The Africa RISING Project in Ethiopia introduced climate-smart agricultural technologies to smallholder farmers vulnerable to climate change. Over 0.33 million households adopted improved crop varieties, livestock feed, land restoration, water management, and mechanization. Crop yields increased significantly, reaching up to 9.4 tons/hectare for wheat. Postharvest practices reduced feed waste by over 30%. The project built the capacity of over 23,000 farmers and empowered cooperatives to disseminate seeds and technologies. An economic impact assessment projected benefits from technology adoption from 2013 to 2025.

Diversifying pastures with trees and legumes can improve soil nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration while creating a microclimate suitable for cattle. Studies found that including legumes in pastures increased live weight gain in cattle by up to 3.4 times, and resulted in 33.8% lower methane emissions than grass alone. Improved silvopastoral systems show potential for supporting strategies to address climate challenges at regional and national levels.

Grasslands can sequester carbon through the buildup of plant biomass and incorporation into soil organic matter. The rate of carbon sequestration in grasslands varies considerably based on climate, soil type, grassland age, and management practices. On average, grasslands sequester 0.8 Mg of carbon per hectare per year. Fertilization and low-to-moderate grazing or mowing intensities can increase carbon sequestration, while high intensities and no fertilization can lead to carbon losses. Maintaining existing soil carbon stocks and adopting practices that store carbon are important for grasslands to mitigate climate change.
