monitored the electrical activity of the brains of test ... Show more

Someone who can not understand sarcasm can stand out from others in social situations, like the
character Sheldon Cooper on the tv show The Big Bang Theory. Although his character is a genius, he
has to work harder to understand some of the most basic interactions between the other characters.
The ability to detect sarcasm is a natural occurence in most people from ages as young as four years
old. People that are unable to detect sarcasm may be autistic, have had brain injuries or lesions, or be
schizophrenic. Dementia can cause a person to lose the ability to detect sarcasm and may be one of the
early signs of the disease. 4. In Greek, sarcasm means to tear flesh like dogs. Another way to say this
would be that the mean, cutting remarks of sarcasm can hurt someone. An example would be when
someone is being sarcastic, but the intention of the remark is to hurt or demean the person it is being
said to. People that are trying to percieve themselves to be more popular than they are might be more
prone to this, as a defense mechanism against what others might think about

Jealousy And Discrimination In Shakespeare s Othello
People discriminate for many different reasons: terror, jealousy, the desire for power, or a need to
dissociate themselves from other people. They can, thus, use someone s skin color (a hereditary trait
that cannot be altered) to express their hatred. In Shakespeare s play Othello, Othello, is a happily
wedded man and despite his African heritage, is a well respected general in the Venetian army. At the
beginning of the play, Othello has not experienced any type of discrimination, as of yet. However, by
Iago pointing out to Othello the existence of racist concepts and persuading him on taking action
against the individuals who are presumably harboring racist fueled indignations, Iago successfully
causes the ruin Othello and his wife Desdemona. Race is an issue throughout the play because of Iago
s hatred towards Othello. Also, Iago oftentimes uses racial insults against Othello. For example, when
Iago finds out about the elopement between Desdemona and Othello, he informs her father by saying

Due to the color of his skin other people also treat and view Othello as an outsider. Iago and Brabantio
are the ones who mainly see Othello as an outsider. This is obvious through the ways they talk about
him. For example, Iago suggests that Othello is an outsider when he is predicting that the offspring of
Iago and Desdemona will be subhuman. you ll have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse; you
ll have your nephews neigh to you; you ll have coursers for cousins and jennets for germans ( Othello
). Furthermore, depictions such as, thick lips, and the devil, from Iago are used in the play to ostracize

  • 2. How Is Escapism In Death Of A Salesman In Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller utilizes motifs and symbols to show that one s dreams are not always a reality, and that dreams can be preferable to facing the truth; therefore like Willy will try to escape reality. A symbol that Miller uses to show escapism is the stockings that Willy gives to The Woman, whom Willy has an affair with, but not giving any stockings to his own wife, Linda. This is a symbol of infidelity since Willy is prioritizing another woman, above his own wife, Linda. This affair may stem from the fact that Willy feels he is worthless and wants to have someone that appreciates his work by complimenting him. The Woman tells Willy that [she] picked [him] (Miller 38), making Willy feel that he deserves that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Willy s desire to plant seeds symbolizes his wish for a new beginning of success even though nothing can grow in the garden. At this time, Willy is escaping reality because Willy wants a road to success to redeem himself from his previous failures. Miller does not have Willy admit that his reality is different from his ideal dreams because he wants him to have the hope that everything will be better even when he does not have to face it. Willy and Linda both understand that his seeds will most likely not grow because there is not enough sun. (72) to help the seeds grow. Miller makes Willy believe that planting seeds will have a positive outcome so that his dreams will become a reality. However, in this situation, it never will because the ingredients of success, like the sun, are not prominent in their lives therefore, they cannot grow to be successful. The seeds could also symbolize Willy s attempt at being a good father so that he can provide for his children; however, since he lost his job and cannot grow food, it is seen as tragic. Miller has made Willy a pathetic character which allows it be acceptable for Willy to want to escape reality into his own dreams and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a right that prohibits other persons from making, using, selling or importing an invention. An invention is one thing, a way of doing something, which is new, useful, and which does not already exist in nature in the same form. There are several types of patent, but the one we are interested in is the biological patent, which is a patent on an invention in the field of biology that allows the patent holder to prevent others from making it from using it, selling it or importing it. The regulation of biological patents varies from country to country and may include biological technologies and products. Genetically modified organisms and genetic material. The patents of each country are valid only for that country. Thus, a Canadian patent is only valid in Canada and has no application in Germany and may contain specific rights, different from German patents. Reactions to Accepting a Newcomer in the Team New team members are likely to be met with resistance by the rest of the team, as the group starts to become suspicious and feels that it is more difficult to accept the newcomer. The manager has the task of bringing balance into the team by emphasizing the reasons for which the new member of the team arrived. In order to avoid paranoia from affecting the whole team and thus making it less productive, the manager needs to get actively engaged in creating a strong connection between the newcomer and the rest of the team. He or she needs to act as fast as possible so as for the team to experience little to no problems. Existing team members are likely to consider that a newcomer is a threat and that he or she is going to generate a lot of negativity within the team as he or she is not equally experienced in dealing with situations that the team is accustomed to going through. Old timers are typically inclined to believe that the overall productivity of the team will be negatively affected by the arrival of a newcomer, as he or she needs to be instructed in regard to his or her tasks and as the rest of the team is probable to lose important resources in the process. Gibson gives his opinion on polygamy and how it violates the Christian family. Gibson (2010) argues that polygamy came about because of systematic patriarchy. Gibson gives information on Anderson Cooper s television special Polygamy in America, Cult or Calling? which discusses the capture of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs. The researcher also gives information on the change of polygamous relationships over time. Gibson (2010) reflects that in modern day polygamous marriages people are able to pick their spouses. Rabbits are fabulous for those who are looking for a quiet playmate, while rats and ferrets are hyperactive and surprisingly intelligent. Guinea pigs are another very popular choice for a small pet. A website dedicated to guinea pigs boasts on their front page that there is no question that guinea pigs make excellent pets [and are] docile, low maintenance, and unbelievably cute. I strongly beg to differ, unless docile means boring and low maintenance means that you only need to scoop up piggy pellet poop every few minutes. Calling a guinea ... Score one for the block of wood. If their pathetic past isn t enough to deter a potential owner from getting a guinea pig, next consider the housing requirements of the creature. Unless planning to allow the guinea pig to rome free in the house, a sturdy (and expensive) cage will be necessary. An absolute bare minimum of two square feet of floor space is required, but very often cages offer four or more square feet of space. The smaller, starter cages can cost anywhere from fourty to eighty dollars, and as the space in the cage increases, so does the price. The cage must be placed with care in a location that is free from direct sunlight and drafts. Bedding, another requirement for a healthy pet, is also costly and is constantly needed (Guinea pigs soil their litter very quickly and efficently, but we ll get to that later). In addition to a cage and bedding, it is also generally a good idea to provide containers for food (hay, scientific pellet mix, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Decision Making Skills in Business Environment Essay Decision making can be defined as a mental process of making choices among possible alternatives to make a practical decision (Reason, 1990; Wang, 2000). From selecting what items to buy in a supermarket to deciding which television channel to watch, we often have to make decisions in different conditions, particularly when we are facing uncertainties and trade offs. Admittedly, decision making skills have become increasing important when it comes to the highly competitive and ever changing business world. In view of that, a variety of models have been developed by the scholars from all around the world in an attempt to conceptualise the decision making process and maximise its potential output. In short, agreement between different stakeholders is the deciding factor of an ultimate decision in Carnegie Model. Although a consensus has been reached with the agreement of different stakeholders and parties, some critics pointed out that this will lead to a greater problem which they term it as satisficing . Satisficing means an organisation accepts a satisfactory rather than optimal approach to maximise the performance. In layman s term, it means the final decision made by the coalition is just satisfying the stakeholders sitting on the board but that solution may not be the best one to optimise the performance of an organisation. Secondly, managers are concerned with immediate problem and short run solutions or what Cyert and March (1963) termed as problemistic search . Problemistic search simply means the managers look around the environment to look around for a quick solution to solve the task as they don t expect a perfect solution when it is ill structured. To sum up the points, Daft (2010) opined that the managers normally look for a satisfactory solution that first emerges as they are constrained by several factors mentioned in the last paragraph. The Carnegie Model is particularly useful when it comes to problem identification stage. One recent example would be the United States government shutdown from October, 1st to 16th. These hormones are dumping into the bloodstream (Shier, Butler Lewis, 2009). The endocrine system does not have a single anatomic location. It is dispersed throughout the human body. The final purpose of this process is to control, regulate, and coordinate the functioning of the human body. Some body functions can be activated or inhibited by hormones, which are secreted in very small quantities. The hormone related diseases may be due to hyper secretion, or a hypo secretion. This hormone (parathyroid hormone) affects the bones, kidney, and intestine (Shier et al., 2009). Adrenal glands are endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys (Shier et al., 2009). The adrenal glands secrete hormones that increase heart rate, the force of cardiac muscle contraction, breathing rate, elevate blood pressure and blood glucose level. According to Shier, Butler Lewis (2009) other glands that produce hormones and thus are parts of the endocrine system include the pineal gland and the thymus gland . Shier et al., 2009 argued the pineal gland, located deep between the cerebral hemispheres, secretes hormone melatonin that acts on certain brain regions that function as a biological clock. • 12. Jorge Lima s Ted Talk Speech The circle of life has continued. Something has died, and now something new must take its place. In this case, that something is the ancient metaphor of the tree, but what is the something new? Manuel Lima believes that he has discovered a new metaphor that is on the horizon. In Lima s TED Talk speech A Visual History of Human Knowledge, Lima discusses the metaphor of the tree of knowledge and how it connects all things. Lima s primary concern is that this picture is outdated and offers a new alternative: the network. Lima is correct that the metaphor of the tree is outdated; however, the network is not a sufficient replacement. The metaphor is lacking in many areas ranging from showcasing accurate connections to fulfilling the basic purposes of a metaphor. Lima begins his speech by analyzing the ways humans have been organizing information throughout the centuries. He discusses the origins of the tree metaphor to describe the wealth of information that was being discovered at that time and how the metaphor essentially took the world by storm. He provided examples of the tree in instances ranging from family lineage to Darwin s Tree of Life ; however, Lima has come to the conclusion that the tree is outdated, and society is begging for a new, more accurate representation of knowledge and being. He states that nowadays we are really facing new complex, intricate challenges that cannot be understood by simply employing a simple tree diagram (Lima). With all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Exploring Theme In The Raven Exploring Theme in The Raven And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain thrilled me filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before... presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer... here I opened wide the door; darkness there and nothing more. These lines are from the notorious poem, The Raven written by the great author, Edgar Allan Poe. In this poem, The Raven , the author, Edgar Allan Poe, begins with the narrator of the poem, a young man mourning the loss of his love, Lenore. The narrator thinks that if he reads his books, it will end the suffering he is experiencing. Another example is in stanza 17, the poem reads, Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door! These metaphors convey that the raven has told the narrator something he does not want to believe and demands him to leave immediately. The raven tells the narrator he will never be able to hold Lenore again, not even in Heaven, which enrages the narrator. The use of Poe s figurative language has revealed his sadness and sorrow he has for Lenore. The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe has become well known over the years for its sad and mysterious plot. Ancient Mesopotamian Writing By 3000 B.C. in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq), and then soon after in Egypt, and by 1500 B.C. in China, people were scribbling, sketching and telling their world about their culture in a very permanent way. When ancient Mesopotamians started settling down onto farms surrounding the first cities, life became a bit more complicated. Agriculture required expertise and detailed recordkeeping, two elements that led directly to the invention of writing, historians say. Many of these still persist today in either the original or a mutated form. The Native American quality of living unsustainably persists today in various forms because it is difficult to notice an unsustainable lifestyle. John Steinbeck, Barry Lopez, and Scott Momaday in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, The American Geographies, and The Way to Rainy Mountain describe this effect. Today, it is easy to look back and see that Native Americans, including the Micmac, lived unsustainable lifestyles. The Micmac s economy revolved around trading small animals (e.g. beavers). Their desire for European goods provided an incentive to deplete the animal population (Merchant 13). A problem with this lifestyle is that it is difficult to know that the animal s population is being depleted until it is too late. The Native Americans of the Great Plains centered their economy on the buffalo. The Native Americans used difficult techniques (e.g. tricking them to fall off cliffs) to catch the buffalo, which was unsustainable considering how important the Buffalos were for them (Merchant 16). When the horse arrived the Native Americans became more efficient hunters. However, their lives became less sustainable because they became dependent on the horse and buffalo population. Long s speech was judged based on his practices as a Louisiana senator and governor, however it had the potential to be so much more had he lived to continue his legacy. People appeared to be afraid of how Governor Long operated within the legislative system of Louisiana because of the fact that, he tended to find his way around legal statutes that hindered his agenda. Some could argue that he stepped out of the bounds of power that reigns in a representative of a democratic nation, however he wound up being one of the most effective public servants in the country. Amidst the Great Depression, Governor Long gave Louisiana s economy a huge lift with the vast construction of bridges, schools, and roads. In fact the state of Louisiana has not had anything close to such an economic boost as to what Huey p. Long offered since that time. As time has passed, Louisiana has become infamous for its lack of proper public education, especially regarding grades one through twelve. This lack of proper education has become constantly associated with the state since Huey Long s assassination. Despite the controversy over how Long executed his political agenda, it cannot be refuted on how productive and beneficial his reign was for the state. This application serves as an early example of the power of crowdfunding 100 years before the advent of the Internet. Businesspeople and citizens rallied to a civic cause so a gift from the French government could find a home. Pulitzer used a single collection point to raise money from an enormous pool of donors and pledged amounts from pocket change upwards. However, whether or not they left their countries because of poverty, war, or civil or religious oppression, they believed that in America, they could achieve a better quality of life if they work hard enough. It was their reason and motivation to move. I, as an another immigrant who explored many countries and settled in the US, can understand how they feel about the Dream. However, in the last decades, American attitudes toward this idea has been reframed as the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. My Favorite Quote Analysis My favorite quote will always be by Sappho in which she says, Someone, I tell you, in another time will remember us. She was right. She s remembered for being a gay poet and is immortalized despite a lot of her works not being found completely. It s one of my favorite quotes because identifying as a nonbinary queer person who also likes girls, I can relate to Sappho a lot when she writes about her desire for love and personal heartbreaks. This quote also brings me ease as even in another time someone will still remember me. I think we all want to leave a legacy of some sort, and for me I want my legacy to be centered around my experience and accomplishments as an American born Punjabi artist and social activist, who was also highly active in the LGBTQ+ community. I want someone to remember me because it is a vicious cycle that people of color and members of the color in the LGBTQ+ community get forgotten in history. History is white washed. But the idea that I will do enough in my life to be remembered in some shape or form, reminds me that my efforts and failures as a Punjabi artist and social activist are just part of a legacy I am starting. Moving on, my strength and determination did not magically appear one day. I had a lot of amazing people who are a part of my support network who helped show me what healthy self love and growth is supposed to be. One of the people I will be highlighting is my AP English teacher. Candice Ligator, was one of the best, and one of my favorite teachers in my high school career. She was a big part of my support system when it came to being a trans and queer student who had a lot of family issues. She was also a big inspiration to me as she told us stories full of struggles growing as a teacher. She talked about how starting off as a teacher at first made her cry every night, showing me that it takes persistence to be adept in a profession. Her choices on the pieces of literature she taught were engaging as they touched upon feminism, gay rights, and race. This allowed me to explore both my interest in writing and in social justice. Reading about personal experiences from Mary Shelley, Oscar Wilde, and Ralph Ellison was inspiring as it allowed me to see that I can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Big Bang Theory Of Sarcasm 1. Chin s main point about sarcasm is that it is very useful and that it is an necesary tool to understanding each other, especially in our culture. Chin says, Sarcasm detection is an essential skill if one is going to function in a modern society dripping with irony. The people that can t detect sarcasm are socially inept, so to speak, because they will take what is said at face value, instead of understanding the nuances of what isn t being said. 2. Sarcasm is a neurological ability, not just a style of talking that some people use. It takes more brain power to percieve irony than regular conversation does. Like mental bodybuilding, it forces the brain to extend itself to understand what the truth is behind the sarcasm. The article states that, Sarcasm seems to exercise the brain more than sincere statements do. Scientists who have monitored the electrical activity of the brains of test ... Although his character is a genius, he has to work harder to understand some of the most basic interactions between the other characters. The ability to detect sarcasm is a natural occurence in most people from ages as young as four years old. People that are unable to detect sarcasm may be autistic, have had brain injuries or lesions, or be schizophrenic. Dementia can cause a person to lose the ability to detect sarcasm and may be one of the early signs of the disease. 4. In Greek, sarcasm means to tear flesh like dogs. Another way to say this would be that the mean, cutting remarks of sarcasm can hurt someone. An example would be when someone is being sarcastic, but the intention of the remark is to hurt or demean the person it is being said to. People that are trying to percieve themselves to be more popular than they are might be more prone to this, as a defense mechanism against what others might think about ... • 36. Jealousy And Discrimination In Shakespeare s Othello People discriminate for many different reasons: terror, jealousy, the desire for power, or a need to dissociate themselves from other people. They can, thus, use someone s skin color (a hereditary trait that cannot be altered) to express their hatred. In Shakespeare s play Othello, Othello, is a happily wedded man and despite his African heritage, is a well respected general in the Venetian army. At the beginning of the play, Othello has not experienced any type of discrimination, as of yet. However, by Iago pointing out to Othello the existence of racist concepts and persuading him on taking action against the individuals who are presumably harboring racist fueled indignations, Iago successfully causes the ruin Othello and his wife Desdemona. Race is an issue throughout the play because of Iago s hatred towards Othello. Also, Iago oftentimes uses racial insults against Othello.
