This document outlines a sheep brain dissection lab. It begins by comparing sheep and human brain structures like the olfactory bulb and cerebellum. Students will dissect a preserved sheep brain to identify structures like the cerebrum, cerebellum, ventricles, hippocampus, and cranial nerves. They will make mid-sagittal and coronal cuts, diagramming their findings. The goal is to study sheep brain anatomy and compare it to human functions.
Anatomical localisation of function is a fundamental principle in the neurosciences. This presentation highlights the basics neuroanatomy and correlate major brain structure with their functions.
The midbrain or mesencephalon extends from the pons to the diencephalon and is about 2.5 cm (1 in.)long.
The cerebral aqueduct passes through the midbrain, connecting the third ventricle above with the fourth ventricle below.
The anterior part of the midbrain contains paired bundles of
axons known as the cerebral peduncles.
The cerebral peduncles consist of axons of Corticospinal, Corticopontine, and Corticobulbar tracts, which conduct nerve impulses from motor areas in the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord, pons, and medulla, respectively.
The posterior part of the midbrain, called the tectum, contains four rounded elevations.
Two superior elevations: Superior Colliculi
Two inferior elevations: Inferior Colliculi
The superior colliculi serves as reflex centers for certain visual activities.
Visual activities like, eye movements for tracking moving images (such as a moving car) and scanning stationary images (as you are watching this slide).
The superior colliculi are also responsible for reflexes that govern movements of the head, eyes, and trunk in response to visual stimuli.
The inferior colliculi are part of the auditory pathway, relaying impulses from the receptors for hearing in the inner ear to the brain.
These two nuclei are also reflex centers for the startle reflex, sudden movements of the head, eyes, and trunk that occur when you are surprised by a loud noise such as a gunshot.
The midbrain contains several other nuclei, which includes the left and right substantia nigra.
Neurons that release dopamine, extending from the substantia nigra to the basal ganglia, help control subconscious muscle activities.
Loss of these neurons is associated with Parkinson disease.
Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder that leads to Shaking,
Stiffness, Difficulty with walking, Difficulty with balance, Difficulty with coordination.
Also present are the left and right red nuclei, which look reddish due to their rich blood supply and an iron-containing pigment in their neuronal cell bodies.
Axons from the cerebellum and cerebral cortex form synapses in the red nuclei, which help control some voluntary movements of the limbs.

Considerations when deciding about withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining...Dr. Liza Manalo, MSc.
Towards the end of life, physicians face dilemmas of discontinuing life-sustaining treatments or interventions. In some circumstances, these treatments are no longer of benefit, while in others the patient or family no longer want them. The physician plays an essential role in clarifying the goals of medical treatment, defining the care plan, initiating discussions about life-sustaining therapy, educating patients and families, helping them deliberate, making recommendations, and implementing the treatment plan. Communication is key. It should be clarified that when inevitable death is imminent, it is legitimate to refuse or limit forms of treatment that would only secure a precarious and burdensome prolongation of life, for as long as basic humane, compassionate care is not interrupted. Agreement to DNR status does not preclude supportive measures that keep patients free from pain and suffering as possible. Acceptable clinical practice on withdrawing or withholding treatment is based on an understanding of the medical, ethical, cultural, and religious issues. There is a need to individualize care option discussions to illness status, and patient and family preferences, beliefs, values, and cultures. The process of shared decision making between the patient, the family, and the clinicians should continue as goals evolve and change over time.

The brain stem is a critical part of the human brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord.
It plays a vital role in basic life functions and serves as a bridge between the higher brain centers (such as the cerebral cortex) and the rest of the body.
The brain stem is responsible for essential functions such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and basic reflexes.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

2. Goal:
We will compare sheep brain structures with human brain structures.
Compared to human cerebrum a human’s olfactory bulb is much shorter than
sheep olfactory bulbs compared to the sheep cerebrum. Human cerebellum is
bilobed, sheep cerebellum is not.
First, we will learn body positions applied to the whole sheep brain.
We will do two sections: one group will do a mid-sagittal cut, the other a
coronal cut.
Use the mid-sagittal section to find your location through each consecutive
coronal section.
3. Methods and Materials:
We will be dissecting a preserved adult sheep brain.
Our dissection kit contains a scalpel, a fine tipped pair of scissors, a blunt
metal probe, a fine tipped forceps, a blunt-tipped forceps.
It is vital to wear vinyl gloves. It is important to be careful when working with
preservatives. If necessary protect your eyes. Follow OSHA (office of safety
and Health administration) regulations.
Dispose of the dissected specimen as indicated on the MSDA (material safety
and data administration) sheets.

28. Summary:
We have studied the structures on a preserved sheep brain specimen. We
have learned the functions of such structures using the lecture handout and
comparing to what is known about the human brain function.
We learned body positions applied to the whole sheep brain.
The mid-sagittal cut was helpful in identifying the extension of the lateral
ventricle to the third ventricle. The coronal cuts made it possible to find the
cerebral aqueduct (aqueductus sylvii) that joins the third and fourth ventricles
which house the CSF.
The coronal cut helped in the location of the hippocampus along the roof of the
descending lateral ventricle.
