This document provides a review of recent research on enhancing heat transfer through convection and magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection. It discusses two main techniques: using extra surfaces like inserts to disrupt thermal boundary layers, and applying magnetic fields in magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection systems. The review summarizes several studies on each technique, finding that extra surfaces generally enhance heat transfer by inducing turbulence, while magnetic fields can both enhance and suppress heat transfer depending on parameters. It concludes that both techniques show promise for improving thermal efficiency and optimizing heat exchanger design.

Enhancement of heat transfer in tube in-tube heat exchangers using twisted in...Ijrdt Journal
Heat exchangers have several industrial and engineering applications. There are different methods to enhance heat transfer in heat exchangers. Passive technique of heat transfer is the most economical and best suited one. The role of inserts in internal forced convection has been widely acknowledged as a passive device in the heat transfer enhancement. One of such technique is introduction of twisted inserts which enhances the heat transfer coefficient. Twisted aluminium inserts when placed in the path of the fluid flow, creates a high degree of turbulence resulting in an increase in the heat transfer rate. By placing inserts, it is expected that the benefits due to the increased heat transfer coefficient overcome the higher cost involved because of the increased frictional losses. The work mainly focuses on increasing the heat transfer of tube-in-tube heat exchangers by using twisted aluminium inserts. The results obtained from the tube with twisted aluminium insert are compared with those without twisted insert using standard properties of heat transfer (LMTD & Effectiveness). The relations based on the data gathered during this work for predicting the heat transfer coefficient of the horizontal pipe with twisted taped insert are proposed. According to the results, in order to obtain maximum heat transfer, the twist ratio must be at the lowest level.

In this paper, the three dimensional CFD modeling studies on heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance
of concentric tube heat exchanger using twisted tapes (Plain, V-cut, , Jagged V-cut) with different twist ratios (y=2.0, 4.0) are
used. Twisted tapes are used to augment the heat transfer by creating turbulence in the fluid flow. Various methods are applied
to increase thermal performance of heat transfer devices such as treated surfaces, rough surfaces, swirling flow devices, coiled
tubes, and surface tension devices. Out of these twisted tape method is used to increase the thermal performance. Twisted tape
inserts on effectiveness of heat exchanger has analyzed for different Reynolds Number. The maximum thermal performance
factor was obtained by the Jagged V-cut twisted tape (H=50) insert compare to other twisted tapes. Simultaneously the friction
factor has been analyzed

The present work reported the use of variant twisted tapes fitted in a double pipe heat exchanger to improve the fluid mixing that leads to higher heat transfer rate with respect to that of the plain-twisted tape. Heat transfer, flow friction and thermal enhancement factor characteristics in a double pipe heat exchanger fitted with plain and variant twisted tapes using water as working fluid are investigated experimentally. Tests are performed for laminar flow ranges. The experimental data for a plain tube and plain-twisted tapes are validated using the standard correlations available in the literature. Two different variant twisted tapes which include V cut-twisted tape and Horizontal wing cut-twisted tape with twist ratios of y = 2.0, 4.4 and 6.0 are used. In addition, the variation of heat transfer coefficient of copper–nanofluids with different of Reynold's number and volume concentration of nanoparticles in plain tube without twisted tape.
Comparative studies on heat transfer and fluid flow in cored brick and pebble...eSAT Journals
Abstract
The article reports on comparison of transient heat transfer and fluid flow in two different sensible heat storage devices using Computational Fluid Dynamics. The candidate heat storage devices considered were cored brick and pebble bed and air was taken to be the working fluid. Same geometrical, material, porosity and boundary conditions, have been used for both the cored brick and pebble bed heaters, to compare the axial temperature history and pressure drop. The heat storage system comprises alumina, either in form of pebbles of diameter 6.5 mm, packed to a length of 0.455m in a 43mm diameter pipe, or cored brick of 43mm diameter and same length with through holes to have the same porosity (0.48) as that of the former. The conditions at inlet, outlet and lateral surface too have been taken to be same for both the systems. The fluid flow was considered to be incompressible with k-epsilon model to predict turbulence, and the thermo-physical properties of fluid and solid were assumed to remain constant. Simulations carried out for an inlet temperature of 465 K for velocities ranging from 2m/s to 5 m/s revealed that pressure drop in pebble bed to be considerably higher than those in cored brick, while the temperature history exhibited mixed trends.

CFD Analysis for Heat Transfer Enhancement of a Corrugated Plate Heat Exchang...ijtsrd
The flow properties of heat transfer across such corrugated channels are very distinct from parallel plate channels. The primary flow direction is parallel to the waviness of the channel of the corrugated channel, although the local flow direction is still changed due to the waviness of the channel. By flow recirculation, separation and re attachment, the thermal boundary layer formed on its walls is regularly disrupted and the convective heat transfer coefficient is thus increased. In this work, in corrugated channels, the convective heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of flow have been tested numerically. On channels of uniform heat flux and fixed corrugation over a Reynolds number spectrum, 10000 = Re = 30000, numerical research was conducted. The impacts of channel configuration, variation in Reynold’s number, and concentration variations of nanoparticles in base fluid on heat transfer are discussed. As opposed to the traditional corrugated channel, a major heat transfer gain was associated with the proposed corrugated channel. Based on the nanofluid concentration, Reynold number and channel configuration of the corrugated channel, the average Nusselt number increased by a factor of 2.2 up to 2.8 compared to that of the semi circular corrugated channel. Compared with the effect of channel configuration variation, triangular corrugated channel was the best Nusselt numbers, followed by the shape Semi circular Triangular , and Semi circular corrugated channel with the lowest results. Enhancing heat transfer surface are used in many
engineering applications such as heat exchanger, air conditioning,
chemical reactor and refrigeration systems, hence many
techniques have been investigated on enhancement of heat
transfer rate and decrease the size and cost of the involving
equipment especially in heat exchangers. One of the most
important techniques used are passive heat transfer technique.
These tchniques when adopted in Heat exchanger proved that the
overall thermal performance improved significantly. This paper
reviews experimental and numerical works taken by researchers
on this technique since 2004 such as twisted tape, wire coil, swirl
flow generator, etc. to enhance the thermal efficiency in heat
exchangers and useful to designers implementing passive
augmentation techniques in heat exchange. The authors found
that variously developed twisted tape inserts are popular
researched and used to strengthen the heat transfer efficiency for
heat exchangers. The other techniques used for specific work
environments are studied in this paper. Twisted tape inserts
perform better in laminar flow than turbulent flow. However, the
other several passive techniques such as ribs, conical nozzle, and
conical ring, etc. are generally more efficient in the turbulent flow
than in the laminar flow.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
